Reviews for Kingsgate Hotel Te Anau
Review 1:Showers not so good - not enough pressure or hot water
Review 2:Good economical accommodation. Suited us fine. Convenient. Great breakfasts. Able to park our vehicle while we were on a tramp. Able to keep our car keys and valuables while we were away.
Review 3:Under the bed hadn't been cleaned and the bar closed very early. Disappointing when you've walked all the way back from town for a nightcap at only 9pm
Review 4:Spacious rooms and clean bathrooms.
Review 5:On our arrival the bed was unclean and had long black hairs in the bed and on the pillow. The bed linen was changed but no apology from the manager and the new linen was discoloured.
Review 6:Overlooking the lake
Review 7:Large groups of package tourists. The car spaces are very narrow and the hotel parking lot can get full.
Review 8:The room was large and spacious. Very comfortable.
Review 9:Troublesome door lock. Window room's view 2nd floor was concrete roof. There was centipede crawling near to table.
Review 10:Couple of step to the Lake Te Anau. The breakfast was excellent. Chef did pay attention to quality of the food and the guests.
Review 11:The room we had was near the reception and on the car park side of the hotel. Many of the guests travel by coach and these park outside with their engines running, this disturbed my sleep
Review 12:The hotel is a good stop off. The staff were friendly and only to happy to help. The rooms are clean and tidy and have everything you require.
Review 13:Our room overlooked the kitchen, which was no problem at night as it closed early. However, avoid such rooms if you want a lie in as talking and dish/bottle clattering early for breakfast could disturb!
Review 14:Great location within walking distance of town, with good views (from our room at least, of the lake) and plenty of parking. Reception staff very friendly. Rooms spacious and tidy/clean. Restaurant on site but we ate in town
Review 15:Since it was peak season, parking was a bit of a hassle. If you can't find one on their lot in front of the reception area, they will allow you to park at the street behind the building. (Of course, we just felt more secure parking it where we can easily access it because it was a rental) Also, because it was summer, it does get a bit too hot inside the room - there is no airconditioning nor fans inside, you'll have to request a fan separately if needed.
Review 16:The location was perfect - it's right across Lake Te Anau, and about 10 minute walk into the centre of town. As for the hotel staff, Steven, the receptionist who accommodated was excellent. He arranged our Milford Sound tour and easily answered any of our other queries.
Review 17:The rooms are tiny as are the showers (our plug was also broken). The young man in the restaurant was not very professional and the meal was average. Our son has coeliac disease and was catered for reasonably.
Review 18:The staff at the front desk were excellent and provided me with a map of local points of interest. They were friendly and easy to deal with.
Review 19:It took more than one hour to get our room ready to check in. (We arrived at around 14:00) The facilities are a little bit old and the beds are too soft for me.
Review 20:The location is good, very near lake Te Anau. Wifi is quite good.
Review 21:The restaurant and bar were uninspiring and not surprisingly, rather empty.
Review 22:Lovely location fifty yards from the shore of Lake Te Anau. Helpful staff at reception.
Review 23:The shower mixer needs fixing. The water was either very hot or cold. It also had a line of dirt along the bottom of the shower door. The toilet seat was crooked as well.
Review 24:I liked the location. The staff were pleasant and this time offered to take the bags to the room.
Review 25:Room service strangely disappeared, the page referring to it in the guest welcome booklet in the room disappeared. Odd! Front desk was either an extremely helpful lady or a guy who didn't seem to care much. Thankfully when I checked in I got helpful lady.
Review 26:For what I paid for my room it was excellent, very big, very clean, everything you needed in it, it was almost like an apartment. Plus a lake view.
Review 27:Fridge in room is very noisy No fan in bathroom Beds very hard, not very comfortable
Review 28:Front desk was very helpful Room was clean and very big Good location, 10 min walk to the shops and jetty
Review 29:A little noisy - particularly in morning when people left early for Milford.
Review 30:Walking distance (about 15 mins) along lake front to shops. Comfortable, well presented room.
Review 31:Outdated decor needs some TLC to bring the rooms up to standard. Also air conditioning would be an advantage too.
Review 32:The staff were great really friendly and courteous. Laundry facilities were great too :)
Review 33:none
Review 34:The hotel is located near the information center that we could book several tours in there. The hotel is also very near the lake where we could take a walk around a lake. The provided free wi-fi service was also good to use. The overall facilities were quite new. All staffs were also really kind.
Review 35:Very narrow parking spaces.
Review 36:Not really a "lakeview" property, but our second floor room did have a good view of the lake. Very clean and modern facility was a pleasure to which to return.
Review 37:Parking not always available within hotel grounds, but plenty of street parking!
