Reviews for Hotel Oriental

Review 1:The food was not brillliant it could do with a little more thought at times. And they need to also sort the smells coming from the toilet in the bathroom...

Review 2:The location is ideal away from all the bustle. But also not too far to walk from everything.

Review 3:Breakfast was ok if you just wanted cold food. Cooked food was awful, croissants were sad excuses for pastry, coffee was undrinkable, so for all the coffee lovers out there, step AWAY from the coffee, surprising for a four star. Had opted for the bed and breakfast package, in hindsight I shouldn't have bothered. There's a nice little cafe down the street, (head right coming out hotel main door) that does breakfast, treated ourselves one morning.

Review 4:Location is lovely, quiet, but overlooking beach, and near the lovely marina. I know some people have mentioned the steps down (and up) to the beach a problem, and for anyone elderly or with mobility problems I can see why that would be an issue, although it didn't bother us. Had a lovely bedroom, huge comfortable bed.

Review 5:Different staff at check out who person who checked me out hardly spoke not even to ask had I enjoyed my stay which most places do .

Review 6:Great and helpful staff at check in and provided me with excellent room., with all day sun on terrace.

Review 7:If i was to be very picky, the breakfast could have been better for a 4* hotel...eg we went down at 9.30 and there was no eggs left.

Review 8:Booked this hotel for one night to celebrate my partner's 50th birthday. Really enjoyed our stay. Payed extra for full frontal beach view and that is what we got...no problems. My partner received a cake and drink of Taylor's Port on the house via room service which was a nice surprise. We ate in the hotel which was an excellent buffet and was entertained by Fado music whilst we dined.

Review 9:Stunning view from balcony, pleasant, friendly staff, and good and plentiful choice at breakfast. Very comfortable room. Food also excellent at the evening buffet.

Review 10:Parking can be very difficult....but not impossible!

Review 11:LOVE this hotel! It's an oasis in the middle of madness! Lovely, spacious rooms....good size bathrooms too. Sea view rooms are fabulous!

Review 12:Everything was great but staff could have been a little more friendly and would suggest the bar remain open while there are plenty of customers who would like to continue drinking & chatting.

Review 13:Beautiful Hotel, great location, excellent beach + pool, super style interior & exterior.

Review 14:One minor point was that lighting in the rooms could have been brighter. Too dull to write at the desk - might be allright for honeymoon couples but not for mature clients. (Many hotels have this failing !) Car parking was limited

Review 15:Very friendly and helpful staff. Good food particularly at breakfa Very spacious and comfortable rooms.

Review 16:Breakfast was very standard, low quality and variety. Although all reception staff was kind the service was not always fully satisfactory .

Review 17:Panoramic views, its location close to the beach

Review 18:We had booked a full frontal ocean view with booking.com but when we arrived we were told we wouldn't be able to get that room until the next day after breakfast. After breakfast became after check out which then became 2:30. We were only there for 4 days so this was very inconvenient having to always check back in. Room they gave us didn't have a safe in it so we were walking around with our valuables and passports until we got our room. Only a 15 Euro discount was going to be applied. Which was only the difference in the room rates. Had to speak to the manager and they finally agreed to offer 50 euro more for the inconvenience. Wi fi only worked sporadically and you had to be standing in a certain spot in the room in order to get it and then it would shut off. Very frustrating!! Also there was a sewer smell in the bathroom that was not very pleasant. Advertised as luxury but seems old and tired.

Review 19:The bed was very comfortable, the air conditioning was great and the hotel was generally quiet.

Review 20:Deceiptful staff- we did not get the full frontal room we booked- wewere given a side sea view which is not what we specifically requested.Upon arrival my partner was specifically advised by the receptionistthat we were to be given the correct room we had booked. At no timeduring the initial process were the Hotel going to either admit orcredit us (compensate) for the room change. It wasn't until wequeried & complained did "negotiations commence" We werevery disappointed to hear they had overbooked- they blamed the"systems used by all the search providers" eg booking.com whomwe used We were shown to our room- unpacked then realised that the PatioDoors would not lock- we then spent a further 30 minutes waiting for the'maintenance team' to fix doors- we could not leave the room Wefurther complained to the manager about this and suggested that weshould not have been told the room "was ready" when in fact itwasn't- The manager refused to offer any further compensation orindeed and apologies for this- he did in fact suggest that the room hadbeen given to us 30mins earlier than officially stated!!- Not a good start-whilst the room was ok- it wasn't what we wanted for our short breakwhich was supposed to be a "special anniversary" hence thebest room- Had we been made aware of the overbooking in good time- weprobably would have sourced alternative accommodation elsewhere. This issomething that both the hotel and booking.

