Reviews for Volkshotel

Review 1:Everything was okay. Such as we expect it after a look at the internet.

Review 2:Our room had a stunning view especially in the night. The breakfast was perfect.

Review 3:Breakfast quality was good, but missed some variety.

Review 4:A lot of humorous, small details that make you feel welcome. Decor. Connection to metro and tram.

Review 5:The scrambled eggs were surprisingly bad. I don't know how it's even possible to fail so bad when making scrambled eggs. Taste your own "juice"! Fire someone! Call the "egg-guy"! Do something about the scrambled eggs!

Review 6:Everything except the scrambled eggs!

Review 7:The staff weren't the friendliest we've met but not unfriendly either. It seems like a great place for creative business type people to meet, a real creative hub it seems, but as a young traveler, it isn't somewhere you can meet other young travelers to share experiences etc. At least not during our stay anyway.

Review 8:The bar was very cool, nicely decorated and comfy seats, good selection of beers bar food. The restaurant on the roof where you have breakfast is really nice too with a good selection of food and big windows where you can look out on the city. The rooms are quirky, with lots of light. Conveniently right next to a tube station which is 2/3 stops into the center, or if you have a bike it is about 10/15minute cycle and an easy route.

Review 9:The rooms are quite small but they do the job if you're away all day long like us.

Review 10:The decoration is really beautiful! It's like going to vitange store with a bunch of various trinkiet.

Review 11:I found the TV too small and not perfectly placed. The tv is opposite the bed on prox. 1.65m and the bed is when you lie down 0,80/1m high. So when you lie down the angle is so low that you cant watch the tv and its too small. It would be better if it was placed on the counter right en a bigger tv. Or make it possible to change the angle of the tv. For this kind of money other hotels have a better one.

Review 12:I like the location and that inside the building there are several options (f.e. Diner, bar with wifi for hanging out, chillout/sauna type place) Great restaurants in the neighbourhood, supermarket close-by, parking @ hotel.

Review 13:Room was big enough for a weekend but might struggle if it was a longer stay.

Review 14:Staff are excellent, The Hotel decor is very cool . Location is good just 4 stops on the train from the centre....Bed was excellent, great shower.

Review 15:Vibrant and lively in the common areas, but quiet in the rooms. Rooms are small, but quiet cleverly thought out and cozy. Staff were friendly and professional. Nothing to complain about, we had a very pleasant stay.

Review 16:no information booklet in room. Therefore not clear what breakfast times were or options to check out late etc.

Review 17:atmosphere. nice and hip, modern design

Review 18:The room was not very large but nice, great bed however the overall quality (building materials, shampoo etc.) is not that great.

Review 19:The bar in the hotel is great! The location is conveniently next to the metro, and the vibe is cool.

Review 20:There noise from the street was loud but nothing a pair of ear plugs couldn't fix.

Review 21:The rooms we're fantastic! Well laid out. The view was wonderful. The staff were great. We really enjoyed the roof top hot tubs and sauna. The beds were comfortable. The restaurant was great too! The food was really good and that staff were very pleasant. I would highly recommend this hotel, and look forward to coming back one day.

Review 22:Very friendly, very clean. I have seen a lot of hotels in amsterdam but I think this one is the best, also with pets. With the underground metro 6 minuts to the centre.

Review 23:Maybe sligtly dusty room for someone with allergies like me.

Review 24:Everything, the design, the people, the cafe, the perfect bar with the view, the bikes, every little detail...the inspiration!

Review 25:The staff should smile more. Breakfast too expensive for what they offer. They should decrease the price or increase the choices of food.

Review 26:The atmosphere is very quirky. At weekends looks more like a trendy club than anything else with three choices from live bands in the basement, disco in the rooftop and a chilled bar by the reception. We felt no need to leave the hotel at all. Amsterdam OOST is worth visiting you can find nice restaurants, bars and even coffee shops away from the tourist masses.

Review 27:Lots of cute touches with things like comment cards and local tips cards - lots of unique bits of personality. Receptionist was very helpful and remembered me by first name, which always surprises me. Great breakfast and then nice relax in sauna on the roof. Good wifi. If you know Amsterdam then the location is actually pretty good - on the Metro line and near 2 tram lines so navigating the city is great.

Review 28:Staff were a little unfriendly and not personable when asked questions. The lighting in the room was too dim. Needs more lights and a full length mirror.

