Reviews for Thisara Guest House
Review 1:Room small, dingy and rundown. Cardboard for glass, powerlines in arms length of kids from balcony, sheets too small for bed, overall would not recommend for family.
Review 2:Not much to like.
Review 3:None of the windows closed properly and there was a large gap under the door to the outside, letting in bugs galore. Staff response - all rooms like this!
Review 4:Location and food were good.
Review 5:The place was run down; there were too many dogs making noise at night; there could be better basic amenities like fresh white towels, perhaps a cupboard and dresser would be good.
Review 6:The staff were friendly
Review 7:We have spent here Christmas time. It was a wonderful stay. This guest house have an ideal position in Arugam bay. One of the main advantages is hospitality of the staff. They were very nice! Tasty breakfasts and dinners :-). Is here also possibility of surfing lessons with experienced teacher. Many thanks :-D
Review 8:I had not realized from the website that AC rooms were available. A good service would be help assuring that the trishaw driver does not overcharge for ride to the bus stand.
Review 9:The room was very nice and the staff extraordinarily pleasant and helpful. The veranda is very comfortable. The view is lovely.
Review 10:The rooms/bathrooms were a bit run down with fixtures coming off walls, it was quite damp and the double bed was made with a series of single sheets which was interesting to navigate! Could do with a spruce up.
Review 11:The owners were very helpful in organising bikes for us, discussing dinner options (dinner was amazing every night, just have to tell them early in the day you want it), and booking a driver to take us to our next location. The view over the rice paddy fields was beautiful also.
Review 12:About 2x2m section of the wall had mold, which was covered (badly) by a paining Due to a very low power bulb, room is dark The odd insect, but then that's expected from a garden room.
Review 13:Close enough to the ruins if using a bicycle. WiFi was great Breakfast was prompt and good considering the price paid. Good to eat with a garden view Friendly and helpful staff Mosquito net for hiding from insects
Review 14:Air conditioner too expensive
Review 15:Lovely garden. Lady is really kind and gentle. Not too far from archeological site anyway they have bikes for rent. Good food. I love having breakfast and dinner there.
Review 16:We stayed only one night, the place is not far from the town but you should take tuck-tuck or bike. The girl who is owner is very nice and frendly, she gave us bicycle ( for free) and arrange tuck-tuck for us to go to Dambulla for good price.Comfortable bed, clean, very good Wi-Fi.Thank you
Review 17:This was a good value for money guesthouse. I managed to book the only room without aircon though which meant it was a bit hot but that was my mistake. The location is good - along the main road where most of the guesthouses are and has a nice view over the rice fields. The room was basic and bathroom basic too with the occasional frog and lizard visitor! We took the bikes out and were told they were free but then realised after we'd paid the bill that we'd been charged for the rental. We would have been happy to pay for it anyway, but just gives you a feeling of being a bit ripped off. We had curry & rice for dinner one evening which was nice and the staff were happy to help us with arrangements for an elephant safari and arranged a driver to take us to Trincomalle as there was a bit of confusion over the trains.
Review 18:We loved our stay at Thisara. Probably the best B&B we've been to in Sri Lanka. Nice and clean room/bathroom, cute terrasse, beautiful view to the rize fields, relaxed atmosphere, professional and friendly staff, great welcome (with a delicious fresh juice), good wifi connection, good food, convenient location (max 500m from the ruins/temples).
Review 19:The food situation is a bit strange. It appears they cook rice and curry for people, however it was never explained to us that this needed to be ordered earlier in the day maybe? Twice we tried to order food at 6pm and were told we could only have fried rice? And there was nothing else available, when all the other guests were given huge portions of rice and curry - we all had to eat at the same time (7.30-8pm) So when it says they have a chef on hand to cook western or Sri Lankan food 'on request' this is not the case Another couple staying at the resort were given fried rice as well with a small amount of leftover Dhal curry and were told there was no beer available (as other guests had already ordered it - about 4 bottles) They don't tell you the price of the food either, a lot more expensive than most other places.
Review 20:Close to ruins Nice location, looking over rice paddies Rooms were big Nice patio area Good wifi - think we were next to the modem. The staff invited is over to join the family birthday party they were having for the little girl Ovindee! They have us lots of party food and cake which was lovely.
Review 21:avoid bicycle rent in the hotel, which has bad conditions! you can rent at nearly everywhere in the town.
Review 22:staff is helpful environment is good with gardens and easy to meet other travellers. water flow is large enough compared to hotels in other places in srilanka
Review 23:I had the family room on the second level. The bathroom was very dirty with a non closing window. This particular room had No mosquito nets. When i pointed that to the front deal, they said ac and 2nd level would keep them away. We NEVER had so many bites! Very bad wifi and staff always hard to find. Room was never cleaned In 3 days. Worst hotel i got In Sri Lanka
Review 24:Calm location
Review 25:Unfortunately we didn't have the chance to taste the rice&curry. Our dinner was average.
Review 26:Nice location with beautiful view on the rice fields. Breakfast was good and very helpful and friendly staff.
