Reviews for Tunamaya Beach & Spa Resort

Review 1:I love the snorkeling area just outside of the villa.all of tunamaya staffs are helpful friendly & politely. I really happy to choose your property unfortunately during to the monsoon season I can't stay longer. But overall I feel satisfied & enjoy my 1 day with you guys. Keep it up!!

Review 2:Pool is overcrowded. Pressure of shower not strong enough

Review 3:The resort is indeed a beautiful place with small details taken care of. E.g. tap at front door to wash away sands, water dispenser distributed along the walk. Many programs around to keep you occupied on this secluded island. Staff are generally friendly and ready to serve upon approached.

Review 4:Beach resort was the worst I have ever seen , it was difficult for us to swimm amid the rocks which is supposed to be removed from the assigned area to pool.

Review 5:The location of the room

Review 6:There's no other choice of restaurant and recreation activities in this resort which leave us with no choice but to adhered to what were available. Price of F&B are too high for local Travellers. As for selection of Food menu are very limited.

Review 7:The comfort and overall concept of the resort. It is a good place if you want to do a retreat or rest from the hectic world.

Review 8:it is interesting & fantastic place to visit where you can make many activities with the relax and romance. the staff were very very good. I spent my best time from my trip in Tioman & tunamaia

Review 9:The dinner buffet was poor, both in variety, quality, and for the price which was 88 ringgit. There were few options aside from the dinner buffet on the one night it was on when we stayed so we were forced to choose it. It was also quite isolated from main centres on the island although this would be good if the purpose of the holiday was a retreat.

Review 10:Loved the look and feel of the resort itself. It was great being able to snorkel and see amazing corals from the beach at the resort and trek in the jungle at the back. Food was generally really good. The included breakfast buffet was amazing in terms of variety and quality. We also enjoyed the free yoga classes in the morning in front of the beach. The rooms (we had a garden view) were immaculate and modern.

Review 11:We could have done with more water bottles. Filling stations were located sporadically around the resort but once you're in your villa going out again is quite a chore.

Review 12:Friendly staff and comfortable villas. Tasty breakfast with a good spread. No WiFi available in the villas which is not entirely a bad thing. Free WiFi available at the reception area and restaurant but downloading and uploading pictures requires some patience. Beautiful setting and the villas facing the sea are the best choice. An enjoyable stay.

Review 13:Limited vegetarian choices and bed bugs, although management stress this issue has been addressed.

Review 14:The staff were amazing!!!!! The beach is so beautiful you will think you are in heaven. Good range of activities including snorkeling and a good walk to the waterfall:)

Review 15:food choices And price .

Review 16:The friendliness and warnth from the staff the minute logistics personel fetch us from jetty to check to the moment we board ferry back at tg genting. They made us felt so welcomed

Review 17:Had a negative impression on first day, when the boat transfer from Kg Genting to Tunamaya was almost an hour late, despite we called up in advance 3 days earlier to inform of our arrival.Or maybe it's just our luck. We purposely made earlier preparations as we were travelling with our baby. However, they were apologetic when we arrived and compensate it the best way they can. So it's an A for effort. We are really a family of beach bums having traveled to various Islands before, so the beach and clear water is always a main factor for us. The only thing lacking is that the beach at Tunamaya was short, rocky and there were alot of big rocks/corals around the fringes of water which made it quite 'unfriendly' for small kids to swim. The waves was really choppy during our stay but was told it's due to monsoon closing in. Maybe it would have been better in April/May months.

Review 18:We liked the staff - from the front desk, the manager (Norliza), to head F&B and waiters/waitresses. They're so helpful to us with young kids and made us feel welcome, that we feel right at home. As this was the only property available during that peak period, we could understand the high charges than what we normally fork out. But we also liked that they gave us options for Island hoppings with the local boatman, at slightly cheaper price. That was one of the highlights of our stay.

