Reviews for Hotel Royal
Review 1:We were initially given a room (405) that has a bath and a hand shower, but no shower curtain or glass wall. I can't believe a hotel can still have such bathrooms. We asked to be moved to a room with a shower, and got moved to another small room (404) that had a shower. It had good windows, but the frames were so poor that you could see between the sliding door and the wall frame when the door was closed and locked. Needless to say, this does not keep out the loud street and train noise. I like very firm beds, but the bed was so hard that it almost like laying on a wood plank!
Review 2:We had the fixed price (25 Euros) dinner one (of our two) nights, and the service (white table cloth with proper settings) and food was good. The roof is basically a big terrace with wonderful views over Lago Maggiore. It would have been even better if the hotel cleaned the tables and chairs provided.
Review 3:Not really a bad experience but the walk back from Stresa at night is rather dark. There are some gorgeous hotels facing the water, much closer, that we will consider next time.
Review 4:Easy parking on site. Clean, neat room. Good breakfast. Courteous staff.About a 15 to 20 minute walk to Stresa on flat ground.
Review 5:Maybe to offer more choice of cereals & grapefriut at Breakfast. Make better use of the roof terrace.
Review 6:Warm welcome from all the Staff . Really helpful answering any queries. Spotless rooms. Lovely food. Spectacular views.
Review 7:Living so far away from such a lovely place
Review 8:Excellent. Very close to station, cable car and ferry. Pleasant walk to town though unless you have to, there is no real need to go there. The resturant is exceptional both in food and service: from what I could see all the guests eat here. Of particular interest beyond the roof top terrace ( good for street side rooms), the views of the lake from the garden side rooms, the pool, the garden, the library, the piano, the bar, the service in general are the original oil paintings throughout the hotel by the owner.... We stayed here for 2 nights.. Given the tranquility of the hotel and the variety of activities in the area I recommend a longer stay.
Review 9:Nothing.
Review 10:Very pleasent, with that indefinable old world charm.Head waiter is charming, wearing a cream jacket in the morning and changing to black for dinner.Artist owner which shows in the decor.
Review 11:It was a good 20 minute walk to Stresa where all the eating places are, there were no eating places near the Hotel Royal. The bed was quite hard ,so uncomfortable night,no heating or cooling in the room and as we got soaked in the rain nowhere to dry our clothes
Review 12:Friendly staff ,hotel located right on lake, breakfast was quite good, lots of ham and cheese, typical Italian breakfast.10 minute walk from the train station,so didnt need taxi.
Review 13:Air con controlled by management and turned off at all times. Long walk to centre, OK for us but may be an issue for less mobile people.
Review 14:Welcoming staff, very clean hotel
Review 15:Good location, close to the ferry and short walk to downtown Stresa. Nice swimming pool. Breakfast on the outside terrace was good. Wonderful terrace on top of the hotel with view over the lake.
Review 16:The view from our balcony of the lake and Pescatori Island, having a mini fridge in our room, friendly and helpful staff, lovely dining area, and free use of a computer in foyer.
Review 17:Wifi was slow.
Review 18:Great hotel with friendly staff. Our room was on the top floor with a large terrace! Very comfortable room. Breakfast was ok, not the best. Location wise there is a cable car (not working this time) and boats to the nearby Islands. City center is 10 minutes by walking. Free parking.
Review 19:The service and the lovely ambiance of the hotel. The people could not do enough to help with our various requests, from arranging transport to various places in Stresa, to advice on day trips on Lago Maggiore, and visits to Locarno, Switzerland. The dining was in a beautiful indoor to outdoor garden environment and the food and service excellent.
Review 20:The furnishings are rather old fashioned. It felt like a hotel that could be wonderful with a little updating and flair - as it is the indoor public areas are not attractive.
Review 21:Lovely view from balcony. There is an enormous roof terrace with fantastic views that hardly seemed to be used at all. Good outside space too.
Review 22:Very friendly and accommodating staff. All facilities as you would expect from a 3+ rather than a 3 star hotel. Lovely view of the lake. Convenient 10 minute walking distance to the main centre of the town and lake.
Review 23:nothing
Review 24:Location near lake and ferry to Isola Bella. Nice swimming pool and gardens. Very well maintained. Food very good. Set dinner menu very reasonable at 25 euros. Good car park.
