Reviews for Cambridge Hotel

Review 1:Mattress was way too soft - we sunk in the bed and kept rolling into the middle all night.

Review 2:Clean, good location, had everything we needed. Loved the heritage look that they have maintained.

Review 3:The dorm I stayed in for the one night was like a massive party, which I did not mind but the people staying in the room had no respect for others and split beer all over my bed.

Review 4:The evening staff was fantastic and helpful.

Review 5:Nothing bad - except for the sporadically working lift

Review 6:Location was outstanding. Room was comfortable, clean, modern. Was concerned about noise level, as we stayed on a Saturday night - but absolutely no problems with noise! They were happy to store my bags all the next day as well and they kindly gave us a much needed late check out. Great place to stay - definitely will be my number one choice for accommodation, next time I am in Wellington.

Review 7:Have to hunt for parking in coupon area overnight. Traffic noise but we expected that.

Review 8:Great price, for room and $3 breakfast option. Close to TePapa and buses.

Review 9:The lift was old but added to the character. The menu was very basic. .

Review 10:I found this hotel to be charming, with beautifully renovated bathrooms. There was three of us in one room and we were not cramped. Beautiful big windows and friendly helpful staff. Just loved it. Great Location.

Review 11:- Not so friendly staff - Small bedroom - Old bedroom

Review 12:- Very good location - Big kitchen but small "living room" - Clean -TV in the bedroom

Review 13:Window in the bedroom was very loose and didn't close securely, so had a terrible nights sleep while it blew a gale outside. Cold and extremely noisy.

Review 14:Location perfect and good value for money.

Review 15:They took our booking for a room that was already water damaged. There was a plate of half eaten food on the unmade bed. They couldn't offer us another room. We were left with no accommodation at 11pm on a Saturday night. The hotel made no effort or offers to amend this situation.

Review 16:The location and price if we could have had the room we booked. If only.

Review 17:The shower was leaking and there was water on the floor most of the time. My bed was very soft and it squeaked a lot.

Review 18:Private room with basin, fridge, kettle, tea/coffee and TV. Superb location, walking distance to everything. Good bistro food and breakfast.

Review 19:The 'King' bed was two singles pushed together. Quite uncomfortable. Bathroom needs maintenance as the door didn't close properly. I stayed at better places for cheaper.

Review 20:Convenient location, but that's not saying much in Wellington. It was clean.

Review 21:Working in the same industry I would say pay more attention when vaccuming specially under and behind the beds

Review 22:Really good location - around the corner from Courtnay Place and close to Te Papa

Review 23:If I had to comment on anything it would be the noise from the bar, BUT, they are very clear about that both on the booking and at the hotel. It doesn't go on that late, and even if you're directly above it (as I was) a good pair of ear plugs are sufficient.

Review 24:It was perfect for the budget and a great location. They even service the single rooms with new sheets each night, which is a nice touch, given its primarily a backpackers. The room is very clean on arrival, and in room facilities are modern. Just remember, this is primarily a backpackers, you're not getting 70sqm :-D

Review 25:A need for a little maintenance in the en suite bathroom. Hooks for clothes, a mirrror at a suitable height and a less noisy extractor fan.

Review 26:Good locality, historic, comfortable and good friendly service. Great value.

Review 27:Handy as had toilet and shower area near room but lots of water lying round may have been a leak

Review 28:Lovely very helpful staff Nice décor in rooms and hallways. Comfy beds.

Review 29:The bathroom size was very small.... Very small basin ... Very tight shower! Cups weren't clean enough and the mattress was just OK.

Review 30:This hotel is located in a very good spot.

Review 31:There should be better control of the number of occupants of the room, I was in a 4 bed dorm. In the middle of the night, I was woken up by the girl sleeping on the bunkbed above me, it turned out she was not alone and having sex. In addition, her partner fell out of the bunk straight on the floor. In the early morning, when I complained, staff said I should have come at once to inform them, as soon as I became aware.A very realistic option when it's middle of the night and you're half asleep, half in shock to interrupt the "steamy" act, go down in pj's and inform staff...

