Reviews for Grand Hotel Des Iles Borromees

Review 1:There was a level of haughtiness from some of the (male) staff that belongs in the realm of pretension and seems more to do with their egos than genuine connection with guests.

Review 2:Stunning location in a magical environment.

Review 3:This was a truly beautiful hotel, run how hotels used to be run with polite and helpful staff in every department and total commitment to customer services

Review 4:Some of the hotel staff were fantastic and very helpful, others were not so much. The unhelpful staff used "we are in low season" as a reason not to even try to help eg all questions were answered with we are in low season. Nothing more, nothing less. When we stayed on one weekend in September last year, in a slightly better room, which we didn't feel was worth the extra money, all the staff were more than happy to help with inquiries then. Overall inconsistent service, somewhat disappointed. The internal spa area is not the best if you want to chill out and stay in one area. Had to walk a flight of stairs down from the hamman to the pool and no water provided nor pool chairs. So if you like to totally relax at the spa, set up is not conducive,

Review 5:stressa is a great out of season place to go - plenty to do still and enough restaurants to try. The deco of the hotel is very special and worth experiencing at least once. Even though it wasn't to our taste, the opulence and the richness was a treat. We would definitely recommend staying at the hotel for at least one night.

Review 6:The pillows were a bit too hard for my liking.

Review 7:We had booked for a garden view but was treated with a room on the side of building with arrest view of the Lake. The ever flowing freshly squeezed orange juice at breakfast in the lovely dining room and mosaic elevator floors and inlaid wood paneled doors make this a lovely stay.

Review 8:Really nothing. I can imagine that some guests using the spa facilities might prefer to have some daylight - all is in the basement of the hotel.

Review 9:The tranquillity of the place and natural friendliness and helpfulness of all staff members we came into contact with. We loved the artwork on the various floors and the ethereal character of the building.

Review 10:Room service was imposible to reach. Line was always busy. Did not get my morning coffee. It would have been nice to have coffee available in my room or available in one of the public areas.

Review 11:Almost Everything

Review 12:We had been to several 5 stars hotels in Italy and this one truly was 5 stars! Beautiful accommodations, centrally located, and the staff was very professional and accommodating.

Review 13:Air Conditioning was shut off for the season (mid Oct) room had no screens and room was very warm.

Review 14:Grand Hotel at very fair prices ... they upgraded our room from a gardenview to waterview when we checked in... helpful staff ... VERY formal facility

Review 15:No bad experiences.

Review 16:Staff were friendly, efficient and helpful. Dining room staff were well experienced and service was second to none. Crisp bedding changed daily. Superb ambience.

Review 17:A superb hotel evoking the style of the hotels of a Grand Tour of the 19th century. The ambience and comfort and service was superb. The view from our room over Lake Maggiore was wonderful. We also enjoyed a delicious dinner in the lake front dining room. The whole experience was unforgettable .

Review 18:Very overpriced. No kettle in room. Very hard mattress so not a comfortable nights sleep.

Review 19:Fantastic view from lake view room. Staff very friendly and helpful. Nice restaurant and superb breakfast. Close to town centre.

Review 20:Breakfast was disappointing with a poor selection of fruit and never any fresh bread. I did spot some once when we came down a little earlier at 8am but it had gone by the time I'd finished my cereal and wasn't replenished. Full marks however for the proper freshly-squeezed orange juice.

Review 21:Excellent location within easy walking distance of the town centre and restaurants. Our room was small but the bed and pillows were the most comfortable we've experienced in a hotel. Beautiful good-sized marble bathroom.

Review 22:One bad breakfast experience when staff gave priority to large charter grups

Review 23:Great location on front . A certain faded glamour .Friendly staff .Excellent room and balcony

Review 24:My in-law mailed something to me, but addressed to hotel. It arrived before me, & hotel marked it return to sender. Poor management.

Review 25:Dining room staff & breakfast were excellent.

Review 26:A tad expensive but I suppose thats what quality costs. Wifi quality and code ticket system could be improved

Review 27:The service in the hotel was very good, the location is excellent and the breakfasts were fabulous. The building itself is very impressive and creates an ambiance for your stay.

