Reviews for Brydone Hotel Oamaru

Review 1:No facility to sit in room - spacious bathroom but no seating other than bed and minimal space around bed. Room had hotel internal traffic noise during evening to 11pm. Workman on roof immediately outside window from 0730 to checkout 0930 - noisy. Due to room allocation stairs had to be traveled with luggage, lift only partial to allocated room - not all rooms the same. No view room 16 other than hotel roof.

Review 2:Location and greeting on arrival fantastic

Review 3:Just one wee thing. Very difficult to fill kettle up with water in bathroom sink. Rm 20. Light not working on left hand side of bed.

Review 4:Very friendly and approachable reception staff.

Review 5:A bit more attention to detail in the rooms, like checking to see that curtains are attached to their rail. A little thing but important to me. The bathroom was very clean a up to date.

Review 6:Great location, so close to everything. The staff at reception were exceptional, smiley and patient and went out of their way to help. God bless them as the general public can be painful.

Review 7:we can tell that the person who stayed in our room before had a bad stomach because the toilet has not been thoroughly cleaned what was very disgusting. the fridge in the middle of the room was so noisy that we had to turn it off.

Review 8:it was really cheap

Review 9:Signage from car park entrance not easy to find way to reception. Building seemed to create a "wind tunnel" and very noisy when wind blowing

Review 10:Stayed in suite. Great view of ocean Comfortable bed. Bathroom facilities excellent

Review 11:The lifts were old & small. The parking at the rear was good however the layout of the hotel was a bit confusing. The free wi fi was a bit of a faff and kept going down.

Review 12:Very central location.

Review 13:The staff member that took my phone call, all I was asking was if I could use their bathroom to change for my friends wedding, and she was very very rude.

Review 14:It is central to everything. The staff were amazing at getting our room cleaned super fast for early check in. Even though it was never expected:-D. Amazing

Review 15:Good location, very close to Victorian Oamaru and Steam punk. Attached restaurant was closed, but staff rang our room enquiring whether we needed dinner or drinks. Appreciated the staff contacting us to enquire.

Review 16:Friendly staff. Great central location. Walking distance to everything. Great atmosphere. Even though the Hotel's glory days are obviously past, it still provides great service and comfort.

Review 17:The roast of the day was cold. There was plenty of it but it was cold and the meat was lacking in flavour

Review 18:It is central to the places we visited and we could walk a lot instead of taking the car.

Review 19:The staff were warm and friendly and very helpful. For an old building you don't expect state of the art facilities, but our room was warm, clean and had everything you need for a pleasant stay. The restaurant staff were very accommodating, and seemed genuinely interested in providing a top quality service. Location was excellent, right across from supermarket. I would definitely recommend.

Review 20:Wifi is chargeable.

Review 21:Historic building and the location of the hotel is convenient to town centre. Room is clean, spacious and free parking within hotel.

Review 22:We had a front room which was a bit noisy during the night owing to a Bar Across the street. not the Hotels fault, just young people having a good time on the long weekend.

Review 23:Beautiful old building.

Review 24:Disappointed the lift was not working to get our bags up & down -but no big deal. could have asked for help.

Review 25:Loved our large room -enough room for suitcases. comfy chairs to watch t.v.with little table for drinks-luxury, fabulous spa bath & bathroom-luxury! Bed & linen were are terrific. Lovely Views out big windows. Dinner at the bar was great!

Review 26:Hotel virtually empty and they had to put someone in room straight through from our headboard - they went to bed after us and took a long time showering etc then talked ++. Receptionist offered a bed configuration different to what we had ordered through Booking.com. We said we would stay with the king size bed as long as it wasn't two singles pushed together. assured it wasn't BUT of course it was!! Very off-hand response when I mentioned all this at Reception next morning (same girl on).

Review 27:Bed was comfortable

Review 28:Would have preferred if it was made clear that the free car parking was in no way secured & infact is located at the back of a sports bar. The room itself was satisfactory, however the common areas of the hotel appear shabby & rabbit warren-esque

Review 29:Staff were very pleasant. Thought it was an excellent small touch that housekeeping chilled the wine glasses. Free car parking is always a bonus

Review 30:room clean but very tired looking, definitely needs a refurbishment. it was a saturday night, very noisy from pub down the street including people climbing the fire escape and running along it!

Review 31:handy location

Review 32:One electric blanket didn't work. No plug for bathroom basin. Dripping tap in bathroom. No toilet brush.

Review 33:Room very clean and comfortable and well supplied with toiletry and tea/coffee items.

Review 34:Finding the room from the carpark was abit of a mission.

Review 35:Loved the room - large and had a lovely big bed. Having restaurant and bar downstairs was great.

Review 36:Terrible sound-proofing between rooms. People next door kept me awake until they finally went to sleep at 1/30 am. Not very clean - was old ice-cream in freezer part of fridge, and bathroom floor needed a proper cleaning agent over it.

