Reviews for Sumaq Machu Picchu Hotel

Review 1:The room and the beds were amazing. Excellent and friendly staff. Very good quality food and also a nice surprise for my froda birthday when a cale was brought at breakfast....

Review 2:Although the kitchen tried hard the food was not very good. Overcompensated on presentation not delivered on quality and taste. Had to return the alpaca carpaccio.

Review 3:No air conditioning in the room which meant opening the windows and getting eaten by mosquitoes. The worst there had even been apparently.

Review 4:Best hotel in the area, fantastic

Review 5:It's not worth us$ 400. Ok, the dinner is included. But was a big disappointment. The food is not good, not for that price. We ate much better in Cusco and cheaper. I definitively dont't recommend

Review 6:The room is good

Review 7:Walking along the unmade road in the dark from the railway station was a bit difficult as the surface was uneven

Review 8:The Hotel and rooms were beautifully decorated. The staff was excellent and the food was a very high quality

Review 9:The bed was not great, but still fine for one night.

Review 10:The staff was great! We were welcomed with tea and plantain chips. We had reserved bus and entrance tickets to Machu Picchu with them which they had all ready, so we were up at Machu Picchu within an hour of arriving! After we got back to the hotel we enjoyed the included tea time which had snacks - little sandwiches and cakes. Then we enjoyed our complimentary pisco sour during happy hour followed by the included dinner. Breakfast the next day was also great. For everything that was included, the cleanliness, and the location - this place was a great value.

Review 11:Bed covers too tight on the bed, no tea or coffee maker in the room. The promotion photos lead to a higher expection.... A bit over sold

Review 12:Staff were wonderful, loved the decor, the breakfast menu and dinner menu,

Review 13:We arranged a guide trough the hotel. The guide was perfect but it would have been a lot cheaper if we had arranged the tours and tickets to the Machu Picchu ourselves!

Review 14:The worst 5 stars hotel ever!! We booked a suite with a specialhydrobath and dvd and receive a regular room. Then they try to convinceus that our room is a suite and its describe wrong at Booing web siteOnly when a representative from booking talk to the hotel they admitthat the hotel is full and gave us 50% off

Review 15:The wifi was not very good. They were doing construction/remodeling throughout the hotel and that was distracting, especially while trying to take a recovery nap. Also, the second floor is just above the main road heading toward Machu Picchu. Buses and trucks going up and down this road are loud.

Review 16:The staff, breakfast, dinner, ceviche and pisco sour classes, tea time, and general modern/cultural feel of the entire hotel and restaurant.

Review 17:Lovely hotel in good location overlooking river & road to Machu Pichu. Staff were great arranging bus tickets & then saving seats in the bus so you don't have to line up. The bus stops right outside the hotel so very easy. On the way back from Machu Pichu we ask to be dropped of at the hotel, door to door service! Also easy having the dinner, bed & breakfast option. Don't miss the free Pisco Sours during happy hour!

Review 18:Not the greatest value for your money.

Review 19:Didn't feel like the services provided matched up to the price paid for this hotel. We paid almost $400/night and we only get 1 free bottle of water? I guess the dinner and breakfast were free too. There was a power outage in the morning when we were getting ready. We got a room that faced the water which was nice. We asked for our luggage to be transported to the train station and they must have been misunderstood, and they kept the luggage at the hotel. So the train was there, we were there but our luggage wasn't!! So we had to wait until they showed up. The hotel is not far from the hotel, thank goodness. Can ask the front desk to setup a bus pickup time to Machu Picchu. We setup a 7am pickup time but no bus stopped at our door until 7:30 am. You can also buy your bus tickets to Machu Picchu at the hotel. At least some of these costs should be included in the price I paid per night.

Review 20:Wern't really able to help us get to Machu Picchu early enough for sunrise at the site. Perhaps it was language difficulty

Review 21:Lovely place, great accommodations, generally helpful staff

Review 22:Service was excellent. The breakfast and dinner included were beyond expectations. View from the room of the river and mountains - fabulous! Wonderful option for pre and post Machupitchu.

Review 23:La conexion de internet no es muy buena en todos los lugares del hote.

Review 24:La atencion muy esmerada de todo el personal, la comida exquisita. La ubicacion y la recepacion en la estacion de tren fueron muy buenas.

