Reviews for Hotel Astoria
Review 1:The restaurant staff were on the surlly side and the food wasn't much better. Best eat out at one of dozens of local restaurants.
Review 2:The location and view was terrific, the rooms were comfortable, the front desk staff were very helpful. Parking very convieient.
Review 3:Terrible food and we stayed in a suite with mold all around in the bath. The hotel we feel is not up to 4 star quality that we have experiencedwhen we have traveled all over Italy.
Review 4:Breakfast somewhat disappointing in choice and quality compared with four other North Italian hotels on same trip. Public areas a little tired and fairly limited. Alas this hotel feels like a poor relation to its grander immediate neighbours on either side. Other key disappointment was wifi didn't work - reception explained how to access it but never managed to get connected in either the room or breakfast room - on phone or laptop. Overall more 3 star than 4 star
Review 5:Excellent lakeside location close to main shops and restaurants of Stresa. Bedroom fine with comfortable bed, good storage, effective air conditioning and BBC on the TV! Nice balcony but no shade. Bathroom disappointing due to horrible shower curtain and small cubicle, and very thin waffle towels.
Review 6:Lack of information in the rooms.
Review 7:Junior suite had great views over the lake and was well furnished and maintained. Hotel is located within walking distance of the restaurants and shops in central Stresa.
Review 8:Majority of staff impersonal, tired and dated bathroom, pool area and roof terrace require attention. Breakfast was only average, wi-fi in room poor.
Review 9:Excellent location on lakeside promenade and for accessibility to main town and ferry terminal. Has lovely front garden, spectacular views of lake and comfortable public rooms. Hotel was clean and well decorated.
Review 10:No lift to 2nd floor room for pregnat wife / toddler Ants in room Shutters did not open properly
Review 11:Location Premier league in the Bar Staff - attitude and attentiveness (and Itialian)
Review 12:The swimming pool and its surrounds not very appealing , decor tired , pool not very well maintained. The toaster at breakfast did not work , all week.
Review 13:The situation on the lake , central to Stresa and promenade . Stunning views of Borromean isles. Junior suite was very spacious .
Review 14:Arrived at 8.15pm on first night to learn they had double booked us. Offered us rooms in the annex, which were not acceptable, so booked us in the 5* Borromees Hotel. Astoria restaurant closed for evening, Borromees restaurant full and heavy rain outside meant room service in very expensive Borrommes (E16 for a portion of soggy chips). Had to negotiate hard with Astoria to get contribution towards the bill - they agreed. All very good otherwise.
Review 15:Great location - lake front and under 10 minute walk to central square, with good facilities - our car and bikes in underground car park. manager and staff informative about the area.
Review 16:The bed in our room was extremely hard. The staff in the check-in counter, had little interest in the customer, more interested in chatter with each other.
Review 17:Location. The staff (except those in the check) was really nice and gave a good service.
Review 18:The rooms are in need of renovation. Old and tired, wallpaper peeling off the wall in the single room.
Review 19:Rooms overlooking the lake have small balconies, perfect for enjoying the wonderful view. Television has English channels, a change from endless news. Breakfast was good, served in a lovely setting overlooking the gardens.
Review 20:The bed was rock hard, and had heavy blankets. The pillows were hard too. Breakfast was plentiful but the fruit option was awful...tinned and sweet. Scrambled eggs watery.
Review 21:The sun blessed us. The hotel was very good and extremely convenient for the town and waterfront. I liked the speed at which the staff changed our room to a lake view.
Review 22:Pillows were rock hard. Wifi not working although perhaps the receptionist had forgotten to connect us, as it was working next day after I enquired again. Breakfast selection very limited, no fresh fruit, only tinned.
Review 23:Beautiful views of the lake and furnished balconies. The room was small but light and bright. The gardens and grounds are beautifully kept. English tv channel, other than news was very welcome. Staff were welcoming. Good coffee at breakfast
Review 24:the restaurant maître d was very officious and did not give us a choice of menu on our 1st night so we did not have dinner there for the rest of our stay which was a shame as probably we might have liked the a,la carte. The table,d,hote menu was very poor at night
Review 25:the bedroom was very good and the air conditioning was excellent, also 2 English tv programs was a good idea
Review 26:The lake view rooms are a little small.
Review 27:Super helpful and personable staff. Top class scrambled eggs for breakfast. Excellent lakeside location and close to the centre of Stresa too.
