Reviews for The Godley Hotel
Review 1:Each bed had the electronic blanket, but the code was too short and couldn't reach to the switch, wasnt sure if its just a show off or to be 'actually' used.
Review 2:Lots of people were saying its an horrible hotel. So I was only staying for a night at Tekapo. Bue when i got there, wow. My room had own bath tub. The hotel has swimming / hot pool(good and clean). The room was nice, and take only 1 min to the church. Have nice view.
Review 3:The afternoon staff were less than helpful and out of their depth. We asked a simple question about breakfast which he couldn't answer correctly and struggled to understand or speak English. It would appear that the staff are more interested in the overseas visitors and not the local visitor. We will not stay at the hotel again.
Review 4:The view over the lake
Review 5:We had budget rooms which were not value for money. No windows. No fans. Taps wouldn't turn off Very dark and dingy. The worst accommodation in 8 nights.
Review 6:Staff and location were ok
Review 7:Location but nothing else
Review 8:Hotel room is so old; bathroom has bad and old fittings; shower water temperature can b adjusted properly.; sink with dirty stains; no free wifi in room and only available at reception. Most definitely overpriced
Review 9:The room we were in 2019 was very musty. The smell was overpowering. They must have a leak or mould issue in the shower area.
Review 10:Location was great & was only rooms available in tekapo.
Review 11:This is the oldest room I have ever stayed in my life. I know it's a budget room but the pool situation of this room is still out of imagination. Most of the other rooms have been renovated except this one and the one next to us. I think if you have such a terrible room, you should not open it to the public. Even though this hotel is close to Lake Tekapo, most of their room don't have lake view. Think twice before you book in.
Review 12:The room is horrible and bathroom disgusting. Run down is the only thing that comes to mind. The rest of the town was booked but will never stay there again.
Review 13:Nothing
Review 14:Toilet has very strange smell. They have got the loudest fridge. The place is very old but they charge you the premium price. Overall the facility is poorly managed and lots of things will need to be fixed.
Review 15:Location is good.
Review 16:The water pressure in the shower wasn't brilliant, and the free wifi didn't reach our room (though paid wifi was available). The amazing view from the window was spoilt somewhat by some diggers and other equipment on a construction site directly between our room and the lake (though a 30 second walk took us past this to the lake shore!).
Review 17:Breakfast was great, as were the location and size of the room. The bed was very comfortable and all the staff we encountered were incredibly helpful and friendly. The overall experience of staying here was excellent and we would certainly visit again!
Review 18:balcony of the all rooms are connected. it's quite stuffy if you close the doors as there are no windows in the room.
Review 19:Very nice location - just 5 mins walking distance from the Church of Good Shepherd and next to the Kohan restaurant
Review 20:When we arrived the lady at reception was fairly sour and not welcoming at all. We paid a premium for a lake view room and was not told that there was construction going on outside, so all we could see was a digger and construction work. It would have been polite to have been informed about this, or we should have been allowed to pay a standard room rate. The hotel pool was green and not useable.
Review 21:We liked how central the hotel was and how easy it was to find. The room was very clean and comfortable. Breakfast was nice.
Review 22:Unit is old and had problem with the entrance door and window but it doesn't bother us.
Review 23:Very good location, restaurants and supermarkets within few minutes walk. Good view of lake tekapo except there was some construction going on in front of unit.
Review 24:Poor service provided by staff Only lobby can access wifi Room is too old, door of bathroom is broken. Renovation is required. It is not worth paying for such poor service and old room.
Review 25:Only good location
Review 26:The price of any lodgings in Tekapo is much higher than anywhere else innz. There's little need for anyone to compete, so they're notreally renovating anything. For the quoted price, you expect more modernhotel. Still, if you are in Tekapo and you're worried aboutinterior, you're missing the point ;)
Review 27:The place is pretty old, but very functional and clean. The staff isincredible.
Review 28:facilities in the bathroom, bathtub is too high, is quite danger when you want to get in or out, especially get out from the bathtub, easy to get fall down when your foot is wet
Review 29:Hotel room needs a big makeover, everything seems to be outdated and very unhygienic toilet & bathroom.
