Quinta de Sao Thiago

Quinta de Sao Thiago descritpion
This guesthouse is in a 16th-century country house on the lower slopes of Sintra’s hills, just 2 miles outside Sintra. It has a swimming pool surrounded by a tree-shaded garden.
Quinta de São Thiago features rustic rooms decorated with wooden furniture. All rooms have a bathroom with bathtub, while some rooms have balconies with views of the grounds.
The Quinta Thiago offers a well-stocked library and a music room available for dancing. As its historic function was as a residence for monks, there still is an in-house chapel.
From the guesthouse, steps lead down to the grounds pool surrounded by deck chairs. Guests can bathe in the sun or read a book while enjoying the peaceful garden. There is also a tennis court.
Cabo da Roca lighthouse, marking the most westerly point of Europe, is only a 20-minute drive away. Lisbon is 19 miles away.

Reviews for Quinta de Sao Thiago
Review 1:Separate taps for cold and hot water seem strange enough (for the shower there was a normal mixer tap though). We admit it can be a part of historical fleur. GPS location specified on booking.com actually points to the turn to the final road (not to the quinta itself). Obviously that prevents GPS navigator from calculating a wrong route but may be also confusing, so this fact shall be taken into account while approaching.
Review 2:The quinta perfectly matches the mystical spirit of Sintra. Ivy-covered, sometimes unfinished sculptures scattered along the perimeter of parking squire add additional fascination to this enigmatic place. The sculptures was created by Nandor Balasko, hungarian (transilvanian) sculptor lived here since 1970. We could see the dome of Monserrate palace from our window. The room itself was decorated with orient (mainly chinese) statuettes. Even a narrow road (quite stony, but not too difficult for experienced driver) is rather a part of entourage than a real problem.
Review 3:-do not expect 21st century comfort in a house that treasures traditions developed in 400 years....... -driving almost 1 km downhill on a very small and rocky dirt track before reaching this treasure can be a challenge......(especially at night)
Review 4:unique B&B that could very well be a well kept museum situated in an idyllic setting.
Review 5:The access is not very easy as it has a private way and only accessible by car, however, with a car is perfectly fine.
Review 6:Wonderful house with a very warm welcome! Beautiful surroundings and the ideal place to rest but also to go for a lovely meal in Colares, Sintra or Azenhas do Mar. Highly recommended.
Review 7:The track to the property is quite hard work with a fully loaded touring bike.
Review 8:The owner's piano playing was drifting over the garden as we arrived. Enjoyed a dip in the pool after a hot day. The breakfast was sumptuous.
Review 9:The road to get to Quinta de Sao Thiago was a challenge to find and then to navigate.
Review 10:The house and grounds were charming and lovely. They definitely evoked a different time and pace of life. It was an incredible experience to stay there.
Review 11:The steep narrow path/road down to the house. We managed just fine with a station wagon though.
Review 12:The entire family living there was extraordinary nice and friendly. We were travelling with our 10 months old baby and they adored her and were always helpful in that regard. Very interesting and beautiful old house and interior.
Review 13:We had a enjoyable stay! The room was sspeciouswith a very comfy bed. The house is amazingly clean and Dulce, tbe owner, is really nice, helpfull and enthusiastic. We highly recommend this place!
Review 14:The family who runs it made it so interesting. Lovely and charming !
Review 15:Very friendly host, historic building, tranquil atmosphere, garden and pool. Helpful recommendations regarding sights and restaurants.
Review 16:It was a real priviledge to stay in this beautiful house and enjoy the garden and the superb swimming pool.
Review 17:The bed was a bit narrow and the mattress a bit hard (some people like it that way) - but at the end it is not a big deal.
Review 18:Wonderful location and garden with great views. Beautiful old house with classy furniture - one of the great "quintas" of Sintra area. A nice library where the owner plays piano. Huge pool, tennis court in a lush garden. Tranquility and discrete staff. Bright and clean rooms. Lot's of charm and ambiance. Good value for the money.
Review 19:Very nice location in a 16th century Quinta. For us the bumpy roads adds to the experience. Good breakfast at a large table which takes you back ages. The garden is great with view of the Sintra forest and Monserate palace.
Review 20:This is a family owned property. The land lady is very kind. On the first day she dropped us in her car in to the city gave us a little education of Sintra. Excellent and friendly people. The place is connected by a bus (30 mins interval) to city, you need to walk about 15 mins from the hotel, which we did with young kids, which was very fine.
