Reviews for Shining Star Beachfront Accommodation
Review 1:Hairdryer is the disaster cuz it cuts off automatically after 15 seconds and u need to wait another minute to restart!
Review 2:The chalet is very clean and nicely arranged. Animal farm very cute with 2 alpacas even!
Review 3:Bathroom needs a refresh. No restaurant within the resort, kitchen a bit on the small side
Review 4:Beautifully located in front of the ocean, nice resort atmosphere. Clean and extremely kind staff
Review 5:The decking area didn't have much privacy from the other units joined to ours
Review 6:I liked the location and the view of the beach. Also I could walk out the back section straight to the beach.
Review 7:Beautiful beachfront location. Clean and convenient cabin with all necessary amenities, including laundry. Within walking distance from restaurants and shops.
Review 8:Paid for ocean/beach view and could just see a narrow strip of blue across the field.
Review 9:Near the beach and just at the edge of town. Well-equipped chalet. Lots of information provided on a TV channel of things to do.
Review 10:We stayed in a beach front triple chalet. Nice, comfortable chalet overlooking the beach. Hokitiki is a nice town for one or two nights stay on your way down the west coast. You can go and see glow worms in a little dell opposite the hotel once it gets dark.
Review 11:TV reception poor. Had 2 night stay, room serviced which I didn't think was necessary
Review 12:Ideal beach side location, 10 minute stroll into town of Hokitika. Our lodge was clean, well appointed, had washing up liquid, cloth and tea towel provided which was handy. Spa bath was relaxing, toiletries and lovely towels. Heater/air con.
Review 13:Nothing to dislike
Review 14:An excellent location close to the beach and set in well maintained gardens. The two bedroom unit was spacious, comfortable and well equipped. The village is in tip top condition.
Review 15:Noise of footsteps when walked from upstairs to downstairs. Noise from neighbors could be heard.
Review 16:Basic accommodation and location is 2 mins drive to supermarket.
Review 17:No bath
Review 18:Beachfront with glow worm dell across the road. Farm animals and kids play area on site. Very comfortable room and a good rest stop if travelling through the region.
Review 19:Not enough hangers in wardrobe for coats. Not enough hooks in toilets for towels.
Review 20:Booked the Beach Front king size bed chalet, was allotted rm #5 - superb view of the beach and very quiet too. Great location to town. Friendly staff. Great water pressure. Portable heater and aircon with heating function is great for the cold - it was 5 degrees Celsius when we were in Hokitika.
Review 21:We really liked this accommodation. As it is next to the beach we had a nice walk there in the morning. Also the check-in and out was easy going and we got warmly welcomed. The house is great and offered everything we needed.
Review 22:Nothing
Review 23:Great location literally steps from the beach. The resort is so serene and peaceful. Having a private chalet made us feel like we were the only one's there. Good size spa bath, bathroom and kitchen facilities
Review 24:Everything! This place was great! We had a chalet on the beach front, excellent facilities, friendly helpful staff and gorgeous fit out of the chalet.
Review 25:Just felt a little unwelcome on reception and on departure , staff maybe tired ? No offer of the breakfast we didn't know it was an option , we would have done that bed was a little too firm but everything else was fine
Review 26:Location and facilities peaceful place perfect
Review 27:It was central to everything we wanted to see. It was a nice friendly park. I also thought the camp kitchen was excellent, we did use it on one occasion for a BBQ.
Review 28:Lot further from the beach then was suggested also you still have to walk around to get to the beach also the shower was not much and the heat pump was not up doing its job
Review 29:Over priced. Booked this accommodation thinking that we gonna get free spa and sauna but found out that it's charged at $25 each.
Review 30:Convinient location, quiet room with not much neighbours, kitchen good equipped
Review 31:Bed was a bit hard affecting quality of sleep.
Review 32:Great location for us and had all the things we needed. Spa and sauna awesome additions that made a difference. Sounds of the sea and watching its moods was great too.
Review 33:Beautifully located cottages on the border of the beach. We had a magnificent stay and wish we didn't have to leave after just 1 night. Very comfortable, clean and spacious cottage.
