Reviews for Evergreen Laurel Hotel Penang

Review 1:we wanted to check out a day earlier compared to what we booked thru booking.com the hotel insisted that we pay for the full booking we made thru booking.com

Review 2:location is very good.

Review 3:The fact that you had to push a button to get your room cleaned. Room service was also rather slow in delivering my food orders. Finally, the cost of dinner buffet was quite expensive at the Lobby Cafe.

Review 4:Proximity to my destination: Gurney Paragon Mall, where I had to watch the New Year's celebration. The staff in the swimming pool were also quite responsive to my requests to accommodate a few guests. Also, the general cleanliness of the hotel.

Review 5:The staff is not so friendly and do not take the initiative to explain third party bookings properly. For example one uses a spouse credit card to book a room and upon arrival the staff at the reception counter claim that they need to swipe your own credit card because it's violating the rules to use your spouse credit card even though you have used the card to book a room before arrival.

Review 6:The hotel is clean, warm and comfortable

Review 7:None.

Review 8:Members of the staff were very pleasant and helpful. They are also very strong in teamwork. Felt the warm and friendly environment all round. Good job. Please keep it up!

Review 9:Better to hv shower cubicle instead of bath tub. TV programs not enough. Lack of power point.

Review 10:The minibar is excellent. Shower's water pressure is good.

Review 11:Pool area was closed for a wedding when we arrived. Lobby Bar was not well ventilated and smoking was allowed. Very unpleasant for non-smokers. I left before I really wanted to as there was a band playing :(

Review 12:Very comfortable room with a stunning view. Close to eating places. Breakfast was very good.

Review 13:Non

Review 14:The staff are very friendly and helpful. I would like to express my gratitude to Mark who went extra mile to accommodate to our request for non smoking room during peak season at the hotel.

Review 15:1. Pool closed, we were not informed , what was worse even front desk was not aware nor the concierge 2. We couldn't wait for the bellboy to get our bags .. So we brought it down ourselves. But what was sad eventhough a few staff including the bell boy were at the entrance , they did not assist us to get the bags into the car .. And that too when we were all ladies with small children.. It was very sad to say the least ..very disheartened at the courtesy level of the staff

Review 16:It was at a convenient area

Review 17:None

Review 18:The staff at the front desk was excellent. We arrived slightly early (after a 7 hours drive) but was given a room almost immediately. The front staff also tried to find us the best room as we were paying a very high price for the rooms as it was peak season. Credit to Farrah and her team.

Review 19:Your bath room lighting lack of maintenace, the fleo light was blinking all the way, no proper bowel cleaning facilities and short of bath towel

Review 20:Location wise but lack of local muslim food stall or restaurant availabe ariund the hotel

Review 21:This hotel is too expensive for what it offers, which is very little, facing a polluted beach and a noisy main road, and right next door to dingy, unsanitary eating places.

Review 22:Nothing much. Penang lives too much, like Melaka, on its World Heritage listing. It is becoming badly congested, overcrowded and expensive

Review 23:After travelling all day to get to Penang, I had to wait three hours for the faulty safe deposit box to be replaced. Also, I overpaid for the type of room I was assigned to for a week.

Review 24:Nothing specific.

Review 25:We stayed in this hotel almost every time we visited Penang because it's walking distance to Gurney Plaza n gurney drive food court.

Review 26:Location n nice sea view.

Review 27:problems accessing the room - four attempts to open the door after checking in- bloody wasted 45 minutes with four staff members trying to have the door open/fixed. given another room, apart from the views quite average 3/4 star hotel.

Review 28:good views. breakfast ordinary.

Review 29:This hotel is over-rated and over-priced. Gurney Drive is congested and dirty, as are the numerous food outlets in the immediate vicinity. The beach area facing the hotel is a disgrace and the level of noise and pollution is astonishingly high. I stayed one week in this hotel and paid too much for a so-called "Superior" room, instead staying in the Deluxe Room which I booked through Booking.com. On my first day, it took the staff three hours to fix my safe deposit box. On top of this, I found that the level of maintenance had declined since my last visit two years ago.

Review 30:Leaving.

Review 31:The staff were not friendly or helpful, even to the point of being negative when I asked for the yellow pages. The bar area was deserted, smoky and unwelcoming.

