Reviews for Grand Hotel Karel V

Review 1:Perfect location. Beautifully decorated rooms, top notch bathroom facilities. and most of all, Extremely high level of service (they came in person to turn up the heat, close the curtains in the evening and they even brought me a giant bowl from the kitchen so I could have my takeout. TRULY 5 Star service.)

Review 2:breakfast on Jan 1st was a disaster. People waiting in the hall for a place, an annex was opened but not heated, no choice of food and.. no food at all.

Review 3:perfect location (right in the center but surrounded by nature, so quiet!), very friendly staff, wellness.

Review 4:More a criticism of booking.com than the hotel - the address and directions from station were wrong. We ended up walking about twice as far as necessary.

Review 5:Helpful and friendly staff. Brasserie excellent.

Review 6:Nothing, an outstanding hotel.

Review 7:Brilliant. Beautifully restored buildings on very large site, close to railway station and old town. Exceptional staff who were only to happy to assist.

Review 8:Price of breakfast (and fact it wasn't included in room cost).

Review 9:The atmosphere of the hotel, location, quietness of room, sauna and steam booth and staff.

Review 10:The room itself was a bit dated.

Review 11:The restaurant was wonderful! The rooms and all the facilities we saw were spectacularly clean, and all the staff we met was incredibly welcoming. Great area in the city. We enjoyed some time at the really nice spa.

Review 12:We had two single beds pushed together not at all what I expected from a five star hotel. Bed linen was shabby and old looking. The wellness centre was cold and the water FREEZING.

Review 13:We had a most memorable, educational, and wonderful experience in the Cellar bar with the bar man Rubin who introduced us to Dutch gin and its history an extremely knowledgeable and enthusatic tutor.

Review 14:Fitness center could be a bit bigger.

Review 15:The restaurant and the rooms were excellent, great staff all around, including the restaurants and bar. The location is absolutely perfect in every sense.

Review 16:Shower door leaked terribly. bathroom floor soaked with every short use. Key card "failed" every day and needed recoding

Review 17:Location and quality of facility. Meal quality excellent and staff very pleasant and helpful, but restaurant understaffed and service very slow for an expensive dinner.

Review 18:Nothing, everything was very good.

Review 19:Excellent, spacious bedroom, very comfortable, good shower & separate bath. Good breakfast, beautiful gardens. Very good staff, nothing was too much trouble & there were plenty of staff around to help.

Review 20:Our first room was so dusty that we insisted to be moved to another room! The next room was much nicer ! no loo paper in the bathroom though !Flimsy water dripping out of the shower head ! and after the bath towelswere changed we only got one back for two people ! really lousy servicefor a 5 star hotel ! by that time we were so fed up that we did not evencomplain ! come to Austria and we show you what a 5 star Hotel lookslike ! The entrance hall still has the aura of the military hospital itused to be, the cold stone floor where the sitting area is, not in theleast cozy, nobody ever wants to sit there and there was certainlynobody to be seen ! Money totally wasted, the staff was friendly though.

Review 21:Everything was just perfect - worth every cent! Absolutely the best hotel to stay in Utrecht - close to everything with luxurious spa and toiletries, great restaurant and breakfast

Review 22:The fact that I had to leave after only one night.

Review 23:Top class luxury hotel as it should be in a perfect location. Perfect as always in this hotel. Both old building and new wing are a pleasure to stay in.

Review 24:Everything was perfect. Lovely room with two windows and balcony. Luxury at an affordable price. Helpful, friendly staff even towards me with my rucksack and scruffy clothes!

Review 25:Noisy in the morning, when the garbage was collected, some timeworn furniture. Needs better cleaning and dusting in the room (it was dusty by the drapes, for example). The sauna was not working (I was happy with the turkish steam bath though)

Review 26:Really great location, great staff, tasty breakfast, spatious and quiet room, nice bathroom and bathroom products, great Spa.

Review 27:While the rooms were good value, the breakfast was very expensive.

Review 28:The building in it's grounds was stunning and our room (and bed!) were simply enormous. The hotel was very luxurious without feeling overly formal.

Review 29:Balcony ceiling covered in cobwebs, got dirty tea cups. Wifi not really stable, had to constantly reconnect. Computer for use in the common lounge too slow for practical use. Staff at times too busy( applies to hotel and brasserie) to get things right.

Review 30:Location to the city was wonderful, rooms big and spacious. Brasserie has a wonderful blend of tea.

