Reviews for Koh Mak Ao Kao White Sand Beach
Review 1:Staff could be better in English. But the attitude was friendly and helpful.
Review 2:Great location. Great beach. Really great food at the resort (we tried a lot of places on the island and Ao Kao was one of the best). Stayed in the Honeymoon suite and that was worth the money :)
Review 3:Far away from restaurants/bars. Restaurant can improve, for example with fresh fish exposition. 5% charge for cc payments is too much and should be specified when making reserevation.
Review 4:Perfect location in one of the best beaches. Very professional staff. Very confy and big room. Nice cocktail bar.
Review 5:very friendly stuff ... clean and quite place ... ideal for relaxing, ideal for families too ... beach is clean and nice for swimming and walk .... food and drink good and not expensive.... lots of activities like tennis court, kayaking, sailing catamaran, trampoline
Review 6:Two cockroaches in the bathroom our first night... Lots of ants outside and the sea wasn't as good as on the side where you get off the boat.
Review 7:Cozy bungalow right by the beach. Very friendly staff. Easy to go to the beautiful island Rayang.
Review 8:Shower was very bad. Swimming pool was far away from sea and it was very little and no Services at all.
Review 9:Breakfast and the feelings in the morning was very good. Staff was very kindly and helpfull.
Review 10:Traveled with My husband and 2 adult children .We all loved the quiet. Nice bungalows just steps from the beach. Great snorkling in front of resort and equipment free .While most staff not very fluent in English they were fabulous and took great care of us. Food was very good at reasonable price. I would definitely go again.
Review 11:Food The only place on island where is no buffet breakfast although theycollect money. Some poor food instead, gave us menu without pricesbecause meals are more expensive when booking in advance :). Smallchoice, food not fresh. Buy some medicine for your stomach.Staff Don't speak english, except 2 persons. They pretend they are nice.. as long as you don't ask them for anything (check other reviews). We asked to change our room for lower standard and better view - they said it was already booked. It was not. Next day when more people checked out and we ask again - they asked us to find other place to stay! Facility Most of the resorts offer free kayak, bikes, bicycles, swimming pool, etc. Here? Forget :). You can watch some DVDs on TV older than this website. Room Poor view, photos are old. Many trees in front. In the night all lights off, no one cleans the beach (which is very small btw.) and water not deep. Sheet not clean, we had blood on ours once! When asked for extra bathroom towel, they gave me beach towel.. Quite far to the shop. No WiFi in some rooms.
Review 12:Nothing
Review 13:Parts of the facilities need a refreshment (pool table not in shape , no badminton or ping pong or table Football as advertised)
Review 14:Great Location, friendly staff, lots of Space , very few people , ok food
Review 15:On the beach you have to be careful, in the grass near the sand can be something like bitumen. We all time washed the feet brushes.
Review 16:Great hotel! Friendly, helpful staff. Clean and comfortable bungalows. I liked the service. Delicious food in the restaurant. Stunning views of the sea opened directly from the bungalows, which are on the shore.
Review 17:We stayed 6 nights in Ao Kao. Great localisation. Amazing beach just next to resort. Extremly helpful staff, so so nice people;) Fantastic food and very comfortable bungalows.
Review 18:NO problems with the resort at all, maybe a few small maintainance issues like bathroom door that didn't close and a showshowerhead that was clogged. no big deal and I fixed it myself coz I was in the mood for it. I'm 100% sure they would have fixed it if I'd say anything
Review 19:Beach with the finest sand on the island. very nice place with excellent overall service. I love their bbq at evenin!
Review 20:Restaurants or shops nearby are probably 20-minute walk from the hotel. With a small child, it is tough to go there by foot under really hot weather. We had to rent a motor cycle which charged 100 THB only for one hour. The hotel should provide free bicycle service.
Review 21:The Cambodian staff are friendly and helpful. The beach is very quiet.