Review 32:View of the sea with a good choice of hawker food shops and not too far from the main town and tourist sights.

Review 33:The parking lot was a bad experience for me. It is too narrow and short for my hilux pickup to enter.

Review 34:I liked the Location where we can find lots of delicious food. The seaside view was beautiful at night.

Review 35:didnt like the fact that the lights the AC and any electric was directly wired to having your room card in a slot on the wall. So your room would be hot when you got back in it.. Stupid idea.. not what I pay a noce hotel room for and first time I ever encountered that in any "high end" hotel. wont go back again.

Review 36:nice location, facility and great breakfast buffet in the morning for a fee

Review 37:No bad experience

Review 38:The hotel location is perfect. It is near to the sea, close to the shopping complexes and surrounded by the food stalls, restaurants. All reachable within walking distance.

Review 39:Lovely hotel , spacious room with everything you could need. Lovely pool area , Food was very good high quality , Room service excellent .Sea view room superb view .10 minutes walk to one of the best shopping malls .

Review 40:Check in proceed very slow Receptionist and front desk staffs not friendly, slow action. Didn't provide professional service as expected.

Review 41:Location quite convenient

Review 42:I changed my requirement to 2 single beds but hotel was not able to accommodate.

Review 43:Wifi was good. Room was clean and spacious. Location was excellent. Early check in was a breeze.

Review 44:1. Gym washrooms were dirty, smelt of urine & cigarettes though it was empty. 2 Bellboy did not offer to take our bags to room, we had to find our own way. 3. Large buffet for breakfast but mainly local brands that we couldn't eat. 4. Furniture looked dated, not what we expected from a 5☆ hotel. 5. Didnt understand why we had to pay 10% service charge when that's part of the room rates, with 2 additional taxes. But apparently this is imposed by the government but it's a costly amount on top!

Review 45:1. Had hot & cold Jacuzzis, wet & dry steam saunas, tennis court, well equipped gym 2. Rachel the reception manageress who was friendly & helpful. 3. IncludeD iron & board in room.

Review 46:we are facing 3 or 4 times power failure within 2 hours in the morning. whenever we turned on the TV, the electricity was suddenly gone. it was quite annoying.

Review 47:the hotel room was great, spacious and facing the sea, swimming pool was great, overall facilities were good.

Review 48:-toilet pipe noise all the time. -tough malay young girl at reception. - no pen in my 5 star room. -curtain leaking sunlight.

Review 49:-good view. -good breakfast. -good free parking

Review 50:The only complaint I have for this hotel is that I think the carpark needs more lighting and the rooms should have brighter lighting.

Review 51:The stafs at the hotel are all really friendly and very attentive.

Review 52:Staff : friendly but not terribly efficient. Sent them an email prior to check-in to arrange for hotel transfer, provided them with my booking number etc yet they still asked me for my credit card number via email instead of locating the number via my booking. We called for reception to fix our in-room electronic safe and they arrived only an hour later. Ordered room service and they brought the wrong bottle of wine. Don't order the house wine, one of the worst I've ever had. Hygiene at coffee machine at the breakfast area needs to be worked on. I saw baby roaches.

Review 53:Large rooms typical of older hotels in Penang. Room deco dated but comfortable. Pillows decent and bed firm. Nice view of the sea, no beach as tide beats against rocks. Location convenient. Stroll against traffics for 3 minutes to reach Song River eatery, which is a collection of hawker stalls, try the char kway teow. Breakfast : good spread of local buffet & limited international. Sit at the corner closest to the reception hall if u want decent wifi signal, some of the circular benches have a power socket to charge your phone. Room service : food quality decent. Ordered nasi goreng which is of typical standard compared to other 4* hotels in Penang. Generous portions. Complimentary fruits & mini bar in the room.

Review 54:Limited car parking space. If there is a function then non hotel staying patrons will take up the car parking space. Non staying hotel patrons should be limited to say 2 hour parking after 8pm

Review 55:This hotel is near the city centre but not in city centre so less traffic jam. Nice waterfront for walks/jogs. Near to a shopping mall and eateries. Just nice hotel for all travellers.

Review 56:Good value for the price we pay. We got 3 quarter double bed for a family 4. Pillows and beds were comfy. Breakfast was great. They are generous for the spread. It comes with a coffee machine! The room also come with daily replenishment of fruits.