Review 30:Location was the only good thing about this place
Review 31:Dirty carpet, holes in wall, we could hear all the conversations next door and we could SMELL when they went to the toilet!!! Promise of movie at front destroy but decoder not able to do this.
Review 32:Position was stunning. Staff were friendly
Review 33:The bathrooms are very adequate albeit dated, but the sowers need maintenance as wall board has broken and rotted. This could not be hygienically cleand.
Review 34:Value for money was excellent. Breakfast was good value also
Review 35:- 2 lights in the room were not wokring - thermostat in the room did not seem to be working - low pressure of water in the shower
Review 36:- Receptionist was at work earlier than the stipulated time. - tv was working
Review 37:Advertised as budget rooms. Ours was disgusting in that the bathroom was in a dreadful state especially the shower. Was told on complaining that it was classed as a battered room but this does not show when rooms in budget category are advertised online. How can Health Authority allow these to be rented. Other standard rooms looked good.
Review 38:Situation very good
Review 39:the place needs to have a major overall/revamp, room had major cracks in walls, paint job was appalling, tiles coming away from wall, furniture and fittings are worn and old, not value for money at all
Review 40:Sam was a delight (restaurant), the view from the room was lovely, comfy bed
Review 41:The hotel is run down. Loose floor tiles between restaurant and reception which is a liability issue. We paid more for this room than any other accommodation in 3 weeks of travel and it was the worse.
Review 42:View of the lake from our room.
Review 43:No parking. Had to park on the street and a car reversed into my car damaging the front...obviously not the hotel's fault but not happy.
Review 44:In the middle of town, big comfy bed, simple room but has everything you need
Review 45:Just a little tired
Review 46:The only thing that I can see it needs a little bit of a few updates to bring it to the present day and the future but on the whole. .ok
Review 47:Walls of the room were painted block work, wall between room and corridor was plasterboard which did nothing to insulate us from the noise in the corridor. The main bone of contention was the Basin in the bathroom which was filthy and had damage from cigarette burns, speaking to a cleaner she said she had tried to clean it but was unable to. This was not recent damage it had been there for a long time, the Basin could and should have been replaced. Speaking to the staff their attitude was its a budget room what do you expect. We were in New Zealand for 4 weeks staying in 18 different rooms at more or less the same cost as the Godley's nearly all of them were immaculate, if all the rest can do it why cant the Godley ? They obviously don't care !
Review 48:The service, we arrived at 1.39pm book in was 2pm my parter was very sick I went to reception and ask if the room ready and that my parter was very sick the guy behind the counter said not ready so I went back at 1.50 and sorry still not ready at this stage I was getting annoyed so we went in at 2 and he had to check even then to see if it was ready and it was only I find this complex should be a 2 star and really only good for backpackers and bus tour For where the location is in tekapo this should be a 1st class hotel and staff there should go to customer service school
Review 49:The view to lake
Review 50:We stayed in room 218 for two nights. Hotel is very dated - rooms are just OK but bathroom is a disgrace. We as New Zealanders were embarrassed that tourists were being offered such outdated accommodation and it showed on their faces as they got off the buses before they had even seen the bathrooms. Get your act together and spend some of the profits to upgrade or demolish and rebuild. If you can't do that get out and let someone else build a resort that would suit this spot. Car parks are also third rate with broken seal etc.
Review 51:Our room was awful cigarette burns in hand basin ,curtains had holes due to old age ,facility's old and dated.
Review 52:The staff were very helpful but limited in what they could do.
Review 53:the size of the tvs are shocking shocking shocking!very dated building inside and out ..bit of paint etc would do wonders ,but the price is ok.
Review 54:although bland looking..very well cooked and tasy meal (meat the sea).awesome being able to walk out your front door to lake views!!
Review 55:Shower facility was disappointing. Check out was at 10am and at 1015 am housekeeping was loudly knocking on our door literally chasing us out - using unprofessional swear words.
Review 56:Location was good.
Review 57:The shower over the bath was dangerous as the bottom of the bath was very narrow and spongy. There were cigarette burns in the hand basin. The chair in the room was grubby. Needs refurbishing.
