Reviews for Anker Hostel
Review 1:The staff were fantastic, very patient and helped in every way they could. The location is perfect, ten minutes walk to the city centre. The bed was comfortable and the room was warm.
Review 2:Rooms were not necessarily clean, did not feel it was a great area for a solo female traveller to be walking alone.
Review 3:I had booked a mixed dorm however when i arrived staff offered for a female dorm. Beds were also comfy.
Review 4:Great hostel. We had a private room- very large room with a kitchenette. Very friendly and helpful staff. Only things I would recommend is to bring your own towels as you are charged for the rent of towels. Great location, right in the centre; a 5 min walk from the metro. Great if you want to spend your time outside exploring Oslo and the surrounding forest.
Review 5:The trams outside were a little loud but bearable - you noticed them if you were awake but could sleep through them easily enough.
Review 6:The heated bathroom floor was amazing.
Review 7:Great location. It was nice to have a fridge in the room and the shower was really good. Cheap bar in the hostel and supermarket just around the corner and lots of bars close.
Review 8:Staff were friendly and helpful, the place was in a good location with great public transport. Beds are comfy. Obviously pretty basic rooms, but when you're paying so little, it's totally worth it.
Review 9:I didn't liked that we sleep 2 nights with a homeless man in the room, with a very bad smell and snoring very loud It's recommended to select people, you don't put a homeless with a clean person in the same room. It's not so complicated.
Review 10:Clean hostel, the sheets - good (hotel) quality Good location
Review 11:Our first room had bedbugs. Unfortunately, we've only discovered them around 11PM after me and my wife were bitten several times. We managed to catch a few species (see photo). The staff was kind enough to offer us a free laundry service for all our washable things (alas, no detergent provided, so everything ended up pretty smelly, but hey, it was free) and a free freezing service for everything else, so we neatly ended up without most of our belongings for the next 40 hours. So after a long and tiresome day (flight was @7AM), at 11PM, with a sleepy 5-year old kid, we were moving rooms, emptying our bags, taking things to the laundry and the freezer (both of which were conveniently located outside of the hotel), waiting for the laundry to finish (12AM) and putting the laundry into the dryer. That wasn't pleasant.
Review 12:Breakfasts are standard, but pretty good. You get a cheap free backpack (which you can then keep, if you're luckier than us and it lasts for you) if you discover bedbugs in your room.
Review 13:The levels of cleanliness weren't great; we had to rent the kitchen equipment, which was inconvenient/annoying once/twice a day; the reception has been renovated more recently than the rooms, so it's deceptive when walking in!
Review 14:We got given a large dormitory (for two of us) and given free towels and bedding for the "inconvenience" - which it wasn't, but it was great! Free hot water in reception was great because we brought our own coffee.
Review 15:Wifi almost doesn't work at the room, you need to go down to the ground hall if you really need that.
Review 16:I spent two nights there for Christmas. The hostel is not far from the train station and has some tram and bus stations nearby. The equipment inside is nice, I lived in a mix4 room, it has bathroom and kitchen. The beer at its bar is much cheaper. Friendly and helpful staff especially Jensen.
Review 17:Staff taking personal calls and ignoring guest's stood in front of them very unhelpful apart from the night shift guy who was covering from the hotel next door.
Review 18:Unclean staff indifference and homeless people sleeping in the lounge area so unable to sit with other guests
Review 19:The staff were very helpful. He help me print out my ticket for free :). They have a kitchen inside the double bedroom, and kitchen utensils on the receptionist, very useful.
Review 20:Internet was very slow and got disconnected several times. Did not work half of the stay
Review 21:Got upgraded to a hotel room. Clean and quiet, good breakfast at a reasonable price
Review 22:Location is not as good as you may have thought. It took us like 15 mins of walking from the central station. Staffs are unhelpful. The bathroom is not good.
Review 23:It is pretty cheap. If you are planning for a budget travel and not staying in the hostel for a long time, you might want to give it a try.