Review 31:Nothing. Perhaps the pool could be a bit warmer though.

Review 32:A lovely hotel full of atmosphere and a very helpful and hospitable staff. Our daughter had to go to the doctor one day, and the staff immediately called one and gave her a teddy bear. The breakfast is pure pleasure and the court where you can have breakfast and dinner is lovely. Utrecht is literally on your doorstep and is a love old city full of life.

Review 33:For such a bicycle friendly country it was very hard for us to lock up our bicycles near our room; staff have better facilities which they don't like guests using. Go figure? Also, my wife stayed here last year and raved about the breakfast. - this year it was an overpriced farce at 22 Euros for really nothing at all, not even a toaster, and no real coffee. Housekeeping was also rather hit and miss for a hotel of this standard and they smile upon smoking in one of the restaurants!

Review 34:The location was great and they probably did as much for us as they wanted to or cared.

Review 35:Fantastic hotel in the heart of Utrecht! We had requested a baby cot and everything was ready in the room: a baby cot with kids' sheets, a changing mat with many little towels and a nappy disposal bin! Great garden. Facial treatments and massages at a reasonable price.

Review 36:Thought breakfast was included in the rate but it wasn't. Because we didn't eat that much, felt we could have gone to the local bakery for a fraction of the cost.

Review 37:Perfect location if you want to stay in Utrecht and need to have parking onsite as we did. A 5 min walk out the back and you were at the canals and Dom Tower. The staff we extremely helpful. Their wellness center also has a great jet stream pool and hot tub, as well as sauna and a steam shower (which we couldn't get to work but no matter).

Review 38:Had to pay for water in the room. In our opinion this should be complimentary in a 5* hotel. Rooms were very tired, we stayed in Deluxe room 240. Not a 5* Room, furniture outdated, bathrooms& toilet poor,

Review 39:Location great, outside dining/drinking area lovely and staff very attentive. We didn't stay for breakfast as at the best part of €45 we thought this was expensive.

Review 40:For a five star hotel I think that although the bathroom was roomy and solid, the shower could have been a little more up-to-date, larger, and more efficient.

Review 41:The hotel was excellently located and had a grand aura.

Review 42:Breakfast was a ripoff for the quality of food and variety. Staff was spotty regarding service. Room was a hodge podge with no real character. King bed was 2 twins put together, and they were of very low quality. Definitely not worth 250 euros.

Review 43:Nice grounds and location. Spa looks good.

Review 44:The bedrooms need attention to detail

Review 45:Superb gardens with alfresco dining situated in the best part of Utrecht. The hotel is easily reached by car, with 24hr secure parking.

Review 46:Well maintained properly. Great location. Able to walk everywhere. Beautiful grounds. Only quibble safe did not work and when we reported it to the desk they said they would take care of it, but never did.

Review 47:Grandness of some of the public rooms, intimacy of the cellar bar, serenity of spacious grounds. I'm 54 and have stayed in hundreds of hotels around the world and am difficult to impress, but this place is excellent

Review 48:car parking cost alot in this city but in the back street of the hotel you can fine a public parking area which cost 36 Eur/24 hrs as well as the parking area in the hotel. you can feel its old building but still nice, the breakfast not included in the rate and expensive, did not even think to try it once (cost 22.5 per person)

Review 49:the location really good, just 5 min walking to utrecht central station from the front door of the hotel and few steps to utrecht center, shops, restaurant and coffee shops from the back door of the hotel. the staff were all nice and helpful, we got upgrade to suite for our honeymoon.

Review 50:Poor breakfast for a 5star hotel. Some rooms are in the newer buildings.. Quality of that building and rooms are not so good as the main historical building. I really expected more from this hotel. Their restaurant is very good. Location is perfect.

Review 51:Light from the frontside light beams (shining on the hotel as marketing, I assume) comes in everywhere. Wifi is soso. Breakfast is very expensive (22,50 per person per day), as is the room itself. Going to the bar or the breakfast room and back to your room takes quite a bit of walking (but the hotel is just really big).

Review 52:Bed. Chairs. Bar with good selection of drinks. Choice at breakfast (even though hardly any fresh fruit other than apples). Staff is friendly and helpful. The hotel and everything in it just looks magnificent, like "is this possible in The Netherlands".

Review 53:Gorgeous gem of a hotel. Right in the city centre but feels like you are out of the way. Bars and shops are just outside the back gate. Its a short walk from the station. The staff are fabulous and id recommend you pop to the vaulted bar its gorgeous.

