Reviews for Kawaguchiko Hotel
Review 1:The hotel is run down and cold at that time of year. Most rooms & amenities listed were closed off and space heaters used, not fireplaces. They like you to leave the key @ the front desk each time you leave the hotel. The courtesy bus only runs at check in and check out times.
Review 2:The location & huge traditional breakfast were by far the best things about the hotel. The onsen was also traditional and a pleasure to soak in. The staff were mostly friendly, especially the one younger man on the desk & behind the bar.
Review 3:Switch over to Jap room after first nite. Hot water temp in room shower& Onsen shower are inconsistent especially in the morning. Can be cold at times. Onsen views is a hype are the steam fogged up the window glass & u don't really see much in the night. Non-Jap style room are filthy & crammed for family. Far from amenities if u do not drive. Foods can be a problem. Hotel staffs command of English no so good. Hotel needs some upgrades & cleanup & it will be a superb place again.
Review 4:Nice lake view and comfortable lobby area. If u drive, accessibility to other places of interest is good. A small common kitchen to cook & microwave simple meals. Japanese room are more comfortable for family with children & better in a lot aspects than non-Jap rooms. Though slightly higher rate, it is worth it. Staffs are friendly but do not understand English very well.
Review 5:There was an odd smell within the hotel, however, it was not much of a concern. Pillows were a little uncomfortable but overall everything was pleasant.
Review 6:The staffs were absolutely lovely from the second we arrived at the hotel. The location was perfect for a value of two nights and ideal for local walks around the lake, view of Mt Fuji and visits to attractions in Kawaguchiko. The hotel facilities were great epescially the hot spring! There were also free transport from the hotel to the station when checked out which was absolutely convenient. Rooms were great size, however pillows were a bit uncomfortable. Yet what you pay is what you get but still absolutely amazing. Thanks!
Review 7:stayed during winter, the heater didn't really work. it was freezing in my room! and there is no wifi too in the room. only in lobby. the staff couldn't speak english, but they tried hard to help us with anything! :)
Review 8:the onsen facing mt. fuji was really nice! comfy beds. hotel is quite old, but it is fine! better than what we expected after reading people's review.
Review 9:Not all the rooms in the hotel have view of Mount Fuji (although the website stated that all room features the view).
Review 10:The location of the hotel is just beside Lake Kawaguchiko. The hotel can also be reached by walking from Kawaguchiko station. The hotel is close to restaurants and the Kachi Kachi ropeway. The breakfast provided is good.
Review 11:the building is quite old and is in need of some repairing and updates -- has a musty smell, not good for people with allergies to mold
Review 12:beautiful Ryokan lodge with onsen lovely view from our room of the lake across the street easy access to town by walking, and access to buses, and biking around the lakes, etc. staff very nice and helpful, would be even more helpful if they spoke English but I understand we were in THEIR country and it is not a requirement to have English speaking staff all in all a delighful place to stay and we would stay there again reasonable price breakfast expensive so we ate out
Review 13:Pillows were uncomfortable. Bar was never open.
Review 14:Location was great. Service was good. Lift to trains. Onsen was great. My view from my bedroom window was off Mt Fuji ?
Review 15:Some of the facilities were quite old. Wifi didn't work in the rooms, only in the lobby and another minor inconvenience was that the restaurant had to be booked a day in advance
Review 16:Friendly staff always eager to help and give advice for example on how to best travel to surrounding areas or possible dining places in the area
Review 17:The cottage was big, great tv, heater , well equipped kitchen, but not as clean as you would like. Desperately needs refurbishing. That sentiment goes for the whole hotel, faded grandeur has gone a bit far
Review 18:The staff were very helpful and friendly. The breakfast was fantastic, by far the best I have had in a hotel in Japan (I have had many). Female onsen good.
Review 19:The hotel has seen better days in terms of the lobby, general hotel surroundings as well as the room - although it may be value for money (not sure, since I've not stayed at other hotels)
Review 20:Location was good. Reasonably close to the station, and by the lake. Room had a view of Mt.Fuji. Staff are nice & friendly.
Review 21:This place has great potential, however if refurbished we probably could not afford to stay. The French school group spoilt our stay with noise and disrespect for the onsen.