Review 34:Only gripe, please can they up grade the cooker hobs and put In gas burners!! Other than that 10/10.
Review 35:Location, cleanliness of room, very comfortable bed.
Review 36:Loved that the beach was within walking distance and on the top side of the township and easy to find. Also enjoyed walked over to the glow worm glen, amazing.
Review 37:there was an awful sewage smell coming from the area by the bed adjacent the bathroom, we didn't notice it as much with the heat pump blowing a little air around until we turned if off to sleep, we told the staff and would of appreciated a refund of some description, there had been a lot of rain and staff put it down to that, however the explanation while understandable didn't do a lot for the lack of sleep and discomfort
Review 38:Place was clean and location was good - smell was not
Review 39:nothing
Review 40:We stayed in a gorgeous 2 bedroom unit right on the beachfront. Absolutely beautiful - the unit had everything you could possibly need for a relaxing stay. The heating was fantastic and the wifi was fast - priority for a teen!
Review 41:Beautiful outlook . The proximity to the beach is great. Bed wonderful. We so appreciate being able to bring our well behaved dog ! Cleanliness 10 out of 10. Thank you
Review 42:Nothing.
Review 43:Of all the places on the S. Island, this was our favorite. We loved our little log cabin chalet on the beach. We loved the little community, and the beach was beautiful including sunset. I wish we had had a week. It would be perfect for a extended family.
Review 44:Wifi signal is not that good.
Review 45:I booked room for two but it turns out to be room for six! lovely balcony and bathroom facilities. Nice and very kind staff.
Review 46:I suppose you could say cos we were in cabins which were in half of the whole building not much privacy. And our neighbouring visitors were looking right into our room too.
Review 47:We loved the surroundings and the sound of the waves they the night
Review 48:A/C didn't work well, and I didn't find the heating for the bed until I left, so it was a little cold when I slept. Wasn't informed of free wifi and the glowworm, missed them both. Kitchen facility is not very clean.
Review 49:Location and facility, everything you need. Heating facility for the bed, the toilet and towels.
Review 50:A larger cupboard in the bathroom to hold a toilet bag would have helped, there was room to install one. A larger sign above a switch shared with the light switch to say it operates the fridge is needed. We woke to find our supplies hadn't been refrigerated.
Review 51:Clean, comfortable and well equipped with a view to the sea and beach access
Review 52:The wifi was dreadful. Staff are aware of this, and told me a new system was about to be installed. If wifi is important to you, I would make sure the new system is in before deciding to stay at this property.
Review 53:Quiet location where you can hear the waves breaking from your chalet. Clean and well maintained. Helpful staff. Fresh milk supplied on check in.
Review 54:We had stayed here before, but had a nice side of a two-side accomodation. This time we were in the middle of three units and it was very noisy. Worst of all was the buildings location...we faced a parking lot with a horse pas sure on one side. A horse trailer blocked our view all three nights were there and there was constant foot traffic past our deck.
Review 55:Not much.
Review 56:The resort is some way from the centre of Hokitika so a car may be needed to get to shops and restaurants. We were not aware of restaurants within easy walking distance.
Review 57:Attractive beachfront log cabin type rooms. BBQ facilities.
Review 58:decking area at rear opens on to beach through small garden.sunset is mazing to watch on the beach and the glow worm dell across the road.Very clean spacious and well equipped but need transport to access Hokitika town
Review 59:Outstanding facilities and comfort. Wonderful location with lots of activities in local area to experience. We were only passing through and could not do justice to the area.
Review 60:An excellent, spacious and well-equipped cabin. Because of a small dune we could only see the tops of the waves from our balcony, but it was only a few yards to carry our glasses of wine to a driftwood log with an amazing view of miles of beach. There are no restaurants nearby, but a lovely big supermarket called 'New World' in the middle of town makes knocking up a quick meal very easy.
