Reviews for Heritance Kandalama
Review 1:The hotel is large - not at all boutique. The concrete floors and walls mean that sound carries and our room was opposite a laundry room, which meant we were woken up early by excessive noise from staff and trolleys. When we asked them to keep the noise down, the silence lasted no more than a minute after which the loud chatter re-started. For the high price and 5 star rating, the hotel lacked some basics - eg no cotton buds or bathrobes, just one worn out towel per person etc.
Review 2:The hotel design is celebrated and famous for a reason - it is beautiful and practical and still modern after more than 20 years. The rooms are comfortable and the food delicious, plentiful and varied - the buffet offers plenty of choice and high quality food (the croissants tasted as they do in France). Located on a beautiful lake with great swimming pools. Very nice but expensive massages.
Review 3:With roadworks and congestion, it took 6 hours to travel to and from Colombo- not the hotel's fault but it's a factor when you consider the overall cost in time and money. Makes a short trip with kids not really worthwhile. We stayed 3 nights so it was OK. Would appreciate a playground for small kids- the Eco park is interesting but had 2 swings above large tree roots. A small play area in the main hotel would be a useful addition. Our kids are 2 and 4 and we ended up watching movies in our room because (other than the pool) there wasn't a small destination for them as such.
Review 4:Food is superb. Architecture and scenery is a real joy. Service is excellent.
Review 5:Besides the view, there inst much to do at the hotel. Only good for one night, just to experience a BAWA designed hotel. Over priced rooms - paid 600 AUD per night
Review 6:Buffet View
Review 7:Overall compared to other places in Sri Lanka price value is not good, especially with the horrendous tax added to the room price. While the building is lovely the feeling is not as premium as in similarly priced hotels. The room was full of insects, which is understandable in such a location but even in open lodges we didnt meet that many bugs as behind the curtains, it felt like that part hadnt been cleaned for days. The decoration of the long corridors and the public rooms and restaurants dont match the quality of bawas architecture, they feel a little bland and underfurnished, some plants or decoration would make it more appealing. During dinner in the a la carte restaurant there was a single piece of piano music that kept being repeated endlessly, getting on everyones nerves after maximum 3 times. Hard to understand something as easily avoidable as that in a top priced hotel.
Review 8:Bawas overall design stands out and is spectacular, the room and especially bathroom are equally beautiful. The location overlooking the lake from almost every room in the hotel is breathtaking. The a la carte dinner was very good, the breakfast buffet big and meeting exoectations for such a hotel.
Review 9:Jacuzzi was not working . Insufficient toilet items - no toothbrushes , no shaving kit . Corridors were too dark especially for senior residents .
Review 10:Hotel extraordinaire - wrapped by jungle , rock and cloud! Amazing architecture and a pool without limits - infinity ! Good selection for breakfast . Courteous and helpful staff .Access road needs maintenance and repair !
Review 11:Some staff was talking a lot when I read a book in library. And nothing ask me to get some food or drink and give me menu when I sat down in lobby.
Review 12:Beautiful nature I could see monkeys, elephant, squirrel:)
Review 13:Check in clerk felt he was doing us a favour, when we were doing him one by waiting for our room to be prepared on check in. Then he showed a distinct the lack of grace when we couldn't open our room door lock.
Review 14:Nowhere like this anywhere else in the world. The cooling breeze blowing through the natural stone corridor leading form the arrivals desk to the foyer is a delight.
Review 15:Could have been cleaner, the last 2 days we booked a panoramic room of course smaller than the de luxe however I did no expect to get lower services. the hotel is still a 5 stars !! Despite having received confirmation of the 4 nights booking , when I arrived at the hotel I have learned that only 3 nights were confirmed , one night , the second was not confirmed and we should look for another hotel!! We kindly got confirmation and we could stay got the 4 nights as booked . At my departure I did not get the invoice , I have requested it and still did not get it .
Review 16:The position , the food , the facility the staff
Review 17:I wanted to pay in cash an arrival,I was told that my credit card was already charged.I didn't expect this ,all payment in other prebooked hotels I have been making on departure day ! That really annoyed me
Review 18:I loved everything about the hotel, amazing location and amazing facilities.Big room and a great view.