Review 22:The bed mattresses are metal= rock hard and while the online picturesshow modern bungalows with white walls and a wall mounted tv, all of thepictures are actually of their one "HONEYMOON" bungalow. The"deluxe beachfront bungalows" are actually traditional wood, with 19" tvs on a wicker stand too far away to see from the beds. Our "beachfront" bungalow view was actually a 40 foot widepath/lawn with no grass, then some trees, then the ocean(no beach)at least 60 feet from the bungalow. When we complained, the aussiemanager explained that it was "classified as beachfront" andshrugged. For $105 cad it is a bonafide bait and switch, unless you getthe honeymoon suite!! We left after 1 night and moved to Sea Breezewhich had nice soft beds, a better view of the sea, a nice infinitypool, a huge breakie and was only $95 cad/$85usd.
Review 23:The beach to the left of the restaurant is nice but infested with sandflies (the whole isl is), however they leave a bottle of free coconutoil out for you to apply before you suntan (hint do your whole bodythese flies fly!). The cambodian staff are hardworking and nice (noenglish), but not trained in their tasks. Breakfast was tiny and illtimed by the staff, it was a joke. We were left free water andcoffee/tea every day though, we had a fridge and the room was large(aprox 400sq feet) with a decent bathroom. Turns out there was a beachbar at the opposite side of the property but we were not informed of anyamenities even the golf carts for rent. We would have spent far moremoney there if we'd known. Weird business practice huh?
Review 24:The only bad thing was that the wifi was working slowly at times, other than that it's a great resort and I'd love to come back!
Review 25:The design of the honeymoon suite is amazing! The view was straight to the beach and the shower had an open ceiling looking right up to the sky. There is also a shaded area on top of the roof where you could sit and relax. Many activities available like canoeing, biking, football, snorkeling, watching movies and more.
Review 26:Sandflies Oder Bungalow than shown in the pictures while reservations A lot oft stones und not deep sea. Swimmingpool nearly impossible A lot oft waste in the beach
Review 27:Friendly stuff Motorbikes for rent
Review 28:I like a hard bed but this was like a table, no satellite TV, restaurant food was pretty good but closes at 20.00...
Review 29:Staff were fantastic, position on the (great) beach is lovely, good sized but slightly dated room.
Review 30:the hotel didnot pick us up as as they offer us. We wait more than 40 min - we called the hotel 3 times and they said 5 min but they didnot come. When we finaly arrived to the hotel they just have bad excuses and didnot offer us a drink themselves. One day we make an appointment to rent a golf car from 11 o'clock - after 30 min waiting the car was still not free for our use. The staff didnot act or offer us alternativ.
Review 31:We booked a beach bungalow & on arrival we were upgraded to the honeymoon beach bungalow...wow. The beach is beautiful and the staff are fantastic & extremely helpful. Great location. I can't wait to go back!
Review 32:Many sand flies in the beaches of Koh Mak. We went back full of bites very irritant that lasted many days.
Review 33:Desert beaches, very quiet and relaxing. Restaurant with good variety and reasonable prices. The island is so small that everything is at easy reach by bicycle only.
Review 34:Nothing to do on a night at this resort. The beach bar needs some life putting in it.
Review 35:Stopped here for 8 nights and had total R&R. The island is very quiet however that is what we wanted. Unless you are going to hire a moped every day opt to pay for the breakfast at the resort. There is a short walk up a road to the nearest places to eat and to be honest they are all the same quality and price. You may as well book before than pay each day. There is not much to do at the resort. You pay to play pool, hire snorkel gear and kayak. Don't make the mistake we did and sunbath on the beach as the whole island has a problem with sand flies. This accomodation is worth the money, the room on the beach front was lovely however the electric and wifi went off most days between 9am and 1pm. The staff are lovely and the food ok.
Review 36:- during low season where we visited the menu card is quite limited on both breakfast and main dishes. - decay to be observed everywhere, due to lack of maintenance - 3% service charge on VISA payment - need bike or motorbike to get around - no TV in our bungalow, DVD only (but frankly who would need it?) - may be busy during high season
Review 37:- nicest beach on the island as far as I could notice - nice personnel from cambodia - personnel is cleaning the beach in the morning before most people get up, including bug control (sand fleas) - some restaurants in the vicinity (by bike or motorbike) - some new bungalows just built - was quiet during low season as I expected
Review 38:It is a nice place to be at, but perhaps they should better look at some tiny details such as the curtains that provide privacy is not adequate to cover the whole room, so people can still see inside your room especially at night! Some of the mosquito screens fall off and need to be tightened back, to prevent mosquitoes in. And although there is no need for TV in a place like this, it would be nice if on a rainy night, the TV has some channels on it to watch the news. The staff at the restaurant also needs to be a bit more polite to potential customers. When I turned up with no booking at low-season, they gave me an exorbitant price and an attitude that discourages me from staying. I then proceeded to book online which cuts off 1/3 of the price. It would be nice if they can politely explain that the price is x but if i book online, i could get it for less instead of having a slightly rude attitude about turning up at their place. They softened a bit and was nicer once they saw my online booking, but one of the staff still needs to learn customer relations.
