Reviews for Margrain Vineyard Villas

Review 1:Villa10 had plenty of space and was clean and comfortable. Enjoyed sitting out on the deck looking out over farmland. Loved the complimentary wine tasting.

Review 2:A sink bench and table and chairs would have been very useful.

Review 3:Very peaceful, and private, nice location, great view from unit, no rush to leave in the morning as checkout was at 11am.

Review 4:The shower could do with a cover/curtain.

Review 5:The cabin had a lovely balcony and homely feel to it. Amazing drive through the mountains from Wellington to get to the location.

Review 6:Shower went cold pretty quickly. My partner had a 5-10min shower then I had one next. I was in for 5mins before the water started going cold.

Review 7:Beautiful villa, very spacious and light. Happy to have complimentary breakfast (even though we didnt eat it it was nice to have as an option, same with complimentary wine tasting).

Review 8:Outdoor furniture may need replacing soon. One chair pretty rickety.

Review 9:Nice and comfortable. Great Continental Breakfast everyday! Friendly Housekeeper Staff.

Review 10:muesli wasn't topped up for 2nd day. Just happened to be the one we liked out of 3 offered. Maybe just an oversight. For price paid fresh fruit would have been nice and yoghurt.

Review 11:Spacious. Good deck. Good setting. Bed comfortable. Good location.

Review 12:On the bare land, the water system was going all the time - not a good look coming into summer. Ceilings of the unit could have been painted

Review 13:overlooking the vineyard was great

Review 14:We arrived before 4pm on a Sunday - no staff available. Key and intro letter clearly visible. From about 12 midnight to 1 am a tractor was spraying immediately outside our unit, both noisy and bright with headlights shining in. The continental breakfast was in a cupboard which was not very clean and was poor quality. The cupboard was of hotel room type. The accommodation was otherwise clean. The owners need to decide what the offer here is - it was in fact a hotel room but with no hotel services. There was no check out staff available until 10 am and she arrived at 10.10. We did express our concerns and were given a modest price reduction. To add to the overall poor experience there were no vineyard tours that day either!

Review 15:Lovely setting

Review 16:Bathroom needs an upgrade, there is no ventilation and no shower curtain and so after a shower the whole room steams up making all surfaces wet and the floor very slippery. The lack of shower curtain also means that water goes everywhere.

Review 17:Very handy location to our friends house.

Review 18:The smell from the paddock next door...well you have to expect things like that in the country.

Review 19:Location was peaceful and scenic. A short walk into the lovely victorian township.

Review 20:Not quite as nice as the pictures. Was a lot smaller than the pictures made it look. Bathroom window opened onto someone else's deck and there wasn't much of a balcony view from our unit. The other units probably better though.

Review 21:Excellent location, friendly and helpful staff

Review 22:Could do with a makeover, a little dated and poorly maintained outside, for the price. Disabled shower with no curtain so water went everywhere. Signage could be better.

Review 23:Very spacious individual units with privacy, overlooking green fields. We awoke to cows outside, very rural ! Sat out on deck as the sun set with a glass of wine. A short drive into Martinborough, closer than we thought.

Review 24:No Wifi in the Villa, which impacted on my ability to work. Villa could do with a bit of an update e.g. old style bedspread, couch...and a bit of maintenance- front door difficult to open and unlock.

Review 25:Lovely peaceful rural setting but still not far from town.

Review 26:The bed & pillows were really uncomfortable, which made for a restless couple of nights unfortunately.

Review 27:We loved being so close to Margrain & neighbouring vineyards, perfect for Toast! The villa was spacious & had a private balcony overlooking the valley which was very relaxing.

Review 28:Bathroom needs vetetlation and heating. A heat pump / aircon in summer would add comfort

Review 29:The view and breakfast and choice of wine available if wanted spacious and comfortable room the deck is a bonus in good weather

Review 30:The outlook onto open fields and cows. It was nice and quiet and warm as the heater was on when I got there. I loved the generous breakfast that was included

Review 31:No direct access to the Internet. I had to go to the office to use my iPad . Also there was only one 2 seater couch for seating.great for a short

Review 32:The location was good and you could park right outside your villa. The office reception person gave us good information when we arrived.

Review 33:Lack of facilities/shelves to put toiletry and make-up bags. Very little room to make up cup coffee and toast. Toaster old & scungy. Shower nowhere to put the soap or shampoo & no curtain making floor slippery. Did have warning notice.

Review 34:The setting beautiful and tranquil. Villas were pleasant and I liked the aesthetics of their architecture. Wines excellent.

