Reviews for Marken Guesthouse
Review 1:No Complaints
Review 2:Great location, great facilities, helpful staff. perfect base to explore Bergen and beyond. We travelled with young children and everyone was really helpful.
Review 3:Rooms are a little bit noisy. Not entirely sure why, I did feel as if the window wouldn't seal quite right.
Review 4:Everything was very clean and the shared facilities were always tidy and had everything needed. Which was a relief since many places we have stayed previously were not kept to such high standards. All staff were overly welcoming and always happy to help. When an issue arose they were quick to fix it.
Review 5:Very basic hostel. Rooms and beds kinda shabby, better the kitchen and bathrooms.
Review 6:Really nice staff, clean, and GREAT position - close to both station and city center. You can't find a cheaper place in Bergen for what this place offers. If you are travelling in low season (winter), like me, you might end up in a room alone which was a treat. Linen provided, towels are 20 NOK.
Review 7:I wish I'd got a double bed instead of two singles.
Review 8:I liked it was quite hotel and had a great late check in system. They were close to the train station and restaurants.
Review 9:What I didn't like are the people sleeping in the hostel. They don't clean up after themselves and leave the showers and the kitchen in a very dirty condition. It's sad because the staff is really making effort to keep everything clean! The toilets are very small but they have a sink in the same room which could be important for some people. The rooms are small, too but if you use the hostel to sleep only, you should be fine. The staff can be cold at the beginning but if you get to talk to them, they are very friendly! They don't have 24/7 reception. If you want to arrive at a later time, you should contact them before. It doesn't cost anything but they need to know or else you get fined with 20 € or so (which is completely OK). The kitchen utensils are dirty and the kitchen in general is not very clean. This is the fault of the people not cleaning up after themselves. They don't clean frying pans and pots properly so they still have oil and some old food on them which you need to clean before you use it. Like it's so hard to wash your dishes after you use them. I really wonder how some people live at home. Do they also leave food on their dishes and put them in the cupboard?
Review 10:The hotel is very central. You can get to the city center in about 5 mins walking. The nearest restaurants are about 1 min walking. There are also a few super markets about 3 min away. They have a kitchen with everything you need, dish washer, microwave, oven, stove. Showers are OK, they are seperated by doors completely covering the showers. The dining room is fine, you can play games with others or just eat your meal. The "lounge" is great, you can sit and chil. The staff is friendly but seem a little bit cold. If you get to talk to them a little bit about any topic, they get warm pretty fast and they are much more friendlier. All in all, I had a great experience and would definitely recommend this hostel to anyone travelling on their own. I wouldn't recommend this for families or older people (like 50+) because it can get loud if you have people in your room making Skype calls in the middle of the night or start sawing logs... you know what I mean! Bring your bed sheets and towels, or else you need to pay for them. You get a locker to put your clothes and other stuff in it. It's locked with a key. I was first confused about the bed sheets and I thought they meant the whole bedclothes like blanket and pillow but you only need the sheets. They have free WiFi as everywhere else in Norway (what a great country!)
Review 11:Someone may be having a party outside so it's very noisy. And the reception closes very early.
Review 12:Very good location and it's clean and there's a kitchen with everything you need.
Review 13:Quality of knives wasn't the best, actually the worst I've ever experienced. But otherwise the kitchen and everything was really clean and good!
Review 14:I loved the atmosphere at the hostel, the staff were very nice and helpful too! Great location, free sheets and towel for 20 NOK
Review 15:The 10 bed female room is terrible! The bed is not stable. If you sleep on the bottom of the bed, you will know how it terrible is. When people sleep and move on the top bed, the whole bed is shaking. In addition, the toilet is a mess so do the room. But maybe that is because of some roommates have bad habits.
Review 16:I stay in Room 420, odor of fish, heater not realy in function, kitchen is so dirty. I so surprise if they can get certificate of excelent from trip advisor. Please keep concern on the clean and comfortable things, dont make other guess dissapointed anymore.
Review 17:Reception services is very helpful even so many guess come together but She (young poland lady) serve us so patient and clear.
Review 18:They have weird times to open the hostel(reception) if you arrive after specific time you have to tell them, if not , you will sleep outside, if you want to make your check out before 9:30 am it's no way to give them the keys of the room, but they have the policy if you don't return the keys you will be charge with 200no, fair right?when it's no body to give the keys...
Review 19:The location it's exclent , near to everything.
