Chalet Relogio sells fast on our site. Historical mansion Chalet Relogio was designed by Italian architect Luigi Manini, who also planned the Escala in Milan. The hotel features rustic accommodations over looking Sintra’s Valley and the Moorish castle.
All of Relogio’s rooms feature recessed, paneled windows with internal shutters. Parquet floors covered with tapestries and wooden furnishings provide a historic feel to the rooms. Some rooms also feature a fireplace.
When the weather allows, breakfast can be enjoyed on the balcony over the grounds, taking in the view of the Hill of the Moon (Mount Sintra). Afterwards, the grounds invites for a walk on the property.
Chalet Relogio is located within a 5 minute drive from the train station, within one mile of the historic Pena Palace. It is half a mile to the historic center of Sintra, and parking and Wi-Fi are both free of charge.

Reviews for Chalet Relogio

Review 1:Lovely old homely place a short drive out of Sintra's centre. A warm welcome and a cosy room accompanied by a good, varied breakfast. Just a little too far to walk back into the town but free parking was a big bonus.

Review 2:The house itself needs some mainteinance work (bed, uncornfortable bathroom and common space/living room). Breakfast ok

Review 3:nice location in the middle of the wood, nice room with view on the green and the castle

Review 4:Lovely property with view of the Moorish Castle, good value, free parking, good breakfast (including a to-go package the day we had to leave before breakfast hours). A 45-minute hike to the Moorish castle.

Review 5:The house has a musty smell but it could be due to the age of the building. The following remark is not a critique - more of a suggestion. As breakfast is not served until 8.45 AM I would suggest putting electric water kettles in the rooms with packages of coffee, sugar, tea and milk for guests who wish to have their coffee sooner than 8.45 AM.

Review 6:Very nice Bed and Breakfast in a lovely home. I would suggest having a car for the hike back up from Sintra town center for more mature clients but I saw a bus stop near the house so this is not a negative point. The owner is very welcoming and the housekeeper is a sweetheart!!! VERY clean rooms which are maintained daily. Good breakfast although maybe hard boiled eggs could be included in the buffet. Biggie the dog is a HIT!!!!! So friendly!! She is like the house mascot and loves to bring you her toys. There is a room with comfortable sofas, fireplace and large screen TV at guests' disposal. The large patio must be a great place to chill after a day of sight seeing in the warmer months. Great view of the Mouros Castle which is nicely illuminated at night.

Review 7:Nothing really. A bit far out of town and on a steep hill, so maybe not suited to everybody.

Review 8:Friendly owner and staff. Was a unique establishment, not a large company clone.

Review 9:We could hear guests in the next room talking, using the bathroom, etc. Water stayed for a long time in the shower tray, not drainging quickly enough, but the owner explained it was due to inadecuate pipe dimensions. There was also a severe fog/condensation problem in the bathroom (cold outdoors, warm and moist air indoors, no ventilation in the bathroom).

Review 10:It is an exciting old mansion, full of character. Serene location close to the hitorical part of Sintra (5 min walking, downhill from the hotel and uphill on the way back, but the gradient is not too steep). Good breakfast with an assortment of local cakes. Complementary parking on the property. The owners were helpful and willing to accomodate our early departure.

Review 11:Staff very friendly and helpful. Environment very cozy and comfortable. Very good breakfast. Great location for visiting both the historic center of Sintra and the Pena Palace / Moorish Castle. One of my favorite places. Thank you.

Review 12:We simply loved it! Wonderful experience - to live in such a beautiful house with such a long story behind. The owners were very nice. The breakfast - perfect! Rich and tasty. Beautiful view on the castle outside. Very stylish and peaceful place. We went there out-of-the-season and managed to get a very reasonable price so I simply did not expect such a luxury for that ;) Thank you for making our stay in Sintra such a special experience!

Review 13:this was one of the best places i have ever stayed at. it was very, very clean and very comfortable. sintra gets quite cold at night and it was wonderful to come home to a warm, cozy and clean place. also the breakfast was great! we looked forward to waking up every day and having it.

Review 14:Old chalet, so expect wood skreaking.

Review 15:Excellent location and gorgeous setting. The owner welcomed us and took us to our family suite, which was clean and very comfortable. It is located at no more than 3-5 minutes from Sintra's places to visit.

Review 16:House was full of character but was warm and very comfortable. The staff were friendly and welcoming. It was not too far to walk into town for dinner.

