Reviews for Hotel Brouwerij Het Anker

Review 1:Very basic room looking a bit tired. Charges for a private car park. No bath towels in the room and had to ask twice. Overworked and overtired staff Restaurant had a nice atmosphere but it took a long time to get the food once ordered. Our steak was far too salty and the fries had been cooked in a underheated friture.

Review 2:Pet friendly hotel. Friendly staff. Free wi-fi Lots of space in the room. Ok breakfast

Review 3:Poor replenishment of tea, coffee, toiletries Shower broken all week even after was reported on Monday Key was given with no notification previous guests were in room

Review 4:Convenient location Great Breakfast Nice beer

Review 5:Bar was understaffed and took quiet a while to be served at the table. An extra member dedicated to serving beer would help.

Review 6:Receptionst helpful and friendly. Comfortable quiet room and bar has a good range of beer. Superb brewery tour.

Review 7:Poor wifi service and staff seemed disinterested in correcting it. Brewery turned on machinery at 6:30am, if you're a late sleeper, forget it.it also goes on all through the day, so no naps, either.

Review 8:10 minute walk to city center sights and shopping. Comfortable bed and big shower.

Review 9:Parking places are limited in availability. We had one reserved and when we showed up late the spot was taken. They let u parc in the brewery but in the morning we had to leave. Rooms are good value for the money but could use a lift up. Room was humid

Review 10:The setting of being in an historical brewery is very nice. The breakfast are very good.

Review 11:We were not told that building work was taking place on the brewery when we booked which meant that a lot of the facilities were off limits including the bar/restaurant. The lady who checked us in was not very polite or helpful when we had questions, she did not give us her full attention and made it difficult for us to buy anything. We were there for 2 days but no brewery tours were running. The cleaning staff were very noisy early in the morning long before check out time.

Review 12:The location was nice in the lovely town of Mechelen. The lady who checked us out was very nice. The vending machine dispensing beer was a real treat.

Review 13:The staff is fantastic and while simple, the accommodations are soothing and delightful. Great location, incredible beer. Don't miss this great stop.

Review 14:Staff, location, killer food and drink

Review 15:Double bed was actually two twin beds pushed together, that roll apart. Can be a little noisy in the evening.

Review 16:Good location, nice and big rooms. Breakfast was really good. Good choice for a weekend trip to visit Mechelen. Friendly staff. Cheap and very delicious beer.

Review 17:Rooms rather dark and plain, and located in a separate building to the breakfast venue and bar

Review 18:Central location, easy to find. Breakfast choice and quality were excellent. Sampling the beers brewed on site is a treat, albeit a little pricey.

Review 19:Tasty breakfast. Good location for evening walk in Mechelen center. And don't forget to check out Het Anker restaurant, they have very good beers there.

Review 20:A bit tricky working out how to get there in the car (it's on one side of a dual carriageway). It's not entirely clear what to do when you arrive in your car out of hours e.g. 8pm: the car park and rooms are down the road from the reception which is closed in the evening and you need to go to the adjoining restaurant.

Review 21:Fairly spacious room which was clean. The working brewery on site makes it interesting, and I left with a crate of their delicious beer. The restaurant does good food including a tasty Belgian stew.

Review 22:The bathroom needs updating. The security door at the back of the hotel was open which meant people could walk in from the front of the building when the gate was open.

Review 23:Staying in an authentic working brewery where the excellent beer is on draught. Nice atmosphere, spacious room on ground floor. Ideal location for city centre. Restaurant menu seems popular although not used this time. Shop is always open to make purchases.

Review 24:Staff could be a bit more on top of things

Review 25:For beer enthusiast this is fantastic. Great homemade beer, whiskey and cheese. Food at the brasserie also very nice. Rooms are fine - nothings special.

Review 26:1- location not exactly centre if you are walking. 2- on a busy day like Sunday, you have to rush for breakfast, otherwise things finish. 3- rooms not deeply cleaned and very old.

Review 27:The reception staff were the only amazing part of the stay, the smile, ready to help and courteous.

Review 28:The only complaint I have was about the Wifi. The connection was a bit hit and miss. I managed to find a connection, not sure if this belonged to the hotel. I mentioned it at the reception at checkout, and they said that they were aware of the problem, and where working on it.

Review 29:The brasserie, good food, combined with the locally brewed beer.

