Reviews for Chifley Apartments Newcastle
Review 1:The room was not very clean at all. Very dusty and there were items missing in the toiletries in the bathroom. Also something stuck on the lounge which shows the room was not very well cleaned. No privacy, had to shut all the blinds as you are looking straight into other apartments
Review 2:Secure parking for $19
Review 3:Housekeeping was below standard and the parking fees were ridiculous. You can even get free parking in the heart of Sydney. This hotel is overpriced for the standard of the apartments.
Review 4:The pool is stunning, however not nearly enough outdoor furniture.
Review 5:For the value of $520 for 2 nights no housekeeping not worth it at all . Allergy attack from the amount of dust that was present . Beds like springs pushing in your back . Not comfortable at all !
Review 6:The room was not cleaned properly & the staff were unhelpful when we requested additional toiletaries & towels. Also, the car park gets too full & then they tell you to park in business parking spots. I'm paying $19 to park in the car park but they are using non chifley apartment spots - not right.
Review 7:Close location to restaurants
Review 8:The apartment was dirty and dusty. The bathroom tiles were particularly slippery when wet. There were no pans to cook breakfast with however there was a toaster.
Review 9:The vicinity to the harbour.
Review 10:Disinterested staff. Glass bedroom door provides no sound exclusion from the lounge. Noise from other apartments. Room not like photos. Another guest was checked in to our room and walked in on us - we were not put into in the room we booked - offered "a drink" as compensation. Serviced room at 3 days but did not change the sheets. Not worth the money at all.
Review 11:Location
Review 12:- gym was closed for entire stay. Why advertise it if only open business hours? - parking is a rip off. Local secure parking is $6 per day vs $19 per day at the hotel - apartment wasn't very clean. Had cockroaches at night.
Review 13:Central location, easy access to foreshore
Review 14:The bed was small and hard as a rock and the toilet was butted up against the shower screen which meant you had to sit at 45 degrees! We also couldn't get access to the gym.
Review 15:Large room and proximity to the waterfront
Review 16:I think the guest before us cooked 'game' meat in the apartment and there was a strong pungent smell for the first day or so - the cleaning lady was helpful and attempted to clear the smell from the room with carpet deodoriser.
Review 17:Location- facilities- friendly staff- helpful cleaning staff
Review 18:The lay out was terrible. You can't situatie on the toilet (to narrow ), showerhead is below shoulderhight. Hardly any kitchenutinsils. couch horrible to sit on. Zero cleaning in over a week or fill up toiletrolls etc, no emptying the bins . Fitness was a joke. more than half of the equipement was behind lock and key. Hotelstaff could not open it up. Even the airco did not work.
Review 19:The parking was good
Review 20:The payment/ surety deposit system needs to be changed. We gave a card & were told the hotel would hold $100 for incedentals. We were told this would be released in 3-5 days. When we checked out the whole bill + $100 had been held! We didn't want to use the card to pay. They ended up fixing things but it spoilt our stay.
Review 21:We had a great 2 nights stay! Our room had a balcony & everthing lovely. Fantastic location!
Review 22:The initial staff contact was a bit poor, the gentlemen at the desk seemed like he didn't want to be there. He check if our room would be ready as we were a little early which i understand check in was at 2. Made me park downstairs and then told me the room wouldn't be ready. I had a 3 year old with me and the last thing we wanted to do was walk around after with a child after a 2 hour drive. Communication could have been a little better. in saying that once the blonde lady took over it was much smoother and her approach was much better.
Review 23:the location was ok, clean apartment great views. comfortable room.
Review 24:Cockroaches...only two visible, but that means more unseen...would expect a company of this standing to do a lot more to keep the place free of such nasties.
Review 25:Well laid out apartment close to facilities and activities important to us.
Review 26:Staff stuffed booking up and the rooms were not clean. There were several rooms hired and all smelt like sewage in the bathroom from the drain pipes. Beds were uncomfortable and rooms weren't cleaned to a good standard. Had to ask front reception for extra toilet paper and towels. Not helpful. Drier in room didn't work so staff made us dry clothing in another room but wouldn't give us key to other room so would have to contact them for our stuff
Review 27:The card swiper getting into carpark. We had to swipe 15 times before calling night staff then other times it worked 2nd time swiped.