Review 29:Great location, amazing food and great atmosphere in the bar/club.

Review 30:Regular rooms a little Spartan. No chair (one stool). No carpet (painted concrete floor). THIN walls.

Review 31:Location and price. Very good restaurant. Right on metro (Wibautstraat Sta). Upgraded rooms good.

Review 32:The card machine didn't work & I ended up calling my bank as I was continually told my card wasn't being authorised when it was a problem with their system. The embarrassment associated with being told that your card wasn't being authorised when it was a connection issue. No apology.

Review 33:Design hotel with well though out rooms. Great view of the area especially from the top floor. Interesting touches around the hotel encourage you to stop and investigate. Across the road from the metro so direct access to central Amsterdam.

Review 34:No tea or coffee making facilities in bedroom, sparsely decorated, no cupboards to unpack clothes into, no carpet, strange shower room with glass into bedroom so next to no privacy if you wanted to watch who was in the shower, oh and a broken toilet seat. One of the main reasons for staying here was the rooftop spa, tried to use it but one night there was a party up there and no room, the next day it hadn't been cleaned by 0930 in the morning and all the water was cold anyway. Nasty!

Review 35:Not far from Metro station, reasonably quiet, nice buzz to reception and bar area.

Review 36:No facilities for making coffee/tea and no fridge. Breakfast is not included, you have to pay an extra 10 euro's. There is no comfortabel chair in the room and no closets. If you need something from the reception you have to go there because there is no telephone in the room. This is also a problem for guests that do not have a (dutch) cellphone. I understand that the concept of the hotel is minimalistic and i like that but i do not think it should be on account of the comfort of the guests.

Review 37:Nice design, great location and nice staff. The view from the roof is beautiful! I also loved the big windows in the room and de design of the bathroom.

Review 38:I found the breakfast was quite expensive. The 2 of us, spending 7 nights there = 140 Euros in breakfast alone. Can't adjust the tv in the room opposite the bed, so it looks almost black when you try and watch it.

Review 39:The Hotel is built above a metro station so the transport into the centre of Amsterdam is fantastic. Staff were friendly, and the rooms were neat. The quirky elevator games and general hipster feel of the hotel was a welcome change from usual hotels.

Review 40:Expensive cocktails :(

Review 41:Amazing location, amazing night life!!!! Friendly staff, hot tubs looked fab! Great environment to make friends, doka was my favourite/ especially on a Saturday night!

Review 42:Uninterested staff, poor service. The floor was so cold and they don't even provide slippers. It's just a hipster place with style, not comfortable to stay.

Review 43:Good style

Review 44:The only negative I would say is the lighting (or lack of) in the rooms. Proved quite difficult for 4 young girls to get ready. Everything else made up for it though.

Review 45:Although the hotel was a bit out from central Amsterdam, the metro is right outside and you can be in central in 10 minutes. Loved the club night we booked this hotel last minute when our first one got cancelled but we are so glad it did! Best hotel ever would definitely recommend it.

Review 46:The floors

Review 47:Wonderful concept hotel with creative details everywhere. It is also a very lively place that you can see Dutch yuppies and creative types spending time at the lobby floor; working, having meetings and hanging out at the bar. The community feeling really amazed me and I would never want to stay somewhere else in Amsterdam. Considering the price, the rooms are also surprisingly very clean and spacious. Really good value.

Review 48:No bad experience. The phone in the room would be helpful so one can call the reception desk instead of walking there

Review 49:It is a very fanky hotel, a lot of humorous touches as signs, decor, etc. It is clean, comfortable, though minimalistic

Review 50:None

Review 51:Very friendly staff who welcomed me as a loyal customer. The bed was very comfortable, with a firm mattress. Breakfast in the Canvas Restaurant was excellent, and set me up for a long day at the RAI exhibition centre (3 days running). The hotel's location is 4 stops from the RAI on the metro.

Review 52:I would like a bit more choice for the breakfast and maybe a toaster.

Review 53:Loved everything! Great location so close to the metro station, the two bars, friendly staff. The room was really comfortable and the perfect size. Also liked that as we had a late flight, we could keep our bags there after checking out for no extra cost.

Review 54:The food in the evening - roof restaurant - was terrible. I had fish which was so salty I could not eat it. The others had beef which was so tough that they had problems cutting it.