Review 17:We are senior women and were surprised by all the stairs. Had we arrived when the host and hostess were there it wouldn't have been a problem as they more than willing to help carry bags. The employee there was nice but didn't have much English nor did she offer help or encourage us to wait.

Review 18:This a very well cared for home that is nicely decorated and very inviting. It is very close to town and has easy parking. The breakfast was very nice in a lovely setting.

Review 19:The establishment was beautiful in a beautiful setting - the room was impeccably clean and the staff was extremely helpfull - lovedelicous small buffet for breakfastand they had a cute dog too - short walk to superb dining experience - Donna Maria - Monika/Germany - Cathy/CanadaWe loved it

Review 20:Breakfast only served from 9 - 10 am, which was a bit late / inflexible in my opinion. The room was a little bit musty - humid.

Review 21:Very dramatic hotel, nice large room with high ceilings. Comfortable bed. Good breakfast. Great value for money. Beautiful views, plenty of parking.

Review 22:Its quite , nearby some main atractions like Quinta da Regaleira and Palacio Nacional Sintra and about 60 min by foot to other main atraction like Palacio da Pena , Convento Capuchos , Castelo Mouros . Cozy for a short breakout .

Review 23:Pay in cash sometimes isn't comfortable

Review 24:Really the best place to stay in Sintra: down from mountain close to the historical center of city, very quite place during night and day time, very familiar attention to guests. I recommend this place for 100%

Review 25:Beautiful breakfast on the terrace with superb view of the Moorish Castle. Perfect tranquil location, yet easy access to town for dinner. Friendly family run place. Terrific.

Review 26:Nothing.

Review 27:Jeroen and his wife were very kind and helpful. We had a large comfortable room for our 5 night stay. Excellent breakfast, a good choice of fresh fruit, good quality bread, cheese, ham etc.

Review 28:Excellent place for people who love authenticity and home atmosphere. Owner very professional, welcoming. He can recommend an excellent local restaurant which one is unlikely to find on the web.

Review 29:Very nice surrounding, interesting (historical) building located very close to Regaleira complex and the Sintra city center as well. Owner very kind and helpfull, having interesting stories to tell if asked. Moreover it's just next to the Villa Biester !!! - if you've watched The Ninth Gate ....

Review 30:not bad, but would be lovely if there were some bikes ... and maybe a scooter for getting up to the palace. (kidding on that one)

Review 31:Biggie (the friendly dog) & her owner & the friendly service team. The lovely room & breakfast. The charming environment. We loved our hikes, too, though less in shape people will want a car since it's a bit of an uphill climb from town. :-)

Review 32:I'm not sure it lived up to the convenient location that the description Implied. We had to walk a good way down a very narrow road to the town center before we could get on any of thr tourist busses.

Review 33:We had a perfectly delightful stay at Chalet Relogio. It is abeautifully kept historical home and our conversations with the owner reflected a true love of the property. Views from the property werewonderful.

Review 34:The room had no en suite and the bathroom was along a corridor. The bedroom was very basic. The hotel is situated up a very steep hill and difficult to locate even using a GPS You can walk downhill to Sintra in 20 minutes but not possible to walk back at night up the steep and unlit hill. the taxi I used for my return journey was very expensive for a 5 minute trip!

Review 35:It is charming house with a lovely sitting room and the breakfast was very good

Review 36:The walk into Sintra is along a hazardous road - it's fine in daylight, but after dark you would need a taxi.

Review 37:Wonderfully quirky accommodation, with great views of the Moorish Castle. Very good buffet breakfast included in the rate and the free, private parking is a great bonus in this town.

Review 38:Beautiful place just outside Sintra. Very nice owners. Magical atmosphere in a renovated manor house. Lovely garden and view from windows. Rich breakfast

Review 39:The bathroom/restroom is outside of your room. It's still OK because you don't share it with other guests, but it still feels awkward to go out in the middle of the night to visit the restroom :)

Review 40:A very romantic place with an exclusive atmosphere

Review 41:Beautiful house, great location but we arrived late at night and kept driving past the entrance as it's on a steep winding road. If you are driving up the hill, look out for the Chalet Relogio sign, its on a bend and will be on your right hand side! The owners are a lovely family. Breakfast is great. Would stay here again :)

Review 42:At the same time that the house has a beautiful outside architecture, there's no much inside. Rooms are very noise, we could hear other people cough in other rooms throughout the night, floor made a lot of noise. Breakfast consisted of pastries and sweet cereal. I dont eat sugar or gluten, so didnt have an option. And its fairly outside of town.

Review 43:The house is beautiful. Made by the same architect that built the Quinta da Regaleira, it was really nice to be able to stay at this place.