Review 22:Right on the Lake and we had wonderful views of Mt Fuji from our bed. Host will pick up from station ask tourist desk to ring. We did not eat at hotel. Not much open near the lake at night need eat early up near station as everything closes early. The onsen great, with views of Mt Fuji and Lake.
Review 23:The hotel is old and in need of some renovation. The staff didn't speak much English.
Review 24:I had a side view of Mt. Fuji from my room which was quite cool. Some rooms have lake views. It's very convenient to train/bus station. There's self-service laundry for washing clothes.
Review 25:Friendly staff very helpful. Great character of hotel. Having the best breakfast of our trip watching the heron dive for theirs in the lake. Seeing Mount Fuji from our room.
Review 26:Way overpriced for what the hotel is. We paid $440 for 2 nights. Dusty dusty room, smelt like smoke even though hotel says ' no smoking'. Rooms very old and out dated, air con was playing up so very stuffy. When booked was told would come with a mountain view, when we arrived they said mountain views were only for Japanese style rooms. Zero negotiation with the staff about this. No wifi in rooms and pretty terrible connection in lounge.
Review 27:Onsen was good and breakfast was extremely good. Very big serving.
Review 28:The room was grotty needs so cleaning old dirty carpets, mold every where the character of the place is amazing would be a top hotel if they did some major repairs to it. no view of the lake or Mt Fuji as promised in booking form.
Review 29:The character of the old part of the hotel, hotel is in a beautiful setting but needs major work.
Review 30:The hotel is old, a bit dirty and smelly. Its not terrible, but considering the price it should be a lot better. With a good refurb, it would be super. Good for 1 or 2 nights though, good location
Review 31:Staff super helpfull, kind and honest!
Review 32:The onsen on the top floor of the hotel offers breathtaking views of Mt Fuji, cloud cover allowing, and the lake. Rooms were old style, a little tired but charming enough. Full Japanese breakfast was an amazing experience, served by a wonderful hostess in the dining room that time forgot!
Review 33:My mother said the hotel had this old smell; I couldn't smell it but I do think it is in need of a renovation - at least the carpet and the walls.
Review 34:Japanese-style room was definitely worth it. My father was amused by the ladies who made the futon beds. Staff was excellent and very kind. I just loved the 'library'-looking area which had all these travelling brochures and fliers.
Review 35:The beds are old and saggy. Distance of hotel too far from town, accessibility is poor. Toilet in poor condition.
Review 36:Hotel looks alright from the outside. The view of the lake from hotel is great. View of lake from onsen is good.
Review 37:The whole building is old, a bit abandoned. Carpets are super dirty on the common areas, thanks god the room was clean. The receptionist wasn't very helpful and they on,y take cash.
Review 38:The hotel was in front of the lake, it had a nice bath. One member of the staff was very kind and drove us to the station after 10am
Review 39:This hotel was amazing! You really get a taste of the japanese culture. They were very polite, view was amazing! I couldn't believe the price for how close it is to the station. We will be staying again!
Review 40:Our western style room was dirty and the carpets have stains all over them. And the curtains were shredding from cigarette burns (for a nonsmoking room it had a hint of smoke smell) The Japanese style rooms were better but we got bit up by either bed bugs or mosquitoes all night
Review 41:The staff was very nice and attentive. The breakfast crew was great and the food was too. They had a variety of local cuisines to try each morning and the views were beautiful.
Review 42:Room was a bit bleak, whole hotel covered with cobwebs, very old in need of some TLC. WiFi only in the lobby. Onsen needed a good clean, windows were very dirty making the view a bit dismal. Staff were pleasant and gave us a lift to the station, despite speaking little English.
Review 43:Location is good, good view over the lake
Review 44:The hotel needs a facelift. The common areas have a mouldy smell and some of the wallpapers are peeling off. The outside of the hotel looks better than the inside. Its a pity..this hotel has so much potential.
Review 45:It is about 10-15 min walk from the Kawaguchiko Station. The hotel is right next to Lake Kawaguchi and a 5 min walk to Oike Park where you will have a pretty nice view of Fuji-san. The room was clean, futon was comfortable and breakfast was awesome.
Review 46:Rooms were smoking rooms, and the bed was a bit old.
