Reviews for Chulia Heritage Hotel
Review 1:there is an altar placed right outside of my room with joystick and oil lamb burning. It's not a pleasant view.
Review 2:good location in the heritage area. Lots to see and eat. Free wifi. Overall Clean
Review 3:There was no telephone inside the room which is the first time we encountered. Even other heritage hotel nearby like Yeng Keng has hotel line.To consider 2 seaters for bicycle so that those who do not know how to ride can also enjoy!
Review 4:Convenient location in the heritage area. Lots to see and eat. Free wifi. Free rental for bicycle. Overall Clean - although there was a baby cockroach !
Review 5:Nothing really..It would have been better if there were food/bfst options in hotel.
Review 6:Location...you can get money changed, food nearby.Major sites are within walking distance
Review 7:I stay in Room 110 which is nice & quiet, but suggest to put a big notice "Not to slam the door in the middle of the night" cos that was annoying when we were in deep sleep & awaken with anger by the sound!
Review 8:Walking distant to nearby places of interest; Komtar Walk has linked bridge to Prangin Mall & 1st Avenue; Food hunting around was great; Discover Hon Kei汉记 Food Corner always full of people.
Review 9:Nothing.
Review 10:Location was perfect. First time I've stayed at a "share bathroom" facility that was nice & convenient. Much care was taken to ensure cleanliness. Was really impressed. Loved the white simple decor. Loved the altar.
Review 11:Staff is pretty cool when we check-in, but we manage to get along later on. Friend who stayed downstair were telling that they heard noises from upstair and downstair
Review 12:Clean Good location With car park
Review 13:The friendly staff do what they can to make the stay comfortable for guests especially those travelling with bicycles. They gave us a ground floor room so that we could easily keep our bikes safe with us. And although I had unthinkingly booked a smaller room, when they could, they upgraded us to a bigger one so that we had more space for our bikes. I remembered in year 2014 too when I attended a cycling event, they extended check out time so that I could return in time for a quick shower before checking out. Very much appreciate their thoughtfulness.
Review 14:Thanks for the quick upgrade of room to accommodate our immediate need. Staffs were helpful and friendly.Strategic location for easy access to places by foot.
Review 15:Still found hair on bed sheet and floor after room service daily
Review 16:Early check in after reached hotel before noon; solved aircon settings issue once complaint; provided luggage storage FOC service after check out.
Review 17:Limited carpark.after I park my car.i am not dare to drive again .
Review 18:Great location.in the centre of Georgetown .walking distance to everywhere.night time had yummy local food.very clean.
Review 19:The room is so much smaller then I expect! My room number which is 124 & 125. Room 124 is still better, but room 125 is so so so small! The hotel room's photo that i had seen at booking.com was so nice and big, but then the room i get is look so small then what i saw at booking.com. Feel disappointed.
Review 20:There are free ride bicycle provide for us. The bed is quite comfortable. The staff is quite good attitude too. They dont mind to open our room for us when we left our key inside the room everytime. They gave us something we require too, such as hairdryer , plastic.
Review 21:Construction until 6pm every day is tiring to listen to.
Review 22:Hotel is in a great location on Chulia Street, walking distance to the night markets, street art and Love Lane where there are great cafes and bars.
Review 23:The communal toilet was not clean. The room was quite small and tight and with only a small gap between bed, room door and bathroom wall I kept bumping my hips.shower was difficult to use due to space - the shower head was half over the toilet and half over the sink.
Review 24:The location and aesthetics of the hotel were good. Bike hire was nice but some were broken and rusted.
Review 25:We booked two rooms i.e family room with 2 double beds and standard room with 1 double bed. The standard room with 1 double bed had a weird smell and we had to bear with it for 2 nights since the hotel was fully booked.
Review 26:Location and clean room
Review 27:It might have been me but it's a little hard to find. I walked past it about 3 times because it's tucked down a short driveway and there's no hotel name sign on the street to direct you. A sign would really help!
Review 28:The first room I was shown was lovely but smelt strongly of paint due to some renovations they were doing upstairs. When I mentioned it I was immediately moved to another room which was even nicer. Really clean and bright. The bed was comfortable and the shower was amazing!
Review 29:no bad experiences ! the heritage house is thin walled and echoes...so somewhat noisy ay times. NEED TIP BOX for employees...very hard working great group of people! to management: the entry floor tiles are scrubbed almost daily!...please scrub the shower tiles and bath room floors also...
