Reviews for Chalet Saudade
Review 1:Bath robes and slippers are always needed ni matter of value. The food in Saudade cafe was nice, but it was repetitive and the choice is limited.
Review 2:The staff was really nice and helpful. The place is just near the train station. The ambience of the chalet was really charming. The overall price/quality is super.
Review 3:Just be aware, that travelling by car is not easy into Sintra and locating the chateau is tricky, need someone on the ball with you, even though the directions are good.
Review 4:An unusual beautiful chateau in the heart of Sintra. Having breakfast at the restaurant around the corner added to the experience. Rooms were individual and beautifully decorated.
Review 5:warm welcome; friendly staff; great location to explore Sintra/close to the railway station; art nouveau interior and exterior; amazing breakfast (try Café Saudade even if you do not have breakfast included - great food and value for money); would stay here again when visiting Sintra
Review 6:Room size. I was staying B2, not much fresh air.
Review 7:Beautiful house with garden. Staff vey nice and helpful. Good location. Max 5 min walk to train station. Convenient to buses.
Review 8:Cards open more room doors, so we had an intruder who entered our room by mistake - shouldn't happen.
Review 9:More or less everything. Excellent breakfast.
Review 10:nothing
Review 11:old house in good conditions. nice atmosphere and stuff. the Cafe is very good, we went there every morning though our stay didnot include breakfast.
Review 12:We came out from the railway station, walked across the road and found a stone steps right there, followed it down to a street, turned left and found the chalet. It was easy to get there, even we had bulky luggages. It is a stylish guest house with antique-like interior deco. The sitting room has a view over-looking the valley. The room we stayed adjoins a small garden which has a nice veiw as well. The breakfast was great. Also, the restaurant is an interesting place to visit.
Review 13:The stairs were something of a challenge. A lift would have made this absolutely perfect
Review 14:Location - easy to access all that Sintra has to offer. Staff who had anticipated most of the information you might need and helped with everything else. A lovely large sized bedroom.
Review 15:Some hotel rooms are actually in underground. So be careful when you book the room.
Review 16:It is very beautiful house and very classic decoration in the public areas .
Review 17:The staff were brilliant and so friendly, the hotel itself is gorgeous, and the associated Cafe was great value, really friendly staff and yummy food, what could be better in a absolutely beautiful town?
Review 18:The Chalet Saudade is a lovely historical guesthouse in a lovely setting. As soon as I walked through the gate I was charmed by the plants and statues and sky blue color or the house. We were met by Ines, who was so lovely and helpful and after check in she invited us to have a complimentary glass of port and to relax in the parlor and porch area of this beautifully restored home. Our room was a couple of levels down and looked out on a garden. How wonderful to start the day by opening the windows and listening to the birds and looking out on the trees and flowers. We were a world away. The room was divided between a sitting room area with small kitchenette and the bedroom, so we enjoyed having the two separate areas. The breakfast (included) is served at the Cafe Saudade which is located a couple of blocks away. These breakfasts were so delicious and so large! You could take away leftovers for later. The hotel does have a spot in front where you can park while you are unloading your bags and checking in. After check in, you will need to move your car to a nearby lot or a spot on the street. Those who do drive to Sintra (as we did) should know that your patience can be solely tested. Parking is very limited, especially if you arrive mid-day. The parking lots were full but we considered ourselves lucky to snag a spot on the street after about 45 minutes. For spots on the street, you have to return every four hours to purchase another ticket to place in your car. However, if you do get a parking ticket violation, the cost is minimal (2 Euro in our case) and the hotel is kind enough to send in your payment. My recommendation for drivers would be to arrive the night before (after 5 pm when the day-trippers have already left). I would think long and hard about driving there at all during summer when tourism is at its height (we were there in October).
Review 19:You have to know that this facility is a renovated house which was built more than a 100 years, so it doesn't have an elevator. Stairs are a bit narrow, but we didn't complain as we don't have children :) . Good to know if you have to carry big suitecases.
Review 20:Amazing suite with a terrefic view over the montains... Extreemly comfortable and cozy... Spacious and has a small kitchenette.
Review 21:My sister had a triple room and was put in the basement. Room was not at all comfortable. Friends had a different room in the basement. They also disliked it. Make sure you do not get put in the basement.
Review 22:Staff was friendly and helpful. Great location. Room 1 was very nice.
Review 23:The location is good, the rooms are clean and cute, the house is gorgeous, the staff is welcoming and helpful. Great breakfast. I'd stay here again.