Review 20:I stay in a 4-people room, there are only 2 places for charging plugs. It could be better if the hotel could provide a platoon insert for this kind of room. (Just a recommendation to better improve~)
Review 21:Nice choice to stay in Bergen. It's very close to the train station, and about 7-10min walking distance to main attractions. The room is clean, and the heat is reeeally warm The staff speak good English and are very friendly. I would definitely recommend this place!
Review 22:The kitchen needed to be cleaner even if this is partially up to other guests. For a decent size hostel it would have been good to have more than one washer/dryer.
Review 23:The location was perfect within walking distance of the bus/train stations, the wharf area and the funicular up to Mt Fløyen. There was a laundry, kitchen accessible to guests. There was adequate bathroom facilities even staying in a 10 bed dorm.
Review 24:Not the fault of the guesthouse but there was no hairdryer and i forgot to take my own with me, so i unfortunately could not wash my hair
Review 25:Good value for money, location is perfect. And the bed was so comfy we wanted to stay a few days longer just for sleeping :) I really like the design of the place, especially the reindeer pillow :) it felt like home after a long rainy day. The staff was really helpful by printing out our boarding passes.
Review 26:Creaking beds, due to a lot of people, it's hard to sleep. Someone going out during the night, someone comes, and etc.
Review 27:Stuff was really friendly, and ready to help with sightseeing, what to visit in Bergen, and etc. Also nice kitchen, and surrounded by good people in hostel.
Review 28:Missing pillow. The staff provided me with a key to the locker room where I was suppose to get the duvet and pillow. However, during night when I am about to sleep, there was no pillow. I had to use the duvet as my pillow and use the duvet cover as blanket. Good thing the room was warm.
Review 29:Good location and facilities.
Review 30:This was the best hostel I've ever stayed in...great wifi...great views....great facilities and felt like one big home and centrally located too. Fantastic value and it has won many awards for many years running.
Review 31:Our room was quite cold, the window was very drafty. The toilets are right next to the lounge area, not the end of the world but would have been nicer if there were set out more similar to the showers.
Review 32:The hostel had a very nice, laid back atmosphere. The kitchen facilities were good will plenty of space to eat your meals. Our room was really nicely decorated too!
Review 33:The kitchen was rather disorganised!
Review 34:The staff were lovely and happy to help, the room was small but everything in it was clean, and furniture was well picked for the space. We even had a full length mirror!
Review 35:Clean and comfortable, good saff cosines,
Review 36:When people leve. May be you can find one Connery for us to leve the food we are do not need to take it with us ,then someone else can used it . Because food it also expensive to throw away when some else can used it too.
Review 37:Friendly staff, good clean rooms and nice place to spend dark evenings. The place was full of travellers around the world but still it was peaceful and quiet.
Review 38:It's minor stuff - the lower bed sheet doesn't fit well so it's a bit awkward to keep it on.
Review 39:Very near the train, and it has an elevator! The staff are really easy going and nice. The locker was HUGE like you can fit nearly everything in there.
Review 40:- squeaky beds - Old pillows that need changing
Review 41:- Location to train station - Good Wi-Fi - Laundry facilities - Great reception staff - Luggage lockers
Review 42:So glad there was a way into the office to use the hotel phone in the middle of the night...when I left my room to shower and discovered my key was back in the locked room! The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and kindly helpful...even when I locked myself out in the middle of the night! Also they helped me communicate with future housing since I do not travel with a mobile or computer connections.
Review 43:They put me in a tiny room in a triangle corner. Very uncomfortable. Breakfast not included. The rest is ok
Review 44:Everything ok. Very good location. Helpful staff
Review 45:- my matress was very uncomfortable (felt the springs) - not enough sockets in the rooms
Review 46:- a well equiped kitchen! - clean showers and toilets - nice, cozy place with sofa to get to know others - best elevator ever
Review 47:- limited check-in time, not convenient for late check-in and early check-out - very simple and basic amentities
Review 48:- friendly staff - great location, just near central station
Review 49:Really big hostel but it doesn't feel like it- everyone was clean and there are lots of areas to chill out. The kitchen had everything you needed, bathrooms were shared but good and rooms were comfortable.
Review 50:The corridors smelled a bit bad... Something like that of dried fish. But it might have been a smell from the kitchen. Nobody can be blamed for that.
