Reviews for The African Reef

Review 1:The property needs a serious revamp. Over the years we have stayed we have seen the gradual drop in condition. The furniture and carpet in the room I stayed in required a serious clean. The bathroom needs a bench to put your toiletries. A ceiling fan in the bedroom would have been awesome.

Review 2:Unfortunately the restaurant wasn't open when we stayed there so we couldn't experience the awesome sunset ocean views for dinner but I understand it's open now.

Review 3:Great location, friendly staff, free upgrade to a newly renovated room and cheapest place in Geraldton, what else do you need.

Review 4:Black hair on shower tiles before I got in! Not that clean. Food took me back to boarding school days and very pricey for quality.

Review 5:Take-away breakfast pack.

Review 6:The hot water system works very slow. I have to wait more than 5 minutes for the hot shower.

Review 7:Clean room, nice and helpful staff, great beach view from the restaurant.

Review 8:location,cleanliness and good facilities made this a good choice for our overnight stay. we were also offered free upgrade to superior room with complimentary continental breakfast

Review 9:The kettle is rusty and could not boil water or make coffee or tea. Shower door has not handle inside the door and thus has to use creative ways to shut the door. The facilities is not well maintain.

Review 10:Near the town center

Review 11:The staff member on the reception desk when we arrived was very abrupt which I found a bit off putting.

Review 12:nice location by the sea & close to town. comfortable room.

Review 13:The staff didn't show any interest in making me feel welcome. The windows in the apartment haven't been cleaned for a long while, they were very, very dirty which really is a shame considering the sunset view and the fact that you cannot open the windows. The continental breakfast consisted of toast, vegemite or jam, instant coffee or tea. Nothing else. This place could be such a lovely location - it just seems that no one feels responsible. On my way back down the coast I stayed in a single room at the lovely backpacker place. Much better experience and not even half the price.

Review 14:The African Reef has a perfect location. The sunset view from there is amazing but that is about it.

Review 15:No clothes dryer in Laundry. Units a bit dated, needs an upgrade.

Review 16:Complementary continental breakfast. The ocean right at the back of units. Convenient location for travelling.

Review 17:Minor maintenance issues - vertical blinds on kitchen window not opening, towel rail loose in bathroom wall.

Review 18:Convenient location, comfortable beds, great staff, dinner in restaurant good quality.

Review 19:The apartment desperately needs a renovation. Lino floors were coming up at the edges, tiling on the bathroom floor was very uneven, the bathroom door needed replacing, shower leaked, and the table and chairs were rusty, you could feel the springs through the single mattress and the main bed needed replacing as we kept rolling into the middle. For the price we paid I would expect more!

Review 20:Staff were great. Apartment was clean.

Review 21:Could have had a bigger shelf for wet pack etc. in the bathroom near the wash basin, a bit pokey (the shelf that is)

Review 22:Great location, quiet, clean and comfortable

Review 23:I had no complaints with the stay at the resort.

Review 24:I liked the way the room was set out, bedroom, kitchen then ensuite, it was comfortable neat tidy well laid out, the staff were excellent from the room cleaner to the staff in the restaurant, the staff in the restaurant were very helpful with choice of drink and polite and very friendly, it is close to the beach and you get a chance to see a sunset when you are having your dinner.

Review 25:Continental Breakfast selection, and also but not a show stopper but it is nice to have the option of upgrade to a cooked breakfast

Review 26:Susie the Manager is a great front for the business, the staff were all great. My dinner was well presented and tasted lovely

Review 27:We had to phone the duty staff (at 1 pm) to open the office and get the key to the apartment. She said she had been asleep. The apartment itself was old and tired and looked as though it had been used for worker accommodation. One of the light bulbs was missing and the staff person said at first that she didn't think she had a replacement, as the lamp was really just for decoration. She eventually found a replacement when we said that we would have to go out ourselves to find one. It was the only source of lighting in the bedroom other than a very dim central light. The restaurant was not open for dinner. I really could not recommend the African Reef.

Review 28:Location

Review 29:I was in room 67 and there was no hair dryer in my room. The info book didn't even mention room 67. A chair so you could sit at the desk would be useful too.

Review 30:Room was newly renovated and very comfortable

Review 31:Kids beds were great. Queen size bed went in in the middle and squeaked every time we moved. Curtains were falling down.

Review 32:Evening meal was great. Lots of parking as had camper trailer on. Complimentary breakfast a bonus. Staff very friendly and helpful.

Review 33:If you hanker for a 1960s motel experience, but at 2015 price, this place is for you. Plain brick exterior walls, painted brick interior walls, tasteless decor. “Kitchenware” that doesn’t include a bottle opener. No Wi-fi. We didn’t try the restaurant ($7.50 for two slices of garlic bread, anyone?) No hot water at 6am (though this was quickly fixed). Let me assure the proprietors that nowhere on the European continent will breakfast (i.e the “Continental breakfast” offered) consist of self-made instant coffee or tea, orange juice, yoghurt, white sliced bread and plastic-encased spreads. Close to a nice beach on the southern fringe of town, but our room only had a view of a road.

