Reviews for Tokiwaya
Review 1:Nozawa is a delightful, picturesque village which is easily accessible by the shinkansen to the new Ilyama station with a bus directly outside for the 10 minute journey to the village. This ryokan was charming with very sweet staff. The Japanese breakfast and the hot ancient baths were a real treat. A very convenient location a short block from the bus station and some wonderful little cafes and restaurants nearby. Snowboarding although towards the end of the season was just an enticement to return in the middle of the winter season.
Review 2:The building does need maintenance in parts.
Review 3:Wifi in all the rooms. Japanese experience. In the midlle of lovely old town. (Not at the slopes!) Very good, and very hot, onsen. Ski room with all the facilities, so you can wax your ski's, and the skiroom is heated so your stuff dries out.
Review 4:We didn't realise the time breakfast was served so we were woken by a phone call at 7:30am telling us breakfast was ready and waiting! Shower would be better with more water pressure.
Review 5:This was our first time skiing. The staff explained everything we would need and recommended the best rental shops, gave us tickets for discounts etc. They even gave us gloves, lift pass holders and wellies to borrow for free. The restaurant is amazing. Very Japanese! You get breakfast in your own private room. Both the western and Japanese breakfasts are beautifully presented, tasty and huge. They change each day too. We had a private room which was very spacious with a little snug area with comfy chairs (easier on the limbs if you aren't used to sitting on the floor) to watch the snow from. The rooms had a fridge, tea making facilities, bath, shower, TV, kotatsu and plenty of storage. Hotel staff make up your futon and take it down for you so it you aren't sure how to make one you have no need to worry. The lobby area has free coffee and cold water and plenty of info about the local area. The onsen at the hotel is lovely. The hotel is right next door to the most famous onsen in town but we didn't want to go out in the snow when we could keep warm inside the hotel and use their onsen. Great location, just two minutes to the Yu-road, the moving walkway to the slopes. If you arrive by bus it's just a couple of minutes from the bus stop. Plus it's close to lots of good restaurants. The hotel staff gave us recommendations not in the guide books so we could guarantee a table if it was crowded. The people of Nozawa Onsen speak some of the best English we have encountered in Japan so it's a great resort to get the Japanese feel without the language barrier.
