Reviews for Shakespeare Hotel
Review 1:Patchy WiFi, shuttle required to get to info centre or any pistes (but this seems to be the case with most of in Happo One
Review 2:Extremely helpful staff, although limited English spoken they go to great lengths to help you with any enquiry. Good drying room/lockers for kit, restaurants nearby.
Review 3:From getting to the ski fields, to changing my bus/train tickets - the help we got was really good. Great location, close to plenty of dining options too
Review 4:U have to be on time so u won't miss the bus! :)
Review 5:My birthday week was awesome! Hotel staff was great! They would drop us off to the ski area, restaurant and bus station which not all hotel does. Feels like home knowing that one of the staff is from where I am. Very accommodating owners. The place may not be that modernized as the hotel name implies, but the comfort of home and hospitality of the people complements it. Place is near the ski resort too!
Review 6:That smoky smell - although we were moved to a less smoky room. Beds very hard and uncomfortable.
Review 7:Amazing staff! We were pretty much the only guests, and we were treated like a king and queen! Location is good! Breakfast was good!
Review 8:everyone in the area knows where and what this place is, meaning wherever you are in hakuba, you can easily find your way back here! staff are super nice and has all the facilities you need to stay for weeks on end!
Review 9:No on-site onsen, but free tickets to use the public one just around the corner.
Review 10:The casual lounge area where we would meet for drinks and to catch up about our day, with our large group of 11, as well as others staying in the hotel. Excellent value breakfast.
Review 11:There was a lot of noise from outside in the middle of the night, even though the nearby bars and restaurants were closed. The rooms were not particularly nice or comfortable for the amount of money I spent, and the location was quite inconvenient for all of the ski areas. It might be better during the main season, but most of the shuttles had stopped running, so if you weren't done by 4:00 you had to take a taxi or walk a very long way with your gear.
Review 12:Staff was extremely friendly and helpful, and were fluent English speakers. They were able to recommend onsens, rental companies, restaurants, call taxis, etc. and went above and beyond to make guests feel welcome and comfortable.
Review 13:No pick-up service from the Happo bus terminal. Noisy at night even waking me up at 2:30 AM.
Review 14:The instructions for catching different bus to various resorts are clear. The hotel has a ski-rental shop.
Review 15:Would prefer more regular room make-up service, rather than once every three days on request.
Review 16:Staff unfailingly helpful and friendly. Good location for nightlife. Free use of nearby onsen.
Review 17:The room we had was very very smoky. We had to leave the windows in the room open during the day to get the smell out. We think it's because people smoke near the filter unit to the rooms heating facilities (owner is a smoker). It's a little run down but its fine if you're not expecting to stay at the Hilton or the likes.
Review 18:Staff were helpful, the rooms are very big, nice hot water and enough room to hang your snow gear out to dry. Drying room was great also.
Review 19:They offered to pick us up from the bus station and then reneged. The stink of cigarettes is disgusting. There are very restrictive times when the free shuttle buses leave for the slopes so we got quite a few taxis.
Review 20:Staff were gorgeous and above and beyond. Close to lovely restaurants and fun bars!
Review 21:I booked 3 double rooms for 5 people and then agreed with him by email that we could vary it to a triple and a double - but he still charged me for 3 double rooms I.e. 6 people - greedy
Review 22:Front desk staff were excellent
Review 23:We didn't have any problems during our 6 day stay
Review 24:The staff were only too willing to answer our questions and to help with bus schedules and making reservations at local restaurants. The inclusive breakfast was a very good way to start a day of skiing and the free WiFi was an added bonus. The shuttle buses picked up and dropped off right outside the hotel.
Review 25:breakfast was somewhat repetative, but that was only after staying more than a week...
Review 26:the location was great, walking distance to happo-one and with free buses that ran to 47/goyru right out front. the happo visitors centre was also only a 10-15min walk away. also, the wireless internet was fast and trouble-free.
Review 27:Opening welcome.....You must pay NOW! Followed by NO UPGRADE.We had not asked for one. Being suspicious I asked if I paid more? HOTEL FULLY BOOKED ALL ROOMS SAME. It was not full but soon realized where Mr Falty was coming from. The room was minute and stunk of smoke.I had requested non smoking. Breakfast was same each day.