Review 58:Staff were lovely. The place was nicely located. The linen was lovely and fresh and clean. The decor was very dated.
Review 59:The bathroom was a little tired but clean and user friendly so not a problem
Review 60:Great location in the heart of town. Shops, restaurants and cafes on the doorstop. Short walk to lake. Swimming pool and spa. I had problems with my mob during my stay and the staff went out of their way to help. Good value, great people.
Review 61:Very dated fixtures and fittings (e.g. the bedside console with PYE controls, I assume for a long-defunct television setup). TV reception is fuzzy on all channels so the current TV wasn't much use to us, not that the five terrestrial channels on offer were very tempting anyway. Shower head fixed into the wall is so low that hair-washing requires an awkward crouch and the shower itself was tiny with a curtain that likes to stick to your legs. Electronic room keys kept locking us out and we'd have to go back to reception to get them reset - luckily we noticed during office hours each time but we could easily have been locked out.
Review 62:Great location that really could not be more central, friendly staff, clean rooms. Hot water was very hot. Electric blanket on the bed was a welcome addition! Furniture was comfortable despite showing its age a bit.
Review 63:The hotel is very old and not well kept at all. The lobby area is nice enough but, it does not reflect the rest of the hotel. The room is old fashioned but clean. However, it is the condition of the bathroom that remind us of horror movie with stains and peel floor tire.
Review 64:The location and lower price than others.
Review 65:The shower was an absolute joke. Nothing more than a trickle of water. Cleanliness could have been better - stray hairs in the bathroom, rubbish bin wasn't properly emptied from last occupants. Duvet cover non-existant just bed cover, sheet and thin blanket. Felt far too much like we were sleeping in someone else's leftover bed. VERY expensive for what we got.
Review 66:The view was lovely, beds comfortable and plenty of storage. Room was serviced between days.
Review 67:They really need to upgrade the showers and basins.
Review 68:Everything was perfect except for the Bathroom facilities. They really need to upgrade the showers and basins.
Review 69:Decor needs modernising, felt it was stuck in the seventies. Room was a bit cramped with two additional single beds. Hotel foyer area needs modernising to be made more accomodating.
Review 70:Location, comfy beds.
Review 71:Dirty room and bathroom. No shower working. No alternative shower offered when notified staff. No compensation offered. No car park. Why ask in booking if not available? Very old decor.
Review 72:My room next to 24hrs entry door and the door shut so loud can't sleep all night. Interior are aging. But all clean as should be.
Review 73:Price and location everything is good as motel should have.front girl were nice,
Review 74:Our room was substandard. Ripped curtain in lounge and motley shower curtain, dripping taps over bath and basin, stained hand basin - should have been replaced years ago. Threadbare carpet. Bed old and saggy.
Review 75:Loved our look around Tekapo and meal at local Japanese restaurant, and good breakfast at local bakery.
Review 76:Budget room so very worn, specifically very poor shower, badly marked wash hand basin; some lights not working & kettle element partially coroded, leaving particles in the boiled water.
Review 77:Convenient location; room adequate, lounge pleasant; staff freindly & at times very helpful
Review 78:The room is so dirty and not clean. Not good smell in the towel... No window in the room... My room is near the exit door...and everyone pass it at night... So noisy when closed the door. I can't sleep all night.
Review 79:No paper available for units. Pathetic water pressure. Verandah railing doesn't meet current safety standards. Bed quite hard. Furnishings quite dated and worn.
Review 80:Great view. Unit nice and cleaqn
Review 81:I should have read more reviews before I booked this. Needs renovating. Unusual these days to have to pay a fee for Visa and MasterCard use, and no free wi fi included even though the room cost was not especially cheap.
Review 82:Very central to the small Tekapo township. The manager was helpful trying to sort out wifi problem but the rest of the staff were too busy all the time. One lady trying to book several groups in.
Review 83:Terribly grotty bathroom & saggy mattress, the security on the sliding door was a loose latch.
Review 84:The minimal view of the lake over the shabby rooftops of the buildings in front.