Review 28:wi-fi was slow and terribly unreliable bed could have been more comfortable room was small

Review 29:hotel was beautiful and had lots of old-world character A/C worked well staff and breakfast were excellent

Review 30:Didn't like the staff wanted and tips X specially at the door first thing that happened to us it didn't need to to walk to the room

Review 31:Location and the food very good

Review 32:Whilst the reception staff were most helpful they could not find an alternative room on our first night as we had requested a balcony and the one allocated was small and rather noisy being next to a service entry. Again it was extremely well decorated with Murano glass chandelier and old marble walled bathroom but could have been cleaner. The first room was very small but the next with balcony much better and quieter.

Review 33:Beautiful belle époque style hotel in wonderful location facing the Lake. the charm of the hotel starts with the old style reception and concierge where bookings are still handled by hand and not computer. The corridors on each floor, specially the second have lovely paintings and antiques on display and the original opulent decorations as with all the public areas on the ground floor. I hope that this elegance will resist temptation to make a modern upgrade as is wonderful to still see this. The breakfast was very good and we liked the nostalgia of the small bar with perfect barman and again all billing carried out by hand, not a computer in sight ! Stay at this delightful dinasour of a hotel before it is too late and disappears into modernity.

Review 34:Cooked breakfast could be better. The prices in the bars and room service are ridiculous. €15 for a can of coke and a beer at the pool, €16 for a gin and tonic at the bar. Quite a formal atmosphere.

Review 35:Beautiful hotel. We were kindly upgraded to a lake view room on arrival. Very clean.

Review 36:Beautiful hotel right on the lake side. Exquisite deco, very rich and full of antiques and beautiful paintings. Very comfortable beds and rooms. Breakfast is an event itself. There is everything you could wish for. Highly recommended.

Review 37:The bedspread wasn't clean! When we removed it, we found little black curly hairs on our white sheets.... Wi-Fi works only on the reception. Very rude and unpolite young guy with glasses at the reception desk! He thought we didn't noticed he was making fun of us!!!

Review 38:Breathtaking building, ideal for a one night stay. Nice pool area, great big buffet.

Review 39:The size of the safe , too small , needs to be able to take at least an iPad pref with the ability to charge device whilst in the safe

Review 40:Welcoming staff Excellent position Lovely room Excellent breakfast Very special evening meals Lovely gardens Convenient for town facilities but lovely and quiet

Review 41:nothing

Review 42:Fantastic Location with the most impressive building that stands on the edge of the lake, with the most outstanding architecture both inside and out,the Bedrooms are of a bygone era however now including all the latest amenities, the Restaurant Terrace overlooking the Lake served the most outstanding Buffet Breakfast, the Staff were outstanding cannot wait to go back

Review 43:Very small bathroom - door closed onto toilet. Leak in the shower screen caused some flooding. Satellite TV did not work (consistent interrupted service) - not a huge problem as out of the room most of the time.

Review 44:Great hotel. Very helpful staff. A little pricey on some simple items, otherwise great location within easy reach of old town. Pool area great for lounging.

Review 45:The beds were not comfortable

Review 46:The hotel was great and it has very beautiful view of the lake , close to the center of the city, great manager and staff except one of the recipient

Review 47:First morning there was a 10-15 minute qeue to get a table for breakfast. I know they were fully booked but still!!!!

Review 48:Everything about this hotel exudes luxury, class, and professionalism. The location couldn't be better looking out on Lake Maggiore and the Borromean islands. The common areas are incredibly beautiful with untold quantity of fine art everywhere you look. What's not to love!!!

Review 49:Free wi fi a tad slow but as its free? ...

Review 50:Brilliant location 5 minutes from the centre. A wonderfully kept and decorated hotel. Real history in the hotel that is a pleasure to walk around and enjoy.

Review 51:Service at the reception desk was very disappointing, we travelled in a group and wanted to split the bill in between the group evenly, the person who took care of us did not wanted to do it, I insisted and finally got him to do it, but he was complaining all the time. We wanted tickets for a concert in town and they told us to go and by them at the theatre, only when asked if the concierge could by them, they offered the service. The wi-fi is deplorable, so slow that no one single video could be open.

