Reviews for Copthorne Hotel & Resort Solway Park
Review 1:a little further out of the town then I would have liked but not a biggee. I didnt have a park right outside the room but again not a biggie.
Review 2:great facilities, was good to be able to walk to the reception, dinner under cover as it was raining alot
Review 3:We had a wedding @ 4pm and was told there was only one room available as its check in 2pm onwards. Some of the other guests had to wait with us - that's why the cafe was great!
Review 4:liked that it had a cafe on premises as we had driven a distance and needed a coffee!
Review 5:This is the 3rd hotel/motel in 7 days we have stayed in and I think it lacked what the other two had, and that was the personal touch... there was no how was your journey or anything. Just have you stayed before . My reply.. no ... well you here drive round here and this is your room are you booking for dinner? On that notey wife and I thought no.. we will eat out. OK for one night stay be nice though to be told what time facilities close.
Review 6:Very clean and tidy.
Review 7:The property looked a bit tired and the indoor pool was shut for maintenance our first day. The air hockey table in the games room was also out of order
Review 8:There was plenty for the children to do. The café was great and our meal at the restaurant good. The kids loved the buffet. The indoor pool facility is excellent and the squash court and driving range a bonus.
Review 9:The fact that the children's games room had nothing that was in working order, the swimming pool was closed and the children's sky TV channel was not working
Review 10:Location
Review 11:The pool was rather cold for a sunny day..... but after a few minutes I decided to take the plunge. Maybe a cover over it at the end of the day?
Review 12:Although we did not eat at the restaurant. We had a peaceful nights sleep away from road noise. Although we could here the gentle running of the pools water falls, it was soothing.
Review 13:I had made a reservation for a meal at the restaurant for 7.30pm via booking.com and requested a confirmation via email. On arrival at the restaurant there was no reservation in our name. We had requested a car park when booking via booking.com but were not advised until booking in that we did not have an allocated car park outside our room and would have to park in the general area outside. This was no a major issue for us, but could be for others. The tap to action the bath was broken and came off. The shower head did not operate correctly and dispersed water in a solid hard flow. The room although reasonably nice was dark and gloomy, the décor a bit tired. General Maintenance of the building exterior was noticeable in the patio area. Although the food was nice the dining area was purely basic, uninviting and soulless. The usual dining area I believe was set up for Christmas day so dining for dinner and breakfast was carried out in the room next door, a bit disappointing when we had especially decided to have a nice treat to ourselves on Christmas Eve. We have stayed at the Solway quite a few times over the past twenty years and on many occasions we have recommended this facility to many families. Unfortunately this time we were disappointed. We think it is time for an upgrade to the facilities.
Review 14:The food in the restaurant for dinner was excellent
Review 15:Fantastic stay for Xmas, lots of relaxing, swimming and eating. Xmas lunch was exceptional, cafe was superb and our son practically lived in the swimming pools!
Review 16:Place is looking quite dated, we had mould on bottom of windows in our room, and I think for $27.50 per head for breakfast is wasn't the best
Review 17:Indoor pool
Review 18:We thought overall the whole place was tired the carpet in the room was only just average the rubbish tin outside the room was full the carpark entrance to the motel needed a good scrub
Review 19:ok for a clean bed and hot shower
Review 20:Private spa pool would be amazing to have back- especially for couples who are wanting peace and quiet away from the pool area where the only spa is left.
Review 21:The restaurant was amazing.
Review 22:spa pool not hot , other pool cold outside bedroom back door very dirty small table and chairs very very dirty .
Review 23:Location was ok. ( sorry ticked wrong box in location )
Review 24:Beds could have been a bit better - the mattress was a bit lumpy :( Also the restaurant food prices were a bit too pricey for Masterton - and also in the cafe.
Review 25:Nice pool Nice bathrooms Good sized rooms Good air con Nice cleaning staff I have already recommended your venue to some young families - it is an excellent venue for a family holiday :) Lots of fun activities and amenities for families
Review 26:The beds were a little hard for us.
Review 27:So much to do there, and everything was clean and we'll looked after. Also the lovely scenery of trees and flower gardens.