Review 28:This is an excellent hotel. friendly staff who are always helpful. Beautiful dining room with excellent waiter service. We would recommend this hotel for a most enjoyable holiday
Review 29:Initially, we were dismayed with our room in the annexe, it seemed very tired and dated and not particularly fresh. The balcony furniture was in a deteriorated condition. There was no shower screen and the shower head could not be fixed at a high enough position to take a shower. We spoke with a lady on reception who referred us to the manager and ultimately we paid extra to be upgraded to a superior room with a lake view balcony. We were then disappointed to discover there was no clothes iron, nor any utility room in the hotel where such facilities could be available for use by guests. Clothes typically get creased in luggage and we have never stayed in a hotel where a clothes iron could not be provided, especially not a 4* hotel which the Hotel Astoria purports to be. I expressed my dismay to the gentleman on reception (not in a particularly unpleasant way) but he was a little dismissive in his attitude, then seemed to pointedly ignore me for the remainder of our stay. Ultimately we had to pay over €30 to have some items pressed for us (one of my wife's blouses was scorched). We aren't people who generally complain about things but we have certain expectations when we stay in 4* or 5* hotels.
Review 30:The location was good and the lake view from our balcony was excellent. The staff were mostly very polite and helpful.
Review 31:Staff not helpful or friendly . When we asked advice about places to visit we were referred to a nearby travel agent and they gave no advice . None of the staff engaged in conversation with us . Most of the other UK guests were with travel groups on HB and we were independent travellers staying on a B and B basis and like to eat out at local l restaurants We felt that the hotel probably caters better for those people in a Tour group. Towels and bed linen were poor quality for a 4 star hotel
Review 32:Location and the public rooms were Very good Breakfast was good but variety of choices were limited The bedroom was kept very clean
Review 33:Lake facing room on 4 floor with a deck and magnificent view Chamber maid service was top class Front desk was very good Waiters were just OK

Review 50:Everything
Review 51:None
Review 52:Central location, helpful staff. Bedroom views over the lake
Review 53:Perfect location. Very helpful staff. Underground parking for motorbike.
Review 54:Nothing!
Review 55:The manager and all the staff made an effort to be more than helpful and the car park was excellent.
Review 56:Boring breakfast, no fresh fruit only processed food
Review 57:Great location and very friendly staff. I would stay there again.
Review 58:staff not so polite, only out side pool no spa facilities at all
Review 59:good location nice view
Review 60:The location was perfect, and the lake view was great.
Review 61:Nothing ...
Review 62:Very helpful staff, great facilities in a perfect location. Good value for money.
Review 63:AC was not working. Wifi was not working. Massively overpriced.
Review 64:Good location!
Review 65:Maybe could have done with a larger TV in the bar area as the world cup was on
Review 66:Excellent hotel with friendly staff, and a superb location.
Review 67:Cleanliness. Location
Review 68:Waiters in the restaurant are a little bit too noisy, speaking to each other during breakfast time
Review 69:Beautiful location, nice room with balconies to the lake. Polite staff, nice pool.
Review 70:The building is class. The lobby and dinning room is beautiful. However the room was not at the standard of a 4 star hotel. Still a good value for money though.
Review 71:The hotel is really nice and located very close to the heart of the city of Stresa (walking distance). The car parking was provided free of charge. The staff was really friendly. You feel the touch of a family business in a professional manner. The pool area is really quite. They even had a gluten-free breakfast offering.
Review 72:Nothing. The only 'downfall' of the room, was the constant leak from the shower door but this didn't affect our stay.
Review 73:The staff couldn't have been more helpful and polite.
Review 74:Unfortunately our experience with this hotel was rather negative. We are not picky guests, but they really stressed us out. The day we arrived they put us on a very ugly room outside the building (the 118 - never take it). It was definitely not a 4 stars room: hot, loud, no curtain at the shower, so the bathroom got flooded when we showered, and had a noisy iron door (!). We complained and they said the hotel was fully booked and it was impossible to change rooms. The manager however was sympathetic and promised to move us to another room the day after, with view to the lake, as a compensation. The second room was indeed very nice. To celebrate the change we went for dinner at the hotel's restaurant and, well, it was a bit late so they basically rushed to serve us - although the dinner was expensive. Besides that, the restaurant staff was also not friendly at the breakfast. To sum up, we wouldn't stay there again. We'd go to the hotel Speranza au Lac, which was much better, for the same price.
Review 75:The hotel location is excellent, the view is very beautiful and everything is very clean.
Review 76:The hotel has an excellent location and service. The staff are very professional and friendly and they all speak English and very helpful. The view of the lake and the gardens around the hotel is very impressive and beautiful and the facilities of the hotel are very good. The internet access was provided without charge. The only suggestion for improvement is the roof garden which can be made similar to the hotel next door.