Review 24:No luggage storage facility within the room and bed was rather uncomfortable. Also, they charge extra for linens which you must use on the bed - either your own, or rented from the hostel. That's sneaky charging in my opinion.
Review 25:Location was excellent - close to public transport n the town.
Review 26:1. The elevator looked dangerous. 2. The loundary room is outside of the hostel and cost 60 NOK.
Review 27:We booked two beds room but they gave us 6 beds room. It was very big for two people so I think we are lucky.
Review 28:Staff was very rude. They don't even look at you or pay attention if you are waiting for your turn. I wanted to get in from main entrance that is right in front of reception. Door was locked and two idiots kept staring at me whole I was struggling to get in. I have to wait until another person cane out. That is the most stupid attitude I have ever seen ftom a hotel staff.
Review 29:Hostel is centrally located. All tourist attractions are at walking distance. Train and Bus Stations are 15 minutes walk.
Review 30:Renting the kitchen supply. It would be better to rent the kitchen supply for days instead of hours.
Review 31:Heated bathroom floor. Warm staff. We travelled with 6 people but got an 8 bedroom all for ourselves which was awesome.
Review 32:They don't give a microwave or kettle to guests. People were strugling to heat up a soup or a bowl of meal. Management doesn't care to provide the basics (?)
Review 33:Good location in downtown, Friendly staff always helpful, Tidy room regularly cleaned, Comfortable bed.
Review 34:a little far away from city centre (city hall and pier) mix-gender room, bad guys may be in your room ensuite bathroom is not comfortable without good facilities when i check in, cannot paid by card - unhappy about that
Review 35:close to train central station
Review 36:First thing I hated was to pay for bed sheets, its the first time this happens to me, after all money we paid for the room then we have to add 10€ for taking the bed sheets.... I always had the bed already prepared and didn't pay any extra. Then, the worse thing for me are noises. And this hostel has a problems with the pipes. I was in second floor and every time someone from the upper floors was having a shower or flushing the toilet or using the sink, I could hear EVERYTHING! the water dropping down like if I was using the bathroom, and some people have showers later at night or very early in the morning so either one way or another you can't sleep properly. Also, we didn't have double bed even though we asked for it. One of the single bed was fine but the other one.... No way I was sleeping there, very used and thing, after two hours of sleeping I didn't feel one part of my body owing to it was lying down in the wood basically. Also, the recepelcionists, any of them, were very friendly. Not a simple hello when you enter the hostel, even looking at you.
Review 37:We liked the location and the space in the room where there were a big table, smaller table, little kitchen with small fridge and a huge wardrobe.
Review 38:There was a non optional bed linen change that essentially made the hostel more expensive than it appears on booking.com. Then as we arrived late at night, had to make our beds in the dark as there's no lighting for the individual bunks.
Review 39:Staff were very friendly and always wiling to answer any queries. Location was perfect. Plenty of bus and trams to take you to anywhere in Oslo, right in front of hostel.
Review 40:No basic dishes in the room,i was 15 days there, it was very annoying for me to go every morning to take cups and plates. Big disadvantage there are no strict female rooms.
Review 41:The room was very clean and tidy, location is advantage( center of Oslo), staff is very nice and helpfull...
Review 42:Almost nothing.
Review 43:The staff is very helpful and always smiling. The location is just 1 km to the Main Train Station. There is kitchen in the room and you can borrow all the dishes for a deposit of 10 euro. There is many markets around the hostel.
Review 44:Paying extra for sheets. Just include it in the price. No plug points near the beds. Alcohol from outside only allowed in the dorm but not in any common area.
Review 45:Staff...they are not pleasant. They are helpless, and look like a robot...programmed to do only the basic things. Just remind you are hosting people, not product.