Review 24:Room 4 was very quiet at the back with a lovely outlook. Wonderful comfy beds with nice linens. Excellent staff-friendly and very helpful. Fantastic breakfast in a great cafe.
Review 25:no hot water at 2 am, but than, who needs that at that time normally?
Review 26:Absolute fantastic breakfast in the Saudade café about 150 meters from the hotel. The super clean rooms are in a beautifull over 140 years old "Jugendstil" property that you will hardly find anywhere else in Portugal than in Sintra.
Review 27:We chose the standard room and it was small and basic which was okay but the shower was very cramped.
Review 28:The location and the staff were great. Filipa was especially helpful and gave us some good information about Sintra. The breakfast was a generous amount of food and was fine. The Cuban server at breakfast was delightful, attentive and friendly.
Review 29:Loved everything
Review 30:Excellent location. Near sites, restaurants and shopping! Beautiful boutique hotel. Sintra is amazing. Suggest minimum two day stay. Breakfast was great! Staff very helpful!
Review 31:The staff is friendly and courteous. They were also quick to address any problems or to give us recommendations for restaurants and attractions in the town. The facilities are beautiful, well maintained, and comfortable. A delicious breakfast at the Cafe Saudade was included, even on days that the cafe was closed. We had absolutely no complaints, and will be sure to return to this hotel on our next visit to Sintra.
Review 32:Too many stairs. They didn't have enough keys to the front door as a guest didn't give back the front door key upon check out. Not their fault but as they were still waiting for another guest to check in, I offered up my key. Unfortunately that meant I had to knock everytime I went in and out, which disturbed reception and made me feel unwelcomed when I had done a favour. Reception should have a little checklist to remember to ask for keys or perhaps have extra front door key. I volunteered my key to help out but it ended up being an inconvenience to me.
Review 33:The location near the train station. It's a charming building from the street and once you get inside.
Review 34:smelly poor quality soap , no shampoo in the bathroom , poor quality towels . hard mattress .
Review 35:450 historic building belong to one family. Antic furniture , surroundings , perfect location ,very pleasant owner .
Review 36:It's a pity the rooms are all in the lower ground levels...
Review 37:Beautifully refurbished and decorated, this chalet offers modern facilities (including AC) in a historic house. Breakfast at Cafe Saudade is excellent, and staff are very helpful!
Review 38:Rarely have I come across such a beautiful place, with such good taste, and romantic atmosphere. I bookes a small room which turned out to be too small for our convenience , and the great staff upgraded us, free of charge to a beautiful big room (of course it is subject to availability). Also the Breakfast in the Cafe is fantastic and the staff helped us to the station with our lugage, We cannot parise this hotel enough !! a real charm !!
Review 39:-
Review 40:Everything was perfect! Easy and close for those who are travelling by train. The breakfast is wonderful, served at a charming cafe owned by this hotel. 10min ealking to the city centre. Staff is very helpfull and nice! Really reccomend it!!
Review 41:The room on the lower level was right next to the door guests use for late entrance. The door slammed at least 5 times after 11 when we were trying to sleep. The shower was extremely small and you could barely turn around. The place overall was great just stay away from room.
Review 42:Staff were very helpful and really made sure we had a memorable visit. They went above and beyond in assisting us and we loved the fado. Breakfast was great and the location was perfect.
Review 43:Ok for us but there are some steep stairs in the property which may be a challenge to some
Review 44:A lovely historic building perfectly positioned for a short walk to the Palace of Sintra and acess to transport to all the other sights in the area. Staff extremely helpful and friendly and lots of additional information available at reception and some nice touches like ' help yourself to a glass of port'. Some good places to eat just across the road or a short walk away. Breakfast in the separate cafe is FAB and huge. You just must try the scones but make sure you are hungary!. Cafe is also rated the best place to eat in Sintra on Google etc
Review 45:Location is great, near the train station and all bus stops.Only 15min walk to the central. Great reception makes us feel like home and help us make the visiting plan in Sintra. Lovely house.Always can find some cute details they put on the wall. Super value yummy breakfast.
Review 46:Very noisy and tiny room, terrible service. It was such a noise from hotel condition box outside near our window that we had to close the window completely, but it didn't help and we couldn't sleep because of the noise. The manager didn't propose any solution or compensation and we had to leave this hotel next morning.
Review 47:photos of hotel
Review 48:This apartment was spacious and clean with a massive bed! The staff were friendly and informative. The staff even provided a bath tub with toys for our little baby which was great! The breakfast at the cafe was also fabulous! The location of the apartment was great, within 10-20min walk from the sites. The train station is under a 5min walk. We found free street parking near the railway station. Highly recommend staying at this hotel!
