Reviews for Distinction Te Anau Hotel & Villas
Review 1:The hallways to the rooms feel a little dated and washed out.
Review 2:The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The private spa and sauna was a great surprise. The room was clean and bathroom seemed newly updated. free wifi worked well. great location.
Review 3:Rooms are under the standard we are used to. The level of cleaning needs to be improved. Our bathroom had some elements (toilet seat cover in particular) which need to be replaced. Rooms are small, no food/drinks in the fridge are provided.
Review 4:Very helpful staff, nice breakfast. The structure is nice and beautifully located in front of the lake.
Review 5:The 2 bedroom villas were a little cramped for a family of 4. The living area in particular was small and not well designed. eg. the electric kettle could not balance properly on the short bench. The path from the complex to the villas was uneven and a tripping hazard.
Review 6:Our villa bathroom had been renovated and was of a good size and functional. The restaurant food at both breakfast and dinner was superb. All staff were polite, welcoming and helpful. The location and views across the lake were great.
Review 7:Some difficulties with the luggage lift and bathroom was an awkward shape making it quite tight.
Review 8:Staff were great and room was a reasonable size. Facilities and knowledge of staff was very good.
Review 9:Back villas - looked old and not fresh from the outside- plus surroundings of the garden poor. Dinner meal expensive - needed options (maybe at the bar) for family on a budget- we ate elsewhere
Review 10:Hotel staff recommendation on what tours to do. Inside villa nice and private- modern bathroom
Review 11:Position of microwave. Better on the bench. Dangerous as is because had to hold the door up and if hot liquid, potential for injury as needing to use one hand
Review 12:We appreciated very much the room upgrade. I have developed the opinion of late that when you book through booking.com that you're treated differently - that you're given the worst rooms. So to be provided an upgrade to the suite was awesome. We loved using the spa. The villa was excellent. We enjoyed the decor.
Review 13:Beautiful landscape abounds within the resort and around the resort. The sound of gentle wind and shimmering leaves of the mature trees outside our window. Happy birds singing about the fresh air, sunshine, lake and mountains. 2 hour drive to the beautiful Milford Sound. Excellent, friendly and sophisticated customer service! We loved it here and hope to come back some day!
Review 14:Getting charged adult prices for breakfast for our two kids, 9 and 11, because BOOKINGS.COM didn't convey that we had two kids. Even though I informed reception we had two kids with us they didn't follow through to update. We had two bedrooms - did they think that husband and wife would sleep in separate rooms. $23 for our 9-year old for a few pieces of bacon and cereal was a bit much.
Review 15:The rooms were nice
Review 16:In the Villas, there is no where to relax / recline (which is what you want to do on holiday) if it isn't the bed. The couch is a 1.5 seater and the seat is a 1 seater and they are hard edged and right angled. On a hot day, like it was, there was no air con. I appreciate that might not happen often, yet it must happen. Also super disappointed in Xmas dinner. At 8.50pm no one was even seated for the 8.30pm meal at the sister hotel (offered and booked via this hotel), and there was about 100 odd people waiting to be seated, about 6 people deep at the bar and I could only see 1 bar person on the bar. It was a shambles and not how I want to spend my special Xmas on holiday. I expected more.
Review 17:Villas have no sink in the living area. The only sinks are in the bathroom, making it very inconvenient to wash plates and cups. The villas are also very run down. The blinds in the rooms are paper-like quality.
Review 18:Excellent location.
Review 19:The villa was at the back of the complex, absolutely no view, but short walking distance to the lake. Pity the Oamaru stone that the villas are made of wasn't cleaned as it makes them look grubby when they are not.
Review 20:Older hotel beautifully refurbished inside, very pretty and well kept gardens.
Review 21:Only flaw is that the key to the room didn't work for the door facing the lake.
Review 22:Comfortable, clean, close to the lake +town +jetty + i-site, excellent lake view, free wifi + spacious room, great value for money!
Review 23:The integral flowerboxes by the entrances were not tended and the planting as originally intended was lacking. The kitchenette was poor (the least well equipped) compared to the other places visited during our three week tour of NZ.
Review 24:The layout of the villas clustered around open gardens and traffic free within these landscaped courtyards spaces The villas could benefit for some renovation as fundamentally they were well designed and enjoyable
Review 25:only a microwave, not stove or hotplate. Not enough room to make any food. Suggest perhaps putting the microwave on a shelf to clear the bench area.
Review 26:location
Review 27:We didn't like that there was no sink, it was required to drink/clean dishes from the bathroom tap. The pillows had a lot of dribble stains on them.
Review 28:We stayed in a Villa, it was comfortable and tidy. It was toasty warm when we arrived. We liked the modern bathroom.