Review 34:Close to a nice beach

Review 35:The T.V. reception was hopeless. No help there from the staff. A teatowel would be very handy.

Review 36:Our meal in the restaurant was great. The view we had with our breakfast and dinner was special.

Review 37:The bed was very uncomfortable. The breakfast was poor with little to choose from.

Review 38:Staff were friendly and welcoming. Easy as the meeting rooms were onsite and there was plenty of parking.

Review 39:Dreadful shower. No water pressure and water took an extremely long time to heat up. Terrible waste of water.

Review 40:Proximity to the beach for walking. Suites with balconies that overlook the beach. Receptionist responsive to our need for different bed set-up. Restaurant overlooking the ocean.

Review 41:Kettle had to be replaced and the shower drain blocked meaning a short shower or a flood. Breakfast very basic continental - no cooked option. Coffee was poor quality instant even in the restaurant at breakfast

Review 42:Good location on the beach and close to town

Review 43:The accommodation very dated, grubby looking, not homely at all. There was a wedding and we were told could not use restaurant or bar. Didn't feel safe here

Review 44:The pool and basic breakfast

Review 45:everything poor quality , bed uncomfortable, carper dirty, rear door locked with tec screw to prevent access as verandah had fallen down. Whole place rundown never visit again

Review 46:nothing

Review 47:The food at the restaurant was overpriced and really bad over cooked and tough The pool area is very sparse looking no plants not very appealing

Review 48:very friendly staff

Review 49:The beds are hard.

Review 50:The beach is beautiful. The pool was excellent. The meal at the restaurant was very nice and we got breakfast that we weren't expecting.

Review 51:Arrived at African reef resort to find it unattended and looking like a building site. I walked around to find nobody so called a phone number on a sign and someone met me at reception shortly afterwards. I asked if my Studio with Ocean view had an ocean view. I got told "If I stand on that side of the balcony you can see some of the ocean". Then I noticed my room was part of the building that was being held up by steel props as the 6 concrete pillars holding up a section of the building had blown apart as a result of concrete cancer. I asked if the restaurant was open as that was our major draw card in staying at the resort as I had heard it was good. I was told it was closed during my stay, obviously I was disappointed as this was not mentioned before or during my booking I asked to cancel the booking on the grounds that I believed the building was unsafe as I have great experience in the construction industry and would not want my partner getting hurt in any way. Further more the advertised restaurant was not open and we were told to walk down the road to the next hotel and use their facilities that didn't impress. After canceling my booking I was charged 50% off my stay, I believe if you cant offer what you are advertising you shouldn't expect someone to pay to stay, definitely not charge 50% if they choose to stay elsewhere.

Review 52:The price

Review 53:The Wi-Fi did not work, much to my daughter's disappointment. Joy to me for I think people should switch off.

Review 54:Very warm receptionist who received us well. The unit was immaculate and quite location.

Review 55:the beds were incredibly hard I slept on the couch for my two night stay.

Review 56:location, able to do laundry although no pegs. a clean pool for kids and seating area, good sized rooms. shower good.

Review 57:Rooms & bathroom are a little dated, could use a revamp. Balcony was held up by construction scaffolding supports. Not a great first impression safety wise. However, I did like it and I would stay again, perhaps not in the same room though.

Review 58:Price, room size, location, view, beach access. Staff were pleasant and welcoming. Overall a pleasant stay.

Review 59:Inadequate kitchen equipment and only a microwave. Tatty and unloved, old fashioned and dorm blocks right outside apartment. Broken debris hidden around the back of the blocks.

Review 60:Easy to find

Review 61:If the hotel could get the council (or whoever) to improve access to the beach, it would be perfect. I nearly fell a few times trying to go down the "path".

Review 62:The room we were upgraded to was very nice, comfy bed, quiet. Free breakfast was just cereals and toast but very welcome. Staff were lovely and our dinner in the restaurant was good.

Review 63:There was nothing that we could claim we didn't like.

Review 64:We liked the comfortable bed, the shower which did not splash water everywhere and some room to move. In particular, the staff were very friendly and accommodating.

Review 65:The hotel had some rooms that had supports under the balconies of the rooms oposite reception, which doesn't make the hotel look safe.

Review 66:Great view from dining room, the room was clean and comfortable, the bed was very comfy. Breakfast was very basic but enjoyable.

Review 67:Second room, the 2 bedroom apartment, was disappointing, looking tired and well worn. It did not help that the bed linen was coloured and the painted walls and doors, battleship grey. Gave the impression of being tardy and neglected. Paintwork scuffed and chipped. In fact it was clean but looked at first sight "scruffy ". Had booked similar rooms for our return journey but asked if we could have an extra bed in the standard double room but told no, so I cancelled the whole second booking.

Review 68:Booked two rooms, one was good, large and clean. Bathroom good and very good value for money. However see minus views!