Review 19:it s just perfect !
Review 20:This hotel is my old time favourite! Everything about it is amazing! The rooms are fantastic but the toilets need a little renovation. The staff is very useful and friendly. But that is everywhere in Sri Lanka! The view is incredible! The food is delicious with all types of varieties. The spa is fantastic with the view on the lac and forest. Don't think twice and book it!
Review 21:Property is a quite gloomy on rainy days, given its natural forest setting & built right into the cliff face--a few more lights in the corridors and public areas wouldn't go astray. The air-con in the room was freezing and on a high fan speed, neither of which could be properly adjusted--surely an easy cost saving if more attention was paid to this sort of thing.
Review 22:Location in the heart of a forest, with lots of wildlife, especially monkeys, in the surrounding grounds. Excellent quality food in the a la carte restaurant and great breakfast, which is just as well, given the isolation of the property. Room was huge with large bathroom, which had floor to ceiling glass window overlooking the forest garden. Very pleasant and helpful staff.
Review 23:Indian taste food is not available in hotel and we suffer a lot to get indian taste and varity . Hotel only care about european food
Review 24:Ambeience is very nice we love it
Review 25:The room is a bit too dark. To get to the hotel, you definitely need a car
Review 26:The hotel is in the forest. Very quite and discreet. The food and service are also super good
Review 27:- six senses spa is nothing like other countries well below its usual standard - lack of food options. Buffet is like mass production churned out
Review 28:Good location for travel to sigiriya
Review 29:Food in the "fine dining" restaurant could be improved, its rather avarage.slow check in.
Review 30:Unique experience, monkeys on the terrace, amazing view, comfortable rooms, big bathroom, couple jacuzzi.
Review 31:The best hotel we stayed in while in Sri Lanka. Leed certified, integrated with overall surroundings. Perfect for relaxing as well a great base for exploring Dambulla and Sigiriya. High floor provided perfect view over the lake as well as beautiful thunderstorms(since lower floors are either under or within tree line covering the view); A dozen of monkeys live outdoors, so balconies become unusable most of the time. Food is great, they serve pork sausages and bacon, however, price is a bit steep in comparison with the rest of the country restaurants of similar quality. Spa is on expensive side as well.
Review 32:The staff was extremely nice, the rooms were beautiful - we had our own jacuzzi in our bathroom. The breakfast was delicious! It has great position for travelling to Sigiria rock and the jungle all around was amazing as well as the monkeys on our terrace.
Review 33:Not enough signage to the Hotel. Very frustrating.
Review 34:Hotel surroundings were unbelievably beautiful. Food was epic and delightful with massive variety.
Review 35:It took a little long time to check out.
Review 36:The food, the view of the hotel. The hotel did not destroy the forest, there are animals around. If you see them, don't disturb them.
Review 37:Disappointed by the reception staff when greeted on arrival they were not very welcoming or friendly but on our departure quick to start hovering around for tips & see us to our car when for our two day stay there was barely a hello or acknowledgement.
Review 38:The location & views were amazing.
Review 39:Just to say something: the costs of the services there (taxi and food, since you don't have much around, the hotel tends to price them a but too much), but it didn't spoil any of the experience, which again was marvelous
Review 40:Amazing. Everything about the hotel is great. Its location, right between the touristic spots of Sigiriya and Dambulla, fabulously located in the middle of a forest with loads of monkeys, iguanas, birds, etc. The hotel mingles in the jungle, unnoticed from the outside. It has great facilities (3 pools overlooking the lake and forest around), monkeys are showing up on your private terrace, the rooms (we were kindly upgraded BTW) are modern and luxurious, with huge windows and stunning view. We originally didn't plan to, but we may go back as we had such an amazing experience there.
Review 41:It is pricey but you get your money's worth!
Review 42:Very friendly helpful staff lovely food. Great concept of being as Eco as possible being built into the hills. Lovely views. Large selection of options for meals.
