Reviews for Hotel Portonovo Plaza Malecon

Review 1:We were put into a room on the top floor that, when we returned after going for dinner, smelled of raw sewage. We asked to be moved to another room, but they said they were fully booked. They had a bellboy come and spray disinfectant down the shower drain, but as the night progressed, the stink worsened. It was so horrible that by 4am we started to feel physically ill and about to vomit. We made another call to front desk and pleaded for help. They finally said they had a vacant room (apparently a no-show) and sent someone to help us move. The next room was slightly better, but by this time we felt so sick we could not sleep. The next day the manager, Pablo, refused to refund us some of our money. He said he didn't know there was a problem with broken sewer pipes under the building, although the waiter in the buffet room said it was common knowledge that the building needs major plumbing repairs that the owners don't want to pay for. Also, the gym equipment was broken, and the wi-fi was a disaster, very sporadic. Overall, the WORST hotel I have ever been to! Disappointed that Booking.com was unwilling to get us a partial refund, very poor customer service from them. AVOID THIS PLACE!

Review 2:Location is ok, rooms look nice

Review 3:Poor lighting in room and bathroom. Nearly impossible to put on makeup with any accuracy unless during daytime. Found several cockroaches over the course of first two days in room. This was due to the bathroom window above shower being left open by cleaning staff. If there were mesh window screens, this would not have been an issue. Didn't like that the hotel's cancellation policy is one-month in advance of your stay.

Review 4:Good location near south end of the Malecon. Good facility. Great staff. Clean rooms. Nice breakfast included in price.

Review 5:I never had any hot water in my bathroom, not in the shower or on the sink even though I asked about it. It is noisy early in the morning with street noise but not really bothersome.

Review 6:I really liked the location, friendly staff and cleanliness of the building. Nice breakfast served and nice pool.

Review 7:Unsupervised kids in the pool area.

Review 8:Very clean property and excellent location. Also the best free breakfast we've had in Mexico. Thanks to Luis for his service. And Jesus, Fernando and Jaime

Review 9:Cockroaches in room likely due to bathroom window being left open and no bug screens on windows. This is a tropical location so you have to expect some bugs. Lighting in rooms is very low so bring a portable lantern with high lumen output if you need better lighting.

Review 10:Great location near the beginning of the Malecon. Hotel is recently updated. Staff very helpful and pleasant. Excellent price on booking.com. Located on street right behind Hotel El Pescadore.

Review 11:I would have preferred is room had a mini fridge ..... but to solve that we just bought a cooler at the grocery store across the street for a few dollars and that worked perfect !

Review 12:Hotel was exceptional! Staff wonderful and extremely helpful ! If you are looking for a hotel close to everything with great prices and exceptional staff this is the place !

Review 13:Didnt know how to turn on the fan. Don't know if there was a missing remote for it. Sound travels they the doors. So hopefully there are no noisy neighbors at night

Review 14:Looks nice.

Review 15:extrememly bad smell throughout (some kind of polish?) was over bearing. Terrible Wifi couldn't get any work done, no communal working space, no safe in the room and no security on the door. breakfast, nothing fresh, pool is a thimble or dirty water.

Review 16:clean rooms, very pleasant and helpful staff

Review 17:One of the days the front desk woman was what I would describe as "surly", and unwelcoming. Bed had a plastic mattress pad, so made sleeping rather a sweaty experience.

Review 18:Secure parking, rooftop breakfast, location. Elevator.

Review 19:bedding: only sheets! I later learned that I could request a blanket from the front desk. internet: streaky at best. It worked great sometimes and was virtually non-existent at other times.

Review 20:Clean hotel with an accommodating staff. Nearly everything was a manageable walk.

Review 21:Internet was very weak, breaking up all the times. Many calls over 2 days to the desk, not much help. Very frustration wifi.

Review 22:Location. Breakfast is complete, buffet style.

Review 23:Booking led me to believe I was purchasing in Canadian dollars. When I got to the hotel, they charged the same amount but in American dollars. Not good!