Review 30:staff,clenliness,set back from road good bed...we had a downstairs room and it had both privacy (opened to a walled area ) and fresh air when wanted ..we had 7 day stay. pleased with all. Adi at reception was great ?
Review 31:Quite noisy. Huge lobby is just a big echo chamber for all the Chinese tourists coming and going. Rooms have a 1-2 inch gap under the door so the sound comes right through.
Review 32:Cheerful staff, good location.
Review 33:Staff Incompetence. We waited approximately 20 minutes to check in and 1 of the room was not ready at 3pm though our check in time supposed to be at 2pm.
Review 34:It was newly renovated so the rooms were clean. Worth the price and the location is super good. The hotel even has free bicycles to roam around.
Review 35:It can be loud, especially if there's somebody in the room right above you. (we had a room on the ground floor) Rooms are a bit old and worn down, but at least cheap.
Review 36:Building is nice from outside and location is perfect, everything is nearby and reachable on foot within minutes.
Review 37:Not enough lighting inside the room. Hard for me to put on some make up at night before went out for night life activities.
Review 38:Strategically located in middle of Georgetown. 7 minutes from Komtar. 5 minutes from Penang Road. Safe area. Recommended to all.
Review 39:The toilet paper kept getting wet in d bathroom as it was too close to the shower. Maybe it could be moved to the ledge near the window
Review 40:This hotel is located close to Little India and to Penang Road as well. The hotel is v clean inside. Rooms are small for a family and v basic, but it was fine with us coz we just needed a comfortable air conditioned room to sleep in. The common bathrooms - were v clean. Each cubicle had a toilet, shower and sink. And there were about 6-8 of them. The lady at the front office in the mornings was so friendly and helpful with directions. There were bicycles for rent, but we didn't use them
Review 41:The air-condition was noisy. The room had a smell. No laundry bag, no room service. The room facilities was very poor. Would not recommend to anyone The heater was not hot.
Review 42:There is nothing tht i like about this hotel.
Review 43:1)Still in renovation progress with noise ,upper floor full of walking noise ,make us can't rest. 2)Toilet can't flush 3)need to clean up those spiderwebs & dust
Review 44:Only ground floor room is having toilet inside the room, very noise and uncomfortable sleep at ground floor room, u can feel upstairs people walking and running, the price is not worth it. Never try this hotel again.
Review 45:From the main door before I checked in until the time i checked out, the staffs are nice and very helpful including the security guard who helped to get parking space
Review 46:My room (No 120) is just next to Hotel's Public toilet. I was woke up by noisy guess (I think) mid night. Because of the location of the room, i feel no so comfortable. Many items in room check list is not available, e.g. arm chair.magazine, multiple plug...
Review 47:good location, friendly staff and hotel is clean
Review 48:Situated just off of Chulia Street, the main touristy street, the hotel is in a great location which allowed us to return throughout the day to rest or drop off shopping. Good in-room facilities - tea/coffee, fridge, tv, air conditioning. Helpful staff.
Review 49:the room is small can,t even turn my body after i put my luggage and the hotel should put some sign board to show which way to the hotel.
Review 50:i live the location and the design of the hotel it is really good location and nice hotel.
Review 51:The bicycles for rent were in pretty bad shape, ended up not cycling at all during the trip. Not very important detail though.
Review 52:The room was an ok size. We really didn't expect a very large one anyway. But the room was SO CLEAN and spotless! The toilet was small though, and you risk getting your dry clothes wet. Location is fantastic, right smack in the middle of the heritage site and walkable to most points of interests. Lovely stay 10/10 would reccomend for penang
Review 53:No mirror in the room.
Review 54:We had a room on the ground floor with private bathroom. The hotel has a beautiful look, and it is sparkling white. The room was large and comfortable. All the landmarks in the world heritage George Town area can be covered by walk from the hotel. It is close to Komtar bus terminal and not far from the ferry terminals. The hotel staff provided immediate assistance whenever we requested.