Review 35:The room was cold, and had inadequate heating. It seemed like it had not been used for some time and heaters (2 small oil column) had been put on just before our arrival. We found previous guests rotting food (4 weeks expired) on floor under bedcovers - no, not under the bed where could be excused, under the side of the cover. We used the spa bath. All was fine until we turned on the jets and they spat black crud out and turned the bathwater grey with black confetti. Not great. We were advised "water in Martinborough is just like that". Well it wasn't like that before the jets got turned on. Our impression is that the room had not been used for several weeks prior to our booking. This should have been managed so that our booking was not impacted. To top off, we had confusion over the booking (mixed/delayed messages between the booking agent and Margrain) that was put on us to sort out. We were expected to pay and get a refund sorted with the booking agent. My expectation of "Service" is that your booking agent is part of your service and brand. It's your relationship and yours to sort out. Not your customers. We certainly don't feel we were getting $320 per night (for 2) quality or value.

Review 36:The room was spacious

Review 37:Cold, the bed was warm but the room cold and the bathroom could do with a heater and a fan.

Review 38:The environment, reception, that a continental breakfast was included and the 11.00am exit.

Review 39:There was no soap in the bathroom and initially we were offered the hand pump from the reception toilet. When I said that wasn't acceptable we did eventually get a small bar of soap. For the price, it badly needs renovating.

Review 40:Very little.

Review 41:I was so disappointed when I walked into my villa, I almost walked back out. I can understand why reception closes at 4pm. It's so they don't have to deal with complaints about the rooms! Firstly the decor screams 80's. There's no decoration or anything welcoming about it. Grandmas bedspread and sofa. Cheap carpet. The view non existent, it was of an old bush, not a vineyard in sight. No dressing gown, digital clock not working, no information in the room about where to eat in the area or about the area. The heater im the room does nothing as the place is poorly insulated for those cold mornings. I had to pull the bed away from the wall into the middle of the room as I could hear the woman next door talking. All in all, a really poor experience and as a NZer, am embarrassed that this what is being offered as premium accommodation to our overseas visitors. Margrain, get your act together. Take note of these reviews....Go visit Peppers down the road for heavens sake to see what premium is all about.

Review 42:Tiled bathroom floor was cold (even in February), and slippery after showering.

Review 43:Self-contained units were comfortable, and good value for money. Setting was beautiful, looking out over paddocks from your private balcony. Basic breakfast supplies were welcoming to wake-up to.

Review 44:It looks as though the décor hasn't been changed since the 90's. Although the room is very comfortable, given the price, it could do with an update; even it were just the curtains and comforter. A fly screen door would be nice.

Review 45:I loved the private deck nestled amongst the native bush. The room was very comfortable and spacious.

Review 46:When we arrived, it was pretty hot so the room was hot and stuffy. I didn't realize there was no air conditioning. The bathroom was I guess for a handicapped person as there was no shower curtain or anything, it was just open to the bathroom so you didn't want to leave anything on the floor for fear it would get wet. We drove in to town for dinner and unfortunately it was close to 9pm so had a hard time finding something to eat. Once we returned, the temperature started to cool and the room was okay. Only by morning, it was very cold, so had to use the plug in heater I found in the closet. It was billed a B&B and we have really enjoyed our past experiences with B&Bs, so was a bit dissappointed that our breakfast was a do it yourself that was left in our room. There was cereal and some milk, a packaged fruit cup, 4 slices of bread wrapped in plastic wrap with butter and jam. and you could make yourself some coffee. Compared to the breakfasts we had that week at other places, this was pretty poor. The office is only open from 10-4 and we arrived after 4, so our keys were left in an envelope. We needed to leave prior to 10 so we left the keys where we found them. No interaction with staff at all. They said to call in the letter with the Keys but we don't have working phones. We emailed them instead when we got to the next place with WIFI. That was another BIG issue - there was NO WIFI there.

Review 47:We had wanted to stay in Wellington but it was sold out so Martinborough was the closest we could get. It was a cute set up of units set in the middle of a vineyard a few minutes out of town. It was spacious and had a living space (couch and TV) and a backporch with a view of a field.

Review 48:Shower room was lethal when wet. We used the rubber mat but water went everywhere & we had to put down towels to walk on to the toilet. Nowhere to put the soap when having a shower. The cupboard with the fridge & breakfast in had too small a top for the toaster, jug, bowls etc. The reception hours are more restricted than normal & we got no reply when we tried to notify the vineyard (via booking.com) that we wouldn't be there until 5pm. Our booking form only said 'check-in from 14.00' not when it closed - at 4pm. The road was very close to our villa.

Review 49:Nice spacious rooms, very pleasant outlook from deck.

