Reviews for Fossli Hotel
Review 1:Charming oldfashioned hotel, rooms are equipped accordingly, but bathroom up to date. Thanks to the owners to maintain the old spirit, I do not envy them for this job
Review 2:Couldn't see the waterfall from the front of the hotel .... Could you move it please :). Having to walk 40 feet from the front door to see one of the most spectacular sites in the Hardanger region, well...what's not to love!
Review 3:After a spectacular (if winding) drive up, we walked through the doors and slipped back in time to simpler life. It was fantastic...skeleton keys, no TV in the room and no WiFi (except in the primary lobby). It was fantastic! Many upgrades (needed to maintain the infrastructure) are in the works - personally I hope they keep the essential soul of the place. If you are in the region - don't bother trying to find a nicer family to stay with.
Review 4:Just a fantastic hotel! So much history and the staff gives so much information about the history and the surrounding area if you ask. Very friendly. Amazing location. Above and beyond our expectations. Favourite spot we stayed in while on our trip to Norway.
Review 5:I enjoyed the "shabby chic" of the Fossli Hotel. You could tell that it was once a very fine, grand lodge, but such places have fallen out of fashion in favor of modern, box hotels. The location was really perfect, right next to the Voringsfossen. If it hadn't been rainy/foggy while we were there, the view would have really been spectacular. Given the isolated nature of most of the spots outside of the main Norwegian cities, if you're looking for nightlife or dining options beyond the restaurant in the hotel, you will be disappointed. I really enjoyed staying here for one night, wandering around the falls, eating reindeer for dinner, and then moving on the next day; longer than that I think would prove boring.
Review 6:a litle pearl in the most beautufull place, just minutes from the spectacular waterfall, wich by the way you can see and hear from your room. it's full of tradition and the history of the peaple who founded it.
Review 7:These may be minor niggles for fussy people: shower base isn't contained, with a bit of care you avoid too much spill...
Review 8:The location of the hotel is amazing - imagine sitting up in bed and looking over a canyon like valley, listening to a waterfall. It's the ideal spot for exploration of the Hardangervidda and the Eidfjord area. Our room and bathroom were nicely updated, bright and functional. The hotel has old fashioned and unique charm with necessary modern additions, oozes tradition and anyone interested in classic 50s Scandinavian furniture should book a stay, you don't get to sit on the real thing as easily anywhere else. The restaurant serves a limited but well prepared menu at normal prices (no remoteness surcharge...).
Review 9:-I felt a little bit in the Grand Hotel Budapest. -Excellent (Polish) Maitre d'Hotel! -Fantastic access to the waterfall -Great running route around Loved the place.
Review 10:It could use some new couches in front of the picture windows in the lobby.
Review 11:The location above Voringfossen was amazing. The gorge and the falls were right there. The view from our room was spectacular. We loved the charm of the old hotel. It felt like stepping back in time to when gathering in the hotel lobby was a social event. There were so many different areas to spend time, and the view from the picture window in the lobby was breathtaking. We loved our stay.
Review 12:The car park is used for the viewing point for the waterfall so there's a constant stream of cars and coaches during daylight hours
Review 13:Proximity to the falls - a view you would miss from the road as the main waterfall is out of sight. Was easily able to access the footpath to the foot of the falls and get spectacular views.
Review 14:We loved this hotel! We arrived quite late but the receptionist and staff were so warm and welcoming and made us feel at ease. The room was cosy with a wonderful view of the mountains and the rest of the hotel is spectacular! You can sit back on some tasteful sofas in front of a wide window and just gaze for hours. They played really relaxing classical music which suited the decor. So much to look at, wonderful pieces of art and a lovely breakfast. It was pure magic and i am definitely going back one day.
Review 15:Free wifi is restricted to lobby area. No lift, only stairs, may be an issue for some.
Review 16:This hotel has a long history and was for many years a place for the wealthy to visit. Throughout the hotel are artefacts, pictures and stories from yesteryear. It was an absolute pleasure to stay here. The views down the valley over the falls, an excellent evening meal, a peaceful and comfortable sleep, a nice breakfast, attentive staff - were an added bonus.Don't expect any mod cons in rooms but this is part of the historic charm. Plenty of parking.
Review 17:A little out of the way but very nice experience staying in a historical hotel. My daughter was fascinated by the history on display inside.
Review 18:Renovated inside. Lot's of history. Very quiet hotel next to Voringfossen fall.
Review 19:I was able to play Grieg's piano and the host showed us some papers involving Grieg that dated back over a century.. The waterfall was incredible outside.
Review 20:No gutters meant that rain made a lot more noise outside of the windows than it should have...
Review 21:Almost but not quite secluded... lots of visitors during the day but only (few) guests and (few) staff at night - very peaceful that way. We knew it was old and that attracted us, so we weren't disappointed, but it could use some serious little fixes.
Review 22:Lack of information on the hotel
Review 23:Location is fantastic if you like rural settings. Liked the old hotel and history about the place. Meal at restaurant was delicious.
Review 24:Too expensive (even for Norway). Somewhat old infrastructure. Old fashioned (and it shows). Breakfast buffet is somewhat limited compared to others in the same price range.
Review 25:Location is nice (next to the falls)
Review 26:Wifi is only available in the lobby. I find it a little expensive. The chairs in the TV room are nice to see but not very comfortable.
Review 27:It is a nice old hotel on a nice location. The staff is very helpfull. I liked the balcony I got. The first since I am In Norway.
