Reviews for Bagan Thande Hotel - Old Bagan

Review 1:The honks and shouts from the road could be heard even with shut windows and curtains. Only saving grace is that the noise stops around 11pm, but it starts again at 6.30am. Choose a room that is not facing the roads.

Review 2:The rooms are huge, and located beside shopping mall.

Review 3:Return visit and just as we remembered; beautiful grounds, a lovely river-facing room with its own private balcony, friendly and helpful staff... and very close to the temples of Bagan. Lots of wildlife around the hotel - squirrels everywhere, and we had 3 owls in the tree directly opposite our room. Would recommend, and return for a 3rd time ourselves!

Review 4:Food was average and relative to other places we ate, expensive. Local music plays all the time at the restaurant and bar when sometimes just the quiet would be good for reading and talking. Outdoor seating at most rooms lacked cushions.

Review 5:They have a great location especially for sunset. The rooms are comfortable. The garden layout encourages lots of birds and squirrels.

Review 6:Perfect hotel to visit Bagan and the all the pagodas. The room was clean, great breakfast next to the river. The staff is really friendly and helpful. We enjoyed our stay at this hotel. The hotel provides good scooters to visit the area.

Review 7:You don't see the pictures of the lower standard rooms on the booking.com website and those are really disappointing - small, with old kind of wooden panelling on the walls and on the ceiling and thus very dark. The bathroom is just horrible, like in a zero stars hotel - not in a 3*! Very little space and an old, smelly shower curtain!

Review 8:The location is probably the best of that hotel, as it's situated on tne bank of the Irrawaddy river and within the archeological zone, next to many temples. There is a nice pool and restaurant under a huge acacia tree, where breakfast and other meals are served, overlooking the river. Very friendly and helpful staff, who speaks fairly good English.

Review 9:Staffs are very friendly and the view from the hotel is very beautiful. I stayed in a economic room, it was clean and enough facilities. Location is also good, near most of main temples and easy to access.

Review 10:Wifi connection is stronger in the reception area.

Review 11:As our room was away from the river, it was much quieter compared to those facing the river, where motor boats started operating early in the morning cruising along the river. However, we love the wide breakfast range, where there are many items suitable for vegetarians and under the big Acacia tree, in the open facing the Irrawady river. The restaurant also served wonderful dinner for my family at night in the same place. The rooms were clean and came with kettle to boil your own water to make drinks. The rooms do need some refurbishing although we stayed in the lowest range room. Hot water and pressure was good. Frontline and service staff were helpful and friendly. There were also motorbikes and bicycles for rent to roam around Bagan. We enjoyed our stay here and would return if we visit Bagan again.

Review 12:The staff from the restaurant was not well trained, lacking manners, speed and the rest of the skills needed. Breakfast not tasty enough.

Review 13:The beauty of the place, the serenity.

Review 14:It's a bit pricey.

Review 15:I was a bit trepidatious on reading reviews of the cheaper rooms here, having booked just that. But what became clear from the outset is that this place exudes history and, in some aspects, that means it can be a little shabby round the edges. By and large, it makes up for that by being really characterful. The first buildings here were erected for a royal visit in the 1920s, which makes for gorgeous plantings and colonial era design. So, if it matters more to you that you have bland multinational hotel standard plumbing than any of these other things, then maybe you're better off elsewhere. Personally, I loved it: cocktails with a view of the sunset over the river, the garden, the proximity to the Old Bagan temples, the buffet breakfast, a good number of the staff and a beautifully clean but not too chlorinated pool.

Review 16:The price of the rooms....

Review 17:The lower level lake side rooms, the baby owls just fledging the nest, the pool, the garden flowers, the e bikes, the staff, the laundry service, the setting for breakfast, the view from our room, beautiful Old Bagan.

Review 18:Acacia shade, the restaurant situated in this hotel has a fantastic view especially in the morning. (probably at sunset too but we ate too late so it was pretty dark. but there was nice local music playing) Dinner here was delicious too! rental bikes and horses are available just outside the hotel.

Review 19:Desk staff could be a bit snarky.

Review 20:Great riverfront location in Old Bagan. Even the less expensive rooms were excellent. Really good breakfast buffet although they did run out of fruits. Very helpful staff.

Review 21:They had free wifi, but all the time you have to login again.

Review 22:The location is the best I think. You can bike or use an ebike to go around. It is all very close. But not that close that you can walk.

Review 23:Too expensive with room facilities. Less breakfast foods and not delicious, not good service.

