Reviews for Kussharo Genya Youth Guesthouse

Review 1:The owner or staff not so friendly, Quite far from any restaurant or convenient store, additional dinner provided with pricey tags

Review 2:Free wifi, comfortable bed, clean room, clean bathroom

Review 3:it's a bit out of the way. The owners will collect and drop you off at the station. Yet once there, there's quite a bit of walking on roads to get to the lake areas. Ideally, would be good to have a car, or be able to hire a bike, to get to Mashu Lake and see more of the area.

Review 4:The building is really well designed and makes for a great hostel. The dorm rooms are well thought out and well heated, and there's a nice social area. The food is amazing, caught/hunted/smoked by the owner who then prepares it all himself. I'd really recommend the Ainu museum not far away and the beautifulKotan-no-yu onsen; built and maintained by Ogawa Juyo, who also carves & draws beautiful owls from his shop behind the onsen.

Review 5:1. Arrived at 3pm, which is the official check-in time stated upon booking but was greeted with deep frowns and was told to return in half-an-hour. Cleaners were still at work, vacuuming and cleaning the rooms. 2. Common resting area on the second floor was a smoking area. 3. Breakfast was served buffet style but servings were not sufficient as there were about 15 guests (approx. 7 men) at meal time.

Review 6:1. The architecture of the building and its unusual interior space. 2. Dinner was delicious. 3. Common resting area on the first floor was cozy. 4. We stayed in a 4-pax Loft room with just 2 guests, therefore space was enough for two but could be cramp for 4 pax.

Review 7:Nothing

Review 8:The guests and the staff were great. I especially recommend the delicious food. The guesthouse was nicely furnished and decorated. The excursion to see the sunrise was a good surprise.

Review 9:The house is clean, quiet, and very interesting(the shape of the house, ^_^ ). The food is delicious. The boss and his wife are very kind. They recommend a very interesting travel route. And when we visited the island and the hot spring too late, the boss drived his car and picked up us! That touched me so much!! Thank you very much!! It is a very very good hotel!!

Review 10:Nothing around. Apart from beautiful scenery

Review 11:Helpful n friendly staff. Got everything you need. Abut remote. If you got a car n you want a quiet evening. It's a good one

Review 12:The hostel is far away from everything, if you are backpacking like I was and you have no car, there is literallly nothing you can do from there! The owner was not very helpful when we asked for suggestions what we should do and how we can get access to the buses etc. Also bicycle rental of 1500 yen is very expensive. They don't allow you to use the kitchen, wich was very annoying.

Review 13:Comfortable beeds, interesting architecture of the building. Owner picks you up at mashu train station if you call him.

Review 14:Staff were not particularly helpful and didn't seem to want to help much Quite rude although it maybe that things were lost in translation Not much English speaking Very far from anything. Shops, buses etc I wouldn't stay here unless you have a car.

Review 15:Generally quite clean. Big hostel. Not too expensive.

Review 16:The common bath is a bit too small.

Review 17:Best atmosphere during my 2 week trip in Hokkaido. We could feel at home and enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere. Private room with sink is an additional comfort. The food was far above my expectations. After dinner the owner gave us a full overview of the places to visit around.

Review 18:The price could be cheaper if we could contact the operator directly. Anyway, we may need to pay a premium for convenience!

Review 19:we felt the warm welcome upon arrival. The room is huge and accommodate up to 4 people though only two of us.

Review 20:The smell from the kitchen comes into the dining room, which is also used as a living room. The bathroom was not convenient. The tub was very small. It only fitted two people. If you don't have a car, it will not be convenient at all. Not recommended, even though the staff offered to give a lift. I would prefer to stay close to the station or the travel attraction. But this offers none of them.

Review 21:The house's design was beautiful.

Review 22:The room was a little small for 4 of us with our big luggages, but we managed to make do with the space. The staircase up to the attic to the beds for 2 of us were pretty steep, so do be careful.

Review 23:We stayed in a four-sharing room with an attic that housed 2 beds. It was a fun room. The dinner and breakfast included in the half-board was tasty.

Review 24:The shower facility is the onsen, so do take note of this if not you would get a shock when you arrive here. No towels. Expensive for the facilities. The room was small, i booked the family room, there was two beds at the "top" level. The ladder to climb up was really steep and high so it was pretty scary to climb up and down.

Review 25:The architecture

Review 26:This property is better for those with a car or who have time for a couple of nights. Bike renrtal is available and reasonable.

Review 27:We loved the meals provided by this hostel - book in advance. Healthy and very tasty, and excellent value. We liked that this youth guesthouse is vedy eco-aware. Staff are friendly and there is a family atmosphere with lots for children to do. We did not have a car so pick up from Mashu station was appreciated. Phone the day prior - If not there, give them a call.

Review 28:-the hosts not really welcoming, little english and no communication. - the very isolated place without a mean of transport. -the fact that they don t give you any information about what to do around, so you have to find by yourself. -the fact that we ask for a dinner and they forget us. So we had some rice to cook but they didnt want us to use the rice cooker???!!! and the lady told us that we can buy some rice from them, i answer Yes (cuz we were hungry), she left in their house and never came back???!!! So we didnt had dinner.... -there is no cooking facilities, even a boiler to get hot water for clients,or a microwave but you can pay around 500yen for a tea or a coffee???!!! -there is a poor choice on the food menu - the room was really small compare to the photos, you can t open your luggage... -the dryer for clothes doesnt dry -the only one toilet or shared bathroom downstairs.... Conclusion : this place could be wonderfull, but we felt like ghosts. I think the owners have to close the place when they don t want to receive and take care about people.... otherwise the lake which is about 35min walking is beautiful, and the mountain surrounding also.... Dont go there if you are alone, or if you dont have a car.... the price is too high for what you get....

