Reviews for Grand Hotel
Review 1:The mold all over the bathroom ceiling. Room door was left open all day after cleaning. The fridge was in the cupboard which we could not really open because the room was very small.
Review 2:The balcony. Big and comfy furniture.
Review 3:The hotel was in a great location and the staff were very helpful and pleasant. We had to stay 2 extra nights due to the floods and they looked after us well.
Review 4:Free wi fi was very slow and unpredictable in bedroom but ok in public areas. Breakfast wasn't great!
Review 5:Staff were friendly and helpful. Location was 5 minute walk to bus station. Bathroom was great, with a huge shower, and room had tea, coffee etc.
Review 6:All parking around the area was metered, 4 hours.... Hotel could get some permits for guests as we had to park quite a way away from the hotel. The weeknights were lovely and quiet except for Friday night, which was very very noisy when patrons left the hotel until quite late.
Review 7:Lovely room, new carpet and facilities, lovely old hotel feeling, quiet, close to beach. Good coffee and food. Hotel staff lovely.
Review 8:A little noise from the other rooms and a "pub" smell as you enter the hotel.
Review 9:We visited over the new year break so the pub was closed which was great for us with our 18 mth old. Very close to shops, restaurants and beach which was extremely handy.
Review 10:Our room was very very small so was the bathroom. While showering youflooded the whole room. There was plenty of mould on bathroom ceilingand during the night we couldn't sleep as there was a dropping acoutside. The most disappointing thing so ever was that the hotel chargedme the room weeks in advance though I booked the free cancellation andpay when you stay option. All in all I would definitely not recommendthis hotel to anyone!!!
Review 11:Run out of toilet paper When we flushed WC, refill was very noisy Dripping shower head.
Review 12:Room 6 Good size, comfy bed. Clean tidy with a great size balcony. Close to the beach. Friendly staff.
Review 13:...nothing much we didn't like, just the noise of people in the neighbouring room in flagrante delicto! before 6am after our late night out!! We had a no verandah room so no view.
Review 14:The proximity to the CBD, beach and Police Station! Staff were great, the room was fine, although our friends had larger ones which were even better, (a little more expensive of course).
Review 15:This is an appalling 'hotel'. The room (#2)was dirty, there was mold in the bathroom, damp in ceiling and bedrooms, windows were so dirty they could barely be seen out of, paint was cracked and peeling off of walls, wood was cracked and dented. Window ledges and sills were filthy. I would say staying here was a health-hazard and would steer clear.
Review 16:The only positive is the proximity to the Coast, however be warned this is opposite a busy Court and Police Station.
Review 17:Situated in a 100-year old building, no regular reception in the hotel, it is a bit noisy in the night because of the bar on the ground flour, there were cockroaches in my room
Review 18:Spacious room with a balcon, located 5 minutes walk from beach, cheapest offer in the region
Review 19:Not applickable
Review 20:The hotel and the bar and restaurant staff are all lovley , excellent in fact . The hotel was also with in walking distance to our gathering, that was fantastic , no need. For a designated driver so every one enjoyed the weekend. Thankyou.
Review 21:The bed was a little bit uncomfortable
Review 22:The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was nice and quiet. Good food in the restaurant . Close to the beaches.
Review 23:Absolutely loved staying here. Beautiful maintained & decorated old pub hotel with a serene atmosphere. Loved the staircase& motifs. Huge room with everything we needed& wonderful private balcony. Staff were very professional & friendly. I'll be back to stay anytime I'm in Newcastle!
Review 24:Your dining cannot be added to your room account. Very stupid when going to dinner you cannot by a drink from the bar an ad to your account. All tills seem to operate independantly including EFTPOS which all have $10 min eftpos - put the customer first
Review 25:excellent rooms
Review 26:Great location close to Newcastle & Nobby's beaches, plus Hunter St and the foreshore. Great cafes nearby including Good Brother. Staff friendly! We had the small double which was big enough as a sleeping spot though wouldn't want to live there ;-)
Review 27:Arrived to a room full of flies. Spoke with them and they were going to move us to another room and up charge us. They alternatively offered to spray the room with roach spray and leave the can un the room for us if we needed it again. Stairs only. Street parking which must be paid for.
Review 28:Restaurant and bar were busy. Food ok
Review 29:It's not so much as a didn't like than a confusion. The hotel isn't open on a Sunday so check in was a little confusing.
Review 30:Perfect location, very clean rooms exactly what we needed
Review 31:We were told we had a secured parking spot available however were directed to street parking once we arrived. Was also disappointed we had no view, the windows that we did have were frosted.
