Reviews for Manel Guest House

Review 1:A steady stream of travellers to this guesthouse and for good reason. Very well managed establishment with good value meals. A nice atmosphere. Arranged reasonable priced tuk tuk to the ruins and knowledgable about transport elsewhere. The new rooms are more expensive but better quality. Upstairs older rooms with bathroom adequate. Breakfast excellent and generous. Staff extremely helpful and kind.

Review 2:Breakfast was served very late. 8:30 am. Promissed to arrange at 7:30. No beadtea served to room. . low pressure on shower.

Review 3:Washrooms were clean. Staff was able to arrange dinner in quick notice.

Review 4:The inexpensive rooms are not so comfortable even if clean. Our mosquitonet was not big enough for the bed, and we had a loss of water from toilet and sink.

Review 5:The position is nice, they can provide bicycles to visit the ruins. They have new rooms with beautiful view. Nice common area with restaurant.

Review 6:Nothing.

Review 7:It was an easy find spot, very welcoming people. Nice food, comfy and neat room! It was a relief to know when we arrived the hotel that they are arranging the safari trip for their guests as well, as we came to Sri Lanka with very less knowledge on how to go on and about. Didn't have much time to read about the best things to do, how to get to places and the sort and helped us save lots of time and maximise our days in the country.

Review 8:New rooms are pretty good for the price required (it is where we stayed). However, rooms in the old building are not worh the price. A good place to visit polonnaruwa by bike.

Review 9:The old bicycles with no speed change(I fell down twice and injured my left wrist) , and also the windows that are open (we cant close them from inside the room and I checked with the 2 other rooms next to mine it was the same)

Review 10:The friendly and helpful staff members , well located in the city , close by the anciant ruines and Museum and Parakrama Lake , nice view from the balcony in the morning

Review 11:In the old building The rooms are very hot. the a/c did not work well, you should book rooms in the new building with the modern amenities.

Review 12:Layan the manager, great service, very motivated & friendly. went all the way to help us get around & get us bus tickets first class. Bike rentals was a lot of fun.

Review 13:The best of all was Layan, the manager of the hotel. He was super helpfull and always in a good mood. He even played on his flute in the evening for the guests.

Review 14:Not clean , full of insects derty badroom. , to hot room A-C dont work pffffff better places in ponnaruwa. Pay a little more and you find verry good hotels

Review 15:Nothing

Review 16:No Wi Fi acces in the new building's upper floor. Construction still ongoing, so you live on a construction site. Extremely low water pressure. Slow service - waiting for more than 15 minutes to receive our quite small breakfast and even 15 additional minutes get our drinks served.

Review 17:Spacious new rooms - if you stay in the new building behind the main building. We have been allowed to alter our reservation for a very small charge only.

Review 18:Some staff was a little "pushy" to sell stuff. He wanted us to rent a tuktuk driver to go and see the ruins while we told him we'd rather rent a bicycle. He still kept telling us that a tuktuk would be so much better. The rest of the staff was very friendly and helpfull and told us which busses to take out of the city.

Review 19:Nice location to go and see the ruins. Easy to rent a bicycle at this place.

Review 20:the cheaper rooms have unfeeling design, just white walls;

Review 21:cosy, nice restaurant with friendly personal, helpful and they organize tours; the food tasts good but it is spiced for Europeans;

Review 22:The rooms were not really clean and there were a lot of mosquitos. They have to clean more!

Review 23:It is a really nice guest house in a great location, the staff is really friendly, we stayed in the new part of the house and the rooms were new and spacious.

Review 24:they were trying to sell you some kind of offers and pull you into deals with some tuk tuk drivers. They were not able to take a tea/coffee order without getting this totally mixed up. Had no plan about what we consumed and what not. Wifi was only in the public area. It was more of a hostel feeling instead of a guesthouse.

Review 25:the fact that the guesthouse was just around the corner from the ruins and the possiblity to rent cycles (300 rupees each). Spacious room and nice view (if you book the rooms in the new building).

Review 26:I was lured with the $18 room only to find it gruesome and had to pay $28 instead. The owner does not make any deals but it was a lovely room and the muddy garden reconstruction will end soon. No wifi in room so inconvenient. Loud music next door but not at night.

Review 27:The room was new and beautiful with a view of ricefields and the bathroom lovely with a real shower door!

Review 28:Wifi only in the common area. They let a tuk tuk driver negotiate with you about a cheaper entry to the ancient city. He tells you he has an agreement with the gate security and thus you can save approx. 1000, plus he takes you around on his tuk tuk. It's a way of cheating, and you cannot get to the sites, where they check tickets (museum, Gal Vihara). Better skip this offer.

Review 29:Close to the ancient city site. We were the only ones staying in the old part, which has cheaper rooms, but it was quite OK with nice garden view balcony. Good shower. Good breakfast (the usual toast, egg, butter, jam, plus fruits!) We had a great day discovering Polonnaruwa on rented bikes.

Review 30:My first room smelled bad but I could change easiely. They get the bikes from a shop nearby and everybody pays another price for the bikes - they should have a fixed price for guests.

Review 31:Nice common area. Nice view.

Review 32:Too many mosquitoes

Review 33:The staff here are nice and location also good! Food is delicious and the manager helped us a lot, even went with us to trincomaiee to help us find the hotel to stay! Highly recommend this place~

Review 34:The food was ok, they sell beer also. The staff are friendly, the place is safe. The cleanliness was just about ok. It can get very damp in the room. They hire bikes and the location is convenient to visit the sites. WiFi only works in communal area.

