Reviews for Heritance Tea Factory
Review 1:We booked full board and the food was disappointing. The curries were sitting luke warm in bain-maries and did not have much flavour. We also found the staff very inattentive at dinner. Furthermore, the Hotel charged us the full amount due on my credit card 4 days before we arrived and then tried to charge me more once we were there for some reason that the staff could not explain. It's a cool concept, but it's ridiculously pricey for what it is. I would not return.
Review 2:Waking up on a tea plantation was an amazing experience. We woke up early to go for a walk in the mist and enjoy the views and loved this aspect of the hotel. We did one night to splash out in the middle of our trip, but otherwise stayed in homestays. Homestays offer a more authentic experience, better food and better value for money. It's probably not worth the money if you usually travel on a budget, like us.
Review 3:Could be lot more enjoyable like a resort and a fun place with more relaxed rules and in house activities and entertainment facilities.
Review 4:The view and location plus the accommodating nature of the General Manager and the FB manager and the staff was very courteous and helpful.
Review 5:The room is very little for a deluxe and absolutely not isolated from noise. Noise from the hallway, noise from your neightbours (you can follow their conversations) and mainly from the very annoying lift sound: every time that lift stops at a floor there is a beep. Don't forget your earplugs...
Review 6:Beautiful building in an impressive location. People are professional and service is good.
Review 7:Rooms were small and didn't feel very luxurious given the price. Also, it all felt fake somehow. I don't know how to explain it. The staff was all dressed up as if playing some part in a colonial drama for example. It was odd. Nice but really odd.
Review 8:Beautiful location, high up in the mountains and surrounded by tea-fields. Truly beautiful.
Review 9:7 hours trip from the airport.... don't go straight there. Visit it after u pass few days in kandy or in other nearby places.
Review 10:Very nice hotel with a fantastic location
Review 11:Guests' movement from the room upstairs can be heard clearly.
Review 12:This hotel, converted from a tea factory, is amazing and unique. The facilities are good and staff are nice.
Review 13:the food was sub standard...huge variety on the buffet but nothing was tasty...appas were burnt, dosas were broken n bad, th sambhar tasted nothing like sambhar, the deserts were also quite sad, the ice cream had crunchy ice in it, the curries were quite bland, the plating was good at lunch, but th salad served with th dish was absolutely not seasoned...so it felt sucha waste
Review 14:loved th factory experience, the location, the green tea gardens around, the nature walk, the tea picking experience
Review 15:absolutely everything! everything was perfect, the food, the rooms, the cleanliness, the view, and the staff (from the doorman to the manager on duty). even the activities were great!
Review 16:Noise from above rooms, outdated furnishings, food quality (good variety but nothing tasted good).
Review 17:View, interior hotel common areas (old renovated factory), and live music (guy has a phenomenal voice!)
Review 18:Nothing to dislike...
Review 19:Everything... Even delivered 'hot water bottles' .,!!! This hotel tends to your needs before you think of them.. First Class...
Review 20:highly recommended for a couple of nights - we stayed for 1. We were greeted with 5 star service and of course tea! The supper buffet and cocktails were very good - unfortunately we had to leave at 6am so missed breakfast but they packed a delicious take away breakfast for us. All the rooms have fantastic views of the tea fields and surrounding hills.
Review 21:Too distant. The condition of road of tea estate zone may make motion sickness.
Review 22:I have to emphasis that their staff is excellent. So warm and considerate. You can easily feel their passion to serve. And still keep comfortable room for you to enjoy the slow, cozy atmosphere of the tea estate area.
Review 23:Sound insulation between floors is not good, as we were kept awake at 4 am by a man pacing & talking loudly on the phone in the room above - my wife even got up to complain & the noise stopped (until 7 am when it started again)!
Review 24:3 km drive through the tea plantation along narrow road felt like we were going to a special place - & it was special. Great views. Amazing building. Barking good 6-course meal (excellent food) in the train carriage & worth the cost. Tea picking. Nice place to have a day off to relax. Good value buffet restaurant.
Review 25:Room was quite small. Was one of the pricier hotels in SL. Don't travel up to it at night as the roads are treacherous
Review 26:Amazing location. Beautiful building. Fantastic staff. Must have dinner in the train carriage. The station master really makes the evening. Tea picking is also well worth it.