Review 32:We stripped the bed and pillows to save the staff, and we found the pillows had no protectors and they and the top bed linen, were stained.. The staircase to the rooms was very high, and as there was no lift so it was very difficult for hubby and I, over 60 and with bad knees, to get our luggage up and down (it was a hotel, so staff were otherwise engaged),..therefore, I think the $150 p.n price tag (although through Bookings.com ours was cheaper) is overpriced. They didn't have accomodation-specific staff so we felt isolated once the hotel closed at 11pm and again when we left at 7am..
Review 33:The lady who we saw about the room was helpful but busy. The mattress and pillows were the best we have slept on. The room was tiny, but had a balcony if needed. I couldn't stay there for a week, (I am claustrophobic), but it was comfortable. The room itself was isolated from the downstairs area, so no noises from the hotel were heard at all. On -street parking was safe under lights and being opposite the Newcastle Police station, felt safe. We could see the road from the balcony.
Review 34:The bathroom was very clean but did smell a bit fusty !!
Review 35:Very friendly staff, ideal location close to both the beach and the harbour. Room lovely and clean, comfortable bed and the linen and towels were changed on our second day. Plenty of coffee, tea etc., glasses cooling in the fridge was a nice idea. Had a lovely evening meal in the restaurant.
Review 36:I love the location of this beautiful old pub. The food is fabulous and the private space on the verandah's are a huge bonus. it is a quiet area of Newcastle, very close to the beaches and city centre. love The Grand :)
Review 37:My coffee cup had lipstick marks but that is the only negative
Review 38:Great spot close to beach and Harbourside . Clean renovated bathroom , AC and comfy bed
Review 39:I was cold! It rained all night and I had to use the spare towels in the room to layer up over the sheets to keep warm. Lucky there was an oversupply of spare towels! Both the supplied cups were dirty - had probably been thru a dishwasher but had build up of crud. Beautiful heritage pub but the rooms are a bit generic, fittings and furniture felt chipped and sad and dated.
Review 40:Staff were very helpful making arrangements for my late check in.
Review 41:This was a mismatch between the Booking.com and website in terms of the possibility of having 3 people in the room. The booking sheet allowed me to book for 3 and send a message regarding this but the hotel had not set up for 3. I was travelling with my 82 year old mother and she had to sleep on a mattress on the floor. The staff did very little to accommodate the problem apart from putting a mattress on the floor. We had to make up the bed. They did charge us for the extra person however!
Review 42:nice generous room with balcony. very clean
Review 43:Fridge in the room didn't work & there milk & yogurt was not usable for breakfast
Review 44:Room & facilities great & extra close to work commitment
Review 45:All excellent (though no daytime long-term parking). And very good food at very reasonable price. Very friendly and efficient staff. Beautifully renovated old hotel.
Review 46:No Lift, Checkout at 10.00, no Parking
Review 47:Quiet spacious room with balcony in an ancient but well restored, typical Pub Establishment. Good food in the still excisting Pub on groundfloor - but not noisy! Short distance to city
Review 48:THE BATHROOM WAS A BIT DATED
Review 49:THE ROOM AND VERANDAH WERE BOTH SPACIOUS AND IT WAS A SHORT WALK TO THE CENTRE OF THE CITY, SHOPS ETC. NICE RESTAURANT DOWNSTAIRS & YOU CAN HAVE A PRE-DINNER DRINK IN THE PUB BAR.
Review 50:was not told about the possiblity of breakfast and would have been nice.
Review 51:The clean room and location was fantastic and central to where we were needed.
Review 52:Room was good but just a few things could have been added to make it alittle more comfortable and warmer ...ie surface in bathroom to puttoiletries, bathroom heater, even a plant just to make the room feel alittle more lived in.
Review 53:Shower was the best.... Staff were very very friendly and gave us reallygood service (manager? Who was there on all our breakfasts wasbrilliant. Hotel had a great feel to it. We will most def be back!
Review 54:Breakfast didn't start until 7.30am which is too late for early meetings or when you have to catch an early flight. My room had a street facing balcony and in the morning I was woken up by early morning trucks/traffic and bird singing! I am a light sleeper so others might find it ok but I would definitely ask for a room away from the road if I stay again in this hotel. I stayed during days that the Hotel didn't have bands on so I am not sure how quiet the rooms would be when the bands are on.
Review 55:Very friendly staff and convenient location.
Review 56:Thought it a little over priced but would I stay there again, yes.
Review 57:The staff were excellent. I loved the room with the balcony overlooking Church Street. Very clean and warm.