Review 61:There was some noise from the adjoining chalet (they are semi-detached) but this was noted by staff when we mentioned it and hopefully sorted out for future guests. Wi-fi did not reach the beachfront cabins, had to go to the office area to connect - needs a wi-fi booster
Review 62:Location a few steps from the sea and sunsets. Good washing facilities. Easy access to town, shop, things to do. Relative privacy in beachfront chalets.
Review 63:The view from the kitchen area over the beach The friendly staff The size of the accommodation The comfortable bed The large bathroom If this wasn't holiday accommodation; we could have lived there!
Review 64:The location but also the unit was perfect for our family and close to the beach. It was Christmas Day so things were very quiet around the property but we enjoyed the grounds and animals, too. Nearby glow worm dell was a plus too.
Review 65:Nothing at all will visit again for sure.
Review 66:The whole cabin (No 9) was gorgeous, very unique. So many lights inside, very clean and modern with well equipped appliances. Loft bedroom upstairs was beautiful & the sheets and bed were a joy to sleep in so comfy. Bathroom was spacious & spa bath with candles. Deck is private complex is well looked after and the farm animals are a joy to touch & see bonus for everyone. Friendly staff. The best has to be proximity to the beach to watch the beautiful sunsets. This stop made our west coast trip more memorable thank you.
Review 67:Take insect repellent for the sand flies. Unfortunately we couldn't swim in the sea as it is not safe but we walked on the beach.
Review 68:We stayed in unit 16 which was a one bedroomed apartment facing the beach. We stayed one night but could have stayed much longer as the unit was so well equipped and comfortable. It had a lovely verandah facing the beach and free very good wifi. The unit could sleep 5, though we were a couple. Check in was efficient and charming. Cooking facilities were excellent and the living room spacious. Shining Star is family orientated and has farm animals for the children and a park for RVs. We stayed on 5 January which was a busy time but we found it quiet and peaceful. We would definitely recommend Shining Star and would come here again.
Review 69:The beach-front chalets are single buildings, split into 2 chalets - which means you hear what the neighbours are doing and you smell what they're cooking - awaking to the stink of eggs frying at 6.30am is something I could have done without.
Review 70:everything you could imagine. very clean, very nice. family rooms facing the beach and ocean. and they have a goat, a horse and other animals on site. beautiful landscape.
Review 71:Expected sofa bed in living room of two bedroom apartment, but it was not a sofa bed.
Review 72:Location right on the beach. Gorgeous sunset. Glow worms right across the street.
Review 73:A bit on the small side for more than a couple of days but it was perfect for our needs
Review 74:Great value for money, perfect for walks on the beach and sitting outside when weather permits. Reception staff really pleasant
Review 75:expensive
Review 76:beach facing chalets are great and the view from from Hokitika beach is majestic if there are no or less clouds. U can see Mt Cook from there. The couch was good and so was the bed. The view from windows and gate was very pleasant. Near to town center as well
Review 77:leaving ....
Review 78:Well located, easy access to beach for long walk and accross the road the glowworm caves, even the train passes this property... got a nice blast of the horn from the traindriver...
Review 79:a bit cold for the bedroom
Review 80:- location is great, just besides main drive and 1min walk to glow-worm dell. - beach cottage- direct and easy access from front door to beach. - Tide large one-bedroom cottage with large and full kitchen. - WIFI is fast and stable.
Review 81:The first apartment we were given had an awful smell. All the windows were open on arrival yet our other apartment for our friends was fine and windows were closed. At first we were told there is nothing that could be done because they were fully booked but when I said I could not sleep in there they swapped us to another apartment.
Review 82:The location
Review 83:Couch could have been bigger and more comfy but this is minor. Wifi very on and off, but free so ok.
Review 84:Location - on the beach front. Location - 100m walk to glow-worm dell. Comfort, bed, Jacuzzi, kitchenette.
Review 85:Kitchen area is on the center of the house so when we are cooking, spread smell around.
Review 86:Easy to walk to the beach. It's a nice design of wood house.