Review 28:We liked the full shower instead of standing in a bath to shower like other hotels. Nice and roomy. Had everything we wanted in the kitchen.
Review 29:Garage door sensors did not work and in the end the secure door was left up, it took numerous complaints to get the problem acknowledged. The floor in the unit was dirty on arrival. The washing machine was dirty inside and tap leaked onto floor and next to the power point. Advised reception who said they would send housekeeping to look at it, but day and a half later they still had not come to look or repair leak. This could have been a life threatening situation as the floor could have become live or even electrocuted someone. Mould on shower walls.
Review 30:Convenient location.
Review 31:Their was female hair throughout the bathroom floor, basin and shower. I don't travel with an internet chord to plug into the wall? My understanding is you need to pay extra for internet? This is disappointing. The Gym equipment was tied up ( I can understand for safety reasons but with all respect to the small business owner poor gym facility.
Review 32:There was one woman on check out who became rude after she was not able to operate the EFTPOS machine, (nor able to "solve" the problem). She had not asked for a PIN when she kept telling me the transaction was cancelled, not approved or declined. It cannot be declined or 'not approved' if she has not at first asked for a PIN. Instead of checking if the particular machine or whole system was down, she assumed the card was at fault. She wanted me to then pay by credit card (again assuming my other card was the fault, not her or the EFTPOS machine she was using). Another staff member used the other EFTPOS machine and the payment went through straight away. She did not apologise. She was rude. It soured my stay. The space in the bathroom to place your things was insufficient. The Internet is not free. It is too expensive. It would improve the accommodation to offer free wifi in the apartments.
Review 33:I liked the location, the spaciousness of the apartment, and the amenities and facilities (except more cabinet/bench space is needed in the bathroom to place things). The breakfast buffet is $17. It was convenient. There could be some more options available to make it better value, but I figured that by the time I walked somewhere else for breakfast, I may still pay a similar price elsewhere.
Review 34:Parking should be free, $19 is a bit steep for Newcastle when already paying approx $250 for 1 night. The couch could be replaced, as it wasn't very comfy.
Review 35:Great location, close to restaurants. Professional and friendly staff, quick check in and out. Loved that there were spare pillows, of different thickness!
Review 36:A 'hold' was put on my credit card of for the cost of the room, plus $50 extra a night for possible minibar use. After paying the bill for the room, my credit card/bank still had the $460 hold against my account even though the hotel bill had been paid. I'm effectively $460 out of pocket till I get this resolved. Internet is very expensive. Note, strreet parking is pricy during the day 0900-1700, everyday of the week.
Review 37:Great location, everything you require is provided.
Review 38:We stayed for a wedding and the apartments Are just above an awesome salon. Straight across the road there are multiple places to eat and relax for a drink!
Review 39:Dirty around the edges, mould in bathroom tiles, dust and skin in and around bed. Dirty dishes and cutlery.
Review 40:The size of the apartment and facilities of the room
Review 41:the room wasn't serviced daily which I would expect for the price paid.
Review 42:the location, the natural light, and the bathroom facilities (I like that it was a separate bathroom not an ensuite)
Review 43:The white bed doona was stained all over it, the room was VERY dusty and dirty. When complained they told us that the cleaners did not work weekends. The music was not available for a iphone 6 to connect to. The kettle was broken so continually boiled till it was dry. There was no shower caps provided. The room was way too expensive for the 3 star room. Would never stay there again.
Review 44:The location was excellent and the girl on the front desk was lovely.
Review 45:Although the view is lovely I prefer to have a dark room to be able to sleep in when I'm not with my kids. These rooms are very BRIGHT!
Review 46:Great location in Honeysuckle precinct. Close to restaurants, bars and Civic Theatre. Right on Newcastle Harbour.
Review 47:Parking was pricey compared to other apartments stayed in bigger cities. The people that lived at the apartments were rude.
Review 48:Clean, nice staff, perfect location. The peter morrissey toiletries were a nice touch.
Review 49:The pool was out of order which was annoying as we chose it over other similarly located (and cheaper) hotels because of this feature.
