Reviews for Elephant Trail
Review 1:The staff were lovely, but their English was very limited, so it took a while to get suggestions for things to do it the area. We hired bikes from the hotel and 7km in one of the tyres fell off...
Review 2:Hotel was in a great location for visiting the National Park and the Elephant Transit. Evening meal that we had included in our package was good and varied.
Review 3:Toilet had technical problem which was not permanently solved, thin walls let you hear your neighbours, buffet has nice selection but quality is not so great
Review 4:Near the national park entrance allows for early safaris, breakfast and lunch packages provided (OK but not great food), big room with TV and rain shower, friendly personnel provided help for organizing safari driver guide and taxi, small pool, balcony
Review 5:Staff were a little slow in checking us out, card machine didn't work so we had to pay cash
Review 6:The location was perfect for the Udawada national park Rooms were very nice, with beautiful views Staff were friendly and welcoming Pool was a nice addition
Review 7:The whole experience was just unprofessional. We had booked halfboard but only uppon arrival we were told that there was an extra charge of 20$ because of a special new years eve diner. Also we realised that they organised a big party with DJ in the courtyard, also without prior notice. With all the rooms facing the courtyard and without acoustic isolation there was no escaping it, and in the room the walls were shaking of the loud basses. I can understand that the management wanted to do something special for new years eve but you have to announce that in advance so people wanting a quiet and relaxed new year can book another place, especially when the safaris start at 6am next morning. The bedsheets were not cleaned when we arrived, which was corrected upon our protest. the whole building and the room are very badly built, so that even though its new it feels like in urgent need for a renovation. Comparing the room to other places in Sri Lanka it is way overpriced.
Review 8:The staff really tried to make a good job fulfilling some extra wishes of ours. Food was quite good. The guide for the national park was friendly and competent.
Review 9:less fish on the menu would be our only negative comment
Review 10:We loved the location of this hotel, the service and facilities were also great, and the safari was definitely the highlight of our trip
Review 11:More customer oriented management necessary. We paid for deluxe room but received only standard room (without compensation).
Review 12:Waiters did a good job. Safari was fantastic (cost savings might be possible when sharing a jeep with other guests).
Review 13:The hotel organised our safari for us and the driver was not very good and brought us back half an hour early.
Review 14:Location and room were good value for money.
Review 15:The rooms are bare, no toiletries, hair drier (you can ask for one) or in room fridge.
Review 16:Location is perfect if you are doing a safari in Udawalawe Park. The premises are good and modern, very stylish and the staff are very attentive too.
Review 17:Wifi didn't work as promised. We couldn't order from the a la carte menu, and were instead referred to the menu (that wasn't so good). There were several things in our room that didn't work.
Review 18:Very unconfortable bed, poor food (you have no choice to eat a la carte but only buffet which is quite poor in comparison to other places with same prices)
Review 19:Very close to the park entrance, big rooms and big bathroom.
Review 20:Excellent hotel. Just minutes from the gate to the park, lovely new rooms but doesn't feel out of place. We had a fantastic buffet dinner - probably one of the best meals we had in Sri Lanka. The flat screen TV with movies was a lovely surprise as we had not had anything like that in the past week or two. Really enjoyed our stay here, highly recommend to anyone travelling to Udawalawe.
Review 21:The shower in our room was poorly designed, causing water to flow into the bathroom. This was a safety hazard and caused an accident. The management were not willing to listen to our comments on this issue and made our overall experience poor and worthy of a similar review.
Review 22:Nothing really, but I think it would be good to have better dining options. The night we arrived we were not in a mood to have the dinner buffet but there were no other options. But the chef kindly made us nice sandwich.
Review 23:Almost everything! We stayed 3 nights in this hotel and had a wonderful time. Although the rooms could do with a bit of updating they were comfortable and roomy with a nice balcony overlooking the pool. Staff was very courteous and helpful. We spent the Christmas night at this hotel and the manager Nishantha organised the most scrumptious buffet for the guests at a very reasonable price with live music and let the guests had a very good time with dancing and fireworks. The chef was very keen about his food and made genuine effort to see that we enjoyed our meals. We have stayed in more expensive hotels but this one takes the cake!