Review 32:The location is brilliant.

Review 33:I loved the character of the building and it's sense of history. The Maori man on reception was extremely helpful, professional and pleasant. Although I didn't partake I loved the offer of a free barbecue if I bought a drink in the bar. I'll certainly return and recommend The Cambridge to others.

Review 34:Very old and dated. Hostel kitchen was disgusting. Needed to hire plates and cutlery. The place just needs to be updated.

Review 35:Good location, close to city center.

Review 36:Quite a popular little hotel. Amenities were clean and modern. Rooms not huge but for the few hours I would be sleeping, it was more than sufficient. Huge age range of clients using the accommodation!

Review 37:Unvacuumed stairs. View of the roof:( No lights on the second level in the hall ways on returning from the Elton John concert which was a bit scary. Needing to shift vehicle/parking facilities are odd.

Review 38:The friendly staff. The location. Warm, clean and cool furniture. Easy off road access.

Review 39:However, the sensor hallway light system turns off on the second floor way to quickly making it tricky to find your room if you are a long way from the bathroom or wherever the trigger is. I found myself 8n the dark a couple of times!! The showers and toilets were clean but the shower door on second floor doesn't close over the bath so the water flows onto the floor. Can be a bit dangerous for 8 month pregnant woman such as myself.

Review 40:Loved the style of the building and the warmth as you entered from the street due to the fire. Great that the single rooms had a good size TV. The bed was very comfortable with two pillows which was appreciated.

Review 41:The meals could have been of a higher standard, reasonable price but pretty slap dash - a simple things as butter for the toast.

Review 42:The convenience of the location - to buses around the city and to the airport. Reliving my experience of working there in 1969-70. No cigarette smoke and spilled beer in the bars and women in the "public" bar.

Review 43:The female shared bathroom facilities on the second floor are tired - taps that didn't work properly, bathscreen installed so you got a cold soaking while trying to turn on the shower over the bath. No mirror by the fixed hairdryer. This all led to a rather cold and disappointing ablutions experience! As they warned on the website - it is a noisy location.

Review 44:The bedroom was large and bed quite comfortable. The hotel is a bit faded but still has hints of its old grandeur. It was really good that there was a handbasin in the room. Also great that the website warned it was noisy, so I came prepared with earplugs to combat it.

Review 45:cleaners to check in the jug - electric jug in my room looked new - but had a lot of black flaky yuck in bottom I couldn't get rid of with a few rinsings and boilings - I didn't bother to notify staff for time frame.

Review 46:location, cleanliness, felt safe

Review 47:No facecloths supplied. Fell in the bathroom on wet floor. One chair for two people. Just could'nt get to sleep all night. Light went off twice during shower. Parking a bit of a problem.

Review 48:Price, but you get what you pay for I guess.

Review 49:Very cold in the room because of very old window frames. In our room it was almost as windy as in Wellington those days.So I couldn't even take a shower, was afraid of catching pneumonia. As for personnel, after cleaning I found my own intimate towel just thrown in the bathroom corner(instead of being on the rack with other towels) and there was only hotel towel on the rack.

Review 50:Good location,quite clean

Review 51:only a wee complaint, couldn't get a hairdryer, would like each room to have one

Review 52:we likes the close proximity to the shops, restaurants, public transport and the waterfront. the accomodation prices were the best in town for the WOW weekend the staff were excellent, very friendly and helpful we liked the availability of the restaurant for breakfast and dinner, the pizza was delicious and especially the prices

Review 53:Noisy on Cambridge Terrace, wished you had modern windows with double-glazing. Single spring mattress not of best comfort

Review 54:Central location Pub with cheap breakfast on ground floor

Review 55:Double bed was 2 singles pushed together. previous occupants make up spilled all over the window sills and the cups etc sticky and grimy!!