Review 49:we stayed in the bedroom under the reception & we found it very noisey in the morning the floor needed soundproofing. if you are an early riser maybe it wouldn't be a problem but we like to get up later than 8 am.
Review 50:The chalet has been restored to a very high standard with lots of attention to details such as light fittings furniture. It really is stunning and we felt quite smug walking out each morning. Serving breakfast at their cafe is a great idea , as it means you can eat when ever you want we suited us as we like a late start. We never went hungry. The cafe is also beautiful. The bed was huge & very comfy which is always a winner!
Review 51:Nothing
Review 52:Great welcome. Friendly staff. Clean, well appointed room. Excellent location. Good restaurants very near. Beautiful, well furnished, interesting and quirky decoration. COMPLIMENTARY PORT!
Review 53:This was a unique property, obviously lots of thought given to every detail. Breakfast served in a separate street cafe which was equally unique. Staff were so friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Particularly Fleur in the residence and Cuba in the cafe. Unbelievable value for money! Will be back.
Review 54:There were a number of stairs to go down to our particular room, but for us it was not a problem.
Review 55:The staff were very friendly and helpful. The room we booked was a superior double and had a private garden. Unfortunately it was raining so we did not get to use it. The room which was a decent size with very comfortable beds was located on the opposite side of the street so very quiet. Breakfast was included in our booking and the location was a short walk away, but it was worth it to enjoy breakfast in this cozy little restaurant with extremely pleasant staff. Free parking was located near by, and the train station, the historic part of town, and restaurants were all within a short walking distance. We were very pleased with this accommodation.
Review 56:Beautiful restored house. Great breakfast at their companion restaurant. Excellent location in Sintra. Close to the train station, to the palaces and castles.
Review 57:The staff didn't inform us that the breakfast hours had changed one day do we didn't get our included breakfast. At the end, when discussing the lack of breakfast we forgot to return the key and then had to mail it back/ that was an extra cost plus the list breakfast for two.
Review 58:The place, location for us, was perfect. The chalet couldn't have been better. We loved it.
Review 59:No bad experience, but a necessary warning. I am 85 and still handle stairs well. But this may not be the place for you if you have stair problems. The house is built on a hill-side, so several flights of narrow stairs are there.
Review 60:Young, very helpful staff. Owners very involved in running the place - he was helping out at café, she watering the out-front flowers. Terrific breakfast at the café. Wonderful to relax on the enclosed rear porch, overlooking the valley, glass of port wine (gratis) in hand. Really, couldn't have been much better
Review 61:Wonderful location, beautiful home. All of the staff were extremely helpful (thanks Innish & Philippa!) and breakfast (with our Cuban friend Yunieski) was excellent. We really enjoyed our stay.
Review 62:The staff were incredibly helpful and even delivered a pair of shoes we accidentally left there to our next hotel in Lisbon! Amazing! The property was cute and full of character. The location was close to the train station and a 15 min walk to the old town.
Review 63:Nothing!
Review 64:Everything was amazing! The staff was beyond helpful and so friendly! We stayed here while we were getting married in Sintra and the staff went above and beyond to make sure we were well taken care of during our stay. The location is great; it's a short walk from the train station & a short walk from the main area with the National Palace. Our room was very clean and well appointed. The breakfast in the cafe was wonderful!
Review 65:The chalet is beautiful and the staff were very helpful. The breakfast in the cafe was really lovely along with the staff, young Cuban waiter was particularly helpful. I have no complaints and would recommend the property.
Review 66:Parking in front during the day was impossible, just dropping off the luggage caused the police to get involved.. better arrive by train or after 7pm.
Review 67:Welcoming and helpful staff, comfortable bed, quiet at night and central to walk the town. Absolutly awesome breakfast!
Review 68:This hotel is stunning. The staff is incredible. The rooms are beautiful and very comfortable. Excellent location right across from train station and near historic centre. The breakfast is delicious and the cafe (owned by the hotel) is too cute. We loved everything and hope to return one day.
Review 69:The staff is very helpful. Provided us attraction and restaurants recommendations. Rooms are clean and spacious. Location is very convenient close to train station. Complementary breakfast at the nearby bakery is also wonderful!! Really enjoy the stay
Review 70:A really lovely place to stay with lots of charming personality! We got engaged on this trip- so this was a special place to be. I loved the building itself and the room was very spacious and comfortable. Also- I left my nice electric toothbrush there on accident and they took the time to mail it back to me! :)
Review 71:Truly the best place to stay in Sintra. Loved everything, especially the free Porto. Quiet and convenient location, super clean and comfortable, friendly and helpful staff and owners, interesting decor. Excellent breakfast around the corner. Recommend highly. Will go back.
