Reviews for Hotel Athgira
Review 1:The restaurant is expensive but convenient as there isn't anywhere else very near by. We got a take away breakfast to take on safari, and it was the most disappointing thing I have ever eaten and cost $7. Save a bit of money by buying your water from the stall next door instead of from the restaurant at least.
Review 2:This is directly opposite the Elephant Transit Home so you can easily go to see the baby elephants at feeding time - a real highlight. The staff arranged our safari and it was very straight forward. The pool is a welcome relief as the area is particularly hot.
Review 3:Very friendly and very helpful staff. Hotel seems brand new. The resturant is pricey but food was really good. I arrived very late but Hotel arranged a dinner and also safari in the morning. I would stay here again.
Review 4:There were alot of flies at the dining area. WIFI is only available at the dining area.
Review 5:The hotel is new and spacious. Simple and elegant room, great air-conditioning. Located right next to the elephant home; left room 5mins before evening feeding time.
Review 6:Terrible night sleep due to very noisy Russian group who were allowed to monopolise the pool and party extremely loudly very late at night. Operator monopolised the safari excursions so try and share around.
Review 7:Very honest manager and proactive in trying to keep noisy Russian group quieter.
Review 8:Our shower stunk as the drains are poor. The owner is great but there was a couple of times we arranged something with him but he didn't tell other people so we didn't have transport waiting for us to the new year party as an example. There was also no mosquito net as advertised. Also be aware that there are open slats in the windows of the basic rooms meaning anything can fly in and out of your room.
Review 9:Great location for a safari and quick trips to the nearest shops. There's a little shop next door which is great and the elephant orphanage literally opposite! We arranged a safari through the owner which was very reasonably priced. We also were offered free transport to a new year event at another hotel owned by the same person. The pool is lovely as we spent a day longer then most so we could spend some time relaxing. Best shower we had in Sri Lanka. The lack of air con in the basic rooms isn't a massive issue as the sun is never directly facing the rooms. We could have breakfast at any time and there is a very well priced buffet lunch and dinner option although the food was cold when we did this. We took a tuk tuk (200 rupees) to the nearest shops for tea the next night.
Review 10:Non AC rooms are terrible with open vents and no mosquito nets. Curtains are just nets so poor privacy. Very noisy and exposed. They checked us into the wrong room on arrival which was poor and we were stuck with non AC room on first night! Bad smell from poor drainage in the bathroom.
Review 11:Nice pool area, good food and excellent location.
Review 12:There are no curtains so during the night it was too light inside. Also, lot's of noise in the evening and early morning (I suspect we were sleeping close to the staff's chambers...). Mosquitoes are free to fly in and out so we had to sleep with repellent.
Review 13:The room is very modern and there is a pool. Food is good (a bit expensive though) and the staff really nice.
Review 14:There were just beds and one small bedside table in our room. We hade to use the table from the balcony. Wifi didn´t work in rooms, just in the restaurant.
Review 15:Good location in front of Elephant Orphanage. Nice pool, pleasant restaurant, very kind and very helpfull staff. We managed our full two days safari trip through the hotel manager Asanka. There was possibility to pay with credit cards in the hotel.
Review 16:Insects and lizzards can get inside the room easily. If you do not fancy them, ask for a mosquito net.
Review 17:New, clean and spacious rooms. Even the ones w/o AC are OK. Good choice if you are looking for one-night stay in Uda Walawe. As most of the guesthouses in the area management can arrange a safari tour for you.
Review 18:The food was good but nothing special!
Review 19:Good value for the money and a good location! Easy to organize the safari! Orphanage directly in front of the hotel! We had clean rooms and the pool was looking really nice but it was raining, so we couldn't use it! But everything was fine!
Review 20:Sheer curtains mean everyone can see into your room at night. Being near the elephant park means lots of flies outside. Couldn't get hot water from the shower and it wasn't particularly hot weather in the morning while we were there.
Review 21:The location of this hotel is probably the best in Udawalawe- right across from the elephant orphanage! There is a small shop next door with affordable water and snacks too. The pool is amazing and very refreshing. Staff were friendly and helpful especially ordering tuk tuks or safari tours at reasonable prices. In the restaurant we liked the chicken curry with vegetables the best. The large rooms were brand new. We stayed in the cheapest one which is amazing value for money. Everything is clean, and the fan above the bed is sufficient, no need to pay extra for the AC.
Review 22:I loved everything but the shower was weak.
Review 23:The host, Udiyenge, couldn't be more helpful, assisting us with sending our laundry away to the only laundry service in Ella and again helping when we disputed the cost due to their faulty scales. He also organised a taxi van to take us and 2 other friends to our next destination at a significant discount to the other drivers in Ella. Above all the bedrooms are large and comfortable, beds are hug. The hotels peaceful location is almost in the centre of town (just a 100m walk up a hill which may be too steep for elderly people). If you can pay a little extra for the large bedroom with balcony, it's worth it.
Review 24:No WiFi available in the room, need to go for a public place. Lack of some furniture stuff like towel rack and a teapoe etc.
Review 25:Calm and quiet place with very clean room, beautiful interior, good staff and good service.
Review 26:If I can complain of something, is that there was no mosquito nest. It is quite difficult to avoid them coming into the room, so I would suggest a mosquito nest in the door to the terrace. Another small thing, is they could add a small piece furniture in the bedrooms to put the luggage.
Review 27:Everything. The hotel is brand new, all furniture (bed, linen, fridge, AC etc) and bathroom are in perfect condition. They provided us with towels for the swimming pool, and we enjoyed it a lot. We read that some people complain about the smell of the room, but it is the smell of an extremely new construction. We booked the safari though them and we had a wonderful experience. Breakfast was served afterwards and was really good also. We could not be happier with our stay at Athgira.
Review 28:The toilet leaks dirty water. Sink was set way too low. Screen doors and window screens would help as well since the bugs, flies and mosquitoes come in through the vents in the toilet. If you're going to pay in USD, make sure to count your money before leaving as the cashiers have problems converting USD to LKR.
Review 29:Relatively new hotel in front of the Elephant Transit Home with nice furnishings. Staff are very accommodating especially the guys at the restaurant. They even brought up my dinner for me. Breakfast was really good with eggs and sausages as well as fresh fruit.
Review 30:Wifi was not accessible all throughout the hotel as advised. No cable tv in rooms as advised on website.
Review 31:Perfect place, very clean, the staff organised the safari trip for us.
Review 32:Welcoming people. Very comfortable. No noise. Great view !
Review 33:No wi-fi in beadroom!
