Reviews for Beachfront Hotel Hokitika

Review 1:Over-priced.... sub-standard...stuffy...poor ventilation...urine smelling cistern...mini basin impossible to use without splashing water onto floor...uncomfortable bed....and unbeatable bad value for money...

Review 2:we went into the restuarant for dinner and asked for a window seat so we could see the sea, there were a few but we told they were reserved. No one came in to use these tables, we found out that they had been set for breakfast, so i guess the restuarant manager couldn't be bothered to re do it. I think if you are a guest and staying the night, you should be able to sit in any table that is free, and not somewhere for the managers convenience. I found the manager surly and unfriendly. The wait young women were happy and helpful.

Review 3:the receptionists, the waiting young women, the handiness of the location.

Review 4:Stayed in 2 rooms , first room was very basic and not worth the money charged, also had big illuminated sign outside window which lit up the room, so was difficult to sleep, next night decided to upgrade rather than lose money by moving out. 2nd room was lovely but at 275.00 dollars anight for a studio was very expensive. Although it did have a lovely view

Review 5:Very poor value for money. Ensuite far too small for room - it was essentially a tiny cupboard. Depressing room. The hotel has a good position, but the room allocated did not reflect this. It was also over a bar and was very noisy.

Review 6:Loved the Beachfront, great location and beautiful room. Our first night there was a stormy night and we loved the front row seat to all the action. We highly recommend a stay here and we will definitely be back. Thank you.

Review 7:We had a room at ground level, from which you don't see the beach and sea too well - but then you can walk to the beach straight out of your room. For best views ask for a room higher up. Do note that the Tasman Sea is quite rough here and not suitable for swimming.

Review 8:You can see and hear the Tasman Sea from your room. The room was spacious and clean, staff really friendly. From the hotel restaurant incredible views too, especially the sunset is not to be missed. City centre is short walking distance away.

Review 9:No view of the beach, not enough chairs in the room, no desk, in need of decoration. No air conditioning and some of the light switches need fixing.

Review 10:Not a lot.

Review 11:The free upgrade considering the room was available (all hotels should do this!) This brings people back. Spacious rooms, great facilities just needed Soho and sky movies for the ultimate experience ;)

Review 12:When we checked in, Reception told us town was full and eating places would be full, therefore should book into their restaurant. Then said we would have to eat at 5.30 as restaurant was busy. None of this was true. When we got to restaurant at 5.30, the kitchen wasn't even open and we had long delays waiting for our food. At no point more that one quarter full. Food was ok but we felt conned. So don't believe what reception tells you! However, room and view were great.

Review 13:Lovely comfortable room with great view of beach and sea.

Review 14:Only thing was that our room did not have air con very hot one night we were there

Review 15:The extra friendly staff at the front desk, in the restaurant and even the cleaning staff. Superb! Great location. Food at the restaurant was tops!

Review 16:Overpriced!!! We got a back bedroom in the older part of the complex, without beach views etc., for $190 and based on other places we have stayed it shouldn't have been any more than $100. The restaurant looked lovely but also pricey. Not really worth going to the bar for a meal - try elsewhere!

Review 17:The location was great, right on the beach and in town.

Review 18:We had a deluxe room with balcony which was spacious clean and comfortable. The bed was big and really comfy (firm). The view over the beach and sunsets in evening were amazing and relaxing. We also had breakfast included in booking price which was great and set us up for the day.

Review 19:The hotel room was as bare bones as it could be, really small and definitely not worth the price. Also, breakfast $18 for hot or cold(read: cereal, yogurt and fruit) was an absolute rip off! A 2 star hotel at the most for a 4star price tag...

Review 20:The accommodating staff, very polite and efficient.

Review 21:when booking the new modern wing of the hotel was advertised and i had booked the room as shown in the booking form. on arrival we had a room in the very old part of the hotel, hardly any see view and the overall furnishing, bath room appliances were rather of a 2 star hotel. False pretence.

Review 22:location near the beach.

Review 23:False advertising. It was more of a motel than a hotel. Restaurant and rooms out dated. Bad service receptionist was rude lied when asked to upgrade. Blown light bulbs, little bathroom, smoke drifted into room from downstairs through the window, walls paper thin can here everything in the room next door.

Review 24:Nothing, false advertising. It was more of a motel than a hotel.

Review 25:Kettle not in convenient place to use - had to move the bed out to plug in. The bedside lamp plug kept falling out of wall. The bathroom door wouldn't slide open and shut, toilet cistern detached from the wall.

Review 26:Staff were accommodating especially since we arrived so late in the day.

Review 27:While there is a new wing, the "wing" I was in was very run down and had some of the worst facilities I have seen in a New Zealand hotel/motel in the last five years. I would not stay there again.

Review 28:The hotel is close to the beach and walking distance to town.