Review 39:The beachfront property is probably the best in the island after visiting other places. There is an adjacent low-key outdoor bar (not the restaurant one) that offers the most amazing sunset view. It is relaxing to be at this place, and while the island is gorgeous, it is also okay to just stay here and just enjoy the property. The rooms are adequate although a lot of bugs do come in. I also like the bar and the kayak rentals. I got lost and left the kayak in another place, since i went passed by the resort miles off, and they were okay to just pick it up from there the next day.
Review 40:This is not the resorts fault, but the beach was covered with trash. It was everywhere.
Review 41:My bungalow was so cute. The bed was so comfortable. It was very clean. The aircon worked great. Loved my bungalow. Although not much was going on, but this was probably since it was the off-season. The staff was very accommodating and very kind. Very enjoyable.
Review 42:The bed was too hard otherwise I would have stayed longer. The location on the island is also not optimal when it is windy and the waves are high.
Review 43:Excellent staff, friendly and help full that adds to the charm of the place. A perfect place to come and relax. Nice bungalows and a relaxing beach.
Review 44:We stayed here during low season. A lot of the facilities were unavailable, such as beach bar. In their website they also advertise that for example bikes and snorkels are free of charge, this was not true and the staff did nothing to solve it, except they gave bikes for a few hours. beach was dirty and there were a lot of sharp stones and junk. I even found a sharp metal net in the water during low tide. I didn't want to swim there. nearest shop was quite far away by walking, like other restaurants. This place needs a swimming pool. Wifi signal was bad in our room, but clear at the pier close to Makathanee resort, which is several kilometers away. Maybe their antennas are misplaced. They turned of the wifi around 8pm, which was really annoying, since there are no TV channels on the TV, so you can only enjoy some (not so good) DVD movies.
Review 45:Clean rooms, bottled water delivered in the morning, balcony cleaned every day, good food at restaurant (price level is cheap), great views, nice garden. low season price level is really affordable, free pick up and from and to pier.
Review 46:All of the staff was so friendly and serviceminded, best of the best. Fantastic food, beautiful location, good drinks and a great atmosphere.
Review 47:The staff was extremely kind and friendly and went out of their way to make sure we had an enjoyable visit.
Review 48:nothing
Review 49:Top Management, Top Lokation, we will go back to koh mak.
Review 50:Nothing on mind.
Review 51:Staff, staff and staff. Friendly, helpfull, welcoming. The best.
Review 52:Just the perfect spot on Koh Mak. Friendly and helpful staff, we felt very welcomed!
Review 53:Amazing place! ***** Super staff! ***** Great service! *****
Review 54:Bar closes at 9 and nothing to do at all as you are quite cut off
Review 55:Beach location very goodGood breakfast and all food good
Review 56:very friendly and helpfull staff very clean beach and resort massage at the hotel SPA is fantastic
Review 57:Wifi in rooms was a bit spotty at times.
Review 58:Bungalows right on the beach. Great views of the sunset. Extremely friendly staff and a great cook.
Review 59:no night security
Review 60:formidable staff great positiv Attention
Review 61:Nice and clean rooms. beautiful location on the beach. Very friendly Staff.
Review 62:overall a very nice resort, pleasant atmosphere and location
Review 63:Sand fly
Review 64:Beach, room and facility
Review 65:nothing bad to say.. Everything okay
Review 66:the staf were fantastic so kind helpful..nice quiet low key place to just rest relax and refresh yourself ...
Review 67:Air conditioning was not so good, manager upgraded us
Review 68:Location ,food, staff
Review 69:Nothing. Next year we will be back
Review 70:Staff is very friendly, bungalows are clean en very comfortable...