Review 72:I really have to think about something that I liked less... maybe the shower that was a bit small.
Review 73:Very friendly hosts, beautiful place renovated with good taste and attention to details. Well located a few steps away from the station. Breakfast at Café Saudade is very good. Highly recommended!
Review 74:Nothing.
Review 75:The house itself is beautiful. So quirky and pretty. We stayed in room11 which is huge and opens out onto a pretty little terrace garden. But the real gems at the Chalet are the staff. I travel at least once a week for work and I've stayed in 5* hotels where I wasn't as well looked after as I was at Chalet Saudade. They were impeccable.
Review 76:After a shower the floor was wet. Window to a wall.
Review 77:Nice room in the basement. Beautiful house and friendly staff. Breakfast in a cafe arround the corner was really good.
Review 78:I've traveled a lot over the years and this property, the staff and every aspect of the experience would have to rate in the highest. Value for money ++
Review 79:Parking was initially difficult to obtain. Negotiating the stairs would be difficult for those with limited mobility although the staff were very happy to provide assistance with luggage.
Review 80:Staff were welcoming and helpful. The Cuban waiter in the breakfast cafe was very hospitable & helpful also. A quiet location & our room ( with kitchenette) was spacious.
Review 81:Nice location close to but out of the center and with two nice restaurants close at hand. Cafe where breakfast was served was also nice for light lunches. Server, Juni, and other staff very welcoming, as was owner, Luis. Lovely, spacious room and bath.
Review 82:The location is close to the train station but a bit far from the Centro. The building is a vertical building there has 3 floors underground and so it might not be a great idea for elderly and people with bad knees or legs
Review 83:The staff were very friendly and the atmosphere and the building itself gives an Alice in Wonderland feel :)
Review 84:Beautiful restored residence -- the downstairs rooms (we rented the two on the garden) were wonderful. Bountiful breakfast served at nearby café owned by same owners as the hotel. It was really quite a fantastic stay. Great staff at both the hotel and café. What can I say? It's one of my best travel experiences. We were a group of 4 -- two kids around the age of 20. All good!
Review 85:Room and bathroom are small.
Review 86:Felt very welcome by the friendliness of the staff both at the chalet and the cafe. Good location near the train station. Rooms were very adequately air conditioned. Loved the pasteis de nata served during breakfast;)
Review 87:NOTHING!!!!
Review 88:The location the staff were so accommodating to any request we made of them. The owners were so fun and giving us so many things to go and see and do. The inside to relax in the afternoon and in the evening Port to enjoy and relax with. The views were spectacular and the backyard so relaxing with places to nap or read.
Review 89:Just be aware, everyone uses narrow staircase to all rooms If stairs are a problem, this place is not for you
Review 90:Conveniently located to center of town Walking distance to transportation to Castles Staff extremely helpful and friendly Good English Rooms clean and comfortable
Review 91:Close to trains and easy walk to restaurants. Breakfast around the corner was excellent in a lovely cafe run by very pleasant women. Staff at house were helpful and friendly. A lovely homely place to stay.
Review 92:There is nothing one cannot like!
Review 93:We were much in need of a quiet place, with beautiful views and tasteful atmosphere..and Chalet Saudade gave us all these and more!! Wonderful place, great people and amazing location!! I could use more positive description for this place, and still not do it justice! We are in love with Saudade!
Review 94:Nothing to complain about!
Review 95:What a wonderful little oasis just on the edge of Sintra town center. Gorgeously restored old home with all modern amenities. The staff couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. Room were beautiful; felt like home. Breakfast at the little cafe up the street was fantastic!
Review 96:Nothing...best bed and breakfast I've stayed at!
Review 97:This place makes you feel like you entered a fairy tale. From the picturesque entry way to the gorgeous garden, the atmosphere can't be beat. Service was sensational and even though we were only able to stay for one night, it immediately felt like home. The free breakfast at cafe saudade is also absolutely delicious! I can't recommend this place enough! Don't miss it.
Review 98:Wonderful older buildings, such as this one built into the hillside, often come without an elevator, so be prepared for a bit of a walk up to the lobby or down to your room if you are lucky enough to get a suite on the terrace level. The hotel staff will help with the luggage to and from your room, but after that you will have to work the stairs out on your own.