Review 30:The fact that after several stays we had to show ID card again. We had booked with Booking.com and stayd in the past at least 6 times at this hotel. Before this was never necessary.

Review 31:We always had rooms very well suited for our dog. Restaurant and breakfast also welcomed the dog. Easy to have a drink and diner at the nearby restaurant.

Review 32:Some items need a face lift. The rooms are starting to show their age.No heat. The price is on the high side for the quality of the room. ButI'll stay there again............. I love the setting and "THEBEER"

Review 33:Second time I've stayed at this property. I stay here when I have anearly flight from bru Airport. One direct road to the highway and theninto the airport. You can't beet the setting. Directly in/on thebrewery grounds. Very secure parking directly in front of the hotel.Room was quiet and very comfortable. Plenty of hot water. Short walkinto the historic area of the city.

Review 34:Bar closing early, but there are lots of late open bars in the center of Mechelen.

Review 35:Perfect for a Brewery tour and a night out. Excellent restaurant and bar. The tour guide was great :)

Review 36:Never thought that I am going thirsty in a restaurant related to a brewery. The waiters were not too attentive.

Review 37:Friendly ladies at the welcome desk, nice spacious rooms, good food, Mechelen downtown just around the corner ... and the world's best lobby (assumed a passion for beer). Recommendable !!

Review 38:The bedrooms were a bit basic but perfectly acceptable.

Review 39:The location and staff were both great. The bar and restaurant were excellent and it was a good breakfast including cooked eggs and bacon which is better than the normal Belgian hotel breakfast. We did the brewery tour which was entertaining and included beer tasting at the end. Overall great value for money.

Review 40:The hotel was a little far from the train station. There was music playing in the hallway all night.

Review 41:The rooms were spacious and there was a good atmosphere. Good brasserie and wonderful breakfast.

Review 42:It was cold (and could have been raining!) for the outside walk from the room to the Brassiere to have breakfast. I didn't request a ground floor room and had a heavy case to take up the stairs.

Review 43:The position of the hotel and that I could park the car and the kitchen was open till 9pm.

Review 44:Bed was a little uncomfortable

Review 45:Location was excellent and easy to find. Breakfast ok and room was a good size for a single room. Vending machine had beer in - cool!

Review 46:Bar should be open longer especially on Saturday nights, even if it means opening one hour later. 2-2 would be my suggestion on Fri and Sat nights.

Review 47:The room was spacious and clean and bathroom, incuding shower, which in some places can be difficult, was excellent. Amazingly due to manouvres never had a drink at the brewery, very sad.

Review 48:Breakfast ok but nothing more We slept at one of the inside rooms and there was a lot of noise at night due to other guests having fun in the lobby hall

Review 49:It's also a brewery Cheap but still good Restaurant of hotel is good It's also a distillery Good location

Review 50:beds were not comfortible, 'sliding apart':-), nobody at the reception when we arrived - to check in you have to go to the restaurant if nobody is in the reception, there we waited quite a long time.

Review 51:location, restaurant with great food

Review 52:Unable to tour Brewery as there were no tours during the period of our stay.

Review 53:Central position for visiting Mechelen. Liked that we were close to working brewery. The shop is well stocked and the prices much better in comparison with shops in Brussels.

Review 54:the woman at the reception/shop was not very serviceminded she preferred her smartphone and was very difficult to get out of her chair :-( a shame for the rest of the personel who surdenly did their best

Review 55:everyone helpful exept

Review 56:The electricity went out as we were getting up

Review 57:Location was easily accessible close to city centre with good parking. the attached brasserie and brewery provided meals with good value and the beer was excellent. The breakfast was excellent.

Review 58:The rooms felt very industrial and dated. They could have been very charming due to the history of the brewery. The bathroom was quite dingy, and in need of a deep clean. The beds were two twins and when I went to move one, the dust was thick on the carpet, showing it hadn't been cleaned in a long time. The teapot was very soiled inside, unsuitable for use. We felt we were misled by the pictures on the internet.

Review 59:The front desk staff were both so very nice and accommodating. When I went to complain about the poor condition of the teapot, the gal brought me a pot of tea from the kitchen with all the fixings.the breakfast was very good.

Review 60:Close to a four-lane road, so impossible to sleep With an open window. When we closed it, everything was ok.

Review 61:Easy Access from motorway secure parking, and only a short walk from the main square! The bistro is great for evening meals, and the breakfast plentiful.