Review 71:Remote and private with loads to do
Review 72:Staff were very friendly and helpful, everyone working in the resort had a good level of English. The beach was beautiful.
Review 73:The ants
Review 74:It was so untouched & unlike anywhere else I have ever been
Review 75:dirt , algae on the beach need to clean everyday it would be perfect.
Review 76:Beach is private
Review 77:Weather!!!!!
Review 78:Hotel facilities, location, accommodation and food.
Review 79:We were a little frustrated that there were signs for cocktails, seafood BBQ, steak house and Thai massage on the site of the resort and it wasn't explained to us that because we were out of season these were not available for us, which was understandable but would have been nice to have been told before we got excited about them. Due to how basic the infrastructure is the water in our room was brown on occasion. Out of season the menu is quite small and basic, try the seafood restaurant that comes to pick you up and serves amazing fresh food in a stunning location. There are also a few of the little places on the side of the road that are open and you can access on the scooter. Our favourite was on the road heading towards the nearest pier, you pass the temple in your left and on the right is a place that has restaurant painted on the front of it on the bricks, with a corrugated iron roof, with lots of tractors to the left of it, we had some of the tastiest and cheapest food from our 3 week trip to Thailand it's a must to go to!!
Review 80:Overall for the cost (we were in low season) it's an excellent place to stay. The bungalow by the beach was clean and comfortable, with air con. The beach is lovely, a bit rocky under feet when you went into the sea. Staff were friendly and helpful. Food was ok but a little limited on choice. It's in a good location with a good access road to be able to explore Ko Mak by bike or scooter, both of which are cheap to rent. Make sure you call in to see Ball at the coffee shop at the entrance to the resort, he has maps of the island and is very passionate about helping people enjoy their stay on Ko Mak and the coffee is amazing. We really enjoyed our stay here and would recommend if your after somewhere relaxing, comfortable and clean, it's not the high end of luxury but you wouldn't expect that for the price. They also provide a free lift from the pier to the hotel.
Review 81:The bathrooms were poorly designed. There was only one towel rack and a complete lack of hooks for hanging clothes. The toilet was positioned directly adjacent to the shower and the beds were much too hard for comfortable sleeping. Because of the tidal nature of the small swimming area it would be a much better resort if it had a swimming pool.
Review 82:The huts were very clean and the resort manager ,Chain, was always obliging, friendly and very professional. He impressed me greatly. His young staff were wonderful. They were always happy and couldn't do enough to please us. We loved the beach bar. Mr Kong was a lovely man.
Review 83:Weak shower water pressure, some rubbish along Ao Kao beach (when you walk beyond the area maintained by this resort).
Review 84:Greatest resort with impeccable service, location (within Koh Mak) and restaurant.
Review 85:Wi-Fi did not function all the time but it seems like it was for the whole island.
Review 86:Very friendly staff and lots of things to do. Nice with massage just 10 m from the shore, listening to wawes coming in.
Review 87:Quite far from the main road ,need to rent a bike or motorcycle to go another place in this island.
Review 88:Many kind of facilities to play .I.e. table tennis, volleyball, chess , little beach bar, massage and there also have quiet beach ..Good to stay here if you are really need to relax.
Review 89:Nothing to complain about actually.
Review 90:Its simply a nice place on a relaxing island. In terms of comfort or cleanliness there's never much to be expected in such a remote edge of the world. Same for the Internet connection, don't expect it to work well anywhere in any place on Koh mak. Anyways I'd like to state that this place offers some of the best service and has one of the nicest beaches on the island. The beach bar with its friendly staff and excellent Bbq is one of the places I spent most time at.
Review 91:there're not many a la carte menu. Delicious enough to eat. problem about under voltage that happen a lot of area of koh mak (it's not resort's problem). Light water flow(just a little bit). But totally we love this place and happy all the time that stay there.
Review 92:Good location and scenery, have all facilities you need.Nice staff. The resturant and beach bar have very good atmosphere.About food,we like BBQ seafood the most, very delicious. You can see some little fishes in the sea in front of resort,Sunset veiw is really excellent, like heaven on earth.