Review 19:the food is a bit overprice, the accommodations shall include breakfast lunch and dinner, the food is pricey and not attractive at all,

Review 20:environment, breathtaking view with the mountain behind, facilities including swimming pool, games room, library and movie area

Review 21:Slow WiFi(didn't matter too much on such a nice island), restaurant staff quite overwhelmed when it was full of people.

Review 22:Location, the beach, quiet place, quality of food( although the choice quite limited), staff friendly and helpful.

Review 23:Poor wifi with continuous disconnections only available at the lobby/restaurant. The sea in that part of the island is much rougher than in the west side, also it seemed to be much more windy.

Review 24:The location directly in front of the sea and the forest behind. Food although a la carte is not expensive and quite good. We could see monkeys, different kind of lizards even a stick insect

Review 25:The resort is just great, unfortunately the place is let down immensely by the kitchen. Raw chicken, cold french fries, very strict timetables with an unfriendly set style menu. Also the plates were dirty at breakfast with 3 out of 4 selected having food from previous meals not washed off. I also noted a staff member go into the toilet in the evening (water closet) and use the facility then return to the kitchen without washing their hands.I was in there and noted the activity so followed the staff member out to see where they went.

Review 26:The staff were wonderful, especially the front desk. The most helpful front desk staff I have ever had the pleasure of doing business with. The room was great, a pleasure to stay in and a very high standard for Malaysia.

Review 27:We didn't like the only one restaurant, the excessive cost of it, the excessive cost of any snorkeling or diving activity... We didn't like the slow efficiency of the staff. Felt like you are trapped in the resort...

Review 28:We liked the rooms, very clean and well arranged. We liked the beach, the sea and the swimming pool. We liked the friendliness of the staff.

Review 29:The hotel at first sight was ok. We asked for an extra bed and they gave us a small mattress. After one day my wife was full of pimples. We realized that the bed was full of small fleas. Immediately we asked to change the bed and they did it. When I asked to officially complain (I did not want to pay for a bed full of fleas) they handed to me a customer satisfaction sheet. Thanks Tunamaya

Review 30:Location

Review 31:Room is rubbish then the money you paid for. Restaurant never serve food 15:30 to 19:00 if u are hungry you must wait. Restaurant Staff always care for White people, if you are Asian or Black you will be in less priority.

Review 32:Nothing to like about it, a totally natural quite and calm place which only liked by Couples or lovers, and no Family activity. Even Jetty and Marin Park also very bad in quality then other Malaysian Islands.

Review 33:Not too big a gripe but our family's meals never seemed to come out at the same time which was a pretty basic and easily solved issue. Not enough to spoil the experience though!

Review 34:The location is amazing and the staff were very keen to help. The accommodation is beautiful - especially the beach villas. We are already thinking about going back. It really is a little slice of heaven. The effort to get there (ferry and boat journey is well worth it!) Top tip...get the ferry from Tanjong Gemok rather than Mersing - much smoother service.

Review 35:since there were no where else to go for our meals , we had to eat in and it's expensive for it's spread of buffet

Review 36:The staff is great and felt good with the overall place

Review 37:The only slack here was the beach. With high value stay, I'm expecting to enjoy the beach right in front of my chalet; waddling at the seaside, etc. The beach was not really sandy, quite stony with round stones & you can find prickly broken corals washed up at the shore. To really enjoy the waters, you need to charter boat to go to snorkelling areas quite a distant away.

Review 38:Very good facilities, very friendly staff, great food, area nice & suitable especially for honeymooners.

Review 39:Pool was a bit small. Spa was too expensive.

Review 40:We really liked the service we received. Being a group of 10 vegetarians the staff tried their best to cook special food for us as we could not enjoy the buffet lunches and dinners. Clean comfortable rooms, onsite diving/snorkeling.

Review 41:Everything was overpriced. You have no choice but to pay a high price for a lunchtime and evening buffet (there is no other portion/menu available) and the quality of food was dreadful. The rooms were clean but had a motel feel to them, which isn't what we expected for the price paid (other places we stayed Malaysia were of a much higher standard).

Review 42:The island itself is lovely, but there wasn't much that was good about the hotel.