Review 52:The building is gorgeous as well as the yard and the property is very well maintained. Service at the restaurant was good as well as the quality of the food.

Review 53:Nothing to comment - a dream location to spend a couple of days

Review 54:Everything - friendliness of staff, great help and advice from concierge, quality of room and food, good swimming pool, location at couple of 100 meters walking from the centre of Stresa

Review 55:It was hot and the ac unit could not keep up. Europe, to be fair, is ina 5 week heat-wave.

Review 56:The property is increedible - location, beauty, breakfast. All wasexcellent and we will be back!

Review 57:The mattress was soft/old and in need of a change. Our room was not facing the lake so it wasn't very luxurious.

Review 58:The atmosphere takes you to a bygone era. The lovely grounds and breakfast area. All the staff are extremely helpful and attentive and especially the reception and concierge.

Review 59:Please don't serve Nescafé, as only option in room, you are in Italy.

Review 60:The location and the hotel is amazing. The staff and the head concierge of reception are fantastic, helpful in any respect. Our room and view over the lake made the holiday very special. We will return, perfect location to start or end your grand tour of Italy!

Review 61:Long drive to northbound Autostrada. Invoice wrong in first round. Poor noise insulation to next door bathroom. Poor quality toilet paper (sorry!).

Review 62:Friendly & attentive staff, good restaurant, good food, ideal location for visits to the Borromean Islands. Altogether we spent five very enjoyable days in this hotel!

Review 63:Dinner when they are busy with Receptions and Large Groups. I think our main meal was handed down to a trainee. It was awful. What was worse the Waiter did not want to do anything about it. When we told Reception they immediately reimbursed us. Beware of 'False Bonhommie' in the Restaurant.

Review 64:Comfort, Service and Location

Review 65:We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights. We would have stayed forever. We spent our 40th anniversary there and it was absolutely the most perfect place in the world for us.

Review 66:extrem lansames Internet. Äusserst mäßige offene Weine in der Bar.

Review 67:tolle Lage direkt am Seeuferweg, Stilvolle Zimmer, für ein Luxushotel gutes Preis-Leistungsverhältnis

Review 68:Incredible Hotel with disappointing dining room; felt like a banquet hall/not intimate or comfortable. Food was okay. Bed was like a rock.

Review 69:Breathtaking View. Balcony Room with lovely sitting area.

Review 70:Truly a grand European hotel and the staff / service is exceptional. Taking breakfast on the veranda is a treat. The lakeside location is both scenic and delightful.

Review 71:The guys at the reception were fully / confident busy with themselves. That the first hotel nobody mentions, when you enter the hotel.

Review 72:Excellent renovated hotel in the old stile with a lot of antiques.

Review 73:We had mixed experiences in the spa- some excellent some poor. In other hotels of this class it is the norm to receive complimentary water and or fruit in the room, this hotel doesn't supply any, which was a bit of a shame.

Review 74:The hotel is an old historical building- you can imagine tourists in times gone past enjoying the facilities and walking the gardens both of the hotel and nearby villas and the islands. The service was excellent and the room comfortable with the view that we had requested of the lake.

Review 75:Staff are very off hand. Asked for a kettle and it was a difficult negotiation and when finally arrived there were no cups. We were told to go to the bat and get one if we wanted.

Review 76:Opulence and location. Gym and spa and pool is wonderful. View from the window is to die for.

Review 77:The only thing that distribution out perfect vacation was the water temperature in the bathroom. The water were not hot enough for a good shower.

Review 78:Great hotel. Very fancy. Very good service and excellent breakfast

Review 79:Cost is on the high side but is a life time experience

Review 80:location garden fitness centre tennis court breakfast and museum art works plus the way over the top opulence.

Review 81:When requesting a card to place on the door to order breakfast - and explaining there was no card in the room (in fact for the second night running) - the concierge said: impossible there is a card in the room!

Review 82:view and beautiful interior

Review 83:Don't stay there with your family otherwise you risk to listen to bad jokes from staff, have bad nights and risk to pay too much for what is supposed to be paid by the hotel. Also you'll need to clean your car from the sand in the parking.