Review 57:The air conditional is not working well, the room not really cold although temperature was set at 15C.

Review 58:The location is good, just in front of the beach. But the beach is not for swimmer,we can just walk along and enjoy the nice breeze.

Review 59:One morning, the housekeeper left the pillowcases the night before on our bed.

Review 60:The location with its close proximity to shopping malls and eating stalls

Review 61:Hotel/Lobby cafe - Out of cakes at 10pm ! Embarassing as I invited frineds over for a chat over coffee and cakes

Review 62:Well maintained hotel that is perfectly located for my purpose

Review 63:Hidden costs, thereafter it became quite expensive.

Review 64:Cleanliness and comfort of the hotel. Delicious buffet breakfast, hotel replenishes free refreshment drinks, fruits and sweets in the room each day.

Review 65:On 2nd may 2015 around 10 something night ...we didn't find a car parking ..so we go to lobby ask the management. ..the management ask we go staff parking area ...the management didn't mentions the height of the vehicle can go ...n also no signboard mentions the height of the vehicle...our Velfire top crash..we report the case to the management. .. on Tuesday 5th may I received a call from evergreen laurEl hotel ...the management ask we go report or anything call his security manager ..how we go report ...we stay at Kuala lumpur ...so poor

Review 66:First day check in on 20-4-2015, found strong body odor of previous guest on chairs, bed and wall. Complain to the Housekeeping on second day and ask them to change out the bed protector and chairs and walls while we were out. We had to endure one night of unpleasantness. Housekeeping should have checked before selling the room.

Review 67:The usual setting, my perfect location in Penang. The staff response to our complain about smell on chairs, bed and walls. They brought in the ionizer machine on the second day.

Review 68:no thing bad only feel pool bar could offer more options

Review 69:The lounge bar room was a great ply to relax either before or after dinner, cool and relaxing with very attentive staff live music later in the evening was a bonus

Review 70:Taxi service still can be improved

Review 71:The receptionist Ms.Rain is very nice and helpful, She even guided us the different types of room and chose upon our preference.

Review 72:The overall deco is rather outdated. Entrance through swimming pool is via seperated female / male lockers.

Review 73:Location was excellent - about 1.1km walk to the Gurney Hawkers

Review 74:There will no blankets n when given it was old n thin. I caught a cold because of this. Not only this, the bath towels will not replenish n we hv to request for it. Even then it took some time. Room was not really clean after first night. Overall, the stay was satisfactory.

Review 75:Those trainee and receptionist are not proficient enough in English...should brush up their language skills before putting them at the front desk.

Review 76:Nice place to stay..convenient location..

Review 77:We had arrived at the hotel at 12.30pm and been told by the staff that the room will be ready by 2pm. so we walked around gurney area while waiting for the room to be ready, We came back at 2.30pm to check the room and the staff told us the room still not ready yet so we have to wait again. There were other guests also waiting for their room. We only be able to check in at 3.30pm. We do understand that the hotel was full house during that time but i think the management should look into this matter seriously because it is not right to keep your guest waiting

Review 78:Overall, the room was nice and comfortable

Review 79:Obscured & hidden signages: Signages to Evergreen Laurel from sea frontage road is hardly visible and truely hidden. At night lagi susah and poorly lighted up!! Each time when approaching/driving towards Evergreen I had to look out for the 'hidden' hotel and its less than prominent hidden signages and had to 'circle' the route again a few occasions. Due to the sudden and sharp turning angle at the main entry access from the main road and the heavily used route due to Jalan Kelawei being turned into 1-way street, speeding cars made it dangerous for cars slowing down to turn and enter the main entrance to Evergreen. Surely some ALERT/WARNING SIGNAGES would be a great help to motorists/guests. A well lighted entrance (especially at night) is a friendly gesture of a WARM WELCOME to hotel guests.