Review 24:Very lovely and clean room. Great breakfast.

Review 25:The breakfast was a joke, tables didn't get clean between groups. Wifi doesn't work most of the time. Swimming pool is so small and no place to sit around it. We booked it for 2 days and left after 1. We left at 2pm frustrated and they refused any refund.

Review 26:Staff were friendly

Review 27:First room very noisy. Second room fine until it rained. Very poor WiFi service; No bar; Restaurant only available for breakfast; Rain came into room and in bathroom; air conditioner spewed water over our belongings.

Review 28:Hotel is three blocks from the Malecon

Review 29:Wi-fi connection was poor and bathroom shower door does not close all the way so water gets on the floor every time you take a shower.

Review 30:A great place to stay if you want to be close to down town near shops, restaurants and malecon and a block from the beach. Staff was friendly and very helpful. I will stay again.

Review 31:The hotel wasn't able to book the room we wanted. They said it was based on availability, and we were given a room with two twin beds. We had to pay extra to get a double room which we wanted from the begging.

Review 32:Location was central. It was easy to reach different zones, which was important to us since it was our first time to Puerto Vallarta and wanted to experience everything.

Review 33:If you like firm beds. I don't.

Review 34:The romantic zone is where there's entertainment, places to shop and eat and near malacon. There's a show onthe malacon of locals that swing from axtall pole you must see! The hotel is modern and clean. Friendly and helpful staff.

Review 35:Bathroom very small and the shower door only opens inward causing flooding on the outer floor while turning on the water as it ricocheted off the door.

Review 36:Air conditioning did not work well and no hot water.

Review 37:Cleanliness

Review 38:the pool is to small and not many places to sit around

Review 39:The WIFI is the only thing to let the hotel down.

Review 40:The location and amenities on offer.

Review 41:It was annoying that the wifi did not work.

Review 42:Location, good breakfast and friendly, helpful staff.

Review 43:Cock roaches in bathroom and bedroom when we arrived. Internet was spotty at best.

Review 44:Staff, location

Review 45:Location / Price / Newly renovated

Review 46:Wifi was almost non-existent for most of our stay (3 nights)

Review 47:Great location. Close to everything. Supermarket across street.

Review 48:The place was so tiny. No place to unpack. No closet space Beds felt like wood-planks

Review 49:Bathroom was clean

Review 50:Had trouble with wifi the first day

Review 51:Great location and service

Review 52:Super small room

Review 53:Super friendly and helpful staff

Review 54:The WiFi was really weak at certain points in the day, but I could always eventually log on. The pool was ok, nothing special but nice to have. The beds weren't the comfiest.

Review 55:Very clean and modern, great location! The grocery store across the street was really convenient for saving some cash on meals. The room was always clean when I returned to my room.

Review 56:Confusion in booking the room via Booking.com. I requested a third bed, which Booking.com TWICE confirmed, but hotel informed me as an aside in a reply to another question that they had no capacity for extra bed in rooms. Still waiting to see if the usually reliable Booking.com corrects the ambiguity in its app page for this hotel that suggests it is possible to request an extra bed. Also, air conditioning was excessive the first night. Light blankets would have been welcome.

Review 57:Larger room than many in this price range. Roof pool, one block from ocean, beach towels provided. Easy access to Malecon seaside walk. Plenty of eating and shopping close by. Public transit quick and easy to Zona Romantica.

Review 58:Modern but spare; not much character. Pool area was particularly spare and not inviting. No safe in room.

Review 59:Location close to the Centro and the Malecon. Helpful, English speaking staff. Clean, modern; everything worked.

Review 60:room too tiny, beds too hard, pillows too big and hard, noise from road below, restaurant lacking, pool too small and no view from rooftop, elevator sometimes did not work, restaurant insufficient

Review 61:coziness, cleanliness, friendliness

Review 62:My daughter's room developed a sewer type smell and the front desk person said this was the first they heard that, but they never did anything to check it.

Review 63:Location is good. Staff was helpful. Rooms were clean but small and free internet was great.