Review 27:The last three kilometers of the way to the hotel were not easy - the road is narrow, it could be a problem if you have a car going in opposite direction
Review 28:The atmosphere of the hotel is unique - well done reconstruction of the factory into high level hotel with history. We have spent several hours going around of the hotel in the fields of tea - it was really amazing. The prices of tea proposed by hotel are not very high - we have bought souvenirs for our friends.
Review 29:The staff were amazing they really made you feel welcome and looked after you. The views from the property were beautiful and I really loved how they converted ithe building. We had dinner on the train and it was really good fun.
Review 30:The drive was not pleasant as it was bumpy and far. The place is amazing and the food was excellent. My aunt booked this place and your section on booking online indicated that I may need a letter with her credit card number and ID when checking in ( since she was not with me), but no one asked for it. She went to the trouble of writing and mailing to me . You shohld change the policy or be consistant.
Review 31:Sound-proofing could be improved, but as this is a historic building, I could bear with it.
Review 32:Full of character, great location - located on top of a hill surrounded by tea plantation, friendly staff.
Review 33:Was a bit noisy before 7am with the cleaning staff outside on our floor so it was a bit hard to sleep in. We could hear footsteps, chatter and people walking loudly above us. Food was satisfactory but not amazing like other places we stayed at.
Review 34:Loved the hotel itself and the staff were great. Very unique! Exploring the grounds was fun and very scenic. Facilities were very good and we were very comfortable. No major issues.
Review 35:It's all looking a tad tiered, i.e. common areas (soft furnishings) a little shabby and bathrooms need updating. It's a fabulous place but in need of freshening up.
Review 36:Brilliant Staff & food excellent.
Review 37:Very difficult to get to. A long long winding approach road (not the hotels fault , just because of where it is). The cost of transport to local attractions - you are at the mercy of the hotel.
Review 38:Amazingly helpful and attentive staff. The view from the room. The spa. The history. The tea-picking activity (very cheap at Rs500 each).
Review 39:A must visit hotel, its around 4km away from the city with narrow roads between the tea plantation, yet the scenery from the hotel/ rooms is just perfect, staff are very polite and food is very good at a convenient price. Highly recommended if you just want to relax and enjoy the view.
Review 40:Very thin walls, we could hear the neighbours snoring all night and heavy foot steps from room above!
Review 41:Tea picking was excellent and the celery of the hotel is beautiful!
Review 42:The food was mediocre and at times subpar, especially for the price that is paid. I wouldn't recommend going full board or half board as the foods at the buffet can be quite bland. The towels and bedsheets were also dirty. For the price paid, there felt no difference being on the executive floor so save your money by booking a regular room.
Review 43:The picturesque views from the bedroom with rolling hills of tea plants was amazing. The old charm of the building added to the uniqueness of the place
Review 44:it would be better if there were more kinds of food.
Review 45:the best location, standing in the center of tea plantation. hotel and room were beautiful. the food was delicious. there was no big group so we could have a relaxed time. the price is expensive, but deserves. there is nothing to say, just visit and try! strongly recommend to check in early and check out late.
Review 46:We had a great time at your hotel. The food in the restaurant was very good and the rooms were so clean. The Hotel itself has so much character and it's location is amazing. We really enjoyed our time at your hotel. We would strongly recommend you to a friend!
Review 47:Very cold at night. Thin windows meant the howling winds kept us awake all night. Thin mattresses and single beds despite requesting double bed.
Review 48:Food was very good-great choice & selection.
Review 49:Can't find fault w it because we stayed only for one night . May run out if things to do if stay longer . A bit out of way for access to town
Review 50:Great hotel w interesting history. Service from staff was impeccable
Review 51:I would have loved to try the fin e dining in the beautiful old railway carriage, but at $75 a head, for a family of 5 people it was far too expensive.
Review 52:The hotel was beautiful and in a fantastic location. The staff were helpful and friendly and I loved the look and feel of the hotel. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anybody.
Review 53:Nothing
Review 54:Loved location in hills although a little further from Nuwara Eliya than we thought. Beautifully maintained building with excellent food and spa. Really enjoyed the tea picking and would have liked to stay longer to do some hiking but they were full.