Review 25:beds are nightmare, mattrases are as hard as wood, pillows are the same, i have a strong feeling that i was sleeping on table not bed. very poor breakfast, you have to pay for eggs.
Review 26:location, free parking, nice view
Review 27:Rooms fronting the road are very noisy. They'll boil you an egg for breakfast, if you are lucky, but only if the "Kitchen is ready".
Review 28:Stresa is beautiful. The hotel is not bad for a 3 star, and the little pool area is nice
Review 29:The hotel is 100yds from the jetty for the ferries to the 3 islands which are well worth a visit. The staff were very efficient and helpful. The lake view from our room was stunning.
Review 30:The WiFi wasn't stable in the room.
Review 31:The staff was genuinely lovely. Dinner was surprisingly good and at great value. The music selection in the lobby was a nice touch.
Review 32:Mattress too hard.
Review 33:Friendly staff, beautiful grounds, delicious breakfast, pleasant pool, enjoyable walk (approx. 15 minutes) along lake promenade to reach town center. Would highly recommend to others.
Review 34:Parking on site quite limited, didn't move my car during our stay out of fear of having to find parking somewhere else, along the road, after. Lift is quite slow, but we were on holidays and not in a rush, so no bother! The coffee is very strong - real Italian, creamy stuff, so ordered tea the next morning...
Review 35:Aircon was excellent in temperatures of 32 degrees Celsius and more - wouldn't have survived without it! Gorgeous little pool outside and whirlpool, all with sun loungers and bar service, makes for a real luxury feel, loved it! Breakfast was varied for all tastes, all you can eat buffet - nice choice of cold Italian meats and cheeses, freshly pressed juices, croissants, breads and cakes, cereals, yoghurt etc. Nice little hotel bar with option to sit outside. Only couple of steps from where ferries leave for the islands. Approx. 15 to 20 mins walk along promenade into stresa town. Next supermarket (very small) approx ten mins up the hill. Don't miss out on the breathtakingly stunning view from the roof terrace!
Review 36:Low water pressure Makes the shower an unpleasant experience
Review 37:Goog location, a walking distence from the center Wonderful lake view from the room. Comfortable room Very good breakfast
Review 38:Great location. Just outbid town centre on edge of town. Just above funicular and ferry terminal. 10 minute walk to train station. Public buses outside. Alibus from Malpensa stops at ponte roddo very close. Great relaxing quiet spot. Easy walk along promenade to town about 20 minutes slow leisure walk. Hotel breakfast included and wifi worked well. Great artwork everywhere. Beautiful rose gardens. Has a pool though to cold when we stayed to go in. Coffee at breakfast much nicer and stronger ordered individually from expresso machine. Quiet and clean. Would stay there again. Great price.
Review 39:The plumbing was a little annoying at 7.30am when it seemed the whole hotel started toileting - the water appeared to be piped via our bathroom.. Nothing like a water feature in the Lakes!
Review 40:Comfort, cleanliness and swimming pool was great. Service from staff in dining and front desk was excellent. Although the location is 15 mins. from town we loved the walk through the park and promenade. We recommend it.
Review 41:The air-conditioning is adjustable from your bedroom, but they turn it OFF centrally so it will not work on some random schedule. Asking for it to be turned on yields no result. We had no soap in our room and the housekeeper came in and checked to be sure we hadn't stolen it before providing us some. The bed is uncomfortable and doesn't even have a mattress pad on it. The pool and whirlpool are cold. They also charge for anything they deem an "extra". Want to use the pool? Pay 2 Euros for a pool towel. Fancy having daily housekeeping? That will be 2.50 Euro per person per day. Want coffee in your room? Sorry, not possible. It seemed everything was "not possible."
Review 42:Nice location, beautiful, well-preserved hotel. Charming details.
Review 43:We arrived by train and although the walk to the hotel wasn't too far, it is not an easy road to walk along as there is no pavement and it is quite a busy road.
Review 44:The staff were very friendly and helpful. Our room with a balcony with garden view was lovely. The roof terrace afforded spectacular views of the lake and Islands.
Review 45:The hotel restaurant was not traditional italian food. The waiters were like robots. The food was mush. The cleaners were wiping both the tablecloths and ashtrays over with the same cloth!