Review 24:We booked our room for 2 nights but afterwards decided to stay for an additional night, 1 day before staying at the hotel we called and asked if one more night would be possible. The person on the phone confirmed this and assured us that upon arrival we would be able to enlengthen our stay for one more night. When we arrived at the hotel nobody knew anything about this call and we were told that everything was booked out, despite rooms being available on booking.com for the desired dates. When we kept on referring to the call the manager quickly got very loud and told us he couldn't do anything. Organized safari by the hotel is overpriced and guide wasn't in the mood for talking at all. When asking how we could get to the closest express bus station the manager told us that he doesn't live in the region and therefore doesn't have to know it/ can't help us. Definetly no value for money and not recommended!
Review 25:Very close to park entrance. Comfortable beds
Review 26:Bad food. 3star in occidental hotel standards but with price of 5stars. Personal at the reception no helpful. The safari offered by the hotel was no good.
Review 27:We found nothing to dislike.
Review 28:The hotel overall, being an honest, clean and well run 3 star establishment. The food was simply excellent-a real surprise. People are often disappointed with a hotel because they over expect, so knowing that this was in Sri Lankan 'bush' country, we kept our expectations to a limit. How good it was to be so pleasantly surprised at the good standard of the room, cleanliness, and the simply excellent food. Truthfully far better than a supposed 5 star place we stayed in previously. The staff were really helpful, gave excellent service, and arranged the safari, and a car to Colombo following our stay.We would recommend it.
Review 29:They recommended a driver that we believe it was the first time in his live it was driving a car.
Review 30:New installations, close to national park, the safari
Review 31:no room safe or safety deposit boxes at reception. The restaurant menu was limited with a lot of the items "not available" but what was available was very well cooked. They couldn't get the credit card machine to work which was very inconvenient at check out & I had to take one of their staff to an ATM 9km away to get cash out when I wanted to pay by credit card. The staff member had to walk back. If I had not hired a car I don't know how they had have got payment from me. Hotel management needs sorting out, could be a really good hotel
Review 32:the room & bathroom was large with a good size balcony. It was well furnished
Review 33:1. Flies everywhere especially in dining room 2. Hot water cutting out during shower 3. Terrible food- most of the menu was unavailable 4. Wi-fi so slow not usable 5. no Tea and coffee making facilities in room
Review 34:the only positive of this hotel was it's proximity to Udawalawe National Park for Elephant safari
Review 35:Had potential to be a really nice place to stay but wifi not working, pool out of order, restaurant very limited, unhelpful staff who revealed a load of hidden costs at checkout, etc. rarely been messed around so much in my life
Review 36:Safari was good.
Review 37:pool being renovated so we couldn't use it (was my booking argument) which gives the whole stay a low value for money, although we got a room upgrade as compensation. Pool is also quite small, dinner hall (lot of flies and loud fans) and the highly touristic food menu (although their new chef will change it all)
Review 38:staff friendliness, massive room size and equipment, safari planing, bike rental
Review 39:The hot water was small.
Review 40:The location was very close to the Udawalawe National Part. Very nice hotel with decent decoration. The price it offered for safari was reasonable.
Review 41:We loved the location, hospitality of all staff, our rooms and the food. The chef especially made my family feel very welcome and the buffet was yummy.
Review 42:Too many insects, even on bed, though didn't bother me. Many flies in the restaurant, make the food unsanitary. Welcome drinks are not tasty.
Review 43:Near the national park. Convenient to book a safari.
Review 44:It do with more sunbeds around the pool - especially with so many people relaxing in between a morning or afternoon safari.
Review 45:Can't praise this place enough. Wonderful location next to the park, large and lovely rooms which have a nice 'safari' feel to them, great pool to relax around, excellent and good value food with good variety, helpful staff who will assist with anything, and bikes available to explore the local countryside. We loved it here!
