Reviews for Kingsgate Hotel Greymouth

Review 1:Bland, impersonal, corporate hotel utilised by large tour groups and business travellers and for conferences.

Review 2:Location. Quiet vacinity. View of sunset from balconey ( superior room overlooking river ) a comfortable bed.

Review 3:Affordable, clean, comfortable room. Hotel in central Greymouth, short walk to everything we needed. Friendly staff. We would definitely stay again. Many thanks.

Review 4:Budget rooms are a bit old and tatty but you get what you pay for.

Review 5:Good location, great service in bar and superb food. Barman had worked there for 22 years and treated us perfectly.

Review 6:bed was too hard, balcony connected with another room and was hot so we had doors open and who knows whos in the other room!

Review 7:staff were good, on site parking, clean rooms, good tea/coffee selection.

Review 8:Not a lot. Weather was awful, welcome upon arrival at the Kingsgate not overly friendly and no information offered about breakfast etc. Lots of shops were closed even though it was a Saturday in January and choices of dining out were limited to about 2. Paid for a Monteith's Brewery tour and the guide knew absolutely nothing about anything [it was her second tour]. What a waste of money and disappointment this was. I was born in Greymouth but found the town utterly depressing and the welcome and expertise of those in local businesses woeful. I think the old expression about "the friendly coast" is a myth. A shame because, as I said, it is my place of birth. I can see why tourists use it as a base for the glaciers and don't hang around. And I did have a laugh when the waitress in the restaurant at the Brick House asked if there was anything else we wanted with our meal to which I replied " a knife and fork to eat it with please".

Review 9:Very little. The only positive was the super coffee and breakfast at the DP1 cafe on Mawhera Quay. Staff were very friendly and optimistic! This business should be a yardstick for others in Greymouth.

Review 10:The facilities in the hotel rooms across from reception are quite tired, especially in the bathroom.

Review 11:Our server in the bar went above and beyond to be warm and welcoming, he was a delight.

Review 12:Nothing about the place. Laundry facilities were dominated by two other guests who didnt consider that anyone else might be waiting to use the facilities and therefore (after three hours) I had to go an use the local laundromat to finish my washing.... but that is not the fault of the hotel

Review 13:The morning staff went over and above to be helpful.

Review 14:Old style in lobby and sleeping area, needs renew.

Review 15:Huge room with great view on the canal. New bathroom. The room was clean and correctly maintained. Breakfast was good and we enjoyed dinner in the Hotel.

Review 16:the rooms could do with updating and the bed was quite small

Review 17:most of the building was very well presented and the food was very nice Bathroom was nice

Review 18:The room is smelling like mildew. The bed are awful. My husband & I can't sleep at the big bed together. Everytime we tried to sleep at the big bed together, we keep sliding into the middle of the bed. I think the bed spring are broken. Luckily, there're 2 single bed in the room. But even that seems broken & the bed was so noisy.

Review 19:The location is within walking distance to the shop & Resto

Review 20:Very hospitable and friendly staff. The reception allowed me a late check out at 11.30am because my young friend had booked a 8.00am trail bike. He would obviously need a shower and a change of clothes once he got back to the hotel

Review 21:Car parking a bit far away from the hotel and did not look very safe but no loss or damage to the car

Review 22:Just one night stay and staff were very friendly and helpful

Review 23:Internet did not work in the room, had to go to lobby for Internet access.

Review 24:Good value for money, good access for wheelchair users. Staff was really friendly

Review 25:We ate in the restaurant, the food was excellent but my granddaughter didn't get her meal until well after ours was served. Definitely not good enough. the service was casual although the waitress polite. One room dark and the other overlooked.

Review 26:The shower needed some minor repairs but it still worked perfectly.

Review 27:The room was very spacious and comfortable, and the location is great, right in the middle of central Greymouth. The views are wonderful. I particularly appreciated the range of tea and coffee available in the room.

Review 28:Room was very warm unable to control temperatures - we were unaware fans avail from reception

Review 29:Location and very friendly staff. Nice facilities good dinning/bar

Review 30:No wifi in the rooms that were outside the main building. Bathroom door entrance to the bathroom was so narrow and congested. Free shuttle was not stated or offered in the booking. Had to walk when first checked in only found out when checking out. Noise from the other rooms and from the courtyard.