Review 85:We went to Godley's with the intent of a nice girls weekend away. There were no plates, cutlery or glasses in our room for us to even serve our cheese and nibbles on that we had taken. The bathroom was filthy and disgusting. We then went to the restaurant for dinner and was told it was fully booked therefore we had to leave and go up town.
Review 86:- Worst shower ever used in my life, no water pressure and hardly any hot water - Hot water and Cold water taps separate, no mixer, so your hand will freeze
Review 87:Location only
Review 88:Uncomfortable bed, run down, cracking wall paper, chips and stains in bathroom, not worth what they charge. Nothing like the photos. Would not stay again.
Review 89:It was a bed.
Review 90:Friendly front-of-house staff, beautiful view of the lake and mountains, and great location; great choice for a family. Rooms were a little tired-looking, but comfortable and spacious.
Review 91:Run down gross bathroom - seriously needs renovated! No SKY, no free wifi, the noisy location with tour buses pulling up right outside in the evening and early in the morning. And the room temperature was oddly hot, to the point we got overheated overnight. Very small room for 3 people.
Review 92:Beds were comfy and had new carpet. Staff were friendly.
Review 93:Pics didn't match up to reality. The doors were see through which meant the hallway light shine in all night keeping us awake. Silverfish in the bath????
Review 94:The property was run down, had trouble with the lock on the door, an internal door lead to another room and it wasn't locked originally when we arrived...the adjoining room occupants were VERY noisy and the room extremely cold.
Review 95:Absolutely nothing like the picutres... Unsure where the motel in the picutres was but I would have much preferred it! Our room was located next to the night entrance And upper stair well.. The banging and stomping was so soothing to the ears. The bed was to small for the average kiwi couple, feet off the end and stuck on our sides all Night. No mattress protector and one thin old blanket. Loved the used soap provided in the shower much easier than unwrapping a new clean one... For a couple traveling in our own back yard we expected a lot more, what is this showing to the tourists of nz? I sure as hell wouldn't be pleased having come across the world to the most beautiful wee town and got stuck staying here. Time to up your game and make locals want to stay.
Review 96:Bathroom needs upgrade. I know it was only 2 star but thought wld get better vanity for that. Also really noisy as power company had generator going over night to replace transformer!
Review 97:Location was fine, staff nice, beds really comfortable.
Review 98:Conditions of the room shocking, especially the bathroom -- shower, handbasin. The only easy chair most uncomfortable. Would shudder to think this could be an example of N.Z. for a tourist. Had to request replacement of two light bulbs.
Review 99:For such a beautiful part of the country this hotel was very shabby. Everything was dated, the room had holes in the wall, the bathroom sink was cracked and the shower was poor with limited hot water.
Review 100:The bed was borderline, but if it weren't in such a good location, the place would've been an absolute rip-off for domestic travellers.
Review 101:The location is of course very strategic, right on the lake. It is still rather affordable, but any more would price it out of locals' (NZ) budget.
Review 102:Definitely not value for money. Our room was shabby and not cleaned to an acceptable standard, especially the bathroom basin, which still bore evidence of cigarettes being stubbed out and needed a good scrub. Shower curtain mouldy and smelly. No offer from staff of re-locating us. All they said was that our section of the hotel was due for renovation.
Review 103:staff was not very friendly and since there was no blank for choosing 3 ppl at booking from iPhone app, he charged us more. It wad without the notice on the website saying the same. But we didn't argue. Hot water was very little for 3 guests in one 4-person room. Very expensive wifi
Review 104:Good location, near lake, supermarket, some restaurants and gas station.
Review 105:Rooms were very dated. The first room we had smelt due to carpet cleaning products so asked to move. Next room was better although the heater was dusty and so when turned on, the room smelt dusty too. Terrible shower - poor water pressure and extremely limited hot water supply. For over $200 for 3 people, very expensive and so recommend going elsewhere.
Review 106:Location is great, right on lakefront
Review 107:The shower requires upgrading. The bathroom had it a new basin but probably the whole bathroom area needs more of an overhaul. There was new lino on the floor though.
Review 108:This place is in need of a total overhaul. Very outdated. Bathroom was small, old, no heater, and no water pressure at all. Probably the worst shower I've ever had, it literally trickled out. Bedding could do with being replaced as well.