Review 93:Some of the staff don't speak any English. There was a tarantula and a smaller spider in my bungalow. I wanted to go to the Rayang island but the motor of the boat was broken. One of the staff members said, he'll go buy a new one and we can go there on Saturday. That never happened and he didn't inform me about that. They don't answer your email before your arrival and that makes you feel very uneasy when you're going to the island and don't know if you'll be picked up from the pier or not. Luckily I came from Koh Chang and on the pier in Koh Mak there was an info desk right in the pier and a nice lady called to the resort to pick me up. If you decide to add your meals that you eat in the restaurant to the final bill (remember that you'll be charged 3 % when you use a credit card), remember to ask a receipt if you pay your lunch/dinner with cash after you've eaten. I was almost charged twice for one meal even tho' I had paid it but they had added it to the final bill.
Review 94:The staff was mostly nice and when I came, I had a coconut juice as a welcoming gift. My bungalow was big and just 20 metres from the sea. The food was good in the restaurant. They have many bikes (also lady style) for 150 bahts for one day to rent. The beach is good and there is no need for any swimming shoes. Usually the sea is so clear that you can see the few stones that are under the water. There was every day two complimentary water bottles waiting on the bungalow terrace.
Review 95:The beach should clean more often.see garbage brought from the sea sitting by the shore.:(((( Let's save this beautiful island.
Review 96:Breakfast very yummy. ... massage very relaxing :)))
Review 97:We were not impressed with the beach. Very rocky to get in for a swim. The bed was not comfortable.
Review 98:Lots of fun things to do, including bikes, pingpong, trampoline, hammocks. Food was good. Nice beach for walking along and great views.
Review 99:No working TV channels only a DVD player. The shower in the bathroom was very hit and miss - sometimes it worked, often it didn't. This however is a typical problem I have found on Koh Mak and not just at Ao Kao resort.
Review 100:Beautiful resort to just relax and unwind. Fantastic beach when the tide is in. Good breakfast-buffet included in the room-rate. Bungalows clean and comfortable.
Review 101:Nothing.
Review 102:The location is awesome... definitely the best beach for swimming on Koh Mak. I would move there in a heartbeat! All the staff at Ao Kao are lovely and you just can't help but smile and chat with them.. great people.
Review 103:The food served at dinner is so bad, really terrible, no spices, salt or pepper, tastes nothing which is understandable since the chef is the girl at reception, also waitress. The hygiene i the kitchen is terrible, they keep the back door open so you can see everything while passing through. They "recyle the food" leftovers from beakfast is used at diner time and vice versa. You could eat a the hotel next door or at Koh Mak resort restaurant.
Review 104:Best beach on the island. Nice stuff, good breakfast especially if you are a vegetarian, relatively clean bungalows ( Thai standard)
Review 105:The staff was very friendly, very good food at the restaurant, there are motorbikes for rent, nice beach at the resort, everything was clean, perfectly for some relaxing days :)
Review 106:Nothing really
Review 107:Nice location. Plenty of things to do at the resort. Kayaking, footballfield, volleyball net etc. Great staff and a good atmosphere.
Review 108:Perfect location, with the best beach on Koh Mak. Great snorkeling near your comfortable bungalow :) Professional and friendly staff. Great restaurant with tasty food and large portions.
Review 109:Some rather strange rules like room not cleaned if you do not put your key in a box in reception?? When I asked why the room had not been cleaned, the staff at reception seemed very puzzled as if I was asking for something very unusual, or not being able to order certain drinks and being told I have to go fetch them from the beach bar ( which is not part of the hotel) and a lovely tv in the room but no tv channels available.
Review 110:I was upgraded to a beautiful bungalow with a lovely ocean view and was given an early check in. The staff were friendly and helpful.
Review 111:Somewhat far away from the small shopping area. Would help if the resort had a few bicycles for the guests. Breakfast has limited options, especially for vegetarians.
Review 112:Friendly staff. Clean, spacious rooms. Step out of the bungalows and find yourself on the beach! Nice little beach, cleared of litter by the resort staff.
Review 113:Little bit far from shops. Poor choice of food for breakfast. And beware of the mosquitoes and sand flies at the beach. Be prepared with anti-insect spray or something else.
Review 114:Very beautiful place, quiet and good quality for the price. Nice and responsive personnel. Can go snorkeling just from the beach.