Review 47:Very friendly and helpful staff really made the place. Onsen was really pleasant, and the hotel made it available 24 hours, even getting it ready for us at 23:00.
Review 48:The WiFi was only accessible from the lobby. This wasn't an issue as the staff were happy for us to sit in the lobby and socialize but it would be more convenient if it were available throughout.
Review 49:The location was amazing and close to everything that we needed. The staff were very willing to help and offered to drive us to the station at the end of our stay - super helpful as a group of girls always seem to over pack! They even took our photo for us :D
Review 50:Place has been rather run down. It has the potential to be a really nice hotel. Most of the furnishing probably dates from the 70s. It seemed like the Japanese traditional style rooms were in better shape than the Western style ones.
Review 51:Centrally located hotel by the lake.
Review 52:The room smelt and was very stuffy. The shower curtain had some mould and the bed had some hairs on it. No soap to wash hands, very very dated with wallpaper peeling etc. there is wifi but only in the lobby. Very expensive hotel, and would expect much more for the price.
Review 53:Location was idyllic and the staff were very helpful, they also have a free shuttle bus to and from the station (mornings)
Review 54:Worst hotel ever visited on last years. Very dirty excepted linens which were Okay. Hotel facilities are at least 50 years old without any renovation. Hard time to understand rate given by previous customers ; not common to see such bad quality hotel.
Review 55:Nothing. It was a disaster. We tried to find an alternative hotel not to stay at this one so dirty and from last century installation.
Review 56:The rooms are very old and dilapidated:( You can smell the scent of old furnitures. If they can just little pay attention then this place can turn to a liveable hotel.
Review 57:really friendly staff and nice location near the lake side.
Review 58:It's a good place to stay. We booked japanese style room and it was very comfortable. 5-10 minutes walk to shops and cafes, 2 minutes walk to Kawaguchiko lake. Staff were very helpful and even gave us a ride to the station after we checked out.
Review 59:No restaurant in the hotel in the evening when we wanted. Need reservation in advance.
Review 60:The view on the lake is beautiful. The staff are really helpful.
Review 61:Pillows are Japanese style and quite hard.
Review 62:Overlooks the lake, has a good Japanese bath and Japanese breakfast. Great for Mt Fuji. bicycles available. Staff speak a little bit of English.
Review 63:Pictures supplied by Booking.com showed the old part of the hotel, only. Most/all of the rooms were in the more modern annex.
Review 64:After some complaints about having to change rooms ( due to air-con fault) and some minor cleanliness issues, the manager did refund our breakfast costs.
Review 65:1. The public corridor's carpet really needs to change. It is quite stinky. 2. So many steps to the bathroom.
Review 66:Japanese style guest room is very specious. It is very clean inside of the room. Breakfast is good. View is good. Service is good.
Review 67:Whilst the bathroom was very clean the rest of the room could have done with a good dusting. The hotel could do with a facelift in general.
Review 68:Beautiful views of Lake Kawaguchiko and Mount Fuji from our Japanese style room.
Review 69:the place was very old, and smelled bad! the wallpaper is peeling off the walls, as well as being stained...as are the carpets. Smoking in the hallways is allowed and the level we were on (2) stank badly of cooking wafting from the kitchen on the other side of the hallway. When windows were opened a ton of mosquitoes took over the room... booking states mountain and lake views from the room but it either mountain views from a western style room or lake view from the japanese style rooms...
Review 70:location is the only thing this place has going for it, but given the size of the area, it was not at all worth the extra money; could've stayed at a hostel that looked the same inside and would have been a 7 minute walk from the lake...and still had mountain views!
Review 71:An older style hotel with lots of charm and a large bedroom. Very friendly and helpful staff. When we asked the concierge to call us a taxi, he promptly offerred us a list to the train station. The public baths have a lovely view of my Fuji.
Review 72:It's a bit run down and old but a solid value for what we paid
Review 73:Staff is super friendly and willing to help out in any way. Very Mellow vibe and a relaxing stay after the hustle of the city.
Review 74:There was no heating, the placed smelled to decay, no wifi on the room, no payment by creditcard possible.
Review 75:The lake in front of the hotel is beautifull, the price was not so high.