Review 31:Location and the main lobby and restaurant ambience. Free shuttle to the train station.

Review 32:Perfectly located just off both routes 6 & 7 makes this hotel easy to find. The staff are very polite and friendly and although the hotel's appearance is a little dated it is perfectly clean and and comfortable.

Review 33:I booked a room and when it was time to move into it, we were told the room had been booked online to someone else. So it means the basic procedure of making a booked room unavailable for someone else was not done. It was not that they were busy at the time that a mistake was made. Then when i left the hotel i realised that even the room i had booked was not the room i was given. Then there was the room service. I ordered seafood & was told they had run out of seafood. Then i ordered vegetables and was told there was no vegetables left. So i asked the girl, can u tell me exactly what u do have instead of me asking for things only to be told they had run out. Then i asked for the mussels, she said no problems. The fact that this is seafood that they had said they had run out of is another issue. The walls are very thin & u can hear muffled sounds from next door plus when someone closed their door u can hear the noise clearly So bascially give greymouth a Big MISS. This hotel is supposedly the best place in the town

Review 34:There was not much to like

Review 35:The room was very small no room to move or put luggage bathroom did not have shelf to put anything on Picture did not paint an accurate picture.very average

Review 36:Resturant food was nice staff friendly

Review 37:Restaurant was over priced and all of us had average meal Both rooms need a major overhaul old tired and lacking comfort Bed was lumpy and pillows had hair on them that wasn't ours Over priced for what it was

Review 38:Our bathroom was very small. WiFi was not available in our building. Parking is dependent on availability or else you have to park outside.

Review 39:Staff were very helpful.

Review 40:Our room was located near the main dining area and walkway so it got a little noisy during early evening but it did quieten down after dining hours were over

Review 41:An older establishment which was comfortable and well run by friendly staff. Room service meal was very nice.

Review 42:Booking.com site stated free wi-fi everywhere - incorrect - only available in certain areas. When we pointed this out we where given free wifi but only in lobby. All electrics in our room had been switched off - we had put perishables in fridge and did not realise until 2 hrs later. Big impersonal motel for large bus tour groups.

Review 43:Location

Review 44:The welcome we received was very cool! The accommodation was dated and the room was getting towards shabby. The outlook very disappointing - there wasn't any. I felt as though we'd been put in the worst part of the hotel - the whole experience left me feeling that I didn't want to return.

Review 45:The beds were very uncomfortable. The bathroom had a patch on the wall that needed repairing and the windowsills had paint peeling off. There was no shampoo or conditioner to use.

Review 46:The location close to the centre of town and the river

Review 47:tricky parking, tired interior of the room, guess if you leave the keys, rather than take them back to the front desk, you will not experience .... there is a 2 percent surcharge for credit card bookings

Review 48:central location

Review 49:Our room was accessible by people in next room via an open balcony! That is not good for both privacy and safety. Location is also unfortunate for a nice hotel. It is nowhere near the sea but it advertises sea view rooms? It is in fact in an industrial area?? Our view was overlooking industrial buildings and the sea was a long way in the distance.

Review 50:Room was ok.

Review 51:We were constantly woken up by people talking in the corridors, our room - well the bathroom windows could not even be closed and we got bitten alive by sand flies, mine got infected and it was horrible. Every thing was old musty and horrible

Review 52:The restaurant was fabulous

Review 53:Economy room was quite cold - heater helped in the bedroom but bathroom was icy! Windows wouldn't close. Staff wouldn't store luggage for a day. Wifi wouldn't reach room reliably so had to go and sit in reception

Review 54:Close to Greymouth Railway Station

Review 55:After 4 or 5 stays in the $99 room in the main hotel on business where I was really impressed, I decided to take the upgrade offer for my wife and I - the room was smaller, the beds went from 2 doubles to a single and double. the balcony (a ledge) overlooked the noisy main road, the curtains did not close properly and the trickle (shower) was frustrating. We arrived at 10 to 10 for breakfast and were really made to feel that in 10 minutes we should really have been out. At 10am, all food whisked away, staff non-existent. I appreciate that breakfast is served to 10am, but service with a smile should be 24/7.