Review 62:Manager somewhat too busy. Our phone didn't work (although the barwas willing to allow us to use their phone). Limited outside parking.

Review 63:The room had a comfortable bed and shower and the room was quiet.Adjacent brewery and restaurant offered good food (excellent breakfast)and superb beer. Facility short walking distance to the central plazaand farmers market. Facility offered parking at a reasonable price (5euro per night).

Review 64:The Brewery was having some work done at the time of our visit.

Review 65:Good Location Parking available on site Friendly Staff Easy walking to sights and restaurants

Review 66:Breakfast was included in the price and was a very good start to the day. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Two excellent communal areas, which suited us well as a group.

Review 67:Very original accomodation, clean and in a very good position to visit Mechelen. Breakfast is served into the brewery restaurant , which is really nice and well furnished. On sunday there is the possibility to vistit the factory as well . We really enjoyed it.

Review 68:We went in a group of twelve; when we ate in the restaurant we were told that because there were so many of us we could only have three choices from the menu. Might be an idea to pre-order?

Review 69:The beer! The accommodation is great value and a nice breakfast.

Review 70:A few more hangers in the wardrobe would be useful, especially as there are no drawers for clothes. A lighter weight quilt would have been nice - but it was VERY warm!

Review 71:We've been here several times but this is the first under the new management. We enjoyed our visit; it was very hot and humid, even at night, so sleep was a bit of a problem-but that was just the weather. All the staff were very friendly and helpful.

Review 72:Old rooms. No air con and cannot open windows fully. Rooms definitely need some work and the lobby as well to make it look like a real hotel rather than "just rooms available in a brewery". Very unstable Wifi

Review 73:Original hotel inside the brewery. Nice brasserie and very nice staff. Safe and not too expensive car park.

Review 74:The room we stayed in was clean but a little tired in places. It could do with a little refurbishment.

Review 75:This is a nice friendly hotel within the boundary of the Het Anker brewery. The parking was good and it was a pleasant walk to the centre. Breakfast is good, and you can sit overlooking the brewery yard that (during the week) is busy creating the delightful beer. The brewery makes some very well known and good beers, and you can book spaces on tours on certain days. I would also recommend drinking and eating at the "brewery tap" on site so you can sample some of the local produce.

Review 76:When we arrived for the evening meal that we had booked we were told it was downstairs in what seemed to be a dark bar. When we asked to be in the large airy upstairs room we were grudgingly allowed however.

Review 77:The room was a very good size with a table and 4 chairs plus 2 arm chairs. The en-suite was also a good size. The breakfast was good and with lots of choice. The meal we had in the evening was good and we enjoyed the 4 beers that we tried.

Review 78:Great place! Rooms aren't fantastic, but they're fine and it is fantastic that they have rooms in an active brewery. Beer is top-notch, food is great. There's a beer vending machine. Enough said.

Review 79:Great hotel, brewery, beer shop and brasserie

Review 80:Great staff, unique property, excellent breakfast.

Review 81:Wifi connection problematic

Review 82:Sleeping in a brewery!

Review 83:Unfortunately, bar and reataurant was closed, and for a brewpub-hotel that is quite important!

Review 84:Location, great bar

Review 85:Great food and beer! Nice big rooms.

Review 86:Out side area not very clean

Review 87:The beer

Review 88:Location, value for money, breakfast

Review 89:Brasserie and Carolus Classic dark beer!

Review 90:Had to sleep with earplugs as a touch noisy. Wouldn't put me off going again.

Review 91:Location and Staff. Both excellent

Review 92:Comfortable rooms, good location, nice breakfasts.

Review 93:The beer and food obviously. The room was more than you could expect for the price

Review 94:The bedrooms could do with a freshen up with a new coat of paint

Review 95:The staff they were very friendly and welcoming

Review 96:Friendly staff; very good beer and food

Review 97:The hotel, the food and the beer.

Review 98:Carolus Classic, 8.5%. Vlaamse stoofje.

Review 99:Rooms need a renovation to boost up appeal

Review 100:Great location in the brewery, friendly staff, spacious rooms.

Review 101:Nice room but nothing special

Review 102:Great location, friendly staff and nifty to watch the activities of a brewery.

Review 103:Het huisbier (grapje).

Review 104:Kamer keurig, lunch goed en ontbijt lekker.