Review 46:No information provided at check-in or in the room re meal timings, wifi password, facilities, etc. A towel had been left in the sink-they clearly hadn't finished cleaning. No toilet roll, no free toiletries like everywhere else we'd been, poor sealant around shower screen so it leaked everywhere. The bathroom light didn't work. Sheets didn't fit the bed. We tried to order dinner, but almost nothing was available on the menu! What we did have, was average at best. Wifi coverage was abysmal!
Review 47:Drink on arrival was a nice touch. The place looks really nice-the room was lovely and the bathroom really nice. Very convenient location for the Elephant Safari at Udawalawe National Park.
Review 48:Wifi needs to be fixed. Keeps disconnecting every 3 minutes
Review 49:we stayed for one night, mainly for the National park. The rooms were nice and huge. Loved the stay. Note there is nothing else around the hotel so you will end up chilling at the hotel itself
Review 50:I'd say this hotel is overpriced. For a hotel that offers little more than its proximity to the national park a nights stay is relatively costly versus similar places in SL. A double room cost around 9500IKR (£48 or $70) roughly after taxes etc are added. On the flip side of the location being good for the park it also means the hotel is relatively isolated meaning you have little choice but to eat and drink there which again in comparison to elsewhere is in my opinion overpriced, 1400IKR for a buffet diner (£7 or $10) is too much. The food was nice enough but the price too high
Review 51:The location was good for Udawalawe National Park, staff were nice. Room was clean and nice enough, done the job
Review 52:It is a shame that such a nice hotel has little bit dirty and unclean rooms. Spider nets in the corners, dead insects in the bed lamp, chewing gum stucked to the bed, shower drain was stuck with dirt and hair so water hasn't flow off. No hair dryer as described. No hot water as i would expected from this place.
Review 53:Beautiful modern place Welcoming staff Wifi at room Cabel tv at room Spacious rooms Location Swimming pool
Review 54:The WiFi coverage was sporadic and often dropped connection. The checkout process was very lengthy too.
Review 55:The location for the safari tours was excellent and worked well for the morning trip out into the national park. The room and, particularly the bathroom, were very nice. Very easy to sort out a wildlife tour in the national park.
Review 56:The stay in this hotel was amazing!! The room with the balcony awesome!! Less than one year hotel. And the staff very helpful and friendly! Everything excellent!
Review 57:We found big spider inside the room.. I take video on it.. Looks like hotel does not have safety for inserts special on below the door's and Windows also the roof is easy for hiding something and you can see it
Review 58:Nice hotel and location
Review 59:When we arrived, they told us the hotel has no water and we have to go to an other of their hotels. -After one hour, when we say that we don't want to go to the hotel of their purpose and that we have booked an other hotel with booking.com, they told us that the water will work in one hour and that we can stay. We would like to go away at this moment, but we think that there is a risk that we have to pay the cancelled if we don't stay... -Television doesn't work (there is a message after a moment, on the screen, saying that "our records indicate an overdue as of 15 July"). -No warm water the first day. -The food is really not good... -The swimming pool is not really clean. -a lot of died bugs and moskitos on the floor in the bathroom. -animal's poo (lezard?) on the bed
Review 60:+beautiful rooms +swimming pool +Very nice staff +new hotel
Review 61:The pool was full of flies, almost didn't let my son go I. But he is 2 and really excited about swimming... The receptionist was quite moody, the restaurant staff were great but served my partner cold rice, when they changed his meal they mixed it up with chicken, having not eaten chicken for 20 years he thought it was fish... They didn't even offer for him to have free meal, so bad could not believe it. Ruined our evening.
Review 62:The rooms were great, big ang light and had nice balcony and beautifully clean bathroom
Review 63:WiFi was very poor and the food was expensive.
Review 64:A wonderful little hotel that's a 15 min drive away from the Udawalawe National Park to which they also organize safari tours. The place looks fantastic with its blend of wood with gray and white stone. The swimming pool is decent, the food is good and the service up to par. Our room came with a great view.