Review 56:Staff where excellent, very friendly and the overall vibe was great

Review 57:Some very loud guests. Also the housekeeping girl was kind of rude.

Review 58:Was really lucky with my roommates. Beds were fine, nice that there is a 24hr receptioniste service.

Review 59:Unfortunately had a room above the bar. Would have asked to change if other rooms were available. Hardly got any sleep although the bar did quieten to some extent from midnight.

Review 60:There wasn't a hairdryer in the room - however, if we asked, I'm sure they would have brought it to our room.

Review 61:Perfect location for us as it was very close to the Basin Reserve. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Room was clean with a massive TV on the wall - so decided to watch the RWC final in the room. Very close to the bus stop for the airport shuttle was a bonus.

Review 62:I did not have a bathroom in my room, I do not recall seeing this clearly when I made my booking, value for money if you have a bathroom, We had breakfast there also, did not think much of the food.

Review 63:I didn't like that there were only two power outlets in the 8 bed dorm. And the kitchen can use some updates to make it look more clean. i.e. paint, new counters and new stove top.

Review 64:The atmosphere was unique to the Cambridge Hotel. It had a very old-world feel with the right technologies.

Review 65:dirty, smelly, unclean and a unwelcoming atmosphere. the diningroom sofa was smelly and broken and allways dirty. i did not get anything but a ok bed for the money, and did not feel like hangin out at the hostel because of the small facilities and unclean kitchen. i have nerver lived at a worse hostel.

Review 66:good location and friendly staff.

Review 67:location, firendly service, special (booking.com) price discount .

Review 68:everything - location, service, price (special) friendly service - except the bed itself - which seemed to be nothing but the wire springs. Didn't sag but needed a thick mattress pad or some such.

Review 69:The one thing that I notice, as you walk into the hotel the carpet leading up the stairs were looking very worn. As first impression count. Bit of thought and creativity it can become quite welcoming.

Review 70:I like the rooms with the private toilet and bathroom. Clean and great for sole traveler. Felt quite at home with the decor and the rustic style of the wood and Windows that opened to full capacity.

Review 71:Very noisy location with traffic and noisy people. Shower in bathroom has inadequate shower curtain flooded bathroom floor. Bathroom in poor repair.

Review 72:Staff friendly and clean room

Review 73:Noisy street noise through the night because we were on the first floor.

Review 74:Close to town. Clean. Easy stay. If all you need is a bed, this is a good choice.

Review 75:The day before our stay we nearly needed to cancel the accomodation. However, the fee to do that was the exact same price as it was to stay there. That seems ridiculous, why even offer the option to cancel?!

Review 76:The location was fantastic. As a group of students it was just what we needed. It was a bit awkward sharing with strangers, but we did our own thing and had a great time.

Review 77:The heating is lighting. A bit impact on sleeping.

Review 78:Love this place. Great location. Only 10mins walk to the port. Very unique Cambridge decoration and I love the traditional manual operating elevator. So cool! There is a very cool bar downstairs can feel you like staying at 30's. Very cool!

Review 79:night noise from room, being clunking windows (had to chock with loo paper), and noisy fridge (not necessary so turned off and leaked), handbasin really hard to use for shaving as overshadowed by mirror cabinet and toothbrush holder.

Review 80:Food, cleanliness, locality, friendly staff

Review 81:Nothing to complain of for the price we paid.

Review 82:I liked the friendliness of the staff and the cleaniness and comfort of the hotel as well as the great location

Review 83:Sky TV pretty useless. (seems to be like that everywhere) poor quality and not enough channels. I could only get TV1 & 3 of free to air. The tea bags looked old and stale so I used my own.

Review 84:Walking distance to almost everything. secure room. great having tea & coffee facilities and fridge and basin.

Review 85:Very noisy street at night, drunk people shouting and yelling, Bit of a seedy part of town, not really family, ambulances and police all hours. Twin room heater 1 bar so cold and electric blanket not working. Shower tiles need extra clean.