Review 77:Limited restaurant menu
Review 78:Location on Lake Maggiore Brilliant views from our rooms Friendly and helpful hotel staff Car parking at hotel Pool facilities and area
Review 79:The pillows were very hard so I found it difficult to get to sleep. The breakfast was exactly the same every day and no-one told us we could actually ask for a boiled egg instead of the usual scrambled which looked horrid some days. But we saw someone eating a boiled egg so we asked for one to make a change. There was no info on what was on in the hotel eg a buffet on Sunday and you didn't know till that day. There was a piano but no -one played. One of the waiters (small and shaved head) was very rude -I think because I accidentally sat at a table he had just cleared and wanted to lay for dinner. He sighed very loudly and pushed past me when I went up to him to find out what was wrong. It spoilt my holiday a bit. The room's tv was on a high shelf so the picture was dark although we didn't use it much. The room keys not only had the hotel name on but the room number so had we lost it anyone could have got in and there was no safe.
Review 80:Hotel Astoria is situated right on the lake front and is a pretty hotel. The room we had was a side lake view and was lovely with a walk in dressing room and large bathroom. The WIFI is free and the bar staff really friendly. The aircon is efficient. I would go back even though I have made some adverse comments.
Review 81:A minor complaint was that there were no irons in the rooms.
Review 82:It was a treat to stay at the Hotel Astoria for 5 nights after a hectic 18 day self drive tour of Spain. The rooms were clean and well presented, the staff friendly and helpful. Plenty of car parking space and a nice large pool swimming pool. The floral arrangements in the lounges were superb. No hesitattion in recommending this hotel.
Review 83:Only one complaint-our bed was too hard.
Review 84:The Hotel is positioned beautifully, opposite the lakeside. The outside areas are well laid out with lawn and lovely flower beds. The interior is old world style and elegance. The most important feature however was the friendliness of the staff.who
Review 85:Noise from bathrooms and people showering every morning as from 5h22! The plumbing is atrocious. The noise from the pipes gurgling horrendous. Nevers again.
Review 86:Location
Review 87:nothing
Review 88:great welcoming hotel, rooms spot on and choose a front facing room with balcony. excellent views of the lake and close to town centre. secure parking available and if weather good there is a wonderful outside pool at the rear of the hotel
Review 89:excellent location with a room overlooking the lake - beautiful gardens and great breakfast - choices for all - managed Wi-Fi in our room, which was very convenient - no taxi to catch early train but the hotel offered us a lift in their hotel car - very good - would definitely stay at this hotel again.
Review 90:The wifi reception in lounge was lowsy , took hours to come uo ,if ever. Being charged for hotel computer use , even though we were told the first 30 minutes were free .
Review 91:The ambience of the hotel , particularly the dining room
Review 92:My brother and myself stayed overnight whislt travelling down in my classic mini cooper s to partake ib the charity rally the italian job. The hotel was wonderful and the staff brilliant and very caring even about looking after the classic car
Review 93:The problem with this hotel is that they charge you quite a lot, but youdont seem to get much back. The hotel is quite dated, and hasnt gone through an upgrade in years. The overall method of operation is quite average (almost aiming for mediocracy, rather than perfection). Which is surprising given that they are charging nearly 200 USD a night (for a hotel in a small town). Unfortunately this has become true of the entire shorefront in Stresa. Seems like all these hotels are operating like a Cartel. None of them have upgraded their facilities since the 1970s and continue to charge pretty high prices compared to international standards. And they are all in collusion with the other, so none of them have to compete with each other and upgrade (and continue charging rather high rates). Old TVs, no tea set, old lamps, poor beds... its surprising to find this when the hotel is charging 200 USD a night (and its not even peak season). One would expect some level of upgrade and comforts to the traveller. Sadly it seems all the hotels in this part of Italy have decided to lock in their prices at this rate, and give very little to the customer. On a dollar-for-dollar basis, their offering is very uncompetitive to other parts of the world where for 200 USD you can enjoy a very very luxurious stay. Long-term this will hurt this Italian town.. tourists will choose to vacation in places where they get more for their savings. Even a 3 min taxi ride to the train station is 8 Euros. If someone from the Italian Tourism Body is reading this, its worth thinking about. Tourists go on vacation to enjoy.. not to get fleeced dry.
Review 94:Location is good as they are on the waterfront. Some of the hotels upthe shoreline are considered to be better location, but we found thiswas closer to the main town square.
Review 95:to be staying in the back of the hotel in the kind of place that looks more self catering.
Review 96:location
Review 97:there was nothing to dislike
Review 98:everything
Review 99:Reception staff ignored our complaints about noise and no water. The fitness room is rubbish
Review 100:Location, cleanliness, fair breakfast
Review 101:Absence of tea and coffee facilities in room.
Review 102:Well situated within easy walking distance of town and ferries.
Review 103:breakfast staff the worst we have ever encountered
Review 104:location,reception staff, room,
Review 105:The restaurant staff were not all courteous or very well organised at times.
