Reviews for Palace Hotel do Bussaco
Review 1:Thank you very much for that kind of hotel there! People come here especially on trips. To live in such a place and in such a work of art a great happiness! Excellent restaurant! I can imagine how difficult it is to maintain such historic value and the park. Is it worth it to pay attention to minor issues? If possible, be sure to come again
Review 2:The rooms would need some maintainance works
Review 3:Nice location in the middle of the wood. Worth the visit as it is very unique palace/hotel where you could sleep at fear price. Good breakfast
Review 4:It is a tired place. Do not expect too much from the rooms - furniture has seen better days, doors do close but do not keep outside sounds from coming in, of course you will hear your neighbours. I would recommend to come for a lunch, tour the building, have a walk in the park and then drive back to Coimbra. Staff is used to people coming and going, so they are polite but not really friendly nor helping. I booked two double rooms, got two twin ones and a stupid smile from front desk.
Review 5:The building is a feast for eyes, both outside and inside, the park outside is wonderful, restaurant is OK but (of course) overly expensive. Definitely worth a visit if you never stayed in palace before, certainly will make some good memories.
Review 6:Superb opportunity and value for money that is sadly unappreciated by everybody who complains about some irrelevant, minor details that "spoil" their snooty 5-star expectations. Thank god this place is a tiny bit rundown, which adds great charm and lets us, who actually can appreciate it, appreciate it affordably! Thank god this place is so full of character and isn't "updated" and converted to a posh and insanely expensive retreat that only a few could afford! Loved every moment of it - the emptiness in the off-season, the comfort of the room, its outdated yet photogenic furniture, the absolutely scrumptious breakfast. WiFi worked perfectly fine in the room and all public areas and was fast. Baby cot was available. The surrounding park is magnificent.
Review 7:Food.
Review 8:Archtecture. Empty strangeness. Decor. Furniture. Weathered and well-loved look of everything. Dilapidated elegance. Bathroom. Radiators. Huge balcony. Garden. Forest. History. Blind cat. Staff.
Review 9:Amazing building, views and grounds and a fantastic breakfast. If you like corporate 5 star then forget it ! This is a place of character and faded granduer .The odd bit of peeling paint is more than compensated for..We loved it.
Review 10:The degradation of the room. Unacceptable to classify this hotel with 5 stars. Windows and doors in a lamentable status.
Review 11:The location and the personal sympathy.
Review 12:Staff kindly upgraded us from a rather dim, cramped room to an impressive "turret" room with huge windows and view. However, bathroom was still older, tub peeling and discolored--the down side of these grand old hotels.
Review 13:Extraordinary, unique, "over the top" royal hotel, with lovely public spaces and loads of history. Off season rates were very reasonable for a memorable stay. Staff very professional (including one gentleman who has worked there 46 years!) and the forest walk (via sacra) leads past moving sculptures to a splendid calvary and outlook.
Review 14:the restaurant is very expensive and the dishes are not that good. breakfast is rich (for Portugal)
Review 15:its a palace. an old one, so no hi tech stuff but charming. a good walk in the palace halls and gardens got the superior room. a VERY large room and bath.
Review 16:Breakfast isn't as special as it could be for a place like this. The evening meal was OK, but only just & I doubt that Luso would offer much better. The fish soup was pretty dire (lots of bones, little fish & not much taste) &, having said so, we would've expected the price to be deducted. Get the restaurant sorted!
Review 17:It's definitely worth staying here for one night but we wouldn't stay here again. One night is enough for the experience. You stay here for the history, access to the grounds, the main building, the bar area, which are stunning. Our bedroom, at least ( a cheaper option), was a bit run-down but we had expected this & it was perfectly adequate but nothing special. If this place were brought back to its former glory, it'd cost 200 Euros a night & people couldn't afford to stay so they shouldn't be so critical & should enjoy the chance to experience a slice of history. Sr Saul (the manager?) is a gem, having worked here since 1974 & still clearly enthusiastic.