Review 28:the wifi did not work well. no television in the rooms, and everything in the room were rather old. they may reconsider refurbishing certain things while keeping the rustic facade.
Review 29:The staff was really helpful and the restaurant served pretty good food.
Review 30:1) Prices (rest of Norway is also very expensive) 2) rooms were pretty old and simple - but this is a feature of this hotel though 3) no double bed
Review 31:1) the location 2) staff was excellent - it was a Polish man, who could speak English and Russian, always ready to help
Review 32:When it rained the rain fell over the entrance to the hotel which was unavoidable in getting wet and with luggage slowed the process of getting through the door. The keys, though very quaint (the old skeleton metal key), were attached to a large piece of antler and as we had two of them it was difficult to put in a pocket. Too bulky:) Even one was too big.
Review 33:What's not to like! This was a magnificent historical hotel with the memories of bygone years at every turn. The staff were genuinely warm and friendly and professional. Made us feel welcome. Even when I broke the sink plug they made me feel less of an idiot than I felt! The evening meal was 5 star. Served with an abundance of attention to our dining experience. The hotel grounds are situated on a bluff directly adjacent to waterfalls. Don't expect this to be a destination hotel as it is far from anything else so there is little to do other than walk down roads and the very brief walk to the Falls. Kids will be bored more than one day here. But adults can certainly relax and soak up the atmosphere. As it was on a Monday there were few other guests. If there had been more guests it is large enough to accommodate many and not feel crowded. We would return here if ever in the vicinity. For a nice weekend getaway, a resounding yes!
Review 34:Good location, great views, excellent food.
Review 35:Wifi only in the lobby.
Review 36:Awesome staff. Helpful and caring.
Review 37:Breakfast could have more choice of non-dairy products.
Review 38:Olde world feeling of the hotel.
Review 39:Too many buss tourists near the hotel
Review 40:Not much
Review 41:This hotel is like stepping into the pages of history, where graciousness and hospitality rule. Tha staff was great, and the food delicious!
Review 42:Incredible location atop beautiful waterfall
Review 43:The facilities are too old.
Review 44:The view from a terrace was excellent.
Review 45:I like the exceptional view from my room in the hotell, and to fall asleep to the roar of the big waterfall.
Review 46:a bit pricey bathroom felt a bit outdated..
Review 47:Charming traditional design Nice breakfast Great view over the waterfalls
Review 48:Wifi, No dustbins in rooms, old washrooms with separate tap for hot and cold water.
Review 49:Location, Staff, breakfast
Review 50:No wifi in the room.
Review 51:The view, the old world charm of the hotel. it wasn't busy either even for summer peak season.
Review 52:Fantastic location, traditional hotel. Stunning views.
Review 53:Unique surrounding. Kind staff (we reached the hotel late in the evening and the owner prepared us a sandwich and a cup of coffee for dinner)
Review 54:Hotel with charm and character, very authentic, nice & big room, wifi worked excellent, very good breakfast. Waterfall viewpoint is just steps away. one of the best hotel I stayed in during this years' travel thru Norway.
Review 55:Extra expensive restaurant in the hotel.
Review 56:Friendly and very helpful and accomodating staff. Handled our dietary restrictions nicely. Quaint old building. Proximity to the best viewpoint of the falls - 1 minute walk!
Review 57:The food wasnt that worth its price and also the breakfast did not have different options to eat.
Review 58:I liked the location of the hotel. I also liked the staff they were very cooperative.
Review 59:The hotel was in an excellent location. Other reviews we have seen have commented on the 1960's decor, however this seems to be part of the charm of the hotel, and is well maintained. So much of life these days seems to be about replacing everything with something modern regardless of its condition or usefulness, however at Fossli the philosophy seems to be "if it is not broken, do not try to fix it", and indeed all of the features of the hotel are meticulously clean and well maintained. Plus, we slept on one of the most comfortable beds we have every slept on! Then there is the waterfall...
Review 60:there is no refrigerator in the room..
Review 61:friendly and very helpful staff, good restaurant, beautiful old interior, amaizing place; very comfortable staying!
Review 62:With a car you would be able to drive to the second viewing point onthe other side of the waterfall. It would be nice, if the foot path tothis point would be restored (but I think thats not a specific task ofthe hotel).
Review 63:We chose the hotel for its unique location - above a great waterfall andwithout neighbourhood. Only some steps from the hotel you can hear theroaring of the waterfall, a wonderful kind of music. Our room was simplewith a nice little balcony and good working bath room. We had fine teain the hotel hall and an excellent dinner with very friendly service. The kitchen was able to provide also a good vegetarian meal and theFondant was wonderful. All in the loneliness of the mountains and insidea noble dining room - this had style!
Review 64:Phenomenal location. Amazing valley and waterfall less than 100 metres from hotel's front door. Rooms very comfortable and clean. Fantastic breakfast.
Review 65:Location and history of this historical hotel just great. Weathered and perhaps a bit dated on the outside but rooms have been modernized and are very comfotable. just great location to view Voyfossen falls. Very friendly staff and owner.
Review 66:Notting particulary.
Review 67:Very kindly and clever staff. Good food and Good atmosfere. I will com again.
Review 68:A bit old hotel and old rooms. Not much of facilities. No heat in the room
Review 69:Location is good, Staff was excellent very helpful.
Review 70:Excellent experience close to the nature. Well maintained hotel and a perfect place to relax.
Review 71:The location can not be beat. The hotel is historic, and while not new it is charming and well appointed.
Review 72:Flott atmosfære og hyggelig betjening. Me kjem gjerne igjen!