Review 25:Finished the 4 day Inka Trail and came down to be greeted by staff in Sumaq with some refreshing ice tea and snack. Was personally escorted to the room. Right by the urumbamba River, the river sounds drowns out everything- which to me feels like I'm sleeping right next to mature but in luxury. Dinner at the restaurant was fabulous and all staff were super attentive. Looking forward to coming back here to stayz

Review 26:Friendly/helpful staff. Wonderful room with view to the mountain and the rushing Urubamba River. Delicious meals (2 sumptuous gourmet meals were included with our room). Great location at the edge of the town.

Review 27:The hotel would not honor my already-confirmed room change for a triple for our kids until I paid another $170.

Review 28:Balcony overlooking the raging Urubamba River was spectacular. Bus to Machu Picchu picks up and drops off right out front if you request it. Dinner was a special holiday meal-- low key but lovely.

Review 29:Nothing at all, everything was perfect,

Review 30:The Sumaq Hotel has a very personal touch to its service - on entry staff members know exactly who you are and maintain this kind personalised service throughout the stay. The meals are exquisite works of art and waking up hearing the rush of the Urumumba is an invigorating start to the day. I felt ill one evening and asked for honey, lemon and fresh ginger - which they didnt have at first. But it suddenly appeared, and it seems that there is very little that the hotel staff would not do for you. To Sumeira and Veronica thank you very much for the all the kindnesses shown. The spa was incredible as well, with the best massage I have ever had anywhere in the world!

Review 31:This was the most expensive booking we had during the whole trip and certainly the place was the most disappointing. They were renovating and banging away deep into the night. The restaurant was boarded off .....staff were pleasant (this is a constant we found all over Peru). After requesting a room change to be a bit farther away from the banging (and away from the ground floor) we got a higher room which at least had a view. I cannot imagine what the rooms with the back views look like. Must all be vey disappointing although maybe quieter as the frequency of trains going by at the back of the hotel is certainly less than the rushing of buses in the front of the hotel. Forget the half-board. We found great restaurants in town with better food. The food we had served to us at the hotel was consistently cold or just warm and lacked harmony regarding flavors.

Review 32:Location with the view of the river, breakfast, ..... attentive staff

Review 33:Hotel was in work renovation, so the noise close to bedroom was bad. Anyway they offered us an upgraded room. It was a correct solution.

Review 34:Drinks and food workshop.

Review 35:Wifi was a little slow, but we weren't there for the internet.

Review 36:The early morning bus pickup without waiting in line is the best part of this hotel.

Review 37:The staff was very helpful and nice. The location is good, but the hotel itself is old with some exterior touch up job. Our bathroom didn't seem to have been cleaned when we checked in and found hair all over the bath tub. For the price they charge, I think the place needs some serious upgrading.

Review 38:Wi-fi didn't work in our room and wasn't good even at the reception.

Review 39:Staff will do EVERYTHING to assist you. Restaurant was very good. Everything was excellent.

Review 40:We did not enjoy dinner. The room was noisy and the waiters seemed stressed and unhappy.

Review 41:Location and view were great. The room was beautiful and comfortable.

Review 42:nothing to mention

Review 43:Well appointed hotel with a calm, inviting atmosphere. Rooms are spacious and have everything you need for a great stay. Dinner is a wonderful experience as is the afternoon tea and welcome pisco sour. Great attention from staff and particularly appreciated the staff getting our places on the MP bus early in the morning. This is a great bonus! Overall it deserves it's high rating and is good value for the price tag

Review 44:No mosquito screens on sliding doors to balcony.

Review 45:Staff were very helpful in arranging bus tickets to Machu Picchu and bus pick up outside the hotel. Restaurant food was very good although a little expensive for Peru.

Review 46:We think that this hotel is too expensive for the entire room. The fire place in the room was not even working. The waiter of the restaurant was rude and not patient. ''Half board'' included was poor in food for the lunch. Very small portion for the price.

Review 47:Good breakfast.

Review 48:The furnishings and fitments are a bit out of the 1960's - but hey, this isn't Lima - it's half way up a mountain in a frontiertown that has more in common with Dodge City in the 1890's than sayVale Colorado

Review 49:I emailed them before arrival asking for a meet and greet at the railstation, and asking if they could find me a personal guide to MachuPicchu - all promptly and efficiently done. The dinner and breakfastwere included in my room rate and were surprisingly good. You can buycheaper food in Agua Calientes, but not to this standard

Review 50:Nothing - all good. I only gave a slightly lower score for 'value for money' but really this applies to the whole town.