Review 21:Lovely elevated position at better end of resort. Lovely breakfast- veryneatly presented- very calm atmosphere- good pool a little on the coolside. Room (refurbished) very well finished

Review 22:Only thing i was not happy about was the fact my room was not overlooking the pool.

Review 23:The staff are very friendly and helpfull, and the pool area is great

Review 24:The WiFi was really really poor, I would rather pay and get a decent service. The poolside service was patchy at times. Also a minibar advertised was not in room.

Review 25:Staff were great, good position at right end of beach. Property is really nice, rooms and bathrooms are excellent size and decorated really well. Pool area is excellent with fantastic views. Although most rooms have side ocean view is amazing and the balcony on our room Was great. Fado dinner was good too.

Review 26:It is unacceptable for a 4-star hotel to only have 10 parking spaces for cars when it has more than 60 rooms! The hotel is situated in front of the beach which is nice but there's a discoteque at the beach that does not stop the music until 6 am! I paid 500 euros for 2 rooms, I didn't have space for my car and could not sleep! Horrible location.

Review 27:No parking, some dinner staff unfriendly and impolite

Review 28:Ocean view, room was clean, cleaning staff was friendly, easy access to the beach, prime area close to restaurants and entertainment

Review 29:Very nice staff, good location, clean and we received a free upgrade for a wonderful, renovated room with seaview. The hotel is small which can be an advantage, it is on a cliff but you can directly walk down a stair to a nice sandy beach. In the close surrounding area are a lot of shops, restaurants and bars. All in all a wonderful experience. We can only recommend the hotel to other guests!

Review 30:Nothing, hotel was perfect wud love to return if we can!

Review 31:Fabulous location, beautiful quiet hotel, excellent helpful, respectful staff, wonderful bar/pool snack bar, great cocktails & sangria!! Free wifi coverage in & out but sufficient for checking in at home, bank etc. consistent coverage not essential as we were on holiday. We had 4 nights away without our kids. There were children staying in the hotel, but mostly very young or older. Never noticed or heard them much which suited us as this was a first break away on our own, so was very relaxing and peaceful. Though if you are looking for a faster pace then just 500 metres from hotel is the "strip" which comes alive at night. Did'nt have an evening meal in the hotel as we liked going to different restaurants each night, but always returned to the quiet ambience of the hotel bar overlooking the ocean for a few more night caps!!

Review 32:They tried to put it in the wrong room the Wi-Fi never worked at all some of to staff were helpful the food in general and the restaurant was total garbage potential to be a really nice hotel

Review 33:Actually when you stop and think not that much maybe the location and the view

Review 34:Wi fi Was quite poor and intermittent. That's the only negative about this lovely hotel.

Review 35:Location of hotel is excellent. Close to beach, with fabulous views. A short stroll to lots of restaurants. Staff are friendly and helpful. We stayed on a B and B basis, so I can't comment on food.

Review 36:Breakfast is quite poor, odour at night in Portimao is unberable, lot of discussions till we received the room in not quite a olite manner

Review 37:Location, view from room, garden, clean, beach is really close

Review 38:breakfast is terrible.. overcooked scrabled egg, ham cooked to look like bacon, cheap cannes sausages and dubious brown beans. The juices taste synthetic and the coffee degusting, clearly breakfast is produced to a low budget:(

Review 39:Great position on beach, lovely room and very clean.

Review 40:Staff customer service wasn't the best and the breakfast below standard. Also we rented the room with the kitchen so I could sterilise my daughters bottles and the stovetop took 2 hours to boil. Imagine cooking on it.

Review 41:The room was fantastic - view was great - pool and outdoor lounges perfect location, it was on the quiet end of the strip and walking distance to the hussle bustle.

Review 42:Wifi was a challenge.

Review 43:Outstanding location right on the beach and a very pleasant pool with scenic views. The hotel is walking distance to every type of shop. The premises is clean and the rooms were very comfortable.