Review 43:The hotel charges you to leave if you want to see more of the island. Ordering food was confusing, multiple times ordering food off the menu didn't result in the food that came to the table.

Review 44:So many things! Jungle trek, infinite pool, stunning beaches, tons of wildlife, movie night, snorkeling adventures, BINGO the island dog!

Review 45:A little far from the dive sites and dive centre understaffed Restaurant served buffet only, no a la carte available

Review 46:Resort is well-designed, comfortable and attentively run Management attentive and eager to please, willing to be flexible about buffet charges

Review 47:The restaurant... They have buffet for lunch and dinner, mainly Chinese food. The food isn't representative of the hotel category. We had the seafood BBQ. We had to wait more that 45min to be served, and once the food arrived, it was cold. We tired the pizza, it was underdone. The Chinese fondue was garnished with low cost ingredients, such as crab stick...

Review 48:- Location, accommodation, activities, SPA... Our chalet was by the rain forest and we had a lot of fun watching the monkey.

Review 49:Great resort, nothing lacking and excellent service. Good facilities such as pool, entertainment, diving center, rainforest to treek, private beach, and very nice rooms. Great buffet but English can be a challenge for the staff. Please notice that Wifi and mobile coverage is very unstable. Best recommendations.

Review 50:We were not allowed to order food in the late afternoon becuase they were preparing for buffet dinner. Where else can we get food - we are confined to this place!!!! We are not given an option to order a meal, we are forced to take their buffet meals. For the price charged - the spread was not big and up to standard. They should at least have a small convenient store.

Review 51:We were well greated and welcomed by the staff and they were very friendly.

Review 52:Limited choice of restaurant to dine and price is pretty steep... Didn't manage to go to Asah Waterfall, although brochures says took only 20mins, in reality by foot it took a French couple nearly 2 hours to reach the waterfall and 2 hrs back to resort. Even the frontdesk said we have to hire a boat to go to the waterfall and that cost extra money :(

Review 53:The resort is clean and new, super friendly smiling staff, a place just to wind down and relax. Bingo the dog, is super friendly and guided us for the jungle trekking.

Review 54:- unpredictable restaurant service, meals not served as a complete ones e.g. i could wait for the toasts extra 5 mins, while the fried eggs have been provided already

Review 55:- friendliness and support of staff - nice location and amenities - cleanliness - individual approach

Review 56:1) We found 3 worms on the bathroom wall. The staff was reluctant in taking immediate action against that. Also, one towel was not clean. 2) The information given about trekking to a waterfall was confusing. It is not easy to find your way through the trail.

Review 57:The hotel has very nice in quite location but reaching there is not easy. We spent more than 5 hours in the bus from Kuala Lumpur to Mersing and then to wait 3 hrs for the boat to Tioman Island where the Hotel speed boat took us to the hotel in about 30 minutes journey. The hotel is surrounded by Wonderful nature. You can spend your time on the beach, swing and snorkeling.

Review 58:The main complaint would be the lack of a real store/shop where you could buy snacks, drinks, sun bock etc. they have a mini gift shop (open upon request), but it has nothing really in it. You have to basically go to the surrounding villages for supplies via boat. The resort main staff was very "average-fair", but that was a trend I had noticed all across Malaysia. The staff have a tendency to automatically nod and say yes, even when they obviously don't understand a request or question, making things frustrating and confusing. They ran out of bottled water for the guests (if you need water in your room, you have to get it from the main complex), and they recommend bringing water on the snorkelling trips .. So that was annoying. The menu lacks the local seafood options I would expect from a sea dependant resort, the menu is very "westernized". Over all, no show stopping complaints, but enough to make the overall resort rating a "great" instead of it's "amazing" potential.

