Reviews for Refúgio das Camélias
Review 1:It was the "dry" season, yet proved extremely humid in the morning. A puddle of water would form below the window every morning. Location is way too isolated if you plan to go out often, the road is very steep and small and windy. So if you do not want to cook your own food, look closer to the coast.
Review 2:The furniture quality. The facilities provided (fridge, cooking items). The very reasonable price given the quality of the accommodations.
Review 3:We thought that the beds are too hard. It hasn't be very comfortable at all and didn't allow a good relaxation. The area is very steep (not a problem for us, but good to know).
Review 4:It is a nice place to stay in Northern Madeira in a quiet surrounding with really good equipped kitchens for self-catering. The family is so helpful and nice, we felt very pleasant there. The living room is great to enjoy the view over the area. It is really close to Santana where you can find several restaurants and a big supermarket.
Review 5:At some points vague instructions on getting there
Review 6:Quiet, laid back, relaxed environment at the Top of the village. Ideal to hide away from the world, not even easy to find. Nice garden and well separated balconies. The air is much cooler than by the coast due to the higher elevation, but it can be an advantage.
Review 7:xxx
Review 8:Very friendly invitation by owners. Clean nice rooms. Nice view to the valley and to the opposite hills. Quiet place to relax and a good position to make trips to different parts of the island.
Review 9:No internet available.
Review 10:Very good location with beautiful surrounding. Close to Santana town, walking paths and lewadas. The rooms were in perfect condition, kitchen well equipped. Very friendly people. Beautiful place worth recommending.
Review 11:The owners are very nice people. They met us at the airport and were driving with their car ahead and made sure we didn´t lose somewhere with our rented car :) They welcomed us in their house very warmly, we got a traditional Madeiran cake and bananas upon arrival and they also invited us to their wine cellar for a glass of tasty home made wine, which was very nice! It is obvious they make everything with love and they wish their guests feel comfortably during their stay. House is very well located, apartment and kitchen is fully equipped and house is very close to the interesting village Santana which is worth a visit for traditional thatched houses. Pico Ruivo is also very easily reachable from this village. I recommend to do some treks to the peak. There are stunning views from the top of the mountain. If I go to Madeira next time, I will definitely stay in this house again. Thank you once again for wonderful care!
Review 12:Some condensation from the bathroom made the room feel very slightly damp after a shower. Also rather limited hot water supply as only a small hot water tank. This was pointed out to us by the owners on our arrival.
Review 13:Very friendly and helpful owners.Quiet and scenic location.
Review 14:we were there in early April and despite of additional heater in the room stayed a bit chilly
Review 15:location: close to the airport, however close to hiking trails, shopping center for selfcatering in driving distance; facilities and stunning view from the balcony of each room; free parking
Review 16:Just a shame about the weather.
Review 17:The owners met us at the airport, made sure we were settled at the property and then even took us to the local supermarket 5 miles away. Throughout our stay the owners could not do enough for us. Location was great, property very comfortable.
Review 18:I think this would only apply to winter visits but the only thing we could fault is there could be slightly better heating for winter visits and the hot water in the shower ran out a little bit too quickly.
Review 19:We had such a warm welcome it was the perfect arrival in Madeira. What an amazing place it was. everything we could possibly need in our self contained unit too plus a balcony with an amazing mountain view such that we could check out the weather at the mountain tops. We were the only people staying here and it was a little on the cool side so we didn't use the other amazing rooms but can imagine we would in the summer or if sharing with a big group of us. Although we considered using buses to get here i'm glad we hired a car as didn't see any buses around this area.
Review 20:The weather during our stay, rauin every day (but that was outside anyones control) We had a car and so could travel to other parts of the island and the poor weather did not spoil our enjoyment of this lovely resort
Review 21:Location and facilities absolutely superb and a wonderfully warm welcome from the owners who invited us to treat the place as our own. We had free range of all the facilities. We only stayed 3 nights before moving on to our main location in Funchal but we shall definitely plan to return.
Review 22:Attention. To rent this place, you need a car !
Review 23:Really nice appartment with a beautiful view from the balcony of the appartment. Great welcoming from the host.
Review 24:We had a beautiful time in the Refúgio das Camélias. It is clean and spacious house with awe inspiring mountain and valley views. The family is very welcoming and helpful. The wine is tasty! The house is located in a few minutes driving from Faial and Santana villages but it is also within a reasonable distance from anything. We would be happy to come back!
Review 25:Very nice quiet place!
Review 26:You need to be the first to take your shower to get warm water
Review 27:Beautiful house
Review 28:Garden and view
Review 29:Having to leave Madeira :(
Review 30:Superb location with an outstanding view. The room couldn't have been any better equipped. The owners were so friendly and really gave a 'home from home' feeling to there stunning property. The madeira wine testing was a nice little touch. The owners will make you feel so appreciated, I can't recommend this place enough! The location is absolutely brilliant, it's perfectly central to all of Madeiras best walks. There are several levadas walks close by, with Pico Ruivo a very short distance. Pico Do Arieiro is currently closed, Pico Ruivo is an easy walk and takes you to the highest peak in Madeira. The drive is very easy from this hotel to Pico Ruivo, straight up the hill and head towards Santana, then head for Achada do Teixera (Not mapped on Garmin). I found google maps navigation far better for madeira btw.
Review 31:Nothing worth mentioning.
Review 32:A beautifully built house run by a wonderful Portuguese family. Thelocation was ideal for us: off-the-beaten path with a magnificent viewof the mountains, yet very close to the happenings in Santana (and majorsupermarket Continente). Overall, a perfect place to stay while visitingthis amazing island. Highly recommended!
Review 33:The best accommodation for the money. Marvelous owner who shows and tells you everything you need. Spacious and very well-designed rooms with balcony, kitchenette, additional kitchens and shared living-rooms all with amazing mountain view. Great flower-garden in front of the house. Good selection of wines. This is Madeira we loved and we wished to stay longer! Next time...
Review 34:Very friendly hosts, quiet place, outstanding views, fully equipped kitchen. Everything was nice, clean and sweet-smelling in one word perfect.