Review 29:nothing
Review 30:The room facilities, spaciousness, heating, and comfort! The sauna and spa was very relaxing and easy to book for private use. Even the french porter who helped us to bring our luggage to the room was lovely!
Review 31:The restaurant food could have been better. I think my seafood had been frozen and didn't match my expectation.
Review 32:Management kindly credited the booking cost for one of our party who couldn't come due to sudden family illness. We were also given a room upgrade which was fantastic. Restaurant and bar staff were friendly and interested. I'd definitely recommend this property and I'd come back again.
Review 33:Shower tap was faulty and was not fixed even after we reported it.
Review 34:Staff were exceptional (all of them) and location was great. Breakfast was very good and room was great. View was also excellent.
Review 35:The location is great but overall the hotel was very disappointing. It is extremely dated and feels more like an institution. I booked a 2 bedroom villa for four adults online and was dumbfounded to learn on arrival that a fold out bed is an additional $45.00 even though we had no extra adults. Daylight robbery in my opinion. On top of that only a thin blanket was provided on a cold night and it was an uncomfortable sleep. We also found a cockroach in the bathroom. Not good.
Review 36:The location was right across from the lake and the small intimate eating area felt really special especially as it was freezing and the fire was on as it was snowing outside!!
Review 37:Front reception staff member a bit short and sharp, no explanation of facility or area given at all - check in rushed. A bit tired in places - vernadah off room needs a better screening between rooms
Review 38:Location is lovely, restaurant food was nice
Review 39:We stayed in an efficiency and they did not have any type of sink with the refrigerator so when you made coffee or had some cereal there was no where to put dishes(little space) and no where to clean them but in the bathroom. Very inconvenient. Sitting area was not as comfortable as some places.
Review 40:Very clean and beautiful bathroom. Comfortable beds.
Review 41:People smoking outside of their rooms meant the smoke came in through our windows - even at 7am!
Review 42:Great location and staff went out of their way to help us both before and after our tramp when we went back to collect some valuables we'd left in the hotel safe. They were all really great.
Review 43:No Sky in room which I would have thought to be basic for a 4 star hotel. I was looking forward to watching the World Cricket Cup semi final through the evening
Review 44:Lakefront location
Review 45:Hotel outside is a bit dated and in need of some repair, but the lobby/bar area appears well-renovated.
Review 46:It is right near downtown and it is a beautiful location. Right on the lake. I would recommend a ground floor lake view with patio as a better choice because the patios are quite nice.
Review 47:It would be better if the pool was warmer.
Review 48:Free wifi, yey!!!! Staff were very helpful with any questions we had. Good location on the lakefront and close to restaurants and shops.
Review 49:Didn't really look anything like the pictures. Not very good value for money. The beds were not very comfortable.
Review 50:The bathroom was lovely. Very clean rooms with good facilities. Good location.
Review 51:The Lodge had little space to set up a Laptop and convenient power outlets to charge Electronic Equipment - Cameras, Phones, Laptops etc No sink for dishes, no microwave.
Review 52:Excellent location , central to main attractions and facilities -
Review 53:Breakfast only served till 9.30! And it was cleared away soon after. No gym there (but you have use of gym in another hotel)
Review 54:Comfortable beds decent bathroom (shower and bath). Wifi free in rooms. Well insulated rooms - quiet.
Review 55:There was nothing we disliked. All good.
Review 56:Beautiful setting opposite lake. Staff very helpful. Facilities excellent. Spotlessly cleaning and lovely little outdoor swimming pool.
Review 57:The room although a good size was crowded by two queen size beds. Why hotels have to do this I so not know! We had a lovely garden view room which would have been even better with some garden furniture out on the lawn.
Review 58:We arrived about 11.30 and inquires about an early check-in. this request was met courteously and with a little juggling we went straight to our room. this was appreciated as we were able to rest up a little before going on a trip to the glow worm caves.
Review 59:Wi fi was not available in the room I was initially allocated, but I was offered an alternative room which was fine. Could potentially be busy with parties arriving by bus during high season
Review 60:Great location on the lake and 3 minutes walk from the main street. Friendly staff, pleasant rooms and surroundings
Review 61:Paid for a lake view but the trees line the road so not much of a 'view' from our room, not sure if this is from every room though.
Review 62:Clean, comfortable beds. Staff friendly
Review 63:Nothing. !!!