Review 28:Unable to access golf driving range through cafe after 3pm. Overall the place needs a lot of maintenance .paint peeling on the outside of the building and if left will cost a lot more to repair
Review 29:The use of the pool and spa. Restaurant meal lovely Reception staff on sunday very friendly and smiley unlike the manager when I checked in.
Review 30:Our kettle was broken but they replaced it very quickly. Perhaps the maintanence Crew need to do a bit of quality control on appliances more often.
Review 31:Friendly accomodating staff. Very child friendly as we had a 1 year old with us.
Review 32:Unfortunately had noisey young neighbours for the night. Perhaps need to locate similar age groups together. Not a lot of sleep to be had.
Review 33:Good size room, very clean and well equipped, excellent parking for larger vehicles.
Review 34:No kitchen facilities you offer a jug but no sink to wash anything didn't like the fact we had to rinse in the bathroom
Review 35:Liked the clean room wifi beautiful location lots for kids to do
Review 36:Needs painting looks very drab. Ropes course needs repair. Not enough right handed Golf clubs.
Review 37:Fun time with kids. Easy holiday. The expansive grass areas and pools great for mum sunbathing and kids playing. very clean looking pools and gym. Breakfast buffet good. Good housekeeping.
Review 38:I enjoyed the bush walk especially after a day at the Hockey Turf. Children enjoyed the indoor pool and meeting other children. The fitness room was also a favourite and great being able to see the kids in the pool. The chance to give Squash a go.
Review 39:The restaurant was less than half full but they said they were fully booked for the night. And there was minimal places to dine in the town besides fast food
Review 40:Loved all the amenities available
Review 41:No real options in terms of food. Only the restaurant and that was good but expensive.
Review 42:Location close to Showgrounds - clean room good shower helpful staff.
Review 43:It never occurred to me that a hotel aspiring to this standard would not have a coffee plunger in each room. Even the crummy old Matador in Carterton does this guys. Minor niggle - the turquoise exterior paint is really foul.
Review 44:Nicely upgraded rooms, lovely dinner at restaurant & prompt tasty room service breakfast. Staff in restaurant were top notch.
Review 45:The accommodation, food, service, facilities aere always top notch. The staff were extremely helpful when we could not return home after our sporting event due to bad weather.
Review 46:Had to wait far too long for a main course. Spoke to lady, who then reported me to another lady in our group, not a good look. I spoke to her in confidence.
Review 47:Quite a relaxed atmosphere.
Review 48:Our bed had a broken leg but otherwise the room was great.
Review 49:The children loved the trampoline, the board games, the games room, it was great that there was lots to do.
Review 50:Not sure if booking.com or hotel fault but only 1 room booked. After a long drive it was disconcerting for people who booked and lauded booking.com service and for father of young child wondering if had room initially.
Review 51:Location and openness of whole area plus playground and pool to entertain young childen
Review 52:The staff were not very friendly. Front of house did not smile and the lady at the driving range was rude.
Review 53:Activties for the kids. Loved the pool, games room and driving range.
Review 54:Poor reception staff who did not want to listen Room not made up on return at 1430 for a snooze and a read with the windows open, was disapointing Poor wifi
Review 55:Location Food in restaurant Great waitress, service with a smile
Review 56:we were asked for our credit card details. and I advised that I didn't want it charged to my card. I was advised that it was only in case we incurred extra charges. when I went to settle the account. we were advised that the room had been paid for out of our credit card. we booked in for dinner on the Saturday evening. whilst my Husband's came out with all the trimmings. I had to wait nearly 5 minutes for my vegetables to be delivered. I thought this was not acceptable as all should have been delivered at the one time.
Review 57:I booked online at $120 night, charged $133, guy at checkout tried to fob off to booking people. Spa pool was cold
Review 58:I stay for work and normally have a fantastic experience, so thought I would bring the family down, just a couple of things let the trip down
Review 59:The lack of golf clubs (right hand) there wernt too many playing but everyone struggled to get right hand clubs.
Review 60:I like that you have everything there for kids to do without having to drive many different places
Review 61:Ordered room service, had to ring back after an hour asking how much longer it was gonna be, think they must have forgotten about it, finally arrived at 9.30pm and half of it was cold
Review 62:I bought One alcoholic bev at the bar, it was revoltin, was a vodka and Lemonade Which my Friend also had, she didn't Drink hers, i finished my own but wasn't going Back for more. Tasted like a bucket of sugar with no Booze, and too much of the over the top sugary lemonade.