Review 46:Location
Review 47:no hairdryer, no towels. i wasn't even asked for towels. not a single room With 2 beds, like i booked either
Review 48:the beds were good. and it was nice and quiet
Review 49:No staff seen ever. Check in was text to me and luckily i had coverage in another country before we arrived otherwise would not have known. Linen also was unable time rented as there was no one around.
Review 50:Facilities were more than adequate for a nights stay
Review 51:We had to pay for everything: bed sheets, towels, kitchen stuff...
Review 52:Bathrooms were private. It was near the city center. We had a private kitchen in every room.
Review 53:There was no soap in the bathroom of our room. We asked the housekeeper for soap and were told to go buy some from the store. Considering they emphasis how unsanitary it is to not use bed sheets I would argue it's more unsanitary to not have soap in your bathroom.
Review 54:Big room. Beds were comfortable. Staff was very friendly.
Review 55:Anker Hostel is in a terrible area. I would not take children here again. We saw people with syringes making drug deals. The area is completely different to the city area where we stayed last time we were in Oslo on Kongens which was very nice. This was the most expensive hostel that we have ever stayed in in Norway and it was in the worst location and had the worst facilities and no breakfast. Our 'family room' (just a dorm room) had a kitchen but no cutlery, crokery or cooking equipment. You had to give a NOK100 deposit to reception to borrow a box of cooking and eating equipment, but had to return it within 3 hours or you lost the deposit. This meant we constantly had to go up and down to reception even to make a cup of tea. Most of the equipment in the box was dirty.
Review 56:It was possible to walk to Anker Hostel from Oslo main train station.
Review 57:Lack of kitchen facilities- it was quite annoying to have to rent them out every time, especially when they only contained the bare minimum. Cleanliness could have been worse but wasn't amazing. There was no hand soap or bin supplied in the bathroom. Our padlock didn't fit the lockers but we couldn't buy one from reception either as they didn't have any left so we were offered to use the luggage storage that you have to pay for. Atmosphere wasn't great but the location was!
Review 58:The location
Review 59:The bathroom was durty like they didn't clean up 3 or 4 days. But room was clearn enough to stay and sleep. I suggest you to take slippers. It will be comfortable to use bathroom.
Review 60:Hostel is really close to Oslo Central Station. For about 10-15 minutes by walk and by tram only 3 or 5.Aslo easy to take a tram to see around the city. Guys in the reception were very friendly and ready to help.
Review 61:Rooms do look like hospital rooms! Lack of carpet meant you could hear footsteps from the people above, but apart from this it was great!
Review 62:Great location - about 10 mins walk from Central Station. Lots of lovely bars, shops and restaurants around. Amazing shower, sparse rooms, but very spacious and with comfy beds. (Bring your own linen or pay extra on arrival!) Nice atmosphere in reception and cheapest beer by far!! Very helpful and friendly staff too! It felt very secure.
Review 63:Toilets should be cleaned more often or cleaning equipment should be borrowed by guests, and there are no bins for selective waste.
Review 64:The hostel is very close to the city center, staff is kind, own bathroom and kitchen corner are in the rooms.
Review 65:The hallways were a little dirty. No breakfast is included. You have to pay for additional bed linen.
Review 66:The location is perfect, all staff and fellow travellers were great and helpful! Dorms are basic, but beds are comfortable.
Review 67:Staff is not friendly neither helpful. If you don't have bed linen, you must pay expensive for one. They don't allow you use sleeping bag. There is no breakfast, wifi works badly and the kitchen is in the room. That is super inconvenient because everything is going to smell food after prepare your meal. There is no microwave oven. Cutlery and other stuff are always dirty - you should wash them.
Review 68:Location is quite convenient - walking distance from the train station.
