Reviews for Sakuraya
Review 1:Not many eating options in the evening. Most restaurants and shops close early
Review 2:Beautiful location within easy travelling distance to Hiroshima. Great cultural icons to visit, and a lot to learn about the history o the area and Japan in general. Bring your walking shoes as there are wonderful, but strenuous walks.
Review 3:Average hotel, didn't have the traditional ryokan feel, felt more like a budget hotel except the beds were replaced with futons lol. Would have rather spent the money on an actual hotel.
Review 4:Good location
Review 5:The staff were incredibly friendly, welcoming and helpful. They provided us with a map of restaurants and bars which was a nice touch. The foutons were surprisingly comfortable and the room was spacious. I will definitely stay next time.
Review 6:We were a bit surprised that there were no showers except the public baths.
Review 7:The room was very spacious. We were pleasantly surprised after previous stays in other places. Amazing location. Close to everything and so easy to find. We loved the public bath! The staff were really helpful and kept our things outside of check-in hours. Provided good advice and guides for dining in Miyajima. We loved Miyajima and even the two nights we stayed was not enough. The food was great, locals very helpful and the island was beautiful and clean.
Review 8:The little things made a huge difference here. The public bath in the basement was just the right temperature (like an onsen - not sure if it was natural hot spring water). Simple but thoughtful amenities like tea in the room, candies placed daily, and tooth brushes with a little capsule of toothpaste made everything better.
Review 9:Must stay! We loved the traditional room and authenticity of the place yet with a modern feel. The staff were friendly and gave us a map of all the restaurants in the area which was really handy!
Review 10:- Although it's specify, I don't know why people with tattoos aren't allowed in the hotel's public baths.
Review 11:- Sleeping in a ryokan surrounded by a beautiful environment! - Everything was superbly clean.
Review 12:My great recommendations keep filling the hotel and making it more difficult for me to get my own reservation.
Review 13:We come back here year after year. Great location, friendly and helpful staff.
Review 14:Our room was very comfortable. We had a room with a waterfront view and a seating area which was lovely-it made the room feel much larger. The bathroom small but worked well. The breakfast was simple but good and very convenient as the island got crowded even in the morning. Friendly staff. Let us store luggage after checkout.
Review 15:If you are not used to sleeping on thin futons on tatami mats be prepared for a pretty uncomfortable sleep. But was nice to have that ryokan experience nonetheless
Review 16:Location is great and view over the water was excellent.
Review 17:I prefer the option of private bathing facilities. Rooms does have private toilet which is nice though. But this is very common in Japan so not a criticism just an observation.
Review 18:Nice traditional style place close to Ferry. I liked that unlike most Ryokan, you do not take shoes off at front door but rather when you enter you room. I had a large room. Rooms in the front seemed to have great views and sitting area so would try that next time. The front desk guy gave me a list with map of restaurants that stayed open after 5pm. most were indeed closed but one was open and very good. Nice to stay on the island which is magical.
Review 19:If the hotel has a slope in stead of stairs for front gate, it would be better. It quite hard to carry heavy suitcases upstairs when we arrived.
Review 20:I booked 2 sea view rooms, one for my parents (both age above 65) and another one for my aunt and I, for one night. The rooms are nice. They have comfortable space, are clean and equipped with all needed facilities such as bathroom, refrigerator, TV, hair dryer, etc. The hotel has elevator (only for inside the hotel but not the front gate) which help in carrying suitcases upstairs. The staffs are very nice and very friendly with quite good English skills. I e-mailed them several times before arriving, asking about the rooms and other services, and they replied very quickly. They also helped my parents carrying suitcases down the stairs in front of the hotel when we checked out. The location is also great, only 5 minutes to ferry pier and Itsukushima shrine. I had great time during my stay and will stay here again if I have another chance to visit Miyajima.
Review 21:Perfect location for us - just a short walk from the ferry dock and close to a restaurant we like which is open in the evenings for dinner. We have stayed here twice before and keep returning.