Review 63:Loved the Room and facilities on the complex. And Love that you have Heat pumps in the Rooms. Great for Winter
Review 64:Beautiful park surroundings, nice native bush walk, playground and confidence course. Their kids-stay-free policy made a double room (with two double beds that slept four of us) very cost effective.
Review 65:A bit of a hike into the CBD; you would have to have transport. Decor a bit tired and dated; a bit of an update is overdue.
Review 66:Helpful staff, comfortable, quiet rooms, great facilities. Excellent meal at the Grill. Lots to keep teenagers occupied.
Review 67:The rooms with young children they are not seperate rooms all beds are shared in one room making it impossible for to put them to sleep then being able to relax as the beds are right next to each other meaning when they go to bed so does everyone not suitable for families with young children. Mine are 4 and 1 and was impossible to put them down at reasonable time and for the adults to relax and unwind and enjoy the holiday.
Review 68:Buffet breakfast was extremely disappointing. Half an hour before the session was due to end there were only the dregs of food left out, only two glasses and three tea cups. a complete waste of $25 each for my daughter and I. Will not be bothering with breakfast again. Shower was awful - temperature kept fluctuating up and down and you had to keep adjusting.
Review 69:House keeping staff were nice.
Review 70:We stayed for the weekend and we utilised all the great facilities. Our children loved the golf range and swimming pool. Its a lovely place for families and great place for adults to relax while children play. Would definitely visit again in the near future.
Review 71:I was very unhappy that i was not able to be seated in the hotel restaurant that night as a guest i would expect to at least get a seat as it was only for one and previously we had to find another place to eat as well ?? guests should have space set aside for them as they pay enough, Then in the morning i was the only guest and turned up at 7 and the cooked breakfast was not ready, then 20 minutes of waiting, i got myself bacon and eggs as i knew i could eat them and the young lady there said that the sausages and hash browns were gluten free so i had them as well and i don't know if they were cross contaminated or just not gluten free but upon returning to my room i threw up and had the trots showered and slept for two hours before checking out were i was charged $27.50 on top of the room upgrade which i was under the understanding that breakfast was included and states $25 not saying gst not inclusive ?? I was not in any mood to try to talk to anyone about it and found the staff member that greeted me that morning in the restaurant to be distant and not very good with people or just being very rude she was standing behind the front desk when i approached it at 6.45 asking after breakfast as the evening staff member who checked me in said breakfast was from 6 and she was drinking her coffee chatting and looked at me and walked away letting someone else serve me then when i went to the restaurant at 7 she was just short! and the only saving grace was the young lady that was setting up was so pleasant and tried to help with my diet requirements There was very limited sky channels or the tv wasn't tuned in right
Review 72:Room was great water pressure rocked and the hotel in general was great
Review 73:Our room smelt a little of cigarette smoke and the queen bed was fairly average regarding comfort.
Review 74:the pool and things for the children were great. family apartment- had everything we needed.
Review 75:Common areas (eg hallways) still look a little shabby, with worn carpet. Entertainment room looks a little in need of an update too.
Review 76:Everything all under one roof. Clean, refurbished rooms. Restaurant meals of a very good standard and offered a wide range to choose from.
Review 77:The restaurant is over priced and is not suitable for families with young children. The restaurant staff were not helpful. The dinner meal was mass produced, lukewarm and overpriced The bar menu is way too limited and the café is open on very limited hours so is not an alternative for breakfast or Friday nights. There was a long black hair in our bed between the sheets when we turned it back
Review 78:The outdoor facilities The open gas fire in the big lounge which is a great area to relax and read the paper Plenty of parking space
Review 79:We stayed in a family room as only one available, there were holes in the wall where in the past something had been screwed to the wall. Wallpaper in places was torn and peeling away fixed head shower reasonable pressure but a bit low for me
Review 80:The room was very shabby. Told of multimillion dollar upgrade, didn't see it. Hotel WIFI very poor and hard to connect in my room. You missed out restaurant and bar food in your questions, both very poor for the price
Review 81:Facilities in room quite good. (refer next column). Facilities at hotel quite good, although did not have time to use them.