Review 55:I always book in the booking.com for my travelling purpose and there is no extra charge and the hotel will pay the booking.com fees. Included in the room rate I guess. There is hidden charge for this hotel. My Room stated in the booking.com is RM127.40 (excluded 6% charge, which is I though that is a GST charge). When we wanted to pay, RM127.40 x 6% (booking.com fees) = RM135.04 x 6% (GST) = RM143.14 + RM2 (Heritage fees for state gov) = RM145.14. The actual room rate is RM145 (after asking for discount). They should put the information in booking.com and the guest will understand. Just I feel like too many hidden cost. Even it is not much different but still when you have not inform about the charge, will feel like we have been cheated. But I like the architecture of the hotel building. Hope they will improve in given information to guest in Booking.com.
Review 56:The hotel real looks a like in the website. The building is heritage building. Very clean and comfortable.
Review 57:1.Parking problem 2.Bicycle problem 3.Please indicatate No Smoking Inside the Toilet 4.Room key problem
Review 58:what i like Chulia is because : 1.Heritage Style 2.Clean and comfortable 3.Good Location-Near to all those good food & cheap stall
Review 59:Hard time finding the hotel, maybe set up a signage nearby the turning. Construction going on for the last day, directly beside my room. Soundproof should be improved as raindrops gonna be a nightmare for you. Bathroom is kind of small. Air-Cond may shut-down on its own.
Review 60:Location. A decent place.
Review 61:The staff is helpful, but is emotionless and lack of welcoming smile on their face. The air-conditional takes quite sometime to make the room cold, is very dissatisfying especially after a tour in Georgetown, we are all sweaty and sticky... The lobby is not air-conditioned. Since the hotel is hidden at the backstreet, it makes it even more difficult to locate it because of lack of signboard at the main road.
Review 62:The British colonial era style of architecture makes the hotel itself a point of interest. The shared bathrooms are surprisingly clean.
Review 63:The noise from first floor(fyi, Im lived ground floor) especially when comes to bed time, you can hear a lot of stepping sound, the door closing sound and the pumping shampoo sound. Overall, they should find solution for the sound-proofing.
Review 64:The design of the building, location...
Review 65:Soundproof was not good enought. Bathroom was lack of space
Review 66:Room was clean and all facilities is working, helpful staff and free bikes usage for all guest
Review 67:It would've been great if they also offered breakfast. But it wasn't much of an issue since there were a lot of places to eat in in the immediate area.
Review 68:The location was near the ferry terminal which helped as we arrived early in the morning. The staff was helpful. This is definitely a place I will stay in again should I find myself in Penang again.
Review 69:We didnt get a carpark for the first night due to fullhouse of the carpark area
Review 70:The location extremely good! The staff very fast respond to our complaint, because the aircond was not functioning during the second night. They solved the problem and fixed it within 5 - 10 mins. We are happy to stay here and very satisfied.
Review 71:Being a budget hotel, there is no porter service- you carry your own luggage from / to taxi/ room. Room size is small.
Review 72:Low budget; value for money.
Review 73:First I have been receiving warnings for a week that I have to provide alternative credit card to keep reservation which I did successfully. Then for another week I got more notices that my reservation might be canceled even with alternative credit card. Finally when I got there payment had to be upfront. No electricity at our room (means no air con as well), kept telling us it will come but the next day we decided to check out three days early, so they gave us another room with electricity. Room cleaning comes around 5pm and takes your towels while not providing new ones. Rooms have "windows" looking at the hallway so it's like having no windows. The only person who genuinely smiled to us was the night portir and maybe one receptionist. I never rated any hotel poorly but this one deserves bad review.
Review 74:Location, free bikes (in poor condition)
Review 75:Didn't know this is a budget hotel..didn't even know we will be sharing common bathroom. The common toilets are not exactly clean and in the morning, cubicles are not usable due to stains. Quite gross.. Also room has only one power socket which is barely enough for 3 friends fighting to charge their mobile phones.
Review 76:Nothing except the price?
Review 77:The curtain in the room smell really awful. It's time to change the curtain to fabric instead of plastic material. It smell just like a PVC!
Review 78:Room and washroom are clean.
Review 79:If there's a proper pantry facility with microwave, washing sink, water filter etc would be perfect.
Review 80:The ambience in the hotel is way beyond my expection. Besides meeting with travelers from all around the world, friendly staffs embraced my journey with welcoming services , it truly feels like home! Likewise, architecturally, the building itself whisper the cultural and heritage of Penang with the presence of antique vent blocks, refurbished timber flooring and so on. Overall, it is more than just nice.
Review 81:additional 6% to booked price due to some legal reasons...