Review 51:Location was great - room overlooking the river. The food was very good - particularly the dinner. The service for arrangement to get to MP was excellent - they arranged shuttle bus tickets the night before, and (even better) they make arrangements for the shuttle bus to pick us up at the hotel (no queuing - perfect!).

Review 52:We booked the Sumaq to enable us to get up early and get to Machu Picchu for dawn, and because it offered a bit of comfort in our tour of Peru, with a free cooking demonstration included. The Sumaq turned out to give us all this and more! It was fantastic, the staff were really helpful and even bought us a plate of complimentary sweets to the room. The cooking demonstration of ceviche and pisco sour was great, really interesting and we got to eat and drink them both afterwards. The evening meal was lovely and the best surprise of all was that we could book the time of our bus up to Machu Picchu and the staff got the tickets and saved our seats on the bus which stopped at the hotel on the way. This saved us at least an hour and a half of queueing!! What a brilliant service.

Review 53:Slow wifi, but that's a 1st world problem.

Review 54:Staff met us on arrival at the station, took our luggage and escorted us to the hotel where a cold drink and snacks were served. We were very impressed that on the morning we went to machu pichu a staff member went down to the bus stop and stood in line for a bus for our group of 6, then the bus stopped outside the hotel door. Upon arrival back from machu pichu we had a couple of hours so the staff allowed us to use the showers and change for our long journey back to Cusco. Ceviche is the best in Peru!

Review 55:-Helpful and professional staff -Best food of our trip -Location -Many little "touches" that made the stay special -Decent value due to inclusion of 3 course dinner, snacks, and breakfast

Review 56:There were a few communication issues leading up to the visit: for example, we were told we could arrange guides and spa treatments on arrival and this proved difficult to impossible.

Review 57:Welcoming staff, excellent accommodation.

Review 58:just perfect!

Review 59:Wifi was a little slow, but not terrible

Review 60:The attention to detail was great

Review 61:Staff are very attentive plus excellent service

Review 62:The facilities could use some updating.

Review 63:Friendly @ helpful staff. Location

Review 64:just not a 4 or 5 star property at the price very nice staff ok substitute if cannot go to Sanctuary- a world of difference

Review 65:The location was perfect and the staff were friendly and helpful.

Review 66:In the best part of Aguas Caliente by a raging river! Awesome view and excellent service.

Review 67:Location and facilities

Review 68:Food was delicious and the staff went over and above to make you comfortable.

Review 69:Friendly staff.

Review 70:Nothing

Review 71:Everything

Review 72:Too many pillows on the bed - but then again, is this really bad?

Review 73:Excellent cuisine! Wished I could have eaten everything from the menu.

Review 74:Paying for coffee

Review 75:The cooking class and pisco sour lesson was fun.

Review 76:Excellent service!

Review 77:slooow wifi

Review 78:Everything was great, helpful staff, nice big room

Review 79:We loved the welcome juice and dinner that was included in the price. We had a lovely view from our room as well.

Review 80:Staff was over the top helpful. Food was gourmet. Location was the best.

Review 81:Excellent hotel. Great staff and comfortable room. Our stay also includes 3 course dinner and cooking class which we enjoyed very much. It's also one of the stop for the bus to go up Machu Picchu, so they will arrange the pick up for you right in front of the hotel, so you can skip the line!

Review 82:They want to charge a lot of money for the use of the hot tub. I don't mind paying a reasonable price for use of these facilities, but $40 is a bit too much to sit in the hot tub for 15 minutes.

Review 83:Good location and the staff was friendly. They also accommodated a change in dates of our stay with no penalty or issues what so ever. Which frankly was refreshing as they could have made a stink about the issue as my reservation indicated no changes were allowed.

Review 84:Ok - cheap it is not... But very well worth the price.