Review 27:Not very clean room (eufemism), insects, no plece to put the suitcase and clothes. The surrounding is not very attractive (eufemism).
Review 28:Can´t remember anything. Maybe breakfast.
Review 29:WiFi did not work most of the time, and the place could have been cleaner. For breakfast they served was must have been an omlette made out of half an egg. Food was overpriced. They were given a full address of the next place I needed to go, however they gave the tuk tuk driver the address of another guest house, belonging to their friend.
Review 30:I did not use this - but they do have a couple of bikes you can rent.
Review 31:There were absolutely no problems. They even brought mosquito coil to porch so we could enjoy the birds and bats flying in the evening.
Review 32:Our only regret was our stay was so short! The setting is a beautiful garden overlooking the rice paddies. The room immaculate, with a comfy bed, and hot shower. The breakfast was plentiful and delicious. The location an easy walk to World Heritage site. The staff even made sure that our tuk driver got us to the bus station on time,
Review 33:The room wasn't really clean. This was mainly a downside for the bathroom. Here also some shelves and hooks were crooked and couldn't be used. The room was big, however not a lot of places to put your suitcases on. And this was needed, since there were many bugs!
Review 34:The guesthouse is nicely situated and located. Staff was really helpful and friendly.
Review 35:Nothing. This is a basic, but comfortable place to stay
Review 36:This is a basic guesthouse, with a pretty garden. We had a large room with a front terrace opening onto the garden. It was clean and cool. It is in a good location for visiting the ancient city. We rented bikes for the day. They were not fantastic, but they did the job and we're only 250 Rs. The owners were friendly and helpful. Dinner was basic, but tasty and easy.
Review 37:Not as great as made out in the pictures! Suggest remove the bananna trees so that the rooms have a view over the rice paddy.
Review 38:Overall a relaxing and enjoyable experience staying here. Had a great time and the staff were great and friendly. Helped in every way possible. The location to the ruins is perfect - and the bicycles from the hotel also perfect to explore. The food was great too - especially given the small number of guests
Review 39:We stayed in Thisara guest house for two days and were very satisfied with almost everything in the hotel. Nice location, very nice garden, comfortable rooms and nice and helpful staff. Excellent comparison price/quality.
Review 40:One of the loveliest places I've ever stayed in. The rooms are beautiful and the setting just harmonize the soul. The pictures really don't do the setting justice - the location of Thisara Guest House is set by a greenish paddy field just outside the restaurant area. The Restaurant is gorgeous too - you could sit in there all day (I sat in there and finished a whole books during my stay) the staff are all lovely and Mr.Mahesh the guy who runs is just a legend. Gentle, efficient, amazing service. Honestly I would recommend Thisara Guest House. The staff's response to minor issues was exemplary: the service follow-up was most commendable. Thisara Gust House one of the the best place I ate and stayed, by a considerable margin.
Review 41:We spend one night at this guesthouse to visit the ancient city of polonaruwa. The guesthouse has a beautiful garden and very nice and comfortable rooms. The manager and his wife are very friendly and helpful, they advices us to visit polonaruwa by bike and we spent a great afternoon (you can rent bikes at the guesthouse) Furthermore, we ate one of the best currys of Sri Lanka as dinner. And the most amazing and kind thing: I forgot my earrings in the room and they send it to me within two days without extra costs. I am sure the thisara guesthouse is the most friendly and lovely place to stay in Polonaruwa!
Review 42:Room not very clean, with bad smell coming from the bathroom. Not the best deal, but not awful room either. Dinner very long to serve (more than 30mn to get two sprite)
Review 43:The small garden and restaurant in front of rice fields, free wifi
Review 44:Very kind owners and staff, tasty food, beautiful location with great views of rice paddies. It is also very close to ancient city of Polonnaruwa, you can hire a bike (300 rp, 7/2014) and cycle whole area.
Review 45:Many mosquitos after dark because of the adjacent rice field.

Review 96:Proximity of rice fields attracts lots of mosquitoes yet there are no mosquito nets in the rooms. We spent half a night hunting but got badly bitten by mosquitoes anyway. I can't decide how to rate the food - my partner hated it (except of the fruit from the owners' garden, they were delicious), I found it average.
Review 97:Conveniently located, surrounded by beautiful rice fields. Decent rooms.
Review 98:Very friendly staff, peaceful location of the rooms overlooking the rice fields. Breakfast and lunch were tasty. The rent for the bikes was very cheap and the bikes were in a good condition. As we couldn't get a tuktuk to bring us to the bus station on New Year's Eve, the owner drove us for free in his car.
Review 99:Nothing I could find, it was only a one night stay
Review 100:Excellent service by the staff, serviced in a personalized fashion (appreciation goes to Mr. Mahesh & the staff). Spacious comfortable rooms, right next to a beautiful paddy field, Nice and cozy environment as compared to other hotels around. Dinner is superbly delicious.Reasonable price for the single traveler, but certainly worth a one-night stay. Felt a Homely ambience !!!