Review 22:Facilities were bit old. Felt the place is overpriced (but this is probably the case everywhere on the island).
Review 23:Nice location, overlooking the ocean. Traditional Japanese style room with private shower.
Review 24:I love the location, only a few minutes walk from the pier. It is also very near the row of souvenir shops with easy access to Itsukushima Shrine and nearby attractions. I only stayed for one night but would love to stay longer :)
Review 25:On the downside we booked a Japanese style room and the futon were just a little hard. (But we are getting old!)
Review 26:Great location and good value for money. Staff was helpful and spoke enough English.
Review 27:Check-out time is a bit early at 10am but they will hold your luggage while you continue touring the island. I did not see complimentary water but there is a vending machine at the reception area.
Review 28:The seaview room is great. Great location within easy walking distance from the ferry terminal. The staff are very nice and helpful. They provided a list of available restaurants for dinner as most of the establishments close early. I would stay again.
Review 29:The location was excellent- in easy reach of everything, and the view from the sea view room was beautiful. The traditional room was comfortable, staff very helpful, and breakfast was nice.
Review 30:Nothing wrong with the hotel but beware, the island's shops close early, better make your shopping in advance or you'll have to take the ferry back to shore (30 to 45 mins for a round trip to the convinience store)
Review 31:Nice room with a view on the sea, friendly staff at the counter The hotel is 3 minutes from the pier and in the middle of Miyajima's village.
Review 32:Fantastic location with extremely friendly staff. The views, even from the mountain view rooms, were lovely (although I do wish I'd paid the little bit extra for the ocean view). I'd highly recommend anyone going to Miyajima to stay there.
Review 33:Only a few minutes from ferry terminal. Great central base for exploring the island. Can head out after crowds have gone in evening for night shots and dinner. We had sea view room, with enclosed patio looking out to the ocean. Great place to take a break. Breakfast available in lobby for 500 yen ... Toast, coffee, orange juice, hard boiled egg and salad. Staff very friendly.
Review 34:Not much... If hey could offer dinner option (like breakfast option - 500 yen), my rating would be 10 out of 10 !
Review 35:Great location. Friendly & helpful staff. Value for money. Grilled fresh oysters at the front of this property is to die for!!
Review 36:The pillows were filled with some kind husks, which gave me a tremendous headache in the middle of the night and wouldn't go away till mid afternoon.
Review 37:The hotel is very close to the ferry, which makes it very convenient to walk there with your luggage after you get off the ferry.
Review 38:Not really a problem, but be aware the lift only covers 4 of the 5 floors so you will have to take the stairs for the final bit. This is just an FYI.
Review 39:Japanese style bedroom, within walking distance from ferry port and torii gate. The guy at the reception was very friendly and suggested a very nice place to for dinner. The room was very clean and comfortable, a truly satisfying experience!
Review 40:Bathroom is small, but I have no complaints as its better than having to share public baths. There's also a weird smell in my room. It's not smelly but the air seems stale.
Review 41:Location, very near to the pier. Good view out from the window at level 3.
Review 42:This was a small, family run ryokan with very personal service. The room looked out over the gorgeous sea and had a little porch with two chairs and a table that we enjoyed very much.
Review 43:Some rooms don't have a private bath so be wary of that when booking. Also the rooms not on the sea side don't have a great view so be aware of that too.
Review 44:It was ver close to the station, the room was big and the view was beautiful (sea side room). The futons are quite comfortable and they also have yukatas if you want to try the japanese bath.
Review 45:Only one thing that bacon doors of the room was opened to the outdoor stairs. Could open the at night since was not feel safety to do it
Review 46:Location, staff, bath, room, yokata
Review 47:A few minutes walk from ferry terminal and the shrine. Staff cheerful and helpful, and spoke English. Breakfast was good, though had to be paid for extra, it was not expensive.
Review 48:In a great seafront position with amazing views. Arrived early and no problem to leave cases till rooms were ready. rooms were very clean and had toiletries. Breakfast was an extra but very reasonable and delicious. Staff so polite and helpful.