Review 99:There was everything to like about this wonderful find in Sintra. Great location, magnificent views from the drawing room whilest sipping complimentary port wine, a magnificent breakfast at their wonderful cafe nearby, and a fantastic suite that offered a private entrance and patio on the terrace overlooking the valley and the older part of this very pretty town. Owners Luise and Mary are extremely friendly and thouughtful, providing my wife and I a surprise bottle of White Porto wine, some Portugese sweets, and a keepsake porcelaine momento for our 25th anniversary after we returned home from a dinner for which they had made a reservation for us and had arranged with the owners to prepare us a special entree and dessert, and along with Carla from their staff had transported our luggage for us up five flights to the lobby so we would be able to leave for an early flight in Lisbon before they were usually opened in the morning. Superb service plus a beautiful home/hotel in an outstanding location. A real winner on every level.
Review 100:Would have liked more variety at breakfast.
Review 101:Excellent proximity to train (and hence Lisbon) and to the delights of Sintra itself. Wonderful restoration of gorgeous 7 storey villa. Complimentary glass of port each evening.
Review 102:nothing to complain
Review 103:everything was OK, nice place, nice room, nice ppl, the breakfast server in a cafe very romantic it's very good, for sure you will return there in the afternoon for the 5 a clock tea or for dinner.
Review 104:Nothing! The only thing that could be done to improve is maybe a fridge in the room, but that is looking for something to suggest. I would say if you are not good at walking you might want to stay somewhere a little closer to the main tourist area as it is around a 10 minute walk up and down hills- however it is very close to a bus stop which is cheap and will take you to all the attractions quickly.
Review 105:Everything; house is gorgeous, so much effort put into the decor. Amazing big bed. Good shower and bathroom. Lovely garden to relax in and watch the sun go down. Very peaceful. Lovely staff. The nicest breakfast I have ever had in a hotel. No problem storing luggage whilst we saw a few more sights before we left. Within walking distance of main tourist area and very close to the train station.
Review 106:Chalet Saudade was one of our favorite hotels during our 5 week trip We stayed in Sintra for 4 nights. The chalet is lovely, both inside and out. The location is very close to the train station, which made it easy to take the train into Lisbon for the day. Breakfast is just around the block at the Café Saudade. Staff at the chalet and the café were very friendly!
Review 107:Amazing decor. Very friendly staff. Characterful, authentic, accommodation, garden views, close to the station, easy walk to historic centre, amazing breakfast!
Review 108:The loveliest hotel I have come across over many years of travel. Wish we could have stayed longer to soak up more of the unique beauty. Owners and staff so friendly and accommodating.
Review 109:Great hospitality and a warm welcome by the owner. The breakfast was fresh and sufficient. The location and condition of the chalet is great. The self-serve complimentary Port was very much appreciated! 100% recommend
Review 110:Wouldn't change a thing!
Review 111:Excellent location for exploring the sites of Sintra. Beautifully restored chalet. Very comfortable accommodations. Super helpful staff!
Review 112:Characterful, authentic, accommodation, garden views, close to the station, easy walk to historic centre, amazing breakfast ... Perfect for 2 nights to peacefully enjoy the 'fairy tale' Sintra experience, with very friendly and helpful staff.
Review 113:The hotel has a great location. It's very cosy and comfortable. The stuff was very attentive. The room we had was spacious and clean, decorated with taste. Great stay in Sintra.
Review 114:Finding the place - arriving in Sintra by car is not recommended; suggest visiting by train from Lisbon. Breakfast taken in a separate building some 200-300 metres away - not ideal in inclement weather. Limited choice of items - too heavy on the sweet bread and cake-type things. Reception staff - one very helpful and pleasant; another much less so. Bedroom lacked the 'wow factor' which previous guests have commented on.
Review 115:Attractive house - beautifully restored by owners. Public areas particularly appealing.
Review 116:Limited coffee available. Breakfast is up the street at the Café Saudade - just a short walk.
Review 117:Large room, quiet at night, good staff and dinner recommendations. Free parking near train station. Good location. Kettle in room. There is one spot in front to unpack your car.
Review 118:Could be seen as a bit pricey for Portugal but it was money well spent!
Review 119:Everything! the house, the room, breakfast, the big cedar tree in front and the helpful & friendly staff. We had big heavy suitcases and there was someone to help carry them to our rooms.
Review 120:Very nice an helpful receptionists! We had a very early check out due to flight from Lisboa, and Carla got us a bag of breakfast at night to bring with us! Great location.