Review 38:Good location, walking distance to the town centre. Staff were great, rooms were as expected for the price
Review 39:If your room is facing the reception side, you may hear the busses unloading their passengers and fumes from the busses. Need to keep windows closed.
Review 40:Comfortable rooms. Next to lake. Good price
Review 41:The tour group always like to get together in one room and open the door talking so loud. They should consider that there are not only them in the hotel.I want hotel security to tell them to shut up ,both their mouth and the door.
Review 42:A male staff..(very tall and skinny one ) is very nice and friendly .He helped me with the internet problem on my mobile phone with attention.Thank you very much for the helpfulness.
Review 43:a bit old with bedding, can use some upgrade; parking lots a bit narrow/crowded, however plenty parking at lake front as later we found out;
Review 44:right at lake front; the night we stayed, attached restaurant had dinner buffet at NZD17/per person - was great food and price! Hotel staff is friendly and helpful
Review 45:Everything.. Free wifi but only if you sit in front of reception..it drops out the moment you enter in your room.. And internet speed was too slow as well..even though I was sitting in front of reception area.. Staff didn't do much to resolve either..
Review 46:Nothing
Review 47:Rooms should have had views of the lake or mountains around.
Review 48:We were highly impressed and blown away with the customer service of each and every staff of the property. They were friendly, attention to details and accommodating. They made us feel very valued.
Review 49:noisy fridge which I had to disconnect to get some sleep. Staff were very apologetic and reimbursed us cost of one breakfast.
Review 50:Very helpful staff, excellent on site restaurant with quality food. Good location.
Review 51:Shower was mediocre - little hot water and low water pressure. Lots of mega tour buses block parking lot.
Review 52:Awesome location next to Fiordland visitor center. Nice in room heater.
Review 53:We were told by reception buffet at night was the best ever exquisite was the word used. Couldn't believe it,it was in fact a roast. I asked the staff were was the tomato in the salad he said it's been eaten. Said I will go to somewhere else tomorrow wasn't bothered.
Review 54:Nice large clean room.
Review 55:Very noisy from 5am (knocking on neighbour's door on 5 separate occasions).
Review 56:Great location. A really good deal through booking.com although as a 'Genius' member of booking.com, we thought we would get free use of the bikes and a complimentary drink on arrival. Staff didn't offer this.
Review 57:hotel is tired and dated and in need to refurbishment. the room cleaning was very average, cobwebs hanging from ceiling, coffee stain running down the wall, dust and wallpaper peeling….very tired
Review 58:location and staff were excellent and price was ok
Review 59:maybe we were expecting a little more from our room. on arrival the reception area and service was excellent 5 star, the room was comfortable but only about 3 star.
Review 60:staff were very helpful as we arrived early on a very wet day. we were allowed an early check-in (11am) and offered an upgrade and breakfast.
Review 61:because I have a disability the lack of elevator and having to carry my own luggage to my room was a major inconveniance. the room decor was terribly dated and needs to be updated along with the bed spread. very basic room no luxurys and the choice of tv channels was limited at best. restaurant was not open on the premises which I thought was abysmal considering I had no cooking facilities in my room. the bathroom while modern i found the bath to be quite narrow which i didnt like.
Review 62:the onsite parking is a major plus. staff seemed freindly enough
Review 63:food kept in fridge frozen in the next day, could not consume. Fortunately, the hotel had replaced the similar food for us.
Review 64:Location is convenience, near the town center.
Review 65:Rooms could be a little cleaner, a good dusting of the furniture would work well.
Review 66:Very welcoming front office staff, and couldn't do enough for us.
Review 67:nothing I didn't really like got what I expected for my money.
Review 68:Very friendly staff ,my room was up graded. I did not dine in ,handy location ,town 6- 8 minutes walk.
Review 69:Property needs a lift,as we were on an extended break with lots of luggage. Staff did offer to take cases up to upper level.this was only criticism.
Review 70:The Anau lovely spot. Stayed with intention of doing Milford Sound trip, but took helicopter trip to Doubtful Sound. Nice quiet relaxing time.
Review 71:Room tiny for 2 people so felt squashed in. Felt like a basic motel that catered for coaches which it did.
Review 72:Staff very helpful and worked bookings around to give me a ground floor.
Review 73:parking difficult , unckear if you can drive both ways and not much room. would have been nice to have atleast a spa pool especially for such a cool place. no gym either, can put a simple one atleast like other kingsgates.
Review 74:great site and got views from rroom, close to town and facilities.
Review 75:Staff on arrival not very friendly, room not fully cleaned, dirty glass with drink left on shelf in room. Power point did not work for kettle. Restaurant did not have a lot of items on menu as out of season. Bed needs replacing.