Review 58:Not a thing. A great feel of homely comfort.
Review 59:Unique accommodation in this day and age. Room size and facilities, excellent. Outlook from the balcony, interesting. Must have been a REAL grand hotel back in the day.
Review 60:We loved our stay at The Grand Hotel. The room we stayed in (room 7) was large and filled with character. The room was clean, and check in was easy. The location was excellent for our quick getaway for the weekend. We would definitely recommend this hotel and will stay here in the future.
Review 61:My partner and I stayed on a Sunday night, so the bar was actually closed. The pub is within walking distance to most of what Newcastle has to offer. Our room (number 7) was large, airy and comfortable. There is an ensuite bathroom with a bath. The private balcony is large and has a nice table and chairs for two. I've eaten at the Grand many times and the food is reliably good to excellent. No dinners on Sunday however.
Review 62:No fault of hotel, there is no off road parking hence had to use parking meter but $5 per day is no worries
Review 63:The staff were so polite, friendly and welcoming. Room was perfectly clean. Hotel in a great locatio
Review 64:We could hear everything happening next door, through the interconnecting door. We stayed 2 nights and the 2nd night a lady coughed all night. Due to the poor sound insulationn it seemed like she was in our room.
Review 65:The location is excellent and the property is well maintained. We stayed at room #7 which is really spacious with a beautiful large veranda.
Review 66:The room was not very clean and was really small. There were small windows to the outside with frosted glass only so was very dark and dingy. Luckily we were out most of the time so it didn't matter too much to us. There was also no free parking between 9am and 5pm, $4 per hour our the front.
Review 67:The location was good and the staff were friendly.
Review 68:Friendly staff, comfortable room and 100% free wifi (with strong signal!) and large private balcony in quiet part of town, but only short walk to beach (5 mins) or shops (10-15). Would recommend.
Review 69:Door leading onto patio has large glass pannel above door and allows a lot of light into room at night. I like it dark for sleeping.
Review 70:Great location, clean, comfortable, large rooms and outside area.
Review 71:The food in the pub was extremely disappointing. Forced to eat out next night. Steak was terrible.
Review 72:Location, room, friendly staff. Close to everything.
Review 73:Having to carry my bag up 3 flights of stairs. On Sunday the bathroom not being cleaned properly. No tissues .The fact forr dinner they made me go in the bar as I was by myself & they needed the larger tables. They need to have more 2 & 4 seating tables.
Review 74:The gentleman who let me in my room when I locked myself out.Giving me a free cup of coffee because the breakfast took a long time coming.
Review 75:Walls are paper thin, can hear every sound especially people staying above you. Could hear people next door fighting.
Review 76:Great room, comfortable bed, nice shower head, awesome location. Friendly staff.
Review 77:Beds and pillows were comfortable, giving a great nights sleep. Refurbished room (smallish) with ensuite, plenty of towels. Not in the main part of the CBD so no late night party goers. Looked like good food, well patronised and well dressed crowd.
Review 78:Bottom of the shower leaked onto the bathroom floor - a minor matter.
Review 79:Room was excellent. We used the balcony a lot. The whole experience was relaxing and very comfortable
Review 80:When we arrived we found out that the restaurant and bar were closed for the 4 days we were staying. We should have been advised of this before, as we would not have stayed here knowing this. Very disappointed at the lack of information. Bedroom on noisy street (traffic)
Review 81:location. beautiful grand old building
Review 82:Breakfast items not available three days in a row then (without warning) no breakfast at all on weekends. Room had musty smell, in urgent need of new carpet and a good repaint.
Review 83:Quiet location, huge room had magnificent balcony. Good coffee in breakfast room. All staff friendly and helpful.
Review 84:Confirmed we wished to have breakfast which was agreed by staff on arrival.....we were not told that the hotel does not serve breakfast on Saturday and Sunday. We did not see any staff from the time of arrival...no one was available at check out.
Review 85:Room 2 needed several repairs. The bathroom door did not shut or lock. The window sashes were broken and could not be opened. Bad outlook.
Review 86:Good walking location for water front, beaches and Scratchleys Fort.
Review 87:Couldn't connect to the wifi No help available,View promised but was not except a brick wall, Nothing available for eating, no room too cramped
Review 88:The bed was excellent
Review 89:Very clean and comfy. We were a bit hesitant about staying at a hotel ( noise etc) but were pleasantly surprised. Great spot, walking distance to everything.
Review 90:One flight of stairs. (minor) comfy double bed only, offered queen upgrade but no balcony
Review 91:Small boutique hotel, ten rooms, seperate bathroom and shower, air conditioner, balcony, (room 9) relaxed environment mid week, friendly staff, would return!!