Review 65:Due to the fact it is a pretty new hotel the meals were a bit chaotic, but I'm sure they will improve that as they get more experienced
Review 66:Friendly staff, nice contemporary rooms, very close (2 min) to the park
Review 67:This hotel is worst one I lived in Sri. The manager is an unhonest one. The following was what he said. "You pay two nights and live one night then the safari jeep is free for you. You pay two nights and live two nights then it will not free". Then what is the meaning of free? That means if I use the hotel jeep I need to pay 65$. However I found a jeep outside only used 11$. Terrible?
Review 68:Nothing
Review 69:Slow Internet but we experienced this at all of our hotels in Sri Lanka.
Review 70:The staff was exceptional--very friendly and helpful. The room was clean and comfortable, and the restaurant food was very good.
Review 71:Because we had a large family group of 11, the manager suggested he serve us a buffet dinner rather than a la carte. We agreed to this, but I think it turned out to be labour-saving and cost cutting for him, rather than doing us any favours. The meal was pretty average.
Review 72:Lovely swimming pool, relaxed atmosphere, modern look
Review 73:basic communication
Review 74:proximity to the national park great facilities Jungle feel Breakfast. Very friendly staff. Organised Safari in the very last minute. A bit expensive but worth every penny.
Review 75:Set menu was good value but some snacks could also be added to a general menu, which should be printed and available.
Review 76:3 month old hotel, close to national park, with excellent facilities, helpful & friendly manager and great swimming pool. Good room with lovely views.
Review 77:ants ants ants all over the bed at the first night.asked switch the room , found two dead ants on the bed in the new room,so just have the sheets changed. found ants ruined our food in the bag next morning .called for manager in our room for the situation, manager reluctant to come upstairs to solve the problem. at last, only 5 dollars discount. even our food ruined by ants worth more than 5 dollars.
Review 78:modern and spacious room with a balcony
Review 79:Room not exactly like we've booked and without any sound isolation which can make it very hard to sleep being so close to the park.
Review 80:Location right next to the national park and the good breakfast.
Review 81:This lovely hotel is located just a little bit outside the natural park. Everything is brand new, great location, big and spacious rooms, amazing views, nice bathroom. We loved to sit by the pool and enjoy. The food is very good, edpecially the rice & curry. Great breakfast!!! The staff is nice and welcoming and they organize everything for you... Safari, transfer,... I couldn't recommend them more!
Review 82:The food at the BBQ was a little dissapointing, but it didn't bother us too much as we enjoyed sitting outside under the candle light.
Review 83:Friendly staff. Beautiful grounds, including pool and BBQ set up in the evening. Made going to Uda Walawe National Park so easy. They even have breakfast ready for you when you return from the morning safari. Excellent value for the money I felt.
Review 84:This hotel has lots of potential, but it is being let down a little in a few ways. We had a deluxe room on the first floor - with a balcony overlooking the pool area. The first thing that hit us when we opened the room door was the smell of (I believe) moth repellent. We found them in the wardrobe and other wooden furniture in the room and bathroom. It was quite horrible and our clothes remained packed due to this. The room could be very attractive, but I found it a little stark. It was as though the hotel had been designed well at the outset, but after the handover to the owner or management, no-one had thought to add certain touches that are necessary in a hotel of this kind. The plastic flowers didn't help either. The pool area and sunbeds was really useful after a busy day in Udawalawe, but it is very overlooked, with the staff walking about and chatting. Although the manager and other staff were friendly and helpful, I tend to agree with another reviewer that we weren't really given orientation information from the start, wifi password etc. I too had tried to communicate with the hotel prior to our stay (by email) and the taxi driver tried calling but couldn't get through on the number provided by booking.com. This was annoying and not expected of a hotel of any class. I hate to be picky and negative when we had such an amazing time at Udawalawe, but hopefully most of this can easily be rectified.
Review 85:Lots but see negatives...
Review 86:Was told that the safari left at 6.00am but this is a lie - you can arrange safari for any time as we subsequently did - clarify with manager first.