Review 35:Water was little more than a trickle from the shower maybe because our room was upstairs. otherwise all was great.

Review 36:The owner greeted us warmly with a welcome drink and our room was ready promptly. Big comfortable room with modern bathroom amenities and a great view over the rice fields. They served lovely food at a reasonable price.

Review 37:Need more staff. Staff struggled to cope with the volume of guests. Free breakfast a shambles because too many people waiting to eat. Sri lankan breakfast options more difficult to access. New building at back of block already suffering from heavy traffic and inability to care for it. Grubby marks on walls, stains on new mattresses as there are no mattress covers. Tiny, torn sheet on my single bed wouldn't stay on, and I ended up sleeping on the bare mattress. Had to dissuade staff from putting still - wet sheets on the beds on arrival. Pressure to take safaris and tuktuk tours.

Review 38:Close to museum end of polonnaruwa ruins. Close to strip of good local restaurants. New rooms in building at back of block with good hot showers and comfortable new beds. Nice terrace areas in front of both buildings. Surrounded by rice fields on three sides.

Review 39:when I first arrived.. the rooms are not ready... linen not cleaned... toilets not clean.. had to lift the belonging alltheway up to the room by ourself. so on...

Review 40:none

Review 41:Wi-fi speed was terrible. But it may be a problem of the system and not hotel. I suspect bandwidth is badly taxed. Like other SL hotels - greatly overpriced for what you get.

Review 42:Nice people, nice room, about as good a breakfast as we've received in SL hotels. Close to commercial area (banks, shops).

Review 43:Room not cleaned during our 3-night stay, many mosquitoes, shower pressure weak, no soap

Review 44:Easy to get to archaeological sites, friendly owner, bicycles available

Review 45:The room (in the old part) was not as described on Booking. No table, no chair, no mosquito net, the support of the matrass bed was broken. We had to ask for soap and towels. We felt cheated.

Review 46:The guest house is at walking distance from the ancient city.

Review 47:The room wasn't as as expected from the photos. It was very basic, there was a hole in the ceiling in the bathroom. There were no towels or even toilet paper provided. The windows were dirty and there were flies squashed all over the wall. We were also unsure about the area around the guest house. Having said that, the price of a room is very cheap so you can't expect the world for £12.50!

Review 48:The staff were good.

Review 49:- no wifi in rooms - doors in the old section have opaque door which is very weird for a hotel room door... You can see shadows and light but i didnt feel uncomfortable

Review 50:-balcony overlooking rice fields and sunset - clean marble floors -close to sights -bike rental - beer and food available -delicious homecooked food you can buy for dinner - breakfast included was substantial

Review 51:Sometimes they rent good rooms to other guests but adjust it quickly

Review 52:The proprietor is an excellent person. He tries to look everything with smiling face.

Review 53:No ventilation in washroom except opening window to mosquitoes and salamanders. Mold starting to creep in the new washroom. No Wi-Fi in ooms. Have to sit outside for Wi-Fi.

Review 54:A simple tuktuk away from train and bus. Happy to be on a more quiet road. Close to Museum and Fort complex. Rent a bike. Newer section of hotel. Very clean.

Review 55:Was very wet when we were there & rooms were full of mozzies, we had no net. Very thin sheet & no blanket so we were a little cold at night.

Review 56:Good location, nice staff, great base to hire bikes & explore the ruins.

Review 57:Guest house needs some improvement - repainting.

Review 58:Manel and his team are very friendly, ready to help you whenever. Good location for UNESCO heritage sites and elephants safari.

Review 59:Thee food is ok, but not excellent.

Review 60:The hostel is right in the centre of Polonnaruwa with a nice view over de fields. There are enough bicycles in the garden to bring you to the ancient sites.

Review 61:For distracted people who don't read all the description.. no shower towels. They close the gate really early, and there is no way to get back in! The room looked really old and needing a lot of improvements. (mosquito net was full os holes, shower tap felt, the door would only close if key locked)

Review 62:Manel, the owner, is just amazing! The team is vey gentle and nice. We were truly impressed by the way we were treated. The room is really basic but clean, but I was not expecting much more for the price. Breakfast is good. Nice simple outside area.

Review 78:Position was good. Staff was friendly. Good quality/price

Review 79:Very, very dirty. Food is bad.

Review 82:Location friendly staff

Review 83:Wifi and aircon intermittent

Review 84:Bike rental 300 rupees a day, helpful friendly staff

Review 85:Hire a bike here (cheap) and ride to the museum and all the historic sites. Easy!

Review 86:wifi only in common areas

Review 87:The staff was very nice. Cozy dining area overlooking garden. they're renting bikes on site.

Review 88:Not clean and still under construction. Very low shower pressure.

Review 89:Location close to all. The guest house was very quite.

Review 90:Mosquito net is too small.

Review 91:Helpful staff that advised us in the best way to visit the ruins.

Review 92:room

Review 93:The food! large quantities for the prices too!

Review 94:- Staff seems to be annoyed by the guests - Tonnes of insects all around - Bed linen with some strange spots on it

Review 95:- Bicycle rent

Review 96:Wifi only on reception and hall

Review 97:Good position, 4minutes by hycicle from ancient city. Good safari arranged by hotel.

Review 98:i don't like the breakfast,

Review 99:i like the parking area, and the room is perfect,

Review 100:Weak wifi inside room