Review 49:Mountainview room was fine, but I wish we had booked a sea view room. Traditional Japanese style room was an experience, but a bit hard on the knees :).
Review 50:Fantastic location - short walk from the ferry, shopping and temples. Wonderful friendly helpful staff - they made us feel very welcome. Great value for 500Y breakfast.
Review 51:Hotel was great but be aware that Miyajima is pretty deserted after the day-trippers leave which means there are limited dining options!
Review 52:Very close to ferry terminal. Although we were early, we couldn't check in but they held our luggage and put it in the room when it became available. Very comfortable Japanese-style room.
Review 53:Fantastic experience in traditional Japanese hotel. Perfect location and nice view. Very spacious compared to other hotels in Japan. I took the see view which is more expensive but certainly worth it. Breakfast is cheap and nice. Exceptional memories!!!
Review 54:Excellent location on the waterfront! Staff is really warm, caring and helpful. The room we stayed in was large and well equipped. The whole facility was clean and had a common Japanese style bath in the basement. About a 5 minute walk from the ferry station. They also have an Oyster station outside the hotel where they sell grilled Oysters! The Itsukushima temple and Torii gate is also 5 mins walk
Review 55:Although I liked the look of the Japanese style, sleeping on a futon bed was not for me. Very hard. No light by the bed.
Review 56:Location is close to the ferry and easily found. Style is traditional Japanese, very nice. Sea view and sort of balcony. Wifi works well. Friendly staff and helpful with information.
Review 57:Well, not about the hotel, the hotel is great. But Miyajima after 6pm is a ghost town :) few places to eat and nothing else to do than relax (which is also nice)
Review 58:Close to the ferry, clean hotel with traditional rooms, slept very well in the futton. Close to everywhere as the island attractions are all together.
Review 59:The size of the toilet.
Review 60:Location. Found it in less than 4 mins from the ferry pier. Sea view is fantastic. We had a view of the free roaming deer from our room when we woke up in the morning. Fabulous.
Review 61:Air conditioner was not clean. It was also a very loud machine.
Review 62:Big, beautiful room. Great seaside view. Location just perfect, around 2 minute walk from ferry. Hotel staff was sometimes even too kind ;)
Review 63:Traditional bed we found to be very uncomfortable and the air conditioner wasn't working in our room so we opted to sleep with doors open but got attacked by mosquitoes so I wouldn't recommend sleeping with doors open.
Review 64:Location is wonderful with little balcony looking over ocean in front rooms
Review 65:The only negative was that the bathroom was very small!
Review 66:It was nice to be able to stay on the island, especially to be able to walk around without so many people on the island. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was a good size for two people.
Review 67:The room's bathroom was really small, the kind of bathroom you could find in a hostel when you book a room with private bathroom, but the price doubles the one in a hostel. We paid an extra for the sea view but at least, in the second floor, you can't see the shrine, so don't pay the extra if you want to see it from your room (ask the hotel first if it could be possible to see it in the upper floors)
Review 68:The location is very good, just 5 minutes walking from the ferry station, and in front of the sea.
Review 69:Small but well-equipped room which was not facing the sea but on the backyard, I could not see through the window nor open it so you'd better not be claustrophobic!
Review 70:The location (very central, in front of seaside), the cleanliness, the kindness of staff. Good value for money (I got a special single room deal, very interesting for this level of service).
Review 71:Perfect location, 100m from JR Ferry terminal and on the seaside walk. Right in the center, though in a quite position. Staff people are very kind and helpful. Nice Japanese style accomodation at reasonable price. Good breakfast. Great pubblic bath for guests.
Review 72:I could hear noise from the next room which could have become a problem if I was there for more than one night, but I may have just had noisy neighbours!
Review 73:A fantastic location, friendly staff and a lovely room. I was not expecting anything this good as it was very cheap!