Review 46:Room clean, comfortable, nice balcony. Good bathroom.
Review 47:We loved it all
Review 48:We loved the location the view of the islands in the lake from our balcony were amazing. A nice walk along the front to the centre where there are plenty of bars shops and restaurants.
Review 49:It is a pity they do not have bicycles ...all the rest is superb!
Review 50:Everything! There is a bus leaving from the city centre of Stresa directly to the airport of Malpensa. Cost is 12 euro. Need to make reservations. The beautiful garden in the hotel - lovely to sit! For a 3 star hotel it is really very good!
Review 51:Good situation near lake with boat connections to the islands and beyond, close by. Lovely walk to the centre of Stresa along lakeside promenade. Comfortable hotel set in pretty gardens. Friendly, helpful staff. Good restaurant.
Review 52:Pool and "Hot tub" spa pool were both freezing cold. The bar needs better decaf coffee.
Review 53:Staff are very attentive and the food service was very good. The view of the lake from the roof top lounge is incredible.
Review 54:Temperature control of room was a little challenging.
Review 55:Location, we had a lake view and I think it was worth the extra money, amazingly beautiful. Decoration was an interesting mix of modern and antique.
Review 56:Old fashioned decor, tea towels for towels, waffle towels as towels. Location was a little far from Stresa central. Breakfast was average. Set menu for dinner
Review 57:Room was clean, staff friendly, Wifi was good.
Review 58:Parking was and issue and we had to park a fair distance from the hotel. I think that this would be an issue no matter which hotel in the area you stayed. If they provided parking at other hotels I am sure you would be paying top dollar for this convenience!
Review 59:We had a upper floor room looking up Lake Maggiore which had a great view. The hotel was quiet besides the traffic noise during the day which you can't avoid. The location was right across from the ferry which was very handy. There are several restaurants within walking distance so you don't have to get the car and drive! Breakfast was in a large room and there was something to please everyone.
Review 60:Nothing
Review 61:Everything about this hotel was good. Breakfast basic but adequate plus could order from the kitchen if required, location was about 25 minutes from centre of Stresa but a very pleasant walk.
Review 62:We found the location of Hotel Royal excellent. Approximately 500mt from the train station. A stroll down the road to the Funicular or take a ferry boat across to the Borromean Islands. In the evenings we would walk approximately 1kilometre along the promenade. It is possible to stop at various alfresco cafes for lunch or a drink. In the town city an excellent choice of restaurants. We were lucky to have a room at the hotel with balcony view to Lake Maggiorre.
Review 63:Hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. The hotel is grand with public rooms, gardens, a pool, and the most delightful breakfast room we have seen. We enjoyed breakfast with an array of choices in the garden each morning. It is a most pleasant 15 minute stroll along the lakeside promenade to the main square. There is easy, free parking and the hotel is immaculate. We would gladly return on future trips to spectacular Stresa.
Review 64:Not sign-posted as other hotels are. We went the long way from the station. Wi-Fi very temperamental which is frustrating if you are trying to make other bookings.
Review 65:Fabulous view of the Borromean Islands and easy access by ferry 2 minutes walk from the hotel. Pleasant walk into town. Hotel and Breakfast was typical of what you get on group tours.
Review 66:Extra pillows would have been good, but we did not actually ask for more.
Review 67:Good location, good breakfast and good staff. Spacious room with fab view from the balcony. Able to park onsite.
Review 68:Supposed to be Michelin Star restaurant but poor and overpriced in our opinion. We ate out. Maitre and waiters at breakfast shouted across restaurant. Poorly laid tables.
Review 69:Location
Review 70:The coffee for breakfast was a bit thick, maybe it was a matter of taste.
Review 71:A lovely hotel with very friendly and helpful staff. In a good location with just a short walk to the town along a pretty lakeside path. The food in the hotel was excellent, a good variety of what seemed like local produce and always interesting recipes.
Review 72:The beds were as hard as rock. No additional pillows. The bath was dangerous and the hot water was unreliable. The breakfast was drab.Very disappointing and very tired as a hotel.
Review 73:The female receptionist who used to work at a hotel in Lake Orta was extremely helpful and her other female colleague whose English was not as good was also helpful. They were the highlight of the whole stay.
Review 74:No dislikes!