Review 50:Location was good, room was spacious.
Review 51:We chose the hotel because of its location and the pool.we wanted a night away where we could relax. We went to the pool and saw it was 'closed for maintenance'. When we went to reception the girl behind the desk was not at all apologetic and did not try to compensate us.
Review 52:The location
Review 53:We had breakfast half an hour before closing and the hot water was tepid. Maybe because it was almost closing time.
Review 54:The location by the sea and the boardwalk beside it just great for walks and strolls. The room is very nice and bed comfortable. The whole set up is homely. Car park is right underneath the hotel and adequately priced. Loved it.
Review 55:2 of the staff where very rude and not interested in helping or being nice. Rolled their eyes at us as they had to come and let us in after hours as our key would not work, and also came to the door with no shoes on. Did not greet us and gave us very unwelcoming looks. Fold out bed was broken, shower flooded all over bathroom floor
Review 56:Nice and quiet location in a good spot. Common area facilities were nice and convenient. The nice staff were lovely and very welcoming.
Review 57:No room service if I knew that I would've bookef else where!! Room service while away important to me!!
Review 58:The lovely lady who helped me at thw front desk!!
Review 59:glass wall and sliding door between bedroom, let too much light in, not soundproof when my daughter joined me for nights 2 + 3...not near retail...be aware Newcastle CBD no longer had much retail...it's all out in suburban shopping centres...so buying food for self catering requires car/bus to them
Review 60:good location - easily accessible from airport, less than 5 mins walk from the new, developing wharf regeneration, museums, restaurants, bars etc area
Review 61:In our three night stay we had to have our key cards replaced 7 times as we could not get access in or out of car park or exit out of car park to lift lobby. I have a walking disability and this required me to have to walk up fire escape stairs to foyer. Also on arrival they put hold on total accom costs plus bond totalling $761 on debit card. On checking out they then took an additional $648 for our total stay. 48 hours later they still are holding our $761. We are pensioners and this will stop us from staying in premises like this in the future.
Review 62:Location of premises was very good.
Review 63:Car park is too narrow & 1 x card didn't work properly. Slot to return card on check out is not accessible without physically getting out of the car. Very inconvenient.
Review 64:Room was very quiet; just what we asked for. Short stroll to restaurants.
Review 65:Mattress wasn't the best, springs could be felt along the side of mattress when sitting on bed,(505)
Review 66:Spacious rooms, clean and presentable, close walk to beach/wharf/shops and eating out
Review 67:The place is a little pricey. I paid it because of a 30th close by other wise I would stay some where cheaper.
Review 68:The staff are super friendly and the place is very clean and ideally located for Honey Suckle!
Review 69:If only we could have had 2 comfortable beds. If I was travelling as a couple this would have worked out but you have to pay extra to use a sofa bed and as it was the Easter weekend we were only serviced once due to staff not being employed.
Review 70:Closeness to esplanade and township.
Review 71:Having never been to Newcastle we were feeling a little overwhelmed on arrival. But location of the Chifley was amazing. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Apartment was spotless.
Review 72:Close to where we wanted to get to. The Newcastle Civic, Honeysuckle, Derby street restaurants. The rooms are spacious and kitchen available makes it easy.
Review 73:This is not a bad experience, just a minor thing, the pillows could be softer maybe. And just a little difficulty to raise the car park roller door, card read.
Review 74:The location was great, very central. Staff excellent, a big thank you for locating the 2 items left in room. Much appreciated.
Review 75:Don't bother connecting/buying wifi - it's incredibly slow and unreliable.
Review 76:Great size apartment close proximity to the city and waterfront dining
Review 77:1. The female staff member on arrival needed a course in Customer Service and was very rude. Her supervisor was standing beside her. 2. Hard to arrive at garage as approached from Settlement Lane and couldnt turn left
Review 78:The male staff member on the desk was really pleasant.
Review 79:The address is misleading - it's hard to find as it's not on Honeysuckle Drive. The Keycard reader for entry to the parking constantly malfunctioned and we regularly had to be let in by other guests or call the staff. The corridors were not air-conditioned and very hot, and free Wi-Fi was only available in the lobby or breakfast area, not the room. Balcony nice.