Review 18:In restaurant works waittess with short grey hair, she was rude and impolite. We were afraid to ask about something. She made a lot or noise and atmosphere in army. But others were lovely! Maybe breakfast coffee isn't the best(very bitter)
Review 19:Great atmosphere, delicious food, beautiful garden.
Review 20:We didn't like so much the porter more or less begging for a tip, insisting of taking our one tiny suitcase. We wouldn't have minded the waiters being less stiff. The pillow was the cheapest most uncomfortable pillow ever.
Review 21:Absolutely marvelous hotel, the building inside and out breathtakingly beautiful. Fantastic garden/forest, and adjacent monastery. Dinner was super!
Review 22:the rooms and facilities are very dated. no hot water whatsoever on the second day.
Review 23:an adventure. the building is fantastic, with the museum attached for added interest. the 'wellington' museum is nearby as well. in good weather the grounds are well worth a visit. the restaurant is very good, with the wine list exemplary
Review 24:We were disappointed at our so called superior room. Nothing superior except the size of room. No desk, no minibar, only table with one armchair were present (where is the second armchair/chair ?). It was double room for two people. And we felt that no soundproof at all (if honestly soundproof really was not promised, neither minibar, desk). But anyway Bussaco Palace is worth for staying there.
Review 25:We enjoyed staying in Bussaco Palace. Really beautiful place. Palace, garden interiors of Palace are very attractive. Excellent breakfast was served in very nice dining room.
Review 26:Stunning location and hotel, great character, wonderful food and funny..a charming Portuguese 5 star (don't expect sleek modern luxury) its the real thing..
Review 27:Property in very poor shape. Carpets worn and stained. Beds uncomfortable. Needs paint and attention to detail.
Review 28:Interesting property with intriguing history.
Review 29:The staff was rude and we were stopped a few times and told we could not walk around even though we were staying there; then received apologies. The room was not authentic except for the bathroom which was ancient. It was grimmy. It was definitely not a 5 star hotel. We paid more to get the romantic package. My husband reminded them since there was nothing in the room when we arrived. They said they do it after dinner for turndown. We went out to dinner and still nothing when we returned; turndown happened. No rose peddles on the bed, no champagne, and no chocolate fondue. We asked about it and then they brought the champagne and fondue up. Very poor...
Review 30:I like the location and the fact that it was indeed a palace.
Review 31:Rooms were a bit dated.
Review 32:Beautiful grounds, the castle looked like something out of fairy tale. Their specialty poached pears served during breakfast were quite good.
Review 33:Worn rooms in need of renovation. Some are quite small, but we got lucky....
Review 34:If you ever wanted to stay in a palace, this is it. As a hotel guest you are free to roam the amazing interior of the castle which day visitors are not allowed to do. Make sure you make a reservation for a very good dinner in the amazing dining room, this is part of the experience. Great breakfast, too. I loved the stuffy old hallways with original wood paneling and old photographs - hopefully that will never be changed. All in all - despite the less than perfect rooms - a wonderful experience and one of the highlights of our 3 weeks in Portugal. Nice walks in the surrounding forest.
Review 35:However the hotel needs some building work and therefore it is no good value for money.
Review 36:As you can read in all the reviews for this hotel, the location - Mata do Bussaco - is simply amazing and the Palace has a lot of history. The restaurant food is also good.
Review 37:The room was old and dingy the beds are old very uncomfortable the tvwas a 1980 model tube 7 inches no English channels no ac Verydisappointed this a 2 star hotel and definitely not a 5 star Wantrefund please
Review 38:Nothing
Review 39:When you get to the rooms it's like you have suddenly been transported to another hotel. The rooms are disgusting and desperately need renovation. The plumbing is extremely noisy. Our bathroom had an insect infestation. The paint is peeling. The beds and bedding seem to be 30 years old and are horribly uncomfortable. The towels are extremely rough. The tv appears to be at least 30 years old. The restaurant is grossly overpriced and has subpar food.
Review 40:The ground floor, the gardens, and the outside of the building are beautiful.
Review 41:The decor everywhere is extremely tired, the bathroom especially was long overdue modernisation or a through replacement program - it is just not on to have a badly stained bath and fittings and fixtures that need scheduled maintenance. Insufficient staff in the restaurant made for an unnecessarily slow service.