Review 69:All the bad reviews are spot on. I have stayed in hundreds of hostels around the world and this is by far one of the worst - and I can put up with most things in hostel. No kitchen, no common room and filthy rooms. My ensuite bathroom didn't look like it had been cleaned in weeks. Empty shampoo bottles and rubbish everywhere, and five random toothbrushes (even though there was only two people staying in the room when I arrived). It was pretty gross. You can cook on a small stovetop in the rooms but you have to hire a 'cooking set' as there's no cutlery or crockery in the rooms. I chose not to cook as I think cooking where people sleep and have all their clothes is very inconsiderate (though I understand people need to self-cater in such an expensive city and so this is a major problem with the hostel rather than the fault of guests). I had some pasta I just wanted to heat up - I didn't require any utensils or cutlery, just a microwave - but was rudely told by a guy at reception that my only option was to hire the cooking set and cook in the room. I ate it cold. I still chose this hostel, having read all the bad reviews and also heard verbal bad reviews, as I was literally only in Oslo to sleep before a flight and it was the cheapest place in town. I put my earplugs in, didn't have a shower and just left as soon as I could. Definitely not somewhere to stay for more than a night.
Review 70:The location was decent enough for proximity to the train station. You could store your luggage after checkout. That's about it.
Review 71:Sleeping in a corridor of a school trip isn't always ideal when on a business trip with early nights and mornings.
Review 72:Everything up need for basic living, great staff and perfect location!
Review 73:I just didn't feel safe. it is not a youth hostel and there were several older men hanging around the common area during the day. Once i was in my room, there was surprisingly more young people staying in there then i thought. not a great atmosphere.
Review 74:Only down side would be the noise from other guests, but no-one can predict that
Review 75:Considering the price of other hotels/hostels in Oslo, I thought this was very good value for money. We paid around £40 per night for two in a private twin room which had private bathroom and kitchen facilities. Reception is 24 hours, which was great as our flight didn't land til 11pm. Staff were friendly and helpful. Coffee machine downstairs has free hot water so take your own tea bags and just buy milk from the corner shop (our room had a fridge) Only about a 10-15 min walk to bus station, very convenient
Review 76:- beds are quite dirty (fresh bedlinen don´t make a better feeling) - stange area/people arround the hostel - kitchen unit in the room (if someone cook fish)
Review 77:- quite central - breakfast very good price!! - nice staff - Wireless works at the room - cheapest in Oslo
Review 78:-Linen and towel are not included in the rate shown in the website. -Wifi signal is so bad. You need to be around the reception to access the internet. -There are two drunk men trying to break down the door at 6 am. Fortunately, the door is so strong. There's no security to manage the situation. For me and my friends, living here is not safe.
Review 79:Thank god! The door is so strong!
Review 80:The place is located in a marginal area of the city. A lot of poverty and precarious immigration around. The kitchen is inside the rooms, which makes it very difficult to cook without disturbing the rest. Only one shower/WC for 8 people (complicated in the mornings). There's no common space apart from a couple of sofas at the reception. The place is dirty and uncomfortable in general.
Review 81:Members of the staff are nice (most of them)
Review 82:This was not a good hostel. Shared room was very dirty and it had an awful smell in the room. Only spent 1,5h there. Toilet in reception was occupied by a junkie and the two Norwegian security guards did nothing to force him out. Blood and toilet paper on the floor, really not hygienic at all. The receptionst told me that you can not buy beer after 01.30, however, I came back to the hostel around 3:00am and the receptionist sold a beer to an already drunk guest who roamed around in the reception around 03:30, not at all serious or respecting the laws. Low cost, but not worth the stay.
Review 83:The guy who checked us in was terrible! We got there in the middle of the night (as we asked in our reservation) and had to wait for an hour until the guy worked his way in their system to check us in, aditionally, bed linen and towels were not included in the price.
Review 84:Less expensive than most places we found in this area, clean and tidy
Review 85:-Private room was actually vacant dorm (i.e. too many extra beds, all singles) -Location a bit removed, close enough to major sights with decent walking -Upstairs and hallways VERY noisy
Review 86:-Kitchen en suite -Bathroom en suite -Great wifi -Cheap breakfast -24 hour reception -Close to Grunerlokka
Review 87:The rooms were not really clean (especially bathrooms) and in the shared dorms people checked in or out in the middle of the night so that it was impossible to sleep. Furthermore I didn't feel comfortable in being the only woman put in a room with 6 men.
