Reviews for The Clarendon Hotel

Review 1:I think I may have discovered the phenomena of having breath too fresh

Review 2:Free mints at the counter. Free mints on the pillow. What more could you ask for

Review 3:It was during Christmas holidays, and the hotel was under minimum staff number. The reception was closed most of the time, so the only staff we saw was for the checkout

Review 4:The location, the room

Review 5:The location of the hotel was great; within walking distance to numerous bars and restaurants. The room was also clean and had lovely decor. Moreover, despite having limited operation hours over the Christmas period, instructions on self check in were clear and straightforward to follow.

Review 6:We stayed Christmas night, so the check-in was organised in advance. Clear instructions and the parking is close and secure. The room was spotless and comfortable. I like the art deco styling.

Review 7:When we had to change rooms we were downsized significantly! Disappointing but still very clean. Convenient to good areas but not on a very appealing street.

Review 8:Nice decor and clean room! Had to change rooms as our toilet didn't flush and were compensated with a bottle of sparkling wine and a genuine apology. Thank you!

Review 9:The carpark was inconvenient.

Review 10:The room was perfect for what we needed. The staff were very helpful and it was close to everything. Newcastle has a lot of great culture.

Review 11:Not much really. Just the wardrobes needed updating. Tiles in bathroom had black around edges probably mould. But overall very clean.

Review 12:Balcony Room had sitting room and little kitchenette ie microwave. Newish & up to date furnishings and carpet

Review 13:There was nothing to this dislike.

Review 14:The location was great the staff were friendly and helpful and the room was adequate however we found the bed to be a bit firmer than we are used to. Overall we enjoyed our stay and would book to stay there again if we visited Newcastle second time.

Review 15:Very noisy due to a combination of major building work going on next door in the day and other noise within hotel room all night made sleep impossible.

Review 16:Excellent location, close to my conference. The outer appearance of drabness was negated by the excellent quality of the room. I would stay there again as it offers value for money.

Review 17:Explaination of the carpark location. The key pad to get in after hours, it was very hard to read numbers.

Review 18:The description of the room on line was not what it was like in reality. Sleeps 4 adults fold out sofa, no.

Review 19:The girl at reception was fantastic, she was very helpful with everything I needed. I believe her name to be jodie, I could be wrong as I got it from an email. The room was very comfortable, I would stay again if the need comes up.

Review 20:Even though it was out of the hotel's hands, the building work on the next door Newcastle Court House was a disruption for getting great sleep as the workmen began to cut concrete outside our room very early in the morning.... it was a weekday so we took advantage of the sleep kits provided by the hotel the next night.

Review 21:We were in Newcastle for a wedding which was being held at the Museum, a very short walk from the hotel. I also prefer to stay in older boutique hotels like the Clarendon as they have such character and can be a little quirky.

Review 22:There was quite a bit of noise from downstairs (poolroom?) and when the bottles were emptied into the bin but after that it was fine (Friday night)

Review 23:We booked 2 rooms. They were both very clean and well set out with tea and coffee making facilities, mini bar etc. the lift worked well.

Review 24:The Clarendon is in an excellent location, considering how much the Council has let Hunter St run down on the western end....it's close to the Honeysuckle and the beach....if only we knew to walk the other way!! The staff were awesome, sooo helpful! Overall had a good vibe! The rooms were spacious and clean, with great decor!!

Review 25:Initial park spot -wedged shaped abutting pillar ( reception happy/able to change to more accessible park bay).On first night -roadworks/jack hammering on Hunter St until ?? 2400

Review 26:Very central to our needs ( for performance at adjacent Civic Theatre) . Friendly reception staff. One of slower lifts on Earth - reminded me I was on holiday and in no rush - better than stairs for my oldish Dad, and possibly consistent with age and character of the Art Deco hotel

Review 27:Abit loud on the first night with the band playing until 11pm, which was ok except I had to be up at 5am the next day. The second night was a bit of a disaster. There was no hot water plus they were doing works outside very late at night. And there was no parking key (luckily the kind cleaner helped me out)

Review 28:The Bar and Restaurant are closed on Sundays and public holidays. No big issue the foreshore is two minutes walk away as is Darby Street.