Review 55:It is a nice property no doubt but I think it is fairly over-priced. This said, our stay was certainly worth the money we spent on it.
Review 56:Heritance Tea Factory can certainly boast of being at a very nice location and they have done a fabulous job of refurbishing a tea factory in to a nice hotel. Their staff were really helpful and eager to make our stay enjoyable. The spread at their restaurant for breakfast and dinner included lots of vegetarian options which we liked.
Review 57:The hairdryer in the bathroom was weak and stopped after about 45 seconds. Couldn't dry my hair after my shower.
Review 58:We were delighted to be given a room upgrade and were thrilled by the beautiful views out of our room on the Executive Floor! The ambiance of the entire hotel, the room's comfort and facilities (including a welcoming warm heater - it's cold at altitude!) made our one-night stay blissful. The check-in was smooth and professional. The maitre 'd of the authentic railway carriage restaurant went beyond duty to make out meal fun, enjoyable and just plain "memorable". The mini-tour of the tea-production factory was interesting and the lady who gave us the your was wonderful - knowledgable, friendly and welcoming.
Review 59:The hotel is 15 km from the town and the road in is tortuous, with hairpin bends.
Review 60:The hotel is an architectural gem, incorporating the best aspects of the old factory. I was impressed by the jarrah been work in the bathroom. The bar and restaurant had lovely views and great ambience. I loved the cool fresh air, a respite from the heat of Colombo.
Review 61:No alcohol for New Moon
Review 62:Train (3rd class) from Kandy to Nanu Owa was a great experience Tea tasting and picking wearing traditional costume Dinner entertainment Staff Location
Review 63:Room bathroom needs an upgrade, bath / shower is a compromise and would probably be better with only a shower unit.
Review 64:Staff at this heritance hotel are excellent, they seem to have a passion for their hotel, and nothing is too much trouble. Unlike other hotels they appear to care about their customers. Food was brilliant, hotel public areas are well maintained, and unusual and interesting. This hotel is a bolt hole, especially when the wind and rain starts to blow through.
Review 65:This is the most authentic hotel I've ever stayed in, an old Tea Factory turned into a luxury hotel, where every little detail is very well designer. We loved the welcoming we received a lot and also the checkout small gift, the small things make the difference and you see the higher class of a hotel. We loved the small tea factory nearby and the garden. The hotel's secluded location into the hills covered by tea fields is impressive and gives you a great feeling of peace and relaxation. The staff was very nice, their costumes where also well designed/picked, the rooms had a great view. We simply LOVED this hotel, is like you enter a tea lovers world and you dive into it completely loving every little detail about this hotel.
Review 66:This hotel has an excellent location with great views of tea estates and it is tucked away from the busy streets and shopping! It has history written all over of the tea industry on its location. The staff are dedicated and give excellent service.
Review 67:Nuwan from the restaurant is professional and outstanding in his performance. He has an excellent product knowledge and can answer you question, which asked, by coming direct to the point.
Review 68:There is not a great deal in this area so our two nights was possibly too much. One night would have been sufficient.
Review 69:My partner and I stayed here as we wanted to experience the tea plantations in this beautiful setting. It really was a unique experience and one we thoroughly enjoyed.
Review 70:Internet is a mess: slow and requiring you to sign back in each time your phone screen blanks out. The usual problem with electric outlets: when will hotels start realizing that we all carry 2-3 pieces of equipment with us that require charging on a daily basis - that's 5+ devices needing easy access to multi-format, multi-prong outlets and please do not give us only British plugs and especially please do not hide the single outlet behind a desk. The hotel should also advertise clearly that it's quite a trek up there and that the cab to "town" runs a whopping $15 one way, and another $15 to come back up.
Review 71:Location is unparalleled: way up on the mountain. Old tea factory converted into a hotel which is charming and welcoming, having retained the former open spaces allowed by glass and steel bar construction. Staff are great: all smiles and helpfulness, and many of them come from the villages below, which allows them to escape their tea plucker poverty. Dining options are limited, but prices at the hotel are very reasonable.