Review 55:Very good location. diverse staff.

Review 56:I had a small room which has hardly space for a suitcase. Also, walls appear very thin and you can hear the neighbours in detail.

Review 57:A 'different' Hotel with a history and a nice set-up with Restaurant on top-floor and bar at ground-level.

Review 58:Volkshotel is described as a hotel for everyone, and although i was allowed to stay, i have to say the staff and guest looked very bemused by my non hipster self. From being ignored at the bar for 10 minutes at a time, to having a stand off with the bouncer for the club when just trying to get to my room, it was clear i wasnt arsty enough for them. That being said, the staff did all that was asked of them, book taxi's etc, just not always with a smile. Oh and the hotel is NO SMOKING! We didnt realise when we booked. If you are looking for somewhere to go and enjoy the fruits of amsterdam, Volkshotel is not the place.

Review 59:Volkshotel is a clean and modern Building with plenty of character and lots going on. The rooms are very pleasant with all you would need. Beds comfortable, good shower. The down stairs Bar is nice enough to stop in for a drink on the way out but not somewhere i could sit all night.

Review 60:No complaints.

Review 61:Friendly and professional staff from reception to bar to restaurant to cleaning. Fantastic views of Oost Amsterdam. Would book this hotel again.

Review 62:Even size of the standard room was terrible (how could be the budget room?!) No refrigerator Toilet and bath design Lack of closet No special facility inside the room Everything is charged at order like restaurant not a hotel! Price at Rai occassions are terrible

Review 63:Atmosphere concept Friendly lobby in the afternoons Youth area

Review 64:I had to go home :(

Review 65:Everything to do with this place is perfect. Couldn't have chosen a better hotel for a quiet break away with my partner. We will 100% be back here.

Review 66:Great hotel really quirky. Facilities were great. All you could hope for and much. Metro is practally out side with trains every 3 mins into town. 4 stops away from central station.

Review 67:Really quirky hotel, nice to be a bit out of the centre but with good transport links. AMAZING views, friendly staff. Jazz in the bar downstairs was amazing

Review 68:we did not have a bad experience however it was a comment regarding the rooms. If the lighting in the room could be a little brighter that would have been good (its a little difficult for girls to do their make up) and also the glass door for the shower. we could not walk pass the shower as we could see in (you may need something to cover up.

Review 69:The staff were so friendly and helped us throughout our stay. The place is amazing with so many facilities to use: bar, restaurant, cafe, hot tub, sauna. The size of the rooms were big even though they were four of us sharing. The location was outside the metro stop (not far to walk) even with a supermarket a minute walk away :)

Review 70:The personnel was not very friendly and when I was taking my bag out from the luggage room, the receptionist did not even check if that bag was mine. Very small room with a huge column in the middle. I was not able to sleep due to the light coming in - blinds were not effective.

Review 71:Very good coffee downstairs Very modern decoration Creative environment

Review 72:The bathroom with a transparent glass wall is a slightly unsettling idea. Also the "unfinished" room's floors didn't feel very nice to walk on.

Review 73:Service was great and fast, room was very clean and well maintained.

Review 74:toilet a bit smelly in our room!!no carpet on the floor in the bedroom.

Review 75:liked the very retro style.huge family room no 106.table tennis a hit with my teenage kids.hot tubs on the roof was fun!

Review 76:The wall of the bathroom was glass with a just panel in the center, not for everyone. Noise from the road and other rooms was quite loud, especially the road.

Review 77:Loved the feel of the hotel, it's quirky and relaxed

Review 78:The club was so noisy all night we were hearing the music The room is so small for two persons

Review 79:The style of the hotel The room is bot bad but very small for two persons The bathhouse which is located on the terrace

Review 80:Loved the quirkiness of the hotel. The staff were very accommodating and friendly. We very much enjoyed the bar and restaurant. Highly recommend staying at this unique hotel.

Review 81:Nothing.

Review 82:Great funky hotel just minutes from centre by metro. Really busy hotel with nightclub which was mobbed at the weekend but it was very quiet in the room. Will defo be back.

Review 83:The room we had was very small, it was ok for 3 nights but I wouldn't recommend for longer stays. No clothing storage.

Review 84:The hot tubs and sauna on the roof are great and there is a good view over the whole city!