Review 28:The area is good.
Review 29:Staff very friendly. Comfort hotel. The entire staff was able to speak english. They had lots of things for breakfast. Half was occidental, half japanese
Review 30:Bad odour as you enter the lobby. Continuous smoking smell in the room and throughout the hotel at all times. Unfriendly Manager. Room not cleaned unless requested. Only cleaned once in 7 days. Badly stained couch in bedroom.
Review 31:Location Shower
Review 32:Located a long way from resorts with infrequent shuttles operating. Snow allowed to build up from roadway to entrance which made entering and leaving property dangerous at times. Could only pay for breakfast on a daily basis and had to be in cash.
Review 33:Great free wifi, good size room and no smell of smoke. Towels were small but very absorbent.
Review 34:Bed was very uncomfortable, room often became very hot with the heating, room was also located over a walkway which would get covered in snow and slippery. Poor breakfast, hot water inconsistent - wouldn't stay here again.
Review 35:Location was great - bus stop to ski resorts was located right outside the hotel, which had a range of restaurants nearby.
Review 36:Most stinky hotel i have ever been in, the lobby smells like a toilet with open drainage boot. The Hotel is presented to be noon smoking but the room smell as somone is constantly smoking (might be the staff). There are some information that I was not aware of until I was leaving, they only clean the rooms upon request and they did not inform about that when ceck in,( it is written on information desk in the lobby). They have check out at 10.00 am that was written in the booking and I did not notice so when I was checking out at 12.00 as I do usualy in hotel all around the world I got fine for 5000 Yen and only in Cash. For that Visa was not expected. I did claim to the staff and the answer was to claim on the internet because the hotel boss do not listen to them as there guests are giving similiar comments as I came up with so here it is.
Review 37:The breakfast was average and the staff there friendly and it was in separeate building so it was not stinky.
Review 38:all rooms had old small single beds, the carpet in the rooms was so dirty the towels were small and worn around the reception desk there was always a bad smell the breakfast was pretty bad
Review 39:the rooms were fairly warm and there was a sitting area outside
Review 40:Room did smell smoky. Shuttle service unavailable due to being understaffed, so unable to be picked up or dropped off at Hakuba station. Breakfast buffet overpriced.
Review 41:Good location close to restaurants, shops, rentals and onsen. Quiet at night even though hotel was busy. Shuttle bus for mountains in front of hotel. Dry room with 2 lockers per room.
Review 42:From the reviews, we knew what we were getting into. The room smelled like smoke. Even though we were told there is a shuttle service from Hakuba station and to call upon arrival, when we called we were told the hotel is understaffed and unable to pick us up. We were told the same thing when we asked about a shuttle to the station. The buffet breakfast was not worth 1000 yen. We went down the street to Sounds Like Cafe and had an amazing breakfast with generous portions at almost half the price.
Review 43:The hotel is close to restaurants, convenience stores and ski shops. There was a free onsen within a 5 minute walk. It had an old chalet feel and met our needs. There is also a shuttle stop for the various mountains right out front of the hotel.
Review 44:Uncomfortable bed, slight smokey smell throughout hotel.
Review 45:Friendly staff, great location (resort shuttles stop in front of the hotel), good price, hot strong showers.
Review 46:Nothing of note to complain about. I was happy with everything.
Review 47:Really nice staff at a great location in Ecoland. Simple hotel. Very last minute trip and Shakespeare was all that was available so I had no expectations but definitely very pleasantly surprised. Dan and Vicki at the front desk are really nice and really helpful people; Dave at the ski rental located at the premises too - very helpful. Just minutes away from a few eating places and bars. Ski shuttle stops right outside. Other guests during my stay we're awesome friendly people too. So traveling alone didn't become so boring. Would definitely stay again!
Review 48:A little outdated but very cosy all the same Buses to and from slopes weren't very direct had to change at the bus terminal which is annoying with all your equipment. Had to get a taxi a couple of days as we waited a long time for the bus, but that is a reflection on the bus service and not the hotel's fault
Review 49:Staff were very friendly and helpful Very handy location near shops and restaurants, echoland was lovely at nighttime all lit up Drying room for ski/snowboard equipment Rooms very warm and cosy Free wifi Free shuttle bus to slopes The owner was so friendly and helpful, making reservations, ringing taxis etc.