Review 44:Stayed for two nights. The house is located a little away from the centre in a quiet and secluded location. Has its own Parking. Clean and comfortable rooms. Great Breakfast. Very attentive to the guests of the hotel owner.

Review 45:Terms ideally situated in a beautiful location on a mountain streamer near the castle and Sintra Quiet, calm, cozy as in the old castle. The helpful and friendly owner Jeroen kindly helped with reservation in Sintra restaurant for our anniversary I want to recommend this hotel as a place where you can switch from the bustle of tourists and enjoy the quiet and comfort in a beautiful location. Special thanks to Jeroen for their assistance. The own Parking.

Review 46:Excellent location in Sintra and stunning views. The chalet is in a very good spot not far from the bus stop to take you to the palace etc and can easily walk down to the bustling square at the bottom. The rooms are beautifully decorated. The walk through the park to the palace is lovely and the palace it's self is amazing like something from a movie!

Review 47:A little bit 'old' smell in the house, no elevator.

Review 48:Charming big old house located in the mountainside/ forest between Sintra town and the Pena castle/ mourish castle. Nice big family room with two separate bedrooms. Good breakfast. Easy parking outside.

Review 49:We loved the place. Perfect view from the upper room window. The owner made a special effort to supply our vegan daughter with soy milk etc. Very friendly pets, too!

Review 50:The room was advertised as having a view. It was at the top of three flights of stairs (no lift), dark, and had only two small windows. One had to stand on the bed to see the view. Paying in cash was inconvenient. Facilities to make tea and coffee would have been nice.

Review 51:The location was convenient for the castle and palace. The breakfast was very good. There was parking.

Review 52:Attentive staff. Housekeeper and owner (Jerome) got us a much needed power converter. We left ours at the last hotel. Upon our return from Pena Palace, there was one on the side table to use during our stay.

Review 53:liked everything

Review 54:Enchanted, well preserved old chalet with an interesting history. Quiet location, full of character. The service is personal, friendly and very warm. Thomas made every effort to ensure a pleasant hospitality. We even had soy milk for breakfast to cater for our restrictions.

Review 55:Owner's son is not very friendly: we called to announce a late arrival, no one answered but he scolded us for waking him up; rooms are not at the same level compared to the the outside appearance.

Review 56:fabulous location, great architecture of this mini-castle, very cosy breakfast room.

Review 57:The stairs is very antique and a little bit noisy - when other guests come down or up, you can hear every their step.

Review 58:It was wonderful - living in the hotel that was built about a century or more ago. The view of the castle from our balcony was marvellous! Also we appreciated very warm approach to guests, all our requests have been immediately done. And our impression was completed by lively and lovely puppy and cat, who live in the hotel.

Review 59:The chalet is beautiful, and in a prime spot with a view of the castle. It is a little walk out of the town but quieter and the building is lovely and unusual so we didn't mind. You can sit out on the terrace for breakfast which is great, and the host was really friendly and helpful.

Review 60:Drink your morning coffee on the patio with a view of castle ruins in the distance.... Low key place where the host/owner who also lives at the chalet greets all his guests at breakfast to ask if they need anything for their day etc. You are on your own for the rest of the day after that. He is very nice and printed a train schedule for the next leg of my trip.

Review 61:The road to Town is realy narrow, so be careful if you are Walking.

Review 62:I've stayed in quite a couple of hotels, and this is deffinatly one of my favorites. The welcomming feeling we got from the personal. The calm location near the Town center.

Review 63:Some elements in the room were not from the same style as house itself and were therefore a small but concrete minuses.

Review 64:Soul of the house Surroundings

Review 65:The cosy and easy atmosphere in the house, charming furniture and nice wall decoration, the funny young dog and the hospitality of the owner and his son.

Review 66:Last moment booking and we were nicely surprised. Room was nice (although from our window the view wasn't the best). Really close to Pena Palace and Moorish Castle and walking distance to Sintra historical centrum. Breakfast was nice - buffet with some variety of cheeses, hams, fruits, caked ...

Review 67:THERE IS NOT ANY ELEVATOR. IT WOULD BE DIFFICULT FOR OLD TRAVELLERS. BUT FOR THE YOUTH IT DOSEN'T MATTER.

Review 68:WONDERFULLY BEARKFAST AND FRIENDLY STAFF. PEACEFULLY PLEACE WITH A SILENT TERRACE.