Review 80:Friendly and helpful hotel staff especially Puan Sharifah, the Assistant Manager

Review 81:Staff hospitality After check in the hotel at 17:00 (hotel check in time 14:00), there’s no any towels in the room and we immediately call the housekeeping for the towel becouse we need it. But no towel untill second call at 20:00 then we got the towels. Staff not giving full information and full support for facitilies usage and we have to go and ask again and again for help and facities needed such as locker key. No inventory inspection together with staff and costomers done immediately after check in. Unfortunely after we check out and arrived at home, there’s a courtesy call from hotel telling that there’s no two small pillow on the bed after we check out that actually there’s no small pillow on the bed when we enter the room. Is this fair to customer whose spend the money to experience this for their annual vacation?

Review 82:House keeping were a little confusing with delivering of bath towels. They delivered the towels twice at about 1900 hrs to my room without prior notice, and hence disturbed me.

Review 83:Everything is okay

Review 84:Insufficient toiletries and towels provided during our 3 nights stay (eg: Fresh towels given only in the late evening). This should not be the case for a 5-star hotel. Also, kindly change new toilet flush.

Review 85:given only one small bottle of shower gel and shampoo for 2 persons...not sufficient Bath towels are always lacking Th hotel should make all the rooms non smoking. We were given a room on smoking level because we checked in late although we requested for non smoking. But the staff managed to switch rooms for us the next day.

Review 86:Value for money Rooms are clean and well maintained.

Review 87:Pillow was too soft and uncomfortable

Review 88:Very reliable WiFi, nice view for the sea facing rooms, well maintained even though slightly dated, location is fairly near city centre, staff were efficient

Review 89:Housekeeping too slow to deliver towel, waited for an hour and after 3 calls only deliverd to the room.

Review 90:Free Wifi, parking space availibility, complmentary drinks amd fruit in the room.

Review 91:1. The Parking System. They consider their Wedding Guests the same as their Hotel Guests. I had to wait 45 minutes to find a parking space. This info was given to me by the lady at the counter. 2. I was only told of a Local Council Tax at check out. It should be an info when you do the booking of your rooms or at least at check-in.

Review 92:1. The location - central to all the food areas.(Gurney Food Court & Pulau Tikus) 2. The Staff and its efficiency.

Review 93:THE hotel room rate including tax would be cheaper than I paid during the period of my stay (Dec13-16), say at HK$1700 for 3 NIGHTS, including tax payment would be more appropriate.

Review 94:AS ABOVE

Review 95:why force folks to enter pool via segregated changing rooms? annoying, isn't family friendly or the norm when going down to the pool. ever more annoying, pool towels need to be returned before entering the cold lift. no bathrobes provided either.

Review 96:good location. easy parking. big adults pool. kids pool.

Review 97:The walk to the pool. It is a bit weird to walk through the changing room area all the time. Should just open the main entrance. Or re-think the whole system. And the pool bar wasn't open as my kids was wanting to have some snacks...

Review 98:The location at Gurney. And staff at the hotel were all very nice and helpful...

Review 99:Facilities - Fairs - bath tower have to request only deliver to us. Bed - too soft causing back pain (for those with back pain problem and elderly people)

Review 100:swimming and location.

Review 101:on check in, they first told us they couldnt match us with the room we booked for ... and wanted to offer a smoking room. But happily for all, a senior staff came by and got us the room we wanted

Review 102:The rooms are very comfortable, even if a little old fashioned styling. The buffet breakfast is good. There is a kid's playroom which the 4 year old enjoyed immensely and the pool was appreciated especially in a town hotel

Review 103:The towels were not replenished after housekeeping. Need to call to ask and the towels given later smelled horrible as if it was not wash before. Need to do some renovation to the reception area. The wall have stain on it. Not a good first impression.

Review 104:I like the cleanliness of the room and the air condition is at the right temperature

Review 105:We had to wait for abt 2 hrs before the room is ready for us to check-in. We requested for the sea view and had to pay extra for that. Although the hotel is near the beach, forget about swimming there.

Review 106:Near shopping centres and food centres. Just 15 to 20 mins walk to Gurney Paragon and Gurney Plaza. Room was spacious.

Review 107:Service counter not enough staff to serve customer. Long queue while waiting for check in. Check out doesn't have staff to serve, and while i request for the staff to serve us checkout they presented an unfriendly expression to us! Force us to check out fast from the room but while reach to the counter there is nobody to do the work!