Review 59:This place is simple and beautiful. The beach is an all-natural style with lots of coral and full of sea life while still containing just enough sandy beach to enjoy a "beach" moment. This means you are at the mercy of the tide, but that's another naturally beautiful element IMO. There is a nice jungle trek that brings you to the top of the hill to overlook the resort and ocean; it was challenging and was a great opportunity to see lots of wildlife (lizards, snakes, birds etc). The resort offers a few excursions (only a few), mainly revolving around snorkelling and diving. The diving shack service was amazing, they are fully certified and the equipment is great. They were very friendly, professional, knowledgable and genuinely cared about you having a good time (they fulfilled my dream of swimming with a shark!!). We did a stop over into one of the villages I wasn't expecting (left my wallet at the reort as we were snorkelling), and one if the tour guides actually loaned me money to enjoy the area (he offered, I didn't ask) ... How great was that!! The room was really nice and clean, new construction and fully air conditioned with a separate ceiling fan over the bed. The resort actually emailed me prior to my visit to ensure I had my travel in order, which I didn't, and sent me all the links and recommendations needed .. They even booked my Ferry and gave me very detailed instructions. If you are looking for an 'adventure' destination with endless excursions, I suggest moving on. If you are looking for a relaxing, untainted, natural destination, this is the place.

Review 60:There was no wifi in the room and very limited food options available

Review 61:Being the only resort on that part of the island the beach was fairly quiet.A very relaxed resort we really enjoyed our stay.

Review 62:the hotel is really expensive, spa extremely expensive, restaurant with practically European prices, not much variety on the menu; suggested for not more than a week (you could get bored after some time, not so many activities/excursions).

Review 63:Staff really friendly and helpful; the best check in i've ever had (music and drinks on arrival), boat transfer included, location is beautiful and very close to the jungle (really nice jungle trek), beach is small but nice, comfortable sunbeds everywhere, sea view room is excellent. perfect for a short and relaxing stay. food is good

Review 64:The beach (in the water) is not the best for swimming as it is a bit shallow and rocky. Younger travelers may want a place with more of a "scene."

Review 65:Restaurant was great. Jungle trek was a real workout! They have their own path and it is more challenging than I though, or maybe I am just out of shape. That is what I was looking for though and thoroughly enjoyed it. Staff are helpful without being obtrusive. I think this is a good place for families.

Review 66:Having to leave

Review 67:Altogether this was the most precious and wonderful experience, from beginning to end. The staff were the kindest and most helpful that I have ever come across before...

Review 68:The resort can only be reached by boat - which on the one hand is fantastic because its quiet but it also means getting to the local villages is difficult and activities book up quickly (boats are max of 12 or 15 people) so book them a day in advance

Review 69:The location resort and beach are beautiful. The water is a lovely shallow turquoise with coral and wildlife. The swimming pool is beautiful too. Forest bungalow we stayed in was modern and well equipped. The spa facilities and service were great too

Review 70:The service was poor (amazing waiting time to have food and drink even if the restaurant is empty) Price is very expensive comparatively to the poor service

Review 71:Location Rooms with direct access to the beach Privacy of the hotel which is only accessible by boat

Review 72:I didn't like the long trip from and back to Singapore. The island is located fairly close to Singapore bur the border crossings, bumpy roads, inefficient ferry ticketing and boarding takes 8-1/2 to 14 hours.

Review 73:Tioman Island is beautiful. There are a few well spaced resorts along the coast and the center of the island is mostly wild on steep mountains. Tunamaya is a very nice resort with it's own safe drinking water facilities and excellent restaurant.

Review 74:We paid RM1180 per rom per night for the "Villa", but the villa is much much smaller than i expected. However, its clean and well maintained. If you travel in big group, you should order snorkelling trip in advance. We have 18 pax, the booking was full, so they chartered another boat from a cheaper resort for us, the snorkelling equipment was so old and dirty and broken, most of them cannot be used, so we have to snorkel without the goggles. And guess what, they didn't even have flippers for us. As most of our kids are snorkelling for the first time, i asked the boatman to show my kids how to use the equipment, he simply ignored me with a smile... We paid rm140 (adult) and rm80 (child) for the snorkelling, we expect better quality (equipment) and services (since other resort charge only rm60 per pax) but it turned out to be quite disappointing, if not for these, the snorkelling was excellent with the beautiful corals and fishes swimming around you..