Review 54:The historical significance of the hotel and the beautiful way it has been reconstructed, the staff was excellent, the room comfortable, the food yummie and the location was perfect!

Review 55:Lo quality of the beauty center Old furnitures Noise at lower floors Overall from a 5 stars hotel the above services need to be improved

Review 56:Breakfast Position Brasserie Pets welcomed

Review 57:* Breakfast at €22 a head a bit pricey - can't say we didn't like it really though, we just didn't have it and went to one of the many nearby cafes instead * Nothing else - it genuinely feels 5 star

Review 58:* Fabulous price at Booking.com * The rooms were lovely - and well-designed * Spacious grounds of the hotel * Cellar bar excellent - though sadly we were the only people in it. Prosecco €3 a glass - still wondering if that's right * Location in central Utrecht

Review 59:The only flaw is that there are not enough english speaking channels on the TV and free films as I tend to retire at 8 pm .

Review 60:Without doubt one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in , and I have stayed in a lot of hotels around the world in the last 40 years

Review 61:Never in my life I have had such low value for money... A small room (in 3 -4 star hotels it was bigger), a narrow bed (in 3-4 star hotels it was wider), low pressure of water in the bathroom, old doors etc. This room should cost 70 euros maximum!

Review 62:Breakfast very costly. Parking is expensive-hotel guests should not have to pay for parking.

Review 63:Customer service was excellent. Rooms were spacious, but in need of detailed cleaning-hairdryer & radiator in bathroom dusty, closets interior need a good wipe down as well as doors & walls. Coffee & Tea facilities in room were a nice touch. Common areas were well kept. Gardens are beautiful. Only utilized Brasserie Goeie Louisa for pre-dinner drinks on patio which was very nice. Location is wonderful-walking distance to everything. We enjoyed lovely breakfast at nearby cafes.

Review 64:Nothing

Review 65:This was one of our favorite hotel during our two week vacation inEurope. Every staff member we encountered was very friendly and helpful! We watched one employee deal with a difficult guest and she was 100%professional the entire engagement. The hotel itself is grand andimpressive. Well worth the price. We only wished we had more time tostay there. It is definitely on our list to stay at on our next trip!

Review 66:The fittings and fixtures in the room are a bit tired, and are in need of some updating to remain to be of 5-star standard.

Review 67:The hotel is located right in the centre, but nevertheless offers quiet sanctuary from the buzz of the city. The buildings and grounds, as well as the room itself, are magnificent and exude grandeur.

Review 68:hard to think of anything - no milk with tea and coffee at first, but asked and fresh milk was put in the fridge each day so not really a complaint!

Review 69:everything

Review 70:could not control room temperature and found it a little stuffy so had to open doors for some fresh air.

Review 71:location - 5 minutes from train station and 1/2 hour with express train into Amsterdam. On the edge of old town Utrecht with canals and restaurants. Will never stay in Amsterdam again when this city is so much more charming, less frenetic with tourists and Amsterdam so easy to get to for a day or evening trip. Also easier to get to hotel from airport.

Review 72:there was a party going on in a ground floor room even after 1:00am. I called to notify the front desk, and after 30 minutes of no action, I had to call again. Eventually around 2:00am, it finally started to quiet down. Made for a short night.

Review 73:Breakfast was delicious, but expensive, and not really worth it after little sleep.

Review 74:TV not working- adapter hanging at foot of bed and ariel loose. Also kettle not working and again, an adapter hanging behind cupboard that contains fridge. Electrics not efficient or smart ...or safe ? Not up to a high enough standard for a ' Superior ' room charging a lot of money per night.

Review 75:Staff friendliness, comfort of room, sense of history of the building, quietness, fountains in courtyard and brilliant club sandwich and chips!!

Review 76:the hotel bar is not easy to find (it's underground!) and also struck me as not easily accessible by those with mobility issues

Review 77:The setting was beautiful - canal side / beautiful buildings, spacious courtyard, very comfortable rooms and real coffee maker in room - very impressive! Great choice in buffet breakfast and very friendly service at reception

Review 78:Bedroom could do with modernising, especially the lighting and the bathroom.

Review 79:Excellent location right in the heart of Utrecht yet very tranquil. Staff very attentive, efficient and knowledgeable. Relaxing atmosphere. Breakfast excellent. Ate in the brasserie both evenings, food superb. Bed very comfortable. Would highly recommend.