Review 69:nothing, it was really nice

Review 70:The owner was very friendly, and gave us helpful suggestions for visiting the area. The breakfast is excellent and copious. House is clean comfortable, rooms are spacious, with high ceilings. Nice garden, very quiet and at walking distance from downtown. Warning: owner changed about 1 year ago so don't be discouraged by the ancient reviews that say it is not clean. The house is very clean and renovated

Review 71:A minor inconvenience just for smokers, you have to go all the way downstairs to smoke a cigarrete.

Review 72:The owner is the nicest person, the welcoming and all the availability from the staff was 5*

Review 73:wifi worked well, but sometimes just not made it until the room.

Review 74:The building is great. After visiting the palaces in Sintra, you can also sleep in one. Recently renovated. Warm welcome by the owner.

Review 75:Old building, WiFi does not reach all rooms. (Could be easily fixed with a few repeaters)

Review 76:Very friendly owner, very charming location and building. Lots of atmosphere. Good breakfast. Highly recommended.

Review 77:Lack of elevator for upper floors. Have to be willing to carry luggage. We (2 people, 67 and 73) managed to do so. Younger folks would not have problems

Review 78:Good location from main attractions. Old unique mansion. Clean and functional.

Review 79:The owner said he didn't accept credit cards when we arrived. When we booked it definitely said they were accepted. We would have paid cash if we had enough, but in the end they took our visa.

Review 80:Beautiful hotel with character. Great continental breakfast.

Review 81:Only thing we didn't like, which can easily be remedied, was the darkness of the room. There were only two small windows, which was ok, since it was in the roof area, but the bulb of the main light was very dim. To see enough we had to put on both bedside lamps as well, even during daytime. A stronger bulb with a brighter lampshade would easily remedy that.

Review 82:It's a picturesque house, easy to find if you just follow the signs for the Moorish castle. The staff was very attentive and helpful. Liked the breakfast buffet and the character of the house.

Review 83:Fantastic place, just in the middel of the Sintra region. Very close to all the beautiful Places. The owner and his son was spoiling me from the moment i arrived to the minut i left. I will alway go back to the place :-)

Review 84:A bit cold in the room, but it s normal for Portugal, I think.

Review 85:We stayed in this hotel for one night. 1. It s very convenient if you travel by car, because it is located close to the main road (but in the city centre), though parking costs 18 euro, but we arrived on Sunday and left the car till 8 am in the street for free, then we payed each 2h. 2. We had very cosy room with small yard, 2. simple but nice breakfast with fresh orange juice. We were very pleased by cakes and fruits and tea available for free 24h. Very very friendly reception!

Review 86:Our second visit was even more pleasant that the former and we stayed for two nights this time. Nice owner, ample breakfast, perfect location on a hill overlooking Sintra with a view of the Moorish castle from the windows of our bedroom. If you plan to visit Sintra's palaces and quintas it is your chance to actually live in one of them at a reasonable price.

Review 87:Jeroen's hospitality was great! The breakfasts were delicious and there was a lot of variety. The location was perfect and was within walking distance to many sights. Our stay in Sintra was amazing! We want to go back there in the summertime. We highly recommend this Bed & Breakfast!

Review 88:Great location in a beautiful environment, but do take note it's a 15 minute walk to the nearest restaurant if you don't have a car.

Review 89:Amazing room & house interior. Friendly staff.

Review 90:Loved every minute.

Review 91:Location. Chalet was easily accessible by car or on foot. Although on foot with luggage if travelling by train might be a challenge, but doable. Hospitality excellent. Close to good restaurants and bars. Easy access to sightseeing. Would return in a heartbeat.

Review 92:Like I said, the couple travelling with us had some problem with noise (which really isn't the chalet's fault) and some ants in their bedroom.

Review 93:The house is very charming and in keeping with the overall feel of Sintra. It was very well renovated, our bedroom was huge and extremelly clean. They got us a cot for our toddler and we had a lovely night. Breakfast was good, and the owner was very pleasant and helpful. The other couple trabelling with us had a very different opinion of the place due to some very noisy people in the room next door and a problem with some ants. But our experience was amazing and I definitely recommend.

Review 94:The charms of an ancient building [very well redecorated and maintained] might be a bit altered by the no-sound -proof walls ... (and of course if one could hear the neighbors...it might gives at time uneasy feelings ). But a pair of ear-plugs may solve this ...

Review 95:The owner and his son are excellent persons , caring and attentive to make their guests feel at home and at ease . The breakfast is a feast , the decoration is generated by artistic and beautiful tastes.