Review 29:Two nights at a very good rate negotiated over the internet, meant we could park the car in secure facilities and walk the perimeter of attractions surrounding The Clarendon. The staff upgraded us to the quiet side and into a double which was amazing, spacious and private. 16 foot ceilings??? Everything is clearly sign posted and details revised so no misunderstandings are permitted.

Review 30:Really friendly staff who ensured we need how to get into the hotel out of hours. Location was fantastic for us as we were going to the civic centre which was right next door. Restaurants all within a short stroll from the hotel.

Review 31:Parking is next door in another building. Not really accommodating with luggage or walking difficulties. Couldn't get access to car park level sunday morning as bistro is closed, so you figure out for yourself that you need to walk out Hunter street and through the mall to access car.

Review 32:Bistro menu not huge but good selection, reasonable price and enjoyable. Room and beds were clean and comfortable.

Review 33:Noise from room above (playing loud music) but only for short time.

Review 34:So close to all facilities. Room comfortable and clean. Reception staff very pleasant and helpful.

Review 35:Nothing upset me, but some may find the hotel entertainment slightly noisy - however the staff said the can supply earplugs should you find them necessary!

Review 36:Central location - great things to see, do, and eat within strolling distance.

Review 37:- Above a pub, had to walk through to get in from car parking - Not a warm welcome - Needs a general update

Review 38:- The location was really handy for us - The staff member on checkout was friendly

Review 39:Reception was closed when we arrived. You had to queue at the bar to get someones attention. You can only enter the car park after your check in- just inconvenient as it was difficult to find parking outside or around the hotel

Review 40:Ideal for a short stay in newcastle. Hotel is central and rooms are large and clean. Bathroom was so white and bright with not a speck of dirt seen.

Review 41:Live music and noise in beer garden Friday and Satuday nights was a problem as this was a business trip. Limited room service a slight inconvenvience, but there are options close by for meals.

Review 42:Reception staff were very good and the room was a good size. Location is very good - I was attending a conference that was being held across 3 venues: City Hall, University House and Crowne Plaza. This hotel was very well located for these venues as well as for a good range of restaurants and easy access to Darby St cafes.

Review 43:Somewhat dim lighting in the room - consider a centrally placed ceiling light or a standing lamp in a corner of the room.

Review 44:Convenience to centre of town, nearby river waterfront, plenty of hip restaurants and bars.

Review 45:The view was nothing to write home about, as it was staring straight at what could only be described as a construction site!! We only stayed the 1 horrible night which set us back a hemorrhaging $185.. Well $175, addtional $10 was charged for secure parking. Though it was secure! It was located beneath the council building behind the Clarendon Hotel. Now to wrap this terrible review up... As we left the elevater we quickly entered the dank hallways of the first floor" we walk on towards our room positive (as we just forked out $185) yet dubious (as reception was as stail as a dead fish! We entered the room to strong scent of urine! The bathroom was located immediately on the left as we entered, which is where the unflushed toilet was discovered along with the damp used hand towel. They had the decency to wash there hands yet can't flush they're filth away.

Review 46:Nothing!

Review 47:Absolutely nothing.

Review 48:Everything, staff excellent, food amazing, location terrific, security wonderful, parking easy, bar staff very accomodating and friendly, room awesome.

Review 49:Slightly noisy at night from associated in-house music however bearable. The double glazed window frame contained broken glass and building offcuts but these were only visible and not able to be accessed.

Review 50:The queen suite (104) is roomy with a very comfortable bed. The room service and cleaning was exceptional.

Review 51:Through no fault of the hotel the train doesn't go all the way into the city now so the station just across from the hotel has been closed which makes it more difficult to catch the train to Sydney.

Review 52:The staff were very pleasant and helpful. Good sized room and clean

Review 53:Noisy construction next door commencing 6.45am on a Saturday - obviously they know about this. Add to this the noisy beer garden below the room until midnight and it does not allow a decent sleep. No luggage storage available on Sundays, so had to drag it around with us all day. Supposed to be a 4 star establishment which I cannot fathom.