Review 50:The Villa are located between a vineyard and open fields with nice views to the Tararua Mountains across the plains. Villas are about 1.2km from the Martinborough square. The view and location make up for this distance. The chalets are comfortable with a reasonable continental breakfast provided.

Review 51:My only suggestion would be the addition of a sink/kitchenette in the rooms; if you are staying more than one night, it is nice to be able to clean up the dishes without using the bathroom sink.

Review 52:I loved the location of the villas, beautiful views; the cafe is set in a lovely location too, right in the vineyard; good value for money, for the area. The wine tasting is a must!

Review 53:I inadvertently did not realise I had booked this property. My mother had been extremely unwell and I was very busy during the months after I booked this. If I had remmebered I would have definitely cancelled. I am disappointed Margrain did not take this into account when I explained to them (emotionally) what had been happening. I understand they were inconvenienced but I think they could have phoned me on Sat morning after I didn't show up Friday and then they could have let the apt to others as they said they turned people away! EVen taking half what I owed would be been sympathetic....very unhappy and left feeling pretty sad.

Review 54:After hours check in wasnt a problem. It was awesome to have the villas located in the vineyard. Lovely roomy deck perfect for a hot summers evening. The continental breakfast included in the room rate was generous and lovely. Discount vineyard wine was a nice touch.

Review 55:How I wish we had a choice of breakfast instead of what was served as not everyone is fond of cereals and bread alone. I'm aware that they healthy options but still not our cup of tea.

Review 56:Loved the ambience and the serenity of the place. Just hope that a restaurant would be available where the villas are.

Review 57:1. Shower needs a curtain around it to stop water spilling over on to walk area. 2 Bottom catch on ranchslider door was broken so we were unable to open both doors out on to the balcony. A bit of maintenance needed.

Review 58:Lovely quiet spot. Left alone. Handy enough to town centre.y

Review 59:Light is intrusive in the morning, needs some sort of shading for the skylights/ above door window. Also there is a fly problem but there is fly spray handy. We weren't given towels and I only realised while standing dropping wet in the lounge searching for them!

Review 60:The view from the balcony is lovely, love the continental breakfast and the REAL coffee (detest instant). I would stay here again and again.

Review 61:Nothing

Review 62:We arrived at 6.45pm and although reception was closed, an addressed envelope was waiting with our key and instructions. The villa was very nice, a little dated, but very comfortable and clean. Everything for our continental breakfast was already in the villa's fridge and it was very ample. The villa's are very private and it was lovely sitting out on the balcony having breakfast and looking out over the farmland.

Review 63:Nothing all good

Review 64:The setting was lovely, room was very comfortable, breakfast on the desk on a beautiful morning was excellent my partner wanted to stay longer.

Review 65:No sink or washing facilities in room-have to go to bathroom to fetch drinking water and to wash dishes Small writing table facility would be useful Rooms not sound proof

Review 66:Very clean and spacious villa Nice, big bathrooms Good, lookout from the porch Good breakfast spread

Review 67:The studios are tired, and could really do with a more modern look, with a small kitchenette. A new coat of paint, furnishings and carpet. Cobwebs present, and ceiling had water marks. It could really be an amazing accommodation. Too pricey.

Review 68:Location was perfect. Space was good. The outlook was great. Bed was big and comfortable.

Review 69:The shower was open without any glass, made for slippery floors. Also, only a base heater in high ceiling room.

Review 70:The view was amazing! Patio doors looking into the vineyards. Close to other vineyards as well.

Review 71:No kitchen facilities, just a small unit with kettle and toaster, and nowhere to rinse dishes or fill the kettle except the bathroom.

Review 72:The complementary vineyard tour was great. The room was comfortable and the unit had a deck with views over farmland. The location is right amongst the vineyards, so great for walking round and tasting. It is a pleasant 20 minute walk into town for dinner.

Review 73:I would have preferred if they had a kitchenette, however would stay again now knowing they do not.

Review 74:We loved the location as it was in the country yet close to town. The beds were a decent size. Wonderful choice for breakfast

Review 75:Shower drain was not working properly and was blocked resulting in a flood when having showers. When reception was told at checkout they apologised but no offer of compensation

Review 76:Location was great for a function across the road

Review 77:I would have liked a microwave and sink bench to make our own dinner on the first night. You don't always want to race out to a restaurant when you have arrived tired in the rain.

Review 78:The location in the vineyards and the pastoral view out the windows of the villas was idyllic! The design of the villas enhanced this.