Review 115:The staff was very helpful and we felt welcome from the first day. The Resort provided free transport from the pier. The resorts restaurant served tasty thai and international meals at great value. The resort has a private beach and the surroundings are perfect in terms of relaxation and activities aswell. Scooters and kayaks could be rented at very affordable prices. We also borrowed snorkling equipment and sunbeds free of charge. We planned to stay here for 2 nights but ended up staying for a week. This island is probaby one of few remaining "hidden pearls" and we will definitely return to this wonderful resort when we revisit the island.
Review 116:- Sheets not very clean. - Not alot activities to do when low-season. - Most beaches on the island had alot of trash on it.
Review 117:- Nice clean beach at hotel. - Roomy beachfront bungalows. - Friendly staff.
Review 118:Facilities limited as Some were closed due to off season and the night bar was only open 2 of the 4 nights we were there.
Review 119:We stayed in Ao Kao last month in the low season. At the time there was a lot of rain .The resort is Nice and very quiet. There seemed to very minimal staff at this time of the season. One poor woman worked relentlessly from breakfast to late evening serving in the restaurant every day and she was the only one that spoke English at the time. Someone came in at Night ( presume the manager) who spoke good English and bills etc could be sorted out then. They also could arrange travel arrangements .We had a bungalow that was nice, clean and tidy and had lots of character. The staff were polite and if you had a problem would endeavour to help. If you want a very quiet and peaceful place to visit away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the world then this is it.
Review 120:In the rainy season, swimming seems mostly only possible at high tide.
Review 121:The resort lies at one of the most stunning beaches of Koh Mak. If someone likes to be close to nature, wants to swim, walk, and relax, then this is the perfect place to be. The staff is warm, welcoming, and attentive.
Review 122:Older villa leaked during rain & buildings in a state of decay. Needs maintenance
Review 123:Relaxed beachside resort, looks worn out but is well worth a stay. Food & drink prices are good value & food quality very good.
Review 124:Hmmm... Maybe the beaches around could be a bit more clean by morningtime? But we cant blame Ao Kao white sand beach resort for that - theirbeach is quite decent and with a pretty nice spot to swim.
Review 125:We really enjoyed our stay. We were thinking about staying 3 days and,by the end, we stayed 9. The island is awesome (and believe me, I'vebeen in many, Thailand included). If you want to be alone, looking forthe feeling of a desert island, away from tourists and noise - you gotit. If you feel like socializing and do whatever people do when inholidays, well... You got it too. Coming to the resort, we reallyenjoyed how stay. Chen (the manager) made everything easy for us -including connections to the island and a ride (on a nice sidecar) fromthe pier to the resort; the staff (Fai, pk, Sam...) is lovely; thebungalows are amazing, and many of them have a great view to the gulfsea; food is not as rare as the island or the resort but it's quitenice, specially the barbecue in the bar, around sunset. And whatever youwant to do, like going to other awesome small islands near by, comesvery easy to plan in 30 min... Just ask the staff and you'll be in a'Mai pen rai' (no worries) state of mind. Ah... Internet is fastand reliable wherever in the resort. So, to cut the long story short, Iwill only add that we'll be back here whenever we head to Thai Gulfarea. To have another peaceful blast...
Review 126:Rooms not serviced.
Review 127:Great location, relaxing environment. Simple but clean and comfortable. Breakfast good. Staff kind. Restaurant not great but not bad.
Review 128:Restaurant food was mediocre (better available elsewhere on the island). Lots of rubbish on the beaches not next to resorts (this is a problem for Ko Mak generally, not specifically Ao Kao).
Review 129:Resort has plenty of things to hire / do. Fun bar. Next to a well kept bit of beach. Helpful staff.
Review 130:Lack of management, bad treatment of guests. Room is not up to the standard we expected, air-con out of function, room was not clean. We complained to the staff, but had to change hotel without any compensation.
Review 131:Nice beach, ok breakfest.
Review 132:Service at the bar was a bit slow and the bbq was not as good as itcould have been.
Review 133:Amazing location, beautiful, very good food and super fast service.Friendly, great for young children, nice to have air-con, good value.Liked that there were kayaks and motorbikes to rent for cheap, gooddrink specials at the beach bar, free use of dartboard, trampoline andbeach towels. Great internet wi-fi connection speeds.