Review 72:The atmosphere in the hotel is really good. The hotel combines modernity and tradition, it's superb. All the facilities are great and the staff is charming. I strongly recommend it for 3-4 days
Review 73:Slightly thin floorboards, I could hear the guests above my room walking around.
Review 74:• Staff were friendly and accommodating. It feels as though you have a private staff at your disposal despite the fact that the hotel was fully booked when I checked in.• Check-in was relaxing and quick. No standing around, waiting for someone to process your booking. I was led to a couch overlooking the outdoor viewpoint, served tea and given the traditional Sri Lankan welcome where I had to munch some herbs and sugar crystals (voluntarily, of course). Someone asked for my card, they bring the bill right where you’re sitting, admiring the tea estate views, and your room key is provided on a platter. The service has hints of old-world charm, and the staff were wonderfully & impeccably dressed as well.• Colonial rooms are well appointed, just the right size for a Queen bed, a window-side sitting area, an imposing vanity dresser, a couple of bedside tables and a cabinet with slippers and robe. Comfy bed, firm mattress. Free coffee and tea, with sugar packets and an electric kettle you can use. Bathroom: hairdryer, toiletries all provided for. They have a rainfall shower which was divine, and is always a plus in my books!• The hotel itself is an attraction being a converted tea factory. Around the reception area, they have stories of its history, samples of tea, a cozy bar, a sitting area with views of the tea estate. There’s a tea plant-maze near the organic tea factory and a flower garden path right below it. There’s an old train carriage converted into a dining area at the back where the children’s playground is. The location is fantastic – misty evenings and cool mountain breeze are a daily occurrence. The outdoor veranda has views of the tea estate and vegetable farms where you can while away your afternoon reading a book while sipping one of their organic brews.• I availed of the tea-plucking and tea estate nature walk and was impressed by the guides – all friendly and accommodating.
Review 75:Nothing really when you understand where one is. The management will add a swimming pool soon to the wide range of facilities, I hope they will provide bathing in tea.
Review 76:Second time round at the Tea Factory : the magic is still there ! This place is just out of time and out of space. Come rain come shine, one enjoys every minute here. We have had the chance to have an extra : the highest room in Sri Lanka - an uncalculable view in the valley and further, the Nuwara mist and rain are sent by the gods of tea and they join at the Tea Factory at very special moments, the sun, the other deity, does the rest.
Review 77:The rooms are quite old, they could update the toilet, it was hard to get in the shower (very high, they actually give you a wood step), dinner at the railway carriage too expensive: 70$ per person. Definetely overpriced !
Review 78:Nice staff, staying at a previous tea factory, excursions: walks, tea plucking. Buffet was good
Review 79:Only down side was no A/C in room which for us was a little hot at night. Room was quite pricey for a nights stay, which had it included an evening meal as well would have been about right, but this is only our opinion. Other than that the hotel was lovely
Review 80:Location was lovely, staff were very friendly, Food was outstanding.
Review 81:The entire hotel is just so outdated. For the amount of money people are paying (I paid almost 400 dollars for 2 nights) - it's just not acceptable. I've stayed in many 3-4-5 start hotels and I know the difference. This is not a 4 star hotel, it's at most a 3 star - the bedrooms look like they're from the 80s, the decor, the bed sheets, even the shower door, those slight details are all super outdated & if they are getting this much money per night they need to really update and renew things. Also, there are no AC's in the room, and yes it can get cold in Nuwara Eliya but the problem is you can't even open the windows to let some cool draft in because there are no nets or screens and moths and Mosquitos come in all night, I had tons of them in my room & had to close the windows in the end and deal with literally zero ventilation. There was a bad smell coming from the bathroom & during cooking dinner times, on the first floor at least, the smell would seep into the hallways and rooms and it was unbearable. I didn't sleep well at all to be honest - the best thing about the room was maybe only the few good channels they had because there is literally nothing to do in the hotel at night as it barely has facilities & the drive up there is so far from town center so you can think of walking around anywhere but the small area they have outside - which also is super outdated. The chairs and tables are metal and uncomfortable, they could do with some nice garden benches with cosy couches for some lounging on that terrace overlooking the beautiful tea plantations. If you are charging that much for the rooms, you need to really give people what they are paying for - I rarely ever complain when I know I'm getting what I paid for (if it's a 2-3 Star for a lower price I wouldn't have expected as much) - but I had such high expectations for HTF and it didn't live up at all to my expectations.