Review 24:location and river view restaurant is excellent, but cleanness and facility not compatible with room price (I living in riverfront view upstair. Dinner with puppet show

Review 25:Nothing to dislike but worth noting...The rooms are old so seem a little grubby in places Eg bathroom. On the picture you see rooms on the river, in November the river is almost no where to be seen and there are only about 8 rooms looking out over the river. The other 90% of rooms afford no such view. It's all very pretty though so don't be put off.

Review 26:Nice to have bungalows and grounds to walk about in. Friendly staff will arrange taxis, ebikes etc. Pool area is lovely. Breakfast is lovely good choices, fruit, pancakes, omelettes, pastries... and served down by the river under a big tree. The in house restaurant food is also really good.

Review 27:But the reception staff disappointed us because they told us a lie about the bus we have taken to Inle lake. Then the bus trip was really horrible.

Review 28:The room were very clean and the service staff were very good.

Review 29:the staff has to pay more attentios to the customers specially in the restaurant area

Review 30:the food is really good and the view from the hotel´s restaurant is incredible. the pool is very good too.

Review 31:They insist on running the hotel basically on dollars but we are in Myanmar. Also all prices are converted in1350 which is 150 higher then the rest of Myanmar which ranges from 1200 to 1250. Also if you are a solo traveler under 45 not very many people that age. Many French and other Europeans in their sixties in big groups and everyone keeps to themselves. But very quite environment and perfect for a good rest which is exactly what I needed.

Review 32:The locations is amazing! Beautiful old acacia trees, very nice swimming pool, beautiful river. The facilities are beautiful but inside the rooms it is quite normal for the price value. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful.

Review 33:We booked an economy room and whilst we weren't expecting the Ritz... At 95 dollars a night we didn't expect a front door that didnt shut fully at night and a bathroom that smelt like an over used public urinal. The smell and bathroom definetely detracted from an amazing trip and killed the romance of Bagan.

Review 34:Hotel was situated in lovely grounds near the river. Food was excellent too.

Review 35:Amazing location in old bagan. It's really beautiful of the early morning and the sunset time at the riverside of the hotel. Breakfast is various kinds to choice. staffs there are nice and helpful. We have great vocation time there.

Review 36:There was nothing to dislike, the only unusual thing was that they wanted to clean the rooms in the evening :)

Review 37:Everything about this hotel was amazing; the location, the staff, the breakfast under acacia trees with a view of Irrawaddy river.

Review 38:In the restaurant and bar the local wine is ridiculously overpriced at $33 per bottle when it only costs $9 in the supermarket. I understand the high mark up on imported wine but not on the local wines, which was crazy.

Review 39:Lovely bungalow style accommodation in a great location right by the river.

Review 40:The room was totally unacceptable. The bathroom had not been cleaned properly for some time and the whole room reeked. We complained and they cleaned it right away but it never should have been let in that condition. We upgraded for considerably more to get out of the very cramped and old room.

Review 41:the hotel overall is excellent. Just don't book the low cost rooms. The upgraded bungalow was very nice but we paid a lot more for it. Grounds are wonderful.

Review 42:Lovely grounds, beautiful gardens. We were not there in the peak season so it was very relaxed. Would stay there again. Old Bagan is so much nicer than New Bagan.

Review 43:There was nothing to dislike about this hotel.

Review 44:Great location beside the Irrawaddy river, big clean rooms with excellent amenities, lovely staff who were very helpful and friendly. We left very early at 0500 to catch the boat to Mandalay and would therefore have missed breakfast but the staff provided us with a breakfast box of goodies to take with us - a nice touch.

Review 45:The e-bikes the hotel is letting are not all in great condition and they do not have lights (so not appropriate for use after sunset). The breakfast was ok but nothing special.

Review 46:The location is great for visiting the temples in Bagan. We stayed there two days and the first we simply walked around in the area around the hotel, visiting the many temples around there. The second day we rented an e-bike from the hotel to take us a bit further away. Staff were friendly and allowed us to do a very early check-in without charging extra.

Review 47:Nothing

Review 48:frliendly, cooperative and helpful staff. Location directly in the archeologic area, terrace for breakfast and dinner under old trees at river side.

Review 49:Our room had a mosquito problem. When we arrived and opened the blinds about 20 mosquitos flew out. The front desk came and sprayed the room but we still found a few every day after that.

Review 50:The staff was very friendly. We really liked hanging out at the bar that was on the lawn over looking the river. It was a great place to relax and you could feed the crazy squirrels that were all over the trees.