Review 76:Staff on check out was pleasant, Chief more than helpful with trying to find something on the menu suitable for allergy.
Review 77:No hot water at night before our early rise to do the Hollyford Track. The very uncomfortable beds in the annex. The lights over the bed which are the only reading lights and shine straight into your eyes.
Review 78:Against all odds we stayed again after the Hollyford Track and had a much more superior room in the main hotel block. They did let us park the car whilst away on the track.
Review 79:There was a noisy guy yapping on his phone during breakfast, and clearing his throat. This was of no fault of the hotel, but the throat clearing totally put me off eating. It could be a cultural thing, but this behaviour is totally disgusting for other guests.
Review 80:Breakfast, room, location
Review 81:Room at ground floor level needs security stays on windows; fridge noisy, buses noisy, inadequate noise-proofing between adjacent units as well as upstairs units, squeaky floorboards above; a "roll-together" bed/mattress; no bath
Review 82:Location
Review 83:Bed was lumpy with bad case of "roll together". Curtains (nets) torn in at least six windows that I could see including my own giving a run-down impression.
Review 84:Location was good - 10 minutes walk to town. Car parking available while we left hotel for 2 nights/3 days on a tramp.
Review 85:Noisy refrigerator, the compressor would cut in and out every few minutes day and night. Unthoughtful coach drivers, tour coaches would park right outside the hotel reception and block the car park off. Guests in cars wanting to make an early start had to wait until the coach party was all aboard and the coach moved before cars could leave. This is not really the hotels fault but coach drop off and pick up point could be arranged away from the reception area.
Review 86:Close to the lake, just a few steps across the road on you are at the lakefront. Easy walking along to the town, bars and restaurants
Review 87:Every morning, there were several tour groups departing from the hotel early in the morning. There were so much noise that we could not sleep more. Also it is not worth to spend more than 20 dollars for the breakfast in the hotel. You can get much better quality of food somewhere else in the town.
Review 88:location is by the lake.
Review 89:Not much: the wall paper was a bit dated and was starting to peel off the wall. A detail compared to the overall good value for money.
Review 90:Confortable bed, fridge in room, friendly staff,...
Review 91:Went down for a buffet breakfast at 9am - am sure the food had been there since it opened it was awful. It was all dry, spaghetti was all clumped together. I Only ate the toast as it was the only edible thing on my plate yet was charged $24 for it. Also brought a $10 internet card for our iPad looked on 2 sites then turned iPad off yet when we turned it back on the whole $10 was used up. Lastly sky tv would have been good as it rained one of the days we were there and very little to do.
Review 92:Staff were very friendly and helpful.
Review 93:We didn't seem to be booked in but fortunately we arrived early and they were able to find us a room with twin beds as originally requested
Review 94:Property is an easy walk to the centre of town
Review 95:The room is very small and noisy. The staff didn't take customers' request seriously. We asked for a quiet room, they gave us a room near to laundry room. It was so noisy in the early morning. The staff played very loud music and used washing machines in the laundry room.
Review 96:It's clean.
Review 97:Not only was the dinner awful, the chef came out to tell me that the curdled tart that looked and tasted terrible was as it should be so must be 'not to my taste'. The fish was frozen, all veggies overcooked and tasteless. We should have taken the hint when the restaurant was empty. Take the five min stroll to other restaurants in town, where we had some lovely breakfasts / dinners for rest of our stay. Of everywhere we stayed in NZ over our trip, this was the most uncomfortable bed by far.
Review 98:Great location with views of the lake, Easy access to shops / restaurants
Review 99:You could hear every noise through the walls, from a simple conversation to banging in the bathrooms. It was the furthest hotel out of the town and took about 20 minutes to walk in. No breakfast offered and bar didn't open most nights for drinks.
Review 100:No free wifi.
Review 101:Located by the lake side, the hotel offers very clean and comfortable accommodation which is exactly what I need after 3 days hiking. I also found it a very popular hotel for tourist group after checked in. So I assume the hotel got reputations.
Review 102:No bad experience but the hotel is some distance from the town centre where the restaurants are, so expect a 15 minute walk along the lake, no bad thing when the scenery is spectacular.
Review 103:The helpful, friendly staff, the clean comfortable room and the good value buffet dinner in the restaurant.
Review 104:There was an old, half-empty water bottle in our fridge when we first arrived. Free Wifi is only available in the lobby 30 minutes per day.
Review 105:Especially the staff went above and beyond and was very welcoming. Thanks especially to receptionist Lars who made our stay even better. The room was large, comfortable and clean. The location is right next to the lake.
Review 106:It is 15 mins walk to Te Anau town centre. If you don't have a car, you cannot do much shopping :)
Review 107:Very good facilities. Very clean room. Very cosy bed. Simply beyond my expectation!