Review 92:The cleanliness of the rooms, the food at the bistro and the friendly, helpful staff who made a stressful time a bit more comfortable for us. Couldn't fault the staff at all. Will definitely stay again.
Review 93:Parking, although parking station over road if you didn`t want to leave your car in the street
Review 94:Location was excellent, room was excellent, Bistro was great
Review 95:Having to come in straight away to pay upfront. Not everyone has a creditcard. The stairs would deter older people.
Review 96:We liked the balcony. The bathroom was nice and the bed was great. Loved the option of ceiling fan or a/c. The only problem was the booking. Book now pay later was a lie. If I hadn't rang and organised to come in an pay a month early we wouldn't have a booking at all and without a credit card you're screwed.
Review 97:The large, interesting room, helpful staff, cleanliness. Great to sit out on the balcony for a diy breakfast and watch the world start up. The manager was most helpful.
Review 98:Perfect location close but not too close to shops & waterfront. Great room with our own private balcony! Older style Hotel with a great renovation.
Review 99:my room was a little small signage for entry/check-in not clear on arrival
Review 100:Location in-house restaurant daily room refresh balcony quiet bar downstairs period atmosphere
Review 101:- location is very central to beach and centre of town - huge room - great value for money - the hotel is an iconic old building so great to step back in time, with all the modern facilities - restaurant was excellent- Barramundi cooked in salt crust was supurb
Review 102:No on site parking however being a historic hotel you can't expect it . Parking station close by as well as on street parking outside after hours
Review 103:Old traditional hotel that has been modernised . Huge balcony and excellent sized room close to beach and harbour
Review 104:Number one in the list of unfavourite hotels I experienced in my life. Unfriendly sraff, very dirty room with a lot of insects, no air conditioning, poor WiFi connectivity, acient sanitary equipment.
Review 105:No advantages
Review 106:Nothing bad to say..we had an excellent stay
Review 107:The hotel has a lot of character and the rooms have been renovated very nicely. The Position is excellent close to the beach and town center.the hotel has a lovely restaurant and bar downstairs. I would definitely stay there again
Review 108:Squeaky bed frame making the bed uncomfortable. Room size is small and there was no wardrobe or drawers to place clothes.no staff on jan. 1 reception was closed and we were not informed about closure when we made the booking.
Review 109:Location is not bad few mins. walk to the beach. Friendly staff and nice huge balcony.
Review 110:The location, the size, the ease of access to the beach, the harbour, hunter street bars, restaurants and boutique shopping. The balcony for sitting, the onsite restaurant for good affordable dining.
Review 111:Bed was noisy and would have liked to be able to open one window
Review 112:Loved the way they have managed to update whilst keeping the feeling of being in a pub.
Review 113:Lack of onsite parking requires on street parking metered till 5pm or use of a parking station nearby.
Review 114:Beautiful old building with excellent upgraded modern room.
Review 115:Beautiful Old Hotel centrally located at half the price of the big chains. Bathrooms are ready for an upgrade but the rooms themselves are very spacious and spotlessly clean and comfortable. Would not hesitate to stay again.
Review 116:The balcony rooms look nice, but we had the cheap room which had very little space and no view from the windows. Wireless had a really weak signal in our room.
Review 117:Excellent location minutes from the beach and shopping. Both breakfast and dinner were very tasty. Rooms were modern and quiet.
Review 118:Bed is really soft, which I don't like. Could do with a towel rail in the bathroom and more coat hangers.
Review 119:Awesome balcony, clean, they let us do laundry there.
Review 120:What I don't like is parking area, I had to pay parking ticket most of the time.
Review 121:I really like the best was walking distance from the Hotel to the train station, I had my daughter and my granddaughter from Sydney It was handy. The restaurant and the bar just down stairs...not bad.
Review 122:Due to my last minute need to extend my stay for an extra week, there were no rooms available due to hotels popularity. Not hotels fault, but mine.
Review 123:Good location, staff very helpful, dining experience caters for all needs and quiet night sleep.
Review 124:Needs more accessible power points near bedside tables
Review 125:Huge balcony; Close to beach, bus terminal and CBD; Great value-for-money; Renovated bathroom; Free Wi-Fi
Review 126:Great friendly staff, helpful and personable, couldn't do enough for you. Awesome food and loads of space and storage
Review 127:Parking. The close parking was 2 hour paid parking between 9&5
Review 128:Good value for money. Very helpful staff
Review 129:Beautifully refurbished rooms. Very friendly staff.