Review 85:Friendly, efficient staff, right from the moment of picking us up at the train. Excellent cuisine. The short bartending and cooking class a very nice plus. Comfort of rooms, WiFi

Review 86:Never again - i understand, that they have in Peru not the same standard as in europe/us eg. But for "5" star hotel and a junior suite, I expect a cleaned bathroom. What I get? Not cleaned main-mirror, many hairs on floor and bath tub ( clearly visible ) , so HORRIBLE And on top, I get a water-bottle, opened and half drunken.

Review 87:Great view on urubamba-river.

Review 88:Bed seemed quite old - not a comfortable night's sleep.

Review 89:The staff were extremely attentive - couldn't do enough for us. They organised Machu Picchu bus tickets and even got the bus to stop out front of the hotel - saved us waiting in the line. The half board dinner option was reasonably good. Breakfast was excellent - lots of choices.

Review 90:The only negative thing I can think of is that the lighting was a little bright and not intimate in the dining room in the evening. Other than that, everything was perfect.

Review 91:The location, common areas and rooms are very nice. The hotel offers activities to the guest like local site seeing tours, cooking classes, tea time and happy hour. The dining is incredible and the staff very helpful and attentive. The view of the river and mountains from our room was spectacular. Very quiet location but still an easy walk to view nature or to go into the town. The tour guide that they put us in touch with gave us an amazing tour of Machu Pichu as well as bird watching. The staff met us at the train station to transport are luggage and did the same when we departed. We were very glad to have chosen to stay at Sumaq.

Review 92:The staff was extremely helpful and kind. The hotel is clean and comfortable. The best value for your money if you are considering staying a night in Machu Picchu. The staff was very accommodating and helpful and answered our many questions. The included dinner was the best we've had in Peru. The traditional ceviche, beef carpaccio, trout and lamb were remarkable. I would recommend this property to anyone wishing to stay in Machu Picchu.

Review 93:There was nothing we didn't like about the Sumaq Hotel.

Review 94:We loved everything about the Sumaq Hotel. The warm welcome and ease of checkin. The very clean, large, beautifully decorated rooms. The gourmet dinner and breakfast buffet. The great staff. Our stay was perfect.

Review 95:The restaurant didn't have a lot of good vegetarian food. They had options but not a lot of flavor. The massages were not good, would have been a perfect stay if we had amazing massages after our long hikes.

Review 96:Lunch and Dinner included, we didn't know that so it was a wonderful surprise! Location was a very short walk from the town so it was nice to be so close without being in the center. The food and ceviche were great!

Review 97:This is not a 5-star hotel. Period. The rooms are mediocre, food is not what you'd expect at a 5-star hotel, overall facilities are just ok. At $550 per night (for a "junior suite", which pretty much anywhere else in the world would qualify for a double room), this is a very over-priced hotel; even considering that breakfast and dinner are included in the rate. My wife had I had a massage at the hotel's spa - not something I would recommend to anyone - it was rushed and poorly done. Considering the prices that this hotel charges and, in general, the amount of money that flows into this town daily, from bus tickets, rail tickets, food, hotels, etc., you would at least expect that the road in front of the hotel would be paved (instead of walking on dirt and being covered with a cloud of dust every time a bus passes by). Machu Picchu site is phenomenal, out of this world, absolutely worth seeing, but everything else is way over-priced for the kind of service that is provided and the facilities available.

Review 98:Staff is extremely nice and looks for ways to help and improve our overall experience.

Review 99:Nothing whatsoever!!

Review 100:The staff was exceptionally helpful. At 2:15 pm, we discovered that we had accidentally left a checked backpack at the MP storage area and they arranged for a staff member to bring it 30 minutes down the mountain and deliver it to us in time to make our train back to Cuzco at 4pm. Dinner was included and surprisingly phenomenal...Better than any 5 star restaurant we have enjoyed in Manhatten!! You must try the fresh trout cerviche. Freshest fish I have ever had anywhere. Desserts were hand-crafted artworks. I had a wonderful homemade rum raison rice pudding that came with a beautiful hand-spun clear sugar sculpture on top. Fish and not beef is the local specialty. You simply cannot go wrong with any of the fresh fish choices.

Review 101:nothing was possible to dislike, it was perfect

Review 102:this was the best hotel i have ever stayed at I loved how they gave us a welcome drink, and then chcolates to our room, and were very friendly wonderful dinner, too

Review 103:They bought my extra tickets to MachuPicchu and bus tickets for us.. The bus stopped in front of the hotel.. And when we came back the hotel offered shower service although we've checked out already.