Review 42:The facade is the very best asset.
Review 43:The rooms, staff and restaurant were very below average The food was awful with very mediocre service The rooms were cold and spare
Review 44:The outside and gardens were beautiful
Review 45:The room was quite dated and paint was peeling quite a lot and the doors to the rooms were quite old and rickety, were some money invested into this hotel, given the basis of what is here, to simply update or restore things it would be considered a luxury resort by lots of peoples standards.
Review 46:The surrounding forest is exceptionally beautiful, the breakfast was vast, delicious and staff excellent. One of the most beautiful locations I have stayed in Portugal Staff spoke, Portuguese and English Fluently and other languages also, but that is standard in Portugal despite not being a requirement by most places, would definitely recommend a stay here and would return despite a few niggles with the age of the room and it being a little run down and aged. Bathroom the size of another room and a closet I was able to walk in to, all for less than 200 a night.
Review 47:The room, the beds, the total lack of comfort. The broken, missing or delay dated facilities.
Review 48:The building and its setting are beautiful beyond description.
Review 49:The rooms need a little updating and the external structure of the palace needs maintenance
Review 50:Bussaco is an exquisite choice of hotel. The setting can only be described as breathtaking. The food and service is outstanding
Review 51:Our room (and bathroom and balcony) was very poor and needs to be renewed. The garden also needs to be improved.
Review 52:Common areas such as the verandah, the bar and the living room are too beautiful!
Review 53:The location is in the middle of a beautiful forest. It was an old Royal place with great paths in the woods. Nicely kept Flower gardens. If you have a car it Easy to drive to other Location like Coimbra and Figuera da Foz.
Review 54:The staff at the restaurant of the hotel was not the most friendly despite the excessive price they charge
Review 55:The castle is really impressive and worth a night.
Review 56:Bedrooms and bathrooms very faded. Staff tried hard but not always very professional and whole place inadequately staffed. Breakfast disappointing.
Review 57:Stunning location and building. Public spaces very beautiful. Lot of wow factor.
Review 58:It's unacceptable the current deteriorating process of the Hotel. A long and urgent refurbishment is required for this unit.
Review 59:The Palace and the surrounding forest make this one of the most wonderful and marvelous places to visit.
Review 60:The lunch and dinner menu could have more choices.
Review 61:The breakfast was one of the best I've had, even compared to the St Regis (keep it quiet, don't want to lose Starwood points). The combination of forest plus old stone work is exquisite. I was surprised that at night there were no mosquitos.I will go back if I get a chance.
Review 62:Some of the furniture is a bit nondescript
Review 63:The building has a magical setting and is an amazingly atmospheric place to stay with stunning gardens. Bathrooms are a little old fashioned but that is part of the charm. Breakfast on the terrace overlooking the formal garden was great.
Review 64:The location and surrounding grounds are the only reason to visit the location but as a hotel it must be dismissed. The building is totally lacking in updates, from repairs to the cracked ceilings, flaking paint to electrical wiring which renders one scared of being electrocuted or starting a fire. We were upgraded to a “superior” room which had one electrical outlet, the lamps were connected by extension cords under the bed, the bathroom had one non-ground-protected plug and the switch for the ceiling light was hung over the headboard. The carpets thought-out the hotel were worn-out and dirty. Bed sheets were clean but were covered by blankets which were not covered nor in duvet type covers. There was no functional internet at the hotel – which the staff finally admitted to after 2 days trying to blame our computers etc. We were booked into a standard double room in the main hotel /castle building on the second floor which was very small and dilapidated and we could hear the person in the adjoining (?) room using the bathroom. Upon remarking on these items we were fortunately moved to another part the hotel. On the first evening we had dinner at the hotel which was expensive compared with other restaurants and hotels visited and the food was terrible. The duck was cold, the tenderloin was clearly not the correct cut and the vegetables were not edible. Breakfast was a buffet which was OK but the coffee was very bitter and there was no variation in the food. The hotel is in dire need of a total renovation. While it may have fit the bill for a 5 star facility when it opened more than 100 years ago it has not been kept up and it’s deceptive to advertise it is a hotel of any standing. It’s a historical sight but it’s not fit for habitation. Given the outdated electrical system and massive amount of old dry wood the hotel is a fire hazard and potential disaster.