Review 76:The furniture in the room should be renovate because it is too old. The other is ok.
Review 77:I like the location of the hotel. We can see Mt. Fuji, it is very beautiful . This hotel are very clean . The warm reception. I think that we will go back again.
Review 78:No wifi in the room.
Review 79:It's conveniently located for Fuji Shibazakura Fastival. Breakfast was excellent. Thank you for making our beds (futon beds were comfortable to sleep but we'd have had no idea how to prepare them)!
Review 80:Spacious en-suite bedrooms with king size beds, Large living/dining room with fire place, Free WiFi, Rental Bicycles, Washing Machines & Dryers, 4th floor On-Sen with commanding view of surroundings, well tendered garden.
Review 81:This is an older hotel that on first glance, looked like it would have a lot of charm- if it was properly taken care of. The hotel is very poorly maintained- carpets covered in numerous huge stains, peeling wallpaper and a thick layer of grime on the walls. When we pulled back the covers on our beds, there were hairs on the sheets in one bed, and some "mystery" pieces of dirt in the other bed. We asked to switch rooms, but every one we were shown was just as filthy as the first room. We eventually settled on a Japanese style room which was a bit nicer, but we were still wishing we could change hotels without losing our money. There is no WiFi in the rooms, only in the lobby. That would be fine, if the lobby had heat! At night, there were groups of people bundled up, huddling around the single, small space heater trying to keep warm while using the WiFi (it was snowing when we were there). This could be a very nice hotel if it was renovated. We just got the feeling that the owners don't care enough about the hotel to invest in cleaning/fixing it up.
Review 82:Good location right on Kawaguchiko Lake and a short walk to shops and restaurants.
Review 83:It would have been nice if they served western breakfast as well .
Review 84:The hotel was descent enough for a relaxing stay after sightseeing in Kawaguchiko. Location is excellent and its a new experience to stay in one of the oldest hotel in Kawaguchiko. The Antique theme goes very well in the lobby decor and gives it s classy look! Tip : There's a great Italian restaurant by 2 min walk in case you don't opt for Japanese food.
Review 85:Totally rundown hotel. Filthy carpets peeling ceilings, extremely noisy heating.
Review 86:The price, but it was still way too expensive for the quality offered. Free transfer to the station.
Review 87:The rooms are great, but everything else (lobby, hotel bar, breakfast room) are old and sometimes dirty and neglected. If they cleaned the windows, carpets and furniture, and gave the place some fresh paint, it would be a perfect old Japanese style grand hotel...
Review 88:Traditional Japanese rooms, very big, en suite bathroom, nice view; very nice old hotel; perfect traditional breakfast, close to the lake, the train station and for trips to Mt. Fuji.
Review 89:It's really run down and you also have to go to the lobby for the free wifi
Review 90:the bath house was really good and the pool table room. We stayed in the Japanese style room it was big and plenty of room
Review 91:The 10am check-out was a little too early, 11am would be better.
Review 92:The traditional Japanese small hotel is what drew me and the On-sen bath was delightful with a view of Mt Fuji to boot. The staff took care of our luggage before check-in and after check out.
Review 93:no restaurant open around the hotel at night
Review 94:its only have wifi in the lobby, but its good enough. have a public bath tub with pretty view from the window
Review 95:We had booked to stay for four days, but left after less than 24 hours. The room was not clean and smelled bad. The bathroom had clearly not been cleaned in some time - it had previous guests hair in the bath and on the floor. There was a layer of dust on all surfaces. The bathroom smelled really damp and mouldy. I didn't want to use the shower at all. I asked the cleaner to clean the bathroom, explaining it was evry dirty as we found it, and she just flushed the toilet and walked out. The fridge in the room was older than me and made a lot of noise, it was also very dirty inside and smelled very bad. When we said we were checking out early they were not very interested in why.
Review 96:The man at the front desk was not rude and the location was quite good. The sheets on the bed were clean.
Review 97:Wifi wasn't great.
Review 98:Loved the staff, great 1940s bar, the traditional japanese room was fantastic with a view of the lake and walking distance to dinner and the rope way.