Review 88:The hostel was close to thecity center and most of the things were reachable in walk distance.
Review 89:The hall was not very tidy, the bathroom as well.
Review 90:I liked the tidiness of the room, the kindness of the staff and the fact I could put my luggage in a safe place after check-out.
Review 91:- hostel charge basiclly for everything - even security boxes or coffe/tea
Review 92:- clean room with independent bathroom - kitchen in the room! - really nice common area
Review 93:You have to pay for the bed linen, it's not included in the room tariff.
Review 94:Tidy room, fair internet access and good location near bus stop and tram station.
Review 95:A bit noisy and have to pay the extra fee for the sheets and pillow cover , so the accomdantion fee is not worthy.
Review 96:Location is great, in the city centre, 10mins walking to train strain station.
Review 97:No bins in the room which has a mini kitchenette, no social area apart from some seats in the reception. Hostel is quite industrial looking and cold, not very nice.
Review 98:Clean fresh seats and mixed rooms.
Review 99:The bathroom gets extremely hot when you take a shower.
Review 100:The staff was very nice and helpful. There was a fridge and a cooking space in the room which was very convenient. The location is very central, you can get everywhere very easily.
Review 101:Put in dorm with 6 friends who ran riot, smoking in room, extremely noisy all night and stealing from other guests. Little done by hostel staff to stop them.
Review 102:Communial area bright and very social. Dorm pleasant enough, once disruptive groups of guest left
Review 103:Pillows & mattress
Review 104:Excellent location and really cheap accommodation. We had 4 bunk beds for 5 of us and a shower room plus kitchen. All clean. Pillow dreadful - should have taken my own and mattress basic. Quiet, clean and cheap (£80 for us all). Did the job for our stop over in Oslo.
Review 105:Last 500 meters of the way to the hostel is not really safe at night, In general I didnt like the fact about Norway that I always have to buy the towel and linen, the hotel is just beside the main road so if you are not above floor 3, you might be disturbed with the noise.
Review 106:Not far from the train station - 1 km. 24 hour checkin, The shower/toilet was clean, Room dimension was good.
Review 107:The lobby is always packed with students and young travelers. You have to pay extra for towels and bed sheets. The bathroom doesn't have any toiletries so bring yours.
Review 108:This is a great deal when visiting an expensive city like Oslo. The location is 10 min walk from the central station or 5 min by tram which stops in from of the hostel. The staff was helpful, there is baggage storeroom which can be opened only by the receptionist. The room is spacious, basic in furniture and clean with clean basic toilet. Bring your toiletries with you. There are many cheaper restaurants around the hostel and behind it. Good place to stay at for basic needs.
Review 109:From the station, by foot it takes nearly 18 minutes
Review 110:Comfort, Value for Money, Customer Friendly Service, Cleanliness, Locker Facility, Wi-Fi, Excellent Breakfast
Review 111:We were replaced to the Anker Hotel, instead Hostel and I don´t know why. Anyway, I am not complining: it was really good; very friendly and helpful personal (they even could indicate us a nice metal pub!!); impressive variety for the breakfast, which was almost like a lunch! The Hotel is central, so we could see most of the attractions by foot. In general very clean and confortable bed! Actually, we have nothing to complain about. Totally recomment it.
Review 112:The room is not clean. There was no bed even though I reserved. I said to the receptionist about that, he prepared a cheap extra bed. And he left it in a reception area like nothing was wrong. I carried it myself.
Review 113:Strong shower
Review 114:In my room, it didn't have enough sockets for 8 people to charge their phones. We need more.
Review 115:The good thing was that it's possible to cook in each room. And location was also perfect and close to Oslo central station. That's very convenient when you get around the city.