Review 82:the colonnial building and its restoration. accomodation in simple / basic but comfortable rooms.
Review 83:Service of the staff was not great. The room is extremely small with no facilities. There is only one power point which is so bizarre in this time and age. Our room is literally next to the car park and the front desk - we could open the room window and climb out into the car park, which we felt unsafe. The bicycles (although free) are in bad shape and half of them can't be used and those marginally can be used are also in bad shape.
Review 84:The location is good but the hotel is not on the main road - is kind of hiding behind an alley. Not noticeable from main road and easily missed if you are on that road (Chulia Street).
Review 85:Hotel is indeed noisy, door was thin and giving directly to the reception ... We could hear people talking to the receptionist (and the one hammering far in the back). It's killing all the intimacy of the room. The window was actually showing on another corridor ... not outside.
Review 86:Good location, clean and large room, nice shower. Welcoming and helpful staff. Good wifi.
Review 87:the toilet was flooded and I slipped on the wet flood because there was not separation between shower and dressing area. very dangerous.you must take corrective action. The furniture in the reception area is dirty. I dare not touch or sit on it.
Review 88:convenient location for shopping, eating and touring
Review 89:Price was not cheap, thin walls can hear people above walking all the time.
Review 90:Was clean, small but comfy room had everything I needed and was in a good location for me (Thai visa place just over road, Jim's place would recommend if coming for Thai visa run).
Review 91:The bicycles are not allowed to be taken out after 6pm =(
Review 92:This is our second time here. The staff were friendly. The place was very central to the cultural activities in Penang and the hotel provides car park which makes it very convenient. The place was very clean.
Review 93:No wifi coverage to hotel room and less parking space.
Review 94:Best location for the holiday at Penang. Many food stall near to the hotel. Clean and efficient staffs.
Review 95:The wifi was very unstable. Easy to hear sounds outside the room. Didn't really bother us this time and I think it comes with an old heritage building.
Review 96:It's right in the heart of town, so ideal for exploring Georgetown. Bars and restaurants at your doorstep.
Review 97:- noisy sound when other customer closed the door - some customer talk loudly, walking sound quite noisy
Review 98:- Friendly Staff and Security ( a Chinese uncle) - Good WiFi - Nice Environment - Clean room and comfortable bed & pillow
Review 99:There was nothing that I disliked.
Review 100:Have been to Penang so many times, although this was my first visit to Chulia Heritage. Being a light sleeper, I was a bit apprehensive at being allocated a room a few metres from the reception desk. No worries, no noise, slept well, excellent. Had a hiccup with my credit card, so, Natasha at reception proved very patient and understanding, whilst I sought a nearby ATM. So, it's a big thanks to her and the rest of the staff who were always there with with a smile. I would certainly visit again!
Review 101:Can hear sounds fr everywhere...especially the footsteps because it is wooden floor upstairs. Traffic jam all along the way to this hotel made us so nearly give up the stay.
Review 102:The hotel is beautiful n unique. Overall is satisfying.
Review 103:My room was on the ground floor and it rained heavily the first night and water went into the room. Staff then placed towel to dry the floor. But apparently water came out from the bathroom when you shower as well. Bathroom door and space is small and you might end up knocking yourself here and there while showering if you're a big sized person. Very modern setup and not as "heritage" as the name sounds.
Review 104:Comfortable bed, supportive staff, parking is limited but very organized
Review 105:A few cockroaches crawl in the bathroom during a rainy night. Extra effort should be put in pest control
Review 106:Location is convenience. A number of food stalls / restaurants near the hotel. Also not a long distance to bus stations. The staff is helpful
Review 107:When arriving there, we were charged an extra 6-10% tax that was not specified anywhere. The room is very tinny (standard room with bathroom) and the toilet as well. The shower is placed in the middle, so the whole the toilet gets totally wet. The window gives to an indoors wall, so can not enjoy any view. No fridge avaible in the room, that is necessary with the hot temperatures that are in Penang. Very poor wifi and breakfast not included...definetly overpriced.
Review 108:Great location. Nice stuff. Good AC. Nice building from outside.
Review 109:Bed was a lil small for 2 . As the room wasnt that big either . But i guess it was ok for the sum paid .
Review 110:Location is the best .. nearby restaurants and nightlife
Review 111:1. There is no prayer mat 2. Parking is limited. 3. Bathrooms for room 107 there is a problem of stagnant water as the bathroom floor was uneven.