Review 51:Meals were very expensive - up to 5 times more elsewhere. Still, food was excellent, so we didn't mind paying.

Review 52:Super comfortable and clean. Has a definite resort feel.

Review 53:Not quite enough shade for sitting out having lunch on a hot day.

Review 54:It's so beautiful! Everything clean, great breakfast, stunning views over river and surprisingly cool pool! Great location for going to pagodas. We walked to a few of them!

Review 55:Tried to charge 4% for Visa payment even though on the Booking.com printout it clearly sates it is 3%. Check in women got very defensive/uppity about it- up until then would ahve rated this property even higher but this soured our visit.

Review 56:Beautiful location and grounds,Very comfortable large room with view of the river. Great pool

Review 57:According to room rate I can afford only room in garden view. I love river view may be next trip.

Review 58:1:Akasia Tree Dinning Area 2:Excellent service staffs full of kindly service.

Review 59:Spa ok although a few issues: Would have been better if it was cooler, they also should have asked questions about general health and any injuries before they proceed with a Thai massage and stand on your back with no warning!! Extremely dangerous!!! They didn't seem very happy with providing towels to shower after and the shower was cold only (not so relaxing..) By the pool there should be staff around or the ability to call the restaurant to order food/drinks..) Lunch is excellent but breakfast is too busy for the staff so there aren't enough staff around to clear and prepare tables, food runs out and isn't refilled quickly.

Review 60:Excellent staff and location! Great value for money. 1 of the restaurants appears to be closed but the open one by the river is a beautiful spot. Food from lunch menu is great quality/price, excellent staff and attentive service although breakfast is busy so lacking a little but not enough to really bother us. Standard of breakfast food acceptable for a buffet. Room spotlessly clean and fresh, sweet little bungalows, well maintained grounds, excellent pretty pool area. Very close to the ruins/temples and easy to explore just outside the hotel. Overall very happy with our stay and would stay there again!

Review 61:Only one thing...the pillows are thick and like rocks - resulting in 2 days of terrible neck pain. Two lost days on a 10 day vacation puts a big dent into the trip.

Review 62:Pretty much everything was excellent; the room, the location, the beauty (trees, flowers), the staff. They even have "E-bikes" to zip around the town. They arranged my flights, a taxi, a horse cart too.

Review 63:The added value of the breakfast near the river only counts at high season (sunny weather).

Review 64:The hotel is perfect to explore bagan in an easy way (e-bikes directly available at the hotel). The breakfast was the best we had so far in Asia.

Review 65:room too small and look too cheap. if the same amount of this money, we will choose other hotel for sure. the room that we got from booking.com is not good location. Moreover, the room is not the same as the picture that show before we book

Review 66:location over all is nice

Review 67:Everything was superb. Nothing to dislike.

Review 68:Setting is wonderful, staff so friendly and helpful. Bagan is a most beautiful place, filled with wonderful temples and the lakeside setting compliments it all. Getting around on the mopeds was a great way method of transport.

Review 69:Location is very beatiful and relaxing. Pagoda's area is very close as reastaurant of old bagan. I enjoy mostly the view from restaurant at breakfast.

Review 70:The food at the restaurant was expensive compared with the quality of food served.

Review 71:Very nice and helpful staff (though limited English like anywhere else in Myanmar). Great location and pool area with towels and bar. Amazing sunset from the restaurant. Nice that you can rent bikes and e-bikes at the hotel.

Review 72:Been traveling to many countries. First time caught bedbugs in a hotel room. The cost of food in the hotel restaurant is such a rip off.

Review 73:Great location. Helpful staff. Cannot complain considering the rate of the room.

Review 74:Lunch and dinner were overpriced compared to nearby restaurants. No fitness center.

Review 75:Wonderful staff, excellent breakfast, great location, very good amenities.

Review 76:Staff all very friendly. Stunning location near river. Good breakfast. Easy exploring the surrounding area with e-bike I could rent from hotel. Beautiful garden and swimming pool

Review 77:LOVE this hotel. It's right on the banks of the river, stayed there 13 years ago and loved it then & despite having extended it's still charming.

Review 78:The wifi was occasionally weak in my room.

Review 79:Everything was top notch, the location, the breakfast, the eating area by the riverside, the landscaping . . .

Review 80:The wifi doesn't reach the rooms but that doesn't really matter when you think about where you are.

Review 81:The staff were friendly; the rooms were clean; the pool was cool and had a food service; the evening meal and puppet show were enjoyable and the e-bike rental service was good value for money.