Review 79:The kitchen facilities were extremely poor with no table to sit at inside, very little bench space to prepare even a cup of tea. The furnishings were old and tired. Needs a good make-over

Review 80:The view was good and it was quiet and private

Review 81:We stayed for 2 nights and on checking our continental breakfast found that we had 4 pieces of bread to make toast. This was not replenished for the following day. My sisters bread was mouldy.

Review 82:Proximity

Review 83:Shower..water flow was not great and you had to have water full on to wash your hair which got the whole room drenched. Always like a bigger TV.

Review 84:Very comfortable beds and spacious room and deck. Plenty for breakfast but a non- sweet cereal would have been great

Review 85:the bed comforter was filthy.the shower had no enclosure and the bathroom was flooded.the 2 shelves fell when trying to access the food as the shelves were not put in securely. we would not stay there again.

Review 86:The interior was almost grim - dark old wooden furniture. Very dated. Not enough furniture - a small dining table would have been good! TV too small and reception terrible. Mostly, the whole interior was dated which pulled the whole unit down. It had so much going for it - exterior looked really neat and being on the vineyard was so nice.

Review 87:Being on the vineyard was lovely. Spacious room. Good breakfast. Comfy bed.

Review 88:Although it was not a problem we thought it a little odd that reception is not manned from 4pm till 10am next morning. Had to go for drive and come back after 10 to check out. A late frost meant wind machines and helicopters most of the night- goes with the vineyard territory!

Review 89:Beautiful rural outlook. Own jasmine perfumed balcony which a fat quail perched on and enjoyed as well! Felt very private and homely. Nice self serve breakfast.

Review 90:The high ceilings and quirky little "towers" certainly make the place look different, but they don't help in keeping the place warm or clean. There were cobwebs in the tower above our bed, and judging by the number of dead insects in them, they hadn't just appeared recently. Despite the "blurb" about it being "environmentally friendly" the villa didn't seem to have any insulation... we stayed here one cold night in September and had the 2Kw heater on the whole time we were there and it was still barely warm enough - the warm air just seems to disappear up into the high ceiling. At this price I would have hoped the breakfast would have included fresh fruit rather than the canned fruit we got, and the preserves were measly too. Nice view, but a pity we had to go outside on the balcony in the cold to see it - the window faced towards the window of the adjacent villa. Not recommended.

Review 91:Location

Review 92:Only one thing and that was No Internet access. Should have had free wi fi.

Review 93:The villa was clean and very comfortable. It had a great check out at 11am. A great wee continental breakie. A very nice place to stay in a great location.

Review 94:Nothing, this is one of the best places we stay in and always love our trips to Martinborough!

Review 95:We've been to Margrain a few times and always love going back there. The little villas are perfect and well designed to give a balcony with a private view of the mountains in the distance.

Review 96:Help full and friendly staff.

Review 97:Clean spacious

Review 98:Friendly staff, great rooms and facilities and privacy

Review 99:Kitchen bench on the too small size. Shower a bit weird with water splash everywhere.

Review 100:Good location, comfortable clean accommodation. Servicing of the room very good. Ample continental breakfast provided.

Review 101:no blinds in room to cover celling windows

Review 102:Excellent location - near to vineyards and walking distance to township

Review 103:No WiFi in room, windows not all curtained, lamp not working

Review 104:Quiet, amongst the vines & good facilities on the whole

Review 105:So cosy and funky! Suits all of our needs when travelling for a short excursion.

Review 106:no soap holder by shower, not enough hooks in bathroom.

Review 107:location

Review 108:Design and layout, with view and privacy very good

Review 109:Location was perfect, quiet but close to Martinborough

Review 110:The villa was to close to the road.

Review 111:Lovely private deck.

Review 112:Lovely private-feeling villa with great deck and view

Review 113:The bed was not very comfortable

Review 114:All good

Review 115:Roomy villa. Closeness to vineyard and wine trail.

Review 116:It was overpriced for what it was ..

Review 117:Proximity to wineries

Review 118:Beautiful, comfortable villas. I was so pleased with the service we recieved. The staff were friendly and helpful. Would definitely stay again! A+

Review 119:Furnishings and decor were a little worn and tired.

Review 120:Good view from balcony

Review 121:Nothing!

Review 122:Quite basic but sufficient to be comfortable for the purpose of the trip (winery visits, etc). Good value for money.

Review 123:Clean and quiet. The deck was lovely. Recommend a torch if you plan to walk back from town after dinner.

Review 124:The villa had a wonderful private setting and the tour of the vineyard was a neat experience.

Review 125:Why no bread for the breakfast? ? Too basic so should be warned that it had not enough food

Review 126:Location and relaxing view

Review 127:Surroundings were great. Very peaceful and private.

Review 128:Amazing all round!!