Review 105:Quite basic rooms, but adequate. Receptionist on check-in was lovely, but receptionist in morning quite abrupt.

Review 106:poor quality of the internet!

Review 107:I liked the breakfast.

Review 108:Arrived latish on a Sunday and there was only Macdonalds open for food.

Review 109:Short distance out of Brussells Lovely location Beautiful brewery

Review 110:To stay a working brewery always interesting

Review 111:Very good dinner and breakfast Brewery atmosphere Safe parking

Review 112:the convenience of being just off the motorway but 5 minutes walk away from Mechelen centre.

Review 113:Bathroom a bit smelly

Review 114:Quirky but interesting site

Review 115:Rooms are rather plain. On the other hand, everything worked well. The brewery and rooms are 5-10 minutes' walk from the city centre, so people need to plan accordingly.

Review 116:Front desk and cleaning staff were extremely helpful and cheerful. Lots of history and novelty about staying within an old, but functioning, brewery.

Review 117:When in Mechelen this hotel is my favourite because of its brasserie with good food and the breweries famous beers. HOWEVER THE HOTEL ROOMS ARE IN NEED OF REFURBISHMENT , the price asked does no longer correspond with today's expectation.

Review 118:The accommodation is part of the Gouden Carolus brewery which has great beer served in a lovely bar. They also serve excellent food. Our room was very spacious and clean. I noticed other reviewers complained about the reliability and speed of the wifi but this must now be sorted as I was getting a very fast connection. The staff were extremely friendly and there is private parking on site.

Review 119:the Christmas ale, at 10.5% and the 12th drink it was a little too much ;)

Review 120:Staff were excellent, all beers served in the bar, we tried them all, excellent. You don't need to go far as it has everything, good food, and a good selection of beers. Location if about a 5 minute walk from the market square which has more places to eat if you wish. Bed's were comfy, and room was clean, all in all, not the cheapest hotel I've stayed at, but you get what you pay for. Quiet location.

Review 121:The bathroom. The train-station is on the other side of the town.

Review 122:The excellent heating. A good spacious bed, with nice sheet and quilt. The fact that you are actually staying in a fully functional brewery with some of the best beer in the world.

Review 123:all the rest. This place just sucks. poor, smelly rooms, although cleaned they look still dirty and extremely basic. I have been a customer here for many nights but they do not take care for any attempt to make a 100+ nights a year person feel welcome (except the front desk ladies). No good word for their backoffice support...and not 1 single occasion but time after time. they for sure have lost a valuable costumer now and I advise all to stay away..there are better alternatives nearby.

Review 124:ladies from the front desk

Review 125:what not? a list: no/poor internet connection, have to go outside, climb some stairs and go into another building to reset the modem, to have some flake reception. When you file a complaint (not the first time) there is no response at all. When asking why there is no response, again: no response. At least I thought they would compensate, but they just do not care. Furthermore: large rooms but completely desolate, cleaned though (although last time there were other peoples socks near my bed) but stained. Probably they did not renovate in 25 years. Very oldfashioned. Sinks not working, shower curtain, switches broken, 1 poor electrical socket (either for a lamp or laptop, both is impossible), phone to call reception is dead, furniture small, not comfortable, old, stained. I could go on and on, but my main message would be: stay away from this hotel. They do not invest a single penny in maintenance or improvement (not since the invention of the CD) and when filing complaints about services you paid for but not delivered, they just do not take care to even respond (multiple occasions). For this money you can get better value. Try: 3 paardekens (centre), hobbit (off centre), malcot (off centre) or holiday inn (centre).

Review 126:The staff is friendly, tries to help, but their hands are tied, since their management and support is unwilling to help them do their job

Review 127:Nothing really, I will stay at this property again as mentioned.

Review 128:Great hotel! If you are a beer fan and love history, this is the hotel for you. Rooms are located right on the brewery grounds. The beer is excellent and the rooms are very good. All of the hotel staff I spoke excellent English. All the staff were VERY helpful. The “sign in” arrangements are a little strange but there is very good signage posted on how things work. Great staff and secured parking. Less than a 10 minute walk to the historic city center. Less than a 15 minute drive to the Brussels airport. I’m returning to Brussels in a few months and will stay there again.

The Fine Print

Please note that check-in is at the Brewery Het Anker from 12 p.m. until 11 p.m.