Review 54:Good shower head, good location, free WiFi.

Review 55:Have to walk between bar and pokies to get to so called boutique accomodation. Parking is off site so you have to drag luggage a good 500 metres to the hotel. Sorry I don't recommend.

Review 56:Staff were lovely an our two rooms lovely and clean. Ours had only one chair and no couch and bad lighting in living area. Had to keep air con on all night as hunter street too noisy. Lift slow. Spacious room but tiny bathroom. Great location and very good restaurant.

Review 57:Bed was not too comfortable. Decor a bit dated.

Review 58:Good value for money. In the city centre. Great staff, very helpful. Nice food at the in house restaurant. Available parking (booking needed). Free wifi

Review 59:We were originally booked in a Queen Room without a window, I wish we had stayed with this room as the day before we were 'upgraded' to a Suite with a Balcony - which was actually the room at the far end of the hotel with construction scaffolding less than 20cm from our balcony. This wouldn't have bothered us so much if they didn't start drilling at 6.30am on the Friday morning. Again, we were accepting of this until Saturday morning when drilling started again at 6.30am.. Right outside our window to the point the walls behind the bed were vibrating. When we mentioned this at reception, the receptionist was lovely and apologetic, but made no attempt to compensate us. At $380 for two nights, I would suggest either booking the Queen Room that has no balcony so that you are on the front side of the hotel, or booking elsewhere until constructions are finished. I wouldn't stay here again.

Review 60:Rooms are lovely, clean and big, the bed is comfy and the actual hotel is in a great spot for walking to just about everything.

Review 61:View from the window/balcony - construction scaffolding!

Review 62:The adventure checking in on a public holiday! It felt like we were the only people staying. Great location for the Wharf restaurants and bars. Comfortable room in terms of size, temperature and noise level.

Review 63:We didnt have our towels replaced but taken so after our showers we had nothing to dry off with at all. very dissapointing.

Review 64:Location was the best part and the one staff member was so nice and accomidating.

Review 65:the sofa is really uncomfortable. There was a really bad smell in the lift but as soon as we made the staff aware they were onto it.

Review 66:location is great. Right near Darby street. Nice rooms for the price and the staff were really nice.

Review 67:There were very few staff working the days we were there due to the week we staid. However the house keeper was very helpful bringing us plenty of extra towels, toiletries and blankets. The rooms were well decorated and the location was fantastic.

Review 68:After almost 10yrs in hospitality I had the most pleasurable check in/out from the most beautiful and charismatic receptionist I have ever encountered. After meeting her my stay was great and the day just seemed to get off on the right foot! Whilst the facilities were good, it was the actions of one person being completely genuine that set this stay above others! Thank you!!!!

Review 69:The bathroom was huge but the floor got really wet after each use, better drainage needed. Can't wait until construction site gone next door!

Review 70:Loved the decor and the size of the suite- for the money paid it felt very spacious. Location was great- close to mall, Honeysuckle bars and restaurants and Darby St. Staff were helpful, Tony did our washing, drying and delivered laundry!

Review 71:The staff very friendly and helpful. Secure off street parking and very central to Newcastle theatre, harbour foreshore, Fort Scratchley and the museum.

Review 72:We booked a suite and were surprised by the disabled bathroom when we didn't need or ask for it. They didn't communicate we had this bathroom which was huge but very basic. The shower flooded the entire bathroom floor making it very slippery and dangerous. No where to place things when getting ready. We used all the hand towels to stop the water flooding out. The people in the room next door were noisy and we could hear their music. Thin walls.

Review 73:Location to cafes and wedding we were attending. Free parking was great.

Review 74:looks like clean but when you look out the windows can see weren't clean for a very long time.

Review 75:good locations and easy access to city attractions. good working air condition.