Review 108:Parking was poor; drive-in poorly located. No free Wi-Fi. I went to Subway because breakfast was quite expensive
Review 109:Better price than other hotels. Competent staff, room was fine.
Review 110:Rooms are facing a long drive and thus get noisy (buses) especially early in the mornings. No lake views.
Review 111:Staff very professional and very helpful. Small fridge in room. Free internet offered but only half hour.
Review 112:Nothing at all to complain about
Review 113:Ample parking space. Pleasant and efficient staff. Very good breakfasts.Have stayed here before and would certainly do so again
Review 114:Only positives at the Kingsgate Te Anau.
Review 115:Enjoyed the lakefront location and the hotel's proximity to town. Able to store bicycle away in a secure room overnight. Friendly staff, very helpful, and willing to go the extra mile.
Review 116:Electric blanket on bed Small car parking spaces and cars that double parked not being asked to rear by staff Room service not always leaving sufficient towels Would have liked room vacuumed during 4 day stay
Review 117:It cost me $6 do do one single load of washing an was going to be another $4 to dry it. There is also no FREE WiFi in the hotel and to use their WiFi is quite expensive
Review 118:The accommodation was clean and affordable. It was a 20min walk along the lake front up to the town centre.
Review 119:Free Wi/Fi is only free for 1 hour per day, and limited to 50 MB. It's the case in many NZ hotels, but it's a shame. In the US, in the UK, in France, free is free!
Review 120:The rooms are very large
Review 121:No facilities in the kitchen, no free internet, no free washing machine, rooms are a bit dated
Review 122:Location, a few meters to the lake and a few minutes to the city. Awesome shower.
Review 123:There was no lift and reception was very busy so we had to carry our luggage upstairs ourselves (we are an older couple) We were disappointed that there was no free wifi. For this reason I wouldn't stay there again. These days wifi is important, and it's surprising that some establishments still don't offer it free.
Review 124:Location is great, with a nice easy walk along the lake to town. Room was large clean, and comfortable. The hotel even provided green tea in the room - so rare!
Review 125:Rooms need updating - very tired and not as comfortable as we would have liked. Our room was also very noisy from being next to the laundry room and facing on to the driveway, which tour buses drove down quite early in the morning! Breakfast as very expensive.
Review 126:No room service. Stayed 2 nights and had to ask for towels etc. Other guests similar. Reception staff poor. Bar/restaurant staff very poor. Nothing for children. This is a mid-rate Motel posing as an Hotel. We were disapointed.
Review 127:at the peak season the off street parking easily full and visitors have to park on the road side
Review 128:close to the city centre - approx. 1km at Te Anau Lake front clean and comfy room quiet area
Review 129:Breakfast restaurant was over crowded with a big group.
Review 130:Nice location facing the Lake Te Anau. Walking distance to NP Visitter Centre, piar to the cave & city centre. Free parking space.
Review 131:Given the room price, 30 minutes use of wifi is definitely not enough.
Review 132:This was rather expensive place to stay but perhaps this was to expect in this town in the high season. Nothing to complain about the room or service. Lovely location, with the moutain view across the lake from the room.
Review 133:Beds were really soft, uncomfortable to sleep in, my girlfriend and I kept sinking to the middle of the bed. Bad for our sleep and our backs.
Review 134:Great location, nice short walk along the lake to town. Really soft beds were uncomfortable. Place was clean and new and everything worked.
Review 135:We planned to go to Milford Sound early morning - 0530am - therefore we'd need the breakfast to be served before schedule. The Staff provided complete set of breakfast for 5 rooms exactly at 0515am. We're really pleased with Staff excellent job.
Review 136:Cleanliness, we found a trash paper underneath the bed at our room. The beds are portable type with rollers.
Review 137:Friendly and helpful staffs. Decent breakfast.
Review 138:Telephone out of order, and promised "commanding view" of mountains or lake (for superior room booking) in fact of carpark on first night. Absence of lift, or of bell to summon assistance when carrying luggage down stairs
Review 139:Very helpful staff. Permission to leave our car in the hotel carpark while walking the Hollyford.
Review 140:We did not like the fact that you have no available shuttle for guests arriving by bus, especially with no taxis in town. The walking distance to the town centre was too far for guests with even mild mobility issues. The stay was o.k but would not stay here again .
Review 141:Available Wi FiWe
Review 142:Wasn't impressed that the room looked on to a car park. Was expecting to see the lake.
Review 143:Everything was OK and nice. Location was just around the corner from the shopping and eateries.
Review 144:nothing
Review 145:This hotel is not in the city center, thus it is very quiet. Room was clean and comfortable, staff friendly and willing to help. Hotel is very close to the lake and DOC office.