Review 82:Rooms are not great but as not expensive that's fine. Bed was very hard. The breakfast was not very good.

Review 83:Good Location and staff are nice. Its not a bad place to watch the sun go down over the river.

Review 84:Swimming pool was out of action.

Review 85:In the heart of the pagoda's. Great views from the garden. Owls live in the trees in the garden. They are very cute

Review 86:It's not really a negative but because we went in low season we were unable to do a balloon ride at sunrise which would have been the icing on the cake The pool was out of action due to refurb so had to use the pool in the hotel next door

Review 87:Location was excellent for exploring, hotel were very helpful in organising and suggesting places to visit during our stay

Review 88:Turns out every year in June, the pool is closed for renovation. The hotel said it had informed Booking.com ahead but this was not conveyed during the booking process. The hotel did provide the use of the pool next door as substitute but it was not as nice as we knew the hotel pool was. The wifi only worked at reception area.

Review 89:We got the river view room and it was just heavenly. We moved from the lower floor room to the ground level room; and the surrounding trees, plants and very green grass with birds and squirrels dotting the scenery was sublime. We were right next to the cafe where breakfast was served and when it started to drizzle (we went during rainy/low season), we would just nip back to our room terrace to continue enjoying our meal. The staff were all lovely.

Review 90:The heat in the room- had a bath but the bathroom is too hot to use bath Despite aircon windowless Rooms so hot and only given a thick quilt so wake sweating wondering if you have a tropical disease. Room door opens to outside so lizards/mosquitoes in room so need to cover up at night so I ended up wearing trousers/shirt to bed ( A single bed sheet would be fine) Ate only at this hotel=nausea / loose bowel motions chicken with the chewiness of calamari/octopus Meal unedible but made to pay full Western price as cook says its fine. Breakfast outside and on 39 degree day it is 30 degrees by breakfast Milk in jug with no refrigeration so warm, you compete with ants for orange juice yet rice cold.

Review 91:The location Jeans dry inside in 36 hours ( a new record)

Review 92:ok, i dont know where to start to describe this hotel. 1. i booked this hotel because it said it has a nice swimming pool and when we arrived there, it was under construction. and we have to use other hotel pool if we want to swim 2. the room is super basic (yes, i book the economy room) but $65 and we only got a wooden duplex room? seriously? 3. during our padoga sightseeing, our e-bike broke down. we called the reception to pick us up since we were in the middle of nowhere. they said that they will send a new e-bike to our location in 40mins. after waiting almost 2 hours, nothing. we found our way back anyway. but not single phone call ensuring us safe made from Thande. even when we checked out, no question asked. 4. on the evening, i was staying inside the room alone while my partner out for dinner. suddenly i saw something ran from bathroom heading to under the other bed. i assume it was a squirrel or rat. I called and they came to check (to be fair, they came right after i called). they cant find anything under the bed. it might escape. but i know what i saw. so it was very unpleasant experience staying in this hotel

Review 93:The garden with river view is nice

Review 94:I stayed at the Thande during the slow ( and very hot) season. A lot of repairs were being made and the pool was closed!

Review 95:Great staff. Very helpful and friendly!

Review 96:If I had to say anything it'd be that the bathrooms were a little dated, but they do the job and the shower is really powerful.

Review 97:We loved Bagan Thande. It was a perfect hotel in terms of location and facilities. As the weather is so hot and dry there between 12pm-4pm you can just laze around by the pool. The breakfast was also delicious and the staff more than helpful.

Review 98:It was the low season so the pool was out of order whilst under renervation but we were able to use the hotel next doors pool!

Review 99:The views from the restaurant and bar!!

Review 100:Beautiful hotel grounds with a relaxing view of the river, and some interesting wildlife (I liked the owls in the trees). Spacious, comfortable room and very helpful staff.

Review 101:Some of the staff spoke a bit poor english. No other restaurants etc. in the neighbourhood

Review 102:Close to the old temples. Rental service for electric scooters was good. Nice spot for breakfast and dinner, overlooking the mighty Ayeyarwady river. It was great to chill at the swimming pool for the hottest hours of the day. Friendly staff.

Review 103:Have to re-log in to wifi every single hour, please provide a normal wifi connection!

Review 104:Breakfast, staffs, riverside restaurant, environment, atmosphere, puppet show

Review 105:Internet connection is very slow and the rate is quite expensive for the rooms they provide.

Review 106:Location is perfect in the middle of old Bagan and temples.