Review 29:Damp small on entering the bottom storey.

Review 30:staff very friendly and approachable. They decorated a birthday cake when asked and happy to help. Wonderful view, bright rooms and very comfortable bed.

Review 31:The room was comfortable and clean. Bathroom heating and layout was good. The hotel restaurant serves very good food. The bar area with pool table was a plus.

Review 32:Our original room was a standard 3 bed room directly over the bar. The noise was considerable due to locals celebrating the first night of the new Bond film. When we were told this could go on into the early hours we asked for a move and this was done immediately.

Review 33:Everything in the superior room we were moved to. The staff were wonderful at dealing with a problem. The superior room could have been in a different hotel as far as view, quality of furnishings, furniture, facilities etc. Dont go for the standard room if possible!

Review 34:The Driftwood Wing where we stayed is very old, tired and desperately in need of refurbishment. There was also poor staff communication when it came to settling the bill. Think we overpaid for what we got.

Review 35:The location is lovely - right on the beach. Nice if you are lucky enough to get a beachfront view.

Review 36:View of city was disappointing. I think the hotel could be clearer about the views that its standard rooms have at the time of booking

Review 37:Nice new room and bathroom, good size. Good breakfast

Review 38:The room was very dated and bed was too soft but it was clean. I think we were in the old part of the hotel which is over a casino. There was some noise from drunk people below our window.

Review 39:Location and restaurant was accommodating with our late arrival. Front desk staff was very friendly.

Review 40:Our children stayed in the old section, the rooms in this section need to improve or renovate the bathrooms.

Review 41:Our room overlooking the beach was very good. The sunset and the moonset over the water were wonderful.

Review 42:Downstairs near reception was very fishy smelling, not nice. Reception lady not very welcoming.

Review 43:Our quiet room was fabulous, good size, great views of beach-loved the glass balustrade. Bed & linen were great, bathroom with floor heating-fabulous! Lighting was great too. Really enjoyed our stay again & look forward to returning some day!

Review 44:The photo on website is deceptive as it shows a modern block with sea views. We were placed in old hotel room albeit renovated. The price was more than any other nightly accommodation for a week on the west coast, plus they wanted to charge $10 more than on "booking" website.

Review 45:Location

Review 46:Didn't like your streaky bacon would have preferred back bacon with less fat but that is a matter of personal preference.

Review 47:A very quiet hotel ideally situated on the sea front. Excellent view of the sea from our balcony.

Review 48:some warning would of been nice because we didn't get much sleep on Friday or Saturday night due to being above the bar. (The music and the court yard area just below) The level of noise was disappointing.

Review 49:The hotel was great value for money seeing as we got a good deal. The members of staff we dealt with were excellent though.

Review 50:On the booking site it showed the beach side apartment but when we got there they wore all booked out and wore put in one of the back apartments this is miss leading

Review 51:The free breakfast we got after our room wasn't clean and got moved

Review 52:Staff somewhat off hand..not really engaged No Sport on Television Lift a bit dodgy

Review 53:View of the sea (must be upstairs) proximity to the beach Noise of the crashing surf heavy rain heated floor in the bathroom

Review 54:Minor details: 1. Old wine (?) stain on the beautiful bedside chair. Chair needs to be recovered. 2. One frayed hand towel. Towel needs to be used as a duster.

Review 55:View, room, bed, bathroom, staff and food. Actually I loved everything about it and will definitely stay there again.

Review 56:The beds and pillows could have been a bit softer.

Review 57:Very close to the airport and the beach location is beautiful. The dinner we had that evening was great and we even were given complimentary desserts which were fantastic.

Review 58:We booked this hotel as it looked like a new modern hotel. When we arrived we discovered it was not. The hotel has a new block which is what is seen in the pictures which looks very nice. However the standard rooms are in a very old run down block at the back. They are badly in need of a refurb. We questioned this with reception and were told we could upgraded if we paid. So if your thinking of booking here don't book the cheap rooms as they are not the rooms in the pictures

Review 59:Quick wifi and good location

Review 60:Fantastic location. Great view of the beach. Room was clean tidy and modern. Our room was warm on arrival including heated tiles in bathroom. A quiet and comfortable room.

Review 61:Was disappointed there was no Sky and was on the night of a All Black test match, was told we could watch the test in the bar but hardly appropriate with a 3 week old baby. Was also disappointed with the quality of the Food considering the prices were aligned with an expensive restaurant that you would expect to get what you pay for.

Review 62:Fantastic views, very friendly and helpful staff, was upgraded at no cost due to having a new born baby which the staff member on thought we would enjoy the spa bath to relax, we alsoj took full advantage of the room service.

Review 63:Noise of pub goers right outside our window, it didn't stop til around 1am. If you need your sleep I'd recommend a quiet room back from the main road. A bit of customer service training might help the breakfast staff make you feel welcome!