Review 75:A very nice and beautiful resort, nice view, great place for sun lovers.

Review 76:The transport to the island was very difficult. Food in the restaurant was a bit expensive compared to quality.

Review 77:We really liked the resort seems to have taken a lot of the feedback from previous reviews, so we had a fantastic time. There were free drinks and finger food at the pool in the afternoon - which was amazing. Boat service at reasonable price and staff super helpful.

Review 78:Pick up service from the jetty. We had to wait for more than an hour. Very few options for vegetarians in food. We had to eat the same pizza, sandwitches, pasta for all the meals. They were understaffed for peak capacity leading to delay in service in restaurant.

Review 79:Location, staff, cleanliness, activities such as snorkelling.

Review 80:Very welcoming and helpful staff. Beautiful villas, very clean and well looked after. Fantastic with the coral reef just a few meter out from the beach. Great snorkeling. The dive-center were very good. Competent diving-instructer. Arranged also trips to other islands for snorkeling. Fishing-trips. Very good spa! Nice junglewalks. Peaceful. Lovely restaurant with excellent service. One of the best places we ever visited.

Review 81:Really can't find anything to complain about (which is amazing for a Malaysian resort!) We have stayed at quite a few places since living in KL but Tunamaya definitely rates as the best. I am hoping the management keep up the maintenance and don't let the place fall into disrepair like many other Malaysian "resorts".

Review 82:No choice of resataurant

Review 83:Then staff very friendly and the private beach.

Review 84:Sand fly - No warning sign of sand fly from hotek. No internet n phone service

Review 85:The prestin beach n sea. Food. Hills

Review 86:Beach

Review 87:I love the beach view just outside our room

Review 88:We were given a great room right on the beach.

Review 89:Food overprice

Review 90:Spa, snorkeling and room

Review 91:bed was full of small fleas, poor food selection.

Review 92:room sea-front location, diving.

Review 93:the bedsheet is dirty and the food is terrible.

Review 94:overall the place is nice

Review 95:Everything is extra. isolated from the other parts of the island.

Review 96:underwater activities, I even saw a reef shark in front of the hotel...:)

Review 97:Need to have some activities like jet ski or other outdoor water other than snorkeling.

Review 98:Limited activities

Review 99:Meal,facilities,location

Review 100:Pricey menu

Review 101:The ambience, courteous of staff

Review 102:Dog is bed thing in this resort

Review 103:Wi-fi and internet coverage need more improvement

Review 104:bedding is good and comfortable

Review 105:wifi very poor and diving package rate too expensive

Review 106:scenery and humble staffs

Review 107:Poor untrained service. Disregard for advertised amenities

Review 108:beautiful location

Review 109:Breakfast Price of ala cart food

Review 110:Food (quality and diversity) was not up to standards

Review 111:Location, comfort and staff

Review 112:The bathroom in the restaurant...this needs to be cleaned and deodorized

Review 113:The island The staff, the ambience , the reef, the trek in the hills

Review 114:No mobilephone line Need more activity

Review 115:Location&view

Review 116:The way to travel to Tioman is annoying. Not very accessible

Review 117:Quiet and peaceful

Review 118:Friendly Staff, location, atmosphere, singers

Review 119:Initially wasn't a fan of the sea wall between villa and beach but realise fairly essential to protect said villas from occasional significant battering from the waves. Apperantly this was a rare occurance.. Food, as stated above, was adequate, including for one vegetarian, but we all know Malaysian cuisine isn't world beating.. At breakfast I think hard boiled may mean uncooked with regards to eggs! We came from the UK via visiting friends in Singapore. It would be a whole lot easier if you could fly direct to Tioman (from Sin) but the ferries from Mersing and the legend Mr Jacky the taxi driver worked well.. Overall had a great time and agree with 8/10 rating.