Review 69:Although check in was 2pm, we were able to check in at 11 am. Family room with 2 double beds (2 couples travelling together) was clean and comfortable. Complimentary continental breakfast in the restaurant included. They opened at 7am on a Sunday for us as we needed to get an early start back to Perth.

Review 70:The room was not that new as photos. They should use the recent room photos. Kitchen facilities are very poor. There is no cook top. I guess they expect us to eat at the restaurant instead...

Review 71:Very close to the beach.

Review 72:The position is great, it looks out over the ocean and thats about the only positive I could find for it.

Review 73:The African Reef is seriously in need of a total makeover, the rooms I was in not clean and was infested with ants.. and cockroaches. The grounds are terrible and most of garden beds contain dead plants.

Review 74:Thought we would get brewed coffee at breakfast, but alas they only offered instant coffee.

Review 75:The place was quiet and for the amount you paid, it was good value. They even gave us a continental breakfast.

Review 76:No complaints or misgivings at all.

Review 77:Represents good value for the price, location, right on the beach, is excellent, continental breakfast was included in tariff, parking very easy, not far from the centre of town.

Review 78:The room I was in was past its prime. It was as clean as one could make it but I think the last renovation was done in the 1980's.

Review 79:The staff were unfailingly polite and genuine. Especially when a certain someone forgets their suitcase and they rang within minutes to let me know it was available for collection at reception. The views from the carpark were amazing and the beach was just a very short walk away. The size of the room was good, with an individual bedroom, living room and bathroom. Plenty of room to swing a cat or other small/medium domestic animal.

Review 80:Nothing

Review 81:We stayed overnight travelling north Great location overlooking beach Great food at the Restaurant and unexpected continental breakfast included in overnight price Will stay again great value

Review 82:Unfriendly staff that were hard to locate on arrival. Cold rooms, we were there in September. No extra blankets. Dated rundown furniture. Hotel nearly empty but we got rooms a block away, outside access only.

Review 83:Continental breakfast good. Friendly staff in the morning.

Review 84:There were two chairs in the living area instead of a couch. Made for less comfortable tv viewing. Lots of moths behind the window curtain as well.

Review 85:Nice location, friendly staff and really soft towels.

Review 86:Complimentary breakfast didn't start until 8 am (we had left for the day by this time) and none on Mon morning at all so never got any. The general resort gardens and common areas look run down. No sharp knives in kitchen, tv in our room had line through picture and terrible sound. Reception doesn't open til 8am. Minimal information in info folder about local takeaway eateries (especially when they closed the restaurant Sat night for wedding)

Review 87:Clean, spacious 2 bedroom unit. Great restaurant food. Amazing views from common area and restaurant. Close to beach. Nice pool area. Geraldton in general was a great spot for young family holiday. Our kids loved it.

Review 88:The Motel was by no means full or event 1/2 full but our room for 3 adults was almost at the end of the long far wall of old motel units. Door was jammed and we requested another room. Our 2nd room was so much more comfortable. Just wondering why we would be offered a room like the 1st when there were other better options available??

Review 89:We were there for only 1 night, enjoyed the beautiful view and proximity to the ocean. The restaurant was also very conventient and good service. Thank you.

Review 90:The dirty bed sheets that we discoverd @ 9.30pm as we where turning on for the night spoiled the whole experience. I left a not for the management with my name and contact number, they couldn't even call to appologise.

Review 91:Nothing to like

Review 92:Restaurant closed only open for breakfast so would expect equipment to prepare meals in the kitchenette. No saucepans or oven/cooktop. Stayed two nights had to go out for meals both nights. Sad to see a place which must have been once very good in such a depressed state!

Review 93:Magnificent views quiet location

Review 94:The windows needed cleaning, and the curtains needed replacing - very grubby and a bit worse for wear.

Review 95:We loved the large bedroom/sitting room with a fantastic ocean view. The restaurant was excellent, good food and friendly service.

Review 96:We could not believe that the nightly rate for this resort included breakfast with a beautiful outlook over the water. You did require a car to get to the city centre but that didn't bother us at all.

Review 97:staff had only recently taken over the property but were very friendly and welcoming Price was reasonable considering it included brekky but rooms very plain and dated. We only stayed one night as we were passing through Geraldton so didn't get to use any of the facilities.

Review 98:The range of cooking utensils was very meager & made preparing & heating up even basic meals difficult.

Review 99:The view from the breakfast room was magnificent over the Indian Ocean. Complimentary continental breakfast which we weren't expecting.

Review 100:Suzy was a wonderful host

Review 101:Staff rarely there. No restaurant or breakfast service. BBQs in bad condition.

Review 102:Staff were good when they were there. Excellent location

Review 103:Got upgraded to a new room..it doesnt have a microwave but it doesnt matter to us.. Cheep n good!

Review 113:Location on the beach, nice clean little pool

Review 114:A lot of onsite maintenance is required, roadways etc.

Review 115:Location is good

Review 116:the lack of a bed side light or light switch & limited breakfast menu

Review 117:the bed was very comfortable