Review 84:Breakfast was good Location is good

Review 85:Very slow internet you have to boil your own eggs , I did not come to work for the hotel they can do it for me the bread is good only if you pay for dinner And when you get dinner you have to decide if you want a candle or a flowerpot very strange

Review 86:Looks like museum or palace great location

Review 87:Bed was horrible (mattress, pillows and sheets very bad). Restaurant for dinner not great. Everything else really good.

Review 88:Great hotel, great staff, amazing location.

Review 89:The bedroom was too hot, and air conditioning not up to compensating.

Review 90:The ambiance and hotel setting is excellent. Staff were friendly and attentive. The food was of a high quality. Overall everything was spot-on.

Review 91:duty manager on the reception could be more friendly. the rest of the stuff is very helpful. cosmetics in bathroom were very poor. I had to ask to bring shampoo as it was only one in a room. I've ask to bring razor and dental kit - they bring only razor. This is small things, however for 5starlux very important

Review 92:price, view on the lake, free parking

Review 93:We found that the internet was announced as 'for free' only for 24hours - couldn't confirm it since we stayed only for a weekend

Review 94:Perfect location, looks like a museum, very helpful staff (we had a problem in a bathroom and it was fixed in 15 minutes), great breakfast (delicious fresh juices)

Review 95:Charging 5.00 euro for requested bucket of ice delivered to our room. They did credit the 5 euro when I expressed my dismay.

Review 96:The staff. They were excellent on every level.

Review 97:The toilet was dirty!!!! Bed matresses is imposible to sleep on Very poor selection of breakfast, we ask a la carte of eggs, the answer was this is a la carte and he showed buffet. For those travelers who want to have fresh omlet is not the place to stay, you have to beg for it anf feel weird even asking. Breakfast staff was rude, bringing wrong orders and loudly convincing that he is not mistaken every time. Never ask concierge advice if you don't want to end up in hotel business agreement recommendation

Review 98:Location

Review 99:We didn't eat in the restaurant of an evening as it is expensive compared to the options available in the town.

Review 100:Excellent breakfast, lovely bathroom and staff were efficient and friendly.

Review 101:Chamber maid did not speak any language except Italian and we had a difficulty asking for her help when one of our party was poorly and needed the bathroom cleaning

Review 102:Welcoming. Very enjoyable breakfast. Comfortable room.

Review 103:A step back in time with all the high quality amenities you would expect. The staff gracious, the food excellent, the grounds and location inviting for a walk, and much of the art work museum quality. Loved our stay.

Review 104:Price for dinner was very high. Family of 5 - 3 young children who split a meal. Over 250 euro. Crazy. One glass of wine per parent. It was raining and we had just driven from Florence. Did not want to go out.

Review 105:location, beautiful hotel, fantastic view, helpful staff

Review 106:A bit of a walk from center of Stresa, if you are older. The bedrooms seemed a bit dated.

Review 107:Being just across the avenue from the beautiful lake and promenade; the gorgeous public rooms and bar on the lobby level; the wonderful breakfasts; convenient parking.

Review 108:There was nothing to dislike about this hotel! It was a highlight of our European trip.

Review 109:This hotel is absolutely stunning, both inside and out. The staff are teriffic and the rooms are very opulent, yet extremely comfortable. A stay here is a very memorable experience. It sits in a very central location, overlooking the prettiest lake, and only a 5 minute walk to the gorgeous township of Stresa.

Review 110:Our room was on the back side of thehotel, facing the garden. At the top of each hour (up to and including 11 p.m.) a piece of music was played very loudly, a Beethoven excerpt witha tinny sound as from a hurdy-gurdy, which was very obnoxious, and disturbed our sleep. Also, when we asked for a recommendation of a restaurant for dinner, the concierge directed us to Mama Mia's, where we had second-rate service and food. We did not have lunch or dinner at the hotel becuase of the prices.

Review 111:Beautiful bulding and gardens. Capable and helpful staff. Knowing that Winston Churchill stayed there on his honeymoon made it seem very special to us. The breakfast (included) was very good.

Review 112:Nothing.