Review 104:Sorry but this is NOT a 5 star hotel by any stretch of the imagination. Just because it is the best of a bad bunch does not make it 5 star. This hotel would be lucky to score a 3 star rating elsewhere!!! As for value for money.....at $430....it was the worst hotel by far!

Review 105:Location

Review 106:* Spa not included with the price of your room * River is loud but not a sound that bothers me personally.

Review 107:* Staff very attentive * Spacious rooms * Spectacular view of the river * Diner fantastic - works out cheaper to book half board.

Review 108:1.) The massage I had at the spa was fair. The therapist didn't accommodate my requests for work on specific areas and just did her routine massage. 2.) The standard room and Junior suite did not have any work surface or chair to write postcards or work on a laptop. 3.) The water from the faucet was not very clear. The bath water looked murky and brown, sort of like the river water. 4.) The prices for alcoholic drinks seemed way overpriced, even for a touristy hotel.

Review 109:Restaurant, bar, hotel lobby -- all top notch! We all loved the food.

Review 110:The coffee was a little late in the morning, arriving quite some timeafter breakfast started and too late for us to enjoy thatmorning.....but that is a very small annoyance.

Review 111:Without doubt, visiting Machu Picchu is an incredible experience and sowhen I booked this trip, the most important aspect of our trip to makeperfect, was the full day we'd be at the site. If you were to lookat the best postcard view of Machu Picchu, it would probably be amorning shot where the sun is on the right side and on the face ofHuayna Picchu. I wanted to be at the site at dawn and so the only way toaccomplish that was to stay the night in Aguas Calientes and to pre-arrange the day at the site, the day before. We took the train fromCusco to Machu Picchu, a half day trip and were greeted at the trainstation by the staff from the hotel, who arranged porters for what fewbags we brought with us on the train and explained the amenities of thehotel and our arrangements to visit the site the next day. While webooked in to the hotel, the staff also made arrangements to purchase ourentrance tickets and to reserve a space on a specific early morning busdeparture, to ensure we were there for sunrise. The hotel is the closesthotel to the base of the mountain, with stunning views of the valley andthe river running just in front of the hotel property. Our packageincluded buffet breakfast and a la cart dinner, an appetiser, maincourse and desert with wine or alcoholic drinks separate. The wine wasquite good and reasonably priced. The dinners were fantastic! Some ofthe best meals we enjoyed in all our time in the country, especially theceviche appetiser. Our first night at the hotel included a welcome piscosour in the bar before dinner. Both our room and the bar are on the 3rdfloor looking over the river. The restaurant is one floor down from thebar on the 2nd floor. The internet Wi-Fi connection was good throughoutthe hotel. The next morning went off perfectly, with a call from thedesk when the bus was coming and a staff member actually in the busholding on to our reserved seats.

Review 112:nothing negative to say

Review 113:Food was excellent. The Pisco Sour and Ceviche course was great fun. They were excellent at organising our tickets and guide for Machu Picchu.

Review 114:- it's not 5 star as claimed - noise from busses in front of hotel between 5 am and 6 pm . - package tourist guide uses lobby for meeting

Review 115:-Proximity to machu picchu bus and service by hotel staff to buy tickets. - welcoming at train station - staff is friendly and hotel is clean.

Review 116:excellent and well trained staff that received us at the train station and dedicated time to tell a bit about the history, etc. Very comfort and clean.

Review 117:Pricey for what you get, but it is high comfort right near Machu Picchu

Review 118:Excellent staff (except restaurant servers a little sleepy) very comfortable hotel, superb restaurant food

Review 119:The food is average. Room is cold. If you know luxury this is not it. Staff not very helpful or switched on: asked for a shirt to be washed at 6pm and ready for 5am next day and was told the laundry was closed and it was not possible. Good hotel but overpriced for what it is.

Review 120:The tax I had to pay because a Peruvian was staying in my room. It was my room not hers I was paying for it. So I shouldn't have to pay a tax.

Review 121:The staff, the room, the food

Review 122:Wonderful and very helpful staff..luxurious accommodations in a beautiful natural and remote location. Our room opened to spectacular views by a rushing river at the foot of the most incredible Machu Picchu. Simply unforgettable.