Review 87:Excellent rooms, great location to see elephants, nice pool
Review 88:Wifi could be slightly better and the food is good but nothing special.
Review 89:We stayed for one night and it was perfect. The staff is friendly and helpful, we had a nice room and the pool is great to relax! The safari organised by the hotel was amazing! Seeing other hotels we think this is the best place to stay when visiting Udawalawa.
Review 90:Booked for a double bedroom, balcony, free Wifi. Upon arrival we were given a bedroom without balcony in front of the pool (so we had to keep the curtain shut at all time), the internet has never been working while we were there. There was bedbugs spots on my pillow (about 20 spots)!! The shower was blocked The room very noisy But the worst was the manager... No appologie for anything, NONE, when asked about the bedbugs he said I should have asked for another pillowcase... When we asked for a discount because we didn't get the room with the balcony we paid for, he refused. (It was something like 3/4euros)... The dinner is expensive and the choice is poor (you cannot order a la carte on the evening) The safari is about 1500 roupies more than anywhere else (just go outside and ask anybody) and when we asked if he knew if anybody would like to share a jeep (to reduce the cost), he said that the guest wanted some privacy which was wrong as we asked many of the guest and were all keen to share (he just didn't want to accomodate us) Go somewhere else, keep your money for a nice hotel where the Management is worth something.
Review 91:The hotel looks beautiful, the bedroom was big.
Review 92:Very good value for money. This is relatively small hotel in the perfect position to access national park. Very good room and good food. Very helpful staff
Review 93:this hotel was great for doing a safari and going where the swimming pool was located a lot of people overlook it so feel you wouldn't be able to relax - overall the whole experience was one of the best parts of our holiday
Review 94:Felt as if we were on a African Safari than Asian. Large room with balcony and great safari organised by the friendly staff
Review 95:We stayed here 3 days, is too long for this area. Somedays we where the only guests in the hotel (because it is new) then the staff is too friendly, different staff asking 4 or 5 times the same.
Review 96:Brand new nice big room Perfect swimming pool
Review 97:The food was terrible! We had one meal and literally couldn't bear to eat there again. The following day we went to another hotel for all our meals. This really let the place down for us. If they sorted out their food then this would be a good, reasonable place to stay for a couple of nights if you were going on a safari. Although the staff were friendly they didn't really understand the meaning of customer service. We complained about the food as it all came out completely cold. They were not helpful or apologetic and didn't give us a discount or an alternative. Hence why we had to eat elsewhere after that.
Review 98:The room was clean and comfortable. The hotel is new so the facilities are in good condition. The location was ideal for what we needed. We only stayed for 2 nights.
Review 99:Quite honestly there was nothing to moan about but the sheets on the bed slid off/ruched up during the night, fitted ones would have been better.
Review 100:This is a new hotel so it's clean and everything works. I thought the price was very fair and the manager arranged a safari for us which was excellent and the going rate and not a rip off as you might fear from something arranged by a hotel. I felt bad for not trusting him! The room was called superior and rightly so. Breakfast and staff were great.
Review 101:The hotel mismanaged everything about our booking and through their errors we didn't even get to stay there in the end: the second night we had asked for turned out not to have been booked, and when we arrived on the first night, they said there was no room available due to plumbing issues. They made no attempt to find us alternative accommodation. Looks lovely, but steer clear of the appalling service.
Review 102:The food inside the hotel was not great. They do not provide driver's accommodation. They charge when you use your card. Internet is really slow
Review 103:Brand new and comfortable hotel worth the price.
Review 104:/
Review 105:The hotel is great and very modern as well as the rooms are very nice and clean with great view. The staff is very friendly and helpful, what made our staying even better. There is a nice pool, which at the dinner time looks great with lights. We really enjoyed our staying at Elephant Trails!
Review 106:Wifi is not good enough. The hotel price of safari is a little bit high. For 5 people in a private jeep, hotel gave us a price which is USD 40 at the beginning, and the USD 34 after negotiation. At last, our travel agent gave us a USD 30,so the hotel lose this business with us.