Review 99:The price of the room was what you would pay for a 4-5* hotel in a city but the carpet at the room was dirty with stains and old smell, it's suppose to be an onsen meaning that it has hot springs vut what we
Review 100:The stuff were pretty kind
Review 101:Hotel feels a bit run down and past it's prime. Lots of minor damage throughout hotel, stained carpets, ripped paper screens, chipped furniture, mouldy and damaged roof in onsen. Onsen does have mt Fuji views but the filthy windows spoil the view.
Review 102:Hotel is in a good location next to the lake. Room was large and comfortable.
Review 103:Reception counter staff very rude, no wifi in the room even the lobby wifi also got problem. No air-con in the room. Room dirty. Price unvalueable for this hotel.
Review 104:Just only location acceptable.
Review 105:The hotel itself is very outdated. The furniture and decor are in needof an update. The free wi-fi is only available in the lobby. Unfortunately, the lobby is FREEZING cold in the winter (i.e. I can see my breath). I needed to sit directly beside one of the gas heaters in order to use the internet.
Review 106:The location of the hotel is good, it's right on the lake. The top floor has a bath house with the most beautiful view of Mt. Fuji and the lake. Honestly, this was the best part of the hotel. The staff is friendly. They'll even drive you to the train station.
Review 107:The place is like 100 years old, and you can tell. some paces look very old.my room was under the Onsen and you could tell the roof was replaced. There was small holes near the floor boards...mice? never saw them. I left a cookie on purpose, never disappeared. the room was cold, So I manually had to lift the wall cover and open a water valve to make more hot water flow trough the heater. The hot water was also not so hot. There is lack of lights in the room. The halls are cold, the Onsen change room was about 5C in the winter, and the onsen was also cold as hell sometimes with the breeze. This place needs renovation.
Review 108:The traditional room looked pretty nice. the beds where pretty and the table was also nice. I could have tea by the window and see the lake view. The Japanese style dinner was worth the 50$, a full banquet with all the dishes, and fresh items with exquisite flavors. Location is great, quiet and beautiful year around.
Review 109:This hotel is located close to Kawaguchiko station by about 10 mins walk. Our room has a great view of beautiful lake. Staffs are very nice. It is worth staying at Kawaguchiko hotel.
Review 110:We had a problem finding the hotel. When we finally did, we couldnt check in until its 3pm. (we found the hotel at 2.20pm). Not much facilities and they were quite run down. There are no towels or toiletries in the rooms so please bring your own if you are going to stay there. It's not exactly near the bus/train station.
Review 111:The elderly staff at the reception was warm and caring. My shoes gave way and they tried to find a pair for me (among their staff). But the shoes were too big.
Review 112:Place is starting to get bit old and needs a renovation. We stayed Friday night and told bar wasn't open Friday and couldn't have dinner because we didn't book in advance? No problem around the corner is hotel 5min walking served Western food, was great.
Review 113:Staff are super friendly and helpful, even got a free shuttle bus from hotel to train station. Definitely have the breakfast, Japanese style which was fantastic and huge meal. Kept on coming. Lake side you get a nice view of the lake, or the other side Mt Fuji. But it is an old hotel and is getting to show its age in need of a refurbishment.
Review 114:The hotel is clean but shabby looking. There was a strong smell of kerosene right through the lobby and corridors. It was even in the rooms. And when we opened the windows for fresh air, there were no insect screens so we got mosquitos inside and got bitten.
Review 115:Good location with pleasant view of the lake and occasional views of Mount Fuji.
Review 116:The strong kerosene smell of the heaters when outside the room.
Review 117:We chose this hotel out of consideration of budget. For what we paid,we were pleasantly surprised with the size of the ryokan room, as wellas the furnishings. While the room looked dated, it had a nice oldfeel, much like a log cabin interior. Think dim lighting and shojiscreens. The top floor onsen is also large and roomy. Because we stayedin the corner unit, we also had a slight glimpse of Mt Fuji from theroom windows.