Review 87:Nothing not too like
Review 88:Large lodge with separate and the first place with a bath. Garden opens onto beach. 2 minutes walk from the glow worm dell. Had low fat milk
Review 89:I have nothing to put here
Review 90:Location, beachfront accommodation overlooked the beach. Lovely wooden cabins, very clean and comfortable. Great to sit on decking & eat breakfast looking at the sea.
Review 91:Having to leave....
Review 92:What was there not to like. Our chalet (no.10) was truly fab, and we even had our own private walkway to the beach. Upstairs we had the bedroom level and downstairs the living/kitchen area, although not all the chalets are either so well positioned or have separate bedrooms. However, the price we paid was still very reasonable considering the facilities we had.
Review 93:A party of noisy neighbours who gathered outside our room at 6 am. for over half an hour.
Review 94:Clean and comfortable, away from main centre a bit so fairly quiet.
Review 95:In general, West Coast (SI) beaches are not suitable for swimming. However, you'll enjoy lovely walks along smooth sand and enjoy magical sunsets over the ocean.
Review 96:As a returning guest I came back for the lovely location, friendly staff, and the very clean and well appointed rooms. The location has a rural feel although it is only 2 mins from town by car, or 5 mins by bike. The location is quiet and has great range of options for all travellers. Visit the magical glow worm dell over the road after dark.
Review 97:We loved the position of the villas on the beachfront and it would have been good to stay longer and experience the views, terrace etc longer. Opposite was an area with glow worms which we could view at no charge. The reception staff were all extremely helpful and friendly.
Review 98:Absolutely nothing !!
Review 99:Cabins were immaculate, set overlooking the sea, wonderful sunset. Huge bed. Trim milk. We were able to leave our cars there while we cycled the wilderness trail. Very accommodating.
Review 100:There was nothing that could be done better.
Review 101:The site, right on the beach was excellent. An easy walk into town andjust a short drive to the spectacular Hokitika Gorge...not to be missed!
Review 102:Internet free but slow.
Review 103:The chalets are very charming, and you can walk out the door directly on the short path to the beach. Interior comfortable, more rustic than elegant. Front desk very pleasant and helpful. Glow worm dell across the street.
Review 104:Wifi was a bit slow, but there were heavy storms while we were there... and there is plenty to do other than surf the web.
Review 105:Location, cleanliness and views were all great. We only stayed for one day wish we could have stayed for more.
Review 106:Chalet was one half with a thin wall. Noisy neighbour having arguments in a foreign language late at night.
Review 107:The size and layout of the room was very good, included a desk and small dining table Comfortable bed. Washing machines and driers available for $3 each.
Review 108:We were in one of the bungalow style units down on the beach, which was great for the kids ( and nice view for the adults too!) Great kitchen facilities and bathroom. The kids also loved the glow worm dell which is right across the road
Review 109:Not enough comfy seating, just a small two seater. Even a large style two seater would make it more comfy without impeding on the limited space too much I believe ☺
Review 110:Nice log cabin motel units - lovely outlook & nice staff. Really enjoyed our stay.
Review 111:Lack of adequate heating and very limited bench space in kitchenette. Also fridge was old with poor seals and some of our food was spoiled due to being frozen on top and second shelf
Review 112:View fantastic, bed comfortable
Review 113:It's not a big issue really, as we didn't spend much time within the villa, but the kitchen, and living area were a tad small. Aside from that though, there was everything we needed there to be able to cook a dinner for the family.
Review 114:The lady at reception was extremely helpful, loved the animals, and the idea of a playground (although the weather meant we couldn't use it), the beds were comfy and heating was great!
Review 115:need more room for toiletries more guest laundry services as not enough machines
Review 116:The view from our cabin
Review 117:La situation face à la mer, le confort du chalet...
Review 118:Location, cleanliness and accommodation facilities.
Review 119:Brilliant help from staff, wonderful sea view and very handy for the town.
Review 120:Had everything we needed. Can't fault our room
Review 121:Great location, lovely beachside spot, animals, late night walk to glow worms
Review 122:Great location!
Review 123:Great Beach front cabin and very clean. Serviced very well daily. Air conditioning
Review 124:Good equipped cabins with beautiful view on the ocean.