Review 56:Room was dusty. Room in big need of renovation. Furniture and decor veryold and warn. Em suite bathroom in poor condition with paint strippingand Lino peeling. We were put in room right next to restaurant, bar, andmain entrance. Walls do not have good sound proofing so could hereeveryone walking past, talking etc

Review 57:I had a terrible experience at kingsgate. First the put me in a room that the hostess already know that the heater wasn't working - it was a very cold day. When we complain about it, she immediately change us. On the new room, also the heater wasn't working. We had to Complain 3 times for someone do something. They "fixed" the heater. In the middle of the night the heater started to fire. When we told this in the morning the hostess did nothing. We could have died and she didn't even care about it.

Review 58:The hotel is very close too the railway - the train is the only good thing of the city.

Review 59:It was not a bad experience - far from it, but I would comment that the bathroom was very tired and dated. Very much in need of renovation. However, the hot water was plentiful and the shower had good pressure.

Review 60:The hotel is in a good location, and the food was very good. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

Review 61:I did not read the confirmation until after I had booked in we were in a building outside of the hotel upstairs in a tiny room with a tiny bed and a bathroom you just about fell into the toilet to shut door and shower over bath which I can't do also we had a loose roof tile that banged all night along with the room beside us which was the water heating room and our view was the car park so very dark

Review 62:The hotel itself and the friendly staff and its location

Review 63:Very noisy with no double glazing. Shower was very sensitive - between very hot and cold. Bathroom door sticks - small job to fix. Room 203

Review 64:Close to the Railway Station and the shops

Review 65:Great location from the station. Nice staff, Comfy room. Good view of the river. The hotel winter deal of a 50 dollars to spend on food and/or drink was a very welcomed added bonus. Hotel is close to the Brewery!

Review 66:There was a broken cupboard door to the fridge. The shower mixer was terrible - so sensitive it was either dangerously hot, or freezing cold

Review 67:The staff were excellent, as was the restaurant

Review 68:Bed was very hard, not comfortable unfortunately. No sink or toaster.

Review 69:The affordability of a good room with ensuite, central to town. Clean and tidy. Good servicing, suited our needs well, with options of the bar, restaurant, breakfast if we needed it.

Review 70:Bed was a little uncomfortable and when we arrived we were put in an outside room where the wifi didn't reach. That room was quite outdated

Review 71:Once we upgraded from an outside room to inside the room was great

Review 72:Had a group booking, but hotel debited my credit card prior to us booking in. As a group we were paying individualy which put the onus on the rest of the group to pay me. Very inconvenient.

Review 73:Liked the location and facilities

Review 74:The room is very old, dirty & dusty. We had to drag our heavy luggages up to level 2 with no lifts. Real life room is diffrrent from pictures shown on booking. Indicated free wifi but only up to 500MB per 24 hours which can be easily maxed out.

Review 75:N.A.

Review 76:The tariff taken from our account was overstated. A month later we were refunded the difference. No authority was given to use our money for a month. From 3.00am we were unable to flush the toilet because the cistern did not fill up. Not good!

Review 77:We were pleasantly surprised to be upgraded to a premium room from the nice woman at the front desk. She could not have been more helpful.

Review 78:Nothing we didnt like. Chose Whitebait fritters as never tasted them. Decided wont have them again but not hotels fault.

Review 79:Everything. A great show of friendliness. Warm and comfortable. Lovely restaurant.

Review 80:We returned from a walk about 4pmish and asked for a trim latte but no cafe open at the hotel. We were told by the not so helpful girl at the desk that it would have to be a "take away" one. When it came quite some time later it was in a take away cup, tasted disgusting and I would hazard a guess that it was filter coffee with a bit of frothed milk.It was watery and tasted burnt. We were not impressed with this service which boasts 24 hour room service!

Review 81:A lovely view of the river and sea from our 5th floor room along with watching a gorgeous sunset,The room was very comfortable and the bed extra comfy! We loved the fact there was no traffic sound at night /in the morning.

Review 82:Room very old needs updating. Electric blanket not working, patio door & bathroom window could not close these properly.