Review 85:it was rather cold in the room and the heat could only be partly regulated, it would have been great to have a kettle in the room to make tea/coffee as breakfast is only served earliest at 7 am

Review 86:I very much enjoyed the unconventional creative environment and the proximity to town.

Review 87:Nothing bad to say about this place

Review 88:The hotel had a great setup The location was a short walk from the main centre, which was good to stretch the legs every time we headed out and about The bike hire was easy and it was fun

Review 89:The bathroom is looked in on by the room, you only have to stand on the bed to see someone on the toilet.

Review 90:Great for a young couple, very fashionable and fun.

Review 91:paying for parking....your fee includes bed toilet shower TV bed quilt and safe...so why do we have to pay for parking???

Review 92:What a change...this hotel was unique...we loved it ...the rooms were all different ...brill...

Review 93:Nothing outside the building to identify it as the Volkshotel, just a tiny sign to show the car park entrance. The double room was tiny with partially screened toilet. Also, try as we might, we couldn't get the room any cooler than uncomfortably warm so we had to have the window open all night with all the associated street noise from below. No tea or coffee facilities.

Review 94:This upbeat and exiting hotel on the outskirts of Amsterdam is great for the younger clientele. The nearest Metro stop is just 200mtrs from the entrance and takes around 5 minutes to get you to Central Station.

Review 95:Column in the middle of the room was a huge negative, could barely move in the room. Also, some staff members did not seem willing to help out when asked for assistance.

Review 96:Lovely atmosphere, quiet neighbourhood, just a few steps away from the Tram and Subway. Had a great view from the room (6th floor)

Review 97:The fire alarms were bad...really bad I did a lot of stair walking. The subway although convenient had a broken lift due to an injury i had that was really bad too with luggage.

Review 98:Worked out ok got used to the deliberate basicness it was just what i needed as a solo traveller

Review 99:Little too pricey for what it was. Reception took ages to check us in... Breakfast included would have been better considering it was just a small buffet and the room was very basic.

Review 100:Rooms nice, great location and facilities!

Review 101:None.

Review 102:Clean, funky but quite small. Nowhere to place clothes etc other than hooks on the concrete pillar that dominates the available space in that room. Probably just that room/s given the lay-out.

Review 103:Lighting in the room was a bit dim So getting ready at night could be a bit of a struggle. But apart from that there wasn't anything else.

Review 104:Everything was brilliant, canvas was espcecially good too.

Review 105:No tea and coffee facilities in the room. Pillows were also quite uncomfortable.

Review 106:Loved hotel design. It's so close to the metro station so it's very easy to travel around the city.

Review 107:No tea or coffee in the rooms but the price was low so can't complain

Review 108:A 'wow' hotel. Everywhere you looked it made you say 'wow look at that!'

Review 109:The room did not have a phone. It looked like a bunker with concrete walls and floor. The hallways were very dark.

Review 110:The bed was comfortable. Breakfast was good

Review 111:The property smells and is pretty dirty. Air conditioning was failing. No windows to open. Staff inexperienced and not customer oriented. The staff was pretty aggressive when we where 15 minutes late with our check out. We had paid an extra 15 euro s and although we where a bit late I found this kind of attitude not customer friendly. My partner is blind and has a speech problem so when somebody came in and talked to him it made him scared for he did not expect that at all! I was transferring the luggage. I informed the staff that I was 10 minutes late but I would return for my partner but the other person did not communicate this to the other. So ... She understood afterwards but she was not polite at all in the beginning like we were some kind of criminals. Anyway they forget that we paid 129 euro's!!! For one night and that kind of behaviour is dumb.

Review 112:The breakfast was abundant and with much variety and view of the restaurant superb. Nice music and good food. I liked that it was a trendy place to get a drink in the evening even though we did not use it. I think it is a nice club to hang out.

Review 113:Didn't have towels in our room when we checked in but we were allowed to check in 4 hours before we were officially allowed too, hence the reason for no towels

Review 114:The whole atmosphere of the hotel was brilliant,a chilled cool place to stay in

Review 115:lighting in the room was a bit lacking

Review 116:The hotel design was fun and very avant-garde and amenities were clean. Staff were fantastic and helpful and the location was great.

Review 117:location too far from downtown, bar closes too early, doesn't have a phone to call reception in your room, this was terrible.