Review 50:No cleaning even staying for 4 nights. Our baby found glass shard on the floor in our room.
Review 51:Staff are friendly & go beyond duty to help when we have a car malfunction.
Review 52:Needs a refurbishment Smells of smoke No housekeeping in our room for the three days we were there
Review 53:Fast internet Great location Friendly and helpful staff Comfortable Good value for money Great drying room
Review 54:Door slamming by other travellers in the hotel.
Review 55:Friendly and helpful staff. With onsite ski rental and a near-by ski school pick-up and drop off.
Review 56:Smell of cigarettes
Review 57:Shuttle location, helpful staff, value 4 money
Review 58:Best location in Echoland with shuttle stop right outside. Rooms dated but perfectly functional and fine for our skiing family.
Review 59:Great location for shuttle buses and restaurants.
Review 60:Location was a bit remote
Review 61:The staff was very helpful
Review 62:bad location- about 25 minutes walk from Happo Bus Terminal
Review 63:lovely atmosphere like English countryside
Review 64:Cleanliness and very old building just smells like someone has farted all the time. Sounds cheap but it is a rip off
Review 65:Position
Review 66:The location was good , staff were friendly and helpful , would come back again for sure
Review 67:Needs more drying room space, bedroom became a bit of a laundry.
Review 68:Massage centre close by, location
Review 69:bus to happo was sometimes crowded, but crowd was friendly.
Review 70:Location, staff and value for money.
Review 71:Rooms are quite old and there were several stains on the carpet in our room.
Review 72:Location is very good nearby two large ski hills. Staff was very helpful.
Review 73:Staff we're very helpful and went out of their way to help. I even left my iPad and they brought it down to the station for me.
Review 74:Being isolated from the train station without a shuttle service.
Review 75:Friendly staff
Review 76:Room and upstairs smelt like cigarette smoke.
Review 77:Helpful staff.
Review 78:Good value for money. Helpful front desk guy.
Review 79:Room smelled like smoke is the only complaint.
Review 80:We feel we got good value for money. The room was comfortable, the front desk was helpful and there was a free sauna ticket for every day. The location is really good, within walking distance to shops, rental gear, and restaurants. We were very happy with out stay.
Review 81:There was often a lingering cigarette smell in the common areas, but then Japan has a much more relaxed smoking culture than Australia.
Review 82:Staff friendly and helpful. Rooms generously sized and well appointed which is good when you're there for several nights and have a load of ski gear to manage. The Shakespeare theme is faithfully carried to room names such as Romeo & Juliet, and Othello. Charming. Good Onsen down the road, and tickets were included in room cost.
Review 83:Very helpful staff, and you couldn't get a better location in Echoland... the buses to the slopes stop right outside your door. There's a bar and restaurants also on your doorstep. Would highly recommend if you are a westerner with tattoos as the owner also owns a public onsen down the road, and he allows you free entry for staying at the hotel. I was very concerned when reading forums on this taboo issue before I went, but the owner assured me it would be fine for me to enter his public baths.
Review 84:The staff were outstanding. There was a very friendly Australian girl who also spoke Japanese, which was very useful when making reservations. The shuttle bus stop was directly in front of the hotel and there were cafes, rental shops and bars all within a 200m radius
Review 85:We found the bed to be hard & uncomfortable. We had a 'non smoking room' but the smell of cigarettes would often drift into our room. Towels aren't changed unless you ask.
Review 86:Great location on the main street of Echoland, heaps of restaurants & a convenience store in close walking distance & the free shuttle buses to the various slopes stop right out the front of the hotel! Large rooms, but a bit dated. Staff are helpful, happy to book restaurants, taxis etc. Two lockers per room in the drying room to store your ski stuff. Small fridge and couch in the room, plenty of hanging space.
Review 87:- Really friendly staff - Location is close to ski slopes - Located right next to equipment hire and restaurants. - Great air conditioning. - Very cosy
Review 88:Internet was haphazard.