Review 96:Can't say a bad thing about it. It would be helpful if Sintra had identification on roads that was more clear- but that is no reflection on the lodging.

Review 97:The hosts are charming and extremely helpful.

Review 98:Nothing to dislike!

Review 99:Where to start? The setting - up a steep winding climb towards the magnificent castle, the Chalet Relogio sits in its own grounds, and is quite wonderful inside, beautifully refurnished and full of character. A wonderful view from bedroom windows, a huge comfortable bed, and interesting decor made this a very different experience from the usual hotel stay. A large log fire in the guests' sitting room made for a cosy evening in mid-December. The host was so helpful and kind, allowing us to leave our car for the two days we spent in Lisbon. A lovely contrast to our city and seaside stays, and one which we hope to repeat.

Review 100:No complaints.

Review 101:Beautiful property and excellent treatment from the owner. Evenings by the fire in the sitting room so nice. Shower hot, breakfast great with a good variety.

Review 102:The breakfast was excellent Our room was perfect The hotel was just a bit different from the usual hotels we stayed in and the owner was extremely friendly and his son made us very welcome. We would recommend this hotel and would love to go back

Review 103:The Chalet was a beautiful building with antique furniture and plenty of space. The host was very friendly and helpful too. The bed was large and comfortable and we all had a good nights sleep.

Review 104:a lit far from the center if you don't have a car.

Review 105:good breakfast with warm bread, near the castelo dos mouros and the castelo de la pena, very relaxing.

Review 106:Jeroen welcomed us with a glass of port at the fireplace. The house is decorated with good taste, matching the romantic atmosphere of the old villa. On warm summer days it must be fantastic to sit and relax at the terrace, from where you can see the Moorish castle.

Review 107:Everything. Spectacular building, with a cozy and local flair, on lovely grounds with a spectacular view to the Moorish Castle. Great breakfast; owners are helpful and engaging.

Review 108:We stayed here for two nights during our "Road Trip" and when we arrived my immediate reaction was "What have we here?" The Chalet itself is stunning in architectural design and could well be (in my opinion) a great place for a film shoot. It is located part way up a steep hill, which takes to you to the Moors Castle. Jerome, an affable and very helpful owner who has many years experience in the leisure industry, met us. So believe me, when I suggest that his Chalet and his attentiveness to his guests will not go unnoticed. He placed us on the third floor in a room, which for me was just right. It was noticeable during the evening and at night just how quiet the area is. Breakfast s the standard European continental breakfast. There is a lounge in the hotel where you can sit and watch some TV, or if Jerome is there he will no doubt chat to you. Cheers. Great hotel, great manager and great location; all the best to you Jerome.

Review 109:We had the room upstairs with small windows and not much place to turn around. As we were not lucky with the weather it was cold and damp in the room. Breakfast good but basic, hot meals (just omelette or sausages) could be an option.

Review 110:Very kind and helpful hosts, even took us to the train station when we went to Lisbon. Beautiful romantic villa with wide garden on the foot of the Pena palace and Moorish castle hill, nice interior with ancient details. About 15 minutes to the Sintra centre by foot.

Review 111:The owner was extremely hospitable, catered even to food allergy, friendly and happy to help however possible. No complaints or concerns recommending this place.

Review 112:I always wish for luggage racks and rarely find them!

Review 113:This chalet is in a beautiful setting above the town of Sintra. We stayed in the tower on the 3rd floor which has an amazing view of the Moorish Castle. The room is large and comfortable, a bit shabby chic. Bathroom was fine though small. Breakfast was best selection of ripe fruits and breads and pastries...all delicious!

Review 114:The shower needs a cabin.

Review 115:Wonderful and quiet location in the middle of the woods. The house was recently refurbished and has a very pleasant atmosphere. The owner and the staff were very gentle. Comfortable beds and good breakfast (included).

Review 116:a bit difficult to find, especially in dark old fashioned bathroom (but I liked it :)

Review 117:An old estate in a beautiful garden, very quite location, furnished with antiques, very cosy atmosphere, good breakfast, nice service

Review 118:The walk back from town after dark.

Review 119:We stayed here with our 5 year in a triple room. The room was lovely and comfortable and very clean. The breakfast was also very good, a nice selection of different foods and as much as you wanted. The owners were very friendly and helpful. The only down side was the walk back up from town after dark, this was a bit of a problem with a 5 year old. Its only a 10 min walk but there are no pavements and bits of the road aren't lit, thankfully its not too busy. You can take a taxi or drive however so its a very manageable downside.

The Fine Print