Review 64:The location is fabulous with stunning views of the lake. Our villa was set in the rose gardens, quiet, with excellent amenities. Breakfast was great, with very good selection. Staff were very helpful, and only 2 minute walk to btown. This is our second stay here and I would happily recommend this hotel
Review 65:We chose Distinction as we wanted somewhere luxurious for our wedding anniversary however the Villa we hired was quite dated compared to the pictures and also extremely dark. We had every light on to try and lighten the room up, in the middle of summer. .. There were stains on the bedding and after eating in the restaurant we found a large surcharge on top of our meal which I'm guessing was for Waitangi day however no signs to make you aware of this in the bar or restaurant. The gentleman at reception on check out was quite rude and abrupt also. Would definitely not stay here again or recommend.
Review 66:Very friendly bar and restaurant staff.
Review 67:No air conditioning, so if you needed to cool the room, it had to be an open window, risking the mosquitos from the lake.
Review 68:Easy to find, stunning view over the lake, easy to walk into town, efficient staff, good food.
Review 69:Complex right on lake front, although non of apartments had lake view, but garden view. Apartment nice, although bit disappointed kitchen facilities poor, accept knew just microwave, but had to wash up in bathroom, wine glasses but no bottle opener. The staff were brilliant, got us everything we needed.
Review 70:I dropped my moblie phone in the passage on my way out - we were leaving for Doubtful sound - housekeeping staff found it, got it to management just in time for them to track me and get it back to me before we missed our boat - very grateful for their efforts and honesty as my cash and credit cards were in the phone cover
Review 71:Kitchen facilities were poor - even making a cup of tea was not easy. Kitchen consisted of a kettle, toaster and bar fridge
Review 72:Villa was well appointed with large living area and bedrooms. Easy walk to town.
Review 73:the deco was very dated, it was expensive comparing to other 4/5 stars that we had been staying around in South Island. they should have a policy on the use of laundrette as it was still running into the night so it wasn't that peaceful and quiet.
Review 74:location was centrally located, right next to the lake
Review 75:Decrepit grounds and gardens especially at pool area Boring restaurant food lacking imagination and sophistication and over priced for what it was Smell of BO from cleaning staff, enough to knock your socks off!
Review 76:location by lake
Review 77:No wifi to villa and restaurant food was good and bad. Shower drain blocked and bathroom door couldn't be locked.
Review 78:Location to town centre and access to activities ideal.
Review 79:There was no AC in the room. During these warm days, the rooms did not cool off until very late in the day (almost midnight). Internet was only available in the bar or lounge, which was inconvenient.
Review 80:The staff was very kind to upgrade my wife and I on our honeymoon to one of their villa rooms. Very nice and spacious, but...
Review 81:Not self contained and not able to cook for family in own unit, not a big two bedroom unit. No table and chairs for writing, eating. Not enough chairs couch for 4 adults, only one x two person couch. Heaters did not work, cold in summer evenings. No wifi in unit, this was inconvenient as had to go to main hotel area.
Review 82:Great location in town, close to town centre, lovely dining and bar areas, great location on lake. very friendly and efficient staff.
Review 83:I think that the hotel would need some refreshing.
Review 84:The location of the hotel is excellent. Very central. We had a great view overlooking the lake. Where we stayed in the hotel wifi was available in the room. (room 119) We travelled wih two small children and it worked for us well.
Review 85:The view from our Lake View room was very disappointing as we had a huge tree blocking our view, we booked this room 3 months previous.
Review 86:Short walk to town, comfortable nice place to stay, friendly staff.
Review 87:the interior of the hotel is a bit "old", so it gives a lukewarm first impression. The staff and experience make up for that at once
Review 88:location, ugarde, whirpool, Hamish, balcony, comfort of bed, yummy breakfast, nice dinner
Review 89:We had no complaints but overheard others who had booked in for the NewYears Eve dinner and felt the service was lacking & their roomnoisy. The restaurant was booked out so we didn't have a meal there. The hotel is within the higher price range but the location &proximity to the lake & town make up for that. Our movie channelwasn't working & they were unable to get it fixed but this wasperhaps due to the time period being over the holiday period.
Review 90:We loved the room overlooking the lake with its balcony , the locationis close to everything - if it wasn't raining you wouldn't haveneeded to drive the car into the shopping centre. Free Wifi &newspaper, laundry , nice bar area. The room was a standard hotel roomwith a shower over the bath , two double beds & usual amenities.Staff very nice & friendly. Great parking area which is free. Thereis a wide range of breakfast options to suit travellers budgets. Thefirework display was right overhead and very enjoyable on New Years Eve.I'd stay here again.
Review 91:No wifi from rooms, not priced competitively relative to Milford Sound Lodge we stayed at the next night which offered much more modern comfort at the same price, and better food for 50% less.
Review 92:Location, by the lake, although family rooms have a view on a poorly maintained garden, not on the lake. Spacious family rooms inside but outside is dated.