Review 108:- it seems that the sales & marketing and front desk are not communicating well. - cant late check out but the house keeping only clean your room at 6pm - chasing guest out by asking what time to check out

Review 109:-Some of the front desk staffs are very accommodating. -The hotel's drivers are excellent

Review 110:actually the room haven't housekeeping but already give us check in. really bad service. that time we already in hurry need to prepare for the dinner.

Review 111:Darkish room - inadequate lighting.

Review 112:Very conveniently situated - half way between town centre & the seaside locations. All amenities required for a short holiday are provided. Daily complimentary soft drinks & fresh apples. Friendly & helpful staff.

Review 113:The rooms were a little dated, but not too bad. My wife went for a massage and she said the lady that gave her massage was not very attentive and we did not go back for anything else from spa. The gym had old treadmills and need to be upgraded.

Review 114:Liked the extras provided with the room, the complimentary room drinks, massage voucher etc... The room was comfortable enough and the pool and gym were handy

Review 115:Room tended to be cleaned very late unless I pt a sign requesting for the room to be cleaned. Wifi connection although free was very unreliable and intermittent.

Review 116:The location, free wifi

Review 117:Service was good.. the breakfast was good and had a good variety.. the rooms are really comfortable.. the view facing the sea is just what u would wish for.. in short, only good things to say about the hotel and their staff.. very well maintained and the location of the hotel is perfect.

Review 118:> Long wait for massage-about 4hrs > Smoking in the Music Lounge > Long walk to Gurney Plaza & open air eating stalls (Hotel should consider free shuttle service every 20 mins perhaps from 0800 - 1000 hrs & again in the evening from 1900 - 2200 hrs

Review 119:> Cleaniness > Spacious > Friendly staff > Safe > Good F&B ourlets > Comfortable > Value for Money

Review 120:Nothing much...

Review 121:Just one night stay...don't think I should say much but it was, overall, an excellent experience. The location is wonderful...right on Gurney Drive. Enjoyed our walk along the beach. The seawater is ultra-polluted but that has nothing to do with the hotel. Polite and smiling staff...generally all positives.

Review 122:The walking distance to the mall. The hotel should provide a shuttle bus

Review 123:The hotel staff especially Rachel - the Assistant Manager is extremely helpful and attentive to the guests' needs. We keep returning back to the hotel because of the warmth and friendliness from the staff

Review 124:TV channels very limited. Might consider installing more channels for little kids such as Cartoon network, Disney Channels, etc

Review 125:Quick response from reception staff Quality of food Cleanliness of the pool Speed of WiFi

Review 126:- price was high for the quality of the hotel. Would be better off staying at Equatorial or Traders. With the same price, you would get soo much more.

Review 127:-location

Review 128:Price a bit high for their old facilities, but yet the hotel is clean.

Review 129:Good location, easy to find hawker food (halal/non halal), sidewalks comfortable for walking

Review 130:the staff are worth people , they dont have any idea about kids behavior and they are thief when you go to booking site it is amount of aprice when you make a checkout you see so much diffrent higher cost and the key room usually not work you must alwase go to lobby and change it , the location also not good , only chaines food near you and at last the furniture of the hotel dont say any thing its in years 1980 and ago

Review 131:only wifi & aircondation

Review 132:Taking public transport is a bit of problem.

Review 133:Hotel is situated between Georgetown and Batu Ferrighi. Breakfast is excellent, close to Gurney shopping & eatery.

Review 134:food was not good at all. i did not get the price quoted in the website. staff was busy complaining among themselves of having to work on raya day

Review 135:location close to shopping mall

Review 136:Nothing. Our stay was lovely.

Review 137:The staff above everything else. They make you feel like family. We would like to thank Rain (Front Desk) for all her assistance during our stay. Pick a room on a higher floor with the sea view - you will not regret it! Very close to Gurney Plaza and central Georgetown and the streetfood vendors.

Review 138:Front office staff no friendly, no towel upon checkin, only provide one towel upon request. Request for king size bed but only provide twin sharing with joint beds. No standard for 5 star rating, please go to holiday villa and check the bed quality for 4star.

Review 139:Pls ensure the cleanliness inside the rooms are well taken care. The front desk staff to be more polite and treat the costumer with good manner even they are underpressure due to peak hours.

The Fine Print

Please note that a local council fee of MYR 3 is chargeable per room per night, and is payable directly to the hotel upon check-in.