Review 74:Couldn't fault the hotel but it is so hard to get anything to eat on tho island unless you like oysters. I would advise any tourist to bring some food from mainland especially for lunch, possibly bread etc to make sandwiches.
Review 75:The staff were very friendly and helpful, breakfast was great for only 500 yen. Was the only time I stayed in a traditional Japanese style hotel before and didn't know what to expect but the bed was so comfortable and the room was lovely with a little balcony overlooking the sea view.ropeway and aquarim both great days out and worth a visit.
Review 76:Ryokan-style accommodationon Miyajima, a stones throw away from the shrine and 'floating' Torii gate. 5 minute walk from the jetty. Very helpful and lovely staff
Review 77:Really friendly and helpful staff, AMAZING location right in front of the water and walking distance from the ferry. Comfortable rooms and very clean.
Review 78:Fantastic location on beautiful Miyajima island. A very large, clean Japanese room for a family of 5. Loved that the sink was separate from the toilet as it worked well for a larger group. Wished we could have stayed longer.
Review 79:For me personally it is not so comfortablte to sleep in futon bed. The were very kind and gave me s double futon. The rest only family got along with that very well and slept very well.
Review 80:The staff was very very nice, kind and helpfull. The location was very good. Close to the center, walking distance. Very close to the ferry. 5 minutes walk. They habe a little onsen. The place was very very pleasant. The wifi connection was excellent.
Review 81:Nothing, the day we spent here was probably the best day of our 21 day trip. Just being close to the water, relaxing and walking around felt great. The stay at the hotel was just perfect as well.
Review 82:The location is close to where the boats drop you off. The staff members are very friendly and knows a little bit of english.
Review 83:Unfortunately we had a noisy family in the room next door and with the thin walls was kept awake by them on both nights we stayed. No fault of the staff just unfortunate for us.
Review 84:Great location, loved the public bath. Staff lovely and helpful. Had cheap, basic breakfast one morning from accommodation which was good for the price and convenient as no breakfast options about. Miyajima was a Japan highlight for me, well worth the stay, make sure you do the climb to mt misen!!
Review 85:Very friendly and helpfull staff. Great location just 5 min walk from the ferry, and another 10 walk to Itsukushima Shrine. We had a room at 5th floor, very large and with a great view.
Review 86:Futons were comfy for some and not others, and it was quite expensive.
Review 87:Fabulous location, lovely traditional room, and very kind staff. It's not cheap, but spring for the ocean view! Looking out at that scenery is priceless.
Review 88:It was cute clean a great location friendly and helpful owners and staff, peaceful and relaxing at night close walk to view the Tori at night, plenty of room to relax looking over the water
Review 89:Nothing!
Review 90:Location was perfect. Just a 7-minute walk to the pier, and so easy to get around the island. The great view greets you first thing in the morning. The staff are so friendly and they go out of their way to assist you.
Review 91:Friendly staff, location is extremely close to ferry port, great Sento, close to loads of different restaurants, AMAZING VIEW! Get the Seaview room!
Review 92:The staff were very accommodating, we got driven to the station in the morning and had our luggage dropped off in the afternoon so if you're worried about the distance from the station you don't need to be. I thought we'd have a shared toilet but we had a private toilet and sink in our room. Adding the breakfast is worth it. We didn't add the dinner option but would recommend this if you are getting a late afternoon train into Takayama. I loved having tea in our room too.
Review 93:Loved everything about it!
Review 94:Sakuraya was fabulous - my favorite in Japan. Traditional tatami room with view of inland sea and Hiroshima. Pleasant, helpful staff. Beautiful Miyajima island - Could have stayed there forever :)
Review 95:The position was excellent as we had a sea view with patio where could relax.Staff were veryaccommodating with our luggage storage till we were ready to leave. Even gave our children a gift when we left.
Review 96:Wifi was slow and didn't allow me to do much on my mobile or laptop. The futon was tiny. There was a dangerous step in front of the bathroom.