Review 116:The staff could be be happier and more helpful. I bought a stay at a room with 4 beds, but there was 6 beds in the room, making it a bit crowded.
Review 117:The lobby was very nice, with a small bar and lots of sofas, making it easy to meet new people. Also, it was cheap.
Review 118:Charged for all extras and could only keep kitchen utensils for a max of three hours before having to return them. Also no lockers in room.
Review 119:good transport links and close to centre
Review 120:Somewhat rude people in the dorms, drunk and inconciderate. 4 bed rooms much better just for +30-40 kr a night. Tried 2 dorms and 2 4-people rooms. Small reception, usually too crowded.
Review 121:The location, the price, nice and helpful employees (with the usual exception)
Review 122:Depending where you are, depends if the Wifi will work good or not, seriously. I had one room one night and then another the next and thefirst room had bad reception but the next had good reception. It can getpretty crowded in the front lobby, like insane croweded as people waitfor their rooms to get ready. A lot of back packers so they have twostorage faciliteis that you can keep your hiking backpack as you waitfor your room. The staff was kind. The breakfast was the best thing ofthe hostel because it was probably the cheapest breakfast you will findin all of Norway, No joke and it is a buffet, woot woot. Location couldbe better, you will have to walk a distance to get to main attractionsbut the road the hostel is on has a lot of stores like kiwi and fastfood restaurants. One thing I hated was people smoking right out sidethe door, the smoke flew into the lobby and made for a bad environmentfor the non smokers.
Review 123:Not a big thing but they should look at providing the basic toiletries at least in case if someone forgets to bring their own.
Review 124:Super friendly and helpful staff who knows the Oslo downtown area really well. People I shared the room with were very nice as well. WiFi service was good and easy to connect to. Location was excellent - very close to the transport links and Karl Johans shopping street. The Royal palace and other attractions are just at a walking distance from Anker hostel which is definitely a great plus.
Review 125:They charge for towels and sheets (although they prohibit the use of sleepongbags..). The ones they gave to me had some nasty stains. The hallway smelled disgusting and the shower had no barrier on the floor. However, I knew I was going to a cheap hostel, so I was expecting this. It was OK for me.
Review 126:The best thing was the location. Walkable distance from the central station and main attractions for a fair price. We booked a private room and they gave us a four bed room with a kitchenet and table, so we had a lot of space. Storage room was provided for free.
Review 127:excellent place for budget stay, very clean & good spread of breakfast, centrally located & easily accessible from all major areas of the city.
Review 128:I've stayed in many hostels and this is like the managers have taken all the best ideas and applied them. Very well organised, great transport links, walking distance to centre, helpful staff and very clean.
Review 129:I ask for twin room and i was offered a 12 beds room. On top of additional charges for beddings and towels
Review 130:It was a hidden charge for beddings and towels. For person. 50 for beddings and 40 for towels. I found this unacceptable.
Review 131:the wifi is not so good, most time can't get connected in the room, and sometime was not connected in the reception as well
Review 132:The room is very nice, so as the bed
Review 133:This place was a chaos. The room was dirty, the wifi was useless. Untidy people, mess everywhere. Absolutely not like on the pictures of the booking site. Never again want to go there.... bad bad bad bad experience.
Review 134:Nothing
Review 135:Too expensive and we were forced to pay extra for linen and pillow cover and had to arrange bed myself. I haven't experienced this anywhere in Europe. The receptionist didn't mind they have a guest in front of him with questions and was chatting with fellow-receptionist and doing some other jobs. Beds are too close to walk in between. Bed is not numbered and had to ask other roommates before choosing one.
Review 136:Walking distance from Main Railway station, still little bit far. Bathroom was clean. wifi connected without password. No curfew.
The Fine Print
Please note that bedding and towels are not included in room rates but can be rented at the hostel. Sleeping bags are not permitted at Anker Hostel.