Review 86:Walking distance to main venues or bus stop, Staff friendly, facility tidy, warm fire place on main entry, room adequate

Review 87:A gentleman taking breakfast orders and making coffees looked a bit overwhelmed with his task and came across not very polite.

Review 88:Value for money. Would stay again. Reception staff very polite and helpful. Room clean. TV in the room.

Review 89:The shower was very difficult to contain the water. Noisy from street passengers.

Review 90:The location and met our requirements of a bed for the night and good rates.

Review 91:The staff were very kind and helpful, I was flying out early in the morning and didn't want to stay in a dorm room but wanted a cheap private room and thus was perfect & the price was the best in all of Wellington! Was very clean, bed was SO comfortable and it was a two minute walk from it all happening on busy Courtney a Place but hotel was in a quiet location. Would recommend for quick overnight stay/in need of a private bed

Review 92:It was very noisy on the street outside bedroom until 1am with patrons leaving the bar. No noise from inside the hotel tho. No hairdryer.

Review 93:Location, character of the hotel, staff, room and bed.

Review 94:Limited wifi, few tv channels, and no parking (paid parking next door but it was expensive).

Review 95:Convenient location, friendly staff, and great dinner deals (rump steak dinner was fabulous)!

Review 96:Extremely loud. They did have signs a lot of places saying this but I couldn't quite believe how loud the noise from the road and the downstairs bar could be!

Review 97:Free wifi (for a period of time), really nice decor, extremely comfortable beds, good location.

Review 98:A little bit noisy in the morning when all the housekeeping staff is cleaning and you want to sleep after a long trip. Other than that everything was great!

Review 99:I booked my stay at the Cambridge Hotel for a second time and I wasn't disappointed at all. Room was nice and ready for me when I've arrived. Nice TV with all the facilities for affordable price. I will come back for sure.

Review 100:Bed was uncomfortable

Review 101:At check in we we meet by a staff member who went out of her way to help us we were very empressed. Breakfast was great Very clean hotel

Review 102:Paying a deposit to get crockery and cutlery. Never come across this and annoying when cooking. Wifi is the most expensive I've come across. 12 NZD for a day of Internet. Everywhere else is 4 NZD max

Review 103:Showers were very modern and clean.

Review 104:The room was a bit small with a soft big bed. There was not much place to put clothes or other items. The bathroom was old with a broken and badly fixed washing basin, a shower that made a lot wet and a very very noisy extractor. A bit too expensive for what we got, hopefully they will improve their equipment.

Review 105:The location is great and it was not noisy at all, even after all the warnings. The people very nice, helpful and courteous.

Review 106:Close to a busy(ish) road so the traffic can get noisy at night - but the staff at reception gave me earplugs when I checked in so this wasn't a problem.

Review 107:The room was warm with a comfortable bed, and the location was a short walk to all the main Wellington attractions. Pretty basic accommodation but perfect for a short stay.

Review 108:Unfortunately I was unaware that there was a function on and a band playing until I arrived to collect my key. The receptionist told me she had earplugs. I had a full on course the next day and needed a good nights sleep and unfortunately the ear plugs were good enough to reduce the sound of the band playing and I only got to sleep after 3 am. It would have just been good to have been aware of this before booking online. Maybe might be a good idea to include so people can make a decision on whether it would be an issue for them it not. Apart from that I was very happy with my stay.

Review 109:I was really impressive do with the facilities and the place was clean and tidy.

Review 110:Be aware that due to its location early nights may not be ideal!

Review 111:This hotel is good value and well located for short stays to Wellington Central. Museums, restaurants and nightlife close by.

Review 112:Music was a bit loud, but was told to expect this so not too much of an issues, would have liked it to have been a bit quieter in the week as music till 1am on a wednesday night was a but unexpected

Review 113:Wifi was fast and worked well

Review 114:No car parking. The room was cold and the window rattled in the wind. The electric heater was perched high on the wall above the wardrobe. I had to stand on a chair and lean precariously to reach it. Bathroom shower could have been cleaner.