Review 112:1. The location is very strategic and close to attractions. Within walking distance of the hotel. 2. The rooms are spacious and very comfortable for me and my husband. 3. Easy to find food.
Review 113:Some Shower gel dispenser is malfunction and empty. It would be better if can improve the shower head water pressure .
Review 114:Location is great and within walking distance to explore penang tourist spot and eatery . Thumbs up.
Review 115:Breakfast was not a part of the package. But it is not available only.
Review 116:The clean room, common toilet, friendly staff, free WiFi and of course the location.
Review 117:The private toilet in room is too small. Get the cloths wet when bath, this is very poor design. The heater is not function well, max the heat level, the water come out still is cold.
Review 118:The location is good and convenient.
Review 119:No sign of the hotel on the street, the taxi driver did not know where the hotel was.
Review 120:+ the friendly and helpful staff + The small front yard was lovely.
Review 121:The lobby is not air-conditioned. The heat was unbearable in a hot month like April. There is no telephone in the room, inconvenient to contact group members.
Review 122:Staff are nice, helpful and courteous.
Review 123:The room is too small with a tiny bathroom. The shower is just above the toilet. Given the price we paid, it should of been better.
Review 124:Conveniently located, friendly staff.
Review 125:Totally wet bathroom/toilet. Little niceties could be added to make a better more complete room without much effort & expense
Review 126:Location, friendly staff & rooms 110-119 in the annexe.
Review 127:A little noisy when people came in late and the early prayers at the nearby mosque disturbed the light sleepers in my group. The wifi wasn't very good!
Review 128:The location was good and the staff were very friendly and helpful.
Review 129:- Was made to wait for almost 20 minutes to check-in even though there were hardly any waiting customer ahead of the queue. - Rooms near to the reception is noisy. - Faulty shower tab in Room 104.
Review 130:- Staffs were courteous. - Room was clean. - Strategic location in the middle of the World Heritage Zone. - Requested for an upgrade from Standard to Deluxe room, which was given without additional charges. - Free parking and rental bikes for customers.
Review 131:When I first stepped in the hotel lobby, there is a chinese lady (long hair, without spectacles) who greeted me at the reception counter. When i liaise with her for the registration and payment, her attitude is less friendly. I don't mean to hurt anyone here, but instead of returning guest identity card to the guest's hand, the way she returned my id card did turned me down. However, other staffs are quite friendly and willing to help when I have some inquiries.
Review 132:the interior architecture is amazing, with all the white cover almost the whole interior with a little accent of gold. they preserve and innovate from the old heritage building's character yet bringing alive the architecture space.
Review 133:The door in my room (room 118) is not fitted to the door frame so I need to pull/push it hard to open/close.
Review 134:Very easy to move around the tourist destination because of the perfect location. Wifi signal is strong with good internet speed.
Review 135:Only one power plug in a three bed room
Review 136:The location is very central on busy Chulia street and the hotel offers free bycicles - ideal for the exploration of Georgetown! The hotel is still more quiet than other hotels as it is located in the second row.
Review 137:Toilet/Shower area is too small and inferior Slow connectivity
Review 138:Friendly and helpful staff Awesome location - if u r there for the local food The bicycle facilities Parking facilities Price of room
Review 139:Could have ha a bigger bathroom..... That's really not thatbad is it!!!!
Review 140:I have to say we liked everything about this little gem! For about £20a night we had a stunning Georgian style room, all white, great tellyset in wall, kettle and coffee items. Room cleaned without fail orfault. Incredibly quiet location, set back from road. You step out fromthe drive into Chulia Street, packed with bars and cafés of kitch andcool. At the end of the road is te wen trendier Love Lane with museumsand cute cafés! Go to Mickes Place!!! The food kicked!!!! :D Weextended our stay and would t have left had it not been for our bookedtickets. Great light room, clean and glam (if a little faded) hotelhall and lobby. Go stay!!!
Review 141:instead of putting water heater, how about putting a water dispenser where we can get not only hot but cold water too. Parking were too limited.
Review 142:the place were nice, even the shared bathroom were clean.
Review 143:A mini fridge will be good, given the really hot weather in Penang. It will be nice to come back to hotel and enjoy some cold drinks!
Review 144:Good food are all within walking distance Staff are helpful Room is simple but comfortable