Review 89:We cannot recommend this hotel strongly enough if you are Antipodean and can go Skiing in the middle of January! It is located in a perfect spot in Ecoland, Hakuba. The Office staff cannot do enough to assist you, the rooms are cosy, warm, single beds but more than adequate assuming you just need a place to recover from the days on the mountain. The drying room is top notch, the feel of the place is homely, classy yet extremely modest at a century short of a grand for 7 nights for a couple! Right next door is the breakfast area with a superb range of Japanese and western options at a grand yen a person. Also next door, an extremely cheap ski hire centre (which currently has no web presence) with prices displayed in the hotel foyer - ten grand yen for six days S.B.P is extremely competitive! An awesome Sumo restaurant and Japanese food restaurants are within 2 mins of the hotel. BUT the absolute advantage is the FREE bus !! stop to ALL the skiing locations in Hakuba is within 20 metres of the hotels front door! - what more could you want! (Well maybe for the Japanese to re-work the bus riding concept - you carry all your ski gear onto the buses - buses designed for our smaller Asian cousins not strapping Antipodeans - wait until you experience the crush!!). The hotel is 10 mins bus ride from Hakuba 47, Imori and Goryu Plaza ski resorts and about the same to Happo-One and the Happo Info centre where you can pick up buses to other nearby ski locations. Best 'learn to ski' option is by far Tsugaike (plenty of red runs while the kids are in lessons!), then Imori. FINALLY - go to Hakuba in the 2nd or 3rd week in January - there is simply no-one there! The Japanese are all at school or at work - you have numerous mountains / ski runs to yourself - not a queue anywhere!! And the snow - dry, thick and plenty of powder!! The hotel and the town - hidden gems (well, until now anyway)!
Review 90:If your a non-smoker like me - there something about the building that funnels cigaret smoke through out the building - especially in the rooms very strong and unpleasant - maybe they should ban smoking in the building or provide a vent elated smoking or lounge area....
Review 91:Great staff support - excellent reasonably priced buffet breakfast - ski shop and other resteraunts next door - 5 mins walk or shorted bus ride from happo 1 slopes - top location for a skiing holiday
Review 92:Nothing - but I would say that the rooms are a bit tired and basic for the price (we paid approx $150/night for a twin room). However, the staff, location and amazing free onsen round the corner more than made up for this.
Review 93:The staff were absolutely fantastic and would go out of their way to help you. Location was great and a bit more laid back than the centre of Happo; plus there were buses to all ski fields from right outside the front door. Oh and the shower was great! I would definitely go back.
Review 94:Not a problem for us, but just a note that there is no housekeeping, soyou need to ask for clean towels and make your own bed.
Review 95:Fab little hotel on the main street. Homely feel and good facilitiesE.G. Dry room for skis etc. Amazingly helpful staff. Just a quick phonecall from the train station and they picked us up free of charge. Theyalso rang to help us book dinner reservations and were generallyawesome. Free shuttle bus to go to ski resorts stops right outside.
Review 96:Paid more than last years hotel because it was SUPPOSED to be a non-smoking hotel, the staff smoked in the office behind the reception desk and the smell went right through the place. They would put out the smokes when I complained and then light up again after I left. I never saw a guest smoking in the hotel. Had to use a towel to seal the gap under the room door and open a window every day to reduce the smell, headaches and sinus problems every night though.
Review 97:Location was the best thing about the hotel, facilities were just basic hotel stuff but OK, ski hire place next door was great and shuttle bus stop right outside, also great.
Review 98:Although I had no problems I think the hotel is probably ore suited to young travellers than families. If you visit in high season make sure you make dinner reservations as everywhere gets booked up.
Review 99:Its good for the restaurants and bars in Echoland although I preferred Happo which is a 10 minute walk away. The staff were helpful and the breakfast adequate but nothing special.
Review 100:The receptionist
Review 101:Pillows could be more comfortable
Review 102:Dean top bloke was the reason I went back
Review 103:poor drying rooms. Changing of linen not done, especially towells
Review 104:Friendly helpful staff. Breakfast In house restaurent
Review 105:Blood stains and dirty everything
Review 106:Proximity to happo one