Review 65:The staff was trying to be helpful but there was nothing they could do. We were not charged for 1 out of the 4 nights we stayed as they recognized the issues.
Review 66:Seems that staff has given up taking complaints. "There is water constantly running in bathroom!" "We have spider nets in our room!" Answer: "Oh really" ? And yes, the smell in room was overwhelming Given up
Review 67:the palacio Bussaco is a national monument located beautifully, for some unclear reason authorities and hotel mgmt do not invest in maintaining the building or the business. Works are urgent
Review 68:Just as a matter of correction, the hotel claims to be a 5 star establishment and it is only 3 star. It's priced as a 3 star and is good for that albeit in 5 star surroundings.
Review 69:The building, surrounding garden, walking in the woods, food and wait staff. Size of rooms
Review 70:The hotel could explore other facilities as gym, spa and planned activities
Review 71:The hotel is a museum live, all the furniture, decorations give us the sensations of being in the old times. A great experience
Review 72:Tiny antique TV (the night we stayed there there was the final game of the EUFA Championship, but it was impractical to watch it on the room TV). The furniture in the room is too old; you don't get a royal feeling from it like you get from the rest of the palace.
Review 73:The palace is extremely nice, with its beautiful garden and the woods around. Luso is a very short drive (we drove there for dinner). Breakfast was very good and rich.
Review 74:The dining room lacked atmosphere - the senior staff were very stuffy and formal. The trainees were more friendly possibly because they were nervous. There were too many coach tours.
Review 75:The place needs a gym and heated pool which I would think essential in a venue of this quality. The people on the door were nice especially the young one who I only saw once.
Review 76:room not soundproof at all - you can hear every single word from adjusted room even if speaking in low voice , breakfast , towels, bed , pillows- every single thing for 2* hotel Bookers dinner to se inside a d neves booking invernight
Review 77:outside view
Review 78:Dinner was pricey, but excellent; breakfast was the best I had in Portugal; walking around the gardens is lovely; the whole stay is a very unique experience.
Review 79:Poor and worn down facilities, poor bedding and pillows, poor breakfast. No coffe or tea facilities in rooms. Not 5 star at all!
Review 80:The location and view. Free parking. The idea of sleeping in a palace in the forest!
Review 81:Our room was fairly utilitarian, but the rest of the accommodation made up for it.
Review 82:The interior of the palace was sumptuous and gorgeous! It was over-the-top beautiful. Meals at the restaurant were fantastic. We loved our stay here.
Review 83:The Palace is not 5 start, very old and rundown, could be wonderful a outstanding place if someone came in and refurbished totally, the they could charge for 5 start rates.
Review 84:The dinner was outstanding as with the dining room staff
Review 85:The wifi signal was not sufficiently strong in the bedroom. There were quite dusty areas in the hotel. The soundproofing was bad (I could clearly hear people's chatting downstairs well after midnight. There were 2 rather lethal steps in the bathroom and the bedroom which could have been a severe hazard in the middle of the night! They should have been pointed out to us. Some staff were a bit mousy.
Review 86:The beautiful old tiles, the gardens, the grounds, the huge bedroom, the decor using period furniture, the extraordinary building itself
Review 87:I paid extra for a superior room with chocolate fondue and sparkling wine. This arrived after we had gone down to dinner, could not eat it or drink the wine - a total waste which caused an argument.
Review 88:The building, garden, forest
Review 89:A touch of luxury is needed to match official 5 star rating. Facilities are quite basic and furniture is quite old. But this is not so important for a great and unique place like this.
Review 90:This is a great and unique place to stay. Great park.
Review 91:If you are interested in watching tv and checking your email the whole time you are here, you may not like this hotel. Great for honeymooners!