Review 82:male knocked on my day , was in gown , as i walked to open he walked in with key , said was checking mouse traps under bed.. not happy he walked in not happy to hear about mousetraps
Review 83:near the spa and coffee shop , help from staff re taxis buses. options with food.. liked garens and privacy of room
Review 84:The apartment we rented was shabby and certain areas had not been cleaned in a long while, eg around the exterior of the shower, the window sills and the skirtings were covered in dust and dead bugs; the heater was splashed with a green substance and the wardrobe doors had splatters of white liquid, maybe milk. I took photos of all this and went to see reception. When I complained, I was informed that this area of the hotel was "unrated". We thought we h ad booked 4 star accommodation!! We were also told to complain to the manager as that the only way "things would get done". I was also told that the hotel was owned by a trust and there were not funds for refurbishment!! Bizarrely we thought we were booking good quality accommodation but it turned out it to be not even on the rating scale.
Review 85:The duty manager send a bowl of fruit and a bottle of wine after I brought to her attention the poor state of the room.
Review 86:Very noisey. Continual stream of people going past room including noisey children. Was told we would not hear road traffic and we did. Also could hear fan motors on neigbouring roof all night. Very uncomfortable pillows. And we could not get a meal in the dining room at 6pm on account of a large group booked in and we woul dhave to wait for 2 hours and it was suggested we have a room service meal instead. Very disappointed.
Review 87:We were booked in as a couple & 2 children & put in a 2 bed room apartment. We had no children so didn't need 2 rooms. We were put in the older part of the complex & it really needs upgrading.
Review 88:Staff pleasant and helpful. 8
Review 89:First night thoughtless fellow travellers on both sides of our room were very noisy; continual slamming car doors or allowing room door to slam shut. TV up so loud late at night another customer banged on their door to turn their tv down. Walls paper thin. Second night wonderful peaceful sleep as thoughtless travellers gone.
Review 90:Location- wonderful setting with lovely grounds and views of the mountains. Staff very pleasant and helpful. Spacious room and bathroom with good toiletries.
Review 91:I did not have a bad experience, but wished I could have turned the fan off in the bathroom when we went to bed. Ifelt for the price thou breakfast should have been included.
Review 92:it was quiet and clean.
Review 93:The bed was not of the quality I would expect for a 4-star hotel. A topper pad had been placed on an older mattress, which was not comfortable at all. My husband & I both slept poorly both nights as a result.
Review 94:Value for money, nice décor in the room, bathroom well-appointed, staff helpful & polite.
Review 95:The rooms we were in are really tired and dated. I know they have done some rooms up but the ones we were in was very old and rundown.
Review 96:It is in a good location.
Review 97:The Restaurant meals were not good. My Seafood Chowder had a skin on it like it had been sitting and then warmed up - this seemed to be the case with all our meals.
Review 98:Great price and facilities.
Review 99:The only complaint would be constant slamming of doors in the morning, but that could be other guests.
Review 100:I have stayed here a fair few times over the years. Always clean, good quality and comfortable. Majority of the staff are very good and friendly. It has everything you could want in a resort and more.
Review 101:Long hair on the floor of the bathroom and other things which showed the bathroom had not been thoroughly cleaned.
Review 102:The comfortable accommodation with lovely grounds/surroundings.
Review 103:Would have liked to have stayed longer, but time didn't permit.
Review 104:Our room was a good size with comfortable beds and a pleasant outlook. Leisure activities on offer also looked good.
Review 105:Everything ! Very impressed the only thing is we visited at the end of our holiday and we wish we would have found it at the start because it would have been a perfect place to base for. 4 days good for our 4 year old - we found places like this very far and between on our trip to NZ. Souch to do in this area as I said we will be back - such good value for money!
Review 106:Only stayed for one night as on trip round North Island. It looked like it had been recently updated and was lovely and clean also. Menu at restaurant was varied and all sounds inviting. The meals we had were well presented and tasty.
Review 107:Noise from the slamming doors (Rm 313) and the bad smell coming from the sump outside the golf cafe side entrance.