Review 51:It is walkable distance from the train station. The linen was super clean! The check-in and check out is so hassle free! The staff responds to email pretty fast. Unlike most other hostels I have been to, here I felt like nobody is watching over me or giving instructions :)
Review 52:Reception is not open 24 hours, so you will have to wait a bit to leave your luggage if you come by early. BUT they will arrange for you to be able to come in if you arrive after closing hours as long as you notify in advance.
Review 53:Great location, right in the city center near airport bus drop off and train station. Helpful and nice staff. I really liked the fully equipped kitchen, no need to buy at restaurants which are expensive in Bergen.
Review 54:The place was very centrally located, lovely staff member welcomed me with huge smile and all the information I requested. The hostel was very clean and quiet, had plenty of different facilities, kitchen, chill area, little lamp for each bed in a 10 bed dorm. Additionally the 10 bed female dorm where I stayed offered a locker to each guest and I love the fact that the lockers were placed behind the door leading to the bathroom. This way regardless of people getting up and packing at different times of the day, all the rest of us who wanted to sleep, could do that in peace. Very much recommend.
Review 55:The room are too small and there is no power supply for upper bed.
Review 56:The staff is really nice and there are lots of tourists which can meet people from everywhere.
Review 57:The pillows need to be desperately changed!
Review 58:Great location - only 5 mins to the train station. A nice supermarket & bakery (Godt brod) around the corner. Lots of bathrooms & toilets for everyone & great storage/locker space in the shared dorms.
Review 59:we stayed for 4 nights - during our stay our room was never cleaned, floors were dirty and no one took out the garbage from the garbage can
Review 60:the location
Review 61:Nothing.
Review 62:The location was good. It took 5 minutes walk from train station and 5minutes walk from Bryggen. The kitchen was wonderful. You can findeverything you need in the kitchen. The room was big as a hostel.
Review 63:1) both pillows and bed were too weak and unyielding to support your body and neck. 2) the room was too tiny to put and open 2 trunks. 3) it might be too many people in this hostal, the kitchen was messy and dirty. it's just fine for 1night stay, but not longer.
Review 64:1) location is good, only 10 or 15mins by walk to the scene in Bergen. Pls take your time to get some food ingredients at Remain1000, it's in a reasonable price. 2) The room's window was in a good view for city day and night view.
Review 65:My luggage is about 25 inches carrier but it didn't fit on the locker. So I needed to put it out still it was OK for me, but it might be uncomfortable for somebody even they said it's OK for them either.
Review 66:Friendly staffs. Good location.
Review 67:The room was smelling smoke when we arrived, maybe from another room and there were hairs on the bed mattress, so a little disappointed by the over whole cleanness. But the staff was very helpful and kind, nice common kitchenette and very central.
Review 68:Having to make own bed and paying extra to have a towel. No bathroom soaps.
Review 69:Location was good and friendly reception when checked in. Never saw anybody else from staff.
Review 70:Location is great! Friendly staff, good & clean facilities! Self service kitchen and two super markets close by. We traveled with our dog, and the rooms were spacious enough to fit all 3 of us! :)
Review 71:Attic room was too small fir two bunk beds and kept banging head on the angled supports. Also two nights bad sleep because of a bad snoorer in room from 2 - 6 am and had to keep waking him up . Heavy snorers should pay fir their own room . Provided with ear plugs by kind staff helped a bit . Don't get stuck in the room with him . Otherwise perfect stay and fabulous staff .
Review 72:Location and facilities very good
Review 73:- Restroom and bathroom are shared
Review 74:- Good location, not far from drop point of airport bus - Nice view; houses on the hill, from my room and kitchen - Nice room decoration
Review 75:Hotel is comfortable and clean. Common space is very nice looking. Rooms well furnished. Very close distance to most interesting places in the city. I highly recommend this hotel. (I only wish there were some basic cooking products, like salt and pepper, as it's pointless to buy 1kg in the grocery store just to make scrambled eggs..)
Review 76:The rooms were very warm, my stay was late September and we had the window open to cool it down because the heat was running. There weren't enough outlets in the room. I was a top bunker so I had to leave my electronics plugged in right by the door.
Review 77:Great location, close to train station and tourist information. Staff was very cheerful and helpful. Place was clean.
Review 78:The haul is too narrow and have to walk a long way to toilet or bathroom.
Review 79:The location is nearly in the sentrum place. Close to train, bus station and the harbor . Nice to stay if you are travel alone and wish a low budget.