Review 92:You feel like a royal staying here. One of a kind experience I would recommend to history buffs and architecture lovers especially. The gardens and surroundings are beautiful - don't miss out, and make sure you pay extra for a garden room. The other suites are even more beautiful I am sure!
Review 93:the rooms are tiny but you'll be outside most of the time
Review 94:The location is spectacular, there is no other alternative to live in the heart of Bussaco forest. It is a real hunting palace of the last Portuguese king, you will feel like living in a museum, but a bit shabby one You will have the unique possibility to enjoy the forest and its hidden treasures without day-time visitors in the morning or in the evening. The breakfast is great, dinner may seem a bit expensive. The garden is amazing, staff is friendly and helpful
Review 95:Small bed even for a superior room
Review 96:Great location, kind people, splendor of the public areas, marble vintage bathroom with huge metal bath-tub, excellent food and wine-list
Review 97:The rooms need some renovating,TLC and updating. One of us had to sleep on a cot and that didnt feel too regal.
Review 98:Walking around the shared area of the palace, forest and gardens. Enjoying the beauty of the palace and surrounding area.
Review 99:Wifi was disappointing: we had to speak to our children on skype in a public room which was restrictive and not much fun for other guests
Review 100:The magnificent hotel and grounds, the striking dining room and the excellent dinner
Review 101:This hotel is set in a fabulous location, staff were friendly and very professional and we were spoilt throughout our stay. Definitely go for the superior rooms - our bedroom was huge with a glass chandalier, the bathroom was substantial and we had our own private balcony. Not a lot more money to upgrade and worth every euro.
Review 102:Loved the architecture, the detail inside and old. Loves the antique furnshings and the size of the rooms. Loved the views. Loved the champagne breakfast. Loved their own wine!
Review 103:The rooms are rather tired and accepting the fact that they are in keeping with the turn of the century they do need a revamp. Quite a few small items not functioning correctly, bathroom light etc, outdated TV's in the 2 rooms we occupied.
Review 104:The architecture both externally and internally is wonderful and the location set in the midst of an ancient forest is superb. Dinner was very good and wine excellent of course. Breakfast not the best but adequate.
Review 105:Nothing specific to complain about, except for maybe the Wifi only being available in the salon downstairs and not in other spaces. The property was lovely and clean and the staff friendly but I didn't find it had any of the 'luxurious extras' that a five-star rating might lead you to expect.
Review 106:Refined, beautiful historical building, carefully maintained and still well heated.
Review 107:The A/C had broken down so our room was a bit cold, which was solved rapidly by the staff. The room itself was interesting and in good shape, although it has seen better days.
Review 108:The location is awesome although there is not many activities you can do around besides nature walks and day-trips to neighbouring places. The whole building is amazing and while worth the stay. The breakfast buffet is very varied and is served in an astonishing room that takes you back to the nobility ages.
Review 109:The whole place it's not 5 star and much wouldn't rate 3 stars in the UK. It's so far from anywhere that the trip is a stretch and local Luso is no attraction either. Our guess is poor in any season, though we went in late November.
Review 110:The Bucaco wine is excellent indeed in a class of its own but forget the idea of tasting the older wines as the cellar has been sold. Although we were fobbed off with a story that they had lost the cellar keys ! The food is good also but avoid the weekends when conferences will hamper your enjoyment considerably. You will be shunted to the annex, have no lounge facilities and wait for your food.
Review 111:We had a wonderful time at the Bussaco Palace. It is a truly remarkable place. The hotel itself is a work of art and one of a kind. We loved the palace and the many forest paths. The path to the high cross was our favorite -- remarkable views. Thank you!
Review 112:This period hotel is located in a stunning garden forest. Having a cocktail in the elaborate period bar feels like you are in an Agatha Christie novel - an experience not to be missed. When the electricity failed for a few minutes the barman brought round huge candlesticks and sitting amongst the ornate surroundings bathed in flickering candlelight, whilst drinking an expertly crafted Manhattan was perhaps the most atmospheric moment I have ever experienced in a hotel. I can't emphasise enough that this is a very special place, and if you are in the area you should try to spend a night here, and a day meandering around the remarkable grounds - the valley of the ferns is wonderful, and the viewpoints take your breath away.