Review 80:Staff were very helpful and friendly
Review 81:I booked a one bedroom apt however it was not a true bedroom but a frosted glass wall dividing the bedroom from the living room. It was not particularly private.
Review 82:Location and facilities were good. Staff were very friendly and accommodating.
Review 83:The aircond was very noisy in the room we were given, but a 2nd room organised promptly. Unfortunately the clothes drier in that room had a problem with the bearings in the drum, scared the life out of Me. But housekeeping & reception sympathetic & prompt to review.
Review 84:Great location for access to the wharf area of Newcastle.
Review 85:IF your are on foot, the area is not the optimum in order to visit Newcastle properly-better rent a car. Visiting on foot, is easily reachable by bus/train but there are not many things to do and see around. The windows were single glare and at some point I could hear the noise from the street. The coffee to take away + muffin were not tasty.
Review 86:Lots of things were offered such as : washing machine, dryer and fully equipped kitchen. Very luminous place relatively near supermarkets and restaurants. It seemed very clean in total.Fast Internet was offered for free in the lobby. The personnel was fantastic, very polite!
Review 87:Couch could be more comfortable Cheapest ironing board you could find? Too easy to knock over, its dangerous.
Review 88:Proximity to harbour Proximity to restaurants Space After hours access
Review 89:Good size room and good layouts. Kitchen was quite small but well equipped. Pool looks much better in the pictures. Overall, a bit pricey for what it was.
Review 90:Friendly staff, clean and spacious room in a good location close to bars and restaurants.
Review 91:I wouldn't call it a bad experience...I find the beds way too hard for my liking
Review 92:We love the Honey Suckle area & always stay at the Chifley Apartments
Review 93:Staff were great however, there was some confusion as to what I had paid for in cash and what was charged to my card resulting in double charges. Was the only negative of the weekend.
Review 94:For a short weekend stay, the location was excellent and within walking distance of all main areas of attraction. Above all, excellent accomodation, great view, location by the water and restaurants perfect, and staff were very friendly and helpful when needed. I would highly recommend this hotel.
Review 95:I sat on the carpet for about 20 minutes and broke out into a huge rash! All at back of my legs and backside. Had bites all over me was horrible
Review 96:Location was great! close to restaurants bars and shops. Nice to go for a walk at the near by harbour.
Review 97:The mattress was very hard and uncomfortable
Review 98:We love the location of the Chifley and often stay whilst visiting Newcastle. Always clean and is handy to many great cafes and restaurants
Review 99:The kitchen had only very basic utensils; there was no chopping board. We stayed for 3 nights and had to keep asking for extras like more dishwashing liquid sachets, garbage bags, etc. each of which there were only two.
Review 100:The location was excellent:- close to the foreshore with its restaurants and a short drive to the beach. The staff were friendly and very obliging.
Review 101:The room was set to accommodate 3 people. The sofa bed in the loungearea was a wreck! The sleeper ended up in the middle due to the slope. There is nowhere in the bathroom to put personal toiletries, razors etc. There needs to be a shelf in there.
Review 102:The proximity of the apartments to bars, restaurants and shops was verygood. Room was very adequate and parking cheaper @ $19pn than the nearbyCrowne Plaza @ $25pn.. However cp does have valet parking. The roomswere quiet as was the rest of the building.
Review 103:We had a room for 3 persons, sofa bed was suppose to be made up. Notice it wasn't when we went to room after checkin, Mentioned to staff when we went out & still not made up when we got back at 11.30pm. Rang & they delivered a folding bed.
Review 104:For an apartment in this price range the Chifley did not match up. The bed was supposed to be a king size and it was lucky to be a queen, when the size issue of the bed was discussed with reception we were basically told to bad that's all we have. The mattress was lumpy and uncomfortable, the linen whilst clean was not of a newer standard and was Bally and scratchy, the pillows were flat and of poor condition. The bathroom while spacious had a malfunctioning light and the floor was not clean and had a greasy layer of film on it. The lounge area was of an adequate size but the couch was of poor quality and uncomfortable to sit on. The only internet available in the room was cable not wifi. Which was not stated in the add. The kitchen facilities were of a poor standard with only cheap tea and coffee making facilities. There was limited information in the room on what was available in the local area. The swipe cards were temperamental and needed to be swiped up To 5 times to work. The gym facility was not as advertised, it was run by a personal trainer and needed an extra charge to paid to use the equipment. I would not stay here again.