Review 37:Location good. Bed good. Didn't use café, but looked a nice place to sit.

Review 38:Fire doors in hallway were open and the place was freezing...our bedroom had no heating on and was also freezing...poor when they knew we were coming.

Review 39:Value for money

Review 40:The room we booked wasn't the room we got. Not happy at all and the pictures are nothing like the place.

Review 41:They give us a refund since we didn't get the room we booked

Review 42:Reception staff on arrival very businesslike and not friendly. The room is very tired decor wise. The bathroom was tiny and basic. But worse, there was a lot if noise at various times in the night from other people both outside our room ( outside) and in the hotel from other guests in the corridor. This occurred after midnight so not early!

Review 43:Location good and central. Warm indoors.

Review 44:We must have had a room close to the band playing because we could hear it quite clearly. Stopped about 11pm so not too bad

Review 45:Nice staff. Lovely warm hotel.

Review 46:Could do with some teaspoons for the tea making facilities.

Review 47:The bed was very comfortable, supportive but not hard. Rooms were very clean and tidy, looked fresh and well looked after. Loved the friendly staff, the cleaners as well as the front of house.

Review 48:Shabbiness of rooms and lack of outlook.

Review 49:This hotel is perfectly situated in the centre of Oamaru, within walking distance of all places of interest, with good parking.

Review 50:wine glasses had been missed by cleaner- got others and a discount when I asked :-)

Review 51:Era, or pulic areas - lovely-looked freshly decorated. rooms modern - bathroom awesom! Staff helpful and trusting. Allowed us to lock m/cycle in shed after late arrival..didn't fuss over key just rang and collected it next morn when they needed to get into shed.

Review 52:Light in car park outside shone into the room, either cap lights so they dont shine upwards or pelmet the curtains

Review 53:Old world charm with modern conforts.

Review 54:1. No Wi fi - too far from room, lights don't work, refrigerator rattled, 0ne power socket for fridge, lamp, TV,jug. 2, bath sink - large spider crack 3. sky TV - only 8 channels 4. old remodel, old paint and wood trim

Review 55:Receptionist was wonderful.

Review 56:not a bad experience but the taxi ordered by receptionist ran 15 mins late - worrying when you're heading to a wedding. all fine though as brides always run late themselves :)

Review 57:the brydone is well central which is very convenient. nice & quiet the rooms over the back car park.

Review 58:The cover on our bed needed attending to as it looked like it had body fluid in places and needed a god wash. The sheets etc were fresh and clean but the appearance of the cover was off putting.

Review 59:The staff were really great and so helpful

Review 60:Rather a round-about method to park your car and reach your room, but because of the extension of the building hard to overcome. It annoys me when light bulbs have not been checked.

Review 61:Although a mature building it has been maintained well. Room very spacious and liked their 'green' idea to help the penguins.

Review 62:There was hair left on the bathroom floor and the head board was stained. Old fixtures and in desperate need of a re model.

Review 63:The location was great. Close to everything and easy to find. Price was good although maybe a little high for the standard of the room.

Review 64:We missed seeing the blue penguin colony.

Review 65:Lovely Victorian buildings, very good meal and wines in the Victorian Criterion Hotel (vg vfm), hotel was very good vfm. Young lady at reception went out of her way to help us - always appreciated when one is doing long drives around NZ.

Review 66:We didn't have a bad experience here.

Review 67:The Brydone Hotel is perfectly based in Oamaru to explore the Victorian area and is only a 20 minute walk from the blue penguins. The staff were very pleasant, the hotel was clean and tidy and we had a good night's sleep.

Review 68:We had a beautiful room for our one night reservation. We decided to walk to a restaurant and when we got to the lobby it was raining and my husband started to head for our room for an umbrella, but the front desk staff quickly handed us two umbrellas to borrow instead. Parking was convenient and our stay was excellent.

Review 69:Nothing - loved it.

Review 70:The historic feeling and features of the hotel are lovely, but it's all very clean and modern inside, as you would want it to be. The rooms are gorgeous. Bed is super comfy. Extremely quiet. Blackout curtains. Fabulous en suite bathroom. Staff very nice. Very convenient for town. Half an hour's walk to penguins.

Review 71:It was a bit noisy - I think our room was possibly above the kitchen and we we woken by voices quite early.

Review 72:Lovely big room with very tasteful decor. The bathroom was super with a big spa bath. The hotel is I a good location for the historic Victorian area.

Review 73:Room outlook into sheds Rooms not very soundproof

Review 74:The old historical building Friendly reception Helpful staff Good size rooms Great restaurant Central location

Review 75:Poor ventilation in the bathroom. No airflow in the room. One small window. No Air Conditioning. The room was hot and airless! Disappointing for an otherwise lovely old hotel.

Review 76:Staff, general facilities, centre of Oamaru so good access to some great shopping and the Victorian Precinct.