Review 64:The bed and bedding was nice. Room was nice and warm!

Review 65:Strange to walk outside and then back inside to get to your room! Ate next door at bar on main road, fish very old tough and uneatable staff response very poor.

Review 66:I loved listening and seeing the ocean. Underfloor heating in the bathroom wonderful and the room was warm on arrival a great welcome to a warm room.

Review 67:Continental breakfast we thought was a bit pricey for what you got.

Review 68:We stayed in Annie Room, which was furnished with antiques. Lovely bathroom! Well restored hotel.

Review 69:No liquor licence, no sky TV. This is not 4 star accommodation. When booking through - booking.com - these issues were not listed!

Review 70:Friendly and helpful staff. Clean and tidy with comfortable chairs in unit.

Review 71:We had seawiev room and it was perfect!! I couldn't believe how close the sea actually was, the pictures what i saw before our trip really didn't do any any justice. The staff was very friendly

Review 72:We had a room in the old section - It was very disappointing. We did not know there was an old section when we booked or we may have taken up other opportunities elsewhere.

Review 73:The motel was on the beach.

Review 74:Our bathroom window opened into the hallway so that light was a bit of a mission trying to sleep without completely closing the door and removing some of the airflow in the room

Review 75:location- town/beach on our door step. Got a great view of the sunset That bed was so comfortable! Clean and ridiculously sleek

Review 76:The standard room didn't match all the flash pictures we saw when we booked. But I told Jasmin we weren't happy with the room and she upgraded us for 20 bucks.

Review 77:The walk in shower With underfloor heating

Review 78:Loved the location and views. Having the heating going in the room when you walk in was so good. Very cold at the mo. Friendly staff. Great facilities and plenty of room. Best in Hokitika

Review 79:With heater, room was warm enough but an electric blanket would have been nice to come back to after a cold evening out.

Review 80:Room and view (top floor overlooking the sea).

Review 81:The hotel promotes a see view we paid for a premium room and it was in an alley way with a bar next door. Really affected our sleep. Service was average had to consistently wait for service at front desk even when no else was there . Over promised and under delivered

Review 82:Hokitika

Review 83:The photographic advertisements give no hint of the inferior nature of the accommodation we'd booked. We were so disappointed! The soap dish was dirty & a teaspoon & saucer were dirty also. Please give a more honest indication of your accommodation in future.

Review 84:The dining area had a great outlook. The food was excellent!!! (Wedding reception) The staff were very helpful & friendly-a lovely evening indeed.

Review 85:No cover-way between the office & dinning room and the hotel rooms. It was torrential rain when we arrived and having to run in the rain between the office and dining room & bar was wet and annoying. Same thing for finer and breakfast.

Review 86:Good size room, bed, sea view, real friendly staff and a great diner no breakfast. We would return.

Review 87:Transition from reception convoluted. Room system numbering very poor. Would have expected 418 to be on the 4th floor as happens n all other institutions.

Review 88:the ocean view is actually right onto a public carpark - a little disconcerting when you have a ground floor room. Definitely go out to eat, as while the food is fine, it's nothing special!

Review 89:large room, comfortable bed, heated bathroom floor was a nice touch!

Review 90:The beachfront Hotel was amazing! the room was very reasonably priced and we got breakfast with it, the room was very clean, warm, nicely furnished, had a great view and even had a very modern ensuite with a spa bath. The staff were all incredibly pleasant and it was in a great location, being able to walk around the streets easily and look at the shops. A definite winner in our opinions and we will definitely stay here again if we can find an excuse to come back to hokitika

Review 91:The lift was a pain, it would not work for us to go up but would work to go down, tricky when you have suitcases.

Review 92:Loved the view, the location, the staff and the dinner.

Review 93:2 things. We found the pillows were all hard and quite thick. It would be nice to have a variety to choose from 2. Please inform guests if they have paid for things as part of their booking. We had included breakfast in our booking, but had booked 2 months previous so didn't realise we had paid for it untill we checked out.

Review 94:Our room was lovely. The staff were friendly and helpful

Review 95:We had asked for an upper floor in the hotel and were given a ground floor room. The bathroom in the room had a handicapped shower unit which made for trickey showering. Water would go everywhere soaking all the floor.

Review 96:Loved being by the sea and the sunsets are sublime.

Review 97:Noisey, thin walls in our accommodation block. Worth paying extra for sea views which you get from the more modern, sound proofed block.

Review 98:Good central location near the beach.

Review 99:Nothing

Review 100:Spacious room overlooking the beach with a large glass balcony. The restaurant was very good for both breakfast and an evening meal. This was just a stop over for us and exceeded our expectations. There were some amazing drift wood sculptures on the beach, well worth a look. Quite a sleepy town.