Review 82:The Heritance Tea Factory is very special in the sense that it is like a piece of history - it's a genuine tea factory turned hotel & there is something very special about that - as you can still see all the mechanisms & remnants of that Tea Factory. The grounds are beautiful, surrounded by fields of tea plantations. Staff is lovely and always willing to help & be friendly.
Review 83:The peace and quiet after a beachside location. Loved the photographs and memorabilia around the hotel. The staff are helpful, welcoming and knowledgeable. We enjoyed our tea picking experience! The barman was particularly helpful on the night we were there- serving us a pot of special green tea!!
Review 84:My husband and I spent 2 days here and absolutely loved the location and solitude of the tea factory. The building inside was gorgeous and the staff were fantastic. Right from our welcome to farewell we couldn't fault them. Ask for a room in the front with a view. The tea picking experience was fantastic!
Review 85:The road to the hotel is really a pain! The rooms are English style, a bit dated. The bathrooms are small and moulded. The restaurant is average.
Review 86:The hotel is situated in an old Tea Factory. The views from the garden are nice.
Review 87:- Quality of the snack menu was not worth the standard one expects from a place like this.
Review 88:- Ideal location - The welcome - Courteous staff - Nature friendly
Review 89:No bad experiences. Wi-fi connection can be erratic but as week-long resident I found it fluctuated with time of day.
Review 90:Definitely worthwhile for its well-kept historic background as a working tea factory, its machinery still creaks away during evening demonstrations. Colonial costumes worn by staff rather quaint but in keeping with the Raj atmosphere the hotel seeks to create. Early morning walks through mist are memorable.
Review 91:The wifi is very inconsistant. Bath tub is too high and slippery, bath gel container unfriendly.
Review 92:I like their staff esp front desk Mark and guide/bell boy Mohan. Very patient and tried their best, always with a wide smile on their face.
Review 93:Perhaps up date the bathrooms.
Review 94:How privileged we felt to be able stay in a converted tea factory, right in the middle of a tea estate. The renovations are amazing.
Review 95:It was silly to be charged for tea at a tea estate. Why charge customers $1-2 for tea when people are paying $300/room.
Review 96:We loved this hotel-- the common areas are gorgeous, the room was comfortable and large, the views were amazing, the tea picking session was a big highlight, and the staff was excellent.
Review 97:- Too expensive! - Too much catered towards Southern Asian guests loosing the concept of the hotel
Review 98:- Pub & cigar lounge - Staff Great concept and hotel.
Review 99:Booked half board. On arrival found out this was for a buffet that was more than 20 pounds cheaper to pay on the day. Room was ok, the bathroom had a damp smell with mould round the bath.
Review 100:Location
Review 101:Even if I try to think can't really think of anything
Review 102:I celebrated my birthday there. Everything there was fantastic. Helpful understanding staff, they seemed to be welcoming you at their homes. Be it room service or house keeping or generally showing one around, recommending a walk around the property, they were the best. Awesome ambience...name it and it's there. Even a quick bday cake in 30 mins flat.
Review 103:The road to the hotel is like a snake! It's a bit difficult to get there but once you did, it deserves. And also the food quality was a bit disappointing for such a beautiful hotel.
Review 104:The location, the building, the staff, rooms and everything was amazing. A small tea plantation experience as well as tasting amazing teas was just magical!
Review 105:A lovely place with a warm welcome from everyone. The tea picking and tasting was fascinating and the spa treatment was so relaxing it sent me to sleep. Dinner on the train is hilarious and I had the best lamb I've ever eaten. I was a bit worried that this place might be a tourist rip off. It is a bit Disney does tea. But it's fantastic and really not to be missed.
Review 106:I loved my stay at the Heritance Tea Factory because the place is so original and so much part of Sri Lanka's modern history. My single room was tiny, and the bathroom even smaller, but one could note that every effort was made to make the guest comfortable. The views from the big bedroom windows were amazing, and the staff was competent, friendly, efficient -- the best! The driver that accompany me comment that the drivers' quarters and food was also excellent.