Review 80:Small rooms overcrowded could not sleep due to roommate snoring. Bathroom not clean.
Review 81:Location is great: just a few minutes to the train station and airport buses.
Review 82:Towel not provided.
Review 83:The location is good, near to the bus and railway station. The staffs are friendly and helpful. When I arrived the guesthouse about 12.30noon, my room already ready. The guest house is very clean as The staffs ready make a good job to clean every corner of the guesthouse.
Review 84:The room is so small
Review 85:Location and cleanliness. The staffs are also friendly. We have checked out that day but they allow us to store our luggage, let us wait in their living room, use their facilities (toilet, bathroom and wifi) while we are waiting
Review 86:We wanted to drop our bags at the reception but had to wait until 9.15am to do so as no one was about. My travel mate booked weeks after me and paid less for the same room.
Review 87:Central location. Lockers provided and fast internet. Kitchen well equipped and there's a Rima grocery store around the corner which is open mon to sat.
Review 88:Very poor ventilation on the floor with many high heat producing halogen bright pot light that are on 24/7 which made it uncomfortably warm all the time. Showers had no fans and are small so they are also very steamy all the time. Some rooms are quite a bit nicer than others. Ours was quite poor with no space and old beds.
Review 89:Several washrooms that were always stocked and quite clean. Showers were plentiful. Dining area had good tables and chairs and fridges with a good system for keeping track of items.
Review 90:There should be more toilets given the amount of people they can host.
Review 91:Good location and facilities, including a well equiped kitchen. That helps to keep the budget under control since the overall prices around the city are not "friendly".
Review 92:location just next to the city centre, train and bus station. It's very convenient. The staff was very helpful and cooperative. I did not feel any inconvenience. Next time I would prefer to stay with you.
Review 93:Some of the kitchen equipment has seen better days, but it all works.
Review 94:Staff were very friendly, location was ideal as all the major tourist attractions were in walking distance (Bryggen, Fløyen, the Harbour to name a few). Also very near the railway station and a budget supermarket. Excellent value for money, considering how expensive a country Norway is.
Review 95:The bathrooms are quite tricky, as their location is not really explained and intuitive. I could not find a real sink to brush my teeth or shave except for one in the common showers room. Showers could really use more and better hangers, it is quite challenging to organize your stuff without having anything fall down on the wet floor.
Review 96:Very good if you're travelling on a budget and do not care much for comfort and luxuries. The rooms are quite clean, there is a locker for everyone and a small table for working etc. There are numerous places to sit and chill and free Wi-Fi. Staff is very helpful and friendly. The location is very close to Bryggen and the central station.
Review 97:Not much
Review 98:Everything was just fine. Quiet and fairly comfy, Wifi worked well, kitchen was properly equipped, no problem to go out and come inside 24 hours with the card key. BUT cautious.. seems that there's no way to check in after 23:00 cuz the receiptionist won't be there and only the machine will answer your phone call.
Review 99:Finally, a hostel with many bathrooms and showers!! A massive dining area and quaint lounging area. The hostel was peaceful and quiet, even with many people staying there. Very clean and all around excellent. A great place and would definitely recommend it.
Review 100:No breakfast. Also, there could have been more bathroom access and better location for showers.
Review 101:It was the price of a hostel with the comfort of a hotel. Staff was very friendly.
Review 102:Nothing in particular. Maybe a little too hot in the rooms. We were sleeping with the window open (ok, it was august)
Review 103:The location, just a couple of minutes from the railway station. Perfect if you are planning a train trip to e.g., Myrdal/Flåm. A supermarket was near. The staff was always cheerful. Lot of (shared) bathroms and showers.
Review 104:Nothing. It was great.
Review 105:Seriously a awesome hostel in the center of the city. It is minutes away from Bryggen and the sea. Great Wifi, Great atmosphere and nice showers with hot hot water! Yaaaaa. The staff was amazing. There was a blonde hair girl with short hair that spoke great English and she had the most amazing welcoming smile! She let us keep out belongings behind the front desk while our rooms were getting ready. The guy behind the desk at night was also very helpful. The place is very clean, they have a computer you can use if needed.
Review 106:That I had to pay for a towel. But honestly I didn't even compare with other places. This might be normal for this category of accommodation.
Review 107:Location. And I arrived after closing time so they'd arranged for me to open the doors with my credit card.
Review 108:well, it was ok, can´t say anything negative compared to price etc.