Review 43:A bit isolated hotel charged extra for taxis not what we had planned for needed more resterants
Review 44:Monkeys being in the jungle and jungle walk meeting our friend in the old village, attentive staff good food
Review 45:Beautiful property in a quiet and lush environment. The rooms were equally comfortable and beautifully furnished. The buffet breakfast had a wonderful spread and staff were all very kind.
Review 46:I found the bathrooms to be a bit under the expected level of cleanliness you would expect for a hotel of that level. Also, the buffet food was very, very bad.
Review 47:Staff are very friendly and helpful, beautiful rooms, gym and other facilities open later than usual hotels. Table tennis and chess tables available all day and night.
Review 48:The hotel stuff needs to be groomed. A hotel of such rating can't be run by amature stuff. The cash section is very inefficient. Considering this hotel houses numerous foreign people...the stuff needs to be more vocal in English.
Review 49:For us..it was an architectural bliss.
Review 50:Only thing I didn't like was the darkness of the room. You need to secure a room above level 2 for better view of the lake instead of jungle viewz-
Review 51:Fabulous design, location, food, staff. The hotel offers all best amenities. Watching monkeys swing through the treetops whilst enjoying terrific breakfast
Review 52:Nothing really.
Review 53:Very friendly staff - Dilan has a very nice manner, and is very helpful. He even gave us some chutney upon our departure, which was very generous! The food was fantastic, and so were the facilities. Excellent views from the hotel room too! A unique and wonderful experience. It is very evident to us that the staff take pride in their job, and have worked hard to maintain the high standards. Strongly recommend Heritance Kandalama.
Review 54:Nothing.
Review 55:Probably one of the best services that we received on our visit to Sri Lanka. As has been the case with other Heritance hotels, the food was amazing. Definitely worth staying for 3-4 days
Review 56:The total ambiance of the property & staff were excellent. After climbing Lion Rock in morning spending a relaxing afternoon by the pool and walking the property made for a perfect day.
Review 57:The architecture takes a bit of getting used to. Reminiscent of Jurrasic World. Some staff were a little brusque. Food was very expensive by Sti Lankan standards.
Review 58:Stunning location, good position for many attractions. Fantastic pools.
Review 59:Excellent experience! Beautiful views and very nice staffs. It was so pity we only stayed here 1 night.. Wish we will have chance to stay a bit longer to relax.
Review 60:Checking in took 45 minutes, after a long journey it is long; apparently Booking did not transmit the info on time. But the hotel upgraded our room even though it was not their fault.
Review 61:It is a fantastic facility and well deserves the 5 star status. Friendly and efficient staff. Great location to visit the World heritage archaeological sites: Anuradapura, Polonnaruwa, Sigirya, and Dambulla. Fantastic view from Sigirya wing.
Review 62:The hotel is completely isolated so booking half board is a good idea as you must eat there.
Review 63:Beautiful hotel, courteous staff, wildlife - monkeys, bats, birds. Great a la carte restaurant. Generous and varied buffet. Wonderful infinity pool.
Review 64:would have liked to have an option of hand held shower as well and not only the over head shower. Also feel it needs some maintenance work and repainting in certain areas.
Review 65:Liked the view and the location.
Review 66:Rooms are looking a little worn and could to with modernising. They are also on the small side and our room didn't have a bath which was a shame as the view from the bathroom was incredible.
Review 67:Scenery, sunsets, food, staff, infinity pool
Review 68:They offer the worst room for booking.com customers. We asked to change it. They should offer more restaurant. They have one restaurant which is old fashion and depresive. Staff at the restaurants are not much paying attention to you. But reception people is great.
Review 69:Architecture is breathtaking. The hotel is hidden under the branches. It is next to a lake. That lake makes your whole trip worthwhile. I think this hotel is one of a kind. They have monkeys all arround. They have animal sunctuary where you can touch baby monkeys and check out rare white cobra.
Review 70:The design and layout in keeping with nature. The views were wonderful, so peaceful and serene. Usually we do not like big hotels but this place is an exception. Will definitely make our way back there in the near future
Review 71:The top pool is not clean enough.must pay attention to keep the water and surface clean.