Review 76:Paid $10 extra per night for a balcony overlooking a building site. Balcony was cobwebbed, surfaces in room were dusty. 1st room had noisy air vent in corner and asked to swap - fortunately receptionist was available (no hotel staff were onsite most of the time: we were not staying on public holiday days). Car parking was offsite and rear hotel access was locked throughout stay.

Review 77:Good location next to Civic Station and Honeysuckle, walking distance to art gallery, Cooks Hill cafes and Newcastle East shops. Comfortable bed, high ceilinged airy room, decent shower.

Review 78:Surrounded by construction at the moment

Review 79:Ease of check--in and check-out; comfort and layout of double room for family. Friendly, efficient staff, clean apartment, and had everything we needed.

Review 80:the a/c unit was very noisy. metal chairs in balcony dirty. One of the doors to balcony grated against the frame. Noise (music, TV, speakers...)from bistro was quite audible in my room (away from the street). Gave a toaster on request with a warning of $1000+ fine in case burnt toast sets off the fire alarm! Daily newspaper (mentioned in guest amenities) not supplied.

Review 81:helpful people. superb location.

Review 82:noise from air conditioner motors sounded like truck at the window. Shower leaked under the tiles onto bathroom floor.lift a bit noisy. Would be great to be able to park at front of building to book in and then go to car park.

Review 83:location. Food. Jody was excellent at desk. Comfy bed.

Review 84:Reception is not occupied on Sunday afternoon and some TV channels had a bad reception but those were minor issues.

Review 85:Clean, modern rooms, great central location, friendly staff, brasserie has good dinner

Review 86:Difficult access to car park and a bit lonely at night. It was better than no car park though. Not allowed to pay deposit by cash when I didn't know pin for my MasterCard!

Review 87:Near to where I needed to be.

Review 88:A minor issue: could replace/fix wooden night-entry doors; a little hard to push open for more fragile people. Minor point: jaded, dated furniture in corridors outside lifts. (Who cares as long as rooms are nice?) Toilet has high pedestal to perch on, also have to reach backwards behind you at awkward angle to get toilet paper. (Have to twist body off seat almost to see toilet roll.

Review 89:As a solo traveller, good value for money and great alternative to more expensive options for conference accommodation. Central location with easy access to free buses/walking to major venues, river and shore-line and shopping precincts Very pleasant, spacious rooms with good natural lighting and good room service. good size bathroom and shower. All Staff courteous and pleasant to deal with. Also pleasant to each other.

Review 90:Close to Newcastle Wharf precinct. Location easy to find. Accommodation was modern and clean. Hotel Rooms with great ensuites - BONUS! Hotel meals were well presented and faultless. Security parking onsite - brilliant. You can't go wrong with booking at the Clarendon.

Review 91:- Having to go out for breakfast. - There is music entertainment that from the bar, but it wasn't so loud that I couldn't get a good night's sleep - does not look impressive from the outside bit good value for money.

Review 92:- The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. - Good standard I room. - very reasonable rate. - Contemorary decor. - Reasonably priced secure parking. - Central location and not far from the entertainment centre - it was a very comfortable stay - would stay again

Review 93:Modern, spacious & clean room. Staff very friendly. kitchen was cleaned down ready to close on my return from conference but chef kindly prepared me a delicious meal. breakfast was also excellent. Would stay again, handy location.

Review 94:Noise, hard to get in and out sometimes and old lift.

Review 95:Front room with balcony WS noisy. Got moved to a courtyard room and it was heaps better. Nice rooms. Pub down stairs and music late in a weekend. OK overall and staff were friendly.

Review 96:The large bed meant it was not easy moving around the room but it looks like renovations are being undertaken and am sure the issue would be resolved. It was a bit of a pain having to take our luggage through to a carpark which is not attached to the hotel.

Review 97:The location was excellent and the queen suite spacious. We arrived on a Sunday so after 1:00pm there was no staff which was not a problem for us.

Review 98:Only one chair provided in the room for two people. The light fitting in the passage of the room coming off the wall.

Review 99:The comfortable bed. Good facilities. Nice restaurant and lovely breakfast. Excellent position for Newcastle attractions.