Review 118:Payment: pls be forewarned that if reservation is made by booking.com, the payment is by CASH only ! we were not warned and was even reassured by the front desk that payment by credit cArd was possible. Cleanliness: substandard maintenance of all facilities including room- carpet moldy, furniture old and rotten around the corners, fridge old/leaky, air-conditioning machine is a portable one that appears to have been placed on the floor for many years, taps leaking throughout the night..Awful fumigation odor throughout stay. communal bath was poorly maintained- old hair clogging drain, cobwebs on the light fixtures, wallpaper peeling off... room toilets were dimly lit without bidet , whereas the public use (incl staff) toilet on the ground floor was newly furnished and looked like what a room toilet should be like! the hotel would have been a lovely experience if only it were much better maintained !
Review 119:elderly gentleman was friendly, greeted us every morning, offered us photo taking in front of hotel. the communal bath has a decent view of the lake / mt fuji (depending on which gender bath). old-fashioned look to the hotel potentially nostalgic..
Review 120:Wi-fi only available in the lobby. Shabby fixtures - crack in wash basin, hole in bed sheet and scruffy decor. Cold in public areas downstairs. Negative first impressions did not last the full stay - sunshine softened initial disappointment. Sadly this hotel can't maintain its 1930's status!
Review 121:Excellent traditional Japanese breakfasts, stunning views of the lake and Mt Fuji - especially when relaxing in the onsen. Onsen was excellent.
Review 122:In severe need of refurbishment; rooms very old (dodgy slightly peeling wallpaper, broken looking heater/aircon), mosquito issue in room. Town had a run down feel, very few options to eat in evening.
Review 123:Location; view of lake and Mount Fuji from hotel (including from the indoor spring baths, which were deserted both times went there). Easy to get bus to 5th station of Mount Fuji.
Review 124:Was in need of a little renovating.. Carpets were not clean. Asked for a non smoking room and got a smoking room. Wi fi could on be used in the foyer.
Review 125:The location
Review 126:the decoration is very classic, very traditional japanese style, the people there are very nice and friendly, and they are doing their job timely,I like this small hotel and I shared this great experience to my friends and my friends are also willing to choose this hotel when they have the chance to visit there!
Review 127:The hotel is very old and not clean at all. The staff is lacking charm and it is not very helpful. It is not good choice in terms of quality/price. The room was very old fashion and bed uncomfortable. The bathroom was very poor quality, not clean, semi destroyed (our lavabo was falling apart) and the fan very noisy. During low season, I.e. September, the area is not lively and no restaurants are open. You need to walk to the train station, about 15 minutes. Bike prices are quite high for renting. Internet connection is poor and it is only from a spot in the common space. It is the worst hotel choice done in the whole trip in Japan.
Review 128:The onsen has a great view to Fuji, although is very old and not well maintained. There is a free taxi service from the hotel to the train station during morning from 8 to 10 every 30 minutes.
Review 129:bath tub/shower had a huge crack in it, front desk can be difficult to access at times, saw many people calling out to no response. Unable to utilize shuttle service, taxi was about $10 from hotel to train station
Review 130:good breakfast, close to lake, nice views, nice onsen with views,10min walk to ropeway
Review 131:nothing- all good
Review 132:The staff were delightful and very helpful with advising us what to see, booking taxis and bus schedules. They were very humorous too. Our room had a beautiful view over the lake and it was only a minute's walk to catch the bus. Our rooms were neat, clean and simple. We found the living room with lots of brochures on what to see and do locally very helpful. We would return to stay there again anytime and plan to go back in winter. I strongly recommend this wonderful laid back hotel.
Review 133:I saw some bug in the room.
Review 134:Location is good for Fuji.Mt. sightseeing. The room is Japanese style which is easy to feel Japanese culture. I have time I will come back in the future.
Review 135:This hotel provided shuttle service to station. Very good service! The hotel was close to lavender, kawaguchiko lake, diamond museum. It's better to rent a bicycle to tour around lake. When you find anywhere which you like, you can stop and enjoy.
Review 136:Kawaguchiko Hotel is old and in need of repairs. Total cleanliness is lacking, for example the in room shower curtain has mildew growth. The room smells musty.
Review 137:Hotel location is quite good even though not in the main vantage to see the lake and Mount Fuji from the room. Community bath is nice with a good view and a strong aerator/bubler.
Review 138:Not thing.
Review 139:Good view. Clean room. Good service.
Review 140:The cottage is poor maintenance, old, smell and lot of webs