Review 107:- They need some renovation and better service for the price they charge - There were mosquitoes in our room all over our stay - Bad smell in the bathroom - Massage at the hotel spa was very below average - Hotel beds and pillows are not the most comfortable - Staff is not as friendly as most of the other staff we met in Myanmar

Review 108:We had a fine stay at Bagan Thande Hotel. - It's a nice property, in front of the river with excellent location within Old Bagan - e-bike rentals

Review 109:Only the lady working at restaurant by river side has no smile at all. Even we had almost all our meals at that restaurant. She shown poker face every time when she met us, very different from rest of the staff. This is the only thing I am not so satisfied.

Review 110:Excellent location! Very close to main part of several towers. Environment is clean and enjoyable. Food is tasted. Most staff are friendly with shinning smiles.

Review 111:The room (dirty), the bathroom (dirty and falling apart), the bed, the pillows, the breakfast coupon

Review 112:The location, the view and the hotel's garden and landscape

Review 113:Great location in Bagan beautiful garden, beautiful view on the river Excellent breakfast and restaurant A confortable moment during our backpackers'trip.

Review 114:Front office staff.. Terrible. This hotel deserves better trained and groomed front office staff. Another thing I hated was that you don't tell us that we need to pay 4% additional charge for paying through debit cards ! That's not fair at all !!

Review 115:Sunset views of bar and dining. Great food.

Review 116:The hotel is old and could use a refresher for the cost, but overall I think it was a great place to stay.

Review 117:The staff was so friendly and helpful. They made the stay easy and fun.

Review 118:Rooms were not quiet.

Review 119:Beautiful grounds, some of the rooms seem better placed then others. The location is great, the staff is friendly. It is clean and has a very large breakfast buffet. Seems to be the most for your money for what I noticed.

Review 120:The facilities are well-groomed and spread out over a few acres. It is right next to the river (Ayerwaddy), and in the heart of old Bagan, the archaeological zone. We walked to temples the night we arrived. Food was tasty and local for dinner and breakfast. Our room was very large as was the full bath. We had our own porch complete with bench, and we were steps away from the lobby/office. As we ate our dinner we were entertained by a puppeteer and also by a harpist and singer. It was almost dreamlike.

Review 121:The location is amazing, eating breakfast and looking at the river is just breathtaking. We loved how we could rent an electronic bike and discover Bagan to the fullest. The pool area is great.

Review 122:A little overpriced, especially food and drinks in the restaurant.

Review 123:Wonderful location. Great sunset directly at the river. Close to the monuments in Old Bagan. Good rooms. Friendly staff. Great choice for breakfast. Nice pool. Beautiful garden. We had an awesome stay.

Review 124:Beautiful location, people, entertainment, everything. General manager made himself known, provided local flavour at breakfast, always kind and smiling, perfect. Thank you.

Review 125:Some of the bungalows should be renovated, they have the feeling of 80s from inside

Review 126:One of the most beautiful hotel garden I've ever seen, swimming pool, great location in Old Bagan

Review 127:Most of the senior staff was beyond dismissive and disengaged. The hotel old and outdated in a non charming way. The food a sad affair.

Review 128:Location is superb, restaurant staff very friendly, well kept gardens

Review 129:The treatment of the staff was unprofessional. Bad English and not very helpful. We arrived before checkin time (had asked before if that was possible - no reaction) and even though lots of rooms are free early in the morning, we could not be helped till 2 PM. We had asked up front about locations of the room, preference close to the river, we got the room furthest away from the river. And we had booked about four months ahead of time. No help renting bikes, it was better to go outside the gate of the hotel to get information and rent bikes. When checking out, it had turned out they had already debited my visa card.

Review 130:The breakfast and dinner under the tree next to the river. The service at the swimmingpool. The location in the town. Bagan is wonderful!!!

Review 131:Old fashion rooms but nice. Not to strong the internet on the room.

Review 132:Good breakfast. Nice river view. Nice resort, very quiet and cosy. Squirrel made funny noises on the rooftops. Cool puppet shows and traditional music.

Review 133:Internet service was only reliable in the lobby.

Review 134:Beautiful sunset views from the outdoor restaurant and bar. Bike and scooter rentals on site. Excellent food. Large rooms . Beautiful gardens.

Review 135:Reception staff were abrupt and sometimes rude when I pointed out USD change I got was wrinkled she said no (and then after the money got rejected at the market) Dinner was so so Having to take a taxi to go to restaurants

Review 136:Location next to the river and in old Bagan Beautiful grounds Accomodation had character as it is the oldest hotel in Bagan Ground staff were nice Breakfast was good