Review 107:If you want a safari in Udawalawe,it will be a very good choice to stay here because they are very close. After a very early get up for safari, you can have your breakfast after the safari, aroud 9:30 am. And the room is big with a balcony.
Review 108:The swimming pool in the photo is not the one at the resort! It wasn't particularly clean when we got there so we didn't use it. There were some leaks in the bathroom but nothing major.
Review 109:This is a new facility with clean rooms and a peaceful location close to the park gates. It's definitely a good place to stay in transit for a night as the rooms are spacious and quite comfortable, and the staff was great.
Review 110:Nothing much around but that was fine with us. Road a little noisy.
Review 111:Perfect location for wildlife park. Very comfortable hotel with great staff. Food generally good. Special thanks to Suranga Jayalath who was so kind and helpful in the restaurant. Hotel deserves at least 3*.
Review 112:WiFi slow, even at pool side and in public areas. Poo nice but right next restaurant and in entrance courtyard, so not very inviting. Card machine not working when we came to check out, despite the fact that it states in Booking.com all most cards accepted. Had to use all available cash to pay. Very annoying! They should fix this issue or remove from advertising.
Review 113:Lovely hotel, new. Big comfortable room, high roof. Great bathroom. Good a/c. Big comfortable bed. Very clean. Excellent staff who were polite and very attentive, especially the restaurant captain. Very good food at evening dinner.
Review 114:There is nothing around apart from a couple of other hotels. Some distant noise from cars passing during the day, not heard when in the room.
Review 115:Great location for doing the safari at Udawalawe national park. The back of the hotel overlooks fields of sugarcane and the savannah, unforgettable views!
Review 116:very bad customer service from the begging. Recipient not professional at all. No welcome greeting. No welcome drinks. foods not worth for money. They are not accepting credit cards.
Review 117:the hotel was very pleasant, however the food was awful - such a shame. I feel the reformed chicken sandwich which was not cheap was a total let down, it was unacceptable. All of our meals here were a let down, they used the cheapest possible meat. When paying this price - one of the most expensive around the park - you do not expect this poor quality of food. Such a shame as the hotel was lovely otherwise.
Review 118:It's a very new hotel so there are some very minor teething problems (e.g. the credit card facility went down during our stay - but I'm sure it will be up and running again soon).
Review 119:We have a great two night stay at Elephant Trials. It's a modern hotel, with decent pool and clean spacious rooms. The food was also particularly good. The park entrace is 5 minutes drive, and the hotel staff are happy to arrange any safari. Special mention for the manager Laksmar, who was so accomodating and great with any requests we had. He also recommended the elephant orphanage which is worth a visit (it's a proper one where tourists don't feed or touch them, which we thought is the right way of doing things). Todd and Ali (London)
Review 120:Wasnt really much around the area but perfect for the safari.
Review 121:Amazing service. The staff went really out of their way to help. Food was great and rooms were fancy.
Review 122:Sorry the restaurant food was not good.
Review 123:Nice pool, very nice helpful staff, good safari, well located not far from the park entrance.
Review 124:the food
Review 125:The location, the value for money
Review 126:Excellent hotel - great rooms - good buffet (we never take the buffet, but this was half board and very good !) - book the safari upfront!!
Review 127:Great hotel close to the national park. Ideal for a safari! The food is amazing, the best we've had in Sri Lanka! Great chef!
Review 128:Friendly staff. Good food. Close to entrance of the park.
Review 129:Beds were very uncomfortable. Pictures make it look far nicer than it actually is.
Review 130:Staff were excellent
Review 131:Bathroom plumbing needs to be fixed.... Fluctuating hot and cold water. Shower didn't drain
Review 132:Great new hotel, friendly staff and great food.
Review 133:Bad food. Lot of mosquitoes. Charge 2-3% on credit card payment
Review 134:Small new property
Review 135:Great location for going to the Parc Great views Nice pool Very modern room, great beds