Review 113:Everything about this hotel is excellent, staff, location and food. Breakfast is sumptuous, dining is most refined, the view of the lake is unsurpassable.

Review 114:The rooms are a bit small and "old school" but that didn't bother us. The rooms at the front of the hotel offer a great view of the lake but could be a bit noisy as a road passes in front. We took a garden view room which was very quiet, less expensive and still offers view of some hills/mountains.

Review 115:Hotel with a special something reminding one of the glorious times of the region. Compared to other similar hotels it has been well maintained and does not feel rundown. The gardens are gorgeous and very well kept. Breakfast is good and there is fresh orange juice.

Review 116:It's not cheap but you can see why.

Review 117:We had passed this hotel on previous visits - hence - I wanted to stay here !. We stayed here for 1 night only as it's not cheap but the experience was wonderful. The hotel is quite simply beautiful. All the staff we came into contact with were extremely friendly and helpful. You feel special staying here. The highlight for us was the breakfast on the terrace outside - overlooking the lake. We were lucky with the weather - sunny and no winds. Breakfast was like a scene out of British TV series Downton Abbey !. Brilliant. And the breakfast was A1 - hot food, cold food - even smoked salmon which was beautiful with the scrambled eggs plus they serve the coffee beautifully in individual jugs for each table. The corridors on each hotel floor are a trip into history with paintings and statues. We loved it.

Review 118:Nothing

Review 119:Everything! The hotel combines it's great history with an up-to-date high level of comfort. Friendly and helpful staff, nice and spacious rooms, great breakfast buffet and excellent (outside) swimming pools

Review 120:A hotel of this standing and cost should have a chef cooking fresh eggs and pancakes, etc at breakfast. Dinner was stuffy and the food was ordinary. The dessert trolley was boring, tasteless and lacked any creativity !!

Review 121:The staff at the concierge desk were brilliant. We had a problem with the GPS in our car and they went out of their way to help us solve our problem.

Review 122:The bar staff attitude was poor considering the high prices charged

Review 123:Well located for trips around the lakes. A grand hotel but rather spoilt by reproduction chintz rather then period splendour. Beautiful gardens in an equally beautiful setting

Review 124:For such an expensive hotel the breakfast was poor. Cooked breakfast was scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon every day. No other hot options, nothing like pancakes etc. At more than £300/night B&B would expect much better.

Review 125:Very helpful staff, clean, comfortable, decor etc very good

Review 126:outdated room, bathroom plastic appliances and not clean, poor quality of breakfast buffet and overall staff service main street is 50 meters from hotel can be noisy bed was poor quality

Review 127:View

Review 128:The hotel is fabulous, well situated in front of the beautiful lake, they also have a nice spa, beautiful well kept gardens and the staff are efficient and very service oriented. The breakfast was varied and of high quality. I would like to thank the staff of this amazing hotel for their hospitality.

Review 129:The cost of rooms at the front of the hotel overlooking the lake were far too high - almost double rooms facing the back! In our room (facing the back) the noise of the fountain and the chime of the clock on the hour were really annoying.

Review 130:Loved the Belle Epoque style of hotel. Great location few minutes walk from the centre of the town and easy access to the ferry to the nearby islands. Staff and facilities were great. We had one evening meal in the hotel and the food was excellent, though very expensive.

Review 131:Wonderful lake side view from our room, character of a grand old hotel, very helpful staff, especially at the concierge desk, breakfast outside, sitting by the pool.

Review 132:the stuff wasn't kind at breakfast, our mother asked some water and the waiter sent her to pick it by herself. the snack bar is terrible!!! the food was bad and the stuff as well!

Review 133:the rooms, the garden, the view from both sides - lake and garden (we had 2 rooms one of each), the breakfast.

Review 134:As impressive as the pictures suggest, staff excellent and very helpful. Left alone unless you request something

Review 135:Staffs.

Review 136:Good location.

Review 137:Soundproofing not too good as to be expected in an old building

Review 138:Beautiful splendour. Stayed out of season at a good price inc good breakfast.

Review 139:Beautiful hotel, beautiful room, staff professional, helpful and friendly