Review 44:It is hard to find a dislike but wifi poor only good in reception and price of drink in bar expensive in relation to surrounding bars etc.

Review 45:The staff all over the hotel are so nice and helpful, the vicinity to and private walkway to the fabulous beach excellent. Breakfast each morning Excellent. Room cleaned each day with a great view. Will be back .

Review 46:One of the front desk managers was quite rude and not helpful at all (bald/guy). Bathrooms missing some amenities such as soap, kleenex. Wi-fi is awful.

Review 47:Loved the architectecture, rooms & bathrooms have been beautifully renovated & great location. Most ofthe staff were great - especially Claudia, one of the waitresses.

Review 48:Location is great - just by the beach and has direct access. Rooms are of good size and decorated nicely (modern oriental) - I also like the modern bathroom. Room rates are low in June so I think I got a good deal. Staff are friendly and helpful.

Review 49:Difficult to complain about this hotel at all but maybe to vary the hot breakfast offer

Review 50:The hotel is very comfortable and quiet but also convenient to the beautiful beach, great restaurants and the town. The news stairs to the beach is great.

Review 51:The wifi was pretty bad in our room and a lot of the rooms' bathroom windows opened onto the corridor which emitted a few suspect 'smells'.

Review 52:The hotel had an amazing pool/garden which looked out over the stunning beach of Praia da Rocha. We stayed in a partial sea view room which was great as we could still see the sea and was west facing so we enjoyed sunset views.

Review 53:Coffee cups and wine glasses not cleaned with tea still in the cups on several days even after compainig to front desk. Buffet dinner.

Review 54:Proximity to resteraunts bars and shops with private access directly to the beach

Review 55:Staff not at reception when arrived at desk and took five minutes for some one to come out!! Same at pool bar we had to go and find someone to get us a drink!!!

Review 56:Lovely rooms excellent location!!

Review 57:Rooms are old, dated, worn out, grimy and run down. Very disappointed. Was going to stay with our wedding party in July. This will not be happening now. Cancelling all rooms!!!

Review 58:Location is good.

Review 59:WiFi was a bit rubbish....

Review 60:Wonderful setting. Beautiful view of the whole beach. Great garden with sunbeds, tables and umbrella's. The bed and pillows where the most comfy I've ever experienced.

Review 61:We booked the most expensive room in the hotel, and our view was not "seafront" -- we saw more of the road than the ocean. The hotel was barely booked. Also, the hotel did not offer any kid-friendly amenities other than having a pool and a small play area for toddlers.

Review 62:The room was very large for European standards, and the hotel's decor was nice. It also offered direct access to the beach and nightlife, and had a quiet, private pool and lounge area. Free breakfast buffet was pretty good as well.

Review 63:Would have liked more coat hangers, needed for extended stay. Had some ants in kitchen area, but cleaning staff used spray and this did the trick.

Review 64:Used hotel January/February every year since 2001, apart from when it was closed in winter for refurbishments. Large rooms, beautiful location, excellent staff.

Review 65:Free wi-fi was a joke which required logging on each time with very slow speed. .Expensive high speed on offer.

Review 66:Excellent decor with comfortable bed.Walk in shower vast improvement on the old shower bath.

Review 67:Slow wi-fi , no indoor pool, mini bar fridge very small, no coffee in room -just tea for one day

Review 68:Beautiful big room with sea view, large LCD tv with lots of English channels, great breakfast overlooking beach. Moorish decor very appealing and loved the walk in shower

Review 69:The local council was back filling the cliffs right outside our bedroom window which started at 8.00am till 5.00pm we did have a word with the reception who did offer to change our room, but luckily the work stopped after 3 days.

Review 70:The staff were very helpful, the food we had an evening meal on our first night which was excellent. the location was spot on.

Review 71:No cooker or micrwave in the kitchen . Had to request an electri kettle as hotel only provide a whistle kettle but the hob rings took half an hour to heat up and I think it would have been time to come home before the whistle achieved enough steam to blow. I like my cup of tea.

Review 72:breakfast typical Portuguese, plenty of choice but not as good as English fare. Inadequate supply of self catering facilities. Kettle to be heated on the hob - not electric.