Review 109:I liked that it was central, i had been staying in Norway for some weeks and was on my way back home to Iceland. It was very good compared to norwegian prices :-)
Review 110:facilities could be improved: only 2 common toilets / gender (crowded in the morning), 2 plug-ins in the room (mine was with 4 beds, so imagine that each of us wanted to charge our devices). Metal bunk beds, making a lot of noises when moving. Kitchen rather small and crowded during mornings / evenings.
Review 111:Good location, pretty central. Other than this, nothing special, it's a hostel, meaning beds in a room.
Review 112:There is a semi-busy road right beside that can be a little noisy at night.
Review 113:It is right by the city center and close to the bus and train stations. The wifi worked very well, and there are a couple of nice areas for lounging.
Review 114:No real communal area where people hang out, but I still met really nice people!
Review 115:Great location, close to everything. Nice people (staff and visitors). They provide big closets with locks and closed off toilets and showers so no chance of your stuff rolling to the other showers when you drop something. Showers have a stool and hooks where you can put your stuff on and they will stay dry.
Review 116:The bunk beds did not have privacy curtains and their own power sockets. The location was a bit far from city center. The bathrooms could've used better lighting.
Review 117:The rooms are big and airy. The cabinets are spacious enough to accommodate my luggage. The kitchen and dining area is huge!
Review 118:The one male receptionist was pretty rude to us on our last day, a big drift from the super sweet ladies who worked the 2 days before him. Its a bummer that there isn't a breakfast, considering how expensive Norway is. For the price of the room, you would think you would get it.
Review 119:The rooms were small but very clean and nice! Cute little poshtel. The reception people were kind, except for one man on our last day was seriously rude. The showers/bathrooms were always very clean. The location was perfect- cute little cobblestone street a few minutes away from everything. Easy to get to, close to bus station and rail station (5 min)
Review 120:The reception is closed over night and there was a group of lads drinking and making a lot of noise until 1am. It would have been better to have some staff there to sort out the situation
Review 121:Staff were super friendly. Location is great. We were even able to check in early as the room had already been cleaned. It's a very clean hotel/hostel. Kitchen facilities are good some kind of breakfast included would be nice for the price paid.
Review 122:The staff is very nice; bed linen is included in the price; and the best thing is the coffee machine in the common area which serves you hot drinks for just 10 kroner. Kitchen is also good and has plenty of utensils, etc.
Review 123:Very bad bed. No free towels. The price is still very high, even though you don't have own bath room.
Review 124:Very clean hostel. Near to railway station and walking distance to center (well the city is small.....)
Review 125:The lamp beside the bed doesn't work.
Review 126:Near to bus station and also fish market, great for catching the bus to airport. Many shower rooms and toilets available, never need to wait for my turn to use the toilet or shower room. Lift is provided in this property. Nice staff at the reception, he gave us clear information on how the room functions etc. Wifi works great.
Review 127:The room is really small and the blanket doesn't seem very clean. We requested twin bed but it's bunk bed instead.
Review 128:Location is quiet and close to centre.
Review 129:4-bed room (number 434) is extremely small. Could feel the mattress springs on by back (top bed of the bunk).
Review 130:Location near the very center of Bergen. Free wifi.
Review 131:The showers are not all in well condition, some of their hot water balance are not good. Hard to get hot water.
Review 132:The facilities in kitchen are sufficient. Living are is comfortable and has a good view.
Review 133:The bad thing is the electric plugs in the room...there were not separate plugs for the high and low bunk (at least in my room). It's not the greatest thing for setting phone alarms and trying to shut off to not wake everyone else up. Cords reach but it would be nice to have a plug for the high bunk.
Review 134:Very good value for Bergen. There were also families there which was a good sign to me. I think most people use it as a one night stop off before exploring fjords, or as their home base for exploring fjords. Staff was helpful in trying to look into something for me regarding my fjord trip, even though it was not related to them.
Review 135:whether. It was great to sit in the kitchen watching small houses on the mountains!
Review 136:breakfast in hotel Terminus. They have no breakfast in hostel, but you can try a food till 10 a.m. in Terminus. (for 130 NOK). At first line braun sweet cheese!
Review 137:No complaints.
Review 138:Great Location. Walk-able distance from bus / Rail / Shopping. Place is clean. Good kitchen. Though I reached after 2300, staffs planned everything beforehand to make my check-in super easy. Definitely value for money.