Review 113:The amenities, service and room furnishings are almost comically bad for a 5-star hotel, and in no respect measure up to this category except in pretension. That said, it is a privilege to stay in this building. While an appreciation for camp helps (an example being the knight in full armor on the grand stairs with lit up eyeballs), I would stay there again anytime just to experience the incredible place that is absolutely beyond belief.
Review 114:The TV and the hair dryer did not work well. It would be better if they didn't exist.
Review 115:The palace and its surroundings are truly breathtaking. The dining and living room are really fantastic. Good staff. Great experience as a "return to the past", superb to understand how the nobility lived.
Review 116:Poor pillows; poor room lighting; very weak and intermittent WiFi; too much starch in the dining room; food very expensive and very bland.
Review 117:Location, property walks, price
Review 118:Asked for quiet room and they put me right next to elevator. Requested queen bed. Got twins
Review 119:Staying in a real palace. Very good breakfast. Excellent dinner
Review 120:Some of the rooms have not been renovated and are very bad. Even recently renovated suite did not have heat, required space heaters to stay warm on a cool night. Otherwise, renovated rooms are very nice.
Review 121:Location is amazing, interiors are stunning, restaurant excellent. Building is out of a fairy tale!
Review 122:A little bit in need of renovation.
Review 123:Staying in a hunting lodge in the middle of a forest cannot be compared to large commercial hotels. For what it is , the place is unique and very good.
Review 124:This time of year, too many busses; rooms need updating (peeling paint, etc.) WiFi only accessible within inches of entry door (not entire room). Room very dark and also no A/C available.
Review 125:We would have liked some olives or nice nibbles for our drink before dinner. The. Chips were old and ranced
Review 126:We were enthusiastic and amazed about the Palace itself and the beautiful forest
Review 127:The building, the forest, the food. The rooms are tired indeed but we took the cracks in the walls, peeling paint, cold water tap handle always coming off and falling into the tub, bathrobes with no belts nor slippers as part of the adventure, and did not let it spoil the overall fantastic experience a bit.
Review 128:Rooms are tired and dated. Carpet stained so they are not luxury by any means. We had access to a huge deck overlooking the maze which was tremendous. If you try to check in at 3pm be prepared to wait and find you room not ready..
Review 129:well Bussaco has to be the most amazing Palace building which makes for great photos! carvings and gargoyles adorn every pillar. The general areas are especially amazing. The gardens come into themselves once the hordes of coaches leave. We had the fixed menu which was fair value for the setting although expensive for Portugal but then it was worth paying for the ambience. Overall I would not have missed staying here.
Review 130:Late check in. We would have liked access to our room earlier than 3. But that is being picky, it was a wonderful stay.
Review 131:The beautiful building, the lovely grounds, the walks through enchanting forests with quirky grotto, pools, waterfalls, and the fact that it is so unspoilt
Review 132:Bathrooms very dated, Electrics antiquated, Décor was very tired. BBC World News was listed as being available but it was not. Warm breakfast was poor compared to other hotels we used on this tour.
Review 133:Character of building. It is worth one night to have enough time to have a good look around.. Convenient Location for a visit to Coimbra and Aveiro. The history of the building was fascinating. The micro climate have made the grounds worth visiting. There was adequate WiFi in public rooms but poor reception in the bedrooms.
Review 134:Room with a weird smell, very old and in bad conditions. It must have been a very good bedroom 40 years ago...Don't stay here until it is properly renovated...
Review 135:Friendly staff! Beautiful building. Beautiful park with lots of interesting trails to walk.
Review 136:Rooms would need refreshment, requires budget and eventually ends up in higher rates, and clientele shift. Feasible? Lack of tourist information: staff is very spare. No Marketing activities: why not engage students, that will have a pleasure and the creativity to fuel, and possibly generate revenue. (walking tour the park, explorations, inititations with forest wildlife...)
Review 137:everything: Restauration, top service. Location and the forest!