Review 93:When I booked online, I noted that my friend was disabled and would need a lift if room on 1st floor. When we arrived we had been booked on first floor. No lift.It was disappointing that the special needs had not been met on arrival. However once pointed out after we arrived it was sorted and we were given a ground floor room.
Review 94:The beds were great, both my friend and I slept so well. Fantastic outlook from the room.
Review 95:The only complaint is the blinds in the villa are very thin so very bright in the morning, however most who stay here will be up early to experience the area. There's no sink other than shallow bathroom sink to wash dishes etc. Wifi not available in villas, only in main hotel building near the bar and reception areas. However it is free with vouchers provided by reception. Quite funny to see all the older travellers with their phones and tablets out....
Review 96:We stayed in a villa and were upgraded to a two bedroom villa, it was amazing. Comfortable, has small fridge and microwave and kettle with cutlery and utensils. Bedroom fantastic, lounge room great. but most of all, the staff on reception and in the bar / restaurant were amazing, really made the stay more enjoyable. We booked private use of spa which was great, and free. Location is great, right near glow worm and tour group and pub next door. close walk to town. Restaurant food fantastic but a little pricey, but we didn't mind. Full laundry facilities, it costs $2nz each to use washing machine and dryer. Pricier accommodation but worth it for us....spoilt ourselves a little.
Review 97:Appearance of villas was off-putting, but once inside they were fine. Wifi only in public areas.
Review 98:The location with stunning lake views and easy access to the town centre. Villas were comfortable. Garden pretty.
Review 99:The decor is dated. They still use actual keys that you have to jiggle to open the door. The breakfast buffet was disgusting and tasteless and overpriced. It's a very noisy hotel.
Review 100:The location is the best thing about the place. It's right on the lake and next to the tour operators.
Review 101:I've booked 3 nights at this hotel about 3 weeks ago from booking.com. I can't have good sleep every night, because the noise from machines next my room. There are quite a few empty rooms while my staying but they can't give me one without the noise.
Review 102:No complaints at all
Review 103:Everything. There was nothing missing. Checking/ out we're smooth and quick, the room was clean, airy - the windows opened, the bathroom had all the essentials and the bed was super comfortable. Very close to shops and gorgeous views of the lake.
Review 104:No WiFi outside the main complex so couldn't access from the villa.
Review 105:Separate villa unit, lovely gardens, spacious sleeping arrangements & bathroom, laundry nearby
Review 106:It's an oldie but has been modernised. Villas have new bathrooms but the whole area of villas, pool, BBQ could do with water blast & paint job. Need WiFi available thru out not just in bar & foyer.
Review 107:Plenty of villas for families. So close to town and the lake.Staff are brilliant always friendly.
Review 108:Very small bathroom with shower over the bath and a shower curtain, only room for one person in the bathroom at a time. I don't understand why all the rooms have 2 queen sized beds when it would be nice to have the option of a bigger sitting area.
Review 109:Good location easy walk to the main street, nice view of the lake.
Review 110:could do with a bit more lighting in the rooms, very dark even with lights on. In room WiFi would be good.
Review 111:very friendly staff, great location, rooms very clean and comfy.
Review 112:Manish the concierge was fantastic. Very helpful and had great advice from best time to head to Milford Sounds to excellent recommendations of restaurants
Review 113:Nothing
Review 114:The location is in walking distance to everything. Glow worm cruise leaves from across the road. Big comfy beds. We were upgraded from a garden view to lake view which was a treat. Staff friendly and very helpful. We visited in off peak season and had the place to our self. Rooms were lovely and clean.
Review 115:Staff - Amber was a standout .Really helpful ,proactive and a lovely manner
Review 116:Staff were great the food was sooo good. Room was very comfortable and quiet.
Review 117:Room is small for 3 adults
Review 118:Location is good
Review 119:Toiletries were quite cheap, room decor felt quite dated
Review 120:Friendly service, good location opposite the lake
Review 121:The villas have no view.
Review 122:Free unlimited wifi. Private spa and sauna.
Review 123:No parking available at the front of our room. However would stay here again.
Review 124:without kitchen and too small room space
Review 125:beautiful lake-viewed room
Review 126:Nice place close to the lake and town centre
Review 127:Nice view on lake from outdoor terrace. Walking distance to center.
Review 128:Friendly, professional staff
Review 129:Everything!!! Was amazing, very relaxed!!!
Review 130:Friendly staff, great room. Loved the private hot tub. Great location.
Review 131:Staff were very accomodating and friendly - particularly Gina. Close to centre and lake.
Review 132:Heater not working well and balcony light not working
Review 133:Amazing view with convenient store nearby