Review 29:the architecture the free drop from,to train station The internet connexion (hopefully)

Review 30:The poor choices of menu we had in the guesthouse, especially when my boy friend doesn't like seafood and make even narrow choices of the food.

Review 31:The famous Lake Kussharo is just in front of the guesthouse that we both like

Review 32:Restroom not heated, rental gear expensive.

Review 33:Comfortable accommodation, great value dinner, snow shoe / ski rental, excellent location for travelers with private vehicle.

Review 34:Nothing.

Review 35:We had a wonderful time here, and loved the guesthouse and the location. The family were incredibly welcoming and accommodating. We are both vegetarian, and were treated to very delicious meals. The meals themselves were a reason to visit this guesthouse. We were snowed in, and what better place to be stuck. The family was very helpful with rearranging our itinary and provided advice about the weather and the road conditiions. They even dug out our car and moved mountains of snow to help us get back on the road. We would highly recommend this guesthouse to anyone looking to experience a great part of Japan.

Review 36:The location is not so good.

Review 37:The free pickup and drop off offered by the guest house came in handy considering the fact that it is located quite far from the train and bus stations. The staff was also very friendly and helped us a bit with the bus schedules. The food prepared by the owner was excellent and very reasonably priced. Definitely try it if you stay there.

Review 38:If you do not have a vehicle to get to this guesthouse, you might have difficulty reaching here even though it was said that they provide pick-up service if it is requested in advance. Considering the breakfast included, I think it was kind of expensive for backpackers. It was probably due to peak season in this area where beautiful lakes are located nearby.

Review 39:It was very close to Kussharo lake and Mashu lake. It took about 10 minutes to get to Kussharo lake by car. It was built in the middle of the field where we could enjoy the entire nature. The wifi was good. We only had breakfast, which was usual Japanese meal. We could hear the raindrops knocking the roof.

Review 40:Should have individual bathroom for each room.

Review 41:The food provided is awesome!

Review 42:Excellent food

Review 43:Is quite far from town and is not convenient if without the own car

Review 44:Bed is comfortable

Review 45:A little noisy at night

Review 46:Antipathetic staff. Bad service. Dirty and dusty. No shared kitchen.

Review 47:Nice building

Review 48:dinner can be an improvement area

Review 49:Overall atmosphere is very good with home-like feel

Review 50:Very nice structure in a good location, surrounded by forests (and bears???)

Review 51:Not easy to be reached without car

Review 52:Nice location and good food

Review 53:Could be noisy because of the specific infrastructure of the guesthouse

Review 54:Good location, Food and the staff kindness

Review 55:Good dinner.

Review 56:My phone could't catch the WIFI signal

Review 57:Delicious breakfast and nice staff

Review 58:Room was warm. Not enough fans.

Review 59:Clean bathroom. Clean toilet. Good wifi. Cozy dining area.

Review 60:Comfort of the guest hse

Review 61:The dinner and breakfast; the friendly company of travellers; the comfy bed; the clean facilities.

Review 62:Smoking was allowed in the public library area.

Review 63:Room was nice Design of the house was beautiful

Review 64:Shared bathrooms and they were not very clean

Review 65:The common living area.

Review 66:Warm hospitality, great original delicious meals, amazing environment with wild onsen, beautiful building, for people who are a bit adventurous.

Review 67:Calming atmosphere and delicious food

Review 68:Beautiful scenery. Great dinner and breakfast!

Review 69:Given the remoteness of the location, it would be pleasant if the bicycles could be used at no charge instead of for 1500 yen a day. I was uncomfortable with the single toilet downstairs for all men in the hostel, which could only be reached by passing through the reception area.

Review 70:The only reason I stayed in this remote hostel was because public transport is not available to this area (at least in June) and staff offered a free pick-up.

Review 71:Very friendly and helpful staff. Went out of their way to provide us with dinner when we hadn't ordered it and were very useful in giving us bikes and instructions to cycle the area. Excellent food!

Review 72:The location is a bit of a pain if you're without a car. You can book a lift with advance warning though.

Review 73:The food was outstanding, delicious and well and truly great value. The staff were were super helpful, and the introduction to the area I received when I checked it was the best I've ever had.

Review 74:Probably the best stay I had during my whole 2 months Japan trip. Nice room with really comfy bed. Superb japanese style food (breakfast and dinner). Wonderful location (in the middle of nowhere, but still close to all the major sightseeing points). You can rent a bike directly from the guesthouse and get to Kussharo lake and nice rotemburos (natural onsens) in less than 10 minutes. Super convenient pick-up and drop-off service from/to JR Mashu station. Really cool and helpful English speaking staff. They can give you a whole lot of information about the area. Fast and reliable WiFi.

Review 75:when i booked this youth hostel, I'd expected that i could get useful information for travel. However i feel this hostel is just for Japanese. Nobody can speak english fluently.

Review 76:good location.

Review 77:Fantastic dinner and breakfast meals for a very reasonable price. Location is out of town but staff will pickup and drop off on request. No shops nearby so I recommend to pay for the meals. They are top restaurant quality in taste and presentation. Dawn sunrise tour also offered for 500 yen. Very worthwhile.

Review 78:Breakfast seems expensive no top up

Review 79:Overall satisfy.

Review 80:A bit off the road need transportation from the station.

Review 81:Friendly staff. Bike rental available.