Review 115:Staff were fantastic, very helpful with bags, Internet access and general enquiries. The room was spacious enough for all the luggage.

Review 116:I Loved the friendliness of the staff, they went out of their way to help :) Although the rooms are simple they are clean and the beds are comfortable ... It is value for money ... You only sleep in a hotel rather than live in it ... All is good :)

Review 117:My room was so far from the shared bathroom...I booked a ground floor room but got one on the 2nd floor...The lift was manual double doors...closed between 11 and 7...

Review 118:Close to transport hub and late dining...

Review 119:Room wasn't well ventilated and having the window open didn't feel so secure. A face washer and towel-rail would have been appreciated. Bathroom cleanliness mediocre.

Review 120:Quiet private room. Great value for money for something so close to airport and city centre.

Review 121:Bed was very hard and uncomfortable. Reception staff didnt respond to after hours buzzer so daughter couldnt get back into hotel.

Review 122:Room was cozy and clean.

Review 123:The bed is really very comfortable, the shower room is clean, staff are friendly, great location, and the lift is kind of special, everything seems perfect!

Review 124:window banging all night and air conditioning outside window noisy. Feel bed springs. Black mould on tiles in woman's shower 2nd floor.

Review 125:Location to centre of city, on bus routes. Mostly clean and tidy. Bar/breakfast staff friendly

Review 126:One staff member got a bit stroppy when i requested extra blankets, I felt this was quite rude given the overal temperature difference in Wgtn compared to the north. Not his place to question or judge I would have thought. Other staff were lovely

Review 127:I love the character of the building, I love the funky bars and restaurants the excellent Indian and African restaurants in close proximity.

Review 128:Many rooms face the busy street, and no AC. So, if window open, traffic can be noisy.

Review 129:Convenient, impeccably clean, great staff, comfy bed. Sink in room. Shared shower, but always clean and available. Bar area right under my room, but I never heard anything. Public transport great--even from airport.

Review 130:Room service wasn't great. They didn't tidy up well, plus I had to ask for more toilet paper. The bed cover looked like it hadn't been washed, had some stains on it

Review 131:The centrality of location

Review 132:The sink in my room was cracked and smelly. The luggage room was messy and dirty.

Review 133:The building was lovely and had many original features. The staff were friendly.

Review 134:My only concern was having to put the kettle on the floor as the cord was too short to reach the wall socket otherwise!

Review 135:Centrally located hotel with many Wellington places of interest within walking distance. I found the hotel was quiet and comfortable, and my single room although small was adequate for my purpose. Staff were pleasant and helpful.

Review 136:Dirty and over crowded, dirty bed linen with stains on the sheets. rooms are all crammed in like sardines so very noisy and I did not get any sleep at all! The bed was very uncomfortable. No hair dryer in my room and a dirty coffee mug which I did not drink out of. The rooms are fowl in appearance and feels like an old boarding school room. Bathroom also dirty with stains, needs replacing! One word to sum up - Yuck!

Review 137:checking out!

Review 138:We expected to get the modern-looking bathroom shown in the pictures but we got the older one instead. Maybe we didn't read room description properly?

Review 139:Location around the corner from Courtenay place. Receptionist was very nice. Half hour free wifi.

Review 140:It didn't feel all that clean, but it wasn't bad. This was one of our least favorite hotels we stayed at in New Zealand and paid more than other places, but perhaps that's just a reflection of the prices of hotels in Wellington. Not being able to park nearby was a nuisance.

Review 141:The staff was friendly.

Review 142:It was awesome staying here even tho it was just a 1 night stay. The staff were lovely and not stuck up like other motels. The cleaners were very welcoming and nice people. Really felt comftable as soon as I walked in and then the bedroom was nice as. Not to ladeda it was superb. And the location was perfect and definatEly the price very affordable and worth it. Will definatEly stay again 10/10 . premo stuff guys keep it up