Review 72:Best breakfast...Lunch....Dinner that we experience resentpast.
Review 73:We missed extra activities at the hotel, specially at night. Also the staff always tries to get a tip for whatever they do.
Review 74:Great hotel and location, close to Sigiriya and other attractions.
Review 75:Too many monkeys . Room rates are in$ but when check out the Room rates were converted from local currency to $. ( daily currency rare) . Also we were not aware about the high service charge rate.
Review 76:Friendly people , location , nature and Good variety
Review 77:We traveled with a 1 year old, so the drive from Colombo to Dambulla was tough as it takes about 5 hours. Glad we did though as the hotel and surrounding area is very beautiful. The hotel is very natural, so there are a lot of insects flying/moving about.
Review 78:I loved that this was a very natural holiday. The hotel has made an effort on conservation, and is very natural, good thing for children to see, and the pool overlooking the surrounding area is beautiful at sunset - and they have a flutist playing!
Review 79:This was probably the most beautiful place we have ever stayed. We had a room with panoramic view and it was worth the extra cost as it was stunning! The hotel itself is also beautifully designed to compliment the landscape.
Review 80:Can you imagine a hotel guidebook warning you of monkeies and squirrels?! Wonderful location and design. Truly Eco-friendly. The traditional Sri Lanka Currey Rice and Beans & Vegas in the restaurant on 7 F are MUST try!
Review 81:We really enjoyed our stay. It was our anniversary so we were surprised with an anniversary cake. The best part of the hotel was the location. It was simply amazing to stay on the rocks. We shared our days with monkeys and nights eith bats. Would defintely go again
Review 82:Imaging building by famous Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa build 20 years ago, but meets modern Eco concept of joining with nature. Fantastic views of Siguriya Rock and the lake even from the bathroom. Elephant ride along the lake. Friendly staff. Unique experience.
Review 83:Great variety of excellent quality food. Very good service throughout. Spa staff very professional. Pools nice. Amazing views and you really feel part of the surrounding nature. The monkeys were watching me swim! Very clean. Eco friendly. Driver accommodation available.
Review 84:We did not received panoramic room, we booked, but got a free upgrade to higher class room with jakuzzi, which we really liked!
Review 85:Well, everything: atmosphere, views, pool, polite staff.
Review 86:Logistically hotel is not very convenient to go sightseeing in Dambulla and Sigiriya
Review 87:Incredible view of the surrounding areas and the lake. Hotel truly blends in with nature
Review 88:The distance between my room and the infinity pool by the check-in area was very far.
Review 89:Love the design, service, mood of the place. I really enjoyed the walk in the lower leg area, just below the hotel.
Review 90:The corridors leading to the rooms are not particularly well lit at night, so younger children might find it scary.
Review 91:The food, location and swimming pools are brilliant! We also really appreciated the welcoming lotus flower. Also watch out for the bats!
Review 92:Overpriced for accomodations and service given. Isolated area, costs of transportation and activities very high in comparison to the rest of Sri Lanka. Limited things to do in the proximity, 3 days / 2 nights more than suffice! Dissapointing incident with final bill, make sure you check your invoice has been added up correctly.
Review 93:Absolutely beautiful hotel by Architect Geoffrey Bawa, grounds need maintainace but definately deserves a visit!
Review 94:The heritance is the perfect balance of the built environment within its natural surrounding. Geoffrey Bawa is an architectural genius, who till this day continues to inspire. My stay at the hotel, from arrival to check out has been fantastic. Staff were very helpful and food was Devine. The spa treatment is a must try. The neighbouring monkies were definitely amusing. Being so close to the elephant safari and God's gift of nature has made it an unforgettable experience.
Review 95:Nothing. Everything was just so perfect.
Review 96:This is by far the best hotel I've ever stayed in, and I've tried quite a lot of hotels!!! The architecture is fabulous, the framed views are out of this world, the fusion with nature is soothing, the location is remote and perfect for an escape from everyday busy life, and the room design, cleanliness, comfort and friendliness are by far plain excellent. The whole building feels like a suspended piece of art, hanging between mountains and valleys, overlooking gorgeous Kandalama lake. This is not 5 stars, this is 7 stars. You are greeted with a welcome drink and you wait by the wonderful pool as the front desk processes your check-in. Honestly, I would even live there.