Review 83:Staff at reception and bar very welcoming.

Review 84:Perhaps The receptionist could have been more helpful offering suggestions on what to do in Greymouth while awaiting departure of trains

Review 85:Comfortable and clean

Review 86:The bathroom was pretty old, with an ineffective shower, but everything was clean.

Review 87:The evening meal was very cheap and delicious. The kid's meal was only $5.50.

Review 88:We had a nice room, with a double bed and a single one (I was travelling with my dad). We chose to have dinner and breakfast at the restaurant and were pretty happy about it, as prices are not too expensive (maybe a bit for the breakfast, but it was very good).

Review 89:We didn't book beforehand and directly went to the reception to ask about price. Was told NZ$189. We then used booking.com App to book for NZ$99. Then went back to reception to check in. The lady there was consipucuously unhappy. Kept us waiting for half an hour and told us no double-bed room, only twin-bed room.

Review 90:The breakfast was way to expensive compared to the evening meal. The bacon was very hard and dry, been kept heated to long. The evening meal was okay but the chips being served with the meal were not propoerly cooked and were cold.

Review 91:The friendlyness of the staff. Overall experience.....we enjoyed our stay at kingsgate.

Review 92:Found the front counter staff not very friendly or welcoming. Feel the restaurant staff are a real asset to the business.

Review 93:The restaurant staff were superb-so helpful and polite. They really sold the Kingsgate to us. Made eating a real pleasure.

Review 94:The door in front of fridge was falling off. No extractor in bathroom. Couldn't shut bathroom window. filthy under the bed including someone's old sock. Run down.

Review 95:Location. Tea fine. Bed comfy.

Review 96:Wi-fi didn't work very well in the room. Staff on the front desk were not overly helpful and gave the wrong directions.

Review 97:Clean and tidy bathroom. Close to shops and places to eat.

Review 98:The receptionist was lovely, pleasant and friendly, changed our booking to a room with a view. The accommodation was spacious clean and comfortable. Dinner was excellent and the service in the dining room was prompt and friendly. Day of departure they were happy to store our luggage till we were due to depart on the Alpine Express and even drove us back to the train at no charge. Even though it was within comfortable walking distance. Great service Kingsgate, thank you.

Review 99:Not very clean, still had towel in room with fresh blood stains.had a leaking tap dripping from drainpipe all night , informed staff late afternoon . Plants out side need some tlc

Review 100:Handy

Review 101:Very comfortable stay at the Kingsgate, located right in town, awesome. We had dinner in the restaurant in house which was really enjoyable and affordably priced. Overall a really nice stopover and reasonably priced. Will be happy to stay again :)

Review 102:The wifi is rubbish & only in the lobby. Expensive breakfast.

Review 103:Easy access, nice out door bar area. Good overnight stay. Good pub in walking distance that did great meals

Review 104:We were initially given very "sub-standard" accommodation. Kitchen was a "ZERO"! We had this room removed from our booking and paid less for the one room which we found very acceptable with a newly modernized bathroom.

Review 105:Great restaurant & bar services. Great breakfast and dinners.

Review 106:The carpark was full (and the overflow carpark) so we couldn't park at the hotel, despite this being a factor of booking this hotel and it was pouring with rain so had to carry our bags a long way soaking wet! The room service was quick and cheap but the food was poor (you get what you pay for I guess!) The bathroom was REALLY dirty.

Review 107:Comfortable room and friendly staff. Good location in Greymouth

Review 108:Small bathroom area, noise from adjacent rooms and outside (local residents, kids playing football and band rehearsing at night). Hotel in its heyday has been top quality, but like many such hotels is in need of quality update given the room rates.

Review 109:Location, city views and sunsets

Review 110:Having had a long drive we were looking forward to a nice quiet and restful stay before getting the TranzAlpine, however, several coach loads of tourists arrived and they filled the restaurantand wereparticularly noisy. Fortunately wewere able to eat in thebar away fromthe noise. We thought this was the end off it but the coaches must havehadan early start, our room wasnext tothe dining area and the intervening doors were wedged open, so wewere awoken by the clatter of knives and forks and the chatter of the tourist,it was so bad I had to complain, to ensure the doors stayed closed. This reduced the noise level so that we could go back to sleep. If this is a regular occurance, I would suggest putting guests who are not on the coach trips away fromthe dining area.