Review 80:Minor point - paying extra for car parking was a bit wrong

Review 81:The reception staff were excellent , friendly efficient - just perfect. Room was well equipped, quiet and very clean. Breakfast was good without being 5 star and overall location close to the old town was perfect.

Review 82:The hotel, for the second time, took a huge deposit on my credit card, so I couldn't use it anymore after a few days. The spa is a bit cold.

Review 83:It is an old beautiful hotel just next to a gem of an old romantic city with plenty of life. The staff is friendly and the breakfast is excellent and they have an old fruit garden where you can sit. I'll give it 9/10

Review 84:Construction made it difficult to get to the hotel without detailed instructions. Don't rely on your GPS!

Review 85:The breakfast was outstanding and the grounds of the hotel were beautiful.

Review 86:Parking for hotel guests at €15 for the car seemed high.

Review 87:We found the grounds lovely, especially the fruit tree walk, and the location was most convenient for exploring Utrecht. We ate a four course meal at the hotels restaurant , and it was extraordinarily good.

Review 88:Great location, delicious breakfast , beautiful decoration in diningroom. And to park your car for two days for 15 euro, downtown Utrecht ,was a bonus. Excellent service.

Review 89:I booked a deluxe suite and looked directly at the sloped room of the next building. Given I stayed for three days, I felt the view should have been more reflective of what was advertised for this type of room. While the room was air conditioned, the unit seemed to pump cool but humid air. I tried to resolve this by opening the windows but then could not sleep because the church bells rang very loud all night on the quarter hour. I suggest you open the windows and also leave the air con on and the noise from the air con seems to reduce the church bells - which I really did enjoy during the day. Finally, the hotel was difficult to find from the rail station so I suggest you get a detailed map off the internet.

Review 90:I liked the location and the attitude of the staff. The ambience was also excellent. It was easy walking distance to the old town. The desk in the room and the lighting were excellent as was the strength of the internet. It was a hotel that seemed to want to work for guests. The courtyard of the hotel was also spacious and excellent.

Review 91:Room in modern block was decent but not 5 star. Patio doors opening onto car park and recycling bins. Problem with lock on our door. Spa pool tiny.

Review 92:Gardens Interior and decor of main block Breakfast room Super helpful staff Location Cycle hire on site Drinks in courtyard Good vibe Historic feel. Blauw Indonesian restaurant around the corner.

Review 93:Excellent location, close to the city center and train station, but very quite. Excellent environment and facilities, very nice courtyard, fitness room and restaurant. Staff are kind and professional.

Review 94:Everything. This is a top class hotel in a great location for visiting the centre of Utrecht (5 minutes walk) and the staff were extremely helpful and efficient

Review 95:Our TV did not work very well, it lost signal every two minutes. However, it was not massive discomfort because it gave us the excuse to into town to watch the football.

Review 96:The rooms are spacious and very clean. Also, the pool, sauna and jacuzzi area were a pleasant surprise. Would recommend this hotel.

Review 97:lovely property, great wifi, lovely room & friendly staff

Review 98:Absolutely great Hotel! Staff friendly and helpful. Location is great with easy access for city centre.

Review 99:central situated and nice quiet. friendly staff and very comfortable, nice decorated

Review 100:Cleaners did always clean room.did not leave coffee or milk. Left our door open!

Review 101:Rest of staff. Vocationally

Review 102:Breakfast should be available as part of room-service.

Review 103:Great location, lovely character buildings, grand room with everything you need and more

Review 104:Nice visit in Utrech and perfect hotel location for this. Hotel facilities were excellent, breakfast great and service friendly.

Review 105:Lication

Review 106:Everything

Review 107:Central location. Interesting historic building. Room comfortable

Review 108:Staff!

Review 109:Bedt place in town

Review 110:Beautiful room, excellent location and very helpful staff.

Review 111:The room was very comfortable and the breakfast was gorgeous

Review 112:Service, small pool, Quality of breakfast

Review 113:Central location, adjacent to cafes and restaurants, with on site parking. Housekeeping responded rapidly with a friendly smile for any request.

Review 114:Location and setting was lovely. Enjoyed breakfast.

Review 115:Spa facilities seemed a bit sparse.

Review 116:Really liked the central location. Enjoyed the food in the hotel's brasserie.

Review 117:Heated floor in bathroom

Review 118:Very clean tidy unique property with very helpful front desk staff.

Review 119:Absolutely nothing

Review 120:Absolutely fabulous