Review 97:Woodwork inside the rooms needs some maintenance as the facility is about 20 yrs old. I encountered jammed wardrobe doors in my room. Wood work at the vanity top was dull.
Review 98:Excellent Staff. Very Nice food. Nice facilities, very good spa and gym. Excellent Views. Perfect Holiday destination. Highly Recommended.
Review 99:Amazing location!! Really enjoyed our stay in Kandalama, would def return in the future. We ordered bfast to the room, it arrived on time, all very fresh, great service overall, just be carful of the monkeys, they like to steel food from your balcony of you leave any. Thanks
Review 100:Staff promoting the elephant rides. Elephant are not animals that should be held in captivity and elephant rides should not be encouraged as a part of responsible tourism
Review 101:Very friendly staff - excellent choices on breakfast and dinner buffet. Appreciate how the hotel has not destroyed the environment by not building a tar road in place of the current gravel road
Review 102:Ambience of the restaurant was not great indoors (loud children, bright lighting, no music and bad acoustics) but outdoors was wonderful. Staff were lovely but a tad overbearing.
Review 103:Everything else was perfect from the gorgeous rooms with a view of Sigiriya and the water tank, the monkeys having breakfast with you on your balcony, the three swimming pools and the hotel itself, carved into the rock and very much in harmony with nature. Food and service was excellent.
Review 104:Monkeys
Review 105:Staff was really good. Hoping to be there again. Food was awesome. I really like the wash room interior. And shower is really cool. Overall superb hotel.
Review 106:That guys couldn't have short at the dinner buffet. It was OK for girls but not for guys. That ended up with men walking around in jogging pants instead of a nice pair of shorts.
Review 107:The rooms was lovely! The nature & the environment was breathtaking! The pool area and the gym was nice. Friendly staff. We got a really good and needed welcoming when we arrived super tired at night. Awsome breakfast and dinner buffets!
Review 108:Leaving!!!!!
Review 109:Wow!!!! This place is honestly amazing. I felt as though I was arrivingat Jurassic park or something. The place is built into the jungle andhas a real wow factor!!!! The staff were amazing! The food is amazing! And the monkeys are amazing!! Truly one of the better places I'vestayed and will Definitely be staying here everytime I travel to SriLanka! Thanks for an awesome experience kandalama!!!!!!!
Review 110:The fantastic, welcoming and cheerful staff made this stay a perfect luxury get-away. The beautiful surroundings and the vast array of wildlife made our stay exciting and full of adventure.
Review 111:We were upgraded to a corner suite for our three night stay, which was off season. We had a splendid view over the lake, with mountains around it. We had a balcony, which we didn't use because opening the door attracted a troupe of badass monkeys who were determined to get into our room. We didn't mind because they were so amusing to watch running up and down the ledge outside our windows. We took the half board option, and greatly enjoyed the breakfast and dinner buffet. The free wifi was great and we liked getting the ABC from Australia on the TV. It's hard to imagine a better place to stay.
Review 112:Huge groups checking in in the lobby undermines the calm that the hotel seeks to create in the communal areas. Poolside on 5th floor (infinite pool) could have used a little more grass to keep shoes from tracking lots of dirt around.
Review 113:Kandalama offered glorious views, set in the forested hillside overlooking Kanadalama lake. It felt very iconic and was certainly groundbreaking when it was built. It's still looking great. There were 3 lovely pools, and the property was teeming with wildlife - we saw birds, monkeys (on our balcony!), and a family of mongooses greeted us as we arrived.
Review 114:The food was very good, but wasn't too dissimilar to the food at cheaper hotels we stayed at on our trip. We weren't disappointed, but there is room for improvement to give the meals the outstanding quality that this hotel warrants. We didn't agree with the hotel's elephant, however I'm sure it is very well looked after (it seems content enough) I would rather see elephants in their natural habitat.
