Reviews for Kivulini Luxury Resort
Review 1:The menu is so limited and buffet dinner is really expensive if you're on bed and breakfast budget! They dont give an al a carte option after 8pm, so you have to pay for buffet if you're really starving. The hotel is also far from town so you really have no option but to buy that buffet dinner!
Review 2:the pools and views
Review 3:Permeating our stay was the bizarre and very uncomfortable sense that we were imposing in someone else's home.Unfortunately, the large Italian family running this hotel had a propensity to swan around, sitting center stage at mealtimes, poolside and in the bar, making no effort to engage with guests (I don't think we elicited so much as a smile or a "hello" from the family the whole time we were there). It seemed that the white staff were invited to dine with the family at dinner (at their large table, reserved in the center of the dining room), but no Kenyans were invited. It felt very much as if the family, Italian chef and Russian manager were on their own holiday and the guests were getting in the way. A big shame as a hotel / resort being family-run is usually something we look for.We had some issues over the time we were there, which were appallingly handled. Specifically, we upgraded to all-inclusive and were told that all drinks, except imported alcohol, were included, as were snacks. As you will see below, there was a great deal that wasn't included and snacks were limited to cold food laid out at the bar at particular times.Because we were given incorrect information about what was and wasn't included, we repeatedly found ourselves in the embarrassing situation of being presented with a bill to sign after consuming whatever we thought was included, but was, in fact, not. On day two of our stay we noticed a (very small) sign on Reception informing us of a 5% charge for paying by card. I asked to speak to a Manager about this (he was behind Reception in the Office) and was told he would find me. Many hours later and fed-up of waiting, I had to find him. Our water went off one evening. A plumber was called, but no one from the hotel management supervised him, or stayed until the problem was fixed (in fact, they were too busy drinking and socialising in the bar).
Review 4:This is a small hotel, in a beautiful setting, with well-maintained public areas and pools. We had a warm welcome, with a refreshing drink, when we arrived. With the exception of the female bar manager, the Kenyan staff were fantastic - the stand-out staff for us being: Jacob, Patrick, Charo, Rose, the Pool Attendants, Joseph (housekeeping) and a young, male, Kenyan chef. The food was plentiful and BBQ / grill options were great, as was the pasta. By day six we found the number of repetitions on the cold food / salads a bit boring and the deserts could do with more variety, but the pastry chef should be applauded for his great mango and passion fruit jellies and really delicious chocolate cake.
Review 5:The management were nothing short of disgraceful in my view. The European Management (Italian Directors) seemed to be too busy 'swanning around' and having a nice time and made myself and my family feel like not very welcome guests to their playground home. We had a number of issues (fairly small), which their attitude meant they turned into real negatives. They gave no impression of having interest in their guests or their happiness. We booked for all exclusive and then spent the whole week arguing about different items we were subsequently told needed paying for separately (despite at the time of booking and during the stay not being given a clear list of exclusions). We were told non European drinks were included, but then that certain drinks also needed paying for. Coffee was an exclusion!! Quite incredible really. We were also told that we could ask for snacks during the day as part of the all inclusive, but when we asked for this during the day we were either told no, or asked to pay for it. When we took this up with management, we were made to feel like we were bothering them. Our son had an egg allergy, which we made clear, but when we asked for fruit snack during the afternoon as we was unable to eat the cake (made with egg) that was on offer, we were told it wasn't possible. Also, on one evening of our stay, our showers weren't working. This took over 5 hours to fix. The management did not communicate with us on progress - we had to go and find them and ask for an update on several occasions. I was told twice that the problem was definitively fixed and then upon my checking, found it still wasn't working. We made it clear that we were unhappy and dealt with it as reasonably as possible at first, but the repeated disinterested of the management lead to us getting very frustrated. We made it clear we were very unhappy. On checking out, we had to leave early to catch our flight.
Review 6:The Kenyan staff were a fine example of customer service. Nothing was too much trouble - they were polite, chatty (without talking too much) and incredibly accommodating. The resort itself it idyllic - beautiful pool with a view of the beach and a luxury feel across the resort. You couldn't help but relax in these surroundings with the lovely weather to support it.
Review 7:The food variety can do with some improvement.
Review 8:The location was beautiful. It's isolated so it's away from the noise of the city. The staff are exemplary. Friendly and very helpful
Review 9:some parts of the facilities need some upgrade, for example Billiard table. No Gym facilities. Water by the glass if you booked all inclusive.