Review 97:The hotel is conveniently located on a main street between the ferry port and Itsukushima Shrine. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was small, but had everything I needed for my stay: a bathroom with a bathtub, small fridge, TV and Japanese pajama.
Review 98:The bathroom was small but not out of the norm for budget hotels in Japan. There are very few dining options in the area as a whole after the tourists leave at 5pm so this is not a destination if you are looking for a crazy scene and late nights.
Review 99:Great location and view. We over looked the water and had a view of the coast and bay. The staff was very friendly and accommodative.
Review 100:The room with sea view is fantastic, try sipping tea or beer while watching the sea. Despite being on the tourist path, very quiet even in the morning. Excellent location.
Review 101:Only one staff member could speak English but when needed they got her especially for me and this one staff member spoke excellent English. The bed is a bit hard but I think that is to be expected of a futon on tatami. The lounge didn't really invite to relax there and socialise with others
Review 102:Beautiful room, great location (not even five minutes from ferry), awesome view, beautiful traditional Japanese room, great service, provided dinner map, staff was always trying to help and very friendly
Review 103:Rien
Review 105:We were traveling throughout Japan with other adult family members and staying in hotels. This was nice because we were able to get together after dinner and play cards. The typical hotel rooms are so small so it was not possible. We only stayed at Sakuraya for 1 night however if we stayed longer we would have cooked some meals there. The kitchen was well equipped and the food store was convenient.
Review 106:Excellent staff, very friendly and helpful. i have stayed two times in this hotel over the two times i visited miyajima. the third time i am going there i will surely stay there again.
Review 107:The toilet is a bit small Nearly everything close by 8 pm if you need food get in early
Review 108:Hotel next to ferry terminal and all attractions Staff speaks little English but try their very best to help Staff are very helpful Room is generous with great view
Review 109:- it is not 100% traditional Ryokan but more ryokan-like hotel, but for this price it is acceptable
Review 110:- staff is amazing! Extremely helpful, always with a smile and is creating lome-like atmosphere - quite good price as for Ryokan - very comfortable Japanease style beds - great localisation - close to the pier - room desing and fascilities - internet quality
Review 111:A traditional style room with all the modern facilities that you would need! TV, fridge. A really spacious room too. You will have to get used to the communal shower bathing area which reflects the traditional onsen style bathing. But I loved it. Very very friendly staff!
Review 112:We booked a room with water views and the outlook was stunning. The staff were very friendly and helpful! The staff gave us a map with locations of nearby attractions, restaurants, and supermarkets, as well as their opening and closing times.
Review 113:Futon bed was a little thin Try to get a room with sea view!
Review 114:Perfect location, cosy room, friendly staff. Very nice bath in the basement! Miyajima is beautiful en especially in the afternoon/ evening, because lots of tourists don't stay overnight!
Review 115:The hotel is next to the ferry port, about 5 mins to walk. We got a Japanese style room with sea view. Very comfortable! Staff are very friendly and helpful, they gave us lots of suggestion about local restaurant. We had a wonderful stay there.
Review 116:Beware that a lot of shops, restaurants are shutting down really early on Miyajima (obviously not "fault" of the hotel) so keep that in mind when you decide to stay on the island or in HIROSHIMA. Fortunately the hotel hands out a map with a list of restaurants open until late.
Review 117:Great Japanese style spacious rooms. Great location. Vending machines in the lobby. Highly recommended.
Review 118:Comparatively early check out (10am) - when check in is quite late at 3pm - hotel will store your bags for you around these times.
Review 119:We stayed in room 202 overlooking the sea - the room was very clean, and spacious and bright. Complimentary green tea and traditional Japanese sweets were a nice touch - convenient location being half way between the ferry station and the floating shrine.
Review 120:We had no complaints!
Review 121:We booked a sea-view room with a small balcony with the most stunning view over the harbour and the sea. The room was spotless og of good size, and the ryokan-style beds were very comfy. The staff is lovely and very friendly, and made us feel quite at home. All in all fantastic value for money!