Review 107:My room was located in the first floor and the view was dominated by the big chimney.
Review 108:the hotel is really impressive, it is located in the old tea factory, which makes the design uniqe. The rooms are spacious and clean. The staff is helpful and very kind. The location is remote from the town, but to me it was an advantage. The area surrounding the hotel is pretty, lots of green tea bushes. There is also a chance to pluck tea leaves yourself, dressed in sari. The stay in the hotel was really anjoyable and an unforgettable experience!
Review 109:Our stay was in peak season, lots of rain and mist so we missed the mountain view and stay was expensive due to time of year. Spa & Gym was dated. Bar shuts at 11pm and evening entertainment is limited
Review 110:Nice historic building with very good service and excellent food. We really enjoyed the train meal experience. We had a hike through the tea fields which was pretty cool
Review 111:The atmosphere of the hotel was not comfortable or welcoming. Compared to other locations in Sri Lanka it is very expensive.
Review 112:Location up in the hills was stunning.
Review 113:Not all room have pleasant view and quiet (I have changed two rooms for the three-day stay;)), breakfast is rich but surprisingly tasteless, even freshly made omelette. But atmosphere in the hotel and around is great.
Review 114:Excellent view, wonderful idea to turn the tea factory into hotel, extraordinary pleasant and helpful staff incl front desk, good cuisine in the restaurant for dinner. There are some great relaxational places on the territory like cottage with lawns and gardens looking on the hills and clouds, mini tea factory. And tea plantations are all around!
Review 115:Cold shower, didn't have the fizz advertised on menu so had "Kramer" (disgusting) don't have it ! Also charged extra for them to deliver it to the room ? Mini bar !! V poor nothing in it . Set menu not great !
Review 116:View in the morning was great and good dining room . Staff very nice and attentive. Singer in dining room was great .
Review 117:1. The location is hard to access, far from everywhere 2. The staff unprofessional. poor bar quality 3. Restaurant and hotel are overpriced
Review 118:1. The views from hotel were great 2. Hotel is in the redesigned old tea factory 3. Has a small special restaurant in the old train wagon, which should be reserved ahead.
Review 119:The souvenir shop was not captivating
Review 120:The character of this hotel is not easily found in others ! An experience of a time gone by , reliving the good ol days ! Was lovely .
Review 121:Location was a bit remote and nowhere to walk from hotel. High tea was very disappointing - had to send back tea twice because it was cold and waited almost an hour for it. A lot of staff but service vey slow - willing but useless! In hindsight should have stayed in Nuwara Eliya town
Review 122:Interesting building
Review 123:transportation ( maybe offer free shuttle from city center)
Review 124:Warm and helpful staffs special welcome ceremony lovely tea experience Great view (sunrise and sunset) Good buffet Great facilities
Review 125:Loved the location, surrounded by tea plantations, beautiful view, misty mountains, very nice ambiance, staff extremely friendly and helpfull, tea plucking excursion. It was all very special.
Review 126:- Worst staff attitude ever met in life - You can't see your room unless you pay the full amount as they have experience issues with guests before "as told by their GM".
Review 127:Location and landscaping Indian food
Review 128:Wifi very slow in the rooms
Review 129:The food, the staff, the quality of the room and the exceptional environment. The hotel is just amazing in terms of decoration and situation.
Review 130:It's not a bad thing but I stayed there for 1 night and it was more than enough. Of course it depends on the kind of trip you want to do.
Review 131:The location it's amazing, great experience.
Review 132:Cost of hotel tours was a bit prohibitive. As part of the Heritance group of hotels it would be good if there was some consistency in product offerings. The packed breakfast for early morning walks on the Horton Plains could do with some improvement (or maybe we chose the wrong option)
Review 133:The accommodation was amazing and the staff exceedingly friendly and helpful. The meals were superb and served by very capable and attentive staff. The Manager stepped in and made arrangements for transport for our Horton Plains walk immediately when we informed him that our private driver was not able to take us.
Review 134:Very bad food. Breakfast terrible. You don't have alternatives. The hotel is far away from anywhere. Too much expensive for the context. Food is really bad.
Review 135:Experience to stay in a tea factory.