Review 111:The hotel was fine, bar staff very pleasant. Enjoyed that fact that Greymouth was a bit different to the many scenic tourist spots. Good location for the TranzAlpine.

Review 112:Duty Manager, Brian Hubbard, and the receptionist on duty with, we're not friendly and ignorant - the ?Manager actually walked away from me, when he knew full well I needed to speak to him. Receptionist on duty on our departure very surly and not helpful.

Review 113:Restaurant food and staff very good. Receptionist on arrival friendly and efficient

Review 114:Facilities were minimal.Shower over bath which either scalded or froze, We were in an old room, okay it was cheap but we felt it should never have been let.

Review 115:The location. Staff were helpful enough

Review 116:Out dated not worth the money, first room stunk of smoke and had three hairs in our bed and stained sheets,we got moved, stuffy room with no windows, broken shower and dirty marks all over bathroom door, not worth the money at all, won't go back

Review 117:The gym was a joke, non working equipment crammed into an old room. Some more free weights and some gym mats would be useful.

Review 118:We stayed in the motel part of the hotel and the room was sufficient for our stay. The room was clean.

Review 119:Old ear buds from past guests under the bed, as well as rubbish. Guess they don't check under here! black long hairs in the bathroom that weren't ours. The rooms outside are very outdated with old bedspreads. Rooms Inside for same price are much much better! Plus very small and hard to navigate with a single bed in the way of the toilet. No free wifi!

Review 120:The location was good so was having a bath in the room.

Review 121:The bathroom could have been cleaned better, there was hair on the first towel I picked up and on the floor. The shower water temperature was all over the place, it took forever to heat up initially and then during my shower it went from almost stone cold to so hot I couldn't stand under it and back without adjusting the mixer.

Review 122:The Staff were friendly and helpful. The restaurant provided a better than average meal.

Review 123:Unfortunately the clouds rolled in overnight and we weren't able to take our chartered flight out or helicopter ride to the glacier. We waited out the rain reading at the Greymouth Library and took the train back to Christchurch. The storm had caused some damage along the way back and the ride took a lot longer. Not quite so novel the second time around.

Review 124:We rode the Tranzalpine in from Christchurch to cave tube in Greymouth. The scenery along the route was great and the excursion was a lot of fun.

Review 125:The room was totally cramped with worn-out furniture, bed like a hammock, bathroom some damage, toilet base moved, definitely use the rubber mat for showering - dangerously slippery. Didn't get much sleep because kitchen noise below until after midnight and early morning a whole stack of bottles fell over and somebody dragged these along for about an hour.

Review 126:Thank you for letting us check in early and looking after our luggage! The receptionist, Rebecca was very friendly and helpful.

Review 127:Although the rooms are non-smoking, the balconies are not. Adjacent rooms effectively share the same balcony, which means the only way to avoid cigarette stench is to close the balcony door and the window. This results in a very hot room.

Review 128:Staff was extremely helpful and friendly. We could not ask for more.

Review 129:We had a junior suite so were paying for a large area for 4 nights. The check out staff person kept on about how much we were paying - said that in her opinion if we made our own bed & did our own dishes we shouldn't have to pay anything! Bizarre! Made me feel uncomfortable that we had booked a more expensive room when it wasn't really her business!

Review 130:Household staff were helpful, efficient and friendly

Review 131:The hotel is generally very run down - tired and ready to go. The layout of the hotel is dated and no-longer appropriate. The restaurant is grim, the breakfast awful. Finally please do not add insult to injury by changing a fee for credit card payments- effectively a tax - Dorenda Sweeney

Review 132:Convenient location for what I had to do

Review 133:Was mislead on website -did not have a view OR balcony.Shower was terrible, was mould in bathroom along with previous occupiers hair in bath & on floor!

Review 134:The Meal was fantastic & friendly staff.

Review 135:Small over-furnished room, very old bathroom, bad insulation against noise from adjoining rooms, dingy, couldn't stand to be in the room for any length of time.
