Reviews for Birdsong Backpackers
Review 1:Our room was very nice and we liked the balcony. Too bad it was a bit rainy in the morning of our departure so we couldn't enjoy our morning tea sitting on the balcony, but then again, there was a nice fireplace in the common room. The beach was just across the road from the hostel and the glowworm place wasn't too far either. We got a handy map and good advice from the staff so we could do a bit of grocery shopping in town. The place was lovely and quiet when we slept there, so we really got a nice sleep.
Review 2:Friendly owner, nice and chatty. I had a double room facing the ocean, the bed was very comfy and warm, with additional blanket provided. Kitchen well equipped. Free wifi. Location is fine if you have your own transport, it's a couple of km north of town though.
Review 3:The bed was quite creaky and being located right next to the motorway did affect my sleep.
Review 4:The facilities and the staff were great. Made me feel very welcome. Being close, but not in, the city was a real bonus.
Review 5:I was warmly welcomed, the staff is easygoing and funny. The kitchen and social areas are well laid out and have ocean view. The rooms are decently sized and the beds among the comfiest I had during my trip.
Review 6:very noisy at night with heavy trucks hurtling past... (upstairs room facing highway)
Review 7:lovely individual touches; super clean; great kitchen and living area, highly recommended apart from the road noise at night
Review 8:The room we were in was on the ground floor and the dining area was right above it so we heard every noise from there including children leaping around in the morning.
Review 9:We thought we had booked through Booking.com but they couldn't find it the day before we were arriving but they managed to fit us in anyway. I liked how the owners like to have a chat and are very friendly.
Review 10:Room was hot. No fly screens so Mosquitos would get in. Stuffed animal on bed which there was no where to put so went on the floor. Floor was dirty. Shower curtain mouldy. There was also a weird Perspex lid on top of the shower which made you feel claustrophobic and showering as if you were in a coffin. The whole place is only 10years old but feels like it's much older. Feels dingy and dirty.
Review 11:Downstairs shower was a bit too pokey but I guess couldn't be helped.
Review 12:The views. Spacious and well set out dining, kitchen and lounge facilities. Art works. Good labels. Tidy gardens.
Review 13:We were stranded in Franz Josef because we had some problem with our car. It was late at night already and we couldn't reach Hokitika in time. We emailed the owner about our situation but he seemed to be unsympathetic and was "a little sorry" for us. As we didn't even use the facilities at all, we requested for a cancellation but the owner insisted on charging us full price. We just thought that he could be more understanding. Book this place only when u r 100% sure to reach there in time.
Review 14:Nothing!
Review 15:Loved the bird theme of each room, gorgeous view from the common area where I could read by the fire and look at the ocean, owners brought delicious cake up to us, kitchen facilities are incredibly clean and well-stocked
Review 16:Kitchen/lounge with view of ocean was lovely. Manager had lots of tips and was very accommodating.
Review 17:The room is immediately facing the state highway. Trucks and cars passingall the time with a lot of noise.
Review 18:A bit far away from the "center" of town. Better to have a car, otherwise long walk (~2km) to shops and restaurants
Review 19:Very nice and cosy!
Review 20:So many personal touches and individual care.
Review 21:No bad experience
Review 22:the whole house was tasteful and had a friendly atmosphere. The kitchen was clean and plates were matching !
Review 23:Fresh bread. Scones with jam and yoghurt on arrival. Helpful advice. Interested staff
Review 24:Management were very friendly and up for a chat whenever you wanted
Review 25:No Television
Review 26:Location Staff Other vacationers
Review 27:Cheating price and unfair deal, the hostel keeper was not friendly.
Review 28:Free scones and cream Spacious kitchen lounge facilities Good showers with plenty of hot water
Review 29:My room was on the carpark side so there was noise of people on the gravel paths, and talking as they were outside the window,. however there would have been road noise on the other side so it's difficult to get a great night's sleep.
Review 30:The bathrooms were clean.
Review 31:Road traffic was a little noisy(ground floor nearest the road), but no problem once the outside door and windows were closed
Review 32:The bird themed artwork, well equipped, clean and tidy kitchen
Review 33:It wasn't very well lit up driving at night and I would of drove straight past had it not been for my sat nav.
Review 34:I arrived quite late at the hotel but had rang beforehand and the owner said it wasn't a problem and they would leave my key on the door. The bed was really comfortable and the room was colourful and quirky. There were outlets to charge phones, camera etc. the shower was nice and powerful although there was only one upstairs. I didn't use the kitchen or lounge facilities, as I arrived late and left early the next morning. The owner gave me some good advice on looking for jobs and was very friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend and will return if I am ever passing that way again.
Review 35:Saw a white tail. And if you don't have a car, the town is quite far. I was lucky enough, that the intercity bus driver dropped us off by the hostel.
Review 36:Great shower! Love the water pressure. Excellent kitchen, sharp knives and all. Great host, and over all a very cosy lodge type of backpackers.
Review 37:You have to time your shower around others- no big deal.
Review 38:Nice change from the motel experience. No TV and shared common areas means you have the chance to meet and interact with other travelers. The large kitchen had adequate refrigerator and shelf spaces for our food.
Review 39:Friendly welcome, instantly put at ease. Shown around facilities. Excellent local knowledge. Room was comfortable and wow what a view overlooking sea. Friendly environment with communal area for talking with other travellers or back to room with balcony for some privacy. Good facilities for cooking in kitchen or like us we used a gas Barbeque in the terrace outside. Shared shower and bathroom which was fine as there were 3 in total and there was no overcrowding which can cause waiting. No problem here though. Hostel is 15 minute walk from Hokitika with shops on town boundary or further 5 minutes into town centre for supermarket, shops, restaurants/bars. Despite not making use of bikes they were available which was a bonus.
Review 40:our room quite close to the road, so first night little noisy. Other rooms would be no problem.
Review 41:we loved the character of the place, the views of the sea, the friendly staff, the paintings and art were amazing. the kitchen well equpped, fantastic supply of hot water in showers.
Review 42:Very noisy with trucks going by throughout the night. Uncomfortable pillow... Swapped it for a better one on my second night.
Review 43:Friendly helpful staff...
Review 44:We booked a double and a single room. When we arrived only a double was available. It was too late to change accommodation and we had to stay there, however it has been very disappointing.
Review 45:I couldn't see the baby black swans b/c the parents were very protective. And the black sand beach across the street was very cold to walk on. Basically, the place was stunning!
Review 46:The hosts were welcoming and filled with knowledge about all there is to do in Hokitika. The bed was comfortable, and the room spacious with a great view of the ocean. The hostel was spotless and had everything for cooking (space included) in the kitchen. Soft towels. Nice guests. Heavenly!
Review 47:room is a little small
Review 48:full facilities in the kitchen, and the owner is really nice man.
Review 49:extremely nice place - makes you feel home immediately
Review 50:The room was tiny and not sound proof. A little damp.
Review 51:Traffic Noise throughout the night
Review 52:Atmosphere
Review 53:shared combined toilet and shower