Review 101:Was placed in a room in old building next door to the one shown even though we booked 4 months in advance. Room was uncomfortable with no air conditioning & no fly screens on windows so had choice of sweltering or putting up with insects all night.

Review 102:The only thing to like was the location.

Review 103:Travelled for 6 hours thinking it was going to be on the beachfront only to find that we were put in the driftwood rooms. Right above the pub which didn't close till 2am and the lights outside shone right through the window. The room was small and old bathroom was not clean. Was booked for 2 nights but checked out after 1. Bed was hard a a rock would have been more comfy on the floor if we could have got to sleep to begin with all the noise from the pub

Review 104:The staff were great

Review 105:Staff in dining room need better training My friends and I received our meal but my Wife waited 3/4 hr. then told what she had ordered was NOT available VERY ANNOYED

Review 106:the position in Hokitika view out to sea The layout of the room

Review 107:From arrival we were made to feel very welcomed . The room was very spacious, with beach front views . Bathroom was top notch.. Huge walk in shower . The quality of the food in the restaurant was excellent .would definitely recommend .

Review 108:beachfront location photos lead to an expectation of modern comfort. We arrived to a room at the back of the old building with dirty old Lino in a tiny cupboard of a bathroom and a hand basin so tiny you could hardly wash your hands. The bed was old as were the bed coverings and furniture very hot overlooking a service area.

Review 109:location by the beach

Review 110:Hotel would have seemed better if there was anything to do in this place! In comparison to other hotels we stayed in, in New Zealand this was by far the poorest

Review 111:The picture shows a very modern building facing the sea and I'd hazard a guess that these rooms are great. We booked late and our room was in an older block. The room was small, the ensuite so tiny that the washbasin was minuscule, the wifi was intermittent ... It was ok for one night.

Review 112:The location - as the name says, right by the beach.

Review 113:bathroom was a bit small

Review 114:When I arrived quite late, the lovely lady at reception asked if I had eaten and suggested I go eat first before the restaurants stopped serving food, even before heading to the room. Then I left my Kindle in the bed when I checked out and only discovered it much later that day. I called them and they said they had found it and had tried to email me. I picked it up the next day. So a big thank you!

Review 115:Small bathroom, though adequate Room aspect...a wall! Lengthy wait for service in restaurant

Review 116:Friendly staff Deck overlooking the beach Central location Comfortable room

Review 117:Very welcoming staff, asked for an upstairs room for the view and this was given. Big comfy bed, nice bed linen. If you want the restaurant you need to book it in advance as it was full the night we were there. Very few places to eat in Hokitika

Review 118:The restaurant was one of the best we experienced for our two week New Zealand vacation. I would like to have stayed longer at Hokitika and spent more time at this hotel

Review 119:Too Too hot in room. And no way of cooling except opening window. Only problem was the curtains were of best quality thickness and the fresh air could not come through unless you opened them...and outside was the courtyard with people sitting...

Review 120:The location to the beach and town was fantastic.

Review 121:To sit outside and be embraced by The Great Ocean merely meters away enjoying an evening libation with special friends....this place is location, location, location and incredible value for money!!!

Review 122:The room in the old part of the hotel was very shabby with a small ensuite and a tiny basin. In fact, although there was a jug provided for tea/coffee, the basin was so small you couldn't fill it apart from transferring water using a cup. Then there was nowhere to plug the jug in apart from turning the small fridge off and using its extension cord. Oh and the latch on the window leading to the fire escape was broken, so the room was insecure . We had 5 great nights on the coast - this was the dearest accommodation and by far the poorest value for money.

Review 123:The location was excellent. The restaurant had a great outlook over the beach with wonderful views of the sunset. The food was very good, though the staff (possibly because they were busy) were inattentive - no one approached us again after the food was served.

Review 124:The rooms were bad, the ensuite was so small you could not move. It wasn't spotless. The dining room looked as if it was in a backpackers hotel, dirty chairs, seats all marked as was the carpet and as for the breakfast, dried out food, appalling!

Review 125:Poor ventilation in room. Wash facilities below average for cost. Hand basin in shower too small and too cramped.

Review 126:Staff very friendly courteous and efficient. Evening meal excellent.

Review 127:We were at the back of the hotel right above a noisy bar (not the new part that all the photos are of). We stayed 2 nights there and 2 nights at a motel not far away and for the same money the motel was much better value. We should have paid more to be in the more modern part of the hotel.

Review 128:Location - right next to the beach

Review 129:Good location and helpful staff. Had a very long wait for the evening meal in the restaurant for the food after ordering, which let it down. Breakfast served cold eggs which should have been warm. Kitchen needs a shake-up.

Review 130:Wifi was very patchy. Balcony outside our room appeared to be used by everyone ! No privacy ! Needs double glazing and air con

Review 131:Proximity to beach and town

The Fine Print
