Reviews for Yuzawa New Otani
Review 1:The staff are of disappointed standard among other hotel staff in japan. A young staff was totally reluctant to contact a ski school for me regarding the confirmation of my son's training. i cant think of a genuine reason..... he is not busy and there is no conflict of interest....... though i really needed his assistance as the ski school cant speak English and did not reply my email. Another staff, for unknown reason, always showed me an unfriendly face, which i observed did not happen when he talked to Japanese...... i hope its not discrimination related......
Review 2:Excellent breakfast. Good onsen. Fair location. Room quite spacious yet a bit old.
Review 3:Staff were awesome. They helped to fix the sole of my shoe when it came off. They also accommodated our cancellation of additional nights due to lack of snow in the region.
Review 4:The room is a bit run down and was very smoky. The hotel chit that was handed to us when we checked in had 2 check boxes, "Non-Smoking" or "Deodorised". The "Deodorised" box was checked. By that I take it to mean Smoking room that had been "deodorised". Funny but not funny. The whole room smelt like an ashtray, unfortunate because I requested for non-smoking. The futon comforter/blankets were very smelly, terribly smoky and had people's oily odour on them so I suspect even the outer covering was not changed after the previous guests left. As it was bedtime, we did not use them and the next day we asked them to change all of them. The toilet looked quite new, but there was an occasion that it overflowed upon flushing! We had to call maintenance, and I was glad it was time to leave.
Review 5:The Onsen was the best thing in this ryokan. The ensuite toilet & shower looked like they were recently refurbished which was good.
Review 6:No WiFi signal at room area, can only access WiFi at lobby area.
Review 7:Nice room, excellent Onsen. Free pick-up drive to train station. Discount lift ticket.
Review 8:No wifi at room. Should know the suituation with ski area so that if they are close because of bad weather, they should notify hotel guest.
Review 9:The helpful staff and free hot spring available. The room is large and clean. Much better than expectation because I have seen some unfavourable comment that are not true.
Review 10:Our room never smelled of smoke but when you stepped into the hallway you were engulfed by it. If might have been nice if there was a non-smoking wing or even a whole floor.
Review 11:Immaculately kept older hotel. Good sized room with a beautiful autumn view. We were lucky to book one of the handful of non-smoking rooms.
Review 12:Although a short (10 minute) walk from the sinkansen station, it was slightly harder to find the hotel than anticipated - perhaps an accurate local map would help. No food was available in the hotel (despite the many pictures of food on their booking.com entry), though see previous note regarding local restaurants. Shuttles to the open ski resort finish running about midday (there was no direct access to the only open ski area - Gala Yuzawa). We weren't aware of availabilty and and weren't offered cycle hire. Although we were given free shuttle ride to sister hotel, where a swimming pool was available to use, it's cost us around £30 for a family of four (2+2) - also the number of associated rules for swimming and acess to the pool were a bit off-putting. Little English was spoken, although this can hardly be a criticism, and everyone in hotel, town and ski resort (as throughout Japan) was very helpful. We hope to return - we'll learn more than two or three basic words next time.
Review 13:The Onsens were beautiful presented within ornamental areas, including outside bath(s) and sauna - male/female facilities varied, though the areas were swapped over during our stay. The hair and body wash/care products provided free were ample and of very good quality. The Japanese-style room including kimonos, etc. was very comfortable and some of the best we saw in our trip. The room was converted for japanese tea drinking (everything provided of course) every day and all traditonal bedding put back every evening. There were restaurants nearby (within two or three minutes walk) of various types (see below). The one we used on both nights was very reasonable in price and more than adequate in quality (plus it's menu had pictures of the food and some english translation).
Review 14:No wifi in the room. This is 2016 now.
Review 15:The rooms were a nice size. The toilet and shower were good. Regular shuttles to the station and ski areas.

Review 27:Staff were really helpful.
Review 28:Friendly staff, value for money and great location
Review 29:The hotel charges are way too high.
Review 30:Like the hot & cold water provided in big capacity.
Review 31:Western style room not as good as Japanese rooms
Review 32:Friendly staff, large rooms; prefer Japanese style rooms; great location in Yuzawa
Review 33:Need better directions on how to get from train station.
Review 34:Every thing
Review 35:Prices on Saturday nights are quite a lot higher than other nights - try to visit during the week or on Friday or Sunday nights.
Review 36:Onsen was lovely, especially the outdoor pool. Staff were very helpful and friendly, despite our lack of Japanese being matched by somewhat limited English. Breakfast was superb. Bought a lift ticket for Gala at the hotel which saved about 25%. This ryokan is a nice multistorey approach to traditional accommodation. The dinner meal looked fantastic but wasn't available through booking.com or on checking in (probably because it was very elaborate and required precision ordering and preparation).
Review 37:None.
Review 38:The hotel is located a short walk away from the Echigo Yuzawa Train/Shinkansen station. The staffs are very friendly, polite and helpful. One lady could speak English and she was very helpful. I arrived at 10am and the room was not ready (check in time is at 3pm). She brought me to the changing room to change into my ski attire and kept my luggages for me. It is cheaper to buy the ski pass from the hotel. There is also a ski equipment rental place on the first floor of the hotel. The rental is cheaper compared to the ski station and the equipment are in good condition. There is also frequent free shuttle service from the hotel to Gala Yuzawa Ski Station and return (schedule is provided by the hotel). I took a Japanese room and it was superp. The hotel staff came to set up the futon (bed) in the evening while I was in the hot spring. The hotel has 2 hot springs, one outdoor and one jacuzzi type. They are really nice. I enjoyed my stay here and would definitely recommend it to my friends.
Review 39:Skiing wasn't the best
Review 40:Great location 10 mins walk from the station. Clean and friendly place