Review 109:Staff were very friendly and helpful
Review 110:The bathroom was in shocking condition. Mould you could write your name in at eye level on shower walls. Cracked handbasin and broken serotonin on shower walls. Ripped curtains. Disgraceful, worst condition we've ever seen in all our traveled.we've stayed there about 5 times. Even though we booked a standard room the facilities should skyways be clean and tidy.
Review 111:The location
Review 112:The loud construction right outside our window was terrible. There was no apology or discount offered to compensate this interuption. The service staff also showed no interest what so ever in us as guests during both the check in and check out process and a smile seemed non existent on both staff we encountered.
Review 113:The location was very convenient.
Review 114:Bed not that comfy. Found one member of staff very rude and not helpful which was a shame as the other members were excellent
Review 115:Excellent location had a lovely view of the lake and church. Room lovely and warm Room was clean Some of these reviews don't do this place justice
Review 116:New carpet was put into our unit that day, although it was nice to have new carpet, the smell of the glue kept us awake all night, perhaps the room should have been aired for a couple of days
Review 117:The location, could see the historic Tekapo church from our room
Review 118:Pictures were nothing like what we had. Me and my partner work in hospitality and were quite disgusted at the state of the rooms. Extremely unclean and run down, I did asked to move rooms but I was told id have to pay an extra $30 a night. I went to see the upgraded room and it was no better.we have stayed in many hostels before and were looking forward to a hotel with private bathroom. Wish we hadn't of bothered now as the hostels were much nicer.
Review 119:Decent location but I'm afraid that was about it.
Review 120:If God ever visited here he left long ago..... The good thing was location, unfortunately this was the only good thing. On entering our room it was musty and damp, we had to leave the window open just to breathe and it was freezing! The faulty electric blanket and smelly old heater didn't help. There was a stain on the bedset and I was unsure if it had been washed recently. A couple of spoons and a cup was all the kitchen equipment And there was no smoke alarms in our room. The smell was definitely the worst part of the ordeal. 0/10 for the Godley.
Review 121:The only thing that was annoying was our curtain was not long enough to block the door and the window meaning the light next door shone through all night.
Review 122:Great service and location. The decor is quite dated but still clean.
Review 123:the hotel is very run down and in need of a complete makeover, no sky in room, no wifi, felt $175 was very expensive for our one night stay
Review 124:Friendly staff, good breakfast.
Review 125:We've stayed downstairs which is fine but the downside was the noise upstairs that's very annoying. You could hear the loud noise from occupants upstairs walking, dragging the chairs and the creek noise of the floor. Not good for a night rest.
Review 126:Love the location, close to everything
Review 127:The facilities where shockingly bad! The bathroom sink and shower head were broken and the lino in the bathroom was torn and lifting. Water had leaked from somewhere and the carpet was wet. The resulting smell was awful and we had to sleep with the door onto the balcony open (and it was snowing!). All the furniture was old and very worn. We complained and were given another room for our second night. It had apparently been renovated. Nothing was broken but there was peeling paint everywhere and this room was freezing cold and the TV didn't work. I was disgusted and as a Kiwi, am embarrassed to think foreign tourists are being sold this kind of accommodation. It wasn't cheap but then Tekapo is very expensive. Whatever the cost, rooms in this condition are unacceptable.
Review 128:The location was excellent and the staff friendly
Review 129:chattels in the room were a bit tired. Hand basin cracked toilet dripped bug all in all good value for money
Review 130:Rooms were comfortable clean and warm location excellent, staff were friendly
Review 131:Room was too small from number of beds, everything was very tired, old, worn out, bed shocking and could not get hot water for shower for ages. Was only $90 so perhaps that is what we should expect? Breakfast at $15 was poor for this amount, mass produced, out of tins, low quality
Review 132:Lovely staff
Review 133:The pool table, no 8 ball....
Review 134:We understand and see why people have given this hotel such bad reviews, however, we were incredibly fortunate. We got a free room upgrade to a lake side view and an incredible room. It would be difficult for the owner to take over such a large hotel and renovate the rooms to make everyone happy, it's a work in progress and when it's done I'm sure it'll be amazing.