Review 77:Hotel is tired and in need of refurbishment. Breakfast is extra. Cleaners noisy!!

Review 78:Location was great. Walking distance to bars & restaurants and 20 mins from penguin viewing. Free parking

Review 79:Paying for wifi - but there are cafes with free wifi in the vicinity, and the public library also has free wifi, so we need not have paid!

Review 80:The old style nature of the hotel, the fact that we had a separate bedroom & sitting room and a generous-sized bathroom, all for a very reasonable rate. The room was quiet, and staff were friendly. Walking distance to the old buildings of the port area.

Review 81:room was very 'ordinary' and did not match the image seen on the website. for an historic hotel i felt there could have been more effort to match the room with the image of the sweeping staircase, high ceilinged hallways and victorian theme of the town.

Review 82:bathroom was excellent (except for the towel rail which fell off the wall)

Review 83:Our room looked like it could use a bit of a spruce up, but was clean and comfortable.

Review 84:The 'old' style of the place, and its location near the Victorian heritage precinct. The staff were friendly and generally helpful. We very much enjoyed our stay.

Review 85:A big walk with suitcases from carpark to room.

Review 86:I liked all the beautiful surroundings, the breakfast we had and the comfort of the facilities Nice friendly staff also.

Review 87:Hotel was quite old, it was kept very clean but certainly felt dated. The bed unfortunately certainly felt worn out, but other than that the room was fine.

Review 88:The location was good, walking distance to everything you needed. Plenty of parking available. Shower was good, great pressure and warmth.

Review 89:Rooms in newer wing of hotel are small, noisy and a bit shabby; bathroom is very small and awkward -eg shower over bath unsuitable for people with mobility / balance issues. Trek to get from newer wing to the front of the hotel.

Review 90:Central location; old part of hotel very attractive; friendly staff; free off street parking

Review 91:Breakfast which was included in our accommodation price, was of a verypoor standard. Firstly we had to find someone to take our order and whenit did arrive it was very greasy. Requested Fried Eggs were discoloredclearly done on a Dirty Hot Plate. Bacon was under done and ScrambledEggs were to runny. Finally the Coffee was in a Thermal jug and was onlyluke warm.

Review 92:See all of the above: But we loved the old lady (Brydone)

Review 93:Quite aged room, ripped curtains and facilities not in top condition. The heater was very effective but only went at one temperature.

Review 94:Good location. Friendly staff. Interesting historical building.

Review 95:When we booked we read that Brydone Hotel had been updated. It was VERY tired, wall paper ripped, varnish chipped and tired. The fridge 'chugged' all night long - no sorry but wouldn't recommend it to friends - wouldn't stay again.

Review 96:The Restaurant staff were very helpful and our meal quite delicious.

Review 97:The room was actually clean but smelt strongly of body odour. Opening the window or providing an air freshener would have helped first impressions. The whole place has a generally tired feel about it. In the corridors particularly, the ambiance, smell and decor is reminiscent of 1970s retirement home.

Review 98:The location in the town is great, most things are in easy walking distance and the staff were very friendly.

Review 99:The shower water temperature fluctuated mid stream hot and cold. The light in the bathroom kept flicking on and off (room 34) Told reception upon leaving was just an overnight stay.

Review 100:location : central and convenient. Was offered a free upgrade as was expecting the same room type (facilities) as previous booking at the same rate.

Review 101:Not much information given by staff, eg how to get in after a night out ,( had to ask the security steet patrol), rang the night bell for about 5 mins , no information to tell us to go to side door .Also no info on breakfast .

Review 102:Warm ,clean , central

Review 103:The exterior charm isn't reflected in the new rooms.

Review 104:Good bathroom and parking

Review 105:excellent staff

Review 106:Staff really friendly lovely restaurant and excellent facilities

Review 107:Wedding party a little noisy

Review 108:Easy parking.

Review 109:The room was so small that I got claustrophobic

Review 110:Its central location, in the middle of the shopping area

Review 111:Loved the character of the old building. Had a nice meal in the restaurant.

Review 112:Good location, in town center and close to sea shore.

Review 113:Good location, parking lot close to the hotel, friendly staff

Review 114:I felt very safe and the staff were very accommodating

Review 115:the lift was very small and stairs rather steep

Review 116:our room was lovely and big, enjoyed the spa bath

Review 117:Room was not very silent, lot of noise from outside!

Review 118:Location, food, down to earth bar staff! Clean, value for money!

Review 119:The décor; dining room etc.

Review 120:central, bit of a view, lovely bar and restaurant

Review 121:right in the heart of town close to everything

Review 122:Excellent location for attending events in the Opera House-just across the road. Good restaurants and cafes nearby

Review 123:Not sure how to get in at night when doors locked and no- one responding to night bell.

Review 124:Location ideal

Review 125:the bed was a bit hard

Review 126:central location

Review 127:Hotel a little tired

Review 128:Great location, nice staff, live music in the bar.