Review 10:very friendly staff, good food, big pool , comfortable bed and rooms. Good and quiet location and entertainment.
Review 11:the location (no beach, unpleasent shoreline, far away from town), place seems a bit worn down as nobody goes there, safe is there but u don't get a key, telephone is there, but doesn't work, etc. etc. you need to get transport to town, taxi drivers picked from the hotel are not reliable (waiting 90 minutes and more for a drive which would take just 10 minutes) - this happened repeatedly not only once!
Review 12:only the cheap offer was good, but no wonder with that location
Review 13:There was no entertainment and no wi fi access in the bedrooms . Although the beach was stunning you had to take a bus to get there , I was led to believe the hotel was on the beach which unfortunately was not fact .
Review 14:The tranquil and relaxing atmosphere . Friendly and helpful staff . Nearby beautiful beach .
Review 15:The food and drinks were abit expensive and the fact that the swimming pool didn't have the holding bars was a but risky. Also, the tv channels require more variety.
Review 16:Exclusivity, and the fact that the staff were very helpful and courteous. The welcome was amazing and the tour packages were classic. I'd definitely recommend anyone to go there.
Review 17:location was a bit far off, last 10 minutes access road drive was rough, but nothing too bad. the only negative was really no access to good beach.
Review 18:staff and the peace
Review 19:Small, boring rooms. Very far from town on a dirt road , so taxis charge 2000 ksh to get there. Food was so so ,as is the beach (tons of sea grass )
Review 20:Great staff, pretty property
Review 21:They were completely inflexible with food. According to hotel description on booking.com, there were two meal options: a restaurant a la carte or all inclusive. However, the first didn't work. Even though they had a menu with prices, the manager would always make problems when we wated to order just one dish for dinner. They always tried to force us to take an all inclusive dinner, while we do not eat late meals. Even when sick and had just one tea, they stubbornly billed us as for all inclusive. Also, the breakfast started at 8-8.30 a.m., so when we wanted to go diving or for an excursion, an early breakfast was not an option and they wanted to charge us extra for a take-away breakfast box. Because of that, using restaurant always was an unpleasant experience. Should we know this before, we would just have choosen another hotel. To sum up, I wouldn't recommend this hotel to those who do not like an all inclusive meal plans. The hotel can be good on more sedentary and all inclusive basis.
Review 22:Big swimming pool Cleanliness Nice environment
Review 23:Our room wasnt cleaned one day.
Review 24:Tucked away in a quiet area, perfect for relaxation. They provide transport to town (at a fee) when one needs to venture out. They tried to mix up the food a bit, even serving African food one day. Made an effort to provide entertainment. Management dined and mingled with guests.
Review 25:Slow staff at the kitchen, 1h to make a burger? Beach is not for swimming because of the low tide
Review 26:Swimming Pool Hotel Indoor Friendly Staff Buffet Food Well organized Various excursions
Review 27:need a sink inthe dinning for hand washing. -improve in toileterly supply inthe rooms ie tissues and soups.
Review 28:the hotel was exclusive hence ensuring privacy of guest. -the deap sea bout exclusion was enjoyable. -staff were both friendly and clean.
Review 29:Very limited TV programs. Swimming pool was not cleaned properly (plenty of leaves in it). The access road was unpaved.
Review 30:Quiet. Good Price. Friendly staff.
Review 31:wifi not available in the room only at bar and reception but they are working on it. Only 4 tv-channels 3 of them italian. Mattress could be better. When I paid with mastercard I had to pay 5% more. When there is low tide there are some conmen on the beach who can be pretty dangerous.
Review 32:the pool, the hotel area with all the animals including some monkeys, my room, being close to the ocean.
Review 33:A wider à la carte restaurant offering is my only suggestion to improve this great resort.
Review 34:Staff well trained; Resort beautiful and well kept; Rooms clean and well maintained; Good food quality.
Review 35:That snacks served in minibar are so expensive. Drinks like soda and water are also a bit exaggerated. Beers are ok.
Review 36:I liked the ocean view, the beautiful pool, the humble staff, the hygiene levels, the nice chefs and their excellent meals. Thanks for the cakes and the gift for my little gal. Paula you are one great Italian, with a warm smile and heart, my family and me loved u a lot.
Review 37:No blanket on the beds, telephone didn't work, breakfast was almost out of food only one hour after being open, but the big one is that you can't swim at the beach of the hotel you have to go to another beach 5 min drive away.