Review 108:Facilities and staff helping late at night to sort a bed.
Review 109:I go there once or twice a year. The best hotel ever. Awesome service. Staff makes you feel welcome every time. Will always be my number one hotel. Good work guys.
Review 110:The indoor pool claimed to be heated to 28 degrees. The chill was taken off but boy I still thought it was cold. Babies I witnessed found it to be too cold and I only went in once. Also no shallow end so my 6 year old couldn't go in without a parent. Not ideal for a family pool
Review 111:The grounds were much bigger than we thought and the standard room had more than enough space for us our 2 children. The food in the cafe was excellent will definitely stay there again.
Review 112:Kids menu very disappionting, unhealthy no variety, the chef is good so why cant they provide something better doubt i would take my child to dine there again
Review 113:Our 4th stay always impressed with staff n service, good restaurant and very nice food very understanding waiting staff
Review 114:Good bed and bathroom with plenty of room and very good facilities: wifi was free and unlimited and the attached grill restaurant is well worth your visit. Very good value for money.
Review 115:Cleaners did a terrible job. dishes were not washed and just left in my room, bed covers just pulled back but not made properly. rubbish left and not taken away. floor not vacumned. wifi was shocking!!!! Guy at Reception told me that its Masterton as a whole and thats why its bad. when I asked my work mates both have wifi and said its great in Masterton?? Found they never really cared about the cleanliness of the room. all was said is "I will send an email to cleaner".. would you not offer to come clean the room while i'm still there another night??. Food was very pubby. quite average for the price.
Review 116:very comfy bed
Review 117:Nothing really.
Review 118:This time the area we stayed in was quiet. (Last time we were by noisy families). Good clean facilities. Everything was there we needed. Close to town and nearby shops.
Review 119:However I did think that compared to the reception area the room was quite dated and is in need of a spruce up. Especially compared to the rooms that others in the group were staying it
Review 120:Room was clean, and perfectly fine
Review 121:Spa broke down on 2nd day; pool table out of action; room only set up for 2 (cups, towels etc) ; food at dinner okay but not great, service at dinner was pretty average
Review 122:Room was fine. Kids and us enjoyed liked indoor pool and golf drive. Food in cafe was good. Breakfast was good and plentiful - kept coming out almost to 10 am; normally service cheerful and helpful
Review 123:Rooms were very tired and it is extremely expensive for what you get Not sure there is a major difference between this hotel and the motels along the same street Overall disappointing and glad a short stay
Review 124:The location is easy and the staff are friendly Main public spaces are ok
Review 125:restaurant was fully booked moments before we tried to reserve a table for our group of 9. a large party of 32 had just made a block booking, so we couldn't be accommodated for an early meal. we had 3 young children in or family group who could not wait till 8pm to sit down to dinner. very disappointing
Review 126:Staff had reserved adjoining rooms for ourselves and 2 other of our family groups without being asked, which was nice in a large busy hotel.Thank you. lots of outside space for the young children to play, they enjoyed he kids playgrounds and pool till it was 'invaded' by a large group of teenage girls who basically took over.
Review 127:the pool was very cold and perhaps should not be advertised as a 'heated' pool. The spa was very small and cold. The food in the restaurant was not edible. Pepper steak sauce was so hot it could not be consumed.
Review 128:Outside play areas were very nice. Value for money for what we paid.
Review 129:Waited over an hour for our food & when it arrived my steak was well done not medium rare. Was willing to overlook this as I was very hungry but it was too salty to eat. Had to send back it was so bad. People at the next table also complained about their steaks being cold.
Review 130:rooms were good & the staff excellent.
Review 131:Design of bathroom tap made it difficult to fill electric jug with water.
Review 132:Large comfortable beds, spacious unit, modern bathroom. Great cafe and restaurant. Loved the indoor pool.Lovely outdoor area to wander in.
Review 133:Rooms ajoined to main corridor so quite a bit of noise is heard in room from the hallway.
Review 134:Nice clean superior rooms, well equipped and lots of activities for the kids onsite, good onsite restaurant and service.
Review 135:There was no aspect of my stay that I did not like.
Review 136:Location great. Really friendly and efficient staff. Great parking right outside your room. Very comfortable and welcoming.