Review 73:stylish building, helpful staff, closeness to beach and other facilities

Review 74:Only one T bag in the room asked for more (or coffee) told No Coffee..T bags did arrive....but then realised there was no milk anyway! The room was supposed to be a Deluxe room, Pointless to have the kettle etc..Breakfast was very poor, hardly anything hot, and we went down before 10am...and the Hotel was very quiet..also

Review 75:Location was excelllent staff on reception very helpful. Our room was very large, and very comfortable with a nice side sea view.

Review 76:Evening meal main course not always to our taste, but perhaps we chose the wrong thing. Only about 10 car park spaces outside the hotel, but plenty in adjacent street so not really a problem.

Review 77:Location-private access to the beach a big bonus.Very spacious (garden) room with large balcony & superb view. Plenty of storage space & good sized bathroom with toiletries replenished daily. Nice gardens & pool. Breakfast - self service with good choice throughout our 4 night stay. Wine with dinner reasonably priced. All staff very friendly. Lots of shops/bars/eating places nearby.

Review 78:The general area is dominated by high rise hotels which is a pity. Some friends complained it was noisy although not the case at the oriental.

Review 79:Low rise and on the beach..Friendly efficient service.

Review 80:Free Wi-fi connection was poor on the upper floor rooms. Strong Wi-fi on ground floor only.

Review 81:Rooms / En-suite facilties etc Room view (beach / sea front) Breakfast Room service Concierge

Review 82:having to leave

Review 83:liked all the refurbished rooms, all modern and clean. complete with kettle etc, breakfast until 10.30am lovely selection. this has been upgraded to a high standard.Far improved on our last 3 stays

Review 84:The wifi isnt great in the rooms and breakfast is only average.

Review 85:Amazing hotel, best in praia da rocha. Great service, rooms and location. Lovely pool and excellent access to the beach. Hotel staff couldnt do enough to help us.

Review 86:Hate that people reserve sun lounges at 8.00 in the morning and then don't use them for hours. Hotel policy is that you cannot do that but no one heeds it and hotel staff don't police that policy.

Review 87:Loved the location. Breakfast was fantastic. Plenty of space in the room. All in all it was an excellent hotel and we will be back.

Review 88:They could give a higher standard of free wifi but that is splitting hairs!

Review 89:Everything! It is truly a fantastic hotel..... well worth the few extra quid

Review 90:The rooms were very luxurious, the staff were very polite and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. The pool area looked onto the beach and was very well maintained, everything about this hotel was excellent

Review 91:No parking facilities, kid's beds in family room were disappointing for such a high price - it was ok for the two nights we stayed, but for longer visits unacceptable. Staff was friendly but a bit rigid for a holiday atmosphere.

Review 92:Location was excellent, kids loved the pool, we loved the settings around the pool, nice view from room. Design of the Hotel is nice.

Review 93:wifi poor some barstaff quite grumpy and did not appear to want to serve pool bar service sometimes was very slow pool bar which has evening sun closes at 8 and the other bar has no sun - could not see why softdrinks - size of - cans only at the pool bar not in main bar glass in main bar - smaller measure, seems petty charge for pool towels some of the rooms have been refurbished with a more modern feel. We had 2 rooms for 9 days both older styles - a bit worn bathroom toiletries were only replenished twice we had to ask for soap charge for lock for room safe - old fashioned and rare that a hotel charges for this anymore Could do with a display area for tourist attractions / information at reception. staff were very helpful when approached for any but would be nice to have something to browse through

Review 94:location fantastic - particularly direct access to the beach green area for sunbathing receptionist extremely friendly and helpful and Carlos the barman wasabsolutely the best member of staff - always smiling and helpful overall decor of the hotel particularly the reception / hallways and restaurant beds very comfortable private balcony brilliant breakfast buffet good lunch options very reasonably priced cushions on poolside sun loungers - always plenty of loungers available

Review 95:The frist week rooms were cleaned very well every day, but the other week it seemed that a couple of days rooms were made up in a rush or very reluctantly - even the bins were not emptied once, the dust was clearly visible on all surfaces, and we found a big toe nail on the floor (definitely not ours, we do pedicure in beauty saloons) and that was disgusting. One of the reception ladies (the blond one with glasses) was quite indifferent and impolite, miss NO-Smile and No-Hello. And the last thing - to me breakfast seemed quite poor and untasty, even the hard-boiled eggs were overdone (too dry). Omeletts were often too hard and cold, sausages and cheese tasted like paper, no vegetables at all!!!! but still, it is possible to find something to eat, so acceptable. To compare - in a cheap 3-star Lisbon hotel the choice was much wider and tasted much better