Review 105:The location was ok, close proximity to water front and places to eat
Review 106:Room overlooked the pool and didn't feel very private. Check out was a little slow as there was only one staff member and they were also trying to organise Coffees etc. for other guests.
Review 107:Handy location close to great restaurants. Friendly, helpful staff. Clean spacious room. Good secure undercover parking.
Review 108:I asked for a sofa bed to be included in the room, was not supplied. The trains were very loud. A few extra towels would have been handy
Review 109:Plenty of space to be able to relax without feeling suffocated in a small hotel room. Great location to the harbourside restaurants, although couldn't get into any for dinner as were soo busy, so had to drive elsewhere.
Review 110:The only problem was that superficially the room was clean but when we had to move something on the floor it was very dusty and the inside of the oven had to be cleaned before use. I am sure if I had informed reception staff at the time they would have sent somebody up to attend to it. The flat is serviced by cleaners if you stay more than 3 nights which was fine by us but it was not vacuumed which is probably essential
Review 111:Reception staff were very friendly efficient and helpful.Location is great on the harbour and opposite the train station. The kitchen facilities were great and enabled me to cook a meal for relatives during our stay. Small but fantastic gym facilities available 6am to 8pm and good size swimming pool.
Review 112:Cockroaches in the kitchen/ lounge area. The electronic key card was unreliable. I had to have mine reset three times during a six day stay.
Review 113:Staff friendly and a modern property.
Review 114:As non smokers, in the mornings and evenings cigarette smoke from the neighbours wofted in which meant we needed to keep our window and door shut during this time. We were told that we could have changed rooms if they hadn't been sold out. Just a suggestion, maybe non smokers can be placed in a collective section.
Review 115:Our experience was fantastic. You can park the car undercover in their secure parking and walk everywhere, as you are so close to everything.
Review 116:No bench space for cooking
Review 117:Loved apt and staff were friendly and helpful. Had to leave day early due to med emergency...they refunded a day even though my prepaid package deal didn't cover it! Stay there again in a heartbeat! Suggestion: Could use some fauna/colour in apts though... Rather bland :( Thanks again Kate from Sydney
Review 118:The room swipe cards were quite bad, often had troubles getting into the pool, gym and personal room. (May have only been our particular Cards) and also in saying that the staff were more then happy to help out.
Review 119:Great Location if your after a hotel in the honeysuckle district.
Review 120:We stayed 3 nights but the apartment wasn't cleaned once. I have never had this happen before. Also we asked for 3 seperate beds but had to haggle to get them.
Review 121:We liked the location of the hotel and the staff
Review 122:There's was no restaurant for rooms service. No pamphlets or information for surrounding restaurants or for take away or some sort of tourist guide.
Review 123:Hotel room was exquisite, very clean.
Review 124:Dirty rooms and stained bedclothes with hairs
Review 125:Nice location close to waterfront amenities.
Review 126:Could have had some more pool chairs and umbrella outside for shade
Review 127:The pool and rooms were a good size
Review 128:No a thing.
Review 129:Beautiful location with friendly staff and a comfortable bed. Everything you could have possibly expected.
Review 130:The bed was really hard. I was locked out of the room 4 times as the card didn't work. The room wasn't very clean.
Review 131:Very comfortable and roomy for two people. Staff friendly and helpful
Review 132:The hallways were hot The bed was bowed & uncomfortable
Review 133:Location was excellent for what we wanted
Review 134:Room really does need a good clean.
Review 135:Fabulous location & great facilities.
Review 136:No free Wifi in rooms, only in foyer.
Review 137:Very close (walking distance) to the wharf eateries and bars. Also near railway station.
Review 138:Beds a bit uncomfortable
Review 139:The staff were amazing. Location fantastic
Review 140:Prompt service at the desk and nice clean room. Staff were also very helpful regarding the local area,.