Review 75:A wonderful family run hotel in the heart of the Italian Lakes. The attention to detail eg the style and quality of décor & furnishings, the friendly staff, lovely gardens & pool and amazing collection of original art throughout the hotel. All these elements help make the Royal an outstanding hotel!
Review 76:We went in July apparently "mossie" time, not good for my wife who is allergic. Not the hotel's fault of course.
Review 77:Not far from lake. Staff brilliant, nothing to much trouble. We had a large room which was quiet and a great view of the lake. Food was good. Would definitely stay here again.
Review 78:Not so great were Showers Beds Towels
Review 79:The location is good, about 10 - 15 mins walk along the lake to town centre, but not as central as other hotels in the town. The staff were helpful and the hotel is clean and clearly well maintained. However the rooms, we took 2 rooms for us and our older teenage daughters, are limited in that the showers (our daughters only had a bath and handset) are not great and the beds were not the most comfortable. The breakfast was pleasant, and in a very pleasant room/terrace, but nothing special. The view from our room was good (over the lakes). Overall we enjoyed the stay and have nothing really negative to say. However we stayed at 2 other 3 star hotels during our trip and this was the weakest of the 3 in terms of what we generally look for (Clean room, comfortable bed, effective (hot) shower and good breakfast.
Review 80:A little far from the town. Took us 15/20 min to walk in hot conditions. Ok if you have a car though.
Review 81:Very pleasant and helpful staff. Lovely room. Breakfast splendid.
Review 82:Shower over bath - width of bath was tiny which made it very slippery when showering bordering on dangerous! Need anti-slip mats
Review 83:Cleanliness was of a very high standard, staff very friendly
Review 84:a bit noisy in the room due to the road next to the hotel and the rails closeby
Review 85:all employees were really nice and friendly, always helpful with requests and even keeping the shoes we unfortunately forgot in the room :) breakfast was good, hotel situated next to the lake and ferry station but a bit further from the center and restaurants
Review 86:Very small bath/shower. Not much room to move.
Review 87:Enjoyed our stay here. Staff were fantastic. Nothing was too much bother. A big thank you especially to reception staff - so efficient! Would definitely stay here again.
Review 88:It was a fair walk into town but we are fit so it did not matter
Review 89:I liked everything about the hotel bedrooms were excellent very clean & comfortable and views were wonderful
Review 90:Welcoming, friendly, helpful staff. Nothing was too much trouble. They had already told me that the hotel was not completely wheelchair friendly but they went out of their way to ensure we had a most enjoyable stay.
Review 91:The fruit juice served at breakfast.
Review 92:The setting, great view from our balcony and the terrace on top of the building. Very pleasant, helpful staff. Breakfast on the terrace.
Review 93:Choice of breakfast was limited and the choice was the same each morning.Bar closed very early at night so no availability to come back and relax with a drink after an evening meal.
Review 94:Location of the hotel was good a nice 10 minute walk into town.Room was lovely with a nice view.
Review 95:The food was very average.
Review 96:The hotel was very nice, excellent bedroom with balcony and lake view. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The location was good, although it was 15minute walk into the centre of tresa.
Review 97:I liked the position and the ambience of the hotel , lovely furnishings and living areas.
Review 98:Breakfast is less than satisfactory and restaurant staff is simply ignoring you.
Review 99:Location is very nice with lovely view over the lake and islands.
Review 100:Poor brekfast
Review 101:Nice staff , location
Review 102:Could invest in new pillows. Found them very flat.
Review 103:Attentive welcoming staff. Excellent food. Stunning lake view room. Short walk into Stresa.
Review 104:Location & food
Review 105:Mattress was very firm and not that comfortable.
Review 106:Wonderful views from roof terrace. Helpful staff. Hotel full of character.
Review 107:Very limited lunch menu and staff not overly friendly.
Review 108:Amazing setting with great views and very tranquil
Review 109:I ask for high floor and they put me on the second one
Review 110:Friendly stuff, wide room, very clean, close to the boat trips
Review 111:Old style elegant hotel
Review 112:ants in the room
Review 113:Location near the lake. Quiet rooms. Garden and swimming pool. Friendly staff.
Review 114:Stayed before and will stay again. A classic, old-school hotel. They don't make like like this anymore.
Review 115:Great location, very good breakfast & the staff were really helpful, especially on reception.