Review 120:Awesome setting below the twin peaks with doorstep access to the in house snorkelling. We paid the extra for the beach villa and recommend this for the sea views and sounds from bed. Very knowledgable, ecologically sound and friendly dive shop. Lovely pool, especially when not too busy! Very friendly and helpful staff with adequate food and refreshments for a weeks stay.

Review 121:The resort should do more fogging because there are plenty of mosquitoes and sand flies around. The Dive charges quite costly for a less than half day trip out to the turtle sanctuary for RM$500.(which was quite a disappointment). There was nothing much to see at the turtle sanctuary. 15 minutes is more than enough.

Review 122:The warm & friendly staffs at Tunamaya left a great impression in my mind. They are very accommodating to me and my two daughters. Nice seaview from the restaurant. Food was good especially the seafood buffet.

Review 123:The pool was very small and not very clean, couldn't go for a swim in the sea because of the rocks and stones, not suitable for walking and relaxing on the beach

Review 124:The room was really nice and clean. The staff are friendly.

Review 125:The ferry timing to and fro is quite bad. It seems the company running the ferry service cannot control the crowd well. They didn't give clear instructions to 1) pay for ferry ticket, 2) fill declaration form & 3) collect boarding pass before queuing for ferry. Then the ferry was an hour late. Same fiasco happened on the return trip. Ferry did not show up until more than 1 hour late. It was full and they had to drive a smaller ferry to bring the rest of passengers back to Mersing. When back at Mersing, we saw the Bluewater 10 ferry idle at the dock. Terrible.

Review 126:Good service and beautiful resort.

Review 127:menu wasn't anything special and you are very isolated. Getting a water taxi is costly and not always available. Too many kids. Pool bar never open, diving company seemed a bit of a rip off...I felt there was just too many little things missing to really enjoy this resort.

Review 128:Villas were beautiful, food not bad. Pool was nice when there weren't any kids.

Review 129:-Should do maintenance for the speed boat, it was quite scary when thestaff need to stop & check the boat at the sea in the half way ofjourney to resort-waste of >RM200++(with service charged) just for the massage.not good trained and professional staff. A Balinese massage should not be considered as using the oily to spread and rub over my body without massage skill. the lady who looked like in-charge still claimed that am i a first timer to massage?! wth..there's no first timer will spent RM200+ for a massage.. DEFINITELY NOT ADVISE TO GO SARANG SPA -dinner BBQ buffet costed RM120+ was really disappoint me. Enjoyed the 2nd night dinner around 8pm after massage, the BBQ seafood was dried and harden, limited choices too. however, only the fish and satay tasted better :) - some of the equipment at the diving center was spoiled. Spent time for me to find for a good snorkelling equip

Review 130:-Fetch by speed boat to the resort -friendly staffs -variety of food forbreakfast, dinner buffet (Msia/western food). Ala carte food is good! But only local food. There was a huge fish provided for dinner buffetwas heavenly taste good! -Room was clean, room service provided -cleanpool -good place for relaxing.

Review 131:Beach area not fantastic. No space for sun-loungers on the narrow strip of rocky sand

Review 132:Cocktail hour - free cocktails early evening. Lovely staff, excellent service. Gorgeous pool.

Review 133:As a Muslim, Bingo was spoiling my holiday. He was so overprotected until i feel unsafe when i was there. Lost key without replacement and the replacement key charges is unreasonable (RM100). It is not the whole set missing, only the small key. When handling with our queries and during settling bills, the man reception was not friendly, not helpful and some kind of snobbish, maybe because we are not tourist from overseas. it is not acceptable.

Review 134:Awesome, clean, relaxing & nice place to stay. Staff are very friendly. Spa was good. Pool with beautiful scenery.

Review 135:There is wifi at the reception, but not in the chalets. You are at a place where no cars can come, so this is not so difficult to accept. I also did not like the pizza. Some of the staff needs to improve on their english language skills. However the hotel and Tioman Island are a must see...

Review 136:The coast in front of your chalet, the rainforest in the back. You escape back to a clean nice room when you enter your chalet. It even needs to be said that domain is super well maintained by the personnel. The food is delicious when available (except the pizza :-) ).