Review 118:room really clean, staff really gentle

Review 119:The room was not child friendly at all and staff could not offer an alternative that was. Consequently we spent most of our time there stressed the children would hurt themselves. It would be great if you had family rooms tho appreciate we are not your target audience.

Review 120:Very stylish

Review 121:The inside temperature can not be set over 24 degrees and that would be OK if outside would be warm or hot, but when you come in from 14 degrees, windy and rainy weather, you need your room to be warm. Also, they have no carpets on the cement floor and this enhances the cold feeling in the room. And no, I did not enjoy the raw ceiling mixed with the rest of the decoration details. I felt like I was in a cave when looking up.

Review 122:The bed was awesome. The staff was very nice and willing to help, the overall style of the building creates the idea of special, the windows were big and the proximity of the metro station makes it a good choice.

Review 123:Amazing hotel all round. Funky, quirky and exciting!!! We only stayed one night but we Massively enjoyed our stay at Volkshotel. We are returning to Amsterdam in November and we deffinitrely will be staying there again. Staff were friendly, helpful and quirky in their own ways but that matched the hotel perfectly. Very Very pleased with our stay. Highly recommended!!!

Review 124:The concrete floor in the room was quite cold.

Review 125:We loved the whole vibe of the hotel, friendly but not pushy staff. The ground floor cafe area with the grand piano was lovely and chilled and the top floor was very unique. The rooms were one of a kind and very spacious

Review 126:Nothing. Very happy with the hotel.

Review 127:Loved the proximity to the town centre. So close to everything - transport, tourist sites and all. Hotel clean comfortable, room was well appointed and staff extremely helpful. Will book there again if and when I go back.

Review 128:Expensive parking, breakfast at extra cost,in-house club with noisy customers leaving at 4 am, terrible view of tatty carpark with air con noise, early morning delivery staff shouting in said car park.

Review 129:I missed tea/coffee making equipment inside the room. No minibar & telephone in the room.

Review 130:Excellent friendly staff.. The location is very good, being next to the metro station.Very nice view from the night club at the upper floor.

Review 131:The only thing I missed was tea/coffee making facilities in the room which would have been welcomed because the bar downstairs didn't open until 8am.

Review 132:Rooftop terrace bar was lovely for afternoon/early evening drinks. Staff were also excellent and couldn't do enough for you.

Review 133:Room are not confortable at all, there is no ammenities such as hand soap, cup....and I will not mention flip flops (they could have a really nice funky flip flop with cool hotel image). Bed and pillow are not confortable at all! Toilet design is the worst ever, taking a shower is same as cleaning the bathroom at the same time since they had the brillant idea to make an open bathroom style. Once we said our bathroom was with problems, they said sorry and changed us for other room, not sure if it was a joke or what but they changed us same room number but in a upper floor with same problem (well it wasnt the view the problem)! In this case, we give up and didnt complain anymore and went out to enjoy teh city. Plus in a such cool hotel atmosphere not having a mini-bar is a shame! Price is not worth I will recommend to stay in other hotel and just go there to enjoy the restaurant 7th Floor and drinks at the reception.

Review 134:Hotel concept was great, has everything to work if they do changes on the basic that is having a good bed, minibar and hotel amenities. The atmosphere is perfect to enjoy the hotel, restaurant Canvas is really good and bar at the reception is awesome!

Review 135:Perfect location - slightly out of centre but 5/7 minute cycle away. Lots of great restaurants and bars nearby and the hotel provide a really cool map with lots of recommendations. The staff are really friendly and accommodating, and all the different areas of the hotel are brilliant - from the rooftop hot tub and sauna to the café/bar/club. Didn't want to leave and have recommended to all my friends - fantastic value for money! Cannot wait to come back.

Review 136:Had to have a cold shower in the morning as the hot water was off. One of those things I guess but had to get dressed again and go down to reception to find out why?? A little note under the door may have helped as in sure everyone probably had to find out for them selves?

Review 137:Excellent view from the 6th floor across the city.

Review 138:I suggest a better cleaning of the huge windows.

Review 139:We liked the room. It was well organized and the design was nice. The view from our bed was amazing, all the city was at our feet. All pieces of forniture were well designed.

Review 140:there was no kettle in the rooms and room service facility as well as telephone!Water pressure was low and sometimes stopped during shower!!

Review 141:It is absolutely different experience!