Review 115:Impressive architecture and design throughout the whole site. I haven't stayed at a hotel like this before - and would certainly return again. Everywhere you look there is an amazing view. Every staff member we came across was excellent and genuinely welcoming. The building has improved with age, contrary to reviews describing it as 'tired'. I know it's a small detail but the shower in the room was incredible, looking out over the trees and across the lake through the glass wall - pretty special! The lady who welcomed us on arrival and showed us to our room was outstanding. I look forward to visiting again.
Review 116:when we checked out, they over charged us for something from mini bar we didnt eat. It's been heard happened a few times before. that's not cool.
Review 117:the view and location
Review 118:Nothing
Review 119:Absolutely everything, the ambience, the scenery the wild life, the infinity pool and the fantastic the best hotel experience in years and I stay 60+ nights away per year
Review 120:Couldn't find wifi network in bedroom -as we only stayed 1 night we didn't bother with it. Location is remote, which is good if you want to be away from the town, but you will need a driver to take you down.
Review 121:They have 3 swimming pools! Buffet breakfast and dinner are good. Good bar, attentive service. You can see beautiful sunset from the reception, and monkeys visit your room balcony which is really cute. Massage is also amazing - though only tried 15 mins foot. Highly recommend to try their milk toffee... I bought 2 boxes and wish I bought more!
Review 122:If you're afraid of animals such as bats or insects, be cautious. The rooms are perfectly cleaned but the hotel is completely open.
Review 123:The staff is very charming and welcoming. The room and more precisely the bathroom is very romantic. Then the landscape from the pool is amazing. I recommend to enjoy it during the sunset.
Review 124:Only stayed for one night after visiting Sigiriya. We were soon ugraded to luxury suite, which was really nice! Happy about both the dinner buffé and the breakfast. How cool isn't it to wake up to a Family of monkeys on your Porch? Highly recommended
Review 125:Wifi keeps disconnecting.. But since I was in a holiday it worked for me.. But for official conferences it might be a problem :-(
Review 126:Everything.. Great welcome straight at the pool side with a welcome drink of your choice, excellent location, nice staff, lovely rooms, a nice mountain/jungle trek to the kandalama rock. Excellent bathrooms, almost open to the jungle, showering here feels great :-) Go for the 5th floor or higher for a better view. It rained the days we stayed here and it was wonderful :-)
Review 127:The management ist poor. Our booking by booking.com was not registrated in Kandelama Heritance. Afterwards the give us for 353$ a "Panoramic Room" without any Panorama. Discussions about a price-reduction ended in a "Sorry". This ist not correct for a *****-Hotel, that ist cheated!
Review 128:The environment, the building, all facilities, the pools, the buffet in the morning and the evening
Review 129:you need to have transport to go out
Review 130:Wonderful hotel with stunning scenery around, middle of the jungle and near by lake; monkeys claiming through the balcony and steeling bananas ; definitely stay here again
Review 131:Food: Except for breakfast, the food at the 3 restaurants is just average. It is not possible to have dinner outside, which was incredible for us, and their best restaurant has no view over the lake, although this is the main feature of the hotel. Service: There were people listening to their own loud music on the bar terrace, like in a backpackers hostel, and the staff didn't want to talk to them so that they would stop it. So we had to go back to our room to have an after dinner drink! We booked 2 months in advance and requested an upper floor room: they put us on the ground floor. Housekeeping: The windows glasses of our room were literally full of birds excrements. The housekeeping in general should be improved if they pretend to be a 5 star hotel (and want customers to pay this price). Bar: There is no proper bar, it's more a hall with chairs in front of the elevator.
Review 132:The architecture of the building is impressive and very nice
Review 133:No lake view from the Deluxe rooms (lower floor). A bit noisy in the hallway with personal chatting and trolleys passing by. The mattress of our bed was not very good so I had a back pain during all our stay... The gym room was a bit disappointing, no view and no place to practice yoga... SPA was ok but a bit disappointing for a SIX SENSES. WIFI system need to be improved.
Review 134:We loved the stunning view from the restaurant, the terrace, garden... The staff was friendly. Check-in and check out were fast.