Review 100:noisy band downstairs kept us awake. So loud the windows rattled

Review 101:Everything - location, size of rooms, cleanliness, staff friendliness, secure parking (make sure you book in advance for this), facilities

Review 102:No where to park while checking in and getting access keys for the offsite (but very near) secure parking.

Review 103:Very old façade (1939) and very small entry and reception desk but only 21 rooms. The rooms have been modernised (maybe 5 years ago) and are of a good size with the usual facilities. The lounge/kitchenette was a separate room from the bedroom. Despite being on the Hunter Street side and there being a wedding downstairs, the room was quiet enough.

Review 104:Car park locked upon the inside could not get back to room through lift. Had to exit door with luggage and drag around to front entrance of hotel then get in a lift. The view from balcony was a bit depressing and the restaurant and bar was closed on a sunday on a long weekend and on grand final day. What the !!!!

Review 105:Reasonable size rooms. Bathroom was huge. Beds comfortable

Review 106:there was nothing negative about our start the the clarendon

Review 107:i booked in at the clarendon for 1 night as it was in our budget. thinking it was "pub accommodation" i expected it to be satisfactory but when i entered the room i was suprised by how lovely it was. everything was finished to high quality. there was loads of space. location is excellent (a walk to darby street and honeysuckle). 100% clean and so so comfortable. the best thing was the service and help from the friendly staff. i forgot to read my email for the code etc to get into the hotel and called the staff who met me at the door and let me check in early. they were so helpful with (cheap as and secure) parking and with late checkouts etc. my boyfriend said these rooms were better than his 5 star sydney hotel experience the week earlier. i rate the clarendon 10/10 and would recommend my family friends and anyone to stay here

Review 108:In room 109 the hot water over the bathroom sink took at least 5mins. to be warm!!! This was frustrating. Management need to be more considerate towards their guests or to be a party venue in the courtyard, as the two at the same time do not mix. Noise is an issue.Other than that my weekly stay was very, very comfortable.

Review 109:All staff were lovely and nothing was a problem for them.Hotel was so central to all my needs.Without having a car I could walk to everything.Dining was excellent and very tasty with very prompt service. Not at all like pub food!!! I will stay again but I will make enquiries first as to if there are parties on,if so, I will go somewhere else. Because of the noise factor I really think the price for accommodation was a little steep.

Review 110:Hmm, no great drawbacks, but cleaner the windows would have been great - you can actually see the river.

Review 111:Great friendly staff, a lovely vibe, second time we've stayed here, even better than the first - gotta love that. Option of late checkin was much appreciated. Also, in one day, had the best hot chocolate EVER, the best breakfast stack EVER & best muffin EVER - just across the road!

Review 112:Great place, easy access to every thing. Gorgeous little cafés and restaurants, great Friday night atmosphere. Lots to see and do from pubs to bands. Walk on the beach, up to the lighthouse, even a kayak up the river. A bit of 4wd over at Stockton, weekend wasn't long enough.

Review 113:Sunday self check in Smelly & dirty room Wifi not working, even after checking code wasn't working Strange red pills in cupboard from other hotel guest

Review 114:Parking and luggage movement a bit cumbersome until used to it

Review 115:Friendly and efficient staff. Good bar and service. Breakfast in restaurant great value and good service.

Review 116:Enjoyed our stay. Most welcoming and appreciated upgrade offer to a very comfortable and spacious room. Easy walking distance to cafe's, shops, etc. We will definitely stay there again.

Review 117:Parking is a little walk from location.

Review 118:Staff great. Location great.

Review 119:Nothing

Review 120:Great rooms Delicious Food Friendly staff

Review 121:parking seperate building from hotel Got a balcony room but no view Bar staff was not very nice

Review 122:Great location. Friendly receptionist

Review 123:4 star hotel? This must be a joke. Motel is correct.

Review 124:The staff were super friendly.

Review 125:Restaurant was closed and no room service available No view from the balcony

Review 126:Location

Review 127:Elevator

Review 128:Great location. Loved the art-deco style in the rooms.

Review 129:Found it hard to find the carpark