Review 96:The Hotel is well-located and all the rooms have either side or direct ocean views. They are big, furniture new, all facilities functioning well. Some of the staff are very helpful and polite. There are also Fado evenings and some other events to entertain visitors. Wifi worked relatively well

Review 97:Not a lot to complain about. The wi fi although free, was slow at 126 Kbits/ sec. But all the local bars offered must faster free wi fi if you were that desperate. The steps down to the beach (about 50) we're a bit steep making this a bit of a non option for the less mobile.

Review 98:The Oriental is a lovely mid size hotel. Our room was a good size with a large balcony overllooking the beach. The staff were very helpful in all respects and the food (we had half board package) was good quality and varied. Even compared to local restaurants it was good value. We would certainly recommend it and will probably return.

Review 99:Rubbish wi-fi! Room number 007 suffers from being the door from the hotel to the pool or beach....and it SLAMS shut every time it's used!...maybe a door restrainer (or whatever they are called!) could be used to ease the SLAM!

Review 100:GREAT location! In the middle of mayhem! BOTH ends of the "strip" are much busier and nosier...this lovely hotel was an oasis between the two....which was handy for eating, drinking and people watching!....then, head back for peace! Lovely beach facilities too!

Review 101:A sauna / steam room would have been good. At this price I would have expected to have safe provided in the price not as an extra add on at €3 per day. No tea / coffee making facility in the room but then again it was half board so cant really complain. pool side lounge on the pricey side. Not a place for the kids or late teens / early adulthood where partying in more the focus.

Review 102:very friendly staff, loads of room and sun beds outside, breakfast which was always very varied and plentiful on on the terrace, quiet. Would seek room 032 again, ground level side view of beach, sun in the morning warm in the evening and lovely terrace. Rooms cleaned and towels / sheets changed daily. large screen TV with over 50 channels. No bath in room but shower excellent and loads of hot water. €1.50 to rent poolside / beach towel (paid each time the towel was changed) saved on luggage allowance. Great location for restaurants, boardwalks in the evening, right on the beach - 53 gently rising steps - Overall excellent experience

Review 103:The service, the waiters, the food was shocking, and you didn't get what was advertised....false advertising! Terrible wifi couldn't even connect... The picture dont reflect reality! Very shoddy in general.

Review 104:The location

Review 105:Very relaxing

Review 106:Lovely modern rooms

Review 107:Location

Review 108:Bar closes too early.breakfast ok, pastries comme ce, comme ca.

Review 109:Room nice size. Bathroom good size but window ooens to insude common courtyard. Weird.

Review 110:no parking

Review 111:good location value for money excellant breakfast

Review 112:The staff from the gardener up to the manager were all first class

Review 113:Bathroom was very tired looking. We were virtually in the dungeon of the hotel and I personally didn't like it.

Review 114:Location was great.

Review 115:The breakfast and food options in general were terrible. Also the bar didn't have much to offer.

Review 116:The room was amazing and very clean

Review 117:Internet not good . Buffet food and BBQ was very poor.

Review 118:Location and room

Review 119:Wifi was hit and miss needs to be better

Review 120:Location and the staff were very helpful

Review 121:Everything was very good

Review 122:Perfect location & rooms with sea view, very clean, very good service with super-friendly staff, very delicious food

Review 123:Quality of Hotel, location, location, location.

Review 124:Breakfast and buffet

Review 125:Location and staff

Review 126:hard matress and foam pillows

Review 127:right on the beach

Review 128:Loved this hotel, location and views from it are amazing. We will definitely be back!

Review 129:Wi-Fi, lack of more close by parking places.

Review 130:Staff, location, overall cleaning and the theme dinner (Fado and Italian)

Review 131:BAD smell from sewer.

Review 132:Booked full frontal beach view and was given a different room with side view

Review 133:Hotel is located well and very pretty

Review 134:Exceptionally friendly and welcoming reception staff.. All staff went the extra mile to help... Lovely rooms and excellent sea view

Review 135:The smell from the drains

Review 136:Evening meals disappointing. Not much atmosphere or evening entertainment.

Review 137:Clean, friendly staff, lovely location and good breakfasts.