Review 62:Many seaweed on the beach
Review 63:Friendly staff Clean room Price!
Review 64:Nothing
Review 65:Friendly and helpful staff Luxury rooms Nice pool Great food
Review 66:An usable beach in front of the hotel would be nice, but it was not that missing, since the pool was nice and a trip to the next beach was offered by the hotel team.
Review 67:We (couple, 3year old child and mother-in-law) stayed for 1 week on beginning of February 2014. It was an incredible stay, one of the best hotels we have been to. Nice rooms (well equiped), extreme helpful and attentive staff (Andrea helped us a lot with our whishes, free upgrade to a better room category), great location and very nice ambiente. Very good food, an amazing child care for free. There was really nothing to complain about. Everyone should book here, you get a great value for your money. We will come definitely back for another holiday. This is how holiday should be!
Review 68:Maybe a bit more comprehensive layout/information on costs eg. costs of the trips, exclusive offers eg. which services have to be paid for outside a booked package etc. just a simple general layout of this for the clients so that a general idea of outstanding costs at the end of the stay can be calculated
Review 69:Kivulini Resort is a beautiful stay with an amazing view of the ocean. The silence in the atmosphere is just Royal. Very peaceful and comfortable. The staff are amazing, very friendly and always ready to assist. My wife and I enjoyed the stay and we believe that it is a place to seriously consider if you are looking for peace of mind, exotic ocean view swims, lunches and walks as well as amazingly good food!
Review 70:The private beach was a 10 minute drive away and getting to the town of malindi required a shuttle service for a small fee.
Review 71:The service was impeccable with staff very helpful and welcoming with all requests. Amazing buffet. Good massage service.
Review 72:The menu was very limited and repetitive. It is very isolated and so we had to eat in the hotel most of the time. There was transport to Malindi at a cost. The rooms had few complimentary toiletries which are usually supplied in most hotels. The beach was small and private but covered with seaweed so you couldn't really walk on it or go swimming. This could have easily been raked clean. The rooms were decorated 'au natural' supposedly Kenyan style but actually just looked like bear concrete. There was only one night of entertainment and no other activities.
Review 73:The staff were very helpful and friendly
Review 74:The location was a tad remote - with a 2 or 3 km really rough road. It was scary to drive along the stretch at night but credit to management they did provide a shuttle / reliable taxis to local clubs at night.
Review 75:Stayed there for 2 nights in December and we had a fabulous time. The staff were outstanding - really went out of their way to make our stay comfortable. The facilities were good, really nice pool and cosy loungers. Plus it was absolute value for money.
Review 76:A bit out if the way, but didn't really matter because there is the shuttle bus or tuc-tucs available.
Review 77:Where do I begin - I loved it all! We were greeted upon arrival by one of the managers who offered us a welcome drink, which is where the excellent treatment began - I felt like I was family! The room/suite was enormous, and perfectly appointed. All staff was extremely accommodating, the food was excellent, grounds fabulous, the pool out of this world! Entertainment was always available for the children also. Looking forward to going back. (This may sound overdone, but I honestly enjoyed every bit of it, and I'm not easy to please.)
Review 78:Road is quite rough to the hotel, which is quite out of their control.
Review 79:Once you reach the hotel, the ambiance is quite good. Pool is very inviting and well maintained. Staff are extremely friendly and go out of their way to help you.
Review 80:I have no complains whatsoever really!
Review 81:I stayed there for four nights and it was an amazing time. The beds are so big and comfortable, the rooms are big and spacious. I particularly like the attention and genuine service I got from the staff. The pool is star of the art!! They have transport to and fro at very affordable prices. The food is very and there was variety to choose from. Everywhere you go you are greeted with smiles. Yoga in the morning with Anya and games in the pool. At night they have entertainment in the hall for everyone and kids too. It's family friendly, couple friendly and if you want to detox and relax this is the place to go. I will be going back again!
Review 82:not being served breakfast at your room.

Review 84:II didn't like the halfly cooked foods and I propose you have a baby menu whereby there is special foods for babies without spices..
Review 85:I liked the warm welcome by everybody including the staff and the management.I liked the performance by the animators.I liked the location of the resort and more especially the stretch exercises by aniah
Review 86:Better information about area beaches and local restaurants would have been helpful.
Review 87:The hotel is very well laid out, the chef superb, and we really found the resort completely relaxing. The staff went the extra effort to provide a first class experience.