Review 21:1.The location of the hotel is quite tricky. According to our navigation system, it is located only 3 km from the train station. But if you chose to walk to the hotel, and you have some luggage with you, please mind that streets and roads in Sintra are all up and down, and you will be just exhausted when you get to the place. Alternative is to take the bus 435 (the bus stop is some 50 M. to the right when you leave the train station) heading Montserrat - you need to get off at the bus stop Quinta Sao Thiago and walk down the side path around 10 min. The best alternative is surely to take a taxi, but the problems is that the hotel is located off the paved road, and only few taxi drivers agree to take you directly to the hotel. We were lucky to find taxi driver Ricardo who brought us there. He is the only Ricardo among the taxi drivers, so in any restaurant/cafe in Sintra they will give you his number.2. I am not sure but it seems like the hot water is supplied only after 9 am, so no need to get up earlier than 9 am to take a hot shower :)
Review 22:Unique place with amazing atmosphere - unique mansion with beautifullydecorated interiors! Very friendly hosts - a local family with Irish andSpanish roots, and you can see family pictures all around the house. Thehost gave us very good tips about the surroundings and was so kind evento drop us off to Montserrate palace! Rooms are very spacious, and soare the toilets and the bathrooms in the rooms. Very good breakfastserved in the beautifully decorated dinning room. We visited the placein early November, so it was a bit cold in the nights, but the rooms areequipped with electric heaters.
Review 23:I'm sure that the location would put some people off (it's down a bumpy, narrow old road and is not really all that easy to find). To us, this was part of the adventure, but may not be to everyone's liking. If you prefer your boring, faceless, cookie-cutter hotels, then this may not be for you.
Review 24:Wonderful Unique place - antique furniture, stone steps - very unusal place to stay. Personanble and friendly staff. Huge oudoor pool Gorgeous mature gardens.
Review 25:very bad access to the location,no staff available,we found room dirty and shabby. service, cleanliness and also breakfast very poor considering the price: actually very poor value for money
Review 26:swimming pool and garden. Historical atmosphere...unfortunatley also in the maintanance of the rooms :(
Review 27:No air conditioning, which means leaving the windows open and mosquitos.
Review 28:This is a beautiful, old home with an unmatched amount of character. Thegrounds are beautiful, the pool was very refreshing, but most of all,the staff was amazing. They were all so friendly that we felt like wewere at home. The breakfast was one of the best we had while inPortugal. We will definitely stay there again.
Review 29:The beds were all twin size and very creaky. Mattresses were extremely hard. The room was terribly hot and would have been much better just with a fan (but there wasn't one). We didn't get a tour of the house upon arrival (but our friends did because Debra greeted them and not Teresa). We weren't sure where breakfast was or where we were able to explore in the house and what areas were off limits.
Review 30:The setting was amazing and the atmosphere was very inviting. We felt a part of the family for sure. The pool was spectacular.
Review 31:There were cobwebs on the furniture in our room, terrible stale, humid smell throughout the property. The water in the swimming pool looked terribly dirty, did not venture in. The absolute worst was this evil-looking woman who might be the owner or lives there for some reason, insane-looking, mumbling to herself and roaming the grounds. On our first night, we arrived back from dinner and she was in the common area, tv blasting, she mumbled something incomprehensible as we walked upstairs to our room. Later, we could hear her yelling, having a conversation with someone over the phone or with herself (as there were no other audible voices). The property is impressive, but just thinking of going back to the hotel after our lovely days, made our stomachs turn. If you want to enjoy your time in Sintra or surroundings, we recommend NOT to stay there. As metioned above, it's a shame because the property does have lots of potential.
Review 32:XVI century property, lovely gardens, great selection of books in the library.
Review 33:The road for the last mile or so was terrible with large potholes.
Review 34:It was quiet and peaceful and staff were very friendly and helpful. Thegrounds were beautiful with great outdoor swimming pool . nice breakfast
Review 35:The access road, which we were told is scheduled to be paved within the year. Driving on the roads in Sintra is not for the faint of heart. The roads are 2-way but narrow. The access to the property is not paved and is rocky and rutted.
Review 36:The property is beautiful, grounds, gardens, buildings. The staff was so friendly and helpful that they felt like family before we left. Our room had a wonderful outlook over the hills in Sintra. The lush greenery just makes you smile. Breakfast in a formal dining room with a huge table set for all of the guests as if we were guests of the family. Very lovely.
Review 37:Arriving at the Quinta somehow feels like being thrown in a 19th century novel, being the guests of an old English Lord or Lady. Fabulous! Very friendly and corteous staff. And definitiely not the standard hotel chain experience...
Review 38:You definetely need a car to reach it down some very poor roads. Not the cleanest place. Bathroom facilities could do with a little"mise à point".
Review 39:Wonderful, magic place. Nice staff always there eager to please.
Review 40:Fantastic old house with unique location in the heart of the Sintra. Privacy, hospitality, historically
Review 41:Not very easy to find, on the end of a steep gravel road.
Review 42:Nice, traditional family run guest house with friendly staff. Very nice pool with a view.
Review 43:The most beautiful setting, with delightful swimming pool and gardens. Most helpful and pleasant owners and staff alike.
Review 44:Very atmospheric and historic place. The best choice to learn theculture of Portugal. We really enjoyed it!
